Abstract:SCOOP is a minimal extension to the sequential object-oriented programming model for concurrency. The extension consists of one keyword (separate) that avoids explicit thread declarations, synchronized blocks, explicit waits, and eliminates data races and atomicity violations by construction, through a set of compiler rules. SCOOP was originally described for the Eiffel programming language. This paper makes two contributions. Firstly, it presents a design pattern for SCOOP, which makes it feasible to transfer SCOOP’s concepts to different object-oriented programming languages. Secondly, it demonstrates the generality of the SCOOP model by presenting an implementation of the SCOOP design pattern for Java. Additionally, we describe tools that support the SCOOP design pattern, and give a concrete example of its use in Java.
Simultaneous P Release and Recovery from Fish Farm Sludge Using a Zr-modified Magnetic Adsorbent Treated by Ultrasound

Abstract:It is of great necessity to recover phosphorus (P) from wastes to avoid environmental pollution and alleviate the depletion of available P rock resources. In this study, the integration of ultrasound and magnetic adsorption (ZrO2@Fe3O4) was utilized to retrieve P from fish farm sludge with the aim of quick P release and separation. The results showed that the P concentration released from fish farm sludge gradually increased to 0.5 mg/L, thereby possibly posing threats to the environment. Moreover, the fish farm sludge mainly consisted of inorganic P (73.6% of the total P in the sludge), especially apatite P (50.7% of the total P), which tended to dissolve in acid. With the assistance of ultrasound, the dissolution of inorganic P was promoted under acidic conditions (pH = 1), and 49% of the total P in the sludge was converted into dissoluble P form. The adsorption kinetics of ZrO2@Fe3O4 followed the pseudo-second-order model, and the isotherm fitted the Freundlich model well. In addition, the combination of ultrasound and the ZrO2@Fe3O4 magnetic adsorbent realized almost 100% removal efficiency of P released from the sludge as well as 115% desorption efficiency at the optimum mass ratio of sludge to adsorbent of 3:1. In the reusability experiment, the P removal efficiency and desorption efficiency was maintained at over 90% and 110%, respectively, after five cycles with a low weight loss percentage of 13%. Abstract:With the ever-increasing of Rare Earth Elements (REEs) in various high technology applications, efficient recovery of REEs from liquid sources is becoming significantly important. In this work, ZIF-8 and UiO-66-NH2 (U6N) are combined to form a 3D-agaric like core-shell structure hybrid material (), which exhibits good performance in REEs extraction. Due to the abundant adsorption sites of ZIF-8 and the excellent water stability of UiO-66-NH2, 3D-agaric like showed quick adsorption rate (only 10 min to reach equilibrium), high adsorption capacity and selectivity for REEs from water compared to other reported adsorbents. Maximum adsorption capacities of for neodymium (Nd(III)), europium (Eu(III)), gadolinium (Gd(III)) and erbium (Er(III)) achieved to 249.90, 295.28, 316.22 and 340.95 mg g-1, respectively. has superiority in selective adsorption of REEs from Cd(II), Zn(II), Cu(II), Mn(II) and Co(II) coexistence solution. The order of adsorption capacities for REEs is in agreement with the order of their electronegativity, ionic radius and charge density. Moreover, showed better water stability and recyclability than single MOF. Overall, hybrid material has efficiency in REEs separation from solutions, and has great advantage in the application of wastewater treating.

Improved recovery selectivity of rare earth elements from mining wastewater utilizing phytosynthesized iron nanoparticles

Abstract:While rare earth elements (REEs) play key roles in many modern technologies, the selectivity of recovering of REEs from mining wastewater remains a critical problem. In this study, iron nanoparticles (FeNPs) synthesized from euphorbia cochinchinensis extracts were successfully used for selective recovery of REEs from real mining wastewater with removal efficiencies of 89.4% for Y(III), 79.8% for Ce(III) and only 6.15% for Zn(Ⅱ). FTIR and XPS analysis suggested that the high selective removal efficiency of Y(III) and Ce(III) relative to Zn(Ⅱ) on FeNPs was due to a combination of selective REEs adsorption via complexing with O or N, ion exchange with H+ present in functional groups contained within the capping layer and electrostatic interactions. Adsorptions of Y(III) and Ce(III) on FeNPs conformed to pseudo second-order kinetics and the Langmuir isotherm model with maximum adsorption capacities of 5.10 and 0.695 mg∙g-1, respectively. The desorption efficiencies of Y(III) and Ce(III) were, respectively, 95.0 and 97.9% in 0.05 M acetic acid, where desorption involved competitive ion exchange between Y(III), Ce(III) and Zn(Ⅱ) with H+ contained in acetic acid and intraparticle diffusion. After four consecutive adsorption-desorption cycles, adsorption efficiencies for Y(III) and Ce(III) remained relatively high at 52.7% and 50.1%, respectively, while desorption efficiencies of Y(III) and Ce(III) were > 80.0% and 95.0%, respectively. Overall, excellent reusability suggests that FeNPs can practically serve as a potential high-quality selectivity material for recovering REEs from mining wastewaters.
Efficient Recovery of Rare Earth Elements (Pr(III) and Tm(III)) From Mining Residues Using a New Phosphorylated Hydrogel (Algal Biomass/PEI)

Abstract:With the target of recovering rare earth elements (REEs) from acidic leachates, a new functionalized hydrogel was designed, based on the phosphorylation of algal/polyethyleneimine beads. The functionalization strongly increased the sorption efficiency of the raw material for Pr(III) and Tm(III). Diverse techniques were used for characterizing this new material and correlating the sorption performances and mechanisms to the physicochemical structure of the sorbent. First, the work characterized the sorption properties from synthetic solutions with the usual procedures (study of pH effect, uptake kinetics, sorption isotherms, metal desorption and sorbent recycling, and selectivity from multi-element solutions). Optimum pH was found close to 5; sorption isotherms were fitted by the Langmuir equation (maximum sorption capacities close to 2.14 mmol Pr g−1 and 1.57 mmol Tm g−1). Fast uptake kinetics were modeled by the pseudo-second order rate equation. The sorbent was highly selective for REEs against alkali-earth and base metals. The sorbent was remarkably stable for sorption and desorption operation (using 0.2 M HCl/0.5 M CaCl2 solutions). The sorbent was successfully applied to the leachates of Egyptian ore (pug leaching) after a series of pre-treatments (precipitation steps), sorption, and elution. The selective precipitation of REEs using oxalic acid allows for the recovery of a pure REE precipitate.

Abstract:The separation and enrichment of rare earth elements (REEs) from tailing wastewater is of great significance for the sustainable supply of REEs and environmental remediation. As Al 3+ exhibits extreme similar properties with REE 3+ , selective recovery of REE 3+ from the sulphate tailing wastewater remains a considerable challenge. Based on the difference in the binding stability of REE 3+ and Al 3+ with sulfate ions, the utilization of sulfonic acid groups may provide a promising method for enhancing the selectivity of REE 3+ /Al 3+ in the sulphate aqueous solution. Herein, a series of sulfonic-acid-functionalized hyper-crosslinked polymers (SHCP-Ps) were successfully synthesized through a facile, scalable and one-step method catalyzed by chlorosulfonic acid, which has the advantages of high sulfonic acid density (3.27 mmol/g), specific surface area (1044.6 m 2 /g), abundant micropores and superhydrophilicity. These properties result in SHCP-P exhibiting fast adsorption kinetics (30 min) and high adsorption capacities (106.78 mg/g (La), 111.99 mg/g (Eu) and 126.27 mg/g (Lu)). Additionally, it exhibits extremely high REE 3+ /Al 3+ selectivity (SF(La/Al) = 6929, SF(Eu/Al) = 4810, SF(Lu/Al) = 3003) in sulfate medium, surpassing that of most existing REEs adsorbents. Upon application of SHCP-P to actual wastewater, the recovery rate of total REE 3+ was observed to reach 87 %, while the adsorption rate of Al 3+ was found to be 0. Simultaneously, SHCP-P exhibits both high reusability and magnification synthesis capabilities. The results indicate that SHCP-P has significant potential for industrial applications in the selective recovery of REEs from tailing wastewater.

Abstract:ZIF-8, a metal-organic framework, has large sorption capacities for a series of heavy metals. However, it is difficult to be separated from aqueous solution, limiting its practical application in wastewater treatment . Herein, ZIF-8 was in-situ grown on the polyethyleneimine-functionalized alginate to construct the ZIF-8 @ALG-PEI aerogels with a three-dimensional network structure. This synthesis strategy not only overcomes the above-mentioned defects of ZIF-8, but also provides more functional groups, pores, and channels. The synthesized ZIF-8 @ALG-PEI aerogels exhibit outstanding removal performance towards Pb(II) and Cd(II) with maximum sorption capacity values of 295.986 and 249.838 mg·g −1 , respectively. The sorption of Pb(II) and Cd(II) on ZIF-8 @ALG-PEI is strongly affected by pH, but little influenced by ionic strength. In the multi-component sorption systems, ZIF-8 @ALG-PEI shows better sorption affinity and selectivity for Pb(II) than for Cd(II). The three-dimensional network structure constructed by alginate makes Pb(II) and Cd(II) easier to contact with the surfaces of ZIF-8 @ALG-PEI. The strong surface complexation of the O- and N-containing functional groups provided by ZIF-8 and PEI with Pb(II) and Cd(II) makes the largest contribution to the removal of Pb(II) and Cd(II) by ZIF-8 @ALG-PEI. In summary, the experimental findings of this work prove that the synthesized ZIF-8 @ALG-PEI aerogels have promising applications in practical wastewater treatment.

Abstract:Acidic Mine Waters (AMW) pose significant environmental hazards due to their high acidity and metal content. Traditional treatment methods involve neutralizing the acidity and removing metals as hydroxides, but they generate hazardous sludge. However, a more sustainable approach has emerged, considering AMW as a secondary source for Critical Raw Materials (CRMs), such as Rare Earth Elements (REEs), through a circular treatment scheme integrating selective precipitation and ion exchange. This study focused on recovering REEs, with a total content of 18.6 mg/L, from AMW obtained from the Aznalcóllar open-pit in Sevilla, Spain, which also contained significant amounts of Al (216 mg/L), Fe (47 mg/L), and Zn (548 mg/L). The AMW was initially pre-treated to precipitate Fe and Al with high removal efficiencies (>99.9% and >90%, respectively). Furthermore, optimization studies were conducted to remove Zn as sulphide, achieving removals of Zn, Cd, and Cu >99% under the optimum conditions of NaHS dose and pH. The selective recovery of REEs was carried out using the commercial ion exchange resin impregnated resin containing an organophosphinic functional group (Lewatit TP272) in column mode, with a special focus on understanding the effect of Zn presence. It was observed that the presence of Zn influenced the concentration factor achieved during elution, resulting in at least two times greater concentration when Zn was removed from the solution, impacting the content and purity of the REEs oxalates obtained. This research demonstrates a promising approach for sustainable and efficient recovery of valuable REEs from AMW while mitigating environmental hazards associated with hazardous sludge generation.

Abstract:Biotreatment of acidic rare earth mining wastewater via acidophilic living organisms is a promising approach owing to their high tolerance to high concentrations of rare earth elements (REEs); however, simultaneous removal of both REEs and ammonium is generally hindered since most acidophilic organisms are positively charged. Accordingly, immobilization of acidophilic Galdieria sulphuraria (G. sulphuraria) by calcium alginate to improve its affinity to positively charged REEs has been used for simultaneous bioremoval of REEs and ammonium. The results indicate that 97.19%, 96.19%, and 98.87% of La, Y, and Sm, respectively, are removed by G. sulphuraria beads (GS-BDs). The adsorption of REEs by calcium alginate beads (BDs) and GS-BDs is well fitted by both pseudo first-order (PFO) and pseudo second-order (PSO) kinetic models, implying that adsorption of REEs involves both physical adsorption caused by affinity of functional groups such as –COO– and –OH and chemical adsorption based on ion exchange of Ca2+ with REEs. Notably, GS-BDs exhibit high tolerance to La, Y, and Sm with maximum removal efficiencies of 97.9%, 96.6%, and 99.1%, respectively. Furthermore, the ammonium removal efficiency of GS-BDs is higher than that of free G. sulphuraria cells at an initial ammonium concentration of 100 mg L−1, while the efficiency decreases when initial concentration of ammonium is higher than 150 mg L−1. Last, small size of GS-BDs favors ammonium removal because of their lower mass transfer resistance. This study achieves simultaneous removal of REEs and ammonium from acidic mining drainage, providing a potential strategy for biotreatment of REE tailing wastewater.

Abstract:The extraction process of ion-type rare earth mines generates a significant amount of wastewater containing rare earth elements (REE) with low concentration. It is of great significance to recover REE from the wastewater in order to reduce environmental toxicity and improve the utilization efficiency of rare earth mining. We propose a strategy to enhance the adsorption and enrichment of REE in wastewater by mechanically activating talc, which exposes the hydroxyl groups within the double layered hydroxide to the surface. The effects of various factors, including ball milling time, milling speed, initial pH and initial concentration on rare earth adsorption were investigated. Additionally, the adsorption mechanism of the process was studied by exploring conditions of reaction temperature, reaction time and dosage. The results demonstrated that the adsorption of REE onto the activated talc followed Langmuir isotherm model. At 318.15 K, the maximum adsorption capacity could reach 64.09 mg·g−1. These findings highlight the simple and cost-effective recovery of REE from wastewater, offering significant potential for widespread application in the treatment of rare earth industrial wastewater.

Abstract:Global mining of rare earth elements (REEs) has increased exponentially because of their modern technologies' applications. The recovery of REEs from secondary sources such as industrial wastewater and industrial sludge can reduce the radioactive wastes and greenhouse gases generated during their mining and processing, as well as numerous environmental pollutions from REEs commercial products. In this work, β-cyclodextrin hybrid (3O4) was functionalized with 2-ethylhexyl phosphonic acid mono-2-ethylhexyl (PC88A) doped in silica. The synthesized composite, namely PCDP-M-SHM, performed better toward recovering REEs. The quantitative desorption of adsorbed REEs using dilute acidic solutions was achieved over five cycles without degradation in composite performance. More importantly, PCDP-M-SHM was found to selectively purify REEs from synthetic solutions and industrial wastewater in a continuous adsorption process with enrichment factors ranging from 10 to 30. Finally, PCDP-M-SHM performed well to recover REEs from digested sludge with much higher distribution coefficients than coexisting elements. These results indicate that the synthesized adsorbent is a promising solution for REEs separation and purification from water.

Abstract:Rare earth extraction wastewater (REEW) derived from rare earth (RE) extraction contains high value-added resources, such as magnesium. Therefore, it is highly desirable to recover the minerals from REEW to reuse in the RE extraction process. This study investigated the combined chemical precipitation and direct contact membrane distillation (DCMD) process to treat REEW for minerals recovery. Results showed that 99.7% Mg 2+ in REEW was precipitated as Mg(OH) 2 by adjusting pH of the solution. The MgO was obtained through the calcination of Mg(OH) 2 . The specific surface area (SSA) and reactivity of the calcined MgO decreased with the increase of calcination duration. MgO calcined at 500 °C for 2 h exhibited higher reactivity and SSA of 188.2 m 2 /g. DCMD performance decline was mainly caused by gypsum during treatment of the Mg-separated stream and membrane fouling was effectively mitigated by almost complete removal of Ca 2+ , resulting in the concentrated Na 2 SO 4 solution. Subsequently, Na 2 SO 4 was successfully recovered via freeze crystallization by controlling its solubility. The recovered Na 2 SO 4 exhibited narrow crystal size distribution with mean size of 43.3 μm. With this combined process, it was possible to successfully recover 20.1 g/L MgO, 49.7 g/L Na 2 SO 4 along with 72.6% of the water from REEW. The recovered MgO and Na 2 SO 4 with purity of 98.5% and 99.2%, respectively, achieving industrial grade. The results suggest that the combined technologies, chemical precipitation and DCMD process, can be used as a viable engineering solution for minerals recovery from REEW.

Various microbes used for the recovery of rare earth elements from mine wastewater

Abstract:Microbes used for the recovery of rare earth elements (REEs) from mining wastewater indicated traces of Escherichia coli (E. coli, 2149.6 μg/g), Bacillus sphaericus (1636.6 μg/g), Bacillus mycoides (1469.3 μg/g), and Bacillus cereus (1083.9 μg/g). Of these, E. coli showed an affinity for REEs than non-REEs (Mn and Zn). The amount of heavy REEs adsorbed (1511.1 μg/g) on E. coli was higher than light REEs (638.0 μg/g) due to the process of increasing adsorption with decreasing ionic radius. Additionally, E. coli demonstrated stability in the recovery of REEs from mining wastewater, as evidenced by 4 cycles. SEM-EDS, XPS and FTIR showed that REEs had a disruptive effect on cells, REEs absorbed and desorbed on the cell surface including ion exchange with ions such as Na+, ligand binding with functional groups like -NH2. Finally, the cost assessment confirmed the economically feasible of E. coli in recovery of REEs from mining wastewater.

Abstract:A low-cost and environmental-friendly sodium alginate-melamine@zeolitic imidazolate framework-67 (SA-ME@ZIF-67) adsorbent was fabricated by chemical grafting and in situ growth for the removal of lead ions in wastewater. Firstly, melamine (ME) was grafted onto sodium alginate (SA) by amide reaction, and then SA-ME was dropped into a solution of calcium chloride to form hydrogel bead, and ZIF-67 was grown on the SA-ME hydrogel bead by the in situ growth method. The SA-ME@ZIF-67 adsorbent was characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and X-ray diffraction. The SA-ME@ZIF-67 adsorbent was used to effectively adsorb Pb(II) from aqueous solutions. The initial concentrations of lead ions, adsorbent dose, initial pH of lead ion solution, temperature, and adsorption time for the material were optimized. The adsorption isotherms and kinetics fitted to Langmuir isotherm model ( R 2 = 0.9281, 0.9420, and 0.9623 at the temperatures of 288.15 K, 298.15 K, and 308.15 K, respectively) and pseudo-second-order kinetic model ( R 2 = 0.9901) respectively. According to the Langmuir model at 308.15 K, the maximum adsorption capacity of the adsorbent for Pb(II) was 634.99 mg/g. The recycling application of the adsorbent was possible as it was easily collected and reused after five adsorption-regeneration cycles. In addition, the Pb(II) in real wastewater samples has been efficiently removed using the fabricated hydrogel. The results showed that the SA-ME@ZIF-67 adsorbent had high adsorption capacity, removal efficiency, and easy recyclability for Pb(II).

Abstract:Membrane dispersion micro-extractors were used both in gas-liquid-liquid system to realize the intensification of REEs extraction at high phase ratio and also in stripping process to recover the rare earth elements (REEs) with low concentration (< 100 mg/L) from industrial waste water. The effects of three phase (organic, aqueous, gas) flow rates on the extraction efficiency were investigated. The results indicated that 2 m of the out-let channel was required to reach 95% or above, and the overall volume mass transfer coefficient K(L)a was enhanced around 3.0-4.5 times compared with liquid-liquid system. The results of stripping process revealed that the stripping efficiency of Nd (III) could reach 98% and the total enrichment factor was 200. Finally, the mixture of REEs was employed as a model of industrial raffinate. The total enrichment factor was 150, which exhibited a potential method for the effective utilization of REEs from waste water.

Abstract:Ion-adsorbing rare earth tailings (IRETs) contain a large amount of clay minerals, which are a potential source of silicon and aluminum for the preparation of zeolite materials. The complexity of the tailings' composition and the impurity composition are the main difficulties in the controllable preparation of zeolite. Herein, IRETs were treated by classification activation technology for the preparation of IRET-ZEO, which was used for the removal of heavy metal Pb2+ in water. A new method of resource utilization of ion-type rare earth tailings is realized by "treating waste with waste". The results showed that the IRETs were classified and then thermally activated, and the optimal activation parameter was calcination at 850 °C for 1 h. The optimal NaOH concentration used in the crystallization process was 5 mol/L, with a crystallization time of 3 h and a crystallization temperature of 85 °C, and the crystallization product was zeolite A. The removal rate of the Pb2+ solution with an initial concentration of 100 mg/L was as high as 96.7% in an acidic solution with a pH value from 2 to 5.5. In particular, when the solution pH was higher than 4.2, the adsorption rate of Pb2+ was close to 100%. The IRET-ZEO showed a fast adsorption rate (5 min to reach adsorption equilibrium), a large adsorption capacity (378.35 mg/g), excellent acid resistance, and selectivity and regenerability for Pb2+. This work provides a new strategy for the green resource utilization of IRETs and the treatment of lead-containing wastewater.

Abstract:The efficient enrichment and reutilization of phosphate from natural water still remains a daunting challenge to satisfy the increasingly stringent phosphate discharge criteria. In response to this problem, the presented study successfully synthesizes a series of magnetic zeolitic imidazolate framework-8@engineering nanomaterials (ZIF8@ENMs) via a two-step hydrothermal and coprecipitation method by facilely growing ZIF8 and/or Fe3O4 on various functional ENMs. Structure morphology, chemical composition and hysteresis curve characterizations demonstrate the successful formation of magnetic Fe3O4-ZIF8@ENM. Amongst the prepared magnetic ZIF8@ENMs hybrids, the Fe3O4-ZIF8@ENMs possessing massive hydroxyl groups is demonstrated to harvest the maximum adsorption capacity of 441.7 mg g-1 under neutral condition. Such-acquired adsorption capacity evidently surpass state-of-the-art adsorbents. Systematic assessment of the chemical condition effects on phosphate removal, revealing its conspicuous merits of robust pH independence (94.63-98.20%), high selectivity pinpointing phosphate within complex cations, ease-of-separation and satisfactory recycle. The outstanding performance of magnetic ZIF8@ENMs are mainly derived from the formed strong ZnOP, FeOP and electrostatic interactions between phosphate and adsorbents. Along this line, designing magnetic MOFs-based hybrids towards phosphate are anticipated to be promising avenues for advanced treatment of phosphate-like contaminants and efficient recycle in practical applications.
