Abstract:An all-solid-state sensor based on screen-printing technique for rapid blood calcium test was studied. The sensor consists of a thick film calcium ion-selective electrode and a pseudo-reference electrode. Poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) (PEDOT) doped with poly(styrenesulfonate) (PSS) was screen-printed on carbon paste electrodes as internal solid contacts for both the ion-selective and reference electrodes. PVC membranes with and without neutral carrier ETH129 were coated on the PEDOT (PSS) layer to form calcium ion-selective and pseudo-reference electrodes, respectively. The properties of screen-printed PEDOT (PSS) film on carbon paste electrode were studied by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) and cyclic voltammetry (CV) methods. The response time of the calcium sensors was 15s while less than 15μL sample was applied. And the sensitivity was 30.0±1.0mV per decade, while the potentiometric log selectivity coefficients were −3.80, −3.35 and −4.60 for Na+, K+ and Mg2+. Other properties of the calcium sensors were evaluated, including the temperature effect, repeatability, reproducibility and stability. The testing results with the calcium sensors were compared with those with a routine hospital electrolyte analyzer. The clinical trial results reveal that the all-solid-state calcium sensor is promising for the point of care testing.
A Portable Microfluidic Electrochemical Sensor with Nonlinear Fit Strategy for Wide-Range Uric Acid Detection

Abstract:In this work, we have developed a portable electrochemical sensing device controlled by a smartphone through Bluetooth, which was applied for regular uric acid (UA) monitoring in prevention and healthcare management. On the core lies a nonlinear fitting model (I = k center dot(N - exp(- K center dot cbulk + b))) which is proposed for the first time and given from the differential equation based on the theoretical analysis. We believe this model can reflect the intrinsic relationship between the obtained current and the bulk analyte concentration, therefore leading to an expanding UA detection range (10-fold) compared to the widely used linear standard curve model and reducing the requirements for the modification of the electrode materials. Besides, the integration of the microfluidic chip promoted the removal of UA oxidation products at the electrode surface, yielding excellent sensing stability with a relative standard deviation (RSD) lower than 1 % during 10 consecutive runs. Consequently, we acquired the relationship between Square Wave Voltammetry (SWV) current and UA concentration (I = 15.27*(2.05 - exp (- 0.00108*(cbulk - 663.5))), R2 = 0.9999) in the range of 5 to 1000 mu M with a limit of detection (LoD) of 2.4 mu M using a completely unmodified screen-printed carbon electrode (SPCE). Proof of concept experiments using 25x diluted human urine spiked with UA yielded a recovery rate of 87.5-101.4 % and a satisfactory selectivity result, which is within the value expected for clinical use, indicating the potential of the developed instrument and nonlinear fitting model for urinary UA detection.

Abstract:Objective: Rising concerns over wellness and aging have heightened the demand for convenient and efficient on-site health monitoring and disease screening. Current research, focused on specific biomarker detection, often neglects the complexities of sample matrix interference and the absence of a comprehensive, automated platform. To address these issues, we have developed a universal, fully automated analyzer for multifaceted, on-site biochemical analysis of body fluids. Methods: This analyzer integrates automated sample pretreatment, automatic dilution, detection, and self-cleaning functionalities seamlessly. It is designed to detect a wide range of analytes, from small molecules to macromolecules, including ions and proteins, utilizing spectrophotometric sensing. After optimization, the analyzer achieves performance comparable to traditional Enzyme-Linked Immunosorbent Assay (ELISA), while significantly expanding its detection range through automated dilution. Results: Demonstrations of small molecule detection include the simultaneous assessment of citric acid (CA) and oxalic acid (OA) in urine, achieving recovery rates between 96.65%-106.42% and 93.13%-112.50%, respectively. For protein detection, the analyzer successfully identified Cyfra21-1 in saliva with a recovery rate of 104.93%-111.31%. The pre-treatment process requires only 8.8 minutes, showing enhanced recovery rates for CA and OA at 97.8% and 97.6% respectively, which are superior and more rapid than manual methods. Conclusion: The exemplary pretreatment and detection performance of the analyzer underlines its effectiveness in multifaceted, on-site biomarker detection, establishing it as a promising and versatile tool for disease screening and health monitoring. Significance: This analyzer offers a powerful technological solution for on-site fluid testing, advancing community health care by facilitating more reliable and rapid diagnostics.

Abstract:Cellular mechanical property analysis reflecting the physiological and pathological states of cells plays a crucial role in assessing the quality of stored blood. However, its complex equipment needs, operation difficulty, and clogging issues hinder automated and rapid biomechanical testing. Here, we propose a promising biosensor assisted by magnetically actuated hydrogel stamping to fulfill it. The flexible magnetic actuator triggers the collective deformation of multiple cells in the light-cured hydrogel, and it allows for on-demand bioforce stimulation with the advantages of portability, cost-effectiveness, and simplicity of operation. The magnetically manipulated cell deformation processes are captured by the integrated miniaturized optical imaging system, and the cellular mechanical property parameters are extracted from the captured images for real-time analysis and intelligent sensing. In this work, 30 clinical blood samples with different storage durations (<14 days and >14 days) were tested. A deviation of 3.3% in the differentiation of blood storage durations by this system compared to physician annotation demonstrated its feasibility. This system should broaden the application of cellular mechanical assays in diverse clinical settings.

Abstract:Last decade has seen a growing trend toward smartphone-based biochemical sensing systems. Meanwhile, flexible electrochemical sensing devices like wristbands, patches, and tattoos have been widely developed for in situ detections of analyzes in accessible biofluids. For these devices, the connectivity with smartphone and the flexibility of the whole device are hard to achieve at the same time, due to the need for rigid batteries or wired connections. Here, a smartphone-based battery-free and flexible electrochemical patch is developed for real-time calcium and chloride ions detections in various biofluids. The patch is integrated with near field communication (NFC) module, on-site signal processing circuitry, and an all-printed stretchable electrode array which can maintain stable conductivity during stretching, without the need for serpentine designs. The device enables wireless power harvesting, on-site signal processing, and wireless data transmission capabilities. NFC-enabled smartphones can wirelessly power the patch and get the detection results through inductive coupling between antennas. The calcium and chloride sensors showed good sensitivity, repeatability, selectivity, and stability in quantitative detections of target ions. Ex situ measurements in serum, urine, tear, and sweat demonstrated good consistency with specialized instrument. Real-time on-body sweat analysis with the patch was also performed, which further indicated the usability and stability of the device in wearable applications. This platform provides a battery-free, wireless, and flexible solution for smartphone-based electrochemical sensing systems, which can be applied to rapid analysis of various biofluids.

Abstract:Milk is a major dietary source of calcium; thus, accurate and precise quantification of calcium in milk and other dairy products is necessary for quality control. Conventional instrumental methods are sensitive and accurate but require expensive instrumentation, sample pretreatment, skilled personnel, and a long detection time. Herein, a microfluidic paper-based analytical device (μPAD) was developed to quantify calcium ions (Ca 2+ ) in milk using a smartphone as a detector. The method utilized a complexometric reaction between Ca 2+ and ethylene diamine tetraacetic acid with murexide as an indicator. The response was the average color intensity at the detection zones measured using the Color Picker application. The proposed μPAD exhibited a good linear detection range (1 to 10 mM), a low detection limit of 0.42 mM, and a short analysis time of 2 min. The determination of Ca 2+ in milk samples using the proposed μPAD was consistent with a potentiometric method. The proposed μPAD demonstrates many advantages, including rapid detection, acceptable accuracy, low cost, low sample volume, and suitability for on-site quantification of Ca 2+ in real samples.

Lysogenic strains of group N lactic streptococci.

Abstract:A temperate bacteriophage, designated r(1)t, was inducible from the group N lactic streptococcus, Streptococcus cremoris R(1), by ultraviolet irradiation or mitomycin C treatment. Induced lysates produced plaques on lawns of three closely related S. cremoris strains, AM(1), SK(11), and US(3). Strain SK(11) was readily lysogenized. S. cremoris AM(1) was the most reliable indicator strain, although the age of the culture used for seeding plates was critical. Zones of lysis but no plaque formation were observed on lawns of nine additional S. cremoris strains. Phage r(1)t could not be detected in filtrates of stationary-phase R(1) cultures and was near the limits of detection in logarithmically growing cultures. Phage levels were still very low (1 plaque-forming unit on AM(1) per 10 induced cells) in induced lysates of R(1) cultures. These low levels of detectable phage may be attributable to an inadequate indicator, lysogenization of the indicator, adsorption of induced phage to cellular debris, concurrent induction of other undetectable phages, or the production of high proportions of defective phages. Electron micrographs of induced R(1) lysates revealed a high incidence of incomplete phage particles, fragments, and ghosts.

Abstract:Rapid diagnostic tests (RDTs) for point-of-care (POC) testing of infectious diseases are popular because they are easy to use. However, RDTs have limitations such as low sensitivity and qualitative responses that rely on subjective visual interpretation. Additionally, RDTs are made using paper-bound reagents, which leads to batch-to-batch variability, limited storage stability and detection of only the analytes they were designed for. This work presents the development of a versatile technology, based on short magneto-assays and inexpensive paper-based microfluidic electro-analytical devices (PMEDs). PMEDs were produced locally using low-cost equipment, they were stable at room temperature, easy to use, and provided quantitative and objective results. The devices served to detect alternatively a variety of magneto-assays, granting quantitation of streptavidin-HRP, biotinylated HRP and Pasmodium falciparum lactate dehydrogenase (Pf-LDH) in less than 25 min, using either commercial or customized screen-printed electrodes and measurement equipment. Furthermore, Pf-LDH detection in diluted lysed whole blood displayed a linear response between 3 and 25 ng mL −1 , detection and quantification limits ranging between 1 and 3 ng mL −1 and 6–12 ng mL −1 , respectively, and provided results that correlated with those of the reference ELISA. In short, this technology is versatile, simple, and highly cost-effective, making it perfect for POC testing.

Abstract:Electrochemical sensors provide an affordable and reliable approach towards the detection and monitoring of important biological species ranging from simple ions to complex biomolecules. The ability to miniaturize electrochemical sensors, coupled with their affordability and simple equipment requirements for signal readout, permits the use of these sensors at the point-of-care where analysis using non-invasively obtainable biofluids is receiving growing interest by the research community. This paper describes the design, fabrication, and integration of a 3D printed Mg2+ potentiometric sensor into a 3D printed microfluidic device for the quantification of Mg2+ in low-sample volume biological fluids. The sensor employs a functionalized 3D printable photocurable methacrylate-based ion-selective membrane affixed to a carbon-mesh/epoxy solid-contact transducer for the selective determination of Mg2+ in sweat, saliva and urine. The 3D printed Mg2+ ion-selective electrode (3Dp-Mg2+-ISE) provided a Nernstian response of 27.5 mV per decade with a linear range of 10 mM to 39 μM, covering the normal physiological and clinically relevant levels of Mg2+ in biofluids. 3Dp-Mg2+-ISEs selectively measure Mg2+ over other biologically present cations - sodium, potassium, calcium, ammonium - as well as provide high stability in the analytical signal with a drift of just 13 μV h-1 over 10 hours. Comparison with poly(vinylchloride)-based Mg2+-ISEs showed distinct advantages to the use of 3Dp-Mg2+-ISEs, with respect to stability, resilience towards biofouling and importantly providing a streamlined and rapid approach towards mass production of selective and reliable sensors. The miniaturization capabilities of 3D printing coupled with the benefits of microfluidic analysis (i.e., low sample volumes, minimal reagent consumption, automation of multiple assays, etc.), provides exciting opportunities for the realization of the next-generation of point-of-care diagnostic devices.

Abstract:This paper presents a novel microphysiometer for simultaneous measurements of several extracellular ions concentrations in living cells based on MLAPS (multi-light addressable potentiometric sensor). In the microphysiometer, different sensitive membranes are illuminated in parallel with n light sources at different frequencies, the response amplitudes of each frequency component can be measured on-line by parallel processing algorithm. By the experiments, we can analyze the relations of the extracellular environmental H+, Na+, K+, Ca2+ under the effects of western medicines (dilantin, phenobarbital sodium, penicillin sodium) and Chinese drugs (scutellaria, medlar, hemlock parsley), and estimate the effects of several drugs. As the novel microphysiometer works under regular cell culture conditions, cells can be repeatedly simulated with drugs to complete dose–response curve within a few hours. With the detection of a general parameter (extruded protons and ions), the system can be used to monitor the real-time process of the cells’ metabolism, observe the functional responses of different kinds of membrane-bound receptors, evaluate the drugs.

Abstract:Ionophore-based ion-selective sensors have been used in hospital analyzers for decades to measure electrolytes. Recently, there has been growing interest in affordable and accessible electrolyte measurements via at-home sensors, wearable sensors, transdermal sensors, and implantable sensors. However, the commercial success of ion-selective sensors in these new sensing modalities is hindered by the need for technically demanding on-site calibration. In fact, all ionophore-based sensors in clinical analyzers need to be calibrated with standard solutions at the point of use. We are developing calibration-free ionophore-based sensors, including ion-selective electrodes and optodes, to enable decentralized electrolyte measurements for the management of chronic heart, renal, and parathyroid diseases. In the first approach, we have designed self-calibrating solid-contact ion-selective electrodes. Due to microheterogeneities and variabilities in multiple phases and interfaces of the indicator and reference electrodes, the absolute electromotive force (EMF) varies among identically fabricated and stored sensors. We create an EMF baseline that corrects for the EMF variabilities by connecting two electrodes using an appropriately formulated ionic conductor. Upon the introduction of a sample, such as a drop of blood, the EMF change relative to this baseline allows for ion measurements with high sensor-to-sensor consistency in the absence of any calibration protocols. Surprisingly, when the cross-sectional area, viscosity, and formulation of the ionic conductor are precisely controlled and the ionic conductor is insulated from the sample, its presence does not compromise the Nernstian response slope of the primary ion in the sample. In other words, this built-in ionic bridge serves for one-point calibration before the sample addition but does not need to be removed for the sample testing, representing a novel self-calibration strategy for electrochemical sensors. In the second approach, we have for the first time functionalized the oil stream of droplet microfluidics with sensing chemicals to convert oil segments to sensors for adjacent aqueous droplets. Ionophores, ion exchangers, and dyes are dissolved in the oil to form highly selective fluorescent ion sensors. Analyte ions from the aqueous droplets are extracted into the oil segments to alter their fluorescence and absorbance. The composition of all oil segments is highly consistent, as they are from the same homogenous solution, avoiding the need for any on-site calibration. As the optical property of the oil segment is measured in a fashion that is spatially and temporally separated from the aqueous sample, this biphasic sensing method works for complicated samples such as undiluted whole blood. In the third approach, we have designed a home-use sensor based on a calibration-free oil sensor contained in a capillary tube. Only one segment of sensing oil is used for analysis of one segment of sample of a few microliters. By continuously alternating the relative position of the oil and the sample controlled by a stepper motor, efficient mass transfer between two phases is obtained. The color of the oil segment is acquired and analyzed by a smartphone to indicate the electrolyte concentration in an aqueous sample. The accuracy and precision of an at-home calcium monitor in this format have been validated in > 50 human blood samples.

Abstract:In this work, a microfluidic paper-based analytical device (μPAD) for simultaneous detection of Fe, Zn, and Mn ions using immobilized chromogenic reagents Ferene S, xylenol orange, and 1-(2-pyridylazo)-2-naphthol, respectively, is presented. As the effective recognition of analytes via respective chromogens takes place under extremely different pH conditions, experiments reported in this publication are focused on optimization of the μPAD architecture allowing for the elimination of potential cross effects. The paper-based microfluidic device was fabricated using low-cost and well-reproducible wax-printing technology. For optical detection of color changes, an ordinary office scanner and self-made RGB-data processing program were applied. Optimized and stable over time, μPADs allow fast, selective, and reproducible multianalyte determinations at submillimolar levels of respective heavy metal ions, which was confirmed by results of the analysis of solutions mimicking real samples of wastewater. The presented concept of simultaneous determination of different analytes that required extremely different conditions for detection can be useful for the development of other multianalyte microfluidic paper-based devices in the μPAD format.

Abstract:During the years 1942-1945, LERICHE described the clinical, arteriographic, and operative findings in two patients with extraordinary elongation and dilatation of the pelvic and common femoral arteries which before operation were mistaken for aneurysms. In one patient, the accompanying veins were similarly involved. LERICHE termed this disease arteria (vena) magna et do1icho and did not suggest that arteriosclerosis was the cause of the condition. These vessels were however not microscopically examined. ACKERMAN & BUTCHER (1964), in their text on surgical pathology, mentioned this condition, but there has been no further reference to it in the English literature. In order to determine whether these abnormalities represent a specific type of vascular disease, the femoral or aorto-i1io-femora1 arteriograms of 670 patients were reviewed (FRIEDENBERG & CARLSSON 1965). The present communication is a report on the clinical, roentgenographic, and pathologic findings in 9 patients in whom the arteries in the pelvis and/or lower extremities were similar to those described by LERIC,HE.

Abstract:Clinical application of direct sampling electrospray ionization mass spectrometry (ESI-MS) remains limited due to problems associated with very "dirty" sample matrices. Herein we report on a microfluidic platform that allows direct mass spectrometric analysis of serum samples of microliter sizes. The platform integrates in-line paper adsorption-based sample clean-up and voltage assisted liquid desorption ESI-MS/MS (VAL DESI-MS/MS) to detect multiple targeted compounds of clinical interest. Adenosine monophosphate (AMP), adenosine diphosphate (ADP), and adenosine triphosphate (ATP) were selected as model analytes. Simultaneous quantification of these compounds in human serum samples was demonstrated. For all the three compounds, linear calibration curves were obtained in a concentration range from 0.20 to 20.0 μmol/L with r2 values ≥ 0.996. Limits of detection were 0.019, 0.015, and 0.011 μmol/L for AMP, ADP, and ATP, respectively. Recovery was found in the range from 96.5% to 103.5% at spiking concentrations of 0.25 and 2.50 μmol/L. The results indicate that the proposed microfluidic mass spectrometric platform is robust and effective. It may have a potential in clinical analysis.

Among them, PDA is the main component of cuttlefish ink while PB is commonly used as a biological antidote for thallium, showing fascinating environmental friendliness. In the era of "Great Health", maintaining an appropriate level of vitamin C is crucial for human health as it directly impacts the proper functioning of the immune system. In this study, a handheld nonenzymatic electrochemical sensor based on biomimetic material prussian blue functionalized polydopamine is proposed for point‐of‐care testing (POCT) of vitamin C in human fluids. Particularly, Prussian blue, known as a bio‐antidote, and polydopamine, a main component of cuttlefish ink, ensure the safety and reliability of home testing. The experimental results quantitatively demonstrate that this electrochemical POCT sensor enables rapid and accurate determination of vitamin C with a wide linear detection range from 0.2 to 200 μm, a low limit of detection at 0.03 μm, and high sensitivity at 0.33 μA μm−1 cm−2. More importantly, the performance evaluation using human urine and saliva samples confirms satisfactory accuracy and recovery rates for vitamin C determination by this electrochemical POCT sensor. Thus, the proposed handheld electrochemical POCT sensor holds potential utility as an affordable tool for VC determination and home‐based healthcare.

Abstract:The steady-state level of serum calcium is of great significance to human body. Accurate and rapid detection of serum calcium is a crucial component of clinical diagnosis and blood calcium census. Current detection of Ca 2+ in living environment mainly focus on intracellular imaging, and there are few probes appropriate for serum calcium detection. In this work, we designed a fluorescence sensing system based on the indicator displacement assays (IDAs) strategy using supramolecular complex formed by 3,4,9,10-tetra-(4-trimethylaminobutoxy-carbonyl)-perylene (PBTMA) and casein phosphopeptides (CPPs). Due to the synergistic effect of non-covalent interactions, the complex can be induced by Ca 2+ to disintegrate, thus realizing the visual and rapid detection of serum calcium. The quantitative range is 0.01∼3.0 mM, while the limit of detection (LOD) and the visual detection limit are 8.4 μM and 0.1 mM, respectively. This method features good stability, selectivity and anti-interference. It can be used for serum samples (recovery rate:103.4%∼106.3%; relative standard deviation (RSD): 2.21%∼3.46%. Furthermore, a portable device for rapid serum calcium measurement was designed, which could substantially improve the applicability of this method. To our knowledge, this is the first organic small molecule fluorescent probe capable of application in the range of serum calcium concentrations.

Abstract:Biomarkers and their concentration levels are critical indicators of metabolomics for clinical applications. Rapid and sensitive analysis methods are essential for realizing timely and efficient quantitation of those significant biomarkers. In this work, a self-driven microfluidic immunosensor was developed for rapid all-in-one separation, enrichment, and detection of biomarkers. This immunosensor was constructed from a cyclic olefin copolymer (COC) channel layer and a polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) sensing layer. The COC channel layer was modified through protein adsorption, immobilization, and remaining active site blocking. The obtained hydrophilic microchannels not only reduce the nonspecific adsorption, but also provide stable capillary-driven flow generation with linear velocities up to 20 mm/s for aqueous solution auto-injection. The PDMS sensing layer was modified using capture antibodies to accomplish affinity recognition of target biomarkers. Procalcitonin (PCT) and serum amyloid A (SAA) were selected as model biomarkers in the feasibility study on applying the self-driven microfluidic immunosensor to bioassay. The limits of detection of PCT and SAA were 7.9 ng/L and 7.6 μg/L, respectively. Moreover, the whole process can be accomplished within 60 min with excellent selectivity and reproducibility. In clinical serum sample analysis, satisfactory recoveries were achieved for PCT and SAA in the ranges of 85.0-103.0% and 95.5-106.0%, respectively, with relative standard deviations less than 5.3%. The method accuracy was further confirmed by the results of commercial immunoassay kits. This simple and easily operated immunosensor provides a rapid and sensitive biomarker analysis tool, and promotes the further development of automated and easy-to-use microfluidic immunoassays.
Total Iron Measurement in Human Serum With a Novel Smartphone-Based Assay

Abstract:Background: Abnormally low or high blood iron levels are common health conditions worldwide and can seriously affect an individual's overall well-being. A low-cost point-of-care technology that measures blood iron markers with a goal of both preventing and treating iron-related disorders represents a significant advancement in medical care delivery systems. Methods: A novel assay equipped with an accurate, storable, and robust dry sensor strip, as well as a smartphone mount and (iPhone) app is used to measure total iron in human serum. The sensor strip has a vertical flow design and is based on an optimized chemical reaction. The reaction strips iron ions from blood-transport proteins, reduces Fe(III) to Fe(II), and chelates Fe(II) with ferene, with the change indicated by a blue color on the strip. The smartphone mount is robust and controls the light source of the color reading App, which is calibrated to obtain output iron concentration results. The real serum samples are then used to assess iron concentrations from the new assay, and validated through intra-laboratory and inter-laboratory experiments. The intra-laboratory validation uses an optimized iron detection assay with multi-well plate spectrophotometry. The inter-laboratory validation method is performed in a commercial testing facility (LabCorp). Results: The novel assay with the dry sensor strip and smartphone mount, and App is seen to be sensitive to iron detection with a dynamic range of 50 – $300~mu text{g}$ /dL, sensitivity of 0.00049 a.u/ $mu text{g}$ /dL, coefficient of variation (CV) of 10.5%, and an estimated detection limit of $sim 15~mu text{g}$ /dL These analytical s-ecifications are useful for predicting iron deficiency and overloads. The optimized reference method has a sensitivity of 0.00093 a.u/ $mu text{g}$ /dL and CV of 2.2%. The correlation of serum iron concentrations (N = 20) between the optimized reference method and the novel assay renders a slope of 0.95, and a regression coefficient of 0.98, suggesting that the new assay is accurate. Last, a spectrophotometric study of the iron detection reaction kinetics is seen to reveal the reaction order for iron and chelating agent. Conclusion: The new assay is able to provide accurate results in intra- and inter- laboraty validations, and has promising features of both mobility and low-cost manufacturing suitable for global healthcare settings.
A Portable Magnetic Particle Spectrometer for Future Rapid and Wash-Free Bioassays

Abstract:Nowadays, there is an increasing demand for more accessible routine diagnostics for patients with respect to high accuracy, ease of use, and low cost. However, the quantitative and high accuracy bioassays in large hospitals and laboratories usually require trained technicians and equipment that is both bulky and expensive. In addition, the multistep bioassays and long turnaround time could severely affect the disease surveillance and control especially in pandemics such as influenza and COVID-19. In view of this, a portable, quantitative bioassay device will be valuable in regions with scarce medical resources and help relieve burden on local healthcare systems. Herein, we introduce the MagiCoil diagnostic device, an inexpensive, portable, quantitative, and rapid bioassay platform based on the magnetic particle spectrometer (MPS) technique. MPS detects the dynamic magnetic responses of magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs) and uses the harmonics from oscillating MNPs as metrics for sensitive and quantitative bioassays. This device does not require trained technicians to operate and employs a fully automatic, one-step, and wash-free assay with a user friendly smartphone interface. Using a streptavidin-biotin binding system as a model, we show that the detection limit of the current portable device for streptavidin is 64 nM (equal to 5.12 pmole). In addition, this MPS technique is very versatile and allows for the detection of different diseases just by changing the surface modifications on MNPs. Although MPS-based bioassays show high sensitivities as reported in many literatures, at the current stage, this portable device faces insufficient sensitivity and needs further improvements.
