Abstract:Designing and stereoselectively constructing chiral mechanically interlocked molecules (MIMs) is a goal that many chemists are pursuing due to their potential in the development of functional molecular machines involved in catalysis, sensing, and chiroptical switching. However, the synthesis of enantio-pure supramolecular entities with crystallographic structures remains challenging. Herein, the stereoselective self-assembly of chiral metalla[2]catenanes interlocked by two D-shaped macrocycles was realized by combining long binuclear half-sandwich organometallic Cp*RhIII (Cp* = eta 5-pentamethylcyclo-pentadienyl) clip and ditopic monodentate ligand incorporating L-leucine residues. The resulting metalla[2]catenane displayed unique co-conformational mechanical helical chirality characteristics arising from the chirality transfer of the chiral ligand. Furthermore, decreasing the length of the binuclear Cp*RhIII clip and adjusting the steric hindrance of the amino-acid side chains (L-alanine and L-phenylala-nine) in the ligands resulted in two lemniscular macrocycles with left-handed (M)-twisted conformational chirality. To the best of our knowledge, the synthesized macrocycles are the first family of homochiral abnormal lemniscate-shaped organometallic macrocycles featuring figure-eight geometries. Metalla[2]catenanes and macrocycles with opposite chirality were also generated by employing corresponding D-amino acid ligands, as evidenced by single-crystal X-ray diffraction, nuclear magnetic resonance, mass, and circular dichroism spectroscopies. Our present study demonstrates that homochiral MIMs can be accessed readily using amino acid-containing ligands through rational molecular design.

Abstract:Herein, we have successfully achieved the stereoselective synthesis of two chiral radial [5]catenanes in a single step through the self-assembly of bidentate ligands containing l-alanine residues and binuclear half-sandwich organometallic rhodium(III)/iridium(III) clips. Remarkably, these two chiral radial [5]catenanes exhibit complex stereochemical structures as revealed by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. The eight binuclear units and eight bidentate ligands in their solid-state structures all exhibit a single planar chirality, and the interlocking between molecular macrocycles exhibits a single co-conformational mechanical helical chirality. This indicates that the introduction of the point chirality in the ligands enables the efficient stereoselective construction of mechanically interlocked molecules. Furthermore, by using ligands containing d-alanine residues, radial [5]catenanes with the opposite planar chirality and opposite co-conformational mechanical helical chirality have also been obtained.

Abstract:We report on the low-temperature scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) measurements of the self-assembly of nonplanar 10,10'-dibromo-9,9'-bianthryl (DBBA) molecules on Ag(111) combined with density functional theory (DFT) calculations. DBBA molecules have two enantiomorphous adsorption configurations, from which more chiral structures can be formed. At a low coverage [0.4 monolayer (ML)], DBBA forms racemic netlike islands consisting of molecular chains along ⟨1 2 3̅⟩Ag. Moreover, the gliding between the molecular chains gives rise to chiral windmill-like patterns in the islands. At 0.8 ML, DBBA forms a racemic row phase and a homochiral hexamer phase. The molecular appearance difference between the two coexisted phases and the DFT calculated molecular adsorption configuration reveal a decrease in the molecular dihedral angle of DBBA, which implies an enhancement in the intermolecular interactions via CH···π and halogen bonds. The transition from a racemic packing mode to a homochiral one suggests that the suitability of steric configurations is dominant in the close-packing mode under enhanced intermolecular interactions.

Abstract:A left-handed homochiral [CuCl2(L1)](n) (1) and two solvated heterochiral [CuCl2(L1)](n)center dot n(H2O) (2) and [CuBr2(L1)](n)center dot n(MeOH) (3) one-dimensional helical copper(II) coordination polymers have been self-assembled from Cu(II) with an achiral functionalized 1,2,3-triazole (L1) (L1 = 1-(2-picolyl)-4-(1-(methoxyl)-benzotriazole)-1H-1,2,3-triazole) under different conditions. They have been characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis. Complexes 2 and 3 have been further analyzed by powder XRD, thermogravimetric analysis, and electron paramagnetic resonance. Different conformational twists of the ligand skeleton result in different chiral organizations - a large torsional twist (C-C-O-N) of similar to 59.4 degrees in 1 results in a large screw-pitch of similar to 45.2 angstrom, whereas a small twist of similar to 6.2 degrees in 2 and 6.7 degrees in 3 results in a short screw-pitch of similar to 7.6 and 8.1 angstrom, respectively. The effect of the lattice solvates (H2O and MeOH) on the change of helical structures has also been described.

Abstract:Reaction of bis(amide) sodium Na-2[(1R,2R)-(-)-1,2-(NSiMe3)(2)-C6H10] (Na-2[L-1]) with Ti(OiPr)(2)Cl-2 in different conditions gave mixed-ligand complexes [Ti(OiPr)G][L-1] (1) or [Ti(OiPr)(2)Cl](2)[L-1] (2); 2 is a dinuclear titanium example in which Ti atoms are bridged by nitrogen and oxygen atoms simultaneously forming a distorted rhombic core. Reaction of the amine-amidinate ligand (1R,2R)-(-)-1-Li[NC(Ph)N(SiMe3)]-2-(NHSiMe3)-C6H10(Li[L-2]) or rarely linked bis(amidinate) ligand Li-2[(1R,2R)-(-)-1,2-{NC(Ph)N(SiMe3)}(2)-C6H10](Li-2[L-3]) with ZrCl4 yielded the unbridged and bridged bis(amidinate) complexes ZrCl2[L-2](2) (3) and [ZrCl2(THF)][L-3] (4), respectively; Moreover, the reaction of (1R,2R)-(-)-1-Li[NC(Ph)N(SiMe3)]-2-Li(NSiMe3)C6H10(Li-2[L-2]) with Ti(OiPr)(2)Cl-2 gave a new type of tridentate amido-amidinate product [Ti(OiPr)(2)][L-2] (6), which is a distinct model compared to [Ti(OiPr)(2)Cl][L-2] (5) yielded from Li[L2]. Abstract:Bicontinuous cubic liquid crystalline (LC) phases are of particular interest due their possible applications in electronic devices and special supramolecular chirality. Herein, we report the design and synthesis of first examples of achiral bent‐shaped polycatenar dimers, capable of displaying mirror symmetry breaking in their cubic and isotropic liquid phases. The molecules have a taper‐shaped 3,4,5‐trialkoxybenzoate segment connected to rod‐like building unit terminated with one terminal flexible chain. The two segments were connected using an aliphatic spacer with seven methylene units to induce bending of the whole structure. Investigated by the small‐angle X‐ray scattering (SAXS), a double network achiral cubic phase Cub/Ia3 d, which is a meso‐structure, and a chiral triple network cubic phase Cub/I23[*] are formed. The molecules self‐assemble into molecular helices and progress along the networks. Interestingly, different linking groups such as ester or azo linkages and core fluorination lead to distinct local helicity, resulting in an alkyl chain volume dependent phase transition sequence Ia3d(L)‐I23*‐Ia3d(S). The re‐entry of Iad phase and loss of supramolecular chirality is attributed to the delicate influence of steric effect at the mono‐substitute end and interhelix interaction. Besides, aromatic core fluorination was proved to be a successful tool stabilizing the cubic phases in these dimers.

Abstract:In situ generated N-heterocyclic carbene salt derivative Na-2(L) of 1,3-bis(4,6-di-tert-butyl-2-hydroxybenzyl)imidazolium bromide, [H-3(L)]Br, reacted with 1 equiv. of TiBr4 at -78 degrees C to give a titanium complex of the composition [(L)TiBr2(thf)] (1), while the reaction in a 2:1 ratio under the same conditions afforded bisligand titanium complex [(L)(2)Ti] (2). Two oxygen-bridged titanium dimers, {[(L)TiBr2(mu-O)} (4) and {[(L)Ti(mu-O-2) (5), were obtained by control of hydrolysis of 1 and [(L)Ti(CH2Ph)(2)] (3) in tetrahydrofuran and diethyl ether. The molecular structures of 2, 4, and 5 have been confirmed by X-ray single-crystal analysis. Abstract:ConspectusHierarchical helicates are formed by noncovalent connection of two or more monomeric metal complex units, e.g., by bridging metal cations. A unique kind of hierarchical helicate is obtained from 3-carbonyl substituted catechol ligands with titanium(IV) ions in the presence of lithium cations. This kind of supramolecular complex shows in solution a "monomer-dimer" equilibrium. There are different possibilities (solvent, countercation, substituents at carbonyl unit, etc.) to shift this equilibrium to either the monomer or the dimer side. Thus, the lithium-bridged catecholate-based hierarchical helicates resemble a molecular switch. In this Account, different aspects are discussed of how this unique behavior of the dimeric titanium catecholates can be used for application.Thorough investigation of the energetics of the monomer-dimer equilibrium leads to a deeper understanding of the thermodynamic and kinetic effects of the dimerization (or dissociation) process. In this context, even weak interaction of substituents in the periphery of the complexes can be observed. Hereby on the one hand, solvent effects have an important influence and can be easily evaluated. The thorough understanding of the behavior of the monomer-dimer equilibrium allows one to develop some novel applications. In this respect, the use of the hierarchical helicate-based switch as a platform for reaction control and catalysis is described. Decent enantioselectivities up to ee = 58% can be found in Diels-Alder reactions in the periphery of the dimers, while switching to the monomer as a reaction platform still allows the cycloaddition reaction but turns the selectivity off. Additionally, it is described that catalytically important units can be introduced and hydrogenation reactions as well as Michael-type reactions are catalyzed at the helicates.Covalent connection of two catechol ester units leads to classical helicates. Depending on the alkaline metal cation, those can be switched from a compressed to an expanded form or vice versa. Hereby the monomer-dimer equilibrium is transformed into a structural switch. The switching process can be initiated by removal or addition of lithium cations (e.g., by addition of [2.1.1]cryptand). Alternative switching possibilities are based in the case of glycol bridged helicates on cation translocation isomerism and with thioester derivatives it occurs spontaneously in DMSO. Introduction of chiral tethers results in a three state switch allowing expansion/compression as well as switching of the helicity.

Abstract:Four new polymers, namely [Ni(-tsgluO)(2,4′-bipy)2(H2O)2]n·5nH2O (1), [Co(-tsgluO)(2,4′-bipy)2(H2O)2]n·5nH2O (2), [Ni(-tsgluO)(4,4′-bipy)]n·0.5nH2O (3), and [Co(-tsgluO)(4,4′-bipy)]n·0.5nH2O (4), where tsgluO2−=(+)-N-p-tolylsulfonyl-l-glutamate dianion, 2,4′-bipy=2,4′-bipyridine, and 4,4′-bipy=4,4'-bipyridine, have been prepared and structurally characterized. Compounds 1 and 2 are isostructural and mononuclear, and crystallize in the acentric monoclinic space group Cc, forming 1D chain structures. Compound 3 is also mononuclear, but crystallizes in the chiral space group P21, forming a homochiral 2D architecture. In contrast to the other complexes, compound 4 crystallizes in the space group P−1 and is composed of binuclear [Co2O6N2]n4− units, which give rise to a 2D bilayer framework. Moreover, compounds 1, 2, and 4 self-assemble to form 3D supramolecular structures through π–π stacking and hydrogen-bonding interactions, while compound 3 is further hydrogen-bonded to form 3D frameworks. We have demonstrated the influence of the central metal and bipyridine ligands on the framework chirality of the coordination complexes.

Furthermore, a chiral ligand (L2S) with carbon stereocenters at both termini of the bis-bis(urea) backbone was designed and assembled with phosphate to form the enantio-pure triple helicate or tetrahedron. Abstract:Chiral twisted prisms, cuboids, and capped cages are constructed through the full utilization of flexible tartrate ligands. The self‐assembly of different components in varying ratios, coupled with the use of ligands that can accommodate a range of coordination numbers, has enabled the emergence of a rich array of coordination patterns. Homochiral triangular prisms, cuboid cages, and capped polyhedral cages are successfully synthesized via coordination‐driven self‐assembly. Typical tartrate ligands demonstrated notable torsional flexibility and variable coordination numbers, allowing for diverse coordination patterns, including saturated chelation and terminal mono‐coordination with half‐sandwich rhodium and iridium fragments. The ligand lengths, molar ratios, and metal vertices are meticulously designed and fine‐tuned to yield chiral cages with entirely distinct architectures. Tartrate ligand exhibits abundant hydrogen bonding interactions and chiral induction capabilities, these supramolecular assemblies are characterized by single‐crystal X‐ray diffraction, nuclear magnetic resonance, and circular dichroism spectroscopy. An efficient method is developed for constructing chiral structurally versatile cage‐like entities, facilitating self‐assembly in complicated multi‐component systems.

On the synthesis and characterization of two different titanium-based supramolecular structures of identical stoichiometry

Abstract:Self-assembled supramolecular coordination complexes can take on a wide range of three-dimensional architectures with varying ratios of metal-to-ligand. Control over which architecture will be adopted can be difficult to maintain, as many may form from the starting materials and conditions present. Characterizing the resulting architectures formed can be challenging, in particular when discerning between lower or higher ordered structures of identical stoichiometry. Here we report the synthesis and characterization of a Ti 2 L 3 football-like or pill-shaped capsule, unexpectedly formed from attempts to synthesize variations on a Ti 4 L 6 tetrahedron. The two anionic cores are formed from identical stoichiometric ratios of organic linkers and metal nodes. The high symmetry of the structures, and identical m/z ratios, posed characterization challenges. Crystallization was the only method that allowed for precise structural determination. In the presence of appropriate counter ion guests, the Ti 2 L 3 capsule converts into the Ti 4 L 6 tetrahedron at elevated temperatures over several days. Graphical

Homochiral design of titanium-organic cage for circularly polarized luminescence-based molecular detection

Abstract:Post-assembly modification strategy is used as an effective approach to improve the functional applications of metal-organic cages. The active vertex of the racemic tetrahedral Ti 4 L 6 (L = embonate) cages traps four chiral diamine chelated dinuclear silver ions, obtaining homochiral cages which exhibit helical perovskite stacks. Such a surface modification engineering enables the structural precise cages presenting homochirality and circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) response, further achieving enantioselective recognition toward chiral Camphorquinone molecules and displaying enhanced temperature-dependent effects of CPL output.

Abstract:Beyond the common supramolecular helical polymers in solutions, controlling single-crystal helical self-assembly with precisely defined chirality and architectures has been challenging. Here, we report that simply merging static homochiral amino acids with dynamic chiral disulfides can produce a class of building blocks featuring supramolecular helical single-crystal self-assembly with unusual stereodivergency. Analysis of 20 single-crystal structures of 1,2-dithiolanes gives an atom-precision understanding of the chirality transfer from the molecular to supramolecular level, featuring homochiral and heterochiral helical supramolecular self-assembly in the solid state. The underlying structure-assembly relationship reveals that the synergistic interplay of intermolecular H-bonds and the 1,2-dithiolane ring with adaptive chirality plays a key role in determining the assembly pathway, also involving the effects of residue groups, substituents, molecular stacking, and solvents. The confinement effect in the solid state can stabilize the dynamic stereochemistry of disulfide bonds and selectively result in specific conformers that can minimize the energy of global supramolecular systems. We envision that these results represent a starting point to use dynamic chiral disulfide as a functional entity in supramolecular chemistry and may inspire a new class of supramolecular helical polymers with dynamic functions.

Abstract:The chirality of metal-organic cages holds enormous potential for novel applications in diverse fields, while it is relatively rare to employ such asymmetric units for the construction of noncentrosymmetric materials. Herein, by self-assembling the 4,4',4''-nitrilotribenzoic acid (H3NBA) with bis(cyclopentadienyl)-zirconium dichloride (Cp2ZrCl2, Cp = η5-C5H5) in different solvent conditions, we have obtained three hierarchical packing modes of metallo-tetrahedra with distinct spatial symmetry groups (designated as Zr-α, Zr-β, and Zr-γ). Among them, Zr-α employs a simple cubic arrangement and is a common centrosymmetric superstructure, which consists of a pair of equimolar metallo-tetrahedra enantiomers in its unit cell. While Zr-β results in conglomerates with spontaneous resolution without using any resolving agents, giving rise to two enantiopure entities separately (Zr-β-P, Zr-β-M). More importantly, Zr-γ breaks the inversion center of symmetry and crystallizes into a racemic yet non-centrosymmetric superstructure with face-centered cubic packing mode. Based on the non-centrosymmetric nature, the hierarchical superstructure Zr-γ displayed good second harmonic generation activities. This work presents a successful instance wherein the reaction solvent induces the modulation of intermolecular packing mode to afford non-centrosymmetric solid materials, which can greatly promote the development of noncentrosymmetric solid (NCS) materials.

Abstract:Incorporating chiral elements in host-guest systems currently focuses much attention, which results from the major impact such structures may have onto a wide range of applications, from pharmaceuticals to materials science and beyond. Moreover, the development of multi-responsive and -functional systems is highly desirable since they offer numerous benefits. In this context, we describe herein the construction of a metal-driven self-assembled cage that associates a chiral truxene-based ligand and a bis-ruthenium complex. The maximum separation between both facing chiral units in the assembly is fixed by the intermetallic distance within the lateral bis-ruthenium complex (8.4 Å). The resulting chiral cavity was shown to encapsulate polyaromatic guest molecules, but also to afford a chiral triply interlocked [2]catenane structure. The formation of the latter occurs at high concentration, while its disassembly could be achieved by addition of a planar achiral molecule. Interestingly the latter exhibits induced circular dichroism signature when trapped within the chiral cavity, demonstrating the cage ability for inducing supramolecular chirogenesis.

Abstract:Homochiral metal-organic macrocyclic complexes are of great significance owing to their chirality and well-defined internal cavities that potentially have the ability to mimic complicated biological processes. Here we report a novel metal/anion-coordination co-driven strategy for the formation of nanoscale supramolecular metallocycles with unique topology, large size, and desired chirality. The enantiomeric Janus-type metallocyclic strips are assembled based on the synergistic coordination of sulfate anions and CoII ions to a bifunctional achiral ligand combining the o-phenylene-(bis)urea anion-chelating and 8-hydroxyquinoline metal-coordinating sites. The inherent chirality arises from two types of helical chiralities (triply twisted Möbius ring and circular helicate), which is observed for the first time for metal-organic complex systems. Notably, spontaneous chiral resolution by conglomerate crystallization into a pair of enantiomers (P- or M-Co9) is realized, which is attributed to the multiple weak intermolecular interactions facilitating the hierarchically helical superstructure.

Abstract:The bottom-up fabrication of surface hierarchical nanostructures is of great importance for the development of molecular nanostructures for chiral molecular recognition and enantioselective catalysis. Herein, we report the construction of a series of 2D chiral hierarchical structures by trinary molecular self-assembly with copper phthalocyanine (CuPc), 2,3,7,8,12,13-hexahexyloxy-truxenone (TrO23), and 1,3,5-tris(10-carboxydecyloxy) benzene (TCDB). A series of flower-like chiral hierarchical molecular architectures with increased generations are formed, and the details of these structures are investigated by high resolution scanning tunneling microscopy (STM). The flower-like hierarchical molecular architectures could be described by a unified configuration in which the lobe of each architecture is composed of a different number of triangular shape building units (TBUs). The off-axis edge-to-edge packing of TBUs confers the organizational chirality of the hierarchical assemblies. On the other hand, the TBUs can tile the surface in a vertex-sharing configuration, resulting in the expansion of chiral unit cells, which thereby further modulate the periodicity of chiral voids in the multilevel hierarchical assemblies. The formation of desired hierarchical structures could be controlled through tuning the molar ratio of each component in liquid phase. The results are significant for the design and fabrication of multicomponent chiral hierarchical molecular nanostructures.
