Abstract:The practical application of lithium-sulfur (Li-S) batteries is seriously hindered by severe lithium polysulfide (LiPS) shuttling and sluggish electrochemical conversions. Herein, the Co9S8/MoS2 heterojunction as a model cathode host material is employed to discuss the performance improvement strategy and elucidate the catalytic mechanism. The introduction of sulfur vacancies can harmonize the chemisorption of the heterojunction component. Also, sulfur vacancies induce the generation of radicals, which participate in a liquidus disproportionated reaction to reduce the accumulation of liquid LiPSs. To assess the conversion efficiency from liquid LiPSs to solid Li2S, a new descriptor calculated from basic cyclic voltammetry curves, nucleation transformation ratio, is proposed.
Accelerated Ion‐Electron Transport in Bi‐Heterostructures Constructed Based on Ohmic Contacts for Efficient Bi‐Directional Catalysis of Lithium‐Sulfur Batteries

Abstract:In this study, bi‐heterostructures with ohmic contact constructs for accelerated ion‐electron transport are synthesized by hydrothermal and electrostatic self‐assembly for accelerated ion‐electron transport, and electrochemical tests revealed that MXene‐VS4‐SnS2 is an efficient bi‐directional catalyst for polysulfides. Although lithium‐sulfur batteries have satisfactory theoretical specific capacity and energy density, they are difficult to further commercialize due to the shuttle effect of soluble polysulfides and slow sulfur oxidation kinetics. Based on this, in this work, the catalyst MXene‐VS4‐SnS2 (MVS), a dual heterostructured catalyst with ohmic contacts, is prepared by a one‐step hydrothermal method and electrostatic self‐adsorption for lithium‐sulfur battery cathode materials. Experimental and theoretical results show that the ohmic contact induces spontaneous charge rearrangement, resulting in the formation of a fast charge transfer pathway at the MVS heterojunction interface, which helps to reduce the energy barrier for polysulfide reduction and Li2S oxidation during the discharge/charge process. In addition, the inherent sulfophilicity of VS4 and SnS2 promotes the conversion of S species, while the pleated MXene nanosheets not only provide a highly conductive network for the active sulfur but also retain a rich internal space to maintain the integrity of the cathode structure during the continuous cycling process. As a result, the MVS cathode exhibits excellent electrochemical performance even under high sulfur loading. The integration of excellent performance with a facile synthesis process provides a promising approach for designing highly efficient electrocatalysts suitable for the energy field.

Abstract:Accelerated conversion by catalysis is a promising way to inhibit shuttling of soluble polysulfides in lithium–sulfur (Li–S) batteries, but most of the reported catalysts work only for one direction sulfur reaction (reduction or oxidation), which is still not a root solution since fast cycled use of sulfur species is not finally realized. A bidirectional catalyst design, oxide–sulfide heterostructure, is proposed to accelerate both reduction of soluble polysulfides and oxidation of insoluble discharge products (e.g., Li2S), indicating a fundamental way for improving both the cycling stability and sulfur utilization. Typically, a TiO2–Ni3S2 heterostructure is prepared by in situ growing TiO2 nanoparticles on Ni3S2 surface and the intimately bonded interfaces are the key for bidirectional catalysis. For reduction, TiO2 traps while Ni3S2 catalytically converts polysulfides. For oxidation, TiO2 and Ni3S2 both show catalytic activity for Li2S dissolution, refreshing the catalyst surface. The produced sulfur cathode with TiO2–Ni3S2 delivers a low capacity decay of 0.038% per cycle for 900 cycles at 0.5C and specially, with a sulfur loading of 3.9 mg cm−2, achieves a high capacity retention of 65% over 500 cycles at 0.3C. This work unlocks how a bidirectional catalyst works for boosting Li–S batteries approaching practical uses.

Leveraging doping strategies and interface engineering to enhance catalytic transformation of lithium polysulfides for high-performance lithium-sulfur batteries

Abstract:The commercialization of lithium-sulfur (Li-S) batteries has faced challenges due to the shuttle effect of soluble intermediate polysulfides and the sluggish kinetics of sulfur redox reactions. In this study, a synergistic catalyst medium was developed as a high-performance sulfur cathode material for Li-S batteries. Termed A/R-TiO2@ Ni-N-MXene, this sulfur cathode material features an in-situ derived anatase-rutile homojunction of TiO2 nanoparticles on Ni-N dual-atom-doped MXene nanosheets. Using in-situ transmission electron microscopy (TEM) technique, we observed the growth process of the homojunction for the first time confirming that homojunctions facilitated charge transfer, while dual-atom doping offered abundant active sites for anchoring and converting soluble polysulfides. Theoretical calculations and experiments showed that these synergistic effects effectively mitigated the shuttle effect, leading to improved cycling performance of Li-S batteries. After 500 cycles at a 1C rate, Li-S batteries using A/R-TiO2@Ni-N-MXene as cathode materials exhibited stable and highly reversible capacity with a capacity decay of only 0.056 % per cycle. Even after 150 cycles at a 0.1C rate, a high-capacity retention rate of 62.8 % was achieved. Additionally, efficient sulfur utilization was observed, with 1280.76 mA h/g at 0.1C, 694.24 mA h/g at 1C, alongside a sulfur loading of 1.5-2 mg/cm2. The effective strategy based on homojunctions showcases promise for designing high-performance Li-S batteries.
Rational design of bidirectional electrocatalysts and accelerated sulfur redox reactions in lithium-sulfur batteries

Abstract:Lithium–sulfur (Li–S) batteries have emerged as one of the most promising energy storage solutions. However, its commercial application still faces a significant challenge: the sluggish redox reaction kinetics of the reversible lithium polysulfide (LiPS) conversion process. The strategic design of cathode structures and electrocatalysts can help accelerate polysulfide conversion. In this study, systematic density functional theory (DFT) calculations predict that the incorporation of platinum (Pt) nanoparticles, as a model electrocatalyst, into biomass carbon materials can effectively promote the bidirectional conversion of polysulfides. Detailed kinetic analyses reveal that Pt-doped biomass carbon materials possess exceptional electrocatalytic abilities for Li 2 S nucleation and dissociation. These findings are further elucidated by ex situ X–ray photoelectron spectroscopy measurements, elucidating the bidirectional mechanism of Pt. The sulfur cathode delivers a remarkable specific discharge capacity of 1386.9 mAh g –1 at 0.1 C. Even more impressive is its potential for practical applications, exemplified by a high initial capacity of 1218.7/1015.3 mAh g −1 and excellent cycling stability under a high sulfur loading of 4.5/7.5 mg cm −2 , which achieved substantial capacity retention (83.9/81.1%) after 100 cycles. This bidirectional electrocatalysis, achieved through the synergy of metal with biomass carbon materials, presents an attractive approach for advancing Li–S systems.

Abstract:Designing heterostructure electrocatalysts synergizing highly polar component and conductive matrix hold great promise to regulate lithium polysulfides (LiPSs) toward high−performance Li−S batteries based on anchoring−diffusion−conversion mechanism. Nevertheless, performance ceiling exists, restrict severely by the significant LiPSs diffusion barrier, which inevitably decrease the conversion efficiency of LiPSs. Amorphization can not only promote the diffusion of LiPSs on catalyst surface but also induce the modulation of surface electronic states and strengthen the adsorption toward LiPSs, in comparison with crystalline counterpart. Herein, crystalline Mo2C−amorphous MoO3 heterostructure grown on nitrogen doped carbon nanosheets is meticulously designed as an efficient sulfur immobilizer and promoter through a facile oxygen plasma treatment strategy. With the integrated advantage of improved adsorption and facilitated diffusion of LiPSs by amorphous MoO3, superior LiPSs redox kinetics by the catalytic effect of conductive Mo2C, and long-range electron transfer network arising from nitrogen doped carbon nanosheets, the assembled battery based on the as-developed modified separator endows excellent electrochemical performance and satisfactory cycling stability. This work provides an easy route to synergistic regulate crystallinity and heterogeneous interfaces of multifunctional catalysts for high energy density Li−S batteries.

Abstract:Designing electrochemical catalysts has become a research hotspot due to their accelerating the polysulfide conversion of the sulfur cathode to inhibit the "shuttle effect" in lithium-sulfur batteries. However, it is still a great challenge to design the heterogeneous selective electrochemical catalyst for inhibiting the "shuttle effect". Herein, nickel cobalt phosphide and cobalt phosphide as the heterogeneous catalyst active sites embedded in the nitrogen-doped hollow carbon nanocages (NiCoP@CoP/NC) are reported, used for multi-step and multi-phase sulfur electrode reaction, and it is found that metal-sulfur d-p hybridization can effectively indicate the intrinsic catalytic activity of metal site. Division of labor and cooperation of the bi-active NiCoP@CoP as heterogeneous catalysts propel the stepwise polysulfide conversion. NiCoP and CoP sites preferentially accelerate the long-chain polysulfide conversion reaction (S 8 ⇌LiPSs) and the short-chain polysulfide conversion reactions (LiPSs⇌Li 2 S), respectively. Moreover, the hollow and porous N-doped carbon structure can successfully suppress the volume effect and improve the conductivity of the sulfur cathode. The unique design can obtain an effective inhibition of the shuttle effect and rapid electrode reaction. As a result, Li-S batteries demonstrate a high initial capacity of 1063 mAh g −1 and a low-capacity decay of 0.04% per cycle within 1000 cycles. Synergistic Construction of Efficient Heterostructure Electrocatalysis for High-Performance Lithium–Sulfur Batteries

Abstract:Since a sluggish conversion reaction and shuttling of polysulfides have been barriers to high-performance Li–S batteries, it is particularly critical to establish nanostructured electrocatalysts with high specific surface area and electron conductivity, an excellent anchoring capability, and long-term durability. Herein, a robust binary synergistic MoS2/MXene heterostructure is proposed by the homogeneous growth of MoS2 on an MXene substrate. Due to the hierarchical structure and strong interfacial coupling effect, the binary synergistic MoS2/MXene heterostructure not only suppresses the restacking of MoS2 and MXene nanosheets but also provides abundant active sites to capture polysulfides and catalyze its conversion reaction. Typically, polysulfides are immobilized by MoS2 nanosheets; then, the anchored polysulfides are rapidly transferred from MoS2 to MXene via heterointerfaces. The MXene surface is endowed with abundant oxygen terminations, which accelerates the polysulfide conversion kinetics to a great extent. Therefore, the assembled Li–S battery delivers a reversible capacity of 981 mA h g–1 at 0.5 C after 300 cycles. Even at high rate of 5 C, capacity is still maintained at an excellent level of 408 mA h g–1 after 500 cycles with a Coulombic efficiency of 96.5%. Even more fascinating, at 0.2 C, the MoS2/MXene cathode can realize a high sulfur loading of 4.0 mg cm–2 and with capacities of 608 mA h g–1 over 500 cycles, which will promote the practical applications of Li–S batteries.

Abstract:A self‐supported CC@V‐W2N/WC1‐x sulfur electrocatalyst with rich heterointerfaces and vanadium doping that is directly grown on carbon cloth substrate is creatively constructed for Li‐S batteries. Integrated experimental and theoretical results confirm that the CC@V‐W2N/WC1‐x can tandemly catalyze the complicated sulfur reduction reaction. This work provides new inspiration for the design of tandem electrocatalysts for Li‐S battery system. The intrinsically sluggish sulfur reduction reaction kinetics and serious shuttle effect of soluble lithium polysulfides (LiPSs) severely impede the practical commercialization of lithium‐sulfur (Li‐S) batteries. Herein, self‐supported tungsten nitride and carbide heterostructures with vanadium doping that are directly grown on carbon cloth substrate (CC@V‐W2N/WC1‐x) are creatively designed for Li‐S batteries, which can tandemly catalyze the liquid–liquid conversion and liquid–solid conversion of polysulfide intermediate free of any interference from polymer binders and conductive additives. Noteworthy, the rich heterointerfaces and vanadium doping are beneficial for rapid charge transfer, strong chemical adsorption toward LiPSs, massive exposed catalytically active sites, and remarkable catalytic activities. Consequently, Li‐S batteries assembled with the CC@V‐W2N/WC1‐x/S cathodes exhibit high sulfur utilization, superior rate capability, and decent long‐term cycling stability. Furthermore, experimental analyses and theoretical calculations jointly substantiate that the V‐W2N component is more effective in catalyzing the conversion of long‐chain LiPSs, while the V‐WC1‐x benefits the favorable Li2S deposition kinetics. More importantly, the Li‐S pouch cells are also fabricated to demonstrate their feasibility for practical applications. This work not only highlights the significance of tandem catalysis on the consecutive conversion of LiPSs but also provides a feasible avenue for developing highly efficient electrocatalysts toward high‐performance Li‐S batteries.

Feasible Catalytic-Insoluble Strategy Enabled by Sulfurized Polyacrylonitrile with In Situ Built Electrocatalysts for Ultrastable Lithium–Sulfur Batteries

Abstract:To date, elemental sulfur has been considered as a prospective cathode material for exploring high-energy power systems with low cost and sustainability. However, its practical commercialization has been impeded by inherent drawbacks of notorious capacity decay, unsatisfied insulating nature, and sluggish conversion chemistry. To address these issues, for the first time, freestanding nanofibrous networks with hierarchical nanostructures are facilely constructed by inlaying electrocatalytic bimetallic chalcogenides (FexMn1-xS nanoparticles) into conductive graphene nanosheet (GN)-doped sulfurized polyacrylonitrile (SPAN) fiber matrices. Covalent-bonded SPAN featuring an insoluble mechanism serves as a reliable cathode substrate with enhanced electrostability and high sulfur utilization, while high-surface-area GN dopants promote conductivity improvement and rapid electron transfer. Meanwhile, the results prove that sulfiphilic FexMn1-xS nanoparticles with abundant electrochemically active sites facilitate construction of uniform deposition interfaces and efficient electrocatalysis conversion toward lithium polysufides. This feasible catalytic-insoluble cathode strategy drives the Li-S battery, which exhibits excellent electrochemical performances with a remarkable reversible discharge capacity of 967 mA h g-1 and a capacity retention of 623 mA h g-1 after 500 cycles. Moreover, the corresponding lithiation/delithiation mechanisms are systematically investigated through complementary morphological and spectral analyses, providing valuable insights into advanced metal-sulfur batteries.

Investigating the Electrocatalysis of Ti3C2/Carbon Hybrid in Polysulfide Conversion of Lithium-Sulfur Batteries.

Abstract:Despite the lithium-sulfur batteries are regarded as the promising next-generation rechargeable battery systems owning to the high theoretical specific capacity (1675 mAh g-1) and energy density (2600 Wh kg-1), several issues such as poor electrical conductivity, sluggish redox kinetics, and severe "shuttle effect" in electrodes still hinder their practical application. MXenes, novel two-dimensional materials with high conductivity, regulable interlayer spacing, and abundant functional groups, are widely applied in energy storage and conversion fields. In this work, a Ti3C2/carbon hybrid with expanded interlayer spacing is synthesized by one-step heat treatment in molten potassium hydroxide. The subsequent experiments indicate that the as-prepared Ti3C2/carbon hybrid can effectively regulate polysulfide redox conversion and have strong chemisorption interaction to polysulfides. Consequently, the Ti3C2/carbon based sulfur cathode boosts the performance in working lithium-sulfur battery, in terms of ultrahigh initial discharge capacity (1668 mA h g-1 at 0.1 C), excellent rate performance (520 mA h g-1 at 5 C), outstanding capacity retention of 530 mAh g-1 after 500 cycles at 1 C with low capacity fade rate of 0.05 % per cycle, and stable Coulombic efficiency (nearly 99 %). The above results indicate that this composite with high catalytic activity is a potential host material for further high-performance lithium-sulfur batteries.

Designing a Highly Efficient Polysulfide Conversion Catalyst with Paramontroseite for High-Performance and Long-Life Lithium-Sulfur Batteries

Abstract:Numerous efforts have been made to design the cathode of Li-S batteries to enhance reversible capacity and long-term cycling stability. However, challenges remain in achieving high electronic/ionic conductivity and suppressing the shuttle effect, especially for cathodes with high sulfur loading. Here we report a 3D free-standing hierarchical structure of VO2(P) (paramontroseite VO2) nanoparticles grown on nitrogen-doped carbon nanotube (NCNT) arrays as a catalytic host for high-performance sulfur cathodes. In this architecture, the VO2(P) nanoparticles function as catalysts to oxidize the LiPS to produce thiosulfate due to the strong chemical interaction. Furthermore, thiosulfates act as a mediator to catenate long-chain LiPS together and convert short-chain Li2S2/Li2S and surface-bound polythionate complexes. Accordingly, the VO2(P)-NCNT/S cathode exhibits excellent performance with high discharge capacity output (approximate to 1200 mA h g(-1) at 0.2 C), stable long-term cycling (approximate to 67% retention at 2 C for 500 cycles), and high sulfur loading cycling (initial areal capacity of 10.2 mA h cm(-2) at 0.2 C for 200 cycles). This nanostructure catalytic cathode with high sulfur loadings, as well as stable cycling performances, is attractive for developing practically useable Li-S batteries.
Vanadium nitride nanocrystals decorated ultrathin, N-rich and hierarchically porous carbon nanosheets as superior polysulfides mediator for stable lithium-sulfur batteries

Abstract:The diligent exploitation of high-efficiency polysulfides mediators have exhibited enormous prospects to promote the cycling performance of lithium-sulfur (Li–S) batteries with desirable sulfur loading and high sulfur utilization efficiency. Herein, we craft an elaborated catalyst of ultrafine vanadium nitride nanocrystals confined hierarchically porous, ultrathin nitrogen-doped carbon nanosheets (denoted as ) via a simple approach. Owing to the highly conductive porous carbon framework integrated with enriched V – N – C active sites, well-heterostructured can actively favor the entrapping – adsorption – catalytic conversion of the polysulfides intermediates for boosted surface redox kinetics. As the separator interlayer, dedicates to high-performance Li–S batteries with high discharge capacities (1594.8 mAh g −1 at 0.1 C), excellent rate capabilities (766.5 mAh g −1 at 5.0 C) and exceptional cyclic durability by a slight decay of 0.067% per cycle upon 500 cycles at 1.0 C. Interestingly, two cycled Li–S batteries after 100 cycles at 0.5 C can be connected to charge a daily smartphone. Even under elevated sulfur loading of 4.5 mg cm −2 and lean electrolyte of 8 μL mg −1 , the assembled Li–S battery still maintains a stable cycling performance. The cost-effective catalyst could offer a viable avenue to construct applicable sulfur catalysts for advanced Li–S batteries.

Abstract:The practical uses of lithium-sulfur batteries are greatly restricted by the sluggish reaction kinetics of lithium polysulfides (LiPSs), leading to low sulfur utilization and poor cyclic stability. Using the heterostructure catalysts is an effective way to solve the above problems, but how to further enhance the conversion efficiency and avoid the surface passivation by the insulative Li2S has not been well investigated. Herein, a heterostructure catalyst with rich heterointerfaces was prepared by modifying Mo2N microbelt with SnO2 nanodots. The formed rich interfaces with high accessibility act as the profitable nucleation sites guiding the Li2S 3D growth, which avoids the catalyst surface passivation and facilitates the LiPS conversion. The introduction of SnO2 nanodots also enhances the LiPS adsorption. Thus, the assembled battery with the above catalyst as the cathode additive shows a high capacity of 738.3 mAh g-1 after 550 cycles at 0.5 C with an ultralow capacity decay of 0.025% per cycle. Even with high sulfur loading of 9.0 mg cm-2, good cyclic stability is also achieved at 0.5 C with a low E/S ratio of 5 μL mgs-1. This work shows an effective way to enhance the LiPS conversion kinetics and guide Li2S deposition in Li-S batteries.
Manipulating Redox Kinetics of Sulfur Species Using Mott–Schottky Electrocatalysts for Advanced Lithium–Sulfur Batteries

Abstract:Lithium–sulfur (Li–S) batteries suffer from sluggish sulfur redox reactions under high-sulfur-loading and lean-electrolyte conditions. Herein, a typical heterostructure composed of Co nanoparticles and a semiconductive N-doped carbon matrix is designed as a model Mott–Schottky catalyst to exert the electrocatalytic effect on sulfur electrochemistry. Theoretical and experimental results reveal the redistribution of charge and a built-in electric field at the heterointerface, which are critical to lowering the energy barrier of polysulfide reduction and Li2S oxidation in the discharge and charge process, respectively. With Mott–Schottky catalysts, the Li–S batteries display an ultrahigh capacity retention of 92.1% and a system-level gravimetric energy density of 307.8 Wh kg–1 under high S loading (10.73 mg cm–2) and lean electrolyte (E/S = 5.9 μL mgsulfur–1) conditions. The improved lithium-sulfur batteries deliver 800 mAh g(-1) at 2 C and an ultralow capacity decay of 0.028% per cycle over 1000 cycles at 2 C. Even with a high sulfur loading of 5.1 mg cm(-2), the capacity retention of 93% after 200 cycles is still maintained. This work sheds new insights into the design of high-performance catalysts with manipulated chemical components and tailored surface chemistry to regulate polysulfides in Li-S batteries.

Abstract:Currently, severe shuttle effects and sluggish conversion kinetics are the main obstacles to the advancement of lithium-sulfur (Li-S) batteries. Modification of the battery separator by a catalyst is a promising approach to tackle these problems, but simultaneously obtaining rich catalytic active sites, high conductivity, and remarkable stability remains a great challenge. Herein, a flower-like MXene/MoS2/SnS@C heterostructure as the functional intercalation of Li-S batteries was prepared for accelerating the synergistic adsorption-electrocatalysis of sulfur conversion. The MXene skeleton constructs a three-dimensional conductive network that anchors polysulfides and enhances charge transfer. Meanwhile, the MoS2/SnS has rich active sites for accelerating polysulfide conversion, leading to excellent electrochemical performances. A battery with MXene/MoS2/SnS@C displays an extraordinary capacity of 836.1 mAh g(-1) over 200 cycles at 0.5C and demonstrates a remarkable cycling stability with a capacity attenuation of approximately 0.051% per cycle during 1000 cycles at 2C. When the sulfur loading reaches 5.1 mg cm(-2), the capacity still maintains 722.4 mAh g(-1) over 50 cycles. This research proposes a novel strategy to design stable catalysts for Li-S batteries with an extended lifespan.

Abstract:The shuttle effect derived from diffusion of lithium polysulfides (LiPSs) and sluggish redox kinetic bring about poor cycling stability and low utilization of sulfur, which have always been the key challenging issues for the commercial application of lithium-sulfur (Li-S) batteries. Rational design of cathode materials to catalyze Li 2 S dissociation/nucleation processes is an appealing and valid strategy to develop high-energy practical Li-S batteries. Herein, considering the synergistic effect of bidirectional catalysis on LiPSs conversion and enhanced chemical immobilization for LiPSs by heteroatom doping, Pt nanoparticles loaded on nitrogen-doped carbon spheres (Pt/NCS composites) were constructed as cathode materials. According to the dynamic evolution of Pt catalysts and sulfur species, Pt 0 and Pt 2+ species were identified as active species for the accelerated dissociation and nucleation of Li 2 S, respectively. Meanwhile, in-situ Raman results demonstrated the expedited conversion of sulfur species resulted from bidirectional catalysis of active Pt species, corresponding to boosted redox kinetics. Consequently, Pt/NCS cathode exhibited improved long-term cyclability with high initial capacity, along with enhanced rate capability. This work provides a facile approach to construct cathode materials with bidirectional catalysis on Li 2 S dissociation/nucleation, and sheds light on a more global understanding of the catalytic mechanism of metal catalysts during LiPSs conversion.

Abstract:Polysulfide shutting between cathode and anode and sluggish redox of solid-liquid-solid conversion largely impede the commercial applications of lithium-sulfur (Li–S) batteries. Herein, a novel V2O3/VN heterostructure has been designed as an efficient adsorbent and catalyst to promote polysulfide trapping and redox kinetics. Such synchronous advantages of each part of V2O3/VN can efficiently alleviate shuttling and accelerate polysulfide conversion, thus improve electrochemical performances. Benefited from this synergistic effect, the assembled full cells with V2O3/VN heterostructure exhibit an initial capacity of about 1100 mAh g−1 at 0.1C and an outstanding rate performance of 612 mAh g−1 at 2C. After 100 cycling tests at 0.2C, the specific capacity still maintains about 670 mAh g−1. Our approach would provide a new viewpoint of designing efficient sulfur additives to improve the redox kinetics for high-performance lithium-sulfur batteries.
