Abstract:Microfluidic chips have been proven to be a powerful technical platform for chemical synthesis, biomedical research, and optofluidic devices. Here, we report a smart microfluidic chip (SMC) with multiple functionality to sense the status or incidents occurring on chip. The SMC is enabled by a soft, flexible and attachable film embedded with optical micro/nanofibres (MNFs), which is highly compatible with microfluidic chips fabricated by lithography. Based on the transition from guided modes to radiation modes of the MNFs, simultaneous flow rate detection in multiple channels is demonstrated on a SMC with high sensitivity. The MNF-enabled SMC is also capable of monitoring the transportation and morphology of microfluidic droplets with fast response. In addition, real-time counting of the magnetic droplets is performed to verify the SMC's anti-electromagnetic interference ability. This SMC is unique and may play an important role in microreactors, droplet microfluidics and optofluidic sensors.

Abstract:Inverse opal of molecularly imprinted photonic hydrogels (MIPHs) represents an important colorimetric sensing platform, where the order and connectivity of inverse-opal structure is critical. However, MIPHs constructed by conventional approaches generally bear many cracks and merely presents order in short range. Herein, we report a facile approach to overcome these challenges by integrating evaporative co-deposition of colloids suspended within a hydrogel precursor and polymerization of monomers in single step. Co-deposition of colloids, imprinted molecules, and polymeric monomers as well as concurrent polymerization is firstly studied in detail. As-prepared inverse opal of MIPHs presents high order in long range and almost no crack. Different parameters affecting sensing performance were optimized in detail. MIPHs present high selectivity, sensitivity, and rapid response due to highly ordered inverse-opal structure and molecular recognition sites which are situated either at surface or in proximity to surface. Additionally, a mathematic relationship between Bragg diffraction wavelength shift of MIPHs and analyte concentration is proposed, enabling that MIPHs can not only be used in qualitative detection by visually perceptible color, but could quantitatively infer analyte concentration based on fitted equation. This work would provide an important inspiration for future construction of molecularly imprinted photonic hydrogels.

Abstract:Photonic crystals with orderly periodic structure and manipulated structural colors have garnered widespread attention in sensors field. However, the unsatisfactory detection range, low sensitivity and inconvenient integration highly limit their further practical applications. In this paper, by combining TiO2 inverse opal photonic crystal with polyacrylamide hydrogel, a novel organic-inorganic composite solvents responsive photonic hydrogel (SRPH) was developed. By encapsulating TiO2 inverse opal photonic crystal with high refractive index in this hydrogel, the photonic hydrogels, therefore, possess bright structural colors. Due to the discrepancy in swelling rate of SRPH film in various solvents (ethanol, dimethyl formamide, dimethyl sulfoxide, etc.), it can identify these organic solvents through the rapid change of structural colors and detect the concentrations of the solvent in a wide range. Even for solvents with similar refractive index, it can be clearly distinguished, along with the excellent repeatability. Benefiting from the wide detection range and high sensitivity, the chip sensors were then developed by integrating multiple hydrogel films into the microfluidic system, which have high efficiency in solvent naked-eye multi-identification and concentration multi-detection. The new composite photonic hydrogels provide a reference for the design of functional photonic crystals and next-generation application of sensors.
Fabrication of Silica Opal Array with High Mechanical Strength.

Abstract:This paper focuses on fabrication of opal structures by self-assembling silica spheres, which can be used as an array of high throughput and low cost reactors or micro-filters. The reactors can carry out hundreds different reactions in parallel; while there is about 50 nano-liter reagent consumed in each reactor. It not only provides large surface area for reaction, but also solves the issue of high throughput experiments. The mechanical strength of the opal has to be high enough to withstand fluid flushing during sample loading and cleaning. In this paper, the optimized process is developed to fabricate the robust and crack-less opal membrane.

Abstract:This study communicates a novel approach to fabricating photonic elastomers using photonic ink infused with SiNPs. The resulting elastomers demonstrate responsive color changes under mechanical stress and upon water interaction. The fabrication of macroscopic photonic crystal devices with complex geometries is precisely controlled via a DLP‐based 3D printing technique. The traditional fabrication of opal‐structured photonic crystals is constrained by the rate of solvent evaporation, a process that is not only time‐consuming but also labor‐intensive. This study introduces a paradigm shift by incorporating silica nanoparticles (SiNPs) with high zeta potentials and hydrogen bonding capabilities into an elastomeric matrix, resulting in a novel non‐close‐packed structure. This innovation circumvents the limitations of conventional methods by enabling the rapid formation of photonic inks (PI) into vibrant and luminous photonic elastomers (PEs) within seconds. These PEs demonstrate remarkable mechanochromic properties, exhibiting dynamic color changes across the visible spectrum in response to tensile and compressive deformations. Furthermore, the presence of hydroxyl groups endows the PEs with superior water‐responsiveness, which can be finely tuned through the ink formulation. The elimination of solvent evaporation dependency facilitates the fabrication of macroscopic photonic crystal devices with complex geometries using digital light processing (DLP)‐based 3D printing. This approach ensures exceptional optical performance and high customization potential. The resulting PEs hold significant promise for applications in smart wearables, soft robotics, and advanced human‐machine interface technologies.

Abstract:Photonic crystals (PCs) are an important subset of photonic materials with specific optical properties, which can be utilized for structural color printing, anti-counterfeiting technologies, chemical sensors and so on. However, the fabrication of scalable, high-quality and uniform photonic crystal films at room temperature still remains a big challenge. Herein, a fast, energy efficient and scalable process is reported for the first time. A high-quality polymeric photonic crystal film can be fabricated from the uniform core/shell particle slurry within several seconds by a calendering process. The obtained crystalline structure can be rapidly captured by photo-curing, and the resultant PC films show extremely strong iridescent tunable structural colors. Because the as-designed PC film matrix is sensitive to solutions with different solubility parameters, a prototype demo sensor is firstly set up for quick detection of the composition of the alcohol/H2O mixture as a model of white spirits, which has the feature of reversible and linear quantitative sensing performance. In addition, the as-prepared PC film is further developed as an inexpensive test strip showing quick detection of ethanol/octane mixtures (possessing different solubility parameters) as a model of ethanol gasoline. This facile, scalable and energy efficient fabrication procedure is exceedingly promising for high-throughput production, showing great potential for industrialization of PC sensors and detectors. The combination of uniform particles and a dispersion medium can be potentially designed for different stimuli responsive systems, which is beneficial for applications ranging from sensing, anti-counterfeiting, to some special optical devices.

Abstract:Photonic crystals, which are materials with periodic dielectric constants on the submicroscale, have been the focus of research for an extended period. Photonic soft materials have been extensively developed for use as colorimetric indicators and mechanochromic sensors, but their limited mechanical properties and molding characteristics only suitable for films restrict their practical implementation. Herein we report an approach to synthesize highly stretchable photonic soft materials based on a hydrogel system that is cross-linked by a crystalline colloidal array. The intrinsic inhomogeneous submicroscale structure is exploited for effective reinforcement in the multiphase system of the photonic crystals. The photonic hydrogels exhibit a high deformation capacity, with a stretching deformation above 2800% and compression above 98%. The gel has a full-color tunable range and shows 460 nm photonic shifts that can be reversibly actuated by a small compressive stress (kPa level) and can be ink-written to form patterns and freestanding structures. Mechanochromic sensors are constructed based on the three-dimensional and two-dimensional Bragg diffraction of the gel. Owing to its mechanical strength, formability, and tunable colors, the gel can be used in wearable optical devices, colorimetric tactile sensors, and full-color displays.

Abstract:This article describes an opal photonic crystal double‐network hydrogel with structural color and fluorescent responsiveness. The opal hydrogel is combining a double‐network hydrogel with polystyrene photonic crystals. The double‐network of the opal hydrogel is composed of nanocomposite hydrogel as the first network and ionic crosslinked hydrogel as the second network. The opal hydrogel exhibits structural color responsiveness to mental ions and organic solvents. In addition, the opal hydrogel shows fluorescent responsiveness to various mental ions. Moreover, the characteristics of nanocomposite and double‐network crosslinking ensure that the opal hydrogel has enough mechanical properties to undergo a long‐time or cycle visual detection. Photonic crystal hydrogels are widely used in the field of visual detection, based on the response of the structural color to external stimulus, such as pH, temperature, near‐infrared light, and so on. Here, we develop an opal photonic crystal hydrogel by combining polystyrene (PS) photonic crystals with a fluorescent double‐network hydrogel and focus on both its visual detection function and mechanical property. The opal hydrogel is composed of nanocomposite hydrogel as the first network and ionic crosslinked hydrogel as the second network. The introduction of PS photonic crystals and terbium ions endows the opal hydrogel distinctive structural colors and fluorescence, respectively. Because of volume changes, the structural color of the opal hydrogel selectively responses to metal ions and organic solvents. Attributing to the ion exchange interaction, the opal hydrogel exhibits fluorescent responses to various metal ions. Combining the responsiveness of structural color and fluorescence, a visual dual‐detection mode is set up, with better detection sensitivity and selectivity. Moreover, the characteristics of nanocomposite and double‐network crosslinking ensure the opal hydrogel enough mechanical properties to undergo cycle visual detection. Consequently, the fabricated opal hydrogel is promising for use in visual detection to multiple substances in single‐ or dual‐detection mode.

Abstract:Although materials with structural colours are known to be resistant to photobleaching, the damage caused by structural failure and lack of suitable fabrication methods limit their practical uses. Herein, confinementmediated self-assembly of colloidal crystals in dynamic borate ester-based networks is demonstrated to produce spherical opal composites using a microfluidic device. The resulting optical beads are flowable and injectable, facilitating injection moulding of three-dimensionally well-defined macroscopic opals. Further, the opal composites formed in semi-spherical sessile microdroplets can serve as individual pixels for twodimensional patterns integrating angle-independent structural colours and self-healing characteristics. These findings provide novel insights for the development of multi-scale opal constructs with ability to resist the physical damage and to increase the lifetime.

Abstract:A fast self‐assembly method of photonic crystal (PC) is developed with horizontal precipitation of silica nanoparticles in polydimethylsiloxane fence, which can be completed within 1–4 h. The wearable device with PC hydrogel can serve as strain sensor and temperature sensor, with brilliant color changes and electronic signal outputs simultaneously. Structural colors from photonic crystals (PCs) have attracted emerging attention in the research area of wearable sensors. Conventional self‐assembly of PC takes days to weeks. Here, a fast self‐assembly method of PC with horizontal precipitation of silica nanoparticles (NPs) in a polydimethylsiloxane fence, which can be completed within 1–4 h depending on the fence parameters, is introduced. The resultant PC exhibits tunable structural colors in the entire visible spectrum. With infiltration of composite hydrogels containing acrylic acid, acrylamide, chitosan, and carbon nanotubes (CNTs) into the gaps of NPs to form an inverse opal PC, a structural color hydrogel that can quickly respond to different stimuli, including strain and temperature, is obtained. Moreover, with the addition of CNTs, the composite PC hydrogel can also output an electronic signal together with optical color changes. Based on these extraordinary responsive behaviors, the PC hydrogel sensor for quantitative feedback to external stimuli of stretching, bending, pressing, and thermal stimuli, with brilliant color change and electronic signal outputs simultaneously, is demonstrated. This fast‐assembled PC hydrogel with excellent responsive properties has great potential for applications in wearable devices, mechanical sensors, temperature sensors, and colorimetric displays.

Abstract:By taking advantage of the hydrophobicity of dry polystyrene colloidal crystal (opal) films and the large surface tension of water, a convectively self-assembled polystyrene opal film on a hydrophilic glass substrate can be peeled off from the substrate and floated on the water surface. A layer transfer technique was developed to sequentially stack floating opal films of different sphere sizes, resulting in opaline hetero photonic crystals. The feasibility of this technique to planar defect engineering in a self-assembled colloidal photonic crystal was also demonstrated. Both structural observation and optical characterization confirmed the crystalline integrity of the resultant opaline heterostructures.

Abstract:Evaporation-induced self-assembly of colloidal particles is one of the most versatile fabrication routes to obtain large-area colloidal crystals; however, the formation of uncontrolled "drying cracks" due to gradual solvent evaporation represents a significant challenge of this process. While several methods are reported to minimize crack formation during evaporation-induced colloidal assembly, here an approach is reported to take advantage of the crack formation as a patterning tool to fabricate microscopic photonic structures with controlled sizes and geometries. This is achieved through a mechanistic understanding of the fracture behavior of three different types of opal structures, namely, direct opals (colloidal crystals with no matrix material), compound opals (colloidal crystals with matrix material), and inverse opals (matrix material templated by a sacrificial colloidal crystal). This work explains why, while direct and inverse opals tend to fracture along the expected {111} planes, the compound opals exhibit a different cracking behavior along the nonclose-packed {110} planes, which is facilitated by the formation of cleavage-like fracture surfaces. The discovered principles are utilized to fabricate photonic microbricks by programming the crack initiation at specific locations and by guiding propagation along predefined orientations during the self-assembly process, resulting in photonic microbricks with controlled sizes and geometries.

Abstract:Pressure sensing based on high-sensitivity and fast-response photonic devices is essential for various transient and dynamic processes in diverse fields. Therefore, a miniaturized device being capable of precise and reliable detection is highly desired for the development of optical pressure sensors. Here, we develop a compact pressure sensor, showing a sensitivity of 1 μA/kPa and a fast response time of <10 ms, based on a III-nitride photonic chip combined with a PDMS membrane on submillimeter-scale footprints. The emitter and detector are monolithically integrated on a GaN-on-sapphire chip consisting of InGaN/GaN multiquantum wells, enabling quantitative readout for pressure sensing. Self-assembled polystyrene nanospheres are embedded in the PDMS layer and function as an opal-based photonic crystal, transforming the received mechanical signals into optical signals which can be precisely determined through recorded photocurrent. This underlying mechanism of angle-dependent reflective characteristics via the photonic bandgap effect is well fitted by our theoretical simulation. Sensors with opal films embedded at different vertical positions are fabricated, and their corresponding performance is systematically studied and compared through a series of pressure loading/unloading tests. Abstract:Responsive photonic crystals have attracted much attention due to their strong capability to manipulate the propagation of light in the visible region, but it is still a big challenge to invisibility and mechanical stability. Here, the novel Poly(ether sulfone)/Poly(acrylic acid) inverse opal photonic crystals, which have high mechanical stability and can release visible patterns after wetting with water, are discussed. The Poly(ether sulfone)/Poly(acrylic acid) inverse opal photonic crystals are also responsive to the concentration of ethanol, and the structural color response times increase with increasing ethanol concentration. This design uses the selective infiltration, hydrogen bonding and capillary action of solvent to realize the spectral diversity of reflectance. Owing to the high polarity and hydrogen bonding ability of carboxyl groups, water molecules are adsorbed easily by the poly(acrylic acid) gel. Subsequently, the encrypted information is decrypted due to the redshift of the structural color. Because of its lower polarity and hydrogen bonding ability relative to water, ethanol can impede the absorption of solvent by gel. Therefore, the ethanol concentration can be identified based on the structural color response time. Furthermore, reliable information decryption methods make Poly(ether sulfone)/Poly(acrylic acid) inverse opal photonic crystals potentially uesful as trusted encryption devices.

Abstract:A process is described for the fabrication of opal-like thin films by controlling a solid - liquid interface moving at an inclined glass substrate. A special airflow is adopted to control solvent evaporation. SEM images and photographs show that the films, composed of polystyrene spheres, are coloured, flat, uniform, packed multilayers, and are well arrayed over a large scale. The ordered domains range in size from 10 to 15 mu m. The spheres in suspension crystallized, caused by an intense interaction between the spheres on the boundary between the suspension and the substrate. A wide photonic band gap is observed in the normal-incidence transmission spectra of the films fabricated by this method. Cracks and defects in the films are examined and discussed.

Abstract:Responsive photonic crystal hydrogel sensors are renowned for their colorimetric sensing ability and can be utilized in many fields such as medical diagnosis, environmental detection, food safety, and industrial production. Previously, our group invented responsive photonic nanochains (RPNCs), which improve the response speed of photonic crystal hydrogel sensors by at least 2 to 3 orders of magnitude. However, RPNCs are dispersed in a liquid medium, which needs a magnetic field to orient them for the generation of structural colors. In addition, during repeated use, the process of cleaning and redispersing can cause entanglement, breakage, and a loss of RPNCs, resulting in poor stability. Moreover, when mixing with the samples in liquid, the RPNCs may lead to the contamination of the samples being tested. In this paper, we incorporate one-dimensional oriented RPNCs with agarose gel film to prepare heterogeneous hydrogel films. Thanks to the non-responsive and porous nature of the agarose gel, the protons diffuse freely in the gel, which facilitates the fast response of the RPNCs. Furthermore, the "frozen" RPNCs in agarose gel not only enable the display of structural colors without the need for a magnet but also improve the cycling stability and long-term durability of the sensor, and will not contaminate the samples. This work paves the way for the application of photonic crystal sensors.

Abstract:Direct and rapid printing and surface patterning of hydrogel thin films are of great significance in the construction of advanced electronic devices, yet they are greatly underdeveloped due to the intrinsic contradiction between mechanical strength and self-healability as well as recyclability. Here, we present a universal and rapid slipping-directed route with a newly developed water-soluble star polymer hydrogel for direct and reproducible printing and patterning of freestanding functional thin films with precisely controlled thicknesses, components, and surface structures on a large scale. The resulting thin films combine the features of large transmittance (93%), tough mechanical strength (114 MPa), multiresponsive self-healability, recyclability, and remarkable multifunctionality. With the unique humidity-sensitive properties as motivation, diverse humidity-sensing devices including an actuating switch, a supercapacitive sensor, and a noncontact electronic skin are facilely constructed through the humidity-induced transverse, longitudinal, and patterning assembly techniques, respectively. The method presented here is universal and efficient in the fabrication and assembly of thin films with controlled configuration and functionality for advanced flexible electronics.
Tuning Strain Sensor Performance via Programmed Thin-Film Crack Evolution

Abstract:Stretchable strain sensors with well-controlled sensitivity and stretchability are crucial for applications ranging from large deformation monitoring to subtle vibration detection. Here, based on single-metal material on the elastomer and one-pot evaporation fabrication method, we realize controlled strain sensor performance via a novel programable cracking technology. Specifically, through elastomeric substrate surface chemistry modification, the microcrack generation and morphology evolution of the strain sensing layer is controlled. This process allows for fine tunability of the cracked film morphology, resulting in strain sensing devices with a sensitivity gauge factor of over 10 000 and stretchability up to 100%. Devices with a frequency response up to 5.2 Hz and stability higher than 1000 cycles are reported. Abstract:The advent of nanotechnology has motivated a revolution in the development of miniaturized sensors. Such sensors can be used for radiation detection, temperature sensing, radio-frequency sensing, strain sensing, and more. At the nanoscale, integrating the materials of interest into sensing platforms can be a common issue. One promising platform is photonic crystal fibers, which can draw in optically sensitive nanoparticles or have its optical properties changed by specialized nanomaterials. However, testing these sensors at scale is limited by the the need for specialized equipment to integrate these photonic crystal fibers into optical fiber systems. Having a method to enable rapid prototyping of new nanoparticle-based sensors in photonic crystal fibers would open up the field to a wider range of laboratories that could not have initially studied these materials in such a way before. This manuscript discusses the improved processes for cleaving, drawing, and rapidly integrating nanoparticle-based photonic crystal fibers into optical system setups. The method proposed in this manuscript achieved the following innovations: cleaving at a quality needed for nanoparticle integration could be done more reliably (≈100% acceptable cleaving yield versus ≈50% conventionally), nanoparticles could be drawn at scale through photonic crystal fibers in a safe manner (a method to draw multiple photonic crystal fibers at scale versus one fiber at a time), and the new photonic crystal fiber mount was able to be finely adjusted when increasing the optical coupling before inserting it into an optical system (before, expensive fusion splicing was the only other method).

Rapid Spread, Slow Evaporation: a Long-Lasting Water Film on Hydrogel Nanowire Arrays for Continuous Wearables

Abstract:A successful flexible wearable not only has to fulfill its function, but also has to ensure long-term wettability and comfort during wearing. In biological systems, tears spread rapidly across the cornea to ensure clear imaging while slowly evaporating to maintain moisture in the eyes. This dynamic behavior of 'rapid spread, slow evaporation' ensures durative humidity and comfort, which can provide design guidelines for continuous wearable devices. However, realizing this dynamic process in vitro remains a challenge. Herein, inspired by a healthy ocular surface, we biomimetically construct a hybrid surface featuring mucin-like hydrophilic layer@hydrogel nanowire arrays (HL@HNWs). A droplet (2 mu L) rapidly spreads into a thin film, stabilizing for similar to 10 minutes, whereas the contrast sample rapidly ruptures and dewets within 1 minute. We demonstrate that enhancing the proportion of hydrated water (HW), which includes intermediate water (IW) and bound water (BW), and introducing the capillary resistance of the nanowire arrays could synergistically stabilize the water film and improve the wettability. Hydrogel-based nanowire array contact lenses can ensure wettability during continuous wear, and a stable water film can substantially improve comfort and provide superior visual quality. Strong hydrated water and the capillary resistance of nanowire arrays could synergistically stabilize the water film. Obtained wearable contact lenses can improve comfort and provide superior visual quality and long-term moisturization.
