Abstract:Studies on the destruction of solid per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) chemicals and PFAS-laden solid wastes significantly lag behind the urgent social demand. There is a great need to develop novel treatment processes that can destroy nonaqueous PFAS at ambient temperatures and pressures. In this study, we develop a piezoelectric-material-assisted ball milling (PZM-BM) process built on the principle that ball collisions during milling can activate PZMs to generate ∼kV potentials for PFAS destruction in the absence of solvents. Using boron nitride (BN), a typical PZM, as an example, we successfully demonstrate the complete destruction and near-quantitative (∼100%) defluorination of solid PFOS and perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) after a 2 h treatment. This process was also used to treat PFAS-contaminated sediment. Approximately 80% of 21 targeted PFAS were destroyed after 6 h of treatment. The reaction mechanisms were determined to be a combination of piezo-electrochemical oxidation of PFAS and fluorination of BN. The PZM-BM process demonstrates many potential advantages, as the degradation of diverse PFAS is independent of functional group and chain configurations and does not require caustic chemicals, heating, or pressurization. This pioneering study lays the groundwork for optimizing PZM-BM to treat various PFAS-laden solid wastes.

Abstract:The non-thermal destruction of aqueous film-forming foam (AFFF) stockpiles, one of the major culprits responsible for water and soil contamination by per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), is extremely challenging because of the coexistence of mixed recalcitrant PFAS and complicated organic matrices at extremely high concentrations. To date, the complete defluorination of undiluted AFFF at ambient conditions has not been demonstrated. This study reports a novel piezoelectric ball milling (BM) approach for treating AFFF with a total organic fluorine concentration of 9,080 mg/L and total organic carbon of 234 g/L. Near-complete defluorination (> 95% conversion of organofluorine to fluoride) of undiluted AFFF was achieved by co-milling with boron nitride (BN). By carefully examining the experimental data, we identified AFFF liquid film thickness (Z) at the collision interface as a descriptor of treatment performance. We further validated that effective defluorination proceeded when Z was less than a criteria value of 2.3 μm. In light of this new understanding, the addition of SiO2 as a dispersant and the pre-evaporation solvents to reduce Z have been validated as effective strategies to promote AFFF treatment capacity.

Abstract:Anion exchange resins (AERs) have been widely used for the removal of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) from water. However, regardless of whether AERs are regenerable or single-use, the disposal of end-of-life AERs presents significant challenges. Conventional waste management strategies, such as landfill disposal and incineration, are increasingly under scrutiny and may face impending bans due to environmental concerns. This study introduces a non-thermal, solvent-free process for the effective destruction of PFAS on AERs by co-milling piezoelectric boron nitride (BN) powders with contaminated AERs and stainless steel (SS) balls. The approach demonstrated the destruction of PFOS and achieved 80% defluorination when applied to two types of AERs (PFA694E and AmberLite IRA 67) pre-loaded with PFOS. Comprehensive targeted PFAS analysis and suspect screening analysis of transformation products elucidated the reaction mechanisms and confirmed that the functional groups of AERs did not participate in the reaction. The process’s effectiveness was further validated in treating field-collected single-use AERs (PFA694 and AmberLite PSR2 Plus) contaminated with PFAS mixtures of varying chain lengths and head groups. After treatment, PFAS levels on the AERs were reduced to below ng/g detection limits, and no PFAS release was observed in standard leaching tests.

Abstract:Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) pose significant environmental and health risks due to their ubiquitous presence and persistence in water systems. In this study, we investigate the efficacy of piezocatalysis using barium titanate (BTO) nanoparticles under ultrasound irradiation for the degradation and defluorination of perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS) in water. The research demonstrates a substantial 90.5% degradation and 29% defluorination of PFOS after six hours of treatment, highlighting the potential of piezocatalysis as a promising approach for PFAS degradation. Additionally, the quantification of degradation products elucidates the transformation pathways of PFOS, suggesting a stepwise chain-shortening mechanism. Our findings underscore the importance of continued research in optimizing piezocatalytic processes and exploring synergistic approaches with other advanced oxidation methods to effectively address PFAS contamination challenges. These efforts are essential for advancing sustainable water treatment strategies and mitigating the environmental and health hazards associated with PFAS contamination.
