Abstract:Slow-light devices are able to significantly enhance light-matter interaction due to the reduced group velocity of light, but a very low group velocity is usually achieved in a narrow bandwidth, accompanied by extreme sensitivity to imperfections that causes increased disorder-induced attenuation. Recent theories have suggested an ideal solution to this problem - unidirectional chiral photonic states, previously discovered in structures known as photonic topological insulators, not only resist backscattering from imperfections but can also be slowed down in the entire topological bandgap with multiple windings in the Brillouin zone. Here, we report on the experimental demonstration of broadband topological slow light in a photonic topological insulator. When coupled with periodic resonators that form flat bands, the chiral photonic states can wind many times around the Brillouin zone, achieving an ultra-low group velocity in the entire topological bandgap. This demonstration extends the scope of topological photonics into slow light engineering and opens a unique avenue in the dispersion manipulation of chiral photonic states.

Abstract:Periodically driven systems have displayed a variety of fascinating phenomena without analogies in static systems, which enrich the classification of quantum phases of matter and stimulate a wide range of research interests. Here, we employ discrete-time quantum walks to investigate a nontrivial topological effect unique to a two-dimensional periodically driven system: chiral edge states can exist at the interface of Floquet insulators whose Chern numbers vanish. Thanks to a resource-saving and flexible fiber-loop architecture, we realize inhomogeneous two-dimensional quantum walks up to 25 steps, over an effective 51 x 51 lattice with tunable local parameters. Spin-polarized chiral edge states are observed at the boundary of two distinct quantum walk domains. Our results contribute to establishing a well-controlled platform for exploring nontrivial topological phases.

Abstract:Edge states in topological photonic systems have the robust unidirectional propagation feature which originates from the topological nature of the bulk band dispersion. In this work, we propose a topological photonic crystal (PC) waveguide that is formed by introducing an air gap in an all-dielectric PC with $C_{6v}$ symmetry. The dispersion of the line defect states is tunable by varying the width of the air gap. Based on their field distributions, the states can be classified into even- and odd-symmetric states. The even-symmetric states are found to be the nontrivial topological edge states and exhibit pseudospin-locking unidirectional propagation property. By introducing disorders to the waveguide, these states are proven to be robust with well suppressed backscattering.

Abstract:Slow-light waveguides can strongly enhance light-matter interaction, but suffer from narrow bandwidth, increased backscattering, and Anderson localization. Edge states in photonic topological insulators resist backscattering and localization, but typically cross the bandgap over a single Brillouin zone, meaning that slow group velocity implies narrow-band operation. Here we show theoretically that this can be circumvented via an edge termination that causes the edge state to wind many times around the Brillouin zone, making it both slow and broadband.

Abstract:Slow light in topological valley photonic crystal structures offers new possibilities to enhance light-matter interaction. We report a topological cavity based on slow light topological edge mode for broadband Purcell enhancement. The topological edge modes with large group indices over 100 can be realized with a bearded interface between two topologically distinct valley photonic crystals, featuring the greatly enhanced Purcell factor because of the increased local density of states. In the slow light regime, the topological cavity supports much more cavity modes with higher quality factor than that in the fast light regime, which is both demonstrated theoretically and experimentally. We demonstrate the cavity enables the broadband Purcell enhancement together with substantial Purcell factor, benefiting from dense cavity modes with high quality factor in a wide spectral range. It has great benefit to the realization of high-efficiency quantum-dot-based single-photon sources and entangled-photon sources with less restriction on spectral match. Such topological cavity could serve as a significant building block toward the development of photonic integrated circuits with embedded quantum emitters.

Abstract:The topological bound states are limited to one pair in traditional one-dimensional (1D) topological chiral models as the winding number can only take the value of 0 or 1. It was increased to 2 or 3 via long-range couplings (LRCs) that were restricted to second- or third-order in recent experimental or theoretical researches. How to generate larger winding number to manipulate more topological bound states remains a challenge. Here, we propose an effective method by introducing arbitrary Nth order LRC stronger than the sum of other order couplings. The resulting winding number has been computed by getting the winding loop's envelope in parameter space. The coupling-inverted 1D photonic topological insulators supporting up to three pairs of highly localized multiple topological bound states are realized by fabricating photonic lattices with multi-layer waveguide arrays. Furthermore, these topological bound states are closely spaced, offering a promising implementation approach of multimode topological lasers in gain media. Our work highlights the advantages of LRCs in manipulating the topological phases of matter.

Abstract:Recently the possibility of achieving one-way backscatter immune transportation of light by mimicking the topological order present within certain solid state systems, such as topological insulators, has received much attention. Thus far however, demonstrations of non-trivial topology in photonics have relied on photonic crystals with precisely engineered lattice structures, periodic on the scale of the operational wavelength and composed of finely tuned, complex materials. Here we propose a novel effective medium approach towards achieving topologically protected photonic surface states robust against disorder on all length scales and for a wide range of material parameters. Remarkably, the non-trivial topology of our metamaterial design results from the Berry curvature arising from the transversality of electromagnetic waves in a homogeneous medium. Our investigation therefore acts to bridge the gap between the advancing field of topological band theory and classical optical phenomena such as the Spin Hall effect of light. The effective medium route to topological phases will pave the way for highly compact one-way transportation of electromagnetic waves in integrated photonic circuits.

Abstract:Valley kink states and valley-polarized chiral edge states, whose topologically protected properties have great application potential in high-speed information processing and communication, have recently become important frontiers in topological photonics. However, valley photonic topological insulators mainly support single-type topological states through breaking lattice spatial symmetry. It remains difficult for different types of topological states to coexist in a specific photonic system. In this paper, we propose judiciously designed substrate-integrated topological photonic crystals (but without metal vias) with C3 symmetry that can support valley kink states and valley-polarized chiral edge states in different waveguide channels. Via numerical simulations and measurements, we demonstrate the robust transmission of both valley kink states and valley-polarized chiral edge states through sharp corners and we show high-efficiency coupling between classical guided waves and topological waves. More importantly, we achieve smooth transitions between chiral and trivial edge states, trivial edge states and valley kink states, as well as valley kink states and valley-polarized chiral edge states by bridging different waveguide channels. Abstract:topological states, providing a new way to bypass the diffraction limits and against fabrication disorders, have attracted intense attention. In addition to the near-field coupling and band topology, the localized surface plasmonic resonance modes can be manipulated with far-field degrees of freedom (DoFs), such as polarization. However, changing the frequency of the topological edge states with different polarized incident waves remains a challenge, which has led to significant interest in multiplexed radiative topological devices. Here, we report the realization of polarization-wavelength locked plasmonic topological edge states on the Su-Schrieffer-Heeger (SSH) model. We theoretically and numerically show that such phenomenon is based on two mechanisms, i.e., the splitting in the spectra of plasmonic topological edge states with different intrinsic parity DoF and projecting the farfield polarizations to the parity of lattice modes. These results promise applications in robust optical emitters and multiplexed photonic devices.

Abstract:Abstract Topological slow light exhibits potential to achieve stopped light by virtue of its widely known robust and non-reciprocal behaviours. Conventional approach for achieving topological slow light often involves flat-band engineering without disentangling the underlying physical mechanism. Here, we unveil the presence of counter-propagating waves within valley kink states as the distinctive hallmark of the slow light topological photonic waveguides. These counter-propagating waves, supported by topological vortices along glide-symmetric interface, provide significant flexibility for controlling the slowness of light. We tune the group velocity of light by changing the spatial separation between vortices adjacent to the glide-symmetric interface. We also dynamically control the group delay by introducing a non-Hermitian defect using photoexcitation to adjust the relative strength of the counter-propagating waves. This study introduces active slow light topological photonic device on a silicon chip, opening new horizons for topological photon transport through defects, topological light-matter interactions, nonlinear topological photonics, and topological quantum photonics.

Abstract:Second-order topological insulators can be characterized by their bulk polarization, which is believed to be intrinsically connected to the center of the Wannier function. In this study, we demonstrate the existence of second-order topological insulators that feature a pair of partially degenerate photonic bands. These arise from the nonsymmorphic glide symmetry in an all-dielectric photonic crystal. The center of the maximally localized Wannier function (MLWF) is consistently located at the origin but is not equivalent with respect to the sum of constituent polarizations. As a result, topological corner modes can be identified by the distinctly hybridized MLWFs that truncate at the sample boundary. Through full-wave numerical simulations paired with microwave experiments, the second-order topology is clearly confirmed and characterized. These topological corner states exhibit notably unique modal symmetries, which are made possible by the inversion of the Wannier bands. Our results provide an alternative approach to explore higher-order topological physics with significant potential for applications in integrated and quantum photonics.

Abstract:Topological photonic valley-Hall states, regarded as an excellent information carrier, have attracted a great attention in recent years due to binary degree of freedom (DOF) of valley states. In order to enhance and promote miniaturization and functionalization of integrated photonic devices using the valley DOF, researchers have performed a plethora of wok in both theory and experiment recently. In this work, we theoretically propose a kind of all-dielectric valley photonic crystals (VPCs) with triangular lattice composed of silicon rods, and systematically analyze and investigate two different domain interfaces (bearded-stack and zigzag-stack) constructed by the VPCs with opposite valley Chern numbers. Topological valley-Hall states, such as valley-polarized kink states and slow light states, are demonstrated and realized in the two domain interfaces, such as valley-polarized kink states in the low gap and slow light states in the high gap for the bearded-stack, and valley-polarized dual-band kink states and slow light states in the high gap for the zigzag-stack. Both the slow light states and the valley-polarized kink states have their own merits in the zigzag and bearded interfaces, respectively, e.g., valley-polarized dual-band kink states with broadband and high-energy-density light filed in the zigzag-stack, and slow light states with group-dispersionless and large group index in the bearded-stack. Additionally, the waveguide interfaces could be arbitrarily shifted by sliding and translating half lattice constant along X axis. Hence they can be easily manipulated and automatically controlled by external coding in practice application. Finally, our work provides a novel platform for applications in topological on-chip photonic devices with multifunction and specific light fields with field enhancement and high-energy-density transport.

Abstract:Wideband dispersion-free slow light in chirped-slot photonic-crystal coupled waveguides is proposed and theoretically investigated in detail. By systematically analyzing the dependence of band shape on various structure parameters, unique inflection points in the key photonic band with approximate zero group velocity can be obtained in an optimized slot photonic-crystal coupled waveguide. By simply chirping the widths of the photonic-crystal waveguides in the optimized structure, wideband (up to 20 nm) slow-light with optical confinement in the low dielectric slot is demonstrated numerically with relative temporal pulse-width spreading well below 8% as obtained from two-dimensional finite-difference time-domain simulations. The wideband slow-light operation of the proposed structures would offer significant potential for novel compact high-speed optical-signal-processing devices in silicon-based systems. Abstract:Two-dimensional (2D) coupled resonant optical waveguide (CROW), exhibiting topological edge states, provides an efficient platform for designing integrated topological photonic devices. In this paper, we propose an experimentally feasible design of 2D honeycomb CROW photonic structure. The characteristic optical system possesses two-fold and three-fold Dirac points at different positions in the Brillouin zone. The effective gauge fields implemented by the intrinsic pseudo-spin-orbit interaction open up topologically nontrivial bandgaps through the Dirac points. Spatial lattice geometries allow destructive wave interference, leading to a dispersionless, nearly-flat energy band in the vicinity of the three-fold Dirac point in the telecommunication frequency regime. This nontrivial nearly-flat band yields topologically protected edge states. The pertinent physical effects brought about due to non-Hermitian gain/loss medium into the honeycomb CROW device are discussed. The generalized gain-loss lattice with parity-time symmetry decouples the gain and the loss at opposite zigzag edges, leading to purely gain or loss edge channels. Meanwhile, the gain and loss effects on the armchair boundary cancel each other, giving rise to dissipationless edge states in non-Hermitian optical systems. These characteristics underpin the fundamental importance as well as the potential applications in various optical devices such as polarizers, optical couplers, beam splitters and slow light delay lines.
Experimental Observation of Multi-Mode Chiral Edge State

Abstract:Electromagnetic (EM) topological states have been drawing lots of attentions in both physical and engineering field for their good performance in optical isolator, circulator, etc.. As a resemblance of signal carrier in modern communication, the excited EM chiral edge state (CES) is immune to the impurity of transmission path without any backward scattering, providing a potential for future transoceanic communication with no require of repeaters of amplifiers. Mimicking modulation and demodulation of FDM, in this work we realize a resemble function in photonic system by constructing multi-mode CES. Different from most of the presented work with only one CES mode, in this paper we design and experimentally observed a two-mode CES. Such multi-mode CES resembles frequency division multiplexing (FDM). If we consider real space position in PC as the time and the wave vector as frequency. By designing a magnetic photonic crystal (MPC) with square lattice, we obtained eight Dirac points existing at non-high symmetry point in Brillioun zone due to mirror symmetry by keeping time-reversal symmetry. It is demonstrated all Dirac points are unbuckled to open a full gap in the effect of bias magnetic field. Once the MPC is truncated by metal cladding, two-mode edge states appear inside the gap as shown. At an operating frequency, two EM waves are excited with different wavelengths (wavevector) but the same transmission direction. The experimental data verify such two-mode edge states are unidirectional and robust against the scatterings from disorders of various kinds. By introducing the Fast Fourier Transform (FFT) algorithm in EM system, we successfully obtain the band structure of CES basing on the field profile measured. Later, imitating the demodulation in communication engineering, we theoretically propose a method to eliminate one of modes by introducing two feed with same magnitude and phase but located at different positions.

Abstract:Topological protection in photonics offers new prospects for confining and guiding light waves. Up to now, most reported works on topological photonics have focused on the realization of topological phases originally found in condensed matter systems. However, photonic systems can possess a distinguishing topology that differs from their quantum electronic counterparts due to the vectorial nature of light. Here, dual-polarization topological photonic states are theoretically predicted and experimentally demonstrated at optical frequencies on the all-dielectric silicon-on-insulator platform. The topological band gaps opening at K/K ' valleys for both TE- and TM-polarizations in the properly designed breathing Kagome photonic crystal slabs are demonstrated, leading to dual-polarization topological edge states below the light cone. The topological edge states are directly observed by imagining the near fields with scattering scanning near-field microscopy. In addition, the significant improvement of the quality factor of topological states via engineering the transition near the boundary along with the robustness of edge states is presented. The proposed dual-polarization topological states and the improvement of quality factor via boundary profile engineering paves the way toward novel applications of topological photonics for realizing integrated polarization-dependent applications such as polarization multiplexing photonic devices and on-chip chiral quantum optics. Topological photonics offers new prospects for confining and guiding light waves. For the first time, dual-polarization topological edge states are experimentally demonstrated on the silicon-on-insulator platform at optical frequencies. The topological edge states are directly observed by imaging the near fields with scattering scanning near-field optical microscopy.image

Abstract:Research on the remarkable characteristics of topological phases and topological phase transitions in various topological systems has been performed. In this paper, we propose a two-dimensional topological system composed of triangle photonic crystals (PCs) with C-3 point group symmetry, which hosts both regularly multiple fourfold-degenerate double Dirac cones and topological transitions in all-dielectric PC systems. By applying the tight-binding model to our system, we reveal the mechanism for topological transitions in the present configuration manufactured of conventional silicon material. Topological edge states at the common boundary of two different topological regions are demonstrated, which indicates that electromagnetic wave can propagate unidirectionally and robustly along the boundary with eximious transmission performance. Further, we manifest that topological edge states characterized by pseudospin-dependent unidirectional edge transport and have robustness against commonly minor defects. This flexible topological system demonstrates more abundant physics principles compared with previous research, which can be used to explore different topological phenomena and be implemented in integrated optical devices.

Abstract:Topological slow-light in a one-dimensional conjugated topological photonic crystal (CTPhC) is presented. The study shows that extremely slow-light of 26.57 m/s group velocity and 7.52 × 10−7 s group delay are achieved in the proposed CTPhC with 20 μm thick, which is better than traditional approaches of slow-light. Results also show that there are two significant sensitive parameters for slow-light in the CTPhC. Robust and ultra-slow-light is achieved as the refractive index contrast of materials and the number of layers increases. It is worth noting that the CTPhC has a symmetric and wide operating range photonic bandgap, which has better slow-light effects than typical topological photonic crystal. It is expected that the CTPhC can provide an efficient approach to constructing robust and ultra-slow-light devices.
