Abstract:Edge states in topological photonic systems have the robust unidirectional propagation feature which originates from the topological nature of the bulk band dispersion. In this work, we propose a topological photonic crystal (PC) waveguide that is formed by introducing an air gap in an all-dielectric PC with $C_{6v}$ symmetry. The dispersion of the line defect states is tunable by varying the width of the air gap. Based on their field distributions, the states can be classified into even- and odd-symmetric states. The even-symmetric states are found to be the nontrivial topological edge states and exhibit pseudospin-locking unidirectional propagation property. By introducing disorders to the waveguide, these states are proven to be robust with well suppressed backscattering.

Abstract:Understanding and controlling chirality are important because of its ubiquity in nature. In recent years, we have witnessed the rapid development of chiral metamaterials with exceptional light-manipulating capabilities. Here, we present a design for photonic heterostructures in chiral photonics, demonstrating that photonic heterostructures stacked from achiral metasurfaces can create distinctive chiroptical functionalities. Analyses based on the symmetry group and microscopic dipolar interactions at two-dimensional boundaries reveal the implicit mechanism of the interlayer coupling in photonic heterostructures. By flip stacking, the photonic heterostructure gives rise to an asymmetric chiral phase from achiral composites, and hence, provides the full spin-flipped scattering of incident photons. Incident electromagnetic waves with arbitrary polarization orientations can be efficiently separated into two orthogonal circularly polarized ones with orthogonal trajectories, leading to an ideal circular beam splitter. This effect is experimentally demonstrated at microwave frequencies via the measurement of a scattering matrix. Due to its generality and scalability, we expect the methodology of photonic heterostructure might open up an alternative pathway for exploring intriguing and advanced metamaterials over a broad wavelength range.
Coexistence of Chiral and Antichiral Edge States in Photonic Crystals

Abstract:This study reports a modified Haldane model that supports transitions between valley and Chern topological phases in photonic crystals. Berry curvatures of this system can be flexibly diffused, converged, or flipped by endowing different model parameters, thus exhibiting exotic topological interface/edge behaviors, such as topological bound states with ideally zero dispersion. Importantly, the coexistence of chiral and antichiral edge states preserved simultaneously by valley and Chern topological phases is achieved by splicing together two kinds of topological structures as an entirety. It further employs a honeycomb lattice comprising gyromagnetic and ceramic cylinders at microwave frequencies, where inversion and time-reversal symmetries can be flexibly manipulated. Topological interface transport is demonstrated, including two opposite signs of group velocities jointly protected by topologically distinct regimes. These results bridge the gap between valley and Chern topological physics and shed light on developing reconfigurable integrated device applications for classical (quantum) information processing and photonic computing. The coexistence of chiral and antichiral edge states is proposed for photonic crystals by a modified Haldane model. Abstract:Valley kink states and valley-polarized chiral edge states, whose topologically protected properties have great application potential in high-speed information processing and communication, have recently become important frontiers in topological photonics. However, valley photonic topological insulators mainly support single-type topological states through breaking lattice spatial symmetry. It remains difficult for different types of topological states to coexist in a specific photonic system. In this paper, we propose judiciously designed substrate-integrated topological photonic crystals (but without metal vias) with C3 symmetry that can support valley kink states and valley-polarized chiral edge states in different waveguide channels. Via numerical simulations and measurements, we demonstrate the robust transmission of both valley kink states and valley-polarized chiral edge states through sharp corners and we show high-efficiency coupling between classical guided waves and topological waves. More importantly, we achieve smooth transitions between chiral and trivial edge states, trivial edge states and valley kink states, as well as valley kink states and valley-polarized chiral edge states by bridging different waveguide channels. Influence of Bias Magnetic Field Direction on Band Structure of Magnetic Photonic Crystal and Its Role in Constructing Topological Edge States

Abstract:The topological transitions in two-dimensional photonic crystals (PCs) originate from the opening-closing-reopening of the bandgap, accompanied with the band order inversion. The topological bandgap in magnetic PC can be created by applying a bias magnetic field or deforming the geometry structure of the PC. In this paper, we demonstrate that the direction of the bias magnetic field also plays a key role in modifying the band structure in a two-dimensional magnetic PC. The results show that by reversing the direction of the bias magnetic field, the eigenstates with the same parity may exchange their orders in the band structure. We investigate this type of band order exchange in the applications of constructing topological edge states and its influence on the properties of edge states. We find, for example, reversing the direction of the bias magnetic field can create two almost degenerated topological edge modes, which propagate in the same direction but have opposite orbital angular momenta. The edge modes and their characteristics can be determined by the schematics of the band orders for the photonic crystals on the two sides of the boundary. The relative relationship of the band orders determines the emergence of the topological edge states, the number of edge states, and edge modes' properties such as the orbital angular momentum and group velocity. Also, it affects the transmission efficiency of the electromagnetic wave on the boundary. The direction effect of the bias magnetic field on band order exchange presented in this paper provides us with a new way to change the feature of topological edge states and helps us to better understand the influence of band order on topological phases of photonic crystals. It may have potential applications, such as in pseudo-spin splitter and reflection-free one-way optical switch.
Chiral photonic topological states in Penrose quasicrystals

Abstract:Electromagnetic topological edge states typically are created in photonic systems with crystalline symmetry and these states emerge because of the topological feature of bulk Bloch bands in momentum space according to the bulk-edge correspondence principle. In this work, we demonstrate the existence of chiral topological electromagnetic edge states in Penrose-tiled photonic quasicrystals made of magneto-optical materials, without relying on the concept of bulk Bloch bands in momentum space. Despite the absence of bulk Bloch bands, which naturally defiles the conventional definition of topological invariants in momentum space characterizing these states, such as the Chern number, we show that some bandgaps in these photonic quasicrystals still could host unidirectional topological electromagnetic edge states immune to backscattering in both cylinders-in-air and holes-in-slab configurations. Employing a real-space topological invariant based on the Bott index, our calculations reveal that the bandgaps hosting these chiral topological edge states possess a nontrivial Bott index of $\pm 1$, depending on the direction of the external magnetic field. Our work opens the door to the study of topological states in photonic quasicrystals.

Topological Antichiral Surface States in a Magnetic Weyl Photonic Crystal

Abstract:Chiral edge states that propagate oppositely at two parallel strip edges are a hallmark feature of Chern insulators which were first proposed in the celebrated two-dimensional (2D) Haldane model. Subsequently, counterintuitive antichiral edge states that propagate in the same direction at two parallel strip edges were discovered in a 2D modified Haldane model. Recently, chiral surface states, the 2D extension of one-dimensional (1D) chiral edge states, have also been observed in a photonic analogue of a 3D Haldane model. However, despite many recent advances in antichiral edge states and chiral surface states, antichiral surface states, the 2D extension of 1D antichiral edge states, have never been realized in any physical system. Here, we report the experimental observation of antichiral surface states by constructing a 3D modified Haldane model in a magnetic Weyl photonic crystal with two pairs of frequency-shifted Weyl points (WPs). The 3D magnetic Weyl photonic crystal consists of gyromagnetic cylinders with opposite magnetization in different triangular sublattices of a 3D honeycomb lattice. Using microwave field-mapping measurements, unique properties of antichiral surface states have been observed directly, including the antichiral robust propagation, tilted surface dispersion, a single open Fermi arc connecting two projected WPs and a single Fermi loop winding around the surface Brillouin zone (BZ). These results extend the scope of antichiral topological states and enrich the family of magnetic Weyl semimetals.
Symmetrical and Anti-Symmetrical Topological Edge States Based on Two-Dimensional Magneto-Optical Photonic Crystals

Abstract:We report our design of a topological waveguide at the boundary of two adjacent magneto-optical photonic crystals with opposite magnetic biases which can simultaneously support symmetrical and anti-symmetrical topological edge states. In this non-reciprocal topological photonic model, the symmetrical and anti-symmetrical topological edge states possess the same direction of backscattering-immune chiral energy propagation. However, their directions of phase propagation are opposite, i.e., forward phase propagation for the symmetrical state while backward for the anti-symmetrical one. Using a finite-size structure, we can selectively couple one topological edge state to free space via oblique incidence to realize one-way transmission and reflection in a compact configuration. Furthermore, we design an all-photonic tunable splitter by hybridizing these two topological states. Based on manipulating the phase propagation of topological edge states, our work may offer promising applications in tunable topological photonics and extend the scope of topological photonics.
Photonic antichiral edge states induced by magnetic surface plasmon resonance

Abstract:Chiral edge states are a hallmark feature of photonic Chern insulators, where waves propagate in opposite directions along two parallel edges of a strip sample. Different from the chiral edge states, at recently discovered counterintuitive antichiral edge states, where waves propagate in the same direction on the two edges, the antichiral edge states are modeled by the modified Haldane model. Here, we theoretically propose, experimentally observe the antichiral edge states induced by magnetic surface plasmon resonance, and realize the antichiral edge states in a gyromagnetic photonic crystal with rectangular lattice. Through microwave experiments and photonic band calculations, the unique properties of this antichiral edge states have been confirmed, including edge dispersion without Dirac points frequencies shift, unidirectional transmission without ancillary cladding, and the operating frequency of the edge states that can be flexibly controlled by the external magnetic field. These results extend the scope of antichiral edge states and supplement the current understanding of antichiral edge states.

Abstract:Though topologically protected one-way edge states are determined by the bulk mode of the magnetic photonic crystal (MPC), the edge profile can influence topological edge states and associated wave propagation since the waves at the states are localized at the edge of the photonic crystal. By truncating the honeycomb structured MPC at the same side but at different cuts, we show the MPC slab will present different topological edge band, and the associate transmission of a one-way surface wave will change a lot. We demonstrate the good transmission efficiency of the one-way surface wave needs a good field localization at the edge of MPC at the topological edge states, and bearded edge has better field localization ability than the zigzag one in a wider frequency range. In addition to the different cuts, one can modify the topological edge state by tuning the radius of outmost rods of the slab or the material parameters of the rods, which does not affect the topological state of the MPC. Our study provides an effective means to improve the performances of the devices based on topological edge states of the materials, such as one-way waveguide.
Circularly polarized topological edge states derived from optical Weyl points in semiconductor-based chiral woodpile photonic crystals

Abstract:The polarizations of topological edge modes in the vicinity of optical Weyl points were numerically studied in chiral photonic crystals. We investigated two kinds of rotationally stacked woodpile structures in which planar rod arrays were vertically stacked one-by-one with an in-plane rotation angle of 60 or 45 degrees. Both structures showed pairs of optical Weyl points having topological numbers of opposite signs for photonic bands in low orders. Topological edge states derived from the Weyl points appeared below the light line, and were strongly confined at the air interfaces in a length shorter than the wavelength. Their polarizations in a direction perpendicular to the propagation direction were found to be one particular circular polarization that depended on the handedness of the structural chirality. Since these chiral photonic crystals can be fabricated using semiconductor materials such as GaAs or Si, the obtained robust planar waveguides for circularly polarized light at the interface between air and the semiconductor structure can be useful not only in photonics but also in spintronics or quantum information technology through spin-photon interfaces.

Abstract:The realization and modulation of high-order topological states in three-dimensional (3D) photonic crystals (PCs) hold great significance for practical applications in optical communication, optical information processing, and optical computing. However, they have encountered technological challenges due to the difficulty in achieving a complete bandgap in 3D PCs. To address this issue, we introduce a design for a 3D PC based on the Su–Schrieffer–Heeger (SSH) model that exhibits distinctive topological surface states, topological hinge states, and topological corner states. Furthermore, these three types of topological states can be interconverted through the modulation of magnetic field because the topological states are closed and extremely sensitive to the structure, which are modulated by the magnetic field. This intriguing capability holds potential applications in the manipulation of optical flow, optical signal storage, and magnetic field sensors.

Abstract:Chiral edge states are a hallmark feature of two-dimensional topological materials. Such states must propagate along the edges of the bulk either clockwise or counterclockwise, and thus produce oppositely propagating edge states along the two parallel edges of a strip sample. However, recent theories have predicted a counterintuitive picture, where the two edge states at the two parallel strip edges can propagate in the same direction; these anomalous topological edge states are named as antichiral edge states. Here, we report the experimental observation of antichiral edge states in a gyromagnetic photonic crystal. The crystal consists of gyromagnetic cylinders in a honeycomb lattice, with the two triangular sublattices magnetically biased in opposite directions. With microwave measurement, unique properties of antichiral edge states have been observed directly, which include tilted dispersion, chiral-like robust propagation in samples with certain shapes, and 100% scattering into backward bulk states at certain terminations. These results extend and supplement the current understanding of chiral edge states.

Abstract:Abstract Two-dimensional topological photonic crystals have rapidly emerged as a recent and fascinating branch of photonic research. However, most of them were limited to a specific type of polarization, TE or TM polarization. Here, we explored the dual-polarization topological phases in two-dimensional magnetic photonic crystal (PC) which are composed of ferrite rod clusters in the plasma background. Under the perturbations of the bias magnetic field and/or the cluster distortion in the unit cell, the PC exhibited dual-polarization topological phases, including the quantum Hall (QH) phase, the higher-order quantum spin Hall (HO-QSH) phase and the conventional insulator (CI) phase. We studied the topological nature of these phases by the Wilson loop, Chern number, and unidirectional edge states. Intriguingly, we showed that the HO-QSH phases could present in PC of C 3 v symmetry instead of being restricted to C 6 v symmetry. The lower symmetry enlarges the gap in the edge states, which helps for the emergence of corner states. By continuously deforming the unit cell configuration, we demonstrated the phase transition in the system was dual-polarization. Our results extend the topological phases in the PCs and pave the way for the dual-polarization topological devices and their applications.

Abstract:Research on the remarkable characteristics of topological phases and topological phase transitions in various topological systems has been performed. In this paper, we propose a two-dimensional topological system composed of triangle photonic crystals (PCs) with C-3 point group symmetry, which hosts both regularly multiple fourfold-degenerate double Dirac cones and topological transitions in all-dielectric PC systems. By applying the tight-binding model to our system, we reveal the mechanism for topological transitions in the present configuration manufactured of conventional silicon material. Topological edge states at the common boundary of two different topological regions are demonstrated, which indicates that electromagnetic wave can propagate unidirectionally and robustly along the boundary with eximious transmission performance. Further, we manifest that topological edge states characterized by pseudospin-dependent unidirectional edge transport and have robustness against commonly minor defects. This flexible topological system demonstrates more abundant physics principles compared with previous research, which can be used to explore different topological phenomena and be implemented in integrated optical devices.
Reconfigurable chiral edge states in synthetic dimensions on an integrated photonic chip

Abstract:Chiral edge state is a hallmark of topological physics, which has drawn significant attention across quantum mechanics, condensed matter and optical systems. Recently, synthetic dimensions have emerged as ideal platforms for investigating chiral edge states in multiple dimensions, overcoming the limitations of real space. In this work, we demonstrate reconfigurable chiral edge states via synthetic dimensions on an integrated photonic chip. These states are realized by coupling two frequency lattices with opposite pseudospins, which are subjected to programmable artificial gauge potential and long-range coupling within a thin-film lithium niobate microring resonator. Within this system, we are able to implement versatile strategies to observe and steer the chiral edge states, including the realization and frustration of the chiral edge states in a synthetic Hall ladder, the generation of imbalanced chiral edge currents, and the regulation of chiral behaviors as chirality, single-pseudospin enhancement, and complete suppression. This work provides a reconfigurable integrated photonic platform for simulating and steering chiral edge states in synthetic space, paying the way for the realization of high-dimensional and programmable topological photonic systems on chip.

Abstract:We propose the direction-tunable chiral photonic propagation of spontaneous emission based on magnetic helicity and finite-size effect in a topological honeycomb photonic crystal slab. The chiral edge state channels are excited by emitters with magnetic polarization due to the ${C}_{6}$ symmetry, where their propagation directions are tuned by the emitter's position on the magnetic helicity pattern. Meanwhile, the finite size of the honeycomb photonic crystal brings chirality oscillation, which also decides the chirality of photonic propagation. This method of controlling chiral transport in two-dimensional designs can be extended to a three-dimensional silicon-based photonic crystal slab containing a silver split ring resonator as the emitter providing spontaneous emission, which is convenient to fabricate via existing nanotechnology. Moreover, we show the magnetic Purcell effect with chiral transport in the three-dimensional topological PC slab structure. Our research reduces the threshold of on-chip photonic transmission under topological protection, which is helpful for single-photon sources, photonic integrated chip manufacturing, and quantum information processing.
Unique Huygens-Fresnel electromagnetic transportation of chiral Dirac wavelet in topological photonic crystal

Abstract:Abstract Light propagates in various ways depending on environment, including uniform medium, surface/interface and photonic crystals, which appears ubiquitously in daily life and has been exploited for advanced optics technology. We unveiled that a topological photonic crystal exhibits unique electromagnetic (EM) transport properties originating from the Dirac frequency dispersion and multicomponent spinor eigenmodes. Measuring precisely local Poynting vectors in microstrips of honeycomb structure where optics topology emerges upon a band gap opening in the Dirac dispersion and a p-d band inversion induced by a Kekulé-type distortion respecting C 6v symmetry, we showed that a chiral wavelet induces a global EM transportation circulating in the direction counter to the source, which is intimately related to the topological band gap specified by a negative Dirac mass. This brand-new Huygens-Fresnel phenomenon can be considered as the counterpart of negative refraction of EM plane waves associated with upwardly convex dispersions of photonic crystals, and our present finding is expected to open a new window for photonic innovations.

Abstract:The photonic quantum spin Hall effect in time reversal invariant photonic system shows two pseudospin-up and-down photonic states preserved pseudo-time-reversal symmetry in C 6 v symmetry, and forms a typical of unidirectional helical edge modes within a topological bulk photonic bands gap. Here we demonstrate topological unidirectional helical edge states with robustness and pseudospin-locking in all-dielectric topological photonic crystals with honeycomb lattice. Based on intrinsic and local chirality of the topological helical edge modes, we calculate the directionality D to characterize directionality of topological unidirectional helical edge modes. The unidirectional excitation of topological helical edge states is position-dependent of chiral source, which is checked out by the full-wave simulations. A specific multifunctional waveguide with tunable cross-channel, V-splitting and four-channel in a waveguide structure with cross-like route is achieved by changing the location of chiral source based on chirality map. A reprogrammable system to recode information (pseudospin-polarized and location) of chiral source is presented by us, and realize multi-switching for integrated photonic via circuits external circuits control in computer. Our work has great potential for applications in on-chip optical circuits with recoding and modularized information processing using pseudospin-dependent one-way transport.

Topologically Enhanced Circular Dichroism from Metasurfaces

Abstract:Circular dichroism (CD) is one of the most distinctive properties of chiral materials. In recent decades, chiral metasurfaces have been regarded as a promising framework to realize chiral optical devices with ultrathin thickness and compact footprints. Various efforts have been devoted to increase the CD response from such metasurfaces. Here we present a method to enhance the CD effect from metasurfaces utilizing a topological concept. Two multilayered photonic crystals with different topological invariants are adopted and put in contact leading to the appearance of a topological edge state and a distinct electromagnetic field concentration at the interface. By embedding L-shaped chiral metasurfaces into the interface, the CD response is observed to be obviously boosted. We find that due to the robustness feature of the topological edge state, the spectral position of the CD peak is fixed at the edge-state wavelength and is immune to structural variation of the metasurface array. Considering that the multilayered films are easy to fabricate, such a topological concept could act as a simple and feasible strategy for enhancing chiral optical response from nanoscales, and could find wide applications in realizing ultracompact polarization-selective optical components.
