Abstract:Nano-gold( NG) was electrochemically deposited onto an ordered mesoporous carbon( OMC)modified glassy carbon electrode surface. L-Cysteine( L-Cys) was self-assembled to the NG modified electrode surface to fabricate an ordered mesoporous carbon / nano-gold / L-cysteine( OMC / NG / L-Cys) modified electrode.The structure of OMC and the morphology of OMC / NG / L-Cys modified electrodes were characterized by transmission electron microscope and scanning electron microscope,respectively. Electrochemical behavior of copper( II) at the modified electrode was investigated. Experimental conditions for copper( II) determination were optimized. Under the optimized conditions,peak current was found to be linearly related with copper( II)concentration in the range of 0. 05 ~ 6. 0 μmol / L with a detection limit of 0. 30 nmol / L( S / N = 3). The developed method was used to determine copper( II) in river water samples,recoveries were in the range from92. 7% to 101. 6%.
Development of a new electrochemical method for the determination of copper(ii) at trace levels in environmental and food samples

Abstract:This paper presents the fabrication of a new modified carbon paste electrode (CPE) with N 1-hydroxy-N 1,N 2-diphenylbenzamidine (HDPBA) and functionalized multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) (HDPBA-MWCNTs/CPE) for highly sensitive and selective determination of Cu(ii) using the square wave anodic stripping voltammetry (SWASV) technique. The fabricated electrode was characterized using various spectroscopic techniques to study its morphological, structural, and electrochemical properties. The accumulation of Cu(ii) on the surface of HDPBA-MWCNTs/CPE was done in 0.1 M ammonium chloride (NH4Cl, pH 5) solution at an applied potential of -0.70 V versus Ag/AgCl for 180 s, followed by electrochemical stripping in the positive scan of the voltammetry after a resting time of 10 s. The developed HDPBA-MWCNTs/CPE was found to be highly selective, sensitive and reproducible. At optimal conditions of the experiment, the proposed method exhibited a very low limit of detection (0.0048 nM Cu(ii)), a wide linear dynamic range (0.00007-1.5000 μM Cu(ii)), and good reproducibility with relative standard deviation (RSD) value of 3.7%. The effect of various foreign ions on the voltammetric response of Cu(ii) was investigated and the electrode was found to be highly selective to Cu(ii). The practical applicability of the proposed HDPBA-MWCNTs/CPE was studied by applying the electrode for the quantification of Cu(ii) contents in environmental water (wastewater and tap water), soft drink (Fanta and Sprite), and food supplement (commercially available multi-mineral/vitamin tablets) samples. The present method was validated with atomic absorption spectrometry (AAS). The results found from the two methods are in good agreement with a 95% confidence level.

Abstract:Poly(2-amino-4-thiazoleacetic acid)/multiwalled carbon nanotubes modified glassy carbon electrodes obtained by electropolymerization of 2-amino-4-thiazoleacetic acid, were used for the voltammetric determination of copper ions. The voltammetric response of copper ions at poly(2-amino-4-thiazoleacetic acid)/multiwalled carbon nanotubes modified glassy carbon electrodes was evaluated by differential pulse stripping voltammetry. The peak currents were linearly dependent on the concentrations of the copper ions in the range from 7.0×10−7M to 5.0×10−5M, with a coefficiency of 0.9987. The detection limit is 5.0×10−10M calculated for a signal-to-noise ratio of 3 (S/N=3). And it could be used for the simultaneous determination of copper and cadmium ions. The proposed method was successfully applied to the determination of copper ions in natural water. The concentration of Cu2+ was calculated to be 2.0×10−5M by standard addition method. The recovery rate was 94%.

Abstract:A new chemically modified carbon paste electrode (CMCPE) based on N, N' -disalicyli-denehexameythylenediaminate Cu(II) complex (CuSALHMN) has been developed for determination of Cu2+ in real samples. The performance of this electrode was investigated using potentiometric measurements. The developed sensor exhibits a good linear response of 31.2 ± 1.0 mV per decade over the concentration range of 4.1 × 10−7−1.0 × 10−2 M. It has a very low limit of detection, 6.2 × 10−8 M (3.9 ppb), with response time less than 12 s. The proposed electrode revealed very good selectivities with respect to alkali, alkaline earth and some transition metal ions and could be used in pH range of 4.0–6.5. This modified electrode was successfully applied as an indicator electrode for potentiometric titration of Cu2+ with EDTA and for direct determination of copper in multivitamin tablets and tap water.

Abstract:A novel copper(II)-selective electrode was produced based on a molecular deposition technique in which water-soluble copper phthalocyanine tetrasulfonate was alternatively deposited with a bipolar pyridine salt (PyC6BPC6Py) on a 3-mercaptopropionic acid modified Au electrode. The potentiometric response is independent on pH of the solution between pH 1 and 5, while it is dependent on the nature of the medium. The electrode has a linear dynamic range between 1 × 10−5 and 0.1 mol 1−1 with a Nernstian slope of 29 mV/decade concentration and a detection limit of 7 × 10−6 mol 1−1 in acetate buffer (0.2 mol 1−1, pH 4.5). Except for Fe2+, Fe3+ and Co2+, other common inorganic cations do not interfere in the determination of copper(II). The electrode has the advantages of low resistance, short conditioning time and fast response.

Abstract:A groundbreaking optical sensing membrane has been engineered for the accurate assessment of copper ions. The pliable poly(vinyl chloride) membrane is formulated through the integration of sodium tetraphenylborate (Na-TPB), 4-(2-hydroxy-4-nitro azobenzene)-2-methyl-quinoline (HNAMQ), and tri-n-octyl phosphine oxide (TOPO), in conjunction with o-nitrophenyl octyl ether (o-NPOE). The sensor membrane undergoes a thorough investigation of its composition to optimize performance, revealing that HNAMQ serves a dual role as both an ionophore and a chromoionophore. Simultaneously, TOPO contributes to enhancing the complexation of HNAMQ with copper ions. Demonstrating a linear range for Cu 2+ ions spanning from 5.0 × 10 −9 to 7.5 × 10 −6 M, the proposed sensor membrane showcases detection and quantification limits of 1.5 × 10 −9 and 5.0 × 10 −9 M, respectively. Rigorous assessments of potential interferences from other cations and anions revealed no observable disruptions in the detection of Cu 2+ . With no discernible HNAMQ leaching, the membrane demonstrates rapid response times and excellent durability. The sensor exhibits remarkable selectivity for Cu 2+ ions and can be regenerated through exposure to 0.05 M EDTA. Successful application of the sensor in determining the presence of Cu 2+ in biological (blood, liver and meat), soil, food (coffee, black tea, sour cherry juice, black currant, and milk powder) and environmental water samples underscores its efficacy.

Abstract:Background Environmental contamination by heavy metal ions has caused growing ecological and public health concerns. In this line, monitoring of copper toxicity gains importance due to its application in industrial, agricultural, domestic, medical and technological sectors. Although noteworthy breakthroughs were made, critical issues, such as portability, the need for well-trained personnel, costly/complex instrumentations, long response time, and the introduction of secondary contaminants, required attention. Hence, developing a low-cost, user-friendly, real-time, portable analytical platform for rapid and on-site analysis remained imperative. Solid-state colorimetric sensors have gained widespread popularity due to their low cost, ease of use, and brilliant sensitivity/selectivity. Results We have successfully unfolded an ultra-portable azomethine-infused structurally interwoven polymer monolith as the solid-state chromatic sensor for the quantitative naked-eye detection of ultra-trace Cu 2+ in industrial/environmental samples. For the sensor fabrication, non-hygroscopic conjugated Schiff-base receptors, namely N-(1E,2E)-3-(4-dimethylamino)phenyl)allylidene)-3-nitrobenzohydrazide (DPAN) and 2,3-bis(((1E,2E)-3-(4-dimethylamino)phenyl)allylidene)amino)malononitrile (DPAM) were synthesized in-house and voluminously immobilized onto a crack-free porous poly(4VP- co -EGDMA) monolith framework. The topological structure and functionalities of the porous polymer monolith and chromatic sensor materials were examined using various surface analytical and microscopic techniques. The excellent surface area and intriguing interlaced porosity features of the tailor-made polymer monolith facilitated the voluminous anchoring of the chromatic receptors for the selective/sensitive targeting of Cu 2+ . The DPAN and DPAM receptor-loaded poly(4VP- co -EGDMA) sensors exhibited a linear range of 0-150 μg/L, with the limit of detection of 0.11 and 0.13 μg/L for Cu 2+ , respectively. The sensors manifested Cu 2+ specificity amidst concomitant matrix ions to highlight the relevance of the proposed solid-state sensor. Significance The sensor materials offered a reliable approach for detecting and quantifying environmentally toxic and industrially pertinent Cu 2+ from aqueous samples, with the prospect of large-scale production, owing to the sensor's integrated compact design that can be reused for repeated real-time surveillance. The sensor's ability to sense/trap traces of toxic Cu 2+ can provide an early warning about the growing toxicity in a particular resource, thereby providing an opportunity to initiate remediation protocols for speedy decontamination.

Abstract:In the current study, we synthesized copper oxide nanostructures (CuO NSs) via a facile hydrothermal procedure. We characterized them with the help of scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and X-ray diffractometry (XRD). SEM study revealed that CuO NSs inherited nanoneedles-based flowering geometry with a porous nature, while XRD proved the crystalline nature of these NSs. When deposited on a glassy carbon electrode (GCE), these nanostructures are displayed as a sensitive sulfite detection tool in the sample matrix. The results showed that sodium hydroxide, with pH 10.0, was the best-supporting electrolyte among all electrolytes studied. The as-prepared sulfite sensor performed well in a linear working range of 10–100 μM sulfite with the low detection limit (LOD) of the amperometry technique used to evaluate the analytical performance of the electrode, such as a limit of 1.12 μM. The developed sensor was highly stable and reproducible, showing a relative standard deviation of 2.17% for 10 cycles. The sensor also exhibited more selectivity for sulfite in the presence of probable interfering species, including cyanide, sulfate, chloride, and nitrate. The findings further proved the CuO/GCE-Nafion-based sensor as a sensitive diagnostic tool for quantifying or monitoring health-hazardous sulfite in the environmental sample matrices.

Speech Perception in Children With Auditory Neuropathy/Dyssynchrony Managed With Either Hearing Aids or Cochlear Implants

Abstract:Objective: To evaluate speech perception skills in children with auditory neuropathy (AN)/auditory dyssynchrony (AD)-type hearing loss managed with either hearing aids or cochlear implants. Study Design: Prospective data collection in 3 subject groups: AN/AD children fitted with bilateral amplification, AN/AD children fitted with cochlear implant (in 1 or both ears), and a matched control group of implanted children with sensorineural hearing loss. Main Outcome Measure: Open-set monosyllabic words (consonant-nucleus-consonant). Results: Of the 10 implanted AN/AD children, 9 demonstrated significant speech discrimination (consonant-nucleus-consonant phoneme score ≥55%). Similar results were obtained for the aided AN/AD group. Findings for both AN/AD subject groups were poorer than those of the implanted sensorineural cohort. Conclusion: Cochlear implantation can offer useful hearing in subjects with AN/AD-type hearing loss. However, expectations for this group may need to be lower than for patients with peripheral (cochlear) loss.
Disposable electrochemical caffeine sensor based on screen-printed electrode modified with copper-metal organic framework and functionalized multi-walled carbon nanotubes nanocomposite

Abstract:This study introduces a disposable electrochemical sensor for measuring caffeine (CAF) based on a screen-printed electrode modified with a copper-based metal organic framework and multi-walled carbon nanotubes nanocomposite (Cu-MOF@f-MWCNTs/SPE). The f-MWCNTs improved the conductivity and specific surface area of the electrode, and the f-MWCNTs/SPE demonstrated excellent electrocatalytic activity toward CAF oxidation. Incorporating Cu-MOF with f-MWCNTs increased the number of active sites for CAF oxidation, leading to a significant increase in the oxidation current response of CAF. The morphology of the Cu-MOF@f-MWCNTs nanocomposite was observed by scanning electron microscopy. The electrochemical behavior of CAF on different electrode modifications was investigated using cyclic voltammetry and differential pulse voltammetry. The optimal detection conditions were also evaluated. The linear range of the developed sensor was from 0.010 to 1.50 mM, and the detection limit was 7.9 μM. The sensor showed selectivity against six possible interferences and achieved recoveries from 85.0 to 104.6% of CAF in black coffee samples. Hence, the proposed disposable CAF sensor could be used in real-world applications.

Abstract:Serum homocysteine (Hcy) is considered to be a reliable biomarker of cardiovascular, cerebrovascular and neurological diseases. Therefore, rapid, specific and sensitive measurement of homocysteine is crucial for prevention and diagnosis. Electrochemical methods, which benefit from simplicity, low-cost and quick response, have been widely utilized in the determination of targeted biomolecules. In this work, based upon a portable mini-potentiostat, a homocysteine electrochemical biosensor has been successfully developed combined with the modification of gold and manganese (IV) nanomaterials on multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) (denoted as Au@MnO 2 /MWCNTs) on screen-printed electrodes (SPEs). Due to the excellent electrochemical activity and catalytic capability of Au@MnO 2 /MWCNTs, the proposed electrochemical biosensor exhibited wide-linear range (5–125 μmol L −1 ), high sensitivity (0.01110 μA (μmol L −1 ) −1 ) and low detection limit (0.6173 μmol L −1 ) for homocysteine, requiring only 400 s to complete detection. It was effectively applied in the determination of serum homocysteine, and the results were consistent with those of an automated clinical chemistry analyzer. Furthermore, the simple and portable electrochemical device offers a promising manner for on-site analysis and home health monitoring.

Abstract:Introduction: In this study, a nanocomposite film was prepared by doping silver nanoparticles onto β-cyclodextrin-chitosan functionalized Reduced Graphene Oxide (RGO), denoted as Ag/ β-CD/CS/G nanocomposite. The average diameter of the Ag NPs was found to be 62±17 nm. Method: The fabricated composite was applied to monitor trace levels of copper ions in different industrial and environmental water samples. The morphology and microstructure of the fabricated sensor were extensively investigated using different techniques, including XRD, TGA, HR-TEM, FTIR, SEM, XPS, and EDX physicochemical techniques. For the electrochemical monitoring of Cu(II), the Ag/β-CD/CS/G nanocomposite electrode showed remarkable performance in terms of high sensitivity and a low limit of detection that was found to be 0.24 nmol L -1 . Result: The developed sensors showed a linear dynamic range from 10 -3 to 10 -8 mol L -1 with an R 2 of 0.99. The impacts of different electrochemical parameters, including medium pH, scanning rate, and interfering ions, were investigated. Conclusion: Furthermore, the fabricated modified electrode showed high efficiency for Cu(II) detection in groundwater samples.

A novel copper ion enhanced electrochemical DNA biosensor for the determination of epinephrine

Abstract:A novel electrochemical biosensor was developed for the detection of epinephrine (EP) by immobilizing double-strand DNA (dsDNA) bound with copper ions on a gold electrode (Cu2+/dsDNA/MCH/AuE). The electrochemical behavior of EP at Cu2+/dsDNA/MCH/AuE was examined, and the results demonstrated a significant enhancement in the electrocatalytic oxidation peak current of EP due to the formation of a stable G-Cu(II)-G sandwich structure between Cu2+ and guanine at the modified electrode. The modification process of the electrode was characterized by scanning electron microscopy, infrared spectroscopy, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, and differential pulse voltammetry. A study on the effect of pH in phosphate buffer solution on the electrochemical oxidation of EP indicated that the catalytic oxidation process was pH-dependent. A plot of catalytic current versus EP concentration exhibited a dual-linear relationship within two ranges: 1.0-12.5 μM and 12.5-1000.0 μM, with correlation coefficients of 0.995 and 0.997, respectively. The limit of detection was determined to be 47 nM (S/N = 3). According to the calculated Hill coefficient (0.99), it can be concluded that the electrocatalytic process followed the Michaelis-Menten kinetic mechanism. The maximum catalytic current Im was 25 μA, while the apparent Michaelis-Menten constant Km was 1.425 mM. These findings indicated excellent electrocatalytic activity of the modified electrode towards oxidation of EP. The developed biosensor successfully detected EP in spiked mouse serum as well as epinephrine hydrochloride injection with high selectivity, sensitivity, stability, and accuracy.

Abstract:To protect consumers from risks related to overexposure to sulfadiazine, total residues of this antibacterial agent in animal-origin foodstuffs not exceed international regulations. To this end, a new electrochemical sensor based on a molecularly imprinted polymer nanocomposite using overoxidized polypyrrole and copper nanoparticles for the detection of sulfadiazine is elaborated. After optimization of the preparation of the electrochemical sensors, their differential pulse voltammetric signal exhibits an excellent stability and reproducibility at 1.05 V, with a large linear range between 10−9 and 10−5 mol L−1 and a low detection limit of 3.1 × 10−10 mol L−1. The produced sulfadiazine sensor was successfully tested in real milk samples. The combination of the properties of the electrical conduction of copper nanoparticles with the properties of the preconcentration of the molecularly imprinted overoxidized polypyrrole allows for the highly sensitive detection of sulfadiazine, even in real milk samples. This strategy is new and leads to the lowest detection limit yet achieved, compared to those of the previously published sulfadiazine electrochemical sensors.

Abstract:In this work, an accurate, high sensitive and economy electrochemical sensor based on a carbon paste electrode provided by copper oxide nanoparticles (CuO-NP/CPE) was constructed. CuO-NP were obtained from the recycling of copper waste wires and analyzed using SEM and XRD measurements. The handmade electrode was used in actual pharmaceutical formulations for the determination of theophylline (TP). Using cyclic voltammetry (CV) and linear sweep voltammetry (LSV) methods, the output accuracy of the sensor against TP was explored. Different experimental conditions have been studied, such as different supporting electrolytes, pH, and scan rate. The results showed that while only one peak of oxidation was observed at 1.16 V, no reduction peaks were observed. The improved CuO-NP/CPE sensor showed supreme analytical rendering towards TP, with an anodic peak current rising by 4 μA compared to the unimproved CPE. The peak of oxidation current was linearly proportional to the concentration of TP from 4.0 to 70.0 nM, and the detection limit was determined to be 1.2 nM, which, relative to previous research using the same technology, was considered the lowest value ever. In addition, handmade CuO-NP/CPE showed high selectivity, stability, and good reproducibility in the presence of any interference. Therefore, it has been successfully used in actual pharmaceutical samples to assess TP. The data showed that the adjusted sensor significantly improved the detection of TP as well as accelerated the process of charge transfer on its surface with efficient reusability for eight successive measurements at 4 × 10−4 M of TP.Graphic Abstract

Abstract:An amperometric nitrite sensor is reported based on a screen-printed carbon electrode (SPCE) modified with copper(II)-benzene-1,4-dicarboxylate (Cu-BDC) frameworks and iron(III) oxide nanoparticles (Fe 2 O 3 NPs). First, copper(I) oxide (Cu 2 O) nanocubes were synthesized, followed by a solvothermal reaction between Cu 2 O and H 2 BDC to form square plate-like Cu-BDC frameworks. Then, Fe 2 O 3 NPs were electrodeposited on Cu-BDC frameworks using a potentiostatic method. The Fe 2 O 3 @Cu-BDC nanocomposite benefits from high conductivity and large active surface area, offering excellent electrocatalytic activity for nitrite oxidation. Under optimal amperometric conditions (0.55 V vs. Ag/AgCl), the sensor has a linear range of 1 to 2000 μM with a detection limit of 0.074 μM (S/N = 3) and sensitivity of 220.59 μA mM −1 cm −2 . The sensor also provides good selectivity and reproducibility (RSD = 1.91%, n = 5). Furthermore, the sensor exhibits long-term stability, retaining 91.4% of its original current after 4 weeks of storage at room temperature. Finally, assessing nitrite in tap and mineral water samples revealed that the Fe 2 O 3 @Cu-BDC/SPCE has a promising prospect in amperometric nitrite detection.
An ESIPT solvatochromic fluorescent and colorimetric probe for sensitive and selective detection of copper ions in environmental samples and cell lines

Abstract:Copper is one of the most important transition metals in our body for various physiological functions. An imbalance in the homeostasis of copper in our body can lead to various neurological disorders such as Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's, and Menkes disease. As a result, there is a need for the detection of excess copper present in the environment and the human system. In this work, we have designed a quinoline-based fluorescent/colorimetric probe (QHS) for rapid and selective detection of copper ions via quenching of fluorescence/color change from yellow to peach which is visible to the naked eye. The probe displayed high selectivity towards copper(II), i.e., Cu(II) in the presence of different metal analytes in water samples. The sensing mechanism of the probe was confirmed by NMR, HRMS, IR spectroscopy, and SEM. The detection limit of Cu(II) ions was found to be 0.493 μM which is lower than the tolerable limit of copper (20 μM) in drinking water as per the EPA. The probe was also utilized for the visualization of Cu(II) in cell lines. The probe was also demonstrated for its application in real-time detection of aqueous samples using portable paper strips.

Abstract:In this work, pivalic acid (pivH) molecule is employed for an electrochemical sensing of copper cations in an aqueous medium. For sensitive as well as selective potential sensor application, pivH was fabricated onto a glassy carbon electrode (GCE) facilitated by adhesive conducting binder, nafion, so as make it selective and effective electrochemical probe (pivH/Nafion/GCE) towards specific heavy metal cations. This newly fabricated pivH/Nafion/GCE reveals enhance electrochemical activity toward copper ions in the presence of other interfering heavy metal cations in phosphate buffer solution (PBS) of pH=7. The calibration plot was linear (r 2 = 0.9879) across broad linear dynamic range (LDR) spanning Cu 2+ concentration from 0.1 nM to 0.01 M. The sensitivity and detection limit was found to be 0.0212 × 10 −2 μAμM −1 cm −2 and 0.014 nM, respectively. So, this newly fabricated GCE as selective electrochemical probe offers a sensitive as well as selective detection of Cu 2+ cations in real environmental samples using a novel electrochemical, current–potential (I-V), approach, for the first time. Further, we explored pivalic acid for the preparation of new di-nuclear copper complex, [Cu 2 (piv) 4 (pivH) 2 ] (where piv = pivalate; pivH=pivalic acid) and characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) spectroscopy, elemental analysis and single crystal X-ray diffractometry. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations were carried out to confirm the interactions and these calculations well-support to experimental data. In case of deprotonated form of pivH, Molecular Electrostatic Potential (MEP) analysis exhibits electrostatic potential equals to −148.4 kcal/mol which suggest about the strong interaction of –COOH with copper centers. Similarly, interaction energies, the quantum theory of atoms in molecules (QTAIM) study and Natural Bond Orbital (NBO) analysis also favor to experimental work. Thus, this novel study demonstrates an excellent approach for highly selective and sensitive detection of Cu 2+ cations in short response time with low detection limit and good reproducibility by using I-V method based on newly designed pivH/Nafion/GCE as selective Cu 2+ cationic electrochemical sensor. The experimental data was compactable with theoretical calculations.

Abstract:A smartphone-assisted determination of copper ions is introduced by using a down-scaled microfluidic mixer. The system was coupled with a micro-column packed with a periodic mesoporous organosilica (PMO) material for preconcentration of copper ions. Copper ions were reduced to Cu(I) on-chip to selectively form an orange-colored complex with neocuproine. A novel Android-based software was made to determine the color change of the adsorbent by analyzing red-green-blue (RGB) components of images from the packed PMO material. Four porous framework materials with high porosity and chemical stability were synthesized and compared for the extraction of the Cu-neocuproine complex. The main parameters influencing the complex extraction efficiency were optimized. The analytical performance of the method showed limit of detection and quantification of 0.2 μg L −1 and 0.5 μg L −1 , respectively. The accuracy and precision of the method were determined as recovery > 92% and relative standard deviations < 5.2% at medium concentration level ( n = 5). Due to accumulation of the retained analyte in a single point and elimination of the stripping step, the RGB-based method showed sensitivity and precision higher than inductively coupled plasma-atomic emission spectrometry (ICP-AES) for determination of copper ions. To investigate the applicability of the method, six different water samples were analyzed. The t- test on the data showed that the method has no significant difference when compared with ICP-AES determination.
