Abstract:A fundamental understanding of the structural effects of supported metal catalysts at the molecular level is extremely important for developing high-performance catalysts that are widely used in industry, which is still a longstanding attractive but challenging topic in multidisciplinary fields. In this work, we report the strong effects of local coordination structures on the catalytic activity of subnanometric PtOx clusters over CeO2 nanowires in low-temperature CO oxidation as a probe reaction. Atoms and subnanometric clusters of Pt were deposited to form the coordination structure of PtOx on the well-defined CeO2 nanowires with mainly exposed (110) facets. The reactivity of active sites and the variation of the local coordination structures of the PtOx sites were deeply investigated with in situ spectroscopic experiments, assisted by density functional theory simulations. According to our observation, although the highly dispersed Pt sites at the subnanometric scale could provide increased accessible sites, some of the Pt sites did not show high activity for CO oxidation due to the increased surrounding oxygen that seemed to overstabilize the Pt atoms. An increased proportion of both adsorbed CO intermediates on oxidized Pt sites and the interfacial lattice oxygen of PtOx clusters tended to become inactive on samples with a high coordination number of oxygen bonded to Pt sites (CN(Pt-O)), leading to the loss of effective active sites and a decrease in the catalytic activity. A relatively small CN(Pt-O) value in the subnanometric PtOx/CeO2 NWs, which was found to be the appropriate structure for their catalytic performance, remarkably increased the activity by about 1/2 order of magnitude. We believe our investigation on the interfacial coordination structure effects of subnanometric PtOx clusters dispersed on CeO2 nanowires can provide some new basic chemical insights into the metal-support interfacial interactions of Pt/CeO2 catalysts for understanding their catalytic performance in some relevant reactions.

Abstract:Understanding the origin of enhanced catalytic activity is critical to heterogeneous catalyst design. This is especially important for non-noble metal-based catalysts, notably metal oxides, which have recently emerged as viable candidates for numerous thermal catalytic processes. For thermal catalytic reduction/hydrogenation using metal oxide nanoparticles, enhanced catalytic performance is typically attributed to an increased surface area and the presence of oxygen vacancies. Concomitantly, the treatments that induce oxygen vacancies also impact other material properties, such as the microstrain, crystallinity, oxidation state, and particle shape. Herein, multivariate statistical analysis is used to disentangle the impact of material properties of CuO nanoparticles on catalytic rates for nitroaromatic and methylene blue reduction. The impact of the microstrain, shape, and Cu(0) atomic percent is demonstrated for these reactions; furthermore, a protocol for correlating material property parameters to catalytic efficiency is presented, and the importance of catalyst design for these broadly utilized probe reactions is highlighted.

Abstract:Fundamental investigations of catalyst nanoparticles Heterogeneous catalysis, the conversion of chemicals by the use of a suitable solid state catalyst, is a very important technology in modern society and it is involved in the production of up to 90% of all chemicals. Catalysis has in this way played a significant role in the technological and economic development in the 20th century. There is however a downside to this development and we are seeing significant pollution and pressure on resources. Catalysis therefore has an increasingly important role in limiting pollution and optimizing the use of resources. This development will depend on our fundamental understanding of catalytic processes and our ability to make use of that understanding. This thesis presents fundamental studies of catalyst nanoparticles with particular focus on dynamic processes. Such studies often require atomic-scale characterization, because the catalytic conversion takes place on the molecular and atomic level. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) has the ability to image nanostructures with atomic resolution and reveal the atomic configuration of the important nanoparticle surfaces. In the present work, TEM has been used to study nanoparticles in situ at elevated temperature and with gas present in the microscope in order to recreate the conditions found in a chemical reactor. This is very important because we know that particles may change shape as their surfaces respond to a changing gas atmosphere. To obtain quantitative and credible information in situ, it is very important that we only study intrinsic structures and phenomena and not those that may be induced by the high energy electrons used to image the specimen. This requires careful consideration of the influence of the electron beam in order to understand, control and minimize that influence. I present four different topics, each related to different aspects of nanoparticle dynamics and catalysis. The first topic is the reduction of a homogeneous solid state precursor to form the catalytically active phase which is metal nanoparticles on an inert support. Here, we have reduced Cu phyllosilicate to Cu on silica and imaged the process in situ. The data obtained established the foundation for modeling work which revealed that the reduction proceeded by an autocatalytic route. Here, the initial nucleation of Cu is slow and the subsequent growth in size is fast because the Cu particles themselves catalyze further reduction. The second topic treated the active state of a methanol synthesis catalyst. This work was performed by a parallel approach, where we investigated identically created nanoparticles both with TEM and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The methanol synthesis catalyst is a complex high surface area Cu=ZnO=Al2O3 structure that is difficult to study by TEM. We therefore created size-selected CuZn alloy nanoparticles that were transformed by oxidation and reduction into Cu nanoparticles decorated with ZnO. This represents a simplified model system for the high surface area catalyst. The interplay between Cu and ZnO and the exact role of ZnO as a promoter for catalytic activity is not yet fully understood. Our work revealed that the surface of the reduced catalyst consists mainly of Cu decorated with well defined ZnO crystals. It was demonstrated by XPS that a fraction of the ZnO is reduced simultaneously with the Cu under H2 atmosphere, presumably forming a surface alloy in the Cu. The third topic studied the sintering of Cu nanoparticles supported on silica. Sintering is the main deactivation mechanism for the methanol synthesis catalyst and so this topic is of great interest to the development of better catalysts. It was found that sintering proceeded via Ostwald ripening, i. e. the migration of atomic species between particles, with a net flow from small to larger particles resulting in an overall growth in particle size. The presence of CO increased the rate of sintering significantly and the presence of H2O slowed it down. The fourth topic investigated the oxidation of CO on a Pt catalyst in the special case where the reaction displays temporal rate oscillations under fixed conditions. This is a well-known phenomenon, but the mechanism driving the oscillations on nanoparticles has hitherto been unknown. We used nanoreactor technology which allows for simultaneous TEM imaging and activity measurement, also referred to as an Operando experiment. With this we revealed that the shape of the Pt nanoparticles changed in phase with changes in global reaction rate. By the use of reactor modeling it was possible to show that the oscillations were possible due to the coupling between the self-poisoning nature of the CO oxidation reaction on Pt and gas flow and diffusion in the reactor. Our work showed that shape changes can drive global rate oscillations.

In situ investigation of oxidation across a heterogeneous nanoparticle-support interface during metal support interactions

Abstract:Interactions between oxide supports and noble metal nanoparticles (NPs) is an area of intense research interest across all fields of catalysis. Oxygen spillover, metal support interactions (MSIs) and charge transfer are among many mechanisms observed and proposed as to how NP-support interfaces assist and enhance catalysis. This work studies the migration of oxygen across the Pd NP-CuO nanowire (NW) interface and beyond. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and Kelvin probe force microscopy (KPFM) found an interaction between the Pd NP and CuO NW support, via the formation of PdO at the Pd-CuO interface. It was found, through in situ irradiation at high vacuum transmission electron microscopy (TEM), that oxygen enters the Pd NP lattice from the Pd-CuO interface via amorphization of the NP. Varying the amount of irradiation highlighted the different rates of amorphization of NPs, with full amorphization of a NP leading to the formation of an epitaxially driven PdO across the NPs. Interestingly, in situ heating in XPS observed a reduction to metallic Pd, found to be similarly amorphous during TEM investigation. On comparison with Pd supported on a non-reducible substrate - in which oxidation was found to proceed from the outer surface in, rather than the support interface (resulting in a PdO shell) - it is theorized that the oxidation and reduction of Pd on CuO forms a PdO NP surface full of Pd-PdO sites allowing for synergistic effects, of great use in the oxidation and hydrogenation of organic species.

Abstract:Understanding the dynamic structural transformation of subnanometric metal species is a key to the establishment of the structure-function relationship for heterogeneous catalysts composed of single atoms and subnanometric clusters. Unlike noble metal catalysts, the evolution of non-noble metal catalysts containing singly dispersed atoms and clusters during redox treatments and under reaction conditions has not been well understood yet. In this work, with spectroscopic techniques and aberration-corrected electron microscopy, the control of dynamic structural transformations of supported CuOx species (from single ions to nanoclusters and nanoparticles) by the combination of the redox and water treatment has been systematically studied. Furthermore, their catalytic properties for been demonstrated to be strongly related to the dispersion of two deNO(x) reactions (NO + CO, NH3 + NO + O-2) have also Cu2+ species, providing insights into the active sites in these model reactions for deNO(x) applications.

Abstract:Understanding the oxidation and reduction mechanisms of catalytically active transition metal nanoparticles is important to improve their application in a variety of chemical processes. In nanocatalysis the nanoparticles can undergo oxidation or reduction in situ, and thus the redox species are not what are observed before and after reactions. We have used the novel environmental scanning transmission electron microscope (ESTEM) with 0.1 nm resolution in systematic studies of complex dynamic oxidation and reduction mechanisms of copper nanoparticles. The oxidation of copper has previously been reported to be dependent on its crystallography and its interaction with the substrate. By following the dynamic oxidation process in situ, in real time, with high-angle annular dark-field imaging in the ESTEM, we use conditions ideal to track the oxidation front as it progresses across a copper nanoparticle by following the changes in the atomic number (z) contrast with time. The oxidation occurs via the nucleation of the oxide phase (Cu2O) from one area of the nanoparticle which then progresses unidirectionally across the particle, with the Cu-to-Cu2O interface having a relationship of Cu{111} parallel to Cu2O{111}. The oxidation kinetics are related to the temperature and oxygen pressure. When the process is reversed in hydrogen, the reduction process is observed to be similar to the oxidation, with the same crystallographic relationship between the two phases. The dynamic observations provide unique insights into redox mechanisms which are important to understanding and controlling the oxidation and reduction of copper-based nanoparticles.
Revealing the Origin of Low-Temperature Activity of Ni-Rh Nanostructures during CO Oxidation Reaction with Operando TEM

Abstract:In bimetallic heterostructured nanoparticles (NPs), the synergistic effect between their different metallic components leads to higher catalytic activity compared to the activity of the individual components. However, how the dynamic changes through which these NPs adopt catalytically active structures during a reaction and how the restructuring affects their activity are largely unknown. Here, using operando transmission electron microscopy, structural changes are studied in bimetallic Ni-Rh NPs, comprising of a Ni core whose surface is decorated with smaller Rh NPs, during a CO oxidation reaction. The direct atomic-scale imaging reveals that, under O2 -rich conditions, Ni core partially transforms into NiO, forming a (Ni+NiO)-Rh hollow nanocatalyst with high catalytic activity. Under O2 -poor conditions, Rh NPs alloy with the surface of the core to form a NiRh-alloy surface, and the NPs display significantly lower activity. The theoretical calculations indicate that NiO component that forms only under O2 -rich conditions enhances the activity by preventing the CO poisoning of the nanocatalysts. The results demonstrate that visualizing the structural changes during reactions is indispensable in identifying the origin of catalytic activity. These insights into the dynamic restructuring of NP catalysts under a reactive environment are critical for the rational design of high-performance nanocatalysts.

Abstract:Reconstructing a catalyst with tunable properties is essential for achieving selective electrochemical CO2 reduction reaction (CO2RR). Here, a reduction–oxidation–reduction (ROR) electrochemical treatment is devised to advisedly reconstruct copper nanoparticles on vertical graphene. Undercoordinated sites and oxygen vacancies constructed on the Cu active sites during the ROR treatment enhance the CO2RR activity. Moreover, by varying the oxidation potential while maintaining the reduction potential during the ROR treatment, CO2RR selectivity can be tuned between *COOH- and *OCHO-derived products. Specifically, rich grain boundaries are formed on the ROR catalyst with a high oxidation potential (+1.2 VRHE), favoring the *COOH/*OCCO adsorption and leading C–C coupling to *COOH-derived products, while the catalyst undergoing ROR at a low oxidation potential (+0.8 VRHE) lacks grain boundaries, resulting in highly selective formate (*OCHO-derived) production. Abstract:Supported alloy nanoparticles are prevailing alternative low-cost catalysts for both heterogeneous and electrochemical catalytic processes. Gas molecules selectively interacting with one metal element induces a dynamic structural change of alloy nanoparticles under reaction conditions and largely controls their catalytic properties. However, such a multicomponent dynamic-interaction-controlled evolution, both structural and chemical, remains far from clear. Herein, by using state-of-the-art environmental TEM, we directly visualize, in situ at the atomic scale, the evolution of a AuCu alloy nanoparticle supported on CeO2 during CO oxidation. We find that gas molecules can "free" metal atoms on the (010) surface and form highly mobile atom clusters. Remarkably, we discover that CO exposure induces Au segregation and activation on the nanoparticle surface, while O2 exposure leads to the segregation and oxidation of Cu on the particle surface. The as-formed Cu2O/AuCu interface may facilitate CO-O interaction corroborated by DFT calculations. These findings provide insights into the atomistic mechanisms on alloy nanoparticles during catalytic CO oxidation reaction and to a broad scope of rational design of alloy nanoparticle catalysts.

Abstract:CuO/SiO2 catalysts with a vast difference in copper dispersion were prepared by impregnation (denoted as CuSi-IM) and ammonia-evaporation (denoted as CuSi-AE) methods and tested for NO reduction by CO. Despite the inferior dispersion of copper species in the CuSi-IM catalysts, they exhibited significantly higher NO conversion efficiency, with more than one order of activity enhancement achieved in comparison with the CuSi-AE samples. Ex situ XRD, in situ DRIFTS, and CO-TPR characterization were carried out to study the nature of active copper species and their evolution under reaction conditions. A clear dispersiondependent reduction behavior (for CuSi-AE, step-wise reduction; for CuSi-IM, one step reduction) under a CO atmosphere was observed, and the generation of Cu-0 preferentially occurred at lower temperatures for the CuSi-IM samples, which accounted for the better performance in the NO + CO reaction. Lastly, NO-TPD and TPSR experiments were performed and the essential role of Cu-0 in promoting NO dissociation was proposed. The results of the present study would deepen our understanding on the reaction behaviors of copper catalysts in the NO + CO reaction.
Correlating Oxidation State and Surface Area to Activity from Operando Studies of Copper CO Electroreduction Catalysts in a Gas-Fed Device

Abstract:The rational design of high-performance electrocatalysts requires a detailed understanding of dynamic changes in catalyst properties, including oxidation states, surface area, and morphology under realistic working conditions. Oxide-derived Cu catalysts exhibit a remarkable selectivity toward multicarbon products for the electrochemical CO reduction reaction (CORR), but the exact role of the oxide remains elusive for explaining the performance enhancements. Here, we used operando X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) coupled with simultaneous measurements of the catalyst activity and selectivity by gas chromatography (GC) to study the relationship between oxidation states of Cu-based catalysts and the activity for ethylene (C2H4) production in a CO gas-fed cell. By utilizing a custom-built XAS cell, oxidation states of Cu catalysts can be probed in device-relevant settings and under high current densities (>80 mA cm–2) for the CORR. By employing an electrochemical oxidation process, we found that the Cu oxidation states and specific ion species do not correlate with C2H4 production. The difference in the CORR activity is also investigated in relation to electrochemical surface area (ECSA) changes. While the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) activity is positively correlated to the ECSA changes, the increased C2H4 activity is not proportional to the ECSA. Ex situ characterization from microscopic techniques suggests that the changes in the C2H4 activity and selectivity may arise from a morphological transformation that evolves into a more active structure. These comprehensive results give rise to the development of a cell regeneration method that can restore the performance of the Cu catalyst without cell disassembly. Abstract:Ternary alloy catalysts outperform their binary counterparts in many reactions although the direct observation of structural evolution under reaction conditions to understand the structure-performance relationship significantly lacks. In situ transmission electron microscopy at atmospheric pressure provides a great opportunity to uncover dynamic structure and composition changes of ternary alloy nanoparticles. In this work, the atomic-scale elemental diffusion and surface reconstruction of ternary octahedral Pt2CuNi alloy nanoparticles in an oxidative environment at elevated temperatures are reported. Combining them with multiple characterizations and numerical simulation, it is revealed that the oxidative condition induced the lattice atom diffusion, which leads to the NiOx major/CuOx minor surface oxide layers accompanied by surface restructuring and lattice rearrangement. Further analysis helped to establish the numerical model and visualize the atom distribution variation in the restructuring process. Also, the model catalytic test of the oxygen reduction reaction demonstrates that the catalytic performance of ternary Pt2CuNi alloy nanoparticles can be tuned through oxidative treatment.

Abstract:The identification of the contribution of different surface sites to the catalytic activity of a catalyst nanoparticle is one of the most challenging issues in the fundamental studies of heterogeneous catalysis. We herein demonstrate an effective strategy of using a series of uniform cubic Cu2O nanocrystals with different sizes to identify the intrinsic activity and contributions of face and edge sites in the catalysis of CO oxidation by a combination of reaction kinetics analysis and DFT calculations. Cu2O nanocrystals undergo insitu surface oxidation forming CuO thin films during CO oxidation. As the average size of the cubic Cu2O nanocrystals decreases from 1029nm to 34nm, the dominant active sites contributing to the catalytic activity switch from face sites to edge sites. These results reveal the interplay between the intrinsic catalytic activity and the density of individual types of surface sites on a catalyst nanoparticle in determining their contributions to the catalytic activity.

Abstract:Heterogeneous catalysts consisting of supported metallic nanoparticles typically derive exceptional catalytic activity from their large proportion of undercoordinated surface sites which promote adsorption of reactant molecules. Simultaneously, these high energy surface configurations are unstable, leading to nanoparticle growth or degradation and eventually a loss of catalytic activity. Surface morphology of catalytic nanoparticles is paramount to catalytic activity, selectivity, and degradation rates, however it is well-known that harsh reaction conditions can cause the surface structure to change. Still, limited research has focused on understanding the link between nanoparticle surface facets and degradation rates or mechanisms. Here, we study a model Au supported catalyst system over a range of temperatures using a combination of in situ transmission electron microscopy, kinetic Monte Carlo simulations, and density functional theory calculations to establish an atomistic picture of how variations in surface structures and atomic coordination environments lead to shifting evolution mechanisms as a function of temperature. By combining experimental results, which yield direct observation of dynamic shape changes and particle sublimation rates, with computational techniques, which enable understanding the fundamental thermodynamics and kinetics of nanoparticle evolution, we illustrate a two-step evolution mechanism in which mobile adatoms form through desorption from low-coordination facets and subsequently sublimate off the particle surface. By understanding the role of temperature in the competition between surface diffusion and sublimation, we are able to show how individual atomic movements lead to particle scale morphological changes and rationalize why sublimation rates vary between particles in a system of nearly identical nanoparticles.

Abstract:CuO/SiO2 catalysts with a vast difference in copper dispersion were prepared by impregnation (denoted as CuSi-IM) and ammonia-evaporation (denoted as CuSi-AE) methods and tested for NO reduction by CO. Despite the inferior dispersion of copper species in the CuSi-IM catalysts, they exhibited significantly higher NO conversion efficiency, with more than one order of activity enhancement achieved in comparison with the CuSi-AE samples. Ex situ XRD, in situ DRIFTS, and CO-TPR characterization were carried out to study the nature of active copper species and their evolution under reaction conditions. A clear dispersiondependent reduction behavior (for CuSi-AE, step-wise reduction; for CuSi-IM, one step reduction) under a CO atmosphere was observed, and the generation of Cu-0 preferentially occurred at lower temperatures for the CuSi-IM samples, which accounted for the better performance in the NO + CO reaction. Lastly, NO-TPD and TPSR experiments were performed and the essential role of Cu-0 in promoting NO dissociation was proposed. The results of the present study would deepen our understanding on the reaction behaviors of copper catalysts in the NO + CO reaction.

Abstract:For heterogeneous catalysis, the metal catalysts supported on reducible metal oxides, especially CeO2 and TiO2, have long been a research focus because of their excellent catalytic performance in a variety of catalytic reactions. Detailed understanding of the promotion effect of reducible metal oxides on catalytic reactions is beneficial to the rational design of new catalysts. The important catalytic roles of reducible metal oxides are attributed to their intimate interactions with the supported metals (e.g., strong metal-support interaction, electronic metal-support interaction) and unique support structures (e.g., oxygen vacancy, reversible valence change, surface hydroxyl). However, the structures of the catalysts and reaction mechanisms are strongly affected by environmental conditions. For this reason, in situ/operando spectroscopy studies under working conditions are necessary to obtain accurate information about the structure-activity relationship. In this review, the recent applications of the in situ/operando spectroscopy methodology on metal catalysts with reducible metal oxides as supports are summarized.

Abstract:Supported metal catalysts play a pivotal role in the production of fuels and chemicals and environmental remediation. However, identification and tailoring of the active metal sites on these catalysts still remain a formidable challenge, primarily due to their dynamic nature in catalytic reactions. Here, we report a simple and effective strategy for tuning supported Cu nanoparticles via controllable in situ surface restructuring to form coordinatively more unsaturated Cu sites, which exhibit a 4-fold increase in catalytic turnover rate and high stability, as probed by the ethanol dehydrogenation reaction. In situ measurements by transmission electron microscopy and X-ray absorption spectroscopy reveal intense phase transformation and consequent dynamic restructuring of Cu nanoparticles, induced by oxidation with temporarily added nitrous oxide and subsequent reduction under reaction conditions. Such restructuring is precisely controlled at the Cu surfaces without altering Cu dispersion, oxidation state, etc., enabling us to unambiguously identify the active sites during catalysis. This strategy, an alternative to many sophisticated synthesis methods, has been shown to be effective for engineering different Cu catalysts and in turn markedly enhancing their catalytic activity for a wide range of reactions varying from alcohol dehydrogenation to methanol steam reforming.

Abstract:Interfacial local environment of noble metal nanoparticles (NPs) and support is crucial for the development and design of thermally and chemically stable noble metal heterogeneous catalysts. The unique chemical environment can strengthen the NPs interaction with the support surface, which can effectively avoid the agglomeration of NPs. The strategy is developed to modulate the interfacial chemical environment of supported Pt NPs with the help of the unsaturated Al3+ in Al2O3N (nanobelt) support, resulting in a sintering-resistant Pt/Al2O3N catalyst. Al solid-state MAS NMR characterization shows that Al2O3N support contains a large amount of unsaturated Alpenta3+ (about 22.6%). XAS confirms that Pt NPs deposited on the surface of Al2O3 with rich unsaturated pentahedral coordinated Al3+ sites have a unique coordination structure at the interface (more Pt-O coordination). When catalyzing the CO oxidation as a probe reaction, the catalytic activity and the particle sizes of Pt NPs do not change significantly even after the reaction at 400 °C for 15 days, and the complete CO conversion temperature increases only by 40 °C when the catalyst is screened at 600 °C for 5 days. This work demonstrates a new strategy to develop stable large-scale anti-sintering noble metal-based heterogeneous catalysts for many important high-temperature industrial applications.
