Abstract:While Jung's notion of archetypes has had far-reaching universal appeal and significance, it remains less obvious how these ideas might benefit the analytic patient. In particular, the therapist and/or patient may struggle to hold the tension between the latter's personal neuroses and how transpersonal/archetypal elements inform his/her experience. While Jung strove to develop a treatment that dealt primarily with the archetypal/objective psyche, the personal psyche is arguably the medium through which the archetypes are experienced. I contend that the "discipline" of Jungian analysis evolved from a transposition of Jung's ideas around transpersonal, philosophical and religious themes (borne out of his own self-analysis), into a two-person psychotherapeutic process. Jung provides little description of his clinical encounters and the way in which he conducted his analyses leaving an uncertainty that has likely contributed to the divergence of approaches practised today by analytical psychologists. This article considers the implication of these divergences for contemporary Jungian practice and proposes a way of working in the Jungian spirit that maintains a connection to the symbolic realm while at the same time remaining focused on the complexities of personal and relational dynamics.

Abstract:Since he first proposed it, Carl Jung's "archetype" theory has faced resistance from a pervasive but seldom examined set of underlying Cartesian assumptions embedded in mainstream psychology. This paradigm assumed a physical universe (and hence body) free of psyche that coincided with an essentially disembodied mind largely concerned with abstract symbol manipulation. This situation led archetype theory to remain largely within insulated psychoanalytic circles for decades. Since the 1980s, however, cognitive psychology has increasingly become embodied from a variety of standpoints. This article shows how the results of embodied cognition and spontaneous thought "demystify" many of the attributes Jung described in his archetype theory, making archetype theory not only more comprehensible but clinically applicable. Combining approaches suggests new avenues of inquiry for experimental research and enriches the psychoanalytic perspective.

Abstract:A recent meta-analysis revealed that mental health and baseline psychological impairment affect the quality of life and outcomes in different chronic conditions. Implementing mental health care in physical care services is still insufficient. Thus, interdisciplinary communication across treatment providers is essential. The standardized language provided by the diagnostic statistical manual favors a clear conceptualization. However, this approach might not focus on the individual, as thinking in categories might impede recognizing the continuum from healthy to diseased. Psychoanalytic theory is concerned with an individual's unconscious conflictual wishes and motivations, manifested through enactments like psychic symptoms or (maladaptive) behavior with long-term consequences if not considered. Such modifiable internal and external factors often are inadequately treated. However, together with the physical chronic condition constraints, these factors determine degrees of freedom for a self-determined existence. The effect of therapeutic interventions, and especially therapy adherence, relies on a solid therapeutic relationship. Outcome and process research still investigates the mechanism of change in psychotherapeutic treatments with psychanalysis's focus on attachment problems. This article examines existing knowledge about the mechanism of change in psychoanalysis under the consideration of current trends emerging from psychotherapy research. A clinical example is discussed. Additionally, further directions for research are given. The theoretical frame in psychoanalytic therapies is the affect-cognitive interface. Subliminal affect-perception is enabled via awareness of subjective meanings in oneself and the other; shaping this awareness is the main intervention point. The interactional ingredients, the patient's inherent bioenvironmental history meeting the clinician, are relevant variables. Several intrinsic, subliminal parameters relevant for changing behavior are observed. Therapeutic interventions aim at supporting the internalization of the superego's functions and at making this ability available in moments of self-reflection. By supporting mentalization abilities, a better understanding of oneself and higher self-regulation (including emotional regulation) can lead to better judgments (application of formal logic and abstract thinking). Thus, this facilitates enduring behavior change with presumably positive effects on mental and physical health.

Abstract:Abstract It has often been argued that Jung failed to explain and ground his theory of the archetypes sufficiently, as he remained caught between a psychological, a biological, and a transcendent model of explanation. Inspired by Martin Heidegger’s methodology in Being and Time , this paper will combine an ontological inquiry with a phenomenological analysis of the archetype, to re-interpret it beyond the Jungian psychology and its inherent paradoxes. I will outline a distinction between a psychological appropriation of the archetype, and one that approaches its numinosity as such. According to my argument, this twofold phenomenology of the archetype reveals it to be a form through which we become aware of an ontological difference within our being. The argument will mainly be unfolded through an interpretation of the nymph-maiden in Lucas Cranach’s 16th century painting series Nymph of the Spring , followed by an assessment of our contemporary relation to the same archetype.

Abstract:After more than a century of existence, theoretical development, research, and clinical practice within the psychoanalytic movement have consistently demonstrated that psychoanalysis is not a unitary and autonomous discipline. This has been evidenced by the various ways in which psychoanalytic thought and practice have been informed by and have established a dialogue-more or less fruitful-with related disciplines (neurosciences, developmental psychology, psychotherapy research, attachment theory and research, feminism, philosophy). This dialogue has contributed to a better understanding of the functioning of the human psyche, and therefore of the analytic process, informing clinical interventions. In turn, it has enriched research on psychoanalytic practice and process, underlining the fact that research in psychoanalysis is fundamentally about clinical practice. Since its origins, psychoanalysis has made explicit the work on the patient-analyst relationship as the terrain in which the analytic process unfolds. For its part, research in psychotherapy has demonstrated the relevance of the therapeutic relationship for the good development and outcome of any psychotherapeutic process. This supports the argument that research in clinical psychoanalysis should be research on the impact of the analyst interventions on the analyst-patient relationship. In this context, a central element of what happens in the analytic relationship refers to affect communication and therefore, affect regulation, which is manifested in the transferential and counter-transferential processes, as well as in the therapeutic bond. On the other hand, affective regulation is found at the crossroads of etiopathogenesis, complex personality models and psychopathology, allowing the understanding of human functioning and the staging of these configurations in the patient-analyst relationship. In this way, research on affective regulation in the analytic process is proposed as a path that exemplifies interdisciplinary research and scientific pluralism from which psychoanalysis enriches and progresses as a discipline. The case of a line of research on affective regulation in psychoanalytic psychotherapy is illustrated. The need to resort to other disciplines, as well as the translational value of our research and its clinical usefulness, is discussed.

Abstract:Abstract In our dialogues over the nature of archetypes, essence, psyche, and world, I further respond to Erik Goodwyn’s recent foray into establishing an ontological position that not only answers to the mind-body problem, but further locates the source of Psyche on a cosmic plane. His impressive attempt to launch a neo-Jungian metaphysics is based on the principle of cosmic panpsychism that bridges both the internal parameters of archetypal process and their emergence in consciousness and the external world conditioned by a psychic universe. Here I explore the ontology of experience, mind, matter, metaphysical realism, and critique Goodwyn’s turn to Neoplatonism. The result is a potentially compatible theory of mind and reality that grounds archetypal theory in onto-phenomenology, metaphysics, and bioscience, hence facilitating new directions in analytical psychology.
Inner-outer couple: anima and animus revisited. New perspectives for a clinical approach in transition

Abstract:The conflicts of the outer couple (crises, separations, divorces) with a high incidence in the rates of depression, reveal the archetypal dysfunction of the relationship between the inner-couple (in-shadow) and the outer-couple (in-crisis). To understand this in depth, a new animated and integrated model of the masculine (animus) and the feminine (anima) is explored. It is a transformational model, in which Jung's contributions are integrated and understood as knowledge in transition. Masculine and feminine cosmogonic principles are personified in the human psyche as anima-animus archetypes-complexes. Their relationship, mediated by the binding eros (cosmogonic-eros), configures the inner-couple-complex. Masculine and feminine are differentiations of the Self energy, present in both men and women. In the conscious dimension, they structure the ego-anima-animus identity; in the dimension of the personal unconscious, the anima-animus complexes; and at the archetypal level, the deep identity of the primordial feminine/masculine. In this initial restructured model, the anima-animus relationship and the description of the dual quaternity as the dynamics of the inner-outer couple interrelation are especially significant. The breadth and comprehensive richness of the new model is illustrated in the clinical/dream material of a patient under analysis, presenting the dynamics: inner couple in shadow - outer couple in crisis.
Emotion Regulation, Relationship and Therapeutic Change in Analytical Psychology and Contemporary Psychodynamic Approaches

Abstract:All contemporary psychotherapies agree that (failing) emotion regulation is central to psychological disorders and that psychotherapy is about improving emotion regulation. In his research on the "emotion-laden" complex Jung put an emphasis on the role of failing emotion regulation in contributing to psychological disorders as well as to change in the process of psychotherapy, but he left this field of research and took a very different direction in favour of his archetype concept. Psychodynamic approaches generally argue that changes in emotion regulation are accomplished through corrective emotional experiences in the therapeutic relationship. Insights from affective neurosciences and attachment research have had a major influence on how the therapeutic relationship is constructed in contemporary psychodynamic approaches. There is a lack of similar developments in analytical psychology, which leads to substantial differences between the models of Jungian psychotherapy in contrast to other contemporary psychodynamic approaches. The implications of these differences for the practice of psychotherapy and especially the role of the therapeutic relationship are pointed out.

Abstract:In connection with controversial IJP articles by Stern et al. and Fonagy on the interpretation of the repressed and the recovery of past memories, the author maintains that the affect that is inherent in positive transference is at the heart of therapeutic action. Points of view put forward in the controversy (based on neurobiological knowledge) are related to Freudian metapsychology, as well as to their precursors whose scope was necessarily limited by a lack of access to more recent scientific discoveries. The author demonstrates metapsychological elements of therapeutic action inherent in the intersubjective relationship, especially identification, manifested in introjection and empathy. He describes cognitive development as spontaneously blossoming from the affective nucleus, and he explains the neuroscientific bases of this step forward. The classic (interpretative) psychoanalytic method makes up the cognitive superstructure necessary for the organisation of the mind that has sprung from the affective substructure. As a primary factor in psychic change, interpretation is limited in effectiveness to pathologies arising from the verbal phase, related to explicit memories, with no effect in the pre-verbal phase where implicit memories are to be found. Interpretation--the method used to the exclusion of all others for a century--is only partial; when used in isolation it does not meet the demands of modern broad-spectrum psychoanalysis, as the clinical material presented illustrates.

Abstract:Epigenetic modifications play a pivotal role in the regulation of gene expression and cell function, offering potential markers of disease states and therapeutic outcomes. Recent advancements in neuroscience have spurred interest in studying the epigenetic underpinnings of psychosomatic medicine. This review presents a new perspective on the role of epigenetic regulation in the realms of psychosomatics and psychotherapy. The authors first highlight epigenetic patterns associated with prevalent psychosomatic disorders, including irritable bowel syndrome, fibromyalgia, psoriasis, and lichen planus. For these conditions, psychotherapy serves as a treatment modality and can be conceptualized as an epigenetic intervention that beneficially affects the epigenome as part of the therapeutic process. Focusing on cognitive-behavioral and mindfulness-based therapies, the authors highlight evidence on psychotherapy-associated epigenetic signatures occurring at genes that are involved in stress response, inflammation, neurotransmission, neuroplasticity, and aging. Educating patients about the potential of psychotherapy to affect the epigenome may enhance patient engagement with and adherence to treatment, and psychotherapy-induced epigenetic changes have the potential to promote transgenerational disease prevention, underscoring the far-reaching implications of this therapeutic approach. Challenges persist in epigenetic studies, and this review aimed to catalyze further research in this burgeoning field, with the goal of enhancing patient care.

Abstract:In this paper, we discuss the application of epigenetics to research in child and adolescent mental health. We look back at lessons learned, highlight current developments in the field and point to areas of priority for future research. We also reflect on why epigenetic research on child and adolescent mental health currently lags behind other areas of epigenetic research and what we can do to overcome existing barriers, before concluding with a view on potential translational applications that could emerge as the field matures. Background Epigenetic processes are fast emerging as a promising molecular system in the search for both biomarkers and mechanisms underlying human health and disease risk, including psychopathology. Methods In this review, we discuss the application of epigenetics (specifically DNA methylation) to research in child and adolescent mental health, with a focus on the use of developmentally sensitive datasets, such as prospective, population‐based cohorts. We look back at lessons learned to date, highlight current developments in the field and areas of priority for future research. We also reflect on why epigenetic research on child and adolescent mental health currently lags behind other areas of epigenetic research and what we can do to overcome existing barriers. Results To move the field forward, we advocate for the need of large‐scale, harmonized, collaborative efforts that explicitly account for the time‐varying nature of epigenetic and mental health data across development. Conclusion We conclude with a perspective on what the future may hold in terms of translational applications as more robust signals emerge from epigenetic research on child and adolescent mental health.
An epigenomics approach to individual differences and its translation to neuropsychiatric conditions

Abstract:This review concerns epigenetic mechanisms and their roles in conferring interindividual differences, especially as related to experientially acquired and genetically driven changes in central nervous system (CNS) function. In addition, the review contains commentary regarding the possible ways in which epigenomic changes may contribute to neuropsychiatric conditions and disorders and ways in which epigenotyping might be cross-correlated with clinical phenotyping in the context of precision medicine. The review begins with a basic description of epigenetic marking in the CNS and how these changes are powerful regulators of gene readout. Means for characterizing the individual epigenotype are briefly described, with a focus on DNA cytosine methylation as a readily measurable, stable epigenetic mark. This background enables a discussion of how "epigenotyping" might be integrated along with genotyping and deep phenotyping as a means of implementing advanced precision medicine. Finally, the commentary addresses two exemplars when considering how epigenotype may correlate with and modulate cognitive and behavioral phenotype: schizophrenia and Rett syndrome. These two disorders provide an interesting compare-and-contrast example regarding possible epigenotypic regulation of behavior: whereas Rett syndrome is clearly established as being caused by disruption of the function of an epigenetic "reader" of the DNA cytosine methylome-methyl-CpG-binding protein 2 (MeCP2)-the case for a role for epigenetic mechanisms in schizophrenia is still quite speculative.

Abstract:C. G. Jung’s openness to the transcendent nature of the psyche has appealed to those seeking an alternative to the more ego-centered approach promoted by traditional Freudian psychoanalysis. Yet despite the significant philosophical implications of Jung’s ideas, he always emphasized their pragmatic and clinical nature: helping grapple with neuroses/psychoses and sundry symptoms borne of mental conflict. While abstract concepts from analytical psychology provide a useful schema to make sense of suffering, such theoretical conceptualizations can, when dogmatically misapplied in the consulting room, permit both analyst and patient to by-pass the concrete existential reality of the analytic relationship. The ability and willingness to be fully present to the angst of both patient and “self-as-therapist” is perhaps the most essential aspect of existential psychotherapy. In this article, the authors propose a concordance between existentialist and Jungian approaches that positions the work of analysis as a creative engagement with patients’ subjective experiences without avoiding or diminishing the here-and-now experience of the therapeutic encounter, arguing that such cross-fertilization could offer an integrative form of treatment more faithful to the unique existence of each individual and analytic pair than either approach on its own.

Abstract:The genome (genes), epigenome, and environment work together from the earliest stages of human life to produce a phenotype of human health or disease. Epigenetic modifications, including among other things: DNA methylation, modifications of histones and chromatin structure, as well as functions of noncoding RNA, are coresponsible for specific patterns of gene expression. This refers also to mental disorders, including depressive disorders. Early childhood experiences accompanied by severe stressors (considered a risk factor for depression in adult life) are linked with changes in gene expression. They include genes involved in a response to stress (hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis, HPA), associated with autonomic nervous system hyperactivity and with cortical, and subcortical processes of neuroplasticity and neurodegeneration. These are, among others: gene encoding glucocorticoid receptor, FK506 binding protein 5 gene (FKBP5), gene encoding arginine vasopressin and oestrogen receptor alpha, 5-hydroxy-tryptamine transporter gene (SLC6A4), and gene encoding brain-derived neurotrophic factor. How about personality? Can the experiences unique to every human being, the history of his or her development and gene-environment interactions, through epigenetic mechanisms, shape the features of our personality? Can we pass on these features to future generations? Hence, is the risk of depression inherent in our biological nature? Can we change our destiny?

Clearly, it is the structural approach that underlies both the Freudian primal phantasies and the Jungian archetypes, while taking account at the same time that their approaches are informed by contemporary emergentist theories. Our discussion centred on the divergences in the cases of psychosis and neurosis, on the roles, in turn, of a return to childhood and the play of archaic representations, on the transference and countertransference functions and finally on the need to pay attention to what are deemed synchronous moments in the event.

Abstract:Abstract This paper establishes a specifically Jungian and Post-Jungian contribution to psycho-social studies. It locates the position an analytical psychological approach may occupy within existing debates before turning its attention to developing archetypal thematic analysis ( ATA ) as a psycho-social method that may be employed in qualitative research. Using 2019 as a focal point, the authors argue that an archetypal thematic analysis of texts related to two ‘events’—the release of the 30th anniversary edition DVD of Akira and the announcement of Greta Thunberg as Time magazine’s ‘person of the year’—supports the assertion that the archetype of the child has been constellated. This paper proposes that a Jungian hermeneutic may usefully be mobilised to bring structure to a dataset, and to deepen the researcher’s interpretation of the data. Utilising Jung’s theory of synchronicity, and extending Main’s (2006) argument for a synchronistic approach to a reading of contemporary events, where appropriate, the authors provide an interpretation of the data’s possible meaning.

Abstract:The development of mental disorders constitutes a complex phenomenon driven by unique social, psychological and biological factors such as genetics and epigenetics, throughout an individual's life course. Both environmental and genetic factors have an impact on mental health phenotypes and act simultaneously to induce changes in brain and behavior. Here, we describe and critically evaluate the current literature on gene-environment interactions and epigenetics on mental health by highlighting recent human and animal studies. We furthermore review some of the main ethical and social implications concerning gene-environment interactions and epigenetics and provide explanations and suggestions on how to move from statistical and epigenetic associations to biological and psychological explanations within a multi-disciplinary and integrative approach of understanding mental health.

Abstract:Epigenetics is a scientific discipline encompassing the genetic and non-genetic related perspectives of heritable phenotypic modifications of whose aetiologies include behavioural, anthropogenic, environmental, metabolic and spatiotemporal variables. Behavioral epigenetics examines how epigenetics shapes animal and human behaviour to explicate how nurture moulds nature; nature prefers to biological heredity and nurture prefers to occurrrences in the environment and hereditary during the lifespan of all individuals. Behavioural epigenetics features how experiences and the environment produce individual disparities in behaviour, cognition, personality, and mental health influence gene expression. Epigenetic gene regulation relates to modification of DNA sequence and histones as well as DNA methylation. These epigenetic alterations effect the growth of neurons in the developing brain and functional modification of neurons in the developed brain, with resultant significant alterations in neuron morphology. Epigenetic changes occur in the developing fetus and throughout the lifespan of an individual, with alterations in individual traits and transgenerational inheritance. Epigenetics is associated with heritable changes in gene actions and these are not due to DNA sequence alterations. Epigenetics may be termed sustained, long-run changes in the transcription veracity of a heritable or non-heritable cell. DNA methylation and histone alteration are mechanisms which modify gene expression without changing the underlying DNA sequence. Gene expression is driven by repressor protein actions which bind to DNA silencer regions.DNA methylation turns a gene ''off'' culminating in genetic information impairment to be read from DNA, but extricating the methyl tag can turn ''on'' the gene. Histone alteration defines the packaging of DNA into the chromosomes; and.these changes influence gene expression. This review provides the latitude to examine the extant information in the universal characterizations of epigenetic formulations, such as ageing, susceptibility to pollutant and irritant exposure.

Abstract:The debate surrounding nature versus nurture remains a central question in neuroscience, psychology, and in psychiatry, holding implications for both aging processes and the etiology of mental illness. Epigenetics can serve as a bridge between genetic predisposition and environmental influences, thus offering a potential avenue for addressing these questions. Epigenetic clocks, in particular, offer a theoretical framework for measuring biological age based on DNA methylation signatures, enabling the identification of disparities between biological and chronological age. This structured review seeks to consolidate current knowledge regarding the relationship between mental disorders and epigenetic age within the brain. Through a comprehensive literature search encompassing databases such as EBSCO, PubMed, and ClinicalTrials.gov, relevant studies were identified and analyzed. Studies that met inclusion criteria were scrutinized, focusing on those with large sample sizes, analyses of both brain tissue and blood samples, investigation of frontal cortex markers, and a specific emphasis on schizophrenia and depressive disorders. Our review revealed a paucity of significant findings, yet notable insights emerged from studies meeting specific criteria. Studies characterized by extensive sample sizes, analysis of brain tissue and blood samples, assessment of frontal cortex markers, and a focus on schizophrenia and depressive disorders yielded particularly noteworthy results. Despite the limited number of significant findings, these studies shed light on the complex interplay between epigenetic aging and mental illness. While the current body of literature on epigenetic aging in mental disorders presents limited significant findings, it underscores the importance of further research in this area. Future studies should prioritize large sample sizes, comprehensive analyses of brain tissue and blood samples, exploration of specific brain regions such as the frontal cortex, and a focus on key mental disorders. Such endeavors will contribute to a deeper understanding of the relationship between epigenetic aging and mental illness, potentially informing novel diagnostic and therapeutic approaches.
