Abstract:Various flexible SERS sensors have attracted widespread concern in performing the direct identification of the analytes adsorbed on arbitrary surfaces. Here, a sample method was proposed to integrate plasmonic nanoparticles into polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) to fabricate flexible substrate for the decoration of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs). The flexible SERS sensor based on AgNPs/AgNPs-PDMS offers highly sensitive Raman detection with enhancement factor up to 8.3 × 109, which can be attributed to the integrative effects from both the increase of the light absorption of the embedded AgNPs in PDMS substrate and the EM enhancement from the adjacent top-top, bottom-bottom and top-bottom AgNPs. After undergoing the cyclic mechanical deformation, the SERS substrate still maintains high mechanical stability and stable SERS signals. However, upon stretching the flexible substrate, there was an amusing phenomenon that SERS signals can be highly increased, which results from that the reduction of lateral nanogaps between top and bottom of the PDMS boundary strengthens the trigger of the plasmon coupling as demonstrated by the simulated result. This result reveals that the tuning and the coupling of the electromagnetic fields can be effectively controlled by the macroscopic mechanical solicitation. That will have an important significance for practical applications in strain-dependent sensors and detectors.
Scalable fabrication of silver covered polyurethane nanofibers as flexible SERS nanosensors for aflatoxin detection

Abstract:Flexible surface enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) nanosensors, constructed by integration of plasmonic nanostructures with polymeric substrates, have received increasing research interests for recent decades. When compared to abundant works on optimization of the plasmonic nanostructures, the research involving the influence of polymeric substrates on analytical performance of resultant flexible SESR nanosensors is unexpectedly limited. Herein, the ultra-thin silver layer has been deposited on the electrospun polyurethane (ePU) nanofibrous membranes via vacuum evaporation to prepare the flexible SRES nanosensors. Interestingly, we find that the molecular weight and polydispersion index of synthesized PU play important roles in regulating the fine morphology of electrospun nanofibers, which in turns determine the Raman enhancement of resultant flexible SERS nanosensors. Specifically, the optimized SERS nanosensor, obtained by evaporating 10 nm silver layer on top of nanofibers derived from electrospinning of PU with a weight-average molecular weight of 140,354 and polydispersion index of 1.26, enables label-free detection of the carcinogen of aflatoxin down to 0.1 nM. Thanks to its scalable fabrication and good sensitivity, the current work opens new way for design of cost-effective flexible SERS nanosensors for environmental monitoring and food security applications.

Abstract:Surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) spectroscopy affords a rapid, highly sensitive, and nondestructive approach for label-free and fingerprint diagnosis of a wide range of chemicals. It is of great significance to develop large-area, uniform, and environmentally friendly SERS substrates for in situ identification of analytes on complex topological surfaces. In this work, we demonstrate a biodegradable flexible SERS film via irreversibly and longitudinally stretching metal deposited biocompatible poly(ε-caprolactone) film. This composite film after stretching shows surprising phenomena: three-dimensional and periodic wave-shaped microribbons array embedded with a high density of nanogaps functioning as hot-spots at an average gap size of 20 nm and nanogrooves array along the stretching direction. The stretched polymer surface plasmon resonance film gives rise to more than 10 times signal enhancement in comparison with that of the unstretched composite film. Furthermore, the SERS signals with high uniformity exhibit good temperature stability. The polymer SPR film with excellent flexibility and transparency can be conformally attached onto arbitrary nonplanar surfaces for in situ detection of various chemicals. Our results pave a new way for next-generation flexible SERS detection means, as well as enabling its huge potentials toward green wearable devices for point-of-care diagnostics.
Large-Scale Flexible Surface-Enhanced Raman Scattering (SERS) Sensors with High Stability and Signal Homogeneity

Abstract:Flexible surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) sensors have attracted great attention as a portable and low-cost device for chemical and bio-detection. However, flexible SERS sensors tend to suffer low signal spatial homogeneity due to the uneven distribution of active plasmonic nanostructures (hot spots) and quick degradation of their sensitivity due to low adhesion of hot spots and flexible substrates during fast sampling. Herein, a large-area (20 × 20 cm2) polyimide (PI)-based SERS sensor is exploited for trace detection with high signal homogeneity and stability. The SERS sensor is constructed from PI through in situ growth of silver and gold core–shell nanoparticles ( NPs) based on chemical reduction and galvanic replacement processes. Benefiting from the abundant carboxyl groups on the surface-cleaved PI, densely and uniformly distributed NPs are successfully prepared on the film under ambient conditions. The high Raman enhancement factor (EF) (up to 1.07 × 107) and detection capability with low nanomolar (10–9 M) detection limits are obtained for this flexible SERS sensor. The uniform Raman signals in the random region show good signal homogeneity with a low variation of 8.7%. Moreover, the flexible SERS sensor exhibited superior efficiency and durability after storage for 30 days even after 500 cycles of mechanical stimuli (bending or torsion). The residue of pesticide thiram (tetramethylthiuram disulfide, TMTD) has been rapidly traced by direct sampling from the apple surface, and a sensitivity of 10 ng/cm2 for TMTD was achieved. Abstract:A new and facile way to synthesize a free-standing and flexible surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) substrate has been successfully developed, where high SERS-active Ag dimers or aligned aggregates are assembled within poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) nanofibers with chain-like arrays via electrospinning technique. The aggregation state of the obtained Ag nanoparticle dimers or larger, which are formed in a concentrated PVA solution, makes a significant contribution to the high sensitivity of SERS to 4-mercaptobenzoic acid (4-MBA) molecules with an enhancement factor (EF) of 10(9). The superiority of enhancement ability of this Ag/PVA nanofiber mat is also shown in the comparison to other substrates. Furthermore, the Ag/PVA nanofiber mat would keep a good reproducibility under a low concentration of 4-MBA molecule (10(-6) M) detection with the average RSD values of the major Raman peak less than 0.07. The temporal stability of the substrate has also been demonstrated. This disposable, easy handled, flexible free-standing substrate integrated the advantages including the superiority of high sensitivity, reproducibility, stability, large-scale, and low-cost production compared with other conventional SERS substrates, implying that it is a perfect choice for practical SERS detection application.

Abstract:Colloidal plasmonic metal nanoparticles are capable of surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) for various analytical fields. Despite steady efforts to establish hot spots and obtain optimal SERS signals, it remains a challenge to ensure the accessibility and high density for enhancing Raman activity. Here, pyramid silicon was utilized as a template to fabricate the graphene oxide (GO)/silver nanoparticles (AgNPs)/pyramid polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) three-dimension (3D) flexible structure. Micrographs displayed the hybrid structure inherited the periodic 3D nanostructure with the pyramid microstructure, and the results exhibited that the proposed substrate possesses superior SERS performance with high sensitivity, homogeneity and stability. The enhancement factor reached up to 8.1 × 109 using rhodamine 6G as the probe molecules. Besides, the in situ detection of the malachite green (MG) on the shrimp’s surface was carried out to achieve and detect surface analytes. This work can provide a novel assembled SERS substrate as SERS-based biological detection in practical applications.

Abstract:The detection of molecules from highly diluted solutions with a limited amount is vital for precancer diagnosis, food safety, and forensic analysis. The sensitivity and convenience of detection techniques are the primary concerns. In this study, a hybrid superhydrophobic/-philic (SH/SHL) microporous platform is designed and fabricated by a femtosecond laser to improve surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) performances. Relying on the micropores fabricated at the center of SHL patterns, sediments distributed at the central regions are avoided, leading to the further enrichment of the target molecules. The engineered micropores with high identification further improve the speed of Raman tests, and the fabricated SERS substrate shows an advantage in outdoor handheld detection and automated inspection applications. The optimized SERS sensor is sufficient for attomolar-level detection (10-17 M) of rhodamine 6G using analyte volumes of just 5 μL, corresponding to an enhancement factor of 5.19 × 1013. Meanwhile, a relative standard deviation of 7.48% at 10-10 M shows the excellent uniformity of this proposed SERS platform. This work further pushes forward the practical applications of SERS technology in ultratrace molecular detections.
High-performance, Large-Area Flexible SERS Substrates Prepared by Reactive Ion Etching for Molecular Detection

Abstract:In the realm of molecular detection, the surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) technique has garnered increasing attention due to its rapid detection, high sensitivity, and non-destructive characteristics. However, conventional rigid SERS substrates are either costly to fabricate and challenging to prepare over a large area, or they exhibit poor uniformity and repeatability, making them unsuitable for inspecting curved object surfaces. In this work, we present a flexible SERS substrate with high sensitivity as well as good uniformity and repeatability. First, the flexible polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) substrate is manually formulated and cured. SiO2/Ag layer on the substrate can be obtained in a single process by using ion beam sputtering. Then, reactive ion etching is used to etch the upper SiO2layer of the film, which directly leads to the desired densely packed nanostructure. Finally, a layer of precious metal is deposited on the densely packed nanostructure by thermal evaporation. In our proposed system, the densely packed nanostructure obtained by etching the SiO2layer directly determines the SERS ability of the substrate. The bottom layer of silver mirror can reflect the penetrative incident light, the spacer layer of SiO2and the top layer of silver thin film can further localize the light in the system, which can realize the excellent absorption of Raman laser light, thus enhancing SERS ability. In the tests, the prepared substrates show excellent SERS performance in detecting crystalline violet with a detection limit of 10-11M. The development of this SERS substrate is anticipated to offer a highly effective and convenient method for molecular substance detection.

Abstract:Surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) technology with the advantages of ultra-high sensitivity, non-destructive analysis, and quick measurement for molecular detection applications is receiving increasing attention. However, traditional rigid SERS substrates face challenges in in-suit conformal detection and weak structure coupling effect for real-life applications. Here we report a flexible polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) substrate loaded with plasmonic nanoparticle-on-a-mirror (NPOM) metasurface for SERS detection that featured outstanding sensitivity, uniformity, repeatability, and excellent mechanical flexibility. The upper multilayered NPOM metasurface can be fabricated in a single-step process by ion beam sputtering of various targets. This NPOM configuration consists of dense silver nanoparticles over a silver mirror, separated by a SiO2 spacer layer, which can realize near-total power absorption and exhibits superior SERS ability. The bottom PDMS layer for support can provide excellent mechanical properties. In the test, the as-prepared NPOM/PDMS substrates show high SERS performance in detecting crystal violet and chlorpyrifos molecules. This flexible metasurface SERS substrate promises to provide an in-suit and efficient approach for trace substance detection.

Abstract:Flexible surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) substrates offer advantages over traditional rigid substrates for efficient extraction of target molecules from complex surfaces, which is critical for technical applications ranging from pesticide residue analysis to environmental pollutant monitoring and forensic science detection. Herein, flexible sandwich-structured silver nanowires with laser-induced graphene and polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) (Ag NWs@LIG@PDMS) with high SERS activity, flexibility, and stability were prepared by a simple method. Its detection limit is as high as 10-14 M, which is significantly higher than that of silver nanowires embedded in PDMS (Ag NWs/PDMS) and silver nanowire adhesive PDMS (Ag NWs@PDMS) with bilayer structure, due to the efficacy of interlayer laser-induced graphene (LIG). Moreover, compared with similar structures, the sophisticated structural design of silver nanowires with laser-induced graphene embedded in PDMS (Ag NWs/LIG@PDMS) enables higher SERS activity. Apart from this, the Ag NWs@LIG@PDMS film maintains excellent SERS performance even under 10% tensile deformation and extreme operating temperature (-80 to 80 degrees C). In view of the above-mentioned advantages, SERS substrates have been successfully used for fast, efficient, low-cost, and nondestructive extraction and detection of peel surface and fingerprint residues in real scenes, providing avenues for molecular trace extraction and detection in food safety and forensics science.

Abstract:A new flexible, super-hydrophobic, and highly sensitive polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) based-substrate would be developed for surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) detection. PDMS substrate is modified by nitrogen plasma and then deposited the organic conjugated molecules (α, ω-diperfluorohexylquaterthiophene, DFH-4T) films various thickness of Au nanoislands. The perfluorohexyl (-n-C6F13) chain of DFH-4T displays the advantages of high volatility and low vapor deposition temperature and can form a super-hydrophobic ivy-like nanostructure. After depositing the Au nanoislands on DFH-4T, the vertically arranged Au-DFH-4T nanostructure combined provides a tip-focusing effect and generates a very high electromagnetic field to enhance the Raman signal. Benefiting from the hydrophobic ivy-like nanostructure (maximum contact angle: ~146o) of Au@DFH-4T nanostructure, the hydrophobic molecule (vitamin D3, cholecalciferol) can be measured at ultralow concentration (10−10 M). Moreover, the flexible SERS sensor exhibited acceptable efficiency and durability after 100 cycles bending tests. SERS intensity would increase ~1.6 time at 0.35 cm bending radius. This facile and efficient detection technique for meeting the increased demands for bio-detection, especially for hydrophobic biomolecules.

Abstract:Surface enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) is a technique that utilizes the surface electric field of metal nanostructures to amplify Raman signals and promote the analysis and detection of trace molecules. In order to harness the potential of flexible SERS substrates, this work proposes a simple and cost-effective method for preparing a large-area (circular, 7.5 cm in diameter, with a 38 cm(2) area) three-dimensional (3D) flexible SERS substrate. We first prepared a bowl-shaped nanoarray of polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) by utilizing a polystyrene microsphere (PS) as sacrificial templates and then loaded a monolayer of gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) on it, finally a high-strength 3D AuNPs/PDMS flexible SERS substrate is obtained successfully. There are two key steps here, which are using plasma etching to regulate the gap between PS spheres and using the thermal demolding method to facilitate the separation of PS and PDMS. The ultralarge area AuNPs/PDMS substrate exhibits high SERS detection sensitivity and good uniformity. The SERS substrate possesses the advantage of multifunctional detection. The proposed substrate demonstrated detections of up to 10(-9), 10(-7), and 10(-8) M concentrations of rhodamine 6G (R6G), vitamin C, and thiram molecules, respectively. The detection results meet international standards. Electromagnetic simulations using the finite difference time domain reveal that the SERS enhancement originates from the surface plasmon resonance and coupling effects of AuNPs. This large-area 3D flexible SERS substrate not only enhances detection efficiency by enabling the detection of a greater number of samples or sample regions but also provides a new approach for detecting vitamin C and pesticide residues. It may also be used in electronic skin sensors, in situ pesticide residue detection, on-scene evidence collection in criminal investigations, and so on.
Fabrication of flexible multidimensional CC/MoS 2 @Ag@PDMS hybrids as stable and self-cleaning SERS substrate for sensitive and quantitative point-of-care testing

Abstract:Flexible surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) sensors are ideal for point-of-care testing (POCT) of hazardous materials. The key to practical applications lies in their quantitative detection capabilities and high stability for cycle use. In this study, we propose a simple method to develop a recoverable CC/MoS 2 @Ag@PDMS composite SERS substrate using chemical vapor deposition (CVD) technology. This flexible SERS substrate, utilizing 4-aminothiophenol (4-ATP) as the detection molecule, demonstrated a high enhancement factor (∼ 10 7 ) and a low detection limit (10 −12 M). The corrected linearity problem achieved good linear correlation (R 2 = 0.997) by using the intrinsic Raman signal from the polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) substrate. The results of theoretical calculations illustrate this excellent SERS performance by a combination of electromagnetic and chemical enhancements. In addition, in the presence of MoS 2 , the substrate demonstrated excellent self-cleaning cycle detection and maintained high SERS activity through more than 100 mechanical deformations of bending and twisting. In situ detection was performed for tetramethylthiuram disulfide (TMTD), ampicillin (AMP), and ciprofloxacin (CI) with detection limits of 10 −9 M. These promising detection results suggest that this highly stable and flexible substrate can be used for POCT and environmental safety by simply wiping objects to obtain contaminant samples.

Abstract:A controllable method for fabricating flexible surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) substrates is demonstrated by depositing silver onto a flexible nanopillar array film. The flexible nanopillar array film was cost-effectively prepared by replicating an anodic aluminum oxide (AAO) template with UV-curable polyurethane acrylate (PUA) over a large area. Then, the deposition of silver was done by an Ar-assisted thermal evaporation. In the deposition process, the partial pressure of Ar was optimized because it has a significant influence on the SERS intensity through the microstructural changes of silver deposited on PUA nanopillars. In addition, the increase in the nanopillar diameter and height enhanced the SERS intensity obtained at 785-nm excitation because of the increased number of hot spots. However, the agglomeration of Ag-deposited nanopillars, which is caused by high aspect ratios, negatively affected the SERS performance in terms of intensity and standard deviation. The optimized Ag-deposited nanopillar array film with nanopillar diameters and heights of 80 nm and 200 nm exhibited excellent SERS sensitivity and signal reproducibility with stable mechanical flexibility. For application in food and biomedical analysis, it was used for detecting saccharin and peptide and showed a good linear relationship between the SERS intensity and concentration. These findings demonstrate the suitability of our method for the controllable fabrication and optimization of flexible SERS substrates with high sensitivity and reproducibility.
Flexible, foldable and transparent SERS film with high sensitivity and signal homogeneity via silver ion exchange and in-situ reduction

Abstract:The adhesion between metal plasma and substrate was the key of surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) technology. The preparation of ideal SERS substrate with multiple advantages such as high sensitivity and good signal reproducibility was still the focus of research. A flexible foldable and transparent fluorinated polyimide/silver NPs (FPI@Ag) SERS film was fabricated by the ion exchange and in-situ reduction method in this work. The effects of KOH hydrolysis time, AgNO 3 ion exchange time and concentration, the type and concentration of reducing agents on the SERS performance of the FPI@Ag film were systematically discussed. As a result, the hydrolysis time of KOH affected the thickness of the metallic silver layer, the concentration of AgNO 3 affected the size and spacing of Ag NPs, and the Raman signal of was remarkably enhanced when borane dimethylamine complex (DMAB) was used as reducing agent. When the detection limit of 4-Aminothiophenol was as low as 1 × 10 −11 mol·L −1 , the obvious Raman characteristic peak still appeared. The enhancement factor (EF) was up to 9.4 × 10 7 . The linear quantification range was achieved in the range from 10 −3 –10 −11 mol·L −1 , R 2 = 0.9987. In addition, we also performed multi-cycle bending and torsion test on the FPI@Ag film, and obtained stable Raman signals. The prepared FPI@Ag film can be attached to the surface of uneven samples, which can be used for on-site Raman detection and analysis.

Abstract:Surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) is a precise and noninvasive analytical technique to identify vibrational fingerprints of trace analytes with sensitivity down to the single-molecule level. However, substrates can influence this capability, and current SERS techniques lack uniform, reproducible, and stable substrates to control plasma hot spots over a wide spectral range. Herein, we demonstrate a flexible SERS substrate via longitudinal stretching of a polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) film. This substrate, after stretching and shrinking, exhibits an irregular wrinkled structure with abundant gaps and grooves that function as hot spots, thereby improving the hydrophobic properties of the material. To investigate the enhancement effect of Raman signals, silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) were mixed with Rhodamine 6G (R6G) solution, and the obtained blend was dropped onto the PDMS film to form a coffee ring pattern. According to the results, the hydrophobicity of the substrate increases with the degree of PDMS stretching, achieving the optimal level at 150% stretching. Moreover, the increase in hydrophobicity makes the measured molecules more aggregated, which enhances the Raman signal. The stretching and shrinkage of the PDMS film lead to a much higher density of nanogaps among nanoparticles and nanogrooves, which serve as multiple hot spots. Being highly localized regions of intense local fields, these hot spots make a significant contribution to SERS performance, improving the sensitivity and reproducibility of the method. In particular, the relative standard deviation (RSD) was found to be 2.5544%, and the detection limit was 1 × 10-7 M. Therefore, SERS using stretchable and flexible micro-nano substrates is a promising way for detecting dyes in wastewater.

Abstract:Surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) is an important sustainable technique because of its ability to detect trace-level analytes including pesticides, heavy metals, explosives, proteins, pathogens, and other chemical and biological contaminants. In this paper, we report a facile approach to highly sensitive SERS substrates by combining hierarchically patterned micro- and nanostructures with silver nanoparticles (Ag NPs) adsorbed on poly(N,N-dimethylaminoethyl methacrylate) (PDMAEMA) surface. The patterned structures were fabricated using breath figures as dynamic templates in which polar block enriches at the rim of the pores. This characteristic of the breath figure method makes it possible to employ a simple coating technique to construct substrates decorated with Ag NPs, which have a diameter mostly ranging from 18 to 30 nm. Results indicate that the hierarchically ordered substrates show enhancement factors as high as 4 X 10(8). It is also found that the enhancement factors are concentration-dependent, relying on the ratio of the number of analytes to Ag NPs. Moreover, the prominent enhancement at Raman shift of similar to 614 cm(-1) has been observed, which will be useful in the detection of analytes such as some kinds of pesticides and viruses with characteristic peaks in this Raman shift range (e.g., adenovirus). This proposed approach provides an effective, reproducible, electroless, and facile method for preparing high-quality SERS substrates.
Flexible and Superhydrophobic Silver Nanoparticles Decorated Aligned Silver Nanowires Films as Surface-Enhanced Raman Scattering Substrates

Abstract:Flexible and superhydrophobic silver nanoparticles decorated aligned silver nanowires (AgNWs@AgNPs) films were employed as efficient surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) substrates to investigate the SERS properties of the Rhodamine B (RB). Aligned silver nanowires were fabricated via interface self-assembly technique and incorporated into shape memory polyurethane (SMPU) by hot-press method, which not only endow the composites with ordered array characteristics but also flexibility due to the presence of polymer. After an electrochemical deposition combined with a galvanic reaction, AgNWs@AgNPs was obtained. At last, the substrate was functioned with perfluorodecanethiol (PFDT), and the target flexible and superhydrophobic silver nanoparticles decorated aligned silver nanowires substrate was obtained. The substrate confines water droplet in a small area, and the analytes were enriched owing to the concentrating effect. The SERS assay using the as-synthesized flexible and superhydrophobic silver films as substrates can detect Rhodamine B as low as10−10 M. The mechanism is thought to relate to the formation of robust superhydrophobic film, which is based on micro- and nanoscaled hierarchical structure provided by the AgNWs@AgNPs layer, strong adhesion between the SMPU film and the AgNWs@AgNPs layer, and the low surface energy molecule adsorption on the silver surface. The combined superhydrophobic and flexible properties endow the SERS substrate with improved detection limit for practical SERS applications.

Abstract:The fabrication of highly active and free-standing surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) substrates in a simple and low-cost manner has been a crucial and urgent challenge in recent years. Herein, SiO2 nanofiber substrates modified with size-tunable Ag nanoparticles were prepared by the combination of electrospinning and in situ chemical reduction. The results demonstrate the presence and uniform adsorption of Ag nanoparticles on the SiO2 matrix surface. The free-standing composite nanofibrous substrates show high-performance SERS response toward 4-mercaptophenol and 4-mercaptobenzoic acid, and the detection limit can be as low as 10-10 mol/L. Most importantly, the as-prepared substrate as a versatile SERS platform can realize label-free detection of bio-macromolecules of bacteria, i.e., Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) and Escherichia coli (E. coli). Furthermore, the substrates also possess outstanding antibacterial activities against S. aureus and E. coli. Briefly, the significance of this study is that size-tunable Ag nanoparticles can be decorated on SiO2 nanofiber surfaces with triethanolamine as a bridging and reducing agent through a one-pot reaction, and the as-prepared nanofibrous membranes are expected to act as a candidate for label-free SERS detection as well as antibacterial dressing.
