Abstract:C. G. Jung’s openness to the transcendent nature of the psyche has appealed to those seeking an alternative to the more ego-centered approach promoted by traditional Freudian psychoanalysis. Yet despite the significant philosophical implications of Jung’s ideas, he always emphasized their pragmatic and clinical nature: helping grapple with neuroses/psychoses and sundry symptoms borne of mental conflict. While abstract concepts from analytical psychology provide a useful schema to make sense of suffering, such theoretical conceptualizations can, when dogmatically misapplied in the consulting room, permit both analyst and patient to by-pass the concrete existential reality of the analytic relationship. The ability and willingness to be fully present to the angst of both patient and “self-as-therapist” is perhaps the most essential aspect of existential psychotherapy. In this article, the authors propose a concordance between existentialist and Jungian approaches that positions the work of analysis as a creative engagement with patients’ subjective experiences without avoiding or diminishing the here-and-now experience of the therapeutic encounter, arguing that such cross-fertilization could offer an integrative form of treatment more faithful to the unique existence of each individual and analytic pair than either approach on its own.

Abstract:Existential therapy and Jungian analysis share much in common. The early Jung, with his self-professed scientific study and “empirical” description of the human psyche focused strictly on “observed facts,” fancied himself a phenomenologist of sorts, loosely using a philosophical method first described in detail by Edmund Husserl (1859-1938) at the start of the 20th century. In this article, the author, a clinical and forensic psychologist, compares the contemporary practices of existential therapy and Jungian analysis, citing essential similarities and differences, and proposing and describing the complementary synthesis of these two penetrating and potent theoretical orientations in a reimagined form of therapy he calls “existential depth psychology.” He argues here that contemporary existential therapy’s reflexively broad dismissal of depth psychology and its profound clinical wisdom diminishes it immensely. And vice versa. Given the inherent bias against such sagacious, depth-oriented counseling and psychotherapy in today’s increasingly vapid mental health marketplace, Jungian analysis and existential therapy, despite, or really due to, their differences, desperately need each other to become more balanced, whole, efficacious, relevant, and viable humanistic treatment approaches.

Abstract:A recent meta-analysis revealed that mental health and baseline psychological impairment affect the quality of life and outcomes in different chronic conditions. Implementing mental health care in physical care services is still insufficient. Thus, interdisciplinary communication across treatment providers is essential. The standardized language provided by the diagnostic statistical manual favors a clear conceptualization. However, this approach might not focus on the individual, as thinking in categories might impede recognizing the continuum from healthy to diseased. Psychoanalytic theory is concerned with an individual's unconscious conflictual wishes and motivations, manifested through enactments like psychic symptoms or (maladaptive) behavior with long-term consequences if not considered. Such modifiable internal and external factors often are inadequately treated. However, together with the physical chronic condition constraints, these factors determine degrees of freedom for a self-determined existence. The effect of therapeutic interventions, and especially therapy adherence, relies on a solid therapeutic relationship. Outcome and process research still investigates the mechanism of change in psychotherapeutic treatments with psychanalysis's focus on attachment problems. This article examines existing knowledge about the mechanism of change in psychoanalysis under the consideration of current trends emerging from psychotherapy research. A clinical example is discussed. Additionally, further directions for research are given. The theoretical frame in psychoanalytic therapies is the affect-cognitive interface. Subliminal affect-perception is enabled via awareness of subjective meanings in oneself and the other; shaping this awareness is the main intervention point. The interactional ingredients, the patient's inherent bioenvironmental history meeting the clinician, are relevant variables. Several intrinsic, subliminal parameters relevant for changing behavior are observed. Therapeutic interventions aim at supporting the internalization of the superego's functions and at making this ability available in moments of self-reflection. By supporting mentalization abilities, a better understanding of oneself and higher self-regulation (including emotional regulation) can lead to better judgments (application of formal logic and abstract thinking). Thus, this facilitates enduring behavior change with presumably positive effects on mental and physical health.

Abstract:To understand the affect-laden psychological processes of patients in a fully informed way, analysts must be able to tolerate a regression in which their unconscious or primary-process modes of functioning are given full sway. With the aid of impressions acquired in this way, cognitive functions in the analytic task are provided with a kind of authenticity not otherwise achievable. There are potential problems that can interfere with the analyst's functioning in the desired manner, and an awareness of these problems is essential. Basic issues of theory and technique that are involved are considered herein.

Abstract:Abstract In our dialogues over the nature of archetypes, essence, psyche, and world, I further respond to Erik Goodwyn’s recent foray into establishing an ontological position that not only answers to the mind-body problem, but further locates the source of Psyche on a cosmic plane. His impressive attempt to launch a neo-Jungian metaphysics is based on the principle of cosmic panpsychism that bridges both the internal parameters of archetypal process and their emergence in consciousness and the external world conditioned by a psychic universe. Here I explore the ontology of experience, mind, matter, metaphysical realism, and critique Goodwyn’s turn to Neoplatonism. The result is a potentially compatible theory of mind and reality that grounds archetypal theory in onto-phenomenology, metaphysics, and bioscience, hence facilitating new directions in analytical psychology.

Abstract:The paraneoplastic variant of granuloma annulare (GA) is a rare cutaneous manifestation of underlying malignancy that is most commonly associated with systemic lymphoma. We report an interesting case of a patient with gastrointestinal stornal tumour (GIST) of the stomach presenting with extensive generalized GA. GIST was diagnosed 2 months after the diagnosis of GA. Resolution of the GA was seen 1 month after surgical excision of GIST. The close correlation of the clinical courses of these two rare diseases suggests that their coexistence was more than a coincidental finding. This case highlights the importance of excluding paraneoplastic GA, especially in cases where the skin manifestations are extensive and resistant to treatment.

Emotion Regulation, Relationship and Therapeutic Change in Analytical Psychology and Contemporary Psychodynamic Approaches

Abstract:All contemporary psychotherapies agree that (failing) emotion regulation is central to psychological disorders and that psychotherapy is about improving emotion regulation. In his research on the "emotion-laden" complex Jung put an emphasis on the role of failing emotion regulation in contributing to psychological disorders as well as to change in the process of psychotherapy, but he left this field of research and took a very different direction in favour of his archetype concept. Psychodynamic approaches generally argue that changes in emotion regulation are accomplished through corrective emotional experiences in the therapeutic relationship. Insights from affective neurosciences and attachment research have had a major influence on how the therapeutic relationship is constructed in contemporary psychodynamic approaches. There is a lack of similar developments in analytical psychology, which leads to substantial differences between the models of Jungian psychotherapy in contrast to other contemporary psychodynamic approaches. The implications of these differences for the practice of psychotherapy and especially the role of the therapeutic relationship are pointed out.

Abstract:The following sequences have been submitted to the Nomenclature Committee since the March 2012 nomenclature update and, following agreed policy, have been assigned official allele designations (Marsh et al., 2010). Full details of all sequences will be published in a forthcoming report. Below are listed the newly assigned sequences (Table 1) and confirmations of previously reported sequences (Table 2). The accession number of each sequence is given and these can be used to retrieve the sequence files from the EMBL, GenBank or DDBJ data libraries. Although accession numbers have been assigned by the data libraries, and most sequences are already available, there is still the possibility that an author may not yet have allowed the sequence to be released; in such a case, you will have to contact the submitting author directly. Additional information pertaining to new sequences is often included in the publications describing these alleles; a listing of recent publications that describe new HLA sequences is given in Table 3. All new and confirmatory sequences should now be submitted directly to the WHO Nomenclature Committee for Factors of the HLA System via the IMGT/ HLA Database using the sequence submission tool provided (Robinson et al., 2000). The IMGT/HLA Database may be accessed via the World Wide Web at: www.ebi.ac.uk/imgt/hla.

Abstract:Culture &Psychology, Ahead of Print. Attempts to make Carl Gustav Jung's theory of archetypes scientifically credible tend to invoke biology and evolution theory. These convey faith in the power of science (scientism), taken here as a cultural metanarrative. The essay provides a critical appraisal of both biology-oriented and culture-oriented trends in Jungian studies, and steers the conceptualization of archetypes towards issues of embodied subjectivity and narrativity. Thematic parallels between transhumanism, on the one side, and the rebirth archetype as described by Jung, on the other, serve as a case in point.

Abstract:In this work, three-dimensional (3D) film-based proton beam measurements were used for the first time to verify the patient-specific radiation dose distribution, beam range and compensator shape. Three passively scattered proton beams and one uniform scanning proton beam were directed onto an acrylic phantom with inserted Gafchromic EBT films. The average gamma index for a comparison of the dose distributions was less than one for 97.2 % of all pixels from the passively scattered proton beams and 98.1 % of all pixels for the uniform scanning proton beams, with a 3 % dose and a 3 mm distance-to-dose agreement tolerance limit. The results also showed that the average percentage of points within the acceptance criteria for proton beam ranges was 94.6 % for the passively scattered proton beams. Both the dose distribution and the proton beam range determined by the 3D EBT film measurement agreed well with the planning system values.

Abstract:Jung and Freud had very different ideas about the nature of analysis. This paper begins by exploring how Jung's gnostic approach, with its goal of individuation, is deeply informed by Buddhist and Taoist principles. His pluralistic, relational model regards truth as subjective and co-constructed with the patient. In contrast, Freud's secular methodology has objective truth as its goal. His classical psychoanalysis is a form of reality testing where the analyst claims to know the painful, singular, objective reality which the patient tries to evade. The theory of aesthetic development (see Piaget 1951, Baldwin 1975, Parsons 1980, Housen 1992, Harris Williams 2010) proposes that artistic appreciation is linked to human development. The paper looks at how the apperception of beauty, related to both truth and meaning, acts as an indicator and facilitator of individuation in the clinical encounter. This is illustrated by a clinical case study. Through empirical research, support is given to the argument (Bollas 1978, Meltzer 1988) that our early experience of the feminine/maternal plays a central role in developing an aesthetic capacity. The experience of the sublime in analysis is examined and portrayed as a means by which aesthetic development may be reignited and narcissistic isolation shattered.

Abstract:With emphasis on healing versus curing, the authors draw from a wide assortment of treatment methods for psychospiritual relief of pain in the terminally ill. These archetypal methods include: life-review therapy; ministry of presence; clinical hypnosis; myths, symbols, rituals, and community; creative therapies. In life-review therapy, the ill person shares his/her life story with the provider much like the healing rituals of the ancient storyteller did in his community. In the ministry of presence, the caregiver focuses on sharing his vulnerability, not his professional skills. Clinical hypnosis emphasizes the naturalness and simplicity of accessing the unconscious along with problem areas of the hypnoclinician. Myths, symbols, rituals, and community serve as nurturing agents in the intervention of pain, while creative therapies such as music, drama, crafts, and art continue to be powerful healing instruments. Archetypal healing produces relief of pain in the caregiver, as well as the ill, with emphasis on healing versus curing.

Abstract:Abstract:The phenomena of splitting, projection, and introjection, as seen in the transference and countertransference of a psychoanalytic treatment, may involve a diffusion of personal identity. One or more parts of one person in the analysis—a particular emotion or cognition, sometimes even a mental capacity or function—may become relocated, at least for a while, in the other. Closely similar phenomena occur in everyday contexts. This paper describes these phenomena, with clinical illustrations, and indicates their significance for philosophical work, in particular on personal identity. It argues that personal identity is not as stable and well-bounded as is commonly assumed; and, in particular, that it has to be understood as a process rather than a fixed state, one which takes place at an interpersonal as well as intrapersonal level. It notes that although psychoanalysis has been the object of extensive philosophical study, the phenomena it reveals have been largely neglected by philosophers. The careful study of minds, made possible through the transference relationship in psychoanalysis, could be a laboratory for philosophical research.

Abstract:Addressing the patient's anxieties about the meaning of life and death as integral phenomena of the life cycle is not commonly discussed in the analytic literature. A central dilemma of analytic work is the effort to facilitate change in the life of a suffering patient while also bearing in mind the inescapable human destiny, i.e., the certainty of death. All too often, these factors remain in the background while dealing with other conflicts or misfortunes. The analyst, like the patient, is aware of the brevity of life and is susceptible to the same fate, and thus may feel defenseless, helpless, and limited in what can be offered. This article incorporates the existentialist thinking of Camus on the subject and illuminates it with analytic work with unspoken trauma of a second-generation Holocaust survivor.

Inner-outer couple: anima and animus revisited. New perspectives for a clinical approach in transition

Abstract:The conflicts of the outer couple (crises, separations, divorces) with a high incidence in the rates of depression, reveal the archetypal dysfunction of the relationship between the inner-couple (in-shadow) and the outer-couple (in-crisis). To understand this in depth, a new animated and integrated model of the masculine (animus) and the feminine (anima) is explored. It is a transformational model, in which Jung's contributions are integrated and understood as knowledge in transition. Masculine and feminine cosmogonic principles are personified in the human psyche as anima-animus archetypes-complexes. Their relationship, mediated by the binding eros (cosmogonic-eros), configures the inner-couple-complex. Masculine and feminine are differentiations of the Self energy, present in both men and women. In the conscious dimension, they structure the ego-anima-animus identity; in the dimension of the personal unconscious, the anima-animus complexes; and at the archetypal level, the deep identity of the primordial feminine/masculine. In this initial restructured model, the anima-animus relationship and the description of the dual quaternity as the dynamics of the inner-outer couple interrelation are especially significant. The breadth and comprehensive richness of the new model is illustrated in the clinical/dream material of a patient under analysis, presenting the dynamics: inner couple in shadow - outer couple in crisis.

Abstract:A search for new genes was performed in a 220-kb region around the tumor necrosis factor gene cluster in the human central major histocompatibility complex region using a cDNA hybridization and selection method. In addition to the seven known genes in this region, we identified a new gene that is preferentially expressed in spleen. We also identified two pseudogenes that have high degrees of homology to cytokeratin and cyclophillin, respectively. Expressed sequences for a human homologue of the mouse B144 gene were also found in the current analysis. RT-PCR analysis showed that B144 is expressed in spleen, in thymus, and prominently in the macrophage cell line, U937. We also independently identified the BAT1 gene to be the well-conserved homologue of a previously described rat liver nuclear protein.
