Abstract:At present, there are various limitations to harvesting ambient waste heat which include the lack of economically viable material and innovative design features that can efficiently recover low grade heat for useful energy conversion. In this work, a thermal nanophotonic-pyroelectric (TNPh-pyro) scheme consisting of a metamaterial multilayer and pyroelectric material, which performs synergistic waste heat rejection and photothermal heat-to-electricity conversion, is presented. Unlike any other pyroelectric configuration, this conceptual design deviates from the conventional by deliberately employing back-reflecting NIR to enable waste heat reutilization/recuperation to enhance pyroelectric generation, avoiding excessive solar heat uptake and also retaining high visual transparency of the device. Passive solar reflective cooling up to 4.1 °C is demonstrated. Meanwhile, the photothermal pyroelectric performance capitalizing on the back-reflecting effect shows an open circuit voltage (Voc) and short circuit current (Isc) enhancement of 152 and 146%, respectively. In addition, the designed photoactive component (TiO2/Cu) within the metamaterial multilayer provides the TNPh-pyro system with an effective air pollutant photodegradation functionality. Finally, proof-of-concept for concurrent photothermal management and enhanced solar pyroelectric generation under a real outdoor environment is demonstrated.

Abstract:Pyroelectricity was discovered long ago and utilized to convert thermal energy that is tiny and usually wasted in daily life into useful electrical energy. The combination of pyroelectricity and optoelectronic yields a novel research field named as Pyro-Phototronic, where light-induced temperature variation of the pyroelectric material produces pyroelectric polarization charges at the interfaces of semiconductor optoelectronic devices, capable of modulating the device performances. In recent years, the pyro-phototronic effect has been vastly adopted and presents huge potential applications in functional optoelectronic devices. Here, we first introduce the basic concept and working mechanism of the pyro-phototronic effect and next summarize the recent progress of the pyro-phototronic effect in advanced photodetectors and light energy harvesting based on diverse materials with different dimensions. The coupling between the pyro-phototronic effect and the piezo-phototronic effect has also been reviewed. This review provides a comprehensive and conceptual summary of the pyro-phototronic effect and perspectives for pyro-phototronic-effect-based potential applications.

Hybrid Photon-Enhanced Thermionic Emission and Photovoltaic Converter with Concentrated Solar Power

Abstract:Photon-enhanced thermionic emission (PETE) converter is a solid-state heat engine, in which hot electrons emit from a p-type semiconductor cathode to an anode across a vacuum gap. Photon-enhanced mechanism reflects in reducing the electron emission barrier by photo-induced quasi-Fermi level splitting. High photon-enhancement mode requires a thin cathode thickness to reduce the recombination of excited-electron during diffusion. Whereas, thin cathode causes huge photon penetration loss. In this work, we propose an original concept of hybrid photon-enhanced thermionic emission converter and photovoltaic (PETE-PV) solar cell. The penetrating solar photons are utilized by photovoltaic sub-devices to yield additional output power. The operating characteristics and superiority of a four-terminal PETE-PV solar cell were demonstrated by simulation. Results show that the solar cell gains a 4-8% point of power conversion efficiency boost thanks to the photovoltaic sub-device. In addition, we developed a PETE prototype with light impinging through a transparent anode (i.e., indium-tin-oxide film) to a cathode surface. Experimental results demonstrate that the cathode saturation current under illumination is similar to 300-fold larger than that of pure thermionic emission mode, and the cathode work function is reduced by 0.6 eV. This study lays a solid foundation for further development and application of PETE-PV solar cells.

Abstract:Harvesting of prevalent low grade solar heat from otherwise wasted energy has received tremendous attention. However, extensive and continuous conversion remains challenging due to distributed nature of heat, limited temperature difference with the surroundings, ambient solar heat fluctuation, and night time period of darkness. Herein, a hybrid thermogalvanic and pyroelectric generator for multisituation structured/unstructured, static/dynamic, and day/night waste heat harnessing for continuous operation is reported. Powered by versatile thermal energy harvesting strategies, the hybrid photothermal generator is able to provide a more resilient and adaptive energy system to meet diversified energy demand, irrespective of unpredictable conditions. Taking advantage of the superior photothermal properties and electrical conductivity of carbon nanotubes/cellulose nanocrystals nanocomposite, together with the heat localization effect induced by sponge-confined electrolyte, simultaneous high thermogalvanic and pyroelectric performance is achieved with maximum outputs of 1.86 and 0.9 mW m(-2), respectively. Moreover, a scaled-up hybrid photothermal generator is successfully deployed on both land and water surfaces under natural sunlight, and also the feasibility of nighttime operation is verified. Such hybrid photothermal generators presented here offer an all-day clean energy solution as well as a feasible and cost-effective alternative to capitalize on solar energy and blue energy.

Abstract:The efficiencies of photovoltaic (PV) and thermoelectric (TE) have been limited by the intrinsic materials properties. In solar applications, PV utilizes the shorter wavelength end of the solar spectrum while its longer portion (IR) can be photothermally (PT) converted to heat by special nano structures for TE electricity generation. We have developed spectral modulating nano systems made of Fe 3 O 4 @Cu 2-X S nanoparticles and chlorophyllin capable of synergistic PT-TE-PV solar harvesting and energy generation. In this system, solar light is harvested through the transparent photothermal spectral modulator (TPSM) and segregated into different wavelengths: the IR is absorbed to photothermally heat up the TE hot end for the required thermoelectric temperature span; the UV/visible is directed to PV with reduced IR for significantly reduced heating, thus enhanced power conversion efficiency (PCE). Upon removal of IR, the PV surface temperature can be lowered from 86.9 °C to 65 °C after 120 min solar irradiation, resulting in PCE increase from 16.3 % (dropped from 25.1 % at 0 min) to 19. 4 %. A PT − TE − PV solar energy module (PTPSEM) is designed based on TPSM to synergistically generate energy by separately utilizing the full spectrum of solar light. Using the same solar light source, while generating electricity via PV, an additional 2.4 % is gained by a series of commercial thermoelectric generators (TEG), adding up to a total of 21. 8 % system efficiency which significantly exceeds the average efficiency of the commercial silicon PV panel used in this study. The spectral modulation mechanism through TPSM is identified based on the optical behaviors of chlorophyllin and Fe 3 O 4 @Cu 2-X S. Also discussed is the design concept of PTPSEM.

Abstract:Heteroepitaxial ZnO transparent current spreading layers with low sheet resistances were deposited on GaN-based light emitting diodes using aqueous solution phase epitaxy at temperatures below 90°C. The performance of the LEDs was analyzed and compared to identical devices using electron-beam evaporated indium tin oxide transparent current spreading layers. White LEDs with ZnO layers provided high luminous efficacy–157 lm/W at 0.5A/cm2, and 84.8 lm/W at 35A/cm2, 24% and 50% higher, respectively, than devices with ITO layers. The improvement appears to be due to the enhanced current spreading and low optical absorption provided by the ZnO.

Abstract:Although perovskite has been widely explored in optoelectronic devices, it has been rarely explored as a Schottky junction. Here, we demonstrate a light- and mechanical-energy co-harvesting generator based on a dynamic metal/perovskite Schottky junction. In dark conditions, by moving Al over perovskite film (conductivity: 70.0 S/cm), output voltage and current density of -0.70 V and -41.1 A/m(2), respectively, are achieved. As defects eliminate the photo-generated carriers in the static metal/perovskite junction under light illumination, the photoresponse is negligible. Strikingly, the output current of dynamic metal/perovskite junction under light illumination is enhanced by 3-fold compared with the dynamic junction in the dark condition. This nonlinear photo-enhanced effect is proposed as a result of strong interaction between the photo-generated and bound back carriers in the dynamic Schottky junction as well as the high light-absorption coefficient of perovskite. A flexible Al/perovskite generator has been demonstrated as a wearable energy-harvesting device.

Abstract:Findings and reports in the field of perovskite solar cells (PSCs) have been phenomenal and embrace diverse perspectives such as technical issues, yielding, marketing, and environmental concerns. Bottlenecks in the structure, manufacturing, and operation of PSCs have been frequently addressed; the use of various means including crystallography and kinetics studies, simulation, material, solution, and surface/interface engineering, as well as their outcomes, have yielded certified efficiency of 23.7%. However, the short lifecycle, large waste-to-harvest ratio, functional failure during bending and in the dark mode, environmental and stability issues, and lack of power storage hinder their commercial viability. As a remedy, PSCs can be teamed up with one or multiple mechanical or thermal energy-harvesting or electrochemical power storage devices that can fully or partially overcome these nonidealities. Here, the means of integrating different devices with PSCs to form hybrid packs are discussed. The factors contributing toward the efficiency and mechanical robustness of PSCs and their hybrid devices upon integration are investigated. As an essential bridging component, carbon electrodes are also considered. Furthermore, due to the pressing standards in the energy sector, hybrid devices with nontoxic lead (Pb)-free perovskites should form ideal power packs. Therefore, with reference to their lattice model, optical characteristics, and resulting photovoltaic (PV) performance, they have also been briefly highlighted.
Photo-Thermoelectric Generation in MoS2/Pyroelectric Polymer Nanocomposites for Collection of Near-Infrared Light Energy

Abstract:We design a photo-thermoelectric nanogenerator (PTENG) based on a flexible film of molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) dispersed in a pyroelectric polymer. The transition-metal dichalcogenide as thin-layered nanosheets can harvest the incident near-infrared (NIR) light and convert it into thermal energy. The pyroelectric polymer subsequently transduced the thermal energy collected by the inorganic nanosheets into electric energy. Under NIR irradiation, the PTENG can generate voltage and photocurrent instantly, and the output kept at high level for a long time. High thermoelectric conversion coefficient was obtained, which arised from efficient coupling between photothermal and pyroelectric effects. Theoretical simulation distinguished the contribution of MoS2 in the polymer nanocomposite. MoS2 significantly increased the temperature change rate in pyroelectric polymer films, leading to enhanced photoelectric response in the device.
Transparent Multispectral Photonic Electrode for All-Weather Stable and Efficient Perovskite Solar Cells

Abstract:Perovskite solar cells (PSCs) are the most promising technology for advancing current photovoltaic performance. However, the main challenge for their practical deployment and commercialization is their operational stability, affected by solar illumination and heating, as well as the electric field that is generated in the PV device by light exposure. Here, we propose a transparent multispectral photonic electrode placed on top of the glass substrate of solar cells, which simultaneously reduces the device solar heating and enhances its efficiency. Specifically, the proposed photonic electrode, composed of a low-resistivity metal and a conductive layer, simultaneously serves as a highly-efficient infrared filter and an ultra-thin transparent front contact, decreasing devices' solar heating and operating temperature. At the same time, it simultaneously serves as an anti-reflection coating, enhancing the efficiency. We additionally enhance the device cooling by coating the front glass substrate side with a visibly transparent film (PDMS), which maximizes substrate's thermal radiation. To determine the potential of our photonic approach and fully explore the cooling potential of PSCs, we first provide experimental characterizations of the absorption properties (in both visible and infrared wavelengths) of state-of-the-art PSCs among the most promising ones regarding the efficiency, stability, and cost. We then numerically show that applying our approach to promising PSCs can result in lower operating temperatures by over 9.0 oC and an absolute efficiency increase higher than 1.3%. These results are insensitive to varying environmental conditions. Our approach is simple and only requires modification of the substrate; it therefore points to a feasible photonic approach for advancing current photovoltaic performance with next-generation solar cell materials.

Abstract:Some ferroelectric materials have demonstrated both pyroelectric and photovoltaic effects for scavenging thermal and solar energies. However, how to couple pyroelectric and photovoltaic effects in ferroelectric materials remains a challenge. Here, a ferro-pyro-phototronic effect based on coupling pyroelectric and photovoltaic effects has been utilized to enhance the photocurrent in a ferroelectric BaTiO3-based flexible photodetector system. As compared with a purely photovoltaic system, the corresponding current peak and plateau were 451.9% and 17.2% higher in the coupled photovoltaic-pyroelectric system, respectively. The results can be explained by ferro-pyro-phototronic effect with an induced energy band bending. As a demonstration of its potential application, we developed a sensing system that is suitable for detecting and recognizing both light and temperature variations by recording the electrical signals mapped as an array.

Boosting solar-to-pyroelectric energy harvesting via a plasmon-enhanced solar-thermal conversion approach

Abstract:Pyroelectric technology promises the potential transformation of waste heat into useful electrical energy to address the global energy and environmental crises. However, current designs suffer from low power output and the need for additional mechanical devices to drive pyroelectric conversion. Here, we introduce an efficient sunlight-triggered pyroelectric nanogenerator (S-PENG) by combining an Au@polyethylenimine modified graphene oxide (Au@rGO-PEI)-based solar-thermal layer with a PVDF pyroelectric layer. Our strategy integrates rGO’s photothermal properties and Au nanoparticles’ plasmonic effects to boost sunlight absorption for enhanced pyroelectric conversion. When S-PENG is irradiated with sunlight, solar-thermal temperature rapidly reaches ~68 °C in 30 s which is 23 °C higher than neat PVDF. The superior solar-thermal conversion consequently enables Au@rGO-PEI/PVDF to achieve a high power output of 940 μW/m2 that is up to 35-fold better than other pyroelectric devices. By further incorporating S-PENG onto rotating windmill blades, we showcase a blade-type pyroelectric generator for direct solar energy harvesting without needing external light intensity adjustment device. This unique design functions efficiently at various outdoor environments (e.g. temperature, wind, and rain), notably achieving a high power output of 2700 μW/m2 that can be stored in a capacitor (Voc, ~ 5.2 V, 300 s charging). Our work offers valuable insights for the design of next-generation S-PENG and their facile integration with other energy technologies (e.g. windmill) for concurrent electricity harvesting from different green energy sources.

Abstract:The treatment of malignant melanoblastomas presents a discouraging and difficult problem. The mortality rate is notoriously high and the results of treatment uniformly poor. The physician who seeks to increase his knowledge of the melanotic tumors is confronted by a large volume of interesting but confusing literature. We have learned a great deal about these tumors through clinical experience. An enormous amount of investigation has also been carried out in regard to the related developmental, cytologic, genetic, endocrinologic, chemical and physical aspects of pigment cell activity. So urgent was the need for correlating this basic knowledge that a conference was recently held to discuss all the various aspects of the "Biology of Normal and Atypical Pigment Cell Growth." 1 This historic meeting, in which many of the pioneers and leaders of current thought in this field participated, stands as a milestone in efforts to understand and combat these complex lesions.
Flexible Hybrid Photo-Thermoelectric Generator Based on Single Thermoelectric Effect for Simultaneously Harvesting Thermal and Radiation Energies

Abstract:Wearable electronic devices have great potential in the fields of the Internet of Things (IoT), sports and entertainment, and healthcare, and they are essential in advancing the development of next-generation electronic information technology. However, conventional lithium batteries, which are currently the main power supply of wearable electronic devices, have some critical issues, such as frequent charging, environmental pollution, and no surface adaptability, which limit the further development of wearable electronic devices. To address these challenges, we present a flexible hybrid photothermoelectric generator (PTEG) with a simple structure composed of a thermoelectric generator (TEG) and a light-to-thermal conversion layer to simultaneously harvest thermal and radiation energies based on a single working mechanism. The mature mass-fabrication technology of screen printing was applied to successively prepare n-type (i.e., Bi2Te2.7Se0.3) and p-type (i.e., Sb2Te3) thermoelectric inks atop a polyimide substrate to form the TEG with a serpentine thermocouple chain, which was further covered by a light-to-thermal conversion layer to constitute the PTEG. The resulting PTEG with five pairs of thermocouples generated a direct-current output of 82.4 mV at a temperature difference of 50 °C and a direct-current output of 41.2 mV under 20 mW/cm2 infrared radiation. Meanwhile, the remarkable mechanical reliability and output stability were experimentally demonstrated through a systematic test, which indicated the feasibility and potential of the developed PTEG as a reliable power source. In addition, as desirable application prototypes, the fabricated PTEGs have been successfully demonstrated to harvest biothermal energy and infrared radiation to drive portable electronic devices (e.g., a calculator and a clock). Ultraflexible PEDOT:PSS/Helical Carbon Nanotubes Film for All-in-One Photothermoelectric Conversion

Abstract:Photothermoelectric (PTE) conversion can achieve the recovery of low-quality light or heat efficiently. Much effort has been devoted to the exploitation of the inorganic heterogeneous asynchronous (separate) PTE conversion system. Here, a full organic PTE film with a pseudobilayer architecture (PBA) according to the homogeneous synchronous (all-in-one) PTE conversion hypothesis was prepared via successive drop-casting a PEDOT:PSS/helical carbon nanotube (HCNT) mixture and PEDOT:PSS onto a vacuum ultraviolet treated substrate. Our results prove that the heptagon-pentagon pairs embedded in HCNTs promote a denser arrangement of the molecular chains of PEDOT, which enhances the crystallinity and affects the thermoelectric properties. The weak connection and hollow structure of HCNTs inhibit the dissipation of heat, and the zT value of the film reaches over 0.01. The PBA film shows better photothermal conversion performance than a neat PEDOT:PSS film and stably generates a temperature difference of over 25.68 °C without external cooling. A flexible PTE chip demo was manufactured, and the ideal open-circuit voltage (simulated via COMSOL) of that reaches over 1.5 mV under weak NIR stimulation (83.12 mW/cm2), which is the best value reported for an organic all-in-one PTE device, and the real maximum output power reaches 2.55 nW (166.01 mW/cm2). The chip has incredible ultraflexibility, and its inner resistance changes less than 1.42% after 10000 bending cycles and displays ultrahigh stability (similarity >90%) in a continuous periodic output. Our work fills the deficit of homogeneous synchronous PTE research for a PEDOT:PSS composite and is a preliminary attempt in an ultraflexible integrated all-in-one PTE chip design.

Abstract:Abstract Pyroelectricity originates from spontaneous polarization variation, promising in omnipresent non-static thermodynamic energy harvesting. Particularly, changing spontaneous polarization via out-of-plane uniform heat perturbations has been shown in solar pyroelectrics. However, these approaches present unequivocal inefficiency due to spatially coupled low temperature change and duration along the longitudinal direction. Here we demonstrate unconventional giant polarization ripples in transverse pyroelectrics, without increasing the total energy input, into electricity with an efficiency of 5-fold of conventional longitudinal counterparts. The non-uniform graded temperature variation arises from decoupled heat localization and propagation, leading to anomalous in-plane heat perturbation (29-fold) and enhanced thermal disequilibrium effects. This in turn triggers an augmented polarization ripple, fundamentally enabling unprecedented electricity generation performance. Notably, the device generates a power density of 38 mW m −2 at 1 sun illumination, which is competitive with solar thermoelectrics and ferrophotovoltaics. Our findings provide a viable paradigm, not only for universal practical pyroelectric heat harvesting but for flexible manipulation of transverse heat transfer towards sustainable energy harvesting and management.

Pyro-Phototronic Effect Enhanced MXene/ZnO Heterojunction Nanogenerator for Light Energy Harvesting

Abstract:The coupling of pyroelectricity, semiconductor, and optical excitation yields the pyro-phototronic effect, which has been extensively utilized in photodetectors. It can also enhance the performance of light energy harvesting nanogenerators. In this work, a pyro-phototronic effect-enhanced MXene/ZnO heterojunction nanogenerator has been successfully demonstrated, which can harvest broadband light energy (from deep UV to near-infrared) and still operate at 200 °C. The morphology of the ZnO layer and the MXene layer’s thickness have been further optimized for better light energy harvesting performance. For the optimized heterojunction nanogenerator, the responsivity can be improved from ~0.2 mA/W to ~3.5 mA/W by pyro-phototronic effect, under 0.0974 mW/cm2 365 nm UV illumination. Moreover, the coupling of pyro-phototronic and piezo-phototronic effects in MXene/ZnO heterojunction nanogenerators has been investigated. The results indicate that only a small tensile strain could improve the nanogenerator’s performance. The working mechanisms have been carefully analyzed, and the modulation of piezoelectric charges on the Schottky barrier height is found to be the key factor. These results demonstrate the enormous potential of the pyro-phototronic effect in light energy harvesting nanogenerators and illustrate the coupling of pyro-phototronic and piezo-phototronic effects for further performance improvement.

Abstract:In this paper, a facile strategy for a hybrid photothermal structure that can efficiently manage solar heat is reported. The hybrid photothermal structure consists of a Cr/MgF 2 multilayer structure absorber and a poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA)-graphene heat reservoir that prevents the absorbed heat from being lost through radiation or convection. It exhibits a quite high light absorption of approximately 80% over a wavelength range of 0.5–2.5 μm. The thermal conductivity and thermal diffusivity are improved by about 47% according to the addition of graphene to PMMA, effectively transferring the stored heat to a place where it can be used efficiently. When the hybrid photothermal structure was applied to the hot zone of a thermoelectric generator, the output voltage is improved by 2.74 times compared to the device with only the light absorber. In addition, the difference between the high and low temperatures reached up to approximately 27 K.

Abstract:Photocatalysis, in which semiconductors are used to harvest light and produce charge carrier derivatives, has been widely valued as a promising sustainable technique. However, due to the poor separation efficiency of photogenerated electron-hole pairs, the overall energy conversion efficiency sticks at 1%, which is far from the desired industrial application demand of 10%. Very recently, pyroelectric catalysis technology with asymmetric positive/negative charge centers has emerged, which is hoped to play a key role in alleviating energy crisis and environmental problems. With pyroelectric catalysts introduced into photocatalysts, its internal spontaneous polarization electric field can effectively promote the separation of photogenerated carriers, thus improving the photocatalytic performance. Therefore, pyroelectric photocatalysis is expected to break the widely recognized energy efficiency threshold of 10% for scale-up industrial implementation of photocatalytic technique. Nevertheless, there is still a huge cognitive gap between fundamental theory and practice in the design, characterizations, and application of pyroelectric photocatalysts. Hence, a comprehensive review is conducted to understand the state-of-the-art progress in pyroelectric photocatalysis. The polarization treatment, evaluation parameters and the corresponding atomic force microscopy and X-ray diffraction characterization for the identification of high-efficiency pyroelectric materials are also elaborated. We also propose five potential directions for large-scale applications of pyroelectric photocatalysis, including multi-step cascade reactions, controllable reactions, excitable biomaterials, hazardous waste treatment, and water wave energy collection devices.

Abstract:Recently, growing interest in self-powered devices has led to the invention of new energy conversion devices. Photo-thermoelectric generators (PTEGs) have rapidly developed for their ability to harvest both light and thermal energy, but these devices are overly dependent on the continuity of energy input and cannot sustain output in an emergency situation. In the current study, poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) polystyrene sulfonate (PEDOT:PSS)/graphene oxide (GO)/graphene nanosheets (GNPs)/polyethylene glycol (PEG) phase-change composites (PCCs) were prepared with freeze-drying and vacuum-filling processes to acquire materials suitable for imparting energy storage characteristics to PTEGs. The melting and crystallization enthalpies of the PCCs fabricated based on the PEDOT:PSS/GO/GNP aerogels can reach 211.5 and 207.6 J g-1, respectively, which increase by nearly 5% compared with pure PEG, and the growth rate of thermal conductivity of the composites is as high as 262.7% (1.12 W m-1 K-1). Meanwhile, the excellent photothermal properties and high-temperature shape stability that pure PEG does not possess can also be imparted to PCCs by the aerogels. The PTEG assembled with PCCs and thermoelectric components can achieve a continuous output of over 1500 s after 300 s of light irradiation. After integrating the output of the device during the lamp on/off period, it is found that the total output of the device during the light-off period (8.4 V and 9.6 mW) can far exceed its total output during the light-on period (2.7 V and 4.4 mW). This work provides guidance for modulating the performance of PCCs and giving PTEGs the ability to operate under emergency or extremely harsh conditions and the prepared PTEGs are highly promising for practical use.
