Abstract:We experimentally demonstrate fabrication of a spiral-shaped polymer microdisk cavity by femtosecond laser direct writing via two-photon polymerization of dye-doped resins. This spiral microresonator supports highly directional emission from the notch with a high-Q factor exceeding 1.6 x 10(3) and a low lasing threshold at room temperature. Our numerical simulation results reveal that clockwise propagating high-Q whispering gallery-like modes may couple to the counterclockwise modes and give the directional output. Benefiting from the low cost and good chemical compatibility of polymer materials, the fabrication of such spiral-shaped polymer microlasers with high-Q and unidirectional emission holds great potentials for use as elements of integrated organic optoelectronic devices.

Abstract:Optical microcavities have been paid enormous attentions as a basic integrated element in photonic devices including micromodulators, microfilters, and microsensors. In particular, the microcavities that can produce unidirectional and single-mode lasing emissions are greatly demanded to meet the challenge of integrating high-efficiency and high-sensitivity optical functional systems. Herein, a three-dimensional polymer microlaser composed of stacked circular-ring-shaped and spiral-ring-shaped microcavities is fabricated directly on a narrow bandpass filter substrate by the femtosecond laser processing technique. The on-chip polymer microlaser provides a room-temperature, low-threshold, unidirectional, and single-mode laser output, resulting from the coupling between the two stacked microcavities. The fabrication of the on-chip low-threshold polymer microlaser opens up a possibility toward the integration of a variety of polymer microcavities for organic optoelectronic devices.
Controllable Broadband Multicolour Single-Mode Polarized Laser in a Dye-Assembled Homoepitaxial MOF Microcrystal

Abstract:Multicolour single-mode polarized microlasers with visible to near-infrared output have very important applications in photonic integration and multimodal biochemical sensing/imaging but are very difficult to realize. Here, we demonstrate a single crystal with multiple segments based on the host-guest metal-organic framework ZJU-68 hierarchically hybridized with different dye molecules generating controllable single-mode green, red, and near-infrared lasing, with the lasing mode mechanism revealed by computational simulation. The segmented and oriented assembly of different dye molecules within the ZJU-68 microcrystal causes it to act as a shortened resonator, enabling us to achieve dynamically controllable multicolour single-mode lasing with a low three-colour-lasing threshold of ~1.72 mJ/cm 2 (approximately seven times lower than that of state-of-the-art designed heterostructure alloys, as reported by Fan F et al. (Nat. Nanotechnol. 10:796–803, 2015) considering the single pulse energy density) and degree of polarization >99.9%. Furthermore, the resulting three-colour single-mode lasing possesses the largest wavelength coverage of ~186 nm (ranging from ~534 to ~720 nm) ever reported. These findings may open a new route to the exploitation of multicolour single-mode micro/nanolasers constructed by MOF engineering for photonic and biochemical applications.

Abstract:Electrically responsive photonic crystals represent one of the most promising intelligent material candidates for technological applications in optoelectronics. In this research, dye-doped polymer-stabilized cholesteric liquid crystals（PSCLCs） with negative dielectric anisotropy were fabricated, and mirrorless lasing with an electrically tunable wavelength was successfully achieved. Unlike conventional liquid-crystal lasers, the proposed laser aided in tuning the emission wavelength through controlling the reflection bandwidth based on gradient pitch distribution. The principal advantage of the electrically controlled dye-doped PSCLC laser is that the electric field is applied parallel to the helical axis, which changes the pitch gradient instead of rotating the helix axis, thus keeping the heliconical structure intact during lasing. The broad tuning range（～110 nm） of PSCLC lasers,coupled with their stable emission performance, continuous tunability, and easy fabrication, leads to its numerous potential applications in intelligent optoelectronic devices, such as sensing, medicine, and display.

Abstract:Tunable semiconductor lasers are often listed in critical technology road maps for future dense-wavelength-division-multiplexing (DWDM) systems and high-performance computing systems, and they are increasingly demanded in long-haul, metropolitan, and access networks. The capability to produce such lasers directly on silicon (Si) could boost the use of Si photonics and facilitate the adoption of optical data transmission even at the chip scale. Moreover, just the use of Si as a cheap and large-diameter substrate for device production is very advantageous, as the fabrication can take advantage of the highly optimized processing techniques and economy of scale enabled by decades of development in Si microelectronics. Here, we report a tunable single-wavelength quantum dot (QD) laser directly grown on Si. The high carrier confinement and a real dot density of QDs provide reduced sensitivity to crystalline defects, which allows for exceptional lasing performance even in lattice-mismatched material systems. The discrete density of states of dots yields unique gain properties that show promise for improved device performance and new functionalities relative to the quantum well counterparts, including high temperature stability, low threshold operation, reduced sidewall recombination, and isolator-free stability. We implement a simple, integrable architecture to achieve over 45 dB side-mode-suppression-ratio without involving regrowth steps or subwavelength grating lithography. Under continuous-wave electrical injection at room temperature, we achieved a 16 nm tuning range with output powers of over 2.7 mW per tuning wavelength. This work represents a step towards using III–V/Si epitaxy to form efficient, easily manufacturable on-chip Si light sources for not only DWDM networks, but also spectroscopy, biosensors, and many other emerging applications.

Abstract:We introduce Dynamic Constitutional Frameworks (DCFs), macromolecular structures that efficiently bind and transfect double stranded DNA. DCFs are easily synthesizable adaptive 3D networks consisting of core connection centres reversibly linked via labile imine bonds both to linear polyethyleneglycol (PEG, ∼1500 Da) and to branched polyethyleneimine (bPEI, ∼800 Da). DCFs bind linear and plasmid DNA, forming particulate polyplexes of 40-200 nm in diameter. The polyplexes are stable during gel electrophoresis, well tolerated by cells in culture, and exhibit significant transfection activity. We show that an optimal balance of PEG and bPEI components is important for building DCFs that are non-toxic and exhibit good cellular transfection activity. Our study demonstrates the versatility and effectiveness of DCFs as promising new vectors for DNA delivery.

Abstract:Quantum dots (QDs) laser has become an important way to solve micro-application problems in many fields. However, single wavelength distributed Bragg reflector (DBR) has many limitations in practical applications, such as signal transmission. How to realize multiwavelength DBR lasing output simply is a challenge. To achieve a stable multi-wavelength quantum dots laser in the near-infrared region, the perovskite CsPbI3 QDs laser with DBR structure is developed in this paper. A tetragonal crystal structure with complete bonding information and no defect is explained by X-ray diffractions (XRD) and Raman spectrum. The cross-section morphology of the DBR laser and the surface morphology of QDs is measured by scanning electron microscope (SEM) and transmission electron microscope (TEM), respectively. An elliptical light propagation field and a double wavelength laser radiation are obtained from the finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) simulation. The output of the three wavelength lasers at 770 nm, 823 nm, and 873 nm is measured. The emission time of a DBR laser is about 2 h, and the average fluorescence quantum yield is 60%. The cavity length selection and energy level model are put in place to clearly see the working mechanism. All the results suggest that an effective and stable CsPbI3 quantum dots DBR laser is realized.

Abstract:The whispering gallery mode (WGM) microcavity has a high-quality factor and small mode volume, for the property of confining photons in a small volume for a long time, which enhances the light-matter interaction. Combining with quantum dots that act as gain medium, it can realize low-threshold and narrow-linewidth microlasers with excellent performance. However, achieving conventional whispering gallery mode lasers still requires complex preparation conditions. Here, we report a narrow linewidth whispering gallery mode lasing from all-inorganic perovskite quantum dots (CsPbBr3 QDs), illustrating facile and cost-effective properties. CsPbBr3 QDs with excellent properties were synthesized by hot injection method and used as gain media for lasers, and microspheres as optical resonators. The whispering gallery mode laser with a quality factor Q of 4791 and a narrow linewidth of 0.11 nm was obtained at room temperature. The WGM microlaser achieved by this paper could be a great application prospects in biotechnology.

Abstract:The solution-processable colloidal quantum dots (CQDs) attract great interests in small-size laser applications because of the high quantum yields and the tunable emission wavelengths. The small CQD lasers based on the microplates are of importance in the highly integrated photonic circuits, and the simple and low-cost manufacturing methods to obtain the CQD microplates are greatly desired and appealing in applications. Here, by employing the simple drop-casting and water-dripping method, the high-quality CQD microplates with various shapes and sizes are experimentally manufactured under the proper solvents and solvent ratio as well as environment temperature. Evidently, this manufacturing method does not require any expensive or special instruments. Because of both the large gain coefficients and the high quality factors of the CQD microplates, the room-temperature planar multi- and single-mode CQD lasers with p-polarized emissions are experimentally realized under low pump thresholds. Moreover, it is demonstrated that the planar CQD microplate laser is easy to be integrated with the waveguides on chips. This simple and low-cost method to manufacture the CQD microplates opens a wide range of possible activities in the area of solid-state small lasers, which are important building blocks for the true integration of optoelectronic circuitry.

Abstract:The potential of carbon quantum dots (CQDs) as a gain medium in lasers is explored, aiming to overcome challenges in achieving narrowband, unidirectional, and tunable laser outputs. By employing a self‐assembled microstructure with Au nanoparticles, Ag nanowires, and a hollow‐core metal‐cladding resonator, the study demonstrates the realization of a low‐threshold CQDs laser with wavelength tunability. Photonic integrated circuits (PICs) are coupled with the laser to create active devices for optical communication, optical interconnection, and optical computing. Consequently, the light source remains a focal point of extensive research and development. Currently, the utilization of carbon quantum dots as a gain medium in photonic cavity lasers is accomplished and suggested as a viable approach for achieving active PICs. Nevertheless, challenges persist in achieving narrowband lasing beam output in one direction that is real‐time tunable while minimizing energy losses. These issues represent an active area of ongoing research. This article presents a self‐assembled microstructure and proposes a method for obtaining tunable, narrowband, unidirectional lasing beams. The objective is to stimulate further development in integration of PICs with lasers, extending beyond these applications, to realize substantial performance gains, eco‐friendly solutions, and efficient mass production.

Abstract:Semiconductor quantum dots are promising candidates for the generation of nonclassical light. Coupling a quantum dot to a device capable of providing polarization-selective enhancement of optical transitions is highly beneficial for advanced functionalities such as efficient resonant driving schemes or applications based on optical cyclicity. Here, we demonstrate broadband polarization-selective enhancement by coupling a quantum dot emitting in the telecom O-band to an elliptical bullseye resonator. We report bright single-photon emission with a degree of linear polarization of 96%, Purcell factor of 3.9, and count rates up to 3 MHz. Furthermore, we present a measurement of two-photon interference without any external polarization filtering and demonstrate compatibility with compact Stirling cryocoolers by operating the device at temperatures up to 40 K. These results represent an important step towards practical integration of optimal quantum dot photon sources in deployment-ready setups.

Ultralow-Threshold and Color Tunable Continuous-Wave Lasing at Room-Temperature from In-Situ Fabricated Perovskite Quantum Dots.

Abstract:Room-temperature-operated continuous-wave lasers have been intensively pursed in the field of on-chip photonics. The realization of a continuous-wave laser strongly relies on the development of gain materials. To date, there is still a huge gap between the current gain materials and commercial requirements. In this work, we demonstrate continuous-wave lasers at room temperature using rationally designed in situ fabricated perovskite quantum dots in polyacrylonitrile films on a distributed feedback cavity. The achieved threshold values are 15, 24, and 58 W/cm(2) for green, red, and blue lasers, respectively, which are one order lower than the reported values for the conventional CdSe quantum dot-based continuous-wave laser. Except for the high photoluminescence quantum yields, smooth surface, and high thermal conductivity of the resulting films, the key success of an ultralow laser threshold can be explained by the interaction of polyacrylonitrile and perovskite induced "charge spatial separation" effects. This progress opens up a door to achieve on-chip continuous-wave lasers for photonic applications.
Solution‐Processed Perovskite Quantum Dot Quasi‐BIC Laser from Miniaturized Low‐Lateral‐Loss Cavity

Abstract:CsPbBr3 Quantum dot (QD) cavity‐supported BIC lasers are demonstrated by integrating an isolated CsPbBr3 QD cavity on a TiO2 nanocylinder array. The fabrication of well‐defined patterns of QDs via a solution process allows us to take advantage of the pattern edges to reduce losses. Finally, lasing with a miniaturized BIC laser having a cavity size down to 10 × 10 μm2 is achieved making it the smallest among existing solution‐processed BIC lasers. Laser devices produced via solution‐processed perovskite quantum dots (QDs) offer broad spectral tunability as well as ease of fabrication. Utilizing quasi‐bound states in the continuum (quasi‐BIC) modes, solution‐processed QD laser devices have been demonstrated with a nanostructure coated in a thin‐film gain media configuration. However, light leakage through thin‐film guiding from the cavity side edges becomes more pronounced when shrinking the cavity size, posing challenges for the miniaturization of quasi‐BIC‐based lasers. Here, the fabrication of well‐defined patterns of QDs via a solution process allows them to take advantage of the pattern edges to reduce losses through the cavity edges. A single‐mode BIC laser is reported by using CsPbBr3 QDs with a narrow linewidth of ≈0.1 nm. Importantly, a miniaturized quasi‐BIC laser is realized with a device size as small as 10 × 10 μm2, making it the smallest among existing solution‐processed BIC lasers. This work provides a strategy for developing ultra‐compact BIC lasers via solution‐processed gain media.

Polariton lasing in Mie-resonant perovskite nanocavity

Abstract:Deeply subwavelength lasers (or nanolasers) are highly demanded for compact on-chip bioimaging and sensing at the nanoscale. One of the main obstacles for the development of single-particle nanolasers with all three dimensions shorter than the emitting wavelength in the visible range is the high lasing thresholds and the resulting overheating. Here we exploit exciton-polariton condensation and mirror-image Mie modes in a cuboid CsPbBr$_3$ nanoparticle to achieve coherent emission at the visible wavelength of around 0.53~$\mu $m from its ultra-small ($\approx$0.007$\mu$m$^3$ or $\approx\lambda^3$/20) semiconductor nanocavity. The polaritonic nature of the emission from the nanocavity localized in all three dimensions is proven by direct comparison with corresponding one-dimensional and two-dimensional waveguiding systems with similar material parameters. Such a deeply subwavelength nanolaser is enabled not only by the high values for exciton binding energy ($\approx$35 meV), refractive index ($>$2.5 at low temperature), and luminescence quantum yield of CsPbBr$_3$, but also by the optimization of polaritons condensation on the Mie resonances. Moreover, the key parameters for optimal lasing conditions are intermode free spectral range and phonons spectrum in CsPbBr$_3$, which govern polaritons condensation path. Such chemically synthesized colloidal CsPbBr$_3$ nanolasers can be easily deposited on arbitrary surfaces, which makes them a versatile tool for integration with various on-chip systems.

Abstract:The polarization control of micro- and nanolasers is an important topic in nanophotonics. Up to now, the simultaneous generation of two distinguishable orthogonally polarized lasing modes from a single organic microlaser remains a critical challenge. Here, we demonstrate simultaneously orthogonally polarized dual lasing from a microcavity filled with an organic single crystal exhibiting selective strong coupling. We show that the non-Hermiticity due to polarization-dependent losses leads to the formation of real and imaginary Fermi arcs with exceptional points. Simultaneous orthogonally polarized lasing becomes possible thanks to the eigenstate mixing by the photonic spin-orbit coupling at the imaginary Fermi arcs. A birefringent Bragg grating prepared by a femtosecond laser point-by-point technique in a polarization-maintaining fiber (PMF) is used to provide external-cavity feedback, and its polarization-dependent characteristics enable selection of the main polarization mode and linewidth narrowing of the ridge waveguide emission gain chip (GC). This compact and robust ECSL achieves an output power of > 60 mW and a polarization extinction ratio (PER) of > 30 dB. We simulate and calculate the linewidth and injection current, while a Lorentz linewidth of 2.58 kHz is obtained based on delayed self-heterodyne beat frequency measurement. This flexible and cost-effective solution allows realization of a compact ECSL with linear polarization and a narrow linewidth.

Abstract:Characterizing and manipulating the circular polarization of light is central to numerous emerging technologies, including spintronics and quantum computing. Separately, monolayer tungsten disulfide (WS2) is a versatile material that has demonstrated promise in a variety of applications, including single photon emitters and valleytronics. Here, we demonstrate a method to tune the photoluminescence (PL) intensity (factor of x161), peak position (38.4meV range), circular polarization (39.4% range), and valley polarization of a Bi2Se3-WS2 2D heterostructure using a low-power laser (0.762uW) in ambient. Changes are spatially confined to the laser spot, enabling submicron (814nm) features, and are long-term stable (>334 days). PL and valley polarization changes can be controllably reversed through laser exposure in vacuum, allowing the material to be erased and reused. Atmospheric experiments and first-principles calculations indicate oxygen diffusion modulates the exciton radiative vs. non-radiative recombination pathways, where oxygen absorption leads to brightening, and desorption to darkening.
