Abstract:Toxicity, mobility, bioavailability and biofunctions of chromium, cadmium, mercury and lead are heavily dependent upon their specific chemical forms, leading to a high demand to metal speciation analysis rather than total quantification. Simultaneous speciation analysis of multiple metal(loid)s is attractive to a large sample capacity containing unstable analytes due to its economic and environmental advantages over the conventional single elemental strategies. In this work, an analytical method integrating online solid phase extraction into high performance liquid chromatography interfaced with inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) to simultaneously preconcentrate and quantify Cr, Cd, Hg and Pb forms in pg L-1 levels in water was developed. Cr (III + VI), Cd(II), Hg(II), Pb(II), methylmercury (MeHg), ethylmercury (EtHg), and trimethyl (TML) and triethyl lead (TEL) were captured by the C18 adsorbent (equilibrated with 10 mL of 1.0 mM 2-hydroxyethanethiol at 10 mL min-1) and eluted by mobile phase (5.0 mM Cys at pH 2.0), then completely separated on the C18 column within 8.0 min and eventually determined by ICP-MS. Low limits of detection (0.001-0.007 ng L-1) and quantification (0.003-0.023 ng L-1), good relative standard deviations (<4%) and high enrichment factors (827-2656 folds) were obtained with good linearities. Three reference materials of total cadmium (GBW08602), total mercury (GBW08603) and total lead (GBW08601) in water were analyzed by the developed method to validate the accuracy with good agreement with certified values and satisfactory recoveries (92-100%). This method was proved feasible by the determination of Cr, Cd, Hg and Pb compounds in drinking water, river water, pond water and tap water.
In situ calibration of polar organic chemical integrative samplers to monitor organophosphate flame retardants in river water using polyethersulfone membranes with performance reference compounds

Abstract:Passive sampler is an innovative way of monitoring chemicals in different environmental. A modified polar organic chemical integrative sampler (m-POCIS) with a performance reference compound (PRC) was used to evaluate the concentrations of 8 organophosphate flame retardants (OPFRs) under field conditions. The m-POCIS was deployed for 15days under laboratory conditions and 21days under in situ conditions to determine the concentrations of OPFRs. The analytes were trapped in the sorbent and the microporous polyethersulfone (PES) membrane of the m-POCIS. Sampling rates (Rs) were determined for the studied compounds and ranged from 0.02±0.0003L/d (triphenylphosphine oxide, TPPO) to 0.24±0.021L/d (tripropyl phosphate, TPrP) in the laboratory. The membranes accumulation increased with usage and was correlated to the logKow. Among the tested compounds, tripentylphosphate (TPeP) and triphenylphosphate (TPhP) had the highest logKow values and were mostly detected in the membranes. This behavior resulted in a lag-phase, which was measured by extrapolating the data from the last third of the uptake phase (quasilinear) to the x-axis using a linear regression, before the compounds transferred into the sorbent. TPhP was the only compound with a lag-phase of 3.9days during the 15days experiment. Deuteratedtributyl phosphate (TBP-d27) and desisopropyl atrazine-d5 (DIA-d5) were identified through specific experiments as potential PRC. The results from the PRC calibrations suggested that DIA-d5 (ke (in situ)=0.075±0.0048day-1) can be used as a PRC for the evaluation of OPFRs using m-POCISs. The time-weighted average (TWA) concentrations estimated by the m-POCIS with or without a PRC were significantly correlated with the corresponding values determined from the grab samples. After the PRC calibration, the TWA concentrations of the tested OPFRs in an aquatic environment were lower than those estimated using the laboratory sampling rates (Rs). The m-POCIS with a PRC correction was a suitable tool for estimating OPFRs TWA concentrations in the Yangtze River.
Non-target Screening of Organic Pollutants in Sediments and Sludges Using Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry and Automated Mass Spectral Deconvolution

Abstract:A screening method in the combination of ultrasonic extraction,gas chromatogra-phy-mass spectrometry detection and automated mass spectrometry deconvolution technique was developed for non-target screening of non-polar and weak polar pollutants in sediments and sludges. The samples were extracted by ultrasonication for 20 min using dichloromethane for three times. The extraction solutions were cleaned-up by gel permeation chromatography and a silica gel column,and then 3 g of copper powder was used to remove the sulfur by ultrasonica-tion for 10 min. Parallel experiments were carried out for 5 times and the RSDs were ranged from 5. 8% to 14. 9%. Automated mass spectral deconvolution &identification system( AMDIS) would improve the resolution of overlapping peaks,and identify the pure mass spectrum of the analytes in the cases of stronger background interference and co-extracted substances covering. Standard spectrum databases,such as NISTDRUG,NISTEPA,NISTFDA,Mass Spectral Library, etc,would qualitatively identify the organic pollutants in the samples. As a result,a total of 290 organic pollutants were identified,of which 190 and 153 pollutants were found in sediments and sludges,respectively. The identified pollutants included the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA)priority pollutants,pharmaceuticals,herbicides,antioxidants,intermediates,organic solvents and chemical raw materials. The proposed method is proved to be a promising one for non-target screening of complex matrix samples with the advantages of higher sensitivity and better repeatability.
Polydimethylsiloxane dialysis passive sampler monitoring of chlorinated solvent contaminated sites – A field study

Abstract:The complexity of the subsurface contaminated by chlorinated solvents such as trichloroethylene (TCE) makes it challenging to gain a complete understanding of contamination distribution and establish a conceptual site model (CSM). High-resolution vertical contaminant concentration profiling across both the unsaturated zone and the saturated aquifer is desirable for mapping the distribution of contamination. A Fick's law-based polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) dialysis passive sampler was developed and evaluated on a field scale for its potential application. This study tests the passive sampler at two TCE contaminated sites, and the sampling results were compared with the results from different sampling methods based on the relative percent difference. The PDMS dialysis passive sampler obtained more representative soil gas concentrations in the unsaturated zone than a portable monitoring and sampling device, which caused soil gas flow disturbance by soil gas pumping during sample collection. In the saturated aquifer sampling, the results obtained by the PDMS dialysis passive sampler correlated well with those obtained by a commercial polyethylene passive diffusion bag, and exhibited higher sensitivity under low TCE concentration conditions. Furthermore, the PDMS dialysis passive samplers were densely deployed inside each monitoring well at multiple depths, at two sites, to achieve high-resolution monitoring across the unsaturated zone and 4saturated aquifer. Based on the PDMS dialysis sampler data, a more comprehensive three-dimensional CSM was systematically established.

Abstract:<p>The present work reported a high-throughput strategy for the analysis of 21 perfluorinated compounds (PFCs) in drinking water, tap water, river water and plant effluent from southern China by supramolecular solvent (SUPARS) vortex-mixed microextraction combined with high performance liquid chromatography-Orbitrap high resolution mass spectrometry (HPLC-Orbitrap HRMS). The SUPRAS without heating assistance is less solvent-consumption, meeting the requirements for green environmental protection and sustainable development. Parameters in the microextraction such as volume of dodecanol and tetrahydrofuran (THF), vortexing extraction and centrifugation time, salt concentration were investigated. The optimal extraction conditions were 250 μL of undecanol, 1.0 mL of THF and 20.0% (w/v, 4 g) NaCl. Under the optimum conditions, method limit of detection and method limit of quantitation in the ranges of 0.01–0.08 μg/L and 0.03–0.25 μg/L, good recoveries (72.5–117.8%) and intra-day precision (1.1–11.2%, <em>n</em> = 6), high enrichment factors (48–78) were obtained. The developed method was successfully applied for analysis of PFCs in 13 drinking water, tap water, river water and plant effluent samples collected from southern China. Perfluorobutane sulfonic acid was detected in one river water with concentration of 0.48 μg/L and 1H,1H,2H,2H-Perfluorooctane sulfonic acid was detected in one river water and two plant effluent samples with concentrations in the range of 0.14–0.67 μg/L.</p>

Abstract:The occurrence and ecological impacts of emerging fungicides in the environment has gained increasing attention. This study applied an in-jar passive sampling device based on silicone rubber (SR) film to measuring the freely dissolved concentration ( C free ) of 6 current-use fungicides as a critical index of bioavailability in water and soils. The kinetics parameters including SR-water, soil-water, and organic carbon-water partition coefficients and sampling rates of the target fungicides were first attained and characterized well with their physicochemical properties. The in situ and ex situ field deployment in Hefei City provided the assessment of contaminated levels for these fungicides in rivers and soils. The C free of triadimefon and azoxystrobin was estimated at 0.54 ± 0.07–17.4 ± 2.5 ng L −1 in Nanfei River and Chao Lake, while triadimefon was only found in Dongpu Reservoir water with C free below 0.66 ± 0.04 ng L −1 . The results exhibited that the equilibrium duration of 7 d was suitable for water application but a longer interval of 14 d was recommended for soil sampling. This work demonstrated the advantages of the proposed strategy in terms of fast monitoring within 2 weeks and high sensitivity down to detection limits in 0.5–5 ng L −1 . The in-jar passive sampling device can be extrapolated to the evaluation for a wide coverage of organic pollutants in water and soils.

Abstract:Pharmaceuticals and pesticides are compounds of high concern in surface waters around the world. However, few studies have used passive sampling methods to screen and detect these compounds in natural waters. In this study, a self-developed passive sampler was employed to measure pharmaceuticals and pesticides in the rivers of Nanjing, China. A total of 41 pharmaceuticals and 11 pesticides were detected, among which antibiotic and insecticide were the predominant classes, respectively. Valproic acid, caffeine and triclosan from the pharmaceuticals, and isoprocarb and imidacloprid from the pesticides were found frequently with high concentrations. At most sampling sites, the concentration ratios of caffeine versus carbamazepine exceeded 10, and even above 50, indicating relatively poor efficiency of wastewater treatment, or possibly the direct discharge of raw sewage, or other unknown source of pollution. It was found that the concentrations and ecological risks in the northern area of Yangtze River were higher than those in the southern area of Yangtze River, implying that economic development and population density were not the main contributors to the discovered pollution. The total concentration of pharmaceuticals and pesticides in Qinhuai River increased gradually with the direction of water flow, demonstrating the success of water diversion project in flushing and scouring pollutants.

Abstract:A 12-year-old man was referred to our clinic because of sanguineous discharge. At the out-patient department, bilateral varicocele was found. Urinalysis showed microscopic hematuria, but no other laboratory data were abnormal. Excretion urography was normal. The retrograde phlebograph showed a rare venous return via Santorini's plexus and lumbar veins. After varicocelectomy, urinalysis improved.

Abstract:Groundwater recharge using reclaimed water has developed rapidly around the world to relieve the groundwater resource shortage and declining of the water table. Traditional water treatment systems are inefficient to remove all the types of contaminants, so it is urgent to identify the priority chemical substances (CSs) that deserve our first concern. In this study, we developed a method (EER method) to identify priority CSs in groundwater recharge by surface spreading and direct aquifer injection. Three stages were processed which were exposure assessment, effect assessment and ranking for identification of priority CSs. Fourteen cities in China were selected for data collected and 90 pollutants in reclaimed water samples were analyzed as the target pollutants for a case study. According to three stages, the 90 CSs studied were divided into five groups (primary control CSs and high, moderate and low and no risk control CSs). In the primary control CSs and high, moderate and low and no risk control CSs group there were 14, 18, 21, 21 and 16 CSs, respectively when groundwater recharged by surface spreading, while there were 15, 18, 21, 21 and 15 CSs when recharged by direct injection. This method provided an indicator of prioritizing the risk of 90 compounds in the reclaimed water for groundwater recharge.
Fugacity Gradients of Hydrophobic Organics Across the Air-Water Interface Measured with A Novel Passive Sampler

Abstract:Mass transfer of hydrophobic organic contaminants (HOCs) across the air-water interface is an important geochemical process controlling the fate and transport of HOCs at the regional and global scales. However, few studies have characterized concentration or fugacity profiles of HOCs near both sides of the air-water interface, which is the driving force for the inter-compartmental mass transfer of HOCs. Herein, we introduce a novel passive sampling device which is capable of measuring concentration (and therefore fugacity) gradients of HOCs across the air-water interface. Laboratory studies indicated that the escaping fugacity values of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) from water to air were negatively correlated to their volatilization half-lives. Results for field deployment were consistent between the passive sampler and an active method, i.e., a combination of grab sampling and liquid-liquid extraction. In general, the fugacity profiles of detected PAHs were indicative of an accumulation mechanism in the surface microlayer of the study regions (Haizhu Lake and Hailing Bay of Guangdong Province, China), while p,p'-DDD tended to volatilize from water to the atmosphere in Hailing Bay. Furthermore, the fugacity profiles of the target analytes increased towards the air-water interface, reflecting the complexity of environmental behavior of the target analytes near the air-water interface. Overall, the passive sampling device provides a novel means to better characterize the air-water diffusive transfer of HOCs, facilitating the understanding of the global cycling of HOCs.

Abstract:This work describes development of a quick and accurate online solid-phase extraction (SPE) liquid chromatography tandem mass spectrometry method for simultaneous determination of 87 emerging organic compounds, including 22 per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances, 58 pharmaceuticals and personal care products, and 7 organophosphorus flame retardants, in diverse water matrices. Considering the wide range of physicochemical properties for the target contaminants, efficient analysis in one injection is challenging. Thus, key extraction and analytical parameters, including online SPE sorbent, mobile phase additives, sample pH, loading solvent pH and composition, injection volume, and valve-switching time, were systematically optimized. The final conditions, namely a polymeric reversed-phase column with alkaline samples and an acidic loading solvent, provided satisfactory results for all target analytes compared to conventional methods that employ acidic samples for multi-residue analysis. The method detection limits (MDLs) ranged from 0.16 to 5.13 ng L-1 with 85% of MDLs lower than 2 ng L-1 for sample volumes of just 1.8 mL. The method also demonstrated satisfactory accuracy with 82% of analytes exhibiting 70-130% recovery. Importantly, only 30 min was required per sample. The optimized method was successfully applied to investigate the removal efficiency of emerging contaminants in a drinking water treatment plant and to analyze the environmental occurrence of target analytes. The method is sensitive, reliable, labor-saving, and cost effective, and therefore has the potential to advance large-scale environmental monitoring programs. (C) 2019 Elsevier B.V. Abstract:Recently, numerous organic pollutants have been detected in water environment. The safety of our drinking water has attracted widespread attention. Effective methods to screen and identify high-concern substances are urgently needed. In this study, the combined workflow for the detection and identification of high-concern organic chemicals was established and applied to tap water samples from the Yangtze River Basin. The solid phase extraction (SPE) sorbents were compared and evaluated and finally the HLB cartridge was selected as the best one for most of the contaminants. Based on target, suspect and non-target analysis, 3023 chemicals/peaks were detected. Thirteen substances such as diundecyl phthalate (DUP), 2-hydroxyatrazine, dioxoaminopyrine and diethyl-2-phenylacetamide were detected in drinking water in the Yangtze River Basin for the very first time. Based on three kinds of prioritization principles, 49 ubiquitous, 103 characteristic chemicals and 13 inefficiently removed chemicals were selected as high-concern substances. Among them, 8, 31, 9, 3, 4 substances overlapped with the toxic, risky or high-concern chemicals lists in China, America, European Union, Japan, Korea, respectively. Specific management and removal strategies were further recommended. The workflow is efficient for identification of key pollutants.
Comprehensive evaluation of the distribution, transport and ecological risk of heavy metals in intra-urban river sediments using high-resolution techniques

Abstract:Determining the distribution trends, transport mechanisms, and ecological risks of heavy metals (HMs) in urban river sediments is essential for the government to conduct appropriate remediation work. In this study, we collected sediment cores from the Yayao Waterway in Foshan City, China. The vertical distribution profiles of dissolved and labile Fe, Mn, Cd, Zn, Cu, Cr, Ni, Pb, As, and Co in the sediments were obtained using the thin-film diffusive gradient (DGT) and high-resolution peeper (HR-Peeper) techniques. In addition, the transport rates, contamination levels, and ecological concerns of the HMs were evaluated using the European Community Bureau of Reference (BCR) sequential extraction technique, the DGT-induced sediment fluxes (DIFS) model, and multiple contamination evaluation metrics. The results showed that most of the DGT-labile HMs were associated with Fe/Mn (hydrogen) oxides, and in particular, Zn, Ni, and Cr showed a significant negative correlation with Fe/Mn (p < 0.001). Additionally, Cd had the highest bioavailability (89.17%), and its net diffusive flux at the sediment-water interface (SWI) was positive, which indicated a high release risk from the sediment. However, the R-value of Cd based on the DGT-induced sediment fluxes (DIFS) operation was extremely low, suggesting that although Cd had the biggest supply pool of releases, its release rate was slow. The majority of sampling sites had significantly higher total HM contents in the surface sediments than the background values. The HM contamination in the sediments originated from human activities, primarily from industrial enterprises and with a large contribution from both agricultural and domestic sources. The most polluted HM with the highest ecological danger was Cd, followed by Cu, Zn, Ni, and As when the results of the four pollution evaluation indicators were combined. Consequently, the risk of contamination by HMs in inner-city river sediments should receive more attention.
Rapid resolution liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry method for the determination of endocrine disrupting chemicals (EDCs), pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs) in wastewater irrigated soils

Abstract:A multiresidue analytical method was developed for the determination of 9 endocrine disrupting chemicals (EDCs) and 19 pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs) including acidic and neutral pharmaceuticals in water and soil samples using rapid resolution liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (RRLC-MS/MS). Solid phase extraction (SPE), and ultrasonic extraction combined with silica gel purification were applied as pretreatment methods for water and soil samples, respectively. The extracts of the EDCs and PPCPs in water and soil samples were then analyzed by RRLC-MS/MS in electrospray ionization (ESI) mode in three independent runs. The chromatographic mobile phases consisted of Milli-Q water and acetonitrile for EDCs and neutral pharmaceuticals, and Milli-Q water containing 0.01 % acetic acid (v/v) and acetonitrile: methanol (1:1, v/v) for acidic pharmaceuticals at a flow rate of 0.3 mL/min. Most of the target compounds exhibited signal suppression due to matrix effects. Measures taken to reduce matrix effects included use of isotope-labeled internal standards, and application of matrix-match calibration curves in the RRLC-MS/MS analyses. The limits of quantitation ranged between 0.15 and 14.08 ng/L for water samples and between 0.06 and 10.64 ng/g for solid samples. The recoveries for the target analytes ranged from 62 to 208 % in water samples and 43 to 177 % in solid samples, with majority of the target compounds having recoveries ranging between 70–120 %. Precision, expressed as the relative standard deviation (RSD), was obtained less than 7.6 and 20.5 % for repeatability and reproducibility, respectively. The established method was successfully applied to the water and soil samples from four irrigated plots in Guangzhou. Six compounds namely bisphenol-A, 4-nonylphenol, triclosan, triclocarban, salicylic acid and clofibric acid were detected in the soils.

Abstract:Bioindicators can provide pollution information with longer temporal duration and larger spatial scale. It is an ideal strategy for long-term monitoring of bioaccumulative contaminants. Bioindicator monitoring has been widely used; however, there were seldom detailed studies about bioindicator methodology in literature. The present study proposed a bioindicator framework suitable for the local conditions of China, including selection of bioindicator species, evaluation of impact factors, and derivation of threshold values using per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) as an example. The criteria that proper bioindicator species should meet and the procedure how the bioindicator species is selected were proposed, under which crucian carp (Carassius auratus) was selected as the local bioindicator for studied PFASs. Several factors which may affect accumulation of contaminants in bioindicators were suggested to produce reliable and comparable results. Derivation method of bioindicator thresholds for ecological risk assessment of aquatic ecosystems was firstly developed. The long-term and short-term ecological thresholds of perfluorooctanesulfonate using crucian carp as bioindicator are 3.329 and 1.402 μg/g wet weight respectively. Using the long-term thresholds derived from chronic toxicity data and the accumulative concentrations of contaminants obtained by bioindicator results, the bioindicator monitoring can be used for long-term ecological risk surveillance. The threshold derivation method can extend the application of bioindicator monitoring from the occurrence study to ecological risk surveillance, which is especially important for China who has made progresses on regular contaminant control and starts to be concerned about the ecological risks of the emerging contaminants. The framework can be used to create national and regional long-term freshwater bioindicator monitoring programs, with the purposes of ecological risk assessment, occurrence and temporal trend study, pollution source identification, international convention fulfillment, retrospective study, etc. The bioindicator framework will benefit the aquatic environmental safety and the hazardous chemical management in China.Graphical abstract

Abstract:The objective of this study was to integrate passive sampling with targeted analysis to quantify known contaminants of emerging concern (CECs) and, with non-targeted analysis. to identify previously unknown water-soluble compounds. Polar Organic Chemical Integrative Samplers (POCIS) were deployed in the treated effluent of a wastewater treatment plant serving the City of Hamilton, ON, Canada, as well as at three stations in Hamilton Harbour and at nearshore locations in Lake Ontario. Targeted analysis indicated that there was a gradient of pharmaceuticals, caffeine, and artificial sweeteners from highest levels in wastewater to lowest levels in the harbour furthest from the wastewater discharge. The estimated concentrations of current use pesticides were highest in the central part of the harbour. Pooled POCIS extracts were also analyzed using high-resolution quadrupole-time-of-flight mass spectrometry and the exact mass data generated were screened using a pattern recognition application. The greatest number of features were detected in positive ion mode from POCIS deployed in the central part of the harbour, and so exact mass data from this station were further evaluated using the Global Natural Products Social Molecular Networking data base. Novel CECs tentatively identified included pharmaceuticals from the angiotensin receptor blocker class. Follow-up targeted analysis confirmed that a tire wear compound, hexamethoxymethylmelamine (HMMM), the coal-tar derived compound, lepidine, the anticonvulsant, lamotrigine and a metabolite of a cough suppressant, dextrorphan, were present in POCIS. We propose that this approach be part of a Great Lakes Early Warning System to identify emerging threats from chemical contaminants.

Occurrence and Risk Assessment of Emerging Contaminants in a Water Reclamation and Ecological Reuse Project.

Abstract:Water reclamation and ecological reuse is gradually becoming a popular solution to address the high pollutant loads and insufficient ecological flow of many urban rivers. However, emerging contaminants in water reuse system and associated human health and ecological risks need to be assessed. This study determined the occurrence and human health and ecological risk assessments of 35 emerging contaminants during one year, including 5 types of persistent organic pollutants (POPs), 5 pharmaceutical and personal care products (PPCPs), 7 endocrine disrupting chemicals (EDCs) and 18 disinfection by-products (DBPs), in a wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) and receiving rivers, as well as an unimpacted river for comparison. Results showed that most of PPCPs and EDCs, especially antibiotics, tridosan, estrogens and bisphenol A, occurred frequently at relatively high concentrations, and they were removed from 205% to 88.7% with a mean of 58.9% via WWTP. The highest potential noncarcinogenic and carcinogenic risks in different reuse scenarios were assessed using maximal detected concentrations, all below the acceptable risk limits, with the highest total combined risk value of 9.21 x 10(-9) and 9.98 x 10(-7), respectively. Ecological risk assessment was conducted using risk quotient (RQ) method and indicated that several PPCPs, EDCs and haloacetonitriles (HANs) pose high risk (RQ > 1) to aquatic ecology in the rivers, with the highest RQ up to 83.8. The study suggested that ecological risks need to be urgently addressed by updating and optimizing the process in WWTPs to strengthen the removal efficiencies of emerging contaminants. The study can serve as a reference for safer water reuse in the future, while further studies could be conducted on the health risk of specific groups of people, exposure parameters in water reuse, as well as more emerging contaminants. Abstract:The present work describes the development of a fully automated method based on online solid phase extraction (SPE)-liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) for the simultaneous analysis of multiple classes of pesticides or metabolites in drinking water (DW), surface water (SW), and wastewater effluents (WWEs). The target list covers 111 pesticides or metabolites of various properties and families. LC-MS/MS and online SPE parameters were optimized with regard to the sorbent type, mobile phase composition, wash volume, and flowrate as well as the injection volume. The method showed good linearity in two concentration ranges with 97% and 94% of the coefficients (R2) being higher than 0.99 in the low concentration range (0.1-100 ng L-1) and high concentration range (100-2500 ng L-1), respectively. High sensitivity was observed with method quantification limits (MQLs) of 0.03-5.3 ng L-1, 0.06-17 ng L-1, and 0.08-21 ng L-1, for DW, SW, and WWE, respectively. The recoveries showed an accuracy of 94%, 91%, and 91% in the range of 70-130% for three matrices with satisfactory precision. The overall analysis time per sample was 30 min with minimum pretreatment. To the best of our knowledge, for the first time, 64 pesticides were identified by the high throughput online SPE-based method. The optimized method was used for WWE sample analysis, and 49 pesticides were detected in 12 WWE samples from an economically active city in China. Five pesticides were detected in all the samples, i.e. paclobutrazol, atrazine, diuron, acetamiprid, and triadimenol, and the highest median concentration was observed for carbendazim (324 ng L-1). The advantages of the proposed method over offline ones make it have broad prospects in high throughput and reliable analysis of pesticides in aquatic environments.
