Abstract:The need for efficient energy utilization is driving research into ways to harvest ubiquitous waste heat. Here, we explore pyroelectric energy conversion from low-grade thermal sources that exploits strong field- and temperature-induced polarization susceptibilities in the relaxor ferroelectric 0.68Pb(Mg1/3Nb2/3)O3–0.32PbTiO3. Electric-field-driven enhancement of the pyroelectric response (as large as −550 μC m−2 K−1) and suppression of the dielectric response (by 72%) yield substantial figures of merit for pyroelectric energy conversion. Field- and temperature-dependent pyroelectric measurements highlight the role of polarization rotation and field-induced polarization in mediating these effects. Solid-state, thin-film devices that convert low-grade heat into electrical energy are demonstrated using pyroelectric Ericsson cycles, and optimized to yield maximum energy density, power density and efficiency of 1.06 J cm−3, 526 W cm−3 and 19% of Carnot, respectively; the highest values reported to date and equivalent to the performance of a thermoelectric with an effective ZT ≈ 1.16 for a temperature change of 10 K. Our findings suggest that pyroelectric devices may be competitive with thermoelectric devices for low-grade thermal harvesting.

Large electrocaloric response via percolation of polar nanoregions

Abstract:A first-principle-based effective Hamiltonian model is developed to investigate electrocaloric effects (ECE) of ferroelectric Pb(Sc0.5Ta0.5)O3 (PST) possessing different degrees of chemical ordering between Sc and Ta cations. It is found that PST exhibits large electrocaloric effects when the electric field drives a paraelectricto-ferroelectric phase transition isothermally above the Curie temperature. More precisely, for any specific temperature above the Curie temperature, the electrocaloric coefficient exhibits its maximum at a critical electric field that is precisely the threshold of percolation for which the polar nanoregions begin to propagate inside the whole sample, with dipoles being parallel to the field's direction. This percolation-induced maximal ECE occurs for all the possible degrees of chemical ordering, therefore making it a general and novel mechanism, based on which a strategy is further proposed to improve the ECE.

Abstract:Achieving high power conversion efficiencies (PCEs) in ferroelectric photovoltaics (PVs) is a longstanding challenge. Although recently ferroelectric thick films, composite films, and bulk crystals have all been demonstrated to exhibit PCEs >1%, these systems still suffer from severe recombination because of the fundamentally low conductivities of ferroelectrics. Further improvement of PCEs may therefore rely on thickness reduction if the reduced recombination could overcompensate for the loss in light absorption. Here, a PCE of up to 2.49% (under 365-nm ultraviolet illumination) was demonstrated in a 12-nm Pb(Zr0.2Ti0.8)O-3 (PZT) ultrathin film. The strategy to realize such a high PCE consists of reducing the film thickness to be comparable with the depletion width, which can simultaneously suppress recombination and lower the series resistance. The basis of our strategy lies in the fact that the PV effect originates from the interfacial Schottky barriers, which is revealed by measuring and modeling the thickness-dependent PV characteristics. In addition, the Schottky barrier parameters (particularly the depletion width) are evaluated by investigating the thickness-dependent ferroelectric, dielectric and conduction properties. Our study therefore provides an effective strategy to obtain high-efficiency ferroelectric PVs and demonstrates the great potential of ferroelectrics for use in ultrathin-film PV devices.
Hierarchically structured lead-free barium strontium titanate for low-grade thermal energy harvesting

Abstract:Low-grade heat conversion is one of the most promising strategies to realise carbon-neutral electricity production. Here we present a study on a hierarchically structured porous pyroelectric barium strontium titanate (BST) ceramic with a low Curie temperature and improved thermal energy harvesting performance. The aligned porous structure is beneficial to achieve a greatly reduced permittivity and heat capacity, combined with a high degree of polarisation to maintain a high pyroelectric coefficient. These characteristics contributed to significantly improved sensing and harvesting pyroelectric figures-of-merit, where the thermal energy harvesting figure-of-merit (<math>FE′</math>) increased by 510% when the porosity reached to 54 vol%, compared to that of the dense BST ceramic. After rectification of the AC pyroelectric current to a DC current, the electric output was stored on a 1 μF capacitor whose voltage after 20 s increased with increasing volume fraction of porosity; namely 5.8 V (dense, 3 vol% porosity), 6.9 V (30 vol%), 7.5 V (43 vol%) and 9.2 V (54 vol%). A maximum energy density of 4.26 μJ/mm3 was obtained from the BST with 54 vol% porosity, which was 1.6 times higher than that of the dense counterpart (2.71 μJ/mm3). This aligned porous structure therefore represents a new and promising architecture for facile harvesting and conversion of low-grade waste heat into electrical power.

Halide Tunablility Leads to Enhanced Biomechanical Energy Harvesting in Lead-Free Cs2SnX6-PVDF Composites

Abstract:The main challenges impeding the widespread use of organic-inorganic lead halide perovskites in modern-day technological devices are their long-term instability and lead contamination. Among other environmentally convivial and sustainable alternatives, Cs2SnX6 (X = Cl, Br, and I) compounds have shown promise as ambient-stable, lead-free materials for energy harvesting, and optoelectronic applications. Additionally, they have demonstrated tremendous potential for the fabrication of self-powered nanogenerators in conjunction with piezoelectric polymers like polyvinylidene-fluoride (PVDF). We report on the fabrication of composites constituting solvothermally synthesized Cs2SnX6 nanostructures and PVDF. The electroactive phases in PVDF were boosted by the incorporation of Cs2SnX6, leading to enhanced piezoelectricity in the composites. First-principles density functional theory (DFT) studies were carried out to understand the interfacial interaction between the Cs2SnX6 and PVDF, which unravels the mechanism of physisorption between the perovskite and PVDF, leading to enhanced piezoresponse. The halide ions in the inorganic Cs2SnX6 perovskites were varied systematically, and the piezoelectric behaviors of the respective piezoelectric nanogenerators (PENGs) were investigated. Further, the dielectric properties of these halide perovskite-based hybrids are quantified, and their piezoresponse amplitude, piezoelectric output signals, and charging capacity are also evaluated. Out of the several films fabricated, the optimized Cs2SnI6_PVDF film shows a piezoelectric coefficient (d33) value of ∼200 pm V-1 and a remanent polarization of ∼0.74 μC cm-2 estimated from piezoresponse force microscopy and polarization hysteresis loop measurement, respectively. The optimized Cs2SnI6_PVDF-based device produced an instantaneous output voltage of ∼167 V, a current of ∼5.0 μA, and a power of ∼835 μW across a 5 MΩ resistor when subjected to periodic vertical compression. The output voltage of this device is used to charge a capacitor with a 10 μF capacitance up to 2.2 V, which is then used to power some commercial LEDs. In addition to being used as a pressure sensor, the device is employed to monitor human physiological activities. The device demonstrates excellent operational durability over a span of several months in an ambient environment vouching for its exceptional potential in application to mechanical energy harvesting and pressure sensing applications.
Field Induced Phase Transitions and Energy Harvesting Performance of (Pb,la)(zr,sn,ti)o-3 Single Crystal

Abstract:(Pb,La)(Zr,Sn,Ti)O3 (PLZST) single crystals with composition close to the morphotropic phase boundary had been grown by the flux method. The antiferroelectric-ferroelectric phase switching electric field was 0.8 kV/mm. Temperature-dependent dielectric and polarization versus electric field hysteresis loops revealed that the electric field induced ferroelectric phase could transform back into the antiferroelectric phase at depolarization temperature (145 °C). An enhanced pyroelectric coefficient value of 1.46 μC/cm2/K was obtained at 145 °C, which is several times larger than that of conventional pyroelectric materials. Furthermore, multiple peak pyroelectric responses and an enhanced harvested energy density value of 0.4 J/cm3 were achieved in the PLZST crystal. The enhanced harvested energy density and multiple peak pyroelectric responses make the PLZST crystal a promising candidate for high sensitive temperature sensors and energy conversion technologies.
A Bi-Functional Ferroelectric Pb(Zr0.52Ti0.48)O3 Films: Energy Storage Properties and Ferroelectric Photovoltaic Effects

Abstract:In this work, we reported a bi-functional ferroelectric Pb(Zr0.52Ti0.48)O-3 (PZT) films which show energy storage properties and photovoltaic effects. The PZT films were crystallized into pure pseudo-cubic structure with the (001) preferred orientation. The polarization characterizations revealed a large recoverable energy storage density (similar to 11.2 J/cm(3)) and a high energy conversion efficiency (similar to 68%) with good thermal stability (25 degrees C-100 degrees C) and fast response (> 10 Hz). Meanwhile, the Pt/PZT/Pt capacitor presented a significant photovoltaic effect. The open circuit voltage and the short circuit current were -0.92 V and 139 mu A/cm(2) at original state, respectively, while they were slightly increased to -1.01 V and 155 mu A/cm(2) in polarization-up state, and slightly decreased to -0.77 V and 90 mu A/cm(2) in polarization-down state. The maximum power conversion efficiency was enhanced one order of magnitude than that of polycrystalline PZT film reported elsewhere. Our study opens up a pathway toward developing bi-functional ferroelectric devices with simultaneously high energy storage density and high photovoltaic performance.
High-performance piezoelectric energy harvesting in amorphous perovskite thin films deposited directly on a plastic substrate

Abstract:Most reported thin-film piezoelectric energy harvesters have been based on cantilever-type crystalline ferroelectric oxide thin films deposited on rigid substrates, which utilize vibrational input sources. Herein, we introduce flexible amorphous thin-film energy harvesters based on perovskite CaCu3Ti4O12 (CCTO) thin films on a plastic substrate for highly competitive electromechanical energy harvesting. The room-temperature sputtering of CCTO thin films enable the use of plastic substrates to secure reliable flexibility, which has not been available thus far. Surprisingly, the resultant amorphous nature of the films results in an output voltage and power density of ~38.7 V and ~2.8 × 106 μW cm-3, respectively, which break the previously reported record for typical polycrystalline ferroelectric oxide thin-film cantilevers. The origin of this excellent electromechanical energy conversion is systematically explored as being related to the localized permanent dipoles of TiO6 octahedra and lowered dielectric constant in the amorphous state, depending on the stoichiometry and defect states. This is the leading example of a high-performance flexible piezoelectric energy harvester based on perovskite oxides not requiring a complex process for transferring films onto a plastic substrate.

Battery Detached Energy Conversion by Pyroelectric Effect

Abstract:We propose a pyroelectric energy conversion device that converts heat directly to electricity. In contrast to conventional pyroelectric energy conversion designs, this energy harvesting system is detached from any external power sources, operating only under periodically varying temperature. Such detachment unambiguously attributes the converted electricity to heat that drives the change of polarization in the pyroelectric material, not to the electric field alternation caused by the external battery. Using pure and Zr doped BaTiO$_3$, we demonstrate the electricity generation in consecutive temperature cycles. We further develop a thermodynamic model for the energy conversion system. Our model suggests that the work output is rate dependent: the work output per cycle is linearly dependent on the heat/cooling frequency below the predicted threshold. The linearity is confirmed by experiments, and the threshold frequency is derived by theory. Finally we propose a figure of merit that separates the materials intrinsic properties from the system design parameters. The figure of merit guides the future material development and device improvement. Our work clears out confusions and reforms the foundation for pyroelectric materials' resurgence as a competitor for green electricity.

Abstract:(Pb,La)(Zr,Sn,Ti)O3 (PLZST) single crystals with their chemical composition located at the tetragonal antiferroelectric region are grown via the flux method in a PbO-PbF2-B2O3 mixture. Segregation of the Ti4+ component in the as-grown crystals is observed due to the strong affinity between the oxygen anion and Ti4+ ions. The critical electric field of the antiferroelectric to ferroelectric phase transition is determined to be about 0.5 kV mm-1. The electric field induced ferroelectric phase transforms back into the antiferroelectric phase at a depolarization temperature of 125 °C. Anisotropy of the harvested energy density and electrocaloric behaviors are achieved for the [100], [110] and [111]-oriented PLZST crystals. Based on the thermodynamic theory approach, all the abovementioned behaviors originate from the anisotropic total entropy change. Enhanced electrocaloric strength (0.3 K mm kV-1) and the harvested energy density of 0.62 J cm-3 are obtained in the [111]-oriented PLZST crystals. Our results demonstrate the competence of PLZST single crystals for cooling devices and pyroelectric energy harvesting and provide new opportunities to improve energy harvesting density and electrocaloric properties via the anisotropic structural layout, which make the PLZST crystals attractive for solid state cooling devices and energy conversion technologies.
Potentials and Limits of PMN-PT and PIN-PMN-PT Single Crystals for Pyroelectric Energy Harvesting

Abstract:Waste heat is inherent to industrial activities, IT services (e.g., data centers and microprocessors), human mobility, and many other common processes. The power lost each year in this way has been estimated in the 1000 TWh in the EU which, owing to skyrocketing energy prices and not least the urgent need for decarbonizing the economy, has engendered tremendous research efforts among scientists and engineers to recover/recycle this waste energy. Beyond established thermal engineering solutions for waste heat, advances in multifunctional materials open new paradigms for waste heat harvesting. Two smart material types are of particular focus and interest at present; these are thermoelectric and pyroelectric materials, which can both transform heat to electrical power, though via different effects. The present paper summarizes our research work on a new class of pyroelectric materials, namely oriented (1-x)(Pb(Mg1/3Nb2/3)O3–xPbTiO3 (PMN-PT) and x-Pb(In1/2 Nb1/2)O3-y-Pb(Mg1/3 Nb2/3)O3-(1-x-y)-PbTiO3 (PIN-PMN-PT) single crystals that exhibit some of the highest pyroelectric properties ever measured. First, a figure of merit for pyroelectric energy harvesting is derived, followed by a detailed assessment of the properties of the said crystals and how they depend on structure, poling, thickness, and temperature. The properties are further contrasted with those of conventional pyroelectric crystals. It is concluded that the PMN-PT-base single crystals are best suited for harvesting devices with a working temperature range from 40 to 100 °C, which encompasses waste heat generated by data centers and some chemical and industrial processes, affording the highest figure of merit among pyroelectric materials.

Abstract:Self-powered and flexible perovskite photodetectors are holding great promise owing to their potential for high-performance wearable and portable optoelectronic applications. The light-induced ferro-pyro-phototronic effect can boost the performances of ferroelectric materials-based photodetector systems significantly. However, the utilization of the ferro-pyro-phototronic effect in polycrystalline halide perovskites films-based flexible photodetectors is rarely mentioned. Here, a ferro-pyro-phototronic effect boosted self-powered, flexible, and ultra-stable photodetector based on 1D/3D mixed perovskite ferroelectric film/P3HT heterojunction is demonstrated. By employing Pb(SCN)2 as lead source to partially for fabricating high-quality MAPbI3 film and incorporating 1D ferroelectric perovskite TMIMPbI3, the overall optoelectronic performances were largely enhanced, with a low dark current of 7 × 10−9 A, a responsivity of 6.6 mA/W and a detectivity of 5 × 109 Jones. The PDs displayed good folding endurance, and anti-humidity stability. The excellent performance is attributed to the reduced trap-density and enhanced pyro-phototronic effect induced by improved crystallinity and introduced ferroelectricity.

Abstract:Organic-inorganic hybrid perovskites are currently an active research topic in the field of energy and next-generation electronics. Their selectable organic and inorganic components provide infinite possibilities for designing functional materials with multiple applications. Herein, we present a new one-dimensional BaNiO3-like organic-inorganic hybrid perovskite (thiazolidinium)CdBr3 (1), which displays a phase transition at 263 K and a switchable second harmonic generation (SHG) response. Intriguingly, 1 shows a pyroelectric coefficient pe of ∼0.6 μC·cm-2·K-1 and a piezoelectric output voltage of ∼2.0 V for our fabricated piezoelectric generation device, indicating its great potential for pyroelectric sensors, self-powered low-voltage electronic devices, and energy harvesters. Moreover, the presence of a specific thioether donor enables 1 to appropriately adsorb Pd(II) ions, which can be monitored by the corresponding change in phase transition behavior, SHG signal, and pyroelectric response. This work provides a new insight to develop new multifunctional materials, demonstrating the feasibility of utilizing organic-inorganic hybrid perovskites to realize future self-powered low-voltage devices and energy harvesters.

Abstract:Pyroelectric materials are naturally electrically polarized and exhibits a built-in spontaneous polarization in their unit cell structure even in the absence of any externally applied electric field. These materials are regarded as one of the ideal detector elements for infrared applications because they have a fast response time and uniform sensitivity at room temperature across all wavelengths. Crystals of the perovskite lead titanate (PbTiO3) family show pyroelectric characteristics and undergo structural phase transitions. They have a high Curie temperature (the temperature at which the material changes from the ferroelectric (polar) to the paraelectric (nonpolar) phase), high pyroelectric coefficient, high spontaneous polarization, low dielectric constant, and constitute important component materials not only useful for infrared detection, but also with vast applications in electronic, optic, and MEMS devices. However, the preparation of large perfect and pure single crystals PbTiO3 is challenging. Additionally, difficulties arise in the application of such bulk crystals in terms of connection to processing circuits, large size, and high voltages required for their operation. In this part of the review paper, we explain the electrical behavior and characterization techniques commonly utilized to unravel the pyroelectric properties of lead titanate and its derivatives. Further, it explains how the material preparation techniques affect the electrical characteristics of resulting thin films. It also provides an in-depth discussion of the measurement of pyroelectric coefficients using different techniques.

Abstract:The use of hybrid halide Perovskites is helping us get closer to our aim of completely selfsufficient structures in terms of energy production. Preparation of a device of photoactive material CH3NH3PbI3 {FTO (Fluorine-doped tin Oxide)/ CH3NH3PbI3/SpiroOMeTAD/Al} for the photovoltaic applications has been described in this article. Producing a homogeneous thin film through the use of lower temperature, processedsolution devices with one-step spin coating processes is an essential stage in the fabrication process. To generate the thin films on the FTO-substrate, the one-step spin coating approach was utilized for the deposition of the precursor solution, which consisted of methylammonium iodide and lead iodide in a molar ratio of 3:1. This technique was employed to prepare the thin films. The FESEM technique was utilized to carry out the investigation of the surface morphology of this thin layer. In addition, the essential parameters of this device, like barrier height, saturation current, current density, ideality factor, carrier mobility, resistance, carrier lifetime, and capacitance have been computed using current-voltage (I-V) characteristics and the impedance spectroscopy technique. A laser with a power of 20 milliwatts and a wavelength of 532 nanometers was used to light the gadget. The current conduction mechanism exhibits ohmic behavior at a low voltage, while at medium voltages, TFSCLC is the mechanism that regulates charge transportation. Despite the fact that TCSCLC is demonstrated at higher voltages. The TCSCLC model was used to conduct an investigation of the hole's mobility.

Abstract:Lithium tantalate crystals, as a type of pyroelectric material, stand out from many other pyroelectric materials due to the advantages of high Curie temperature, large pyroelectric coefficient, high figure of merits, and environmental friendliness. Due to the pyroelectric effect caused by their spontaneous polarization, lithium tantalate crystals have broad application prospects in wide spectral bandwidth and uncooled pyroelectric detectors. This article reviews the pyroelectric properties of lithium tantalate crystals and evaluates methods for pyroelectric properties, methods for modulating pyroelectric properties, and pyroelectric detectors and their applications. The prospects of lithium tantalate thin films, doped lithium tantalate crystals, and near stoichiometric lithium tantalate crystals as response components for pyroelectric detectors are also discussed.

Significant Enhancement of Thermoelectric Performance in Bi0.5Sb1.5Te3 Thin Film via Ferroelectric Polarization Engineering

Abstract:This study utilizes ferroelectric engineering to enhance the thermoelectric properties of Bi0.5Sb1.5Te3 (BST) thin films. By adjusting the polarization direction and voltage of the Pb(Zr0.52Ti0.48)O3 (PZT) substrate, the power factor of BST thin films increases by 26.7% to 15.2 μW cm−1 K−2. This work presents a new approach for enhancing thermoelectric thin films. The Bi0.5Sb1.5Te3 (BST) thin film shows great promise in harvesting low‐grade heat energy due to its excellent thermoelectric performance at room temperature. In order to further enhance its thermoelectric performance, specifically the power factor and output power, new approaches are highly desirable beyond the common "composition‐structure‐performance" paradigm. This study introduces ferroelectric polarization engineering as a novel strategy to achieve these goals. A Pb(Zr0.52Ti0.48)O3/Bi0.5Sb1.5Te3 (PZT/BST) hybrid film is fabricated via magnetron sputtering. Density functional theory calculations demonstrate PZT polarization's influence on charge redistribution and interlayer charge transfer at the PZT/BST interface, facilitating adjustable carrier transport behavior and power factor of the BST film. As a result, a 26.7% enhancement of the power factor, from unpolarized 12.0 to 15.2 μW cm−1 K−2, is reached by 2 kV out‐of‐plane downward polarization of PZT. Furthermore, a five‐leg generator constructed using this PZT/BST hybrid film exhibits a maximum output power density of 13.06 W m−2 at ΔT = 39 K, which is 20.8% higher than that of the unpolarized one (10.81 W m−2). The research presents a new approach to enhance thermoelectric thin films' power factor and output performance by introducing ferroelectric polarization engineering.

Abstract:The 'pyro-phototronic effect' plays a nontrivial role in advancing ferroelectric (FE) devices of light detectors, light emitting diodes, and other uses of smart technologies. In this scenario, a premier FE copolymer poly(vinylidene fluoride-co-trifluoro ethylene) is reinforced with a lead free non-centro symmetric Cs2SnI6 perovskite exhibits profound merits in a hybrid nanostructure. The ferro-, pyro- and piezo-electrics are coupled to 'photoexcitaion' of exotic charges that actively empower the synergetic features. The Cs2SnI6 embodied in small crystallites therein is distorted in a non-centrosymmetric class of a rhomboid structure (a new phase) than a centrosymmetric fcc phase. It boosts the emerging properties. A systematic study of the bulk heterojunction reveals the four stage pyro-phototronic response of transient photocurrent under visible light illumination of a solar simulator (intensity ~100 mW/cm2). The illumination at a 0.025 Hz frequency induces a temporal temperature change, ΔT  3.1 K, of the system, leading to induce pyroelectricity in an integrated circuit. The rise time and response time for the heterojunction are observed as ~ 326 ms and ~225 ms, respectively. The output pyro-phototronic current rises up as ΔT arises in an on-off cycle. As a result, the integrated pyro-phototronic effect could be utilized to empower the optoelectronic devices, as well as harvesting stray 'thermal energy'.
