Abstract:Objective: To evaluate degree of conversion (DC), Knoop microhardness (KHN), internal marginal adaptation (IA), and polymerization shrinkage stress (PS) of one conventional and four bulk-fill composites. Methods: Bulk-fill composites tested were Surefil SDR (SDR), Filtek Bulk-Fill (FBF), Tetric EvoCeram Bulk-Fill (TEC), and EverX Posterior (EXP). The conventional composite Herculite Classic (HER) was tested using both incremental and bulk-fill insertion techniques. Standardized Class I preparations (4-mm-depth) were made in extracted molars and restored with each product system (N=5). After 1-week wet storage, restorations were cross-sectioned and DC and KHN were evaluated at four depths (1, 2, 3, and 4mm) using confocal Raman spectroscopy and KHN techniques, respectively. Epoxy resin replicas of restorations were evaluated using scanning electron microscopy for IA. PS was determined using composite bonded to acrylic rods attached to a universal testing machine (N=5). Results: Within bulk-fill products, only SDR and FBF demonstrated similar DC at all depths, and KHN values did not statistically differ among depths, except for TEC. Neither placement method nor depth affected KHN or DC, except the DC of HER bulk-fill at 4mm. Incrementally layered HER, and bulk-fills SDR and TEC demonstrated the lowest proportion of internal gaps. Highest and lowest PS values were measured for EXP and TEC, respectively. Significance: DC with depth was not uniform among all bulk-fill materials, although no difference in KHN was found. Higher PS correlated positively with higher proportion of interfacial gaps. The incremental technique using conventional composite showed reduced gap formation.
Mechanical Properties of Bulk-Fill Resin Composites with Single Increment Up to 4 Mm: A Novel Mechanical Strength Test

Abstract:Purpose: To evaluate the mechanical properties of two brands of bulk-fill resin composites placed in a single increment up to 4 mm thickness via a novel mechanical strength test and provide related explanations. Methods: Light transmission (LT), translucency parameter (TP), color difference (AE), Vickers hardness (HV) of two bulk-fill resin composites (Filtek Bulk Fill Posterior, Tetric N-Ceram Bulk Fill) and two conventional resin composites (Z100, Spectrum TPH) were evaluated. A novel flexural strength (FS) test method was applied for bulk-fill resin composite to determine the FS value of the bottom composites at depths of 1, 2, 3, and 4 mm after 24 hours of aging treatment (3 months water storage and 15,000 thermal cycles). The conventional resin composites were also tested for FS and all the FS results were subjected to Weibull analysis. Degree of conversion (DC) in the bulk-fill resin composites, light-cured at depths of 1, 2, 3, and 4 mm and conventional resin composites at depths of 2 and 4 mm, were assessed by FTIR. Results: Both bulk-fill resin composites showed higher light transmission and translucency than that of conventional ones at each of the same thicknesses (1, 2, 3, 4 mm), wherein their flexural strength was not affected by depth. The Weibull analysis suggested both bulk-fill resin composites achieved good reliability and structural integrity under each curing thickness. Vickers hardness was affected by the material type and thickness. Bulk-fill resin composites showed a decrease in degree of conversion between 1 mm and 4 mm, but both were over 55%. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE: Filtek Bulk Fill Posterior, Tetric N -Ceram Bulk Fill achieved acceptable mechanical ' properties when cured at depths of up to 4 mm, which was beneficial from their optical and polymerized properties.
Degree of Conversion and Polymerization Shrinkage of Bulk-Fill Resin-Based Composites.

Abstract:This study evaluated the degree of conversion (DC) and polymerization shrinkage (PS) of contemporary bulk-fill resin-based composites (RBCs) including giomer materials. Two giomer bulk-fill (Beautifil Bulk Restorative [BBR], Beautifil Bulk Flowable [BBF]), two nongiomer bulk-fill (Tetric N-Ceram Bulk-fill [TNB], Smart Dentin Replacement [SDR]), and three conventional non-bulk-fill (Beautifil II [BT], Beautifil Flow Plus [BF], Tetric N-Ceram [TN]) RBCs were selected for the study. To evaluate the DC, disc-shaped specimens of 5-mm diameter and 2-mm, 4-mm, and 6-mm thickness were fabricated using customized Teflon molds. The molds were bulk filled with the various RBCs and cured for 20 seconds using a light-emitting diode curing light with an irradiance of 950 mW/cm2. The DC (n=3) was determined by attenuated total reflectance Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy by computing the spectra of cured and uncured specimens. PS (n=3) was measured with the Acuvol volumetric shrinkage analyzer by calculating specimen volumes before and after light curing. The mean DC for the various materials ranged from 46.03% to 69.86%, 45.94% to 69.38%, and 30.65% to 67.85% for 2 mm, 4 mm, and 6 mm, respectively. For all depths, SDR had the highest DC. While no significant difference in DC was observed between depths of 2 mm and 4 mm for the bulk-fill RBCs, DC at 2 mm was significantly greater than 6 mm. For the conventional RBCs, DC at 2 mm was significantly higher than at 4 mm and 6 mm. Mean PS ranged from 1.48% to 4.26% for BBR and BF, respectively. The DC at 2 mm and PS of bulk-fill RBCs were lower than their conventional counterparts. At 4 mm, the DC of giomer bulk-fill RBCs was lower than that of nongiomer bulk-fill materials.

Effect of High-radiant Emittance and Short Curing Time on Polymerization Shrinkage Vectors of Bulk Fill Composites

Abstract:Purpose: To evaluate the effect of short curing time using a high-radiant emittance light on polymerization shrinkage vectors in different consistency bulk-fill composites (BFRCs) using micro-computed tomography. Methods and materials: Radiopaque zirconia fillers were homogeneously incorporated and functioned as radiopaque tracers into two regular-paste: TBFill (Tetric EvoCeram Bulk Fill) and TPFill (Tetric PowerFill), and two flowable (n=6): TBFlow (Tetric EvoFlow Bulk Fill) and TPFlow (Tetric PowerFlow) resin composites. Class I cavities (4 mm depth × 4 mm length × 4 mm width) were 3D-printed and filled in a single increment: TBFill and TBFlow were light-activated using a Bluephase Style 20i (10 seconds in high-mode); TPFill and TPFlow were light-activated using a Bluephase PowerCure (three seconds). The same adhesive system (Adhese Universal) was used for all groups. Microcomputed tomography scans were obtained before and after light-activation. Filler particle movement was identified by polymerization shrinkage vectors at five depths (from 0-4 mm): top, top-middle, middle, middle-bottom and bottom. Results: TPFlow showed the lowest total vector displacement, followed by TBFlow, TBFill and TPFill, significantly different among each other (p<0.05). Generally, BFRCs showed decreased vector displacement with increased depth, and higher displacement at the top-surface (p<0.05). Qualitative analysis showed a similar pattern of vector magnitude and displacement for groups TBFill and TPFill, with displacement vectors on occlusal (top) surfaces toward the center of the restoration from the top to middle areas, and relatively limited displacement at the bottom. TBFlow and TPFlow showed more displacement on the occlusal (top). Conclusions: Short curing time with high-radiant emittance on fast-curing BFRCs was shown to be a feasible option in terms of vector displacement. Flowable BFRCs presented lower vector displacement than their regular-viscosity versions.

Abstract:Bulk-fill composites were introduced in dentistry to accelerate clinical procedures while providing adequate outcomes. Concerns regarding the use of bigger composite increments rely on the polymerization shrinkage and shrinkage stress, which may generate gaps on the adhesive interface and result in a reduced success rate.OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the polymerization shrinkage stress of different bulk-fill resin composites and their elastic modulus.MATERIALS AND METHODS: Fourteen specimens were made for each of the nine different resin composites (seven with 12 mm3 and seven with 24 mm3): Surefill SDR flow (SDR), X-tra Base (XB), Filtek Bulk Fill Flowable (FBF), Filtek Z350XT Flow (Z3F); Tetric Evo Ceram Bulk Fill (TBF), X-tra Fil (XF), Filtek Bulk Fill (FBP), Admira Xtra Fusion (ADM) and Filtek Z350 XT (Z3XT). Linear shrinkage stress was evaluated for 300 s with the aid of a linear shrinkage device adapted to a Universal Testing Machine. For each composite group, seven additional specimens (2x2x25 mm) were made and Young's modulus was evaluated with a 3-point bending device adapted in a Universal Testing Machine with 0.5 mm/min crosshead speed and 50 KgF loading cell.RESULTS: For 12 mm3 specimens, three-way ANOVA showed that only SDR and TBF generated lower stress after 20 s. Considering 300 s, TBF, SDR, and XF generated the lowest stress, followed by ADM, FBP, XB, and FBF, which were similar to Z3XT. Z3F generated the highest stress values for all time points. Considering 24 mm3 specimens after 20 s, all bulk fill composites generated lower stress than Z3XT, except XB. After 300 s, SDR, FBP, and ADM generated the lowest stress, followed by TBF and XF. For elastic modulus, one-way ANOVA showed that FBF, SDR, Z3F, and ADM presented the lowest values, followed by XB and TBF. FBP, Z3XT, and XF presented the highest elastic modulus among the evaluated composites.CONCLUSIONS: Bulk-fill resin composites presented equal to lower shrinkage stress generation when compared to conventional composites, especially when bigger increments were evaluated. Bulk-fill composites showed a wide range of elastic modulus values, but usually similar to "regular" composites.

Diversity of short-term DC outcomes in bulk-fill RBCs subjected to a 3 s high-irradiance protocol

Abstract:Objectives: To determine the short-term (5 min) initial effects of a high-irradiance light-curing (LC) protocol on light transmission (LT%), radiant exposure (RE) and degree of conversion (DC%) of different bulk-fill resin-based composites (RBCs). Materials and methods: Six bulk-fill composites with different viscosities were investigated: OBF (One Bulk Fill, 3 M), EB (Estelite bulkfill,Tokuyama), PFill, PFlow, ECeram and EFlow (PowerFill, Poweflow, Tetric EvoCeram bulkfill, Tetric Evoflow bulkfill, Ivoclar), subjected to different LC protocols: one ultra-high-intensity (3 W/cm2 -3 s via PowerCure LCU) and two conventional (1.2 W/cm2 -10 s and 20 s via PowerCure and Elipar S10 LCUs). Specimens (n = 5) were polymerized within their molds (ϕ5 mm × 4 mm depth) to determine LT% and RE at 4 mm using a MARC-LC spectrometer. For real-time DC% measurements by FTIR, similar molds were utilized. Data were analyzed by one-way ANOVA and Tukey post-hoc tests at 5 % significance. Results: Regardless of the applied LC protocols, OBF and low-viscosity RBCs (EB, PFlow and EFlow) had the lowest and highest LT%, RE, DC% and RPmax, respectively. RE results of all RBCs were in the same sequence: Elipar-20 s > PCure-10 s > PCure-3 s. DC% of PFill and PFlow displayed no significant difference between the applied LC protocols (p > 0.05). The polymerization kinetic in all materials was well described by an exponential sum function (r2 varied between 0.85 and 0.98), showing a faster polymerization with the PCure-3 s protocol. Significance: The measurement of LT% and DC% at 5 min gave an insight into the developing polymerization process. The initial response of these bulk-fill composite to a high-irradiation protocol varied depending on their composition and viscosity, being faster for low viscosity materials. Nevertheless, even though multiple resin composites are designed to be efficient during photopolymerization, care should be taken when selecting materials/curing protocol.

Abstract:This study compared shrinkage strain, polymerization shrinkage kinetics, and degree of conversion (DC) of a set of resin composites and investigated their influencing factors. Ten commercial resin composites were assessed, and 5 specimens (n = 5) were developed for material and subjected to light curing using light emitting diode light at 650 mW/cm2 for 40 s. The laser triangulation method was adopted to assess the shrinkage strain, and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy was used to measure DC. The shrinkage strain was monitored for 5 min in real time and its data were subjected to differential calculations to get the shrinkage strain rate curve with respect to time, obtaining the maximum shrinkage strain rate (Rmax) and gel time. The values of shrinkage strain varied from 1.28% to 2.10%. The Rmax values were between 5.17 μm/s and 21.83 μm/s. Gel time values varied from 3.08 s to 4.32 s. The DC yielded values ranging from 53.62% to 87.01%. The values of polymerization shrinkage and DC were dependent on the composition of materials, including the monomer matrix and filler system. Compared to the micro-filler materials, the nano-filler resin composites had higher values of DC. Some resin composites are suitable for clinical applications because of their superior polymerization shrinkage properties and DC.
Effect of polymerisation protocols on water sorption, solubility and hygroscopic expansion of fast-cure bulk-fill composite

Abstract:Objective This study examines the effect of two light-curing protocols from a LED polywave light curing unit (LCU) on water sorption, solubility, and hygroscopic expansion of fast and conventional bulk-fill resin-based composites (RBCs) aged in distilled water for 120 d. Methods Three bulk-fill RBCs materials were studied: Tetric PowerFill® ( fast photo-polymerised composite) ( TPF ), Tetric EvoCeram bulk-fill ( EVO ), and GrandioSo x-tra bulk-fill ( GSO ) ( conventiona l photo-polymerised composites). Specimens were prepared within a 3D-printed resin mold (8-mm diameter x 4-mm height) and light-cured from one side only with 2 modes of polywave LCU (Bluephase® PowerCure): 3 s mode and for 20 s in "Standard" mode. Water sorption and solubility were measured at fixed time intervals for 120 d of distilled water storage, then reconditioned to dry to measure desorption for 75 d, all at 37 ± 1 °C. Hygroscopic (volumetric) expansion was recorded at the same time intervals up to 120 d. Data were analysed through SPSS using Two-way ANOVA, One-way ANOVA, independent t-tests, and Tukey's post-hoc correction tests (p < 0.05). Results TPF, when irradiated for 3 s demonstrated minimal water sorption (0.83%), solubility (1.01 μg/mm 3 ), and least volumetric expansion (1.64%) compared to EVO and GSO. While EVO showed the highest water sorption (1.03%) and solubility (1.95 μg/mm 3 ) at 3 s. GSO had the lowest sorption (0.67%) and (0.56%) in 3 s and 20 s protocols, respectively. Nevertheless, all the sorption and solubility data were within the ISO 4049 limits. Significance For TPF, fast (3 s) polymerisation did not increase either water sorption or solubility, compared with 20 s irradiation. However, with the two comparative bulk-fill composites, fast cure increased water sorption by 15–25% and more than doubled solubility. These findings were consistent with the lesser volumetric expansions observed for Tetric PowerFill at both the fast and standard protocols, indicating its relative stability across polymerisation protocols.

Abstract:An important disadvantage of current dental resin composites is polymerization shrinkage. This shrinkage has clinical repercussions such as sensitivity, marginal discoloration, and secondary caries. The objective of this study was to compare three filling techniques in terms of the transient stresses induced at the resin composite/tooth interface during polymerization. The techniques were: bulk filling (B), three horizontal increments (HI), and three wedge increments (WI). A simple Class V cavity preparation was modeled in finite element analysis. Polymerization shrinkage was simulated by a thermal stress analogy, thereby causing 1% shrinkage due to an arbitrary coefficient of thermal expansion. Interface normal and shear stresses were calculated at nine steps during polymerization, proceeding from 0% to 100% volume of cured resin. The importance of the interface transient stresses was revealed by the finding that, in most cases, their peak values exceeded the final or residual stress. Also, the WI and B techniques consistently exhibited the highest and lowest maximum transient stresses, respectively. These results from the simple model of a Class V restoration suggest that bulk filling of light-cured resin composites should be used in restorations which are sufficiently shallow to be cured to their full depth.

Abstract:A family with familial combined hyperlipidaemia in which affected members had non‐symmetric subcutaneous lipomatosis (NSSCL) is described. Affected members had high serum levels of total cholesterol, low density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol and high density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol. By contrast, family members without NSSCL had normal lipid levels. There was also a correlation between the degree of hyperlipidaemia and the amount of subcutaneous lipomas. The occurrence of hyperlipidacmia in family members with NSSCL suggests the existence of a genetic linkage between these two characteristics, but did not show any association with HLA haplotyping.

Abstract:BACKGROUND Topography and fascicular arrangement of the inferior alveolar nerve (IAN) can provide critical information for the estimation of damage to IAN based on patient symptoms, or conversely to evaluate the symptoms resulting from injury to the IAN. PURPOSE The fascicular composition and organization of the IAN were determined to confirm the microarchitecture of the IAN bundles into each of the mandibular teeth, including the composition of the mental nerve. MATERIALS AND METHODS The IAN within the mandibular canal (MC) was examined in 30 hemifaces of embalmed Korean cadavers. RESULTS The most common patterns of nerve fascicle innervation to the mandibular teeth could be grossly classified into three: (1) the superior buccal portion of the IAN innervating the molars, (2) the superior portion innervating the premolars, and (3) the superior lingual or the superior lingual and inferior lingual portions in the posterior MC and the lingual portions in the anterior MC, innervating the incisors and canine. The buccal two-thirds portion of the IAN was composed of the mental nerve. CONCLUSION The IAN had distinctive fascicular organizations, which make it possible to forecast the degree, location, and extent of nerve damage according to presenting symptoms.
Mechanical properties and fracture behavior of flowable fiber reinforced composite restorations

Abstract:OBJECTIVE: The aim was to evaluate the effect of short glass-fiber/filler particles proportion on fracture toughness (FT) and flexural strength (FS) of an experimental flowable fiber-reinforced composite (Exp-SFRC) with two methacrylate resin formulations. In addition, we wanted to investigate how the fracture-behavior of composite restorations affected by FT values of SFRC-substructure.METHODS: Exp-SFRC was prepared by mixing 50wt% of dimethacrylate based resin matrix (bisGMA or UDMA based) to 50wt% of various weight fractions of glass-fiber/particulate filler (0:50, 10:40, 20:30, 30:20, 40:10, 50:0wt%, respectively). FT and FS were determined for each experimental material following standards. Specimens (n=8) were dry stored (37°C for 2 days) before they were tested. Four groups of posterior composite crowns (n=6) composed of different Exp-SFRCs as substructure and surface layer of commercial particulate filler composite were fabricated. Crowns were statically loaded until fracture. Failure modes were visually examined. The results were statistically analysed using ANOVA followed by post hoc Tukey's test.RESULTS: ANOVA revealed that ratio of glass-fiber/particulate filler had significant effect (p<0.05) on tested mechanical properties of the Exp-SFRC with both monomer systems. Exp-SFRC (50wt%) had significantly higher FT (2.6MPam1/2) and FS (175.5MPa) (p<0.05) compared to non-reinforced material (1.3MPam1/2, 123MPa). Failure mode analysis of crown restorations revealed that FT value of the substructure directly influenced the failure mode.SIGNIFICANCE: This study shows that short glass-fibers can significantly reinforce flowable composite resin and the FT value of SFRC-substructure has prior importance, as it influences the crack arresting mechanism.

Comparison of mechanical properties of a new fiber reinforced composite and bulk filling composites

Abstract:OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to evaluate the mechanical and physical properties of a newly developed fiber reinforced dental composite.MATERIALS AND METHODS: Fiber reinforced composite EverX Posterior (EXP, GC EUROPE), and other commercially available bulk fill composites, including Filtek Bulk Fill (FB, 3M ESPE), SonicFill (SF, Kerr Corp.), SureFil (SDR, Dentsply), Venus Bulk Fill (VB, HerausKultzer), Tetric evoceram bulk fill (TECB, Ivoclar Vivadent), and Xtra Base (XB, Voco) were characterized. Composite samples light-cured with a LED device were evaluated in terms of flexural strength, flexural modulus (ISO 4049, n = 6), fracture toughness (n = 6), and Vickers hardness (0, 2, and 4 mm in depth at 24 hr, n = 5). The EXP samples and the fracture surface were observed under a scanning electron microscopy. Data were statistically analyzed using one-way ANOVA and unpaired t-test.RESULTS: EXP, FB, and VB had significantly higher fracture toughness value compared to all the other bulk composite types. SF, EXP, and XB were not statistically different, and had significantly higher flexural strength values compared to other tested composite materials. EXP had the highest flexural modulus, VB had the lowest values. Vickers hardness values revealed SF, EXP, TECB, and XB were not statistically different, and had significantly higher values compared to other tested composite materials. SEM observations show well dispersed fibers working as a reinforcing phase.CONCLUSIONS: The addition of fibers to methacrylate-based matrix results in composites with either comparable or superior mechanical properties compared to the other bulk fill materials tested.
GRAIN POPULATIONS IN THE M 17 SOUTH-WEST STAR FORMING COMPLEX

Abstract:The different spectral components of the 3-12 m dust emission are imaged in the M 17 south-west molecular cloud / HII region interface. The various images result from a combination of space borne (ISO) and ground based (CFHT) observations. A spatial correlation analysis shows that there are two main components, which correspond to the continuum (in- cluding broad features) and to the emission bands (3.3, 6.2, 7.7 and 11.3 m) respectively. The former peaks towards the HII region whereas the later dominates at the molecular cloud inter- face. This is consistent with a model which attributes the bands to PAH molecules and the continuum to very small grains. In the frame of the coal dust model, these observations put constraints on the properties of the grains, implying a band-to-continuum ratio which varies strongly with the excitation conditions. This analysis, which points out the signature of very small particles, does not favor one model relative to the other.
Monomer elution and shrinkage stress analysis of addition-fragmentation chain-transfer-modified resin composites in relation to the curing protocol

Abstract:Objective: The purpose was to compare the effects of rapid (3 s) and conventional (20 s) polymerization protocols (PP) of mono- and multichip LED curing units (LCU) on shrinkage stress (SS) and monomer elution (ME) in bulk-fill resin-based composites (RBC) with and without addition-fragmentation chain-transfer (AFCT) monomer. Methods: Cylindrical (5x4mm) specimens were prepared from two RBCs containing different AFCT monomers (Filtek OneBulk-FOB; Tetric PowerFill-TPF) and one without (Tetric EvoCeram Bulk-TEC). After soaking for 3, 10, and 14 days (75 % ethanol), ME was quantified using standard monomers by High-Performance Liquid Chromatography. SS was measured from the start of polymerization to 5 min using a Materials Testing Machine. The radiant exitance of LCUs was measured using a spectrophotometer. ANOVA and Tukey's post-hoc test, multivariate analysis and partial eta-squared statistics were used to analyze the data (p < 0.05). Results: AFCT-modification significantly decreased ME (p < 0.001). ME was reduced by half by day 10 and by one tenth by the end of the 14-day compared to the 3-day sampling. ME itself was dependent, whereas the percentage of monomers released was independent of the PP used (p > 0.05). FOB showed the lowest SS (p < 0.001), while there was no significant difference between TPF and TEC (p = 0.124). Both ME and SS were significantly influenced by material type and PP. Significance: The incorporation of the AFCT monomer reduced ME, but this was inversely related to a decrease in exposure time. SS values reduced by rapid PP in parallel with increasing ME values. The utilization of the AFCT molecule in conjunction with an appropriate resin-, initiator-system is of significant consequence for the kinetics of polymerization and the incorporation of monomers into the network.
Polymerization shrinkage of light-cured conventional and bulk-fill composites -The effect of cavity depth and post-curing

Abstract:Volumetric shrinkage (VS) of conventional, bulk-fill, and core build-up resin-based composites (RBCs) of various thickness (1-5 mm) was measured using the modified bonded-disk method with confocal laser scanning microscopy. Additionally, the bottom-to-top ratio of Vickers hardness (%VH) was measured. Conventional RBCs exhibited significantly higher VS than bulk-fill and core build-up RBCs (p<0.05). As specimen thickness increased, VS relative to volume (%VS) and difference in VS at each depth (VSdepth) decreased. For conventional RBCs, there was a significant drop in VSdepth between 1 mm and 2 mm (p<0.05), and another drop was observed between 3 mm and 4 mm (p<0.05) where %VH decreased below 90%. For bulk-fill and core build-up RBCs, VSdepth decreased significantly between 2 mm and 3 mm (p<0.05), but %VH exceeded 90% even in 5 mm deep cavities. These results indicated that post-curing contributed to lower shrinkage in deeper layers, and that conventional RBCs were not adequately polymerized at the depth of over 3 mm.

Abstract:The aim of this study was a comprehensive evaluation and comparison of the physical and mechanical properties of a newly developed nano-sized hydroxyapatite fiber-reinforced composite with other fiber-reinforced and particle-filled composites. Commercially available eight composite resins (3 fiber-reinforced and 5 particle-filled) were used: Fiber-reinforced composites: (1) NovaPro Fill (Nanova): newly developed nano-sized hydroxyapatite fiber-reinforced composite (nHAFC-NF); (2) Alert (Pentron): micrometer-scale glass fiber-reinforced composite (µmGFC-AL); (3) Ever X Posterior (GC Corp): millimeter-scale glass fiber-reinforced composite (mmGFC-EX); Particle-filled composites: (4) SDR Plus (Dentsply) low-viscosity bulk-fill (LVBF-SDR); (5) Estelite Bulk Fill (Tokuyama Corp.) low-viscosity bulk-fill (LVBF-EBF); (6) Filtek Bulk Fill Flow (3M ESPE) low-viscosity bulk-fill (LVBF-FBFF); (7) Filtek Bulk Fill (3M ESPE) high-viscosity bulk-fill (HVBF-FBF); and (8) Filtek Z250 (3M ESPE): microhybrid composite (µH-FZ). For Vickers microhardness, cylindrical-shaped specimens (diameter: 4 mm, height: 2 mm) were fabricated (n = 10). For the three-point bending test, bar-shaped (2 × 2 × 25 mm) specimens were fabricated (n = 10). Flexural strength and modulus elasticity were calculated. AcuVol, a video image device, was used for volumetric polymerization shrinkage (VPS) evaluations (n = 6). The polymerization degree of conversion (DC) was measured on the top and bottom surfaces with Fourier Transform Near-Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR; n = 5). The data were statistically analyzed using one-way ANOVA, Tukey HSD, Welsch ANOVA, and Games-Howell tests (p < 0.05). Pearson coefficient correlation was used to determine the linear correlation. Group µH-FZ displayed the highest microhardness, flexural strength, and modulus elasticity, while Group HVBF-FBF exhibited significantly lower VPS than other composites. When comparing the fiber-reinforced composites, Group mmGFC-EX showed significantly higher microhardness, flexural strength, modulus elasticity, and lower VPS than Group nHAFC-NF but similar DC. A strong correlation was determined between microhardness, VPS and inorganic filler by wt% and vol% (r = 0.572-0.877). Fiber type and length could affect the physical and mechanical properties of fibers containing composite resins.
