Abstract:The mechanical behavior of fiber-cement composites is significantly influenced by the interfacial bonding between the fiber and the cement matrix. However, natural fibers are less chemically compatible with the cement matrix. As a result, it is essential to modify the surface of natural fibers to achieve good fiber-matrix interfacial bonds. In the current study, sisal fibers intended for use as a reinforcement in concrete matrices were alkali treated with NaOH solutions (2%, 5%, and 10%) for 12 hrs, 24 hrs, and 48 hrs. Water absorption, tensile strength, and surface morphological changes in fibers were studied. The effect of fiber treatment on the concrete was also assessed by measuring its slump, compressive strength, flexural strength, and toughness. Alkali treatment was discovered to reduce the water absorption capacity of sisal fiber. On the contrary, fiber surface morphology and mechanical properties improved up to a point and then gradually declined. The addition of treated sisal fiber considerably increases concrete's flexural strength and toughness. However, an insignificant change in compressive strength was observed.

Abstract:The incorporation of sisal fiber into the concrete matrix reduces waste disposal, which has negative environmental impacts. The aim of this study was to perform an experimental investigation on shear strength and microstructure of chemically treated sisal fiber-reinforced concrete (SFRC). In order to accomplish the aim of the study, physical, shear, and mechanical properties of concrete reinforced with chemically treated sisal fiber have been performed. 0.50%, 1.00%, 1.25%, 1.50%, 1.75%, and 2.00% of sodium hydroxide (NaOH) and sulfuric acid (H2SO4) treated sisal fiber were used as an addition to the dry weight average with the help of the American Concrete Institute (ACI) mix design procedure. After the 7th and 28th days of curing, shear strength according to the ASTM D5379M standard and the mechanical properties of concrete have been conducted. For microstructural properties, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) were conducted after the concrete was cured for 28 days. Forty-six percent and 20% compressive strength enhancement at the 7th and 28th days of curing was compared to the control mix. Twenty-seven percent enhancement was recorded in the split tensile strength of 1.5% SFRC as compared to the control mix at 28 curing days. A shear strength of 1.5% SFRC was improved by 95% at the 7th curing days and 28% at the 28th curing days as compared to the control mix. As compared to conventional concrete, SFRC shows a denser microstructure. In addition to this, portlandite, quartz, calcium aluminum silicate, and C─S─H crystal are the available phases in the concrete matrix.

Abstract:Cracks developed due to drying and shrinkage in plain cement concrete can be overcome by introducing discreet and randomly oriented fibrous material as a reinforcing agent. Researchers focused only on synthetic fiber-reinforced concrete (FRC) most of the time while neglecting natural FRC. Previously, researchers focused on double hybrid FRC, whereas triple hybrid FRC required a further behavioral study on FRC's mechanical characteristics. The primary objective of this study is to enhance mechanical properties of matrix due to the effect of short fiber in randomly oriented without changing their individual identity. Here, sisal fiber (SF), banana fiber (BF), and human hair fiber (HH) are used as reinforcing agents with varying volume fractions ( vf) from 0.5% to 2% and a hybrid of 1% vf with concrete matrix. This investigation found that BF 0.5% vf , SF 1.5% vf , HH 1% vf , and H6 (SF0.25BF0.5HH0.25) % vf showed the optimum volume fraction, which improved mechanical properties and resisted sulfate and alkaline attack on the concrete matrix. Product from individual and combined natural FRC could be a sustainable building material that is economical, eco-friendly, and durable. GRAPHICAL

Abstract:This paper presents a focused comparative case study considering the influence of natural and synthetic fibers on the fresh and mechanical properties of concrete. Locally sourced 19 mm long sisal fibers from sisalana leaves and manufactured polypropylene fibers were incorporated in a normal strength concrete matrix with fiber volumetric contents of 1%. After describing the measured aggregate characteristics, mix designs, and fresh concrete properties, several destructive and non-destructive tests on hardened concrete were undertaken. The former included compression tests on cylinders and flexural tests on prismatic samples, and the latter included ultrasonic pulse velocity and rebound number tests. The workability of sisal-fiber reinforced concrete was generally lower than the nominal concrete and that provided with polypropylene fibers by about 20%, largely due to the hydrophilic nature of the natural fibers. Test results showed that the presence of sisal fibers can improve the compressive strength by about 6%, and the tensile strength by about 4%, compared with the non-reinforced counterpart. This was due to the sisal fibers storing moisture that was released gradually during hydration, helping with the strength development. The concrete with polypropylene had virtually identical properties to the reference concrete. In addition to fresh and mechanical properties, environmental impacts associated with the production of fiber and concrete were also identified and discussed. Based on the assessments from this paper, overall, from the two fibers investigated, the sisal fiber showed more promising results, indicating that natural fibers can be a more sustainable alternative to plastic fibers, providing a good balance between workability and strengths.

Abstract:Background: Concrete made using sugarcane bagasse ash as a cement replacement is associated with a reduction in split tensile strength and therefore a need to establish the possible causes of tensile strength reduction and explore ways of mitigating that reduction. Objective: The aim of this study is to establish the possible causes of tensile strength reduction in sugarcane bagasse ash concrete and determine the effect of sisal fiber addition on its mechanical properties. Methods: Scanning Electron Microscopy was first done to analyse concrete microstructure in establishing the possible causes of tensile strength reduction in sugarcane bagasse ash concrete. Thereafter, sisal fiber addition was done by varying aspect ratios and percentages. The effect of the addition was determined on the mechanical properties of bagasse ash concrete accompanied by microstructure studies on extracted fibers and split surfaces of concrete. Results: Concrete microstructure studies revealed that wider cracks due to drying shrinkage and poor bonding properties of sugarcane bagasse ash are the possible causes of tensile strength reduction in bagasse ash concrete. Sisal fiber addition improved the mechanical properties of bagasse ash concrete. Microstructure studies portrayed effective bridging of cracks and good adhesive properties of the fibers. Conclusion: Sisal fibers can be used to improve on the mechanical properties of sugarcane bagasse ash concrete with 100 aspect ratio and 1.5% addition being the optimal combination.

Abstract:This study aims to establish an in-depth understanding of the compressive behaviour of concrete confined with low-cost natural fibre reinforced polymer (NFRP). The coupon test of the Jute, Hemp and Cotton NFRP was conducted to obtain their tensile properties. A series of concrete cylinders confined by cotton, jute, and hemp NFRPs was prepared and tested under uniaxial compression test. The results prove that NFRP is effective and suitable to enhance the confinement effect of concrete, especially Jute-NFRP. In addition, empirical equations were investigated to predict peak compressive strength of the NFRPs-confined concrete.

Abstract:The paper reports experimental research regarding the mechanical characteristics of concrete reinforced with natural cellulosic fibers like jute, sisal, sugarcane, and coconut. Each type of natural fiber, with an average of 30 mm length, was mixed with a concrete matrix in varying proportions of 0.5% to 3% mass. The tensile and compressive strength of the developed concrete samples with cellulosic fiber reinforcement gradually increased with the increasing proportion of natural cellulosic fibers up to 2%. A further increase in fiber loading fraction results in deterioration of the mechanical properties. By using jute and sisal fiber reinforcement, about 11.6% to 20.2% improvement in tensile and compressive strength, respectively, was observed compared to plain concrete, just by adding 2% of fibers in the concrete mix. Bending strength increased for the natural fiber-based concrete with up to 1.5% fiber loading. However, a decrease in bending strength was observed beyond 1.5% loading due to cracks at fiber−concrete interface. The impact performance showed gradual improvement with natural fiber loading of up to 2%. The water absorption capacity of natural cellulosic fiber reinforced concrete decreased substantially; however, it increased with the loading percent of fibers. The natural fiber reinforced concrete can be commercially used for interior or exterior pavements and flooring slabs as a sustainable construction material for the future.

Abstract:This research investigates the effect of various fibers on the strength and flexibility of concrete from an educational perspective. In this research, the use of additives including types of fibers (macrosynthetic fibers, polypropylene, and glass fibers) which make up 1% of the volume of hybrid concrete is taught. The combined addition of these fibers to create the hybrid reinforced concrete with high tensile strength and plasticity is discussed in this education. The tensile strength results obtained from direct and indirect methods have significant differences. In the concrete laboratory, multiple experiments were carried out to determine the best fiber composition using two different types of fibers. The experiments included direct tensile testing using the compressive-to-tensile force conversion (CTFC) method, which is a new approach, and indirect tensile testing using the Brazilian disk method. The loading rate for the tests was 1 kg/sec. The average tensile strength was 3.3 MPa, and the average compressive strength was 35 MPa. The Young's modulus was measured to be 20 GPa. The results showed that macrosynthetic fibers were more effective in increasing the concrete's tensile strength compared to other combinations. The tests performed on the effects of combining glass fibers with macrosynthetic fibers compared to combining macrosynthetic fibers with polypropylene show a more effective tensile strength. In this article, the direct tensile strength of concrete samples is evaluated by introducing an innovative tensile test device with a ring-shaped sample. The results obtained from this new device have been numerically compared with the uniaxial direct tension method proposed by ISRM. The educational measures of this new knowledge regarding concrete additives and performing innovative tensile strength tests and comparing them with each other provide a detailed understanding of concrete strength evaluation.

Abstract:Synthetic fibers are normally used as reinforcing material to strengthen the concrete. Natural fibers have been considered as the most sustainable alternative for synthetic fibers in both cost and sustainability point of view. In this study, mechanical characteristics of pre-treated bamboo and jute fiber-reinforced concrete (FRC) composites have been evaluated. The performance of treated natural fibers in the enhancement of strength of concrete has been examined. Fibers were added in the percentage proportions of 0.5, 1, 1.5, 2, and 2.5 by the weight of cement in the concrete matrix. The compressive and flexural strength of fiber-reinforced concrete has been experimentally verified. The test results show that maximum compressive strength was obtained as 26.4 MPa and 26.1 MPa for concrete with 1.5% bamboo and 2% jute fibers, respectively, at 28 days of curing. Similarly, maximum flexural strength was obtained as 6.36 MPa and 6.1 MPa for concrete with 1.5% bamboo and 2% jute fibers, respectively, at 28 days of curing. Based on the maximum compressive strength and flexural strength, optimum dosage of treated bamboo and jute fiber has been identified as 1.5% and 2%, respectively. SEM analysis reveals that there is a good bonding between fibers and concrete matrix, and breaking of fibers is due to pulling load and debonding.

Abstract:Gaining an understanding of how chemical treatment affects the mechanical properties of natural fiber reinforced polymer composites is essential to enhance their performance and broaden their applicability across various engineering domains. The objective of this study was to develop bio-composites by combining polylactic acid with sisal fibers that have undergone chemical treatments and evaluating the mechanical properties at different temperatures to determine their suitability for high-temperature applications. For this purpose, sisal fibers were chemically treated using alkali, acetylation, and alkali/acetylation solution before composite processing. The results revealed that tensile strength slightly improved by alkali treatment, while both alkali/acetylation and acetylation treatments decreased the tensile strength and tensile modulus. Alkali treatment significantly enhanced flexural strength, while the effect of acetylation and alkali/acetylation treatments on flexural strength was less pronounced. All chemical treatments led to a slight increase in flexural strain at failure, but resulted in a decrease in tensile strain at failure and tensile modulus. Alkali treatment slightly increased flexural modulus, while acetylation and alkali/acetylation treatments significantly reduced it. The impact strength of the bio-composites was increased by alkali and acetylation treatments, but significantly reduced by alkali/acetylation treatment. Furthermore, the flexural strength of all bio-composites decreased as temperature increased, especially in plasticized bio-composites using tributyl 2-acetylcitrate plasticizer. The flexural strain at failure decreased with the addition of tributyl 2-acetylcitrate at room temperature. In plasticized bio-composites, the flexural strain at failure increased at 35°C, but decreased at 45°C. On the other hand, the flexural strain at failure of non-plasticized bio-composites remained constant up to 35°C, slightly increased up to 45°C, and then significantly increased at temperatures above 45°C. These bio-composites could be suitable for packaging industry as biodegradability is the criteria for such applications.

Abstract:The addition of fibers helps to increase the performance of concrete in terms of resistance and flexibility. Different types of fibers that have different mechanical properties may change the behavior of concrete. Fiber-reinforced concrete with varied combinations of fibers (steel, macro synthetic, and polypropylene fibers) in 1% volume is investigated in this research. Concrete samples were fabricated from a combination of two types of fibers with different percentages to measure the compressive strength with the approach of determining the optimal ratio of fibers. The results showed that the hybrid samples containing steel fibers provide higher compressive strength compared to the samples containing macro synthetic and polypropylene fibers. Macro synthetic and polypropylene fibers in concrete samples have played a significant role in increasing the flexibility and efficiency of concrete, as well as significantly reducing cracking and increasing durability and toughness. In these hybrid models, coherence is preserved in the event of failure. The combination of polypropylene fibers with both steel and macro synthetic fibers significantly reduces the compressive strength of concrete samples. In concrete samples with hybrid fibers, samples with a combination of macro synthetic and steel fibers had higher compressive strength than samples with a combination of steel and polypropylene fibers.

Abstract:Numerous studies have been conducted recently on fibre reinforced concrete (FRC), a material that is frequently utilized in the building sector. The utilization of FRC has grown in relevance recently due to its enhanced mechanical qualities over normal concrete. Due to increased environmental degradation in recent years, natural fibres were developed and research is underway with the goal of implementing them in the construction industry. In this work, several natural and artificial fibres, including glass, carbon, steel, jute, coir, and sisal fibres are used to experimentally investigate the mechanical and durability properties of fibre-reinforced concrete. The fibres were added to the M40 concrete mix with a volumetric ratio of 0%, 0.5%, 1.0%, 1.5%, 2.0% and 2.5%. The compressive strength of the conventional concrete and fibre reinforced concrete with the addition of 1.5% steel, 1.5% carbon, 1.0% glass, 2.0% coir, 1.5% jute and 1.5% sisal fibres were 4.2 N/mm2, 45.7 N/mm2, 41.5 N/mm2, 45.7 N/mm2, 46.6 N/mm2, 45.7 N/mm2 and 45.9 N/mm2, respectively. Comparing steel fibre reinforced concrete to regular concrete results in a 13.69% improvement in compressive strength. Similarly, the compressive strengths were increased by 3.24%, 13.69%, 15.92%, 13.68% and 14.18% for carbon, glass, coir, jute, and sisal fibre reinforced concrete respectively when equated with plain concrete. With the optimum fraction of fibre reinforced concrete, mechanical and durability qualities were experimentally investigated. A variety of durability conditions, including the Rapid Chloride Permeability Test, water absorption, porosity, sorptivity, acid attack, alkali attack, and sulphate attack, were used to study the behaviour of fiber reinforced concrete. When compared to conventional concrete, natural fibre reinforced concrete was found to have higher water absorption and sorptivity. The rate of acid and chloride attacks on concrete reinforced with natural fibres was significantly high. The artificial fibre reinforced concrete was found to be more efficient than the natural fibre reinforced concrete. The load bearing capacity, anchorage and the ductility of the concrete improved with the addition of fibres. According to the experimental findings, artificial fibre reinforced concrete can be employed to increase the structure's strength and longevity as well as to postpone the propagation of cracks. A microstructural analysis of concrete was conducted to ascertain its morphological characteristics.

Abstract:<span>This review article focused on the mechanical properties of sisal, coir and hemp fiber-reinforced concrete composites and several factors affecting the mechanical properties of natural fiber-reinforced concrete (NFRC) composites. Several treatments were applied to improve the surface of natural fiber for improving the strength and durability of composites. Recently researchers have investigated the mechanical properties by using NaOH treatments effects of sisal, coir and hemp fibers-reinforced concrete composite are highlighted in this study. A variety of recent studies showed that sodium hydroxide (NaOH) treatment plays a significant role in the adhesion of fiber concrete composites. It was found that NaOH improves the mechanical properties of the natural fiber-reinforced composites. Further, the treatment techniques for the modification of these natural fibers by improving the surface of these natural fibers are discussed. In the same way, previous research has investigated the effect of thermal stability and water absorption on the mechanical properties. Generally, this review article was aimed to highlight, gather, and explore the previous reported research studies leading the mechanical properties of sisal, coir and hemp fiber and its polymer composites to deliver a basis source of data and literature to expose it as composite materials like synthetic fibers.</span>

Abstract:Some natural fibers such as jute which have high tensile strength can be applied in natural fiber-reinforced polymer (FRP). Natural cellulose fibers are hydrophilic, resulting in lower reinforcement performance. Heat treatment can reduce water content in natural fibers and possibly improve the properties of natural FRP in terms of enhancing fiber and polymer composite action. This paper presents an improvement of jute fiber-reinforced polymer (JFRP) composites by heat treatment. The heat treatment conditions (i.e., temperature and duration) were considered. Coupons of heated JFRPs were tested to investigate their tensile properties. The application of JFRP on confinement was investigated by compression tests on concrete cylinders with JFRP wrapping. The experimental results indicated that a suitable heat treatment condition of 80 degrees C for 24 h can significantly increase the tensile strength of JFRP coupons and the compressive strength of JFRP-confined concrete. The testing results of concrete confinement can be used to validate the existing predicting equations for confined compressive strength. In addition, a new equation was proposed for the effect of heat treatment of JFRP.

Abstract:Background: Conventional reinforced concrete mixes are used for building projects worldwide because they are strong and last longer. Due to its versatility with different admixtures and compositions, the conventional concrete mix has always been a research area. Researchers are investigating the compatibility of conventional concrete with natural fibers to inexpensively attain maximum strength in concrete, as conventional concrete adds strength by adding fibers. Methods: In this research, the durability test, acid and alkaline attack test, and wetting and drying test are performed to evaluate the concrete mix. Results and Conclusion: The mix design for M25, M35, and M50 grade concrete with and without sisal fiber is completed in this work. Overall, findings from several analyses suggest that sisal fiber concrete outperforms conventional concrete in terms of strength and durability. According to the study, sisal fiber concrete can be used instead of conventional concrete to achieve superior outcomes and sustainability. method: In this research novel, composite material sisal fibre is with traditional concrete, and its strength is determined for different parameters required for any civil construction work.

Abstract:This paper presents an experimental study on the influence of alkaline environments on natural fibers of plant and mineral origin in concretes. The durability of concrete-based composite materials is influenced by the properties of the reinforcing fiber, and the serviceability of concrete is dependent on its durability. The aim of the present study is to investigate the strength, weight loss %, and surface degradation of jute, sugarcane, coconut, sisal, as well as basalt fibers through an accelerated aging method when used as reinforcements in concrete. The samples were immersed in an alkaline environment of sodium and calcium hydroxide at two different levels of pH for one week. Further, the fibers were immersed in NaOH and Ca(OH)2 solutions of 1 M, 2 M, 4 M, and 6 M concentrations for 48 h in order to investigate the gradual effect of an alkaline environment on the mechanical properties of the fiber. It was concluded that the weight loss % was greatest for jute fibers when used in concrete composite, while there was no significant effect on the basalt fiber samples. The strength of jute fiber in the concrete sample was also most severely affected by the aging process, compared to other fibers. The strength of basalt fibers in a concrete composite was least affected by the aging process. In some cases, the sisal fiber sample showed an increase in fiber tenacity after the aging process due to fibrillation, which might have increased the interfacial area. The fiber microstructure before and after the aging was evaluated through the use of scanning electron microscopy (SEM). SEM analyses of different fibers were carried out to investigate surface degradation. The fiber pull-out strength was found to be the greatest for basalt fiber, followed by jute and sisal. This is indicative of the excellent adhesion of such fibers with cement in a concrete composite. In these cases, the use of sisal fiber results in defibrillation and increased specific surface area. Sugarcane and coconut fibers ruptured due to their inherent weakness and provided only a small increment in the mechanical performance of the concrete. Basalt fiber-reinforced concrete offered the greatest compressive strength, followed by jute and sisal. These observations provide crucial information regarding the durability and aging of natural fiber-reinforced concrete.

Abstract:In light of environmental concerns such as global warming, there has been a dramatic rise in natural fiber concrete (NFC) research and development. The advantages of these materials over others, such as low environmental impact and minimal cost, warrant interest and support their potential across various applications. This study investigates mechanical properties and micro-structural analysis for M70 grade of high-strength concrete (HSC) under the effect of natural fiber with alccofine. Cement was partially replaced in this investigation by 15 % alccofine content. In this experiment, natural banana fiber (BF) and coir fiber (CF) were selected and added in concrete at 0.5 %, 1 %, 1.5 %, and 2 % by volume. Nine concrete mix compounds were developed and investigated the mechanical characteristics, including uniaxial compressive strength, splitting tensile strength, flexural strength, impact strength, and bond strength of concrete, and microstructural analysis, including scanning electron microscope (SEM), energy dispersive Xray spectroscopy (EDS), Fourier transform infrared (FTIR), and X-ray diffraction (XRD), were examined. The outcome of the results revealed that the inclusion of BF and CF with alccofine improves the mechanical characteristics of concrete compared to the control mix. Compared with reference HSC, 1 % banana fiber increased the mechanical performance after 28 days of curing. BF significantly enhanced the mechanical properties of high-strength concrete compared to CF. Furthermore, banana fiber provides early warning of failure due to its elasticity.

Abstract:The use of synthetic fiber and natural fiber for concrete production has been continuously investigated. Most of the materials have become popular for their higher flexibility, durability, and strength. However, the current study explores the engineering properties of cement concrete reinforced with nylon and jute fibers together. Varying proportions and lengths of nylon and jute fibers were utilized in the concrete mixture. Hence, the combined effects of nylon and jute fibers on workability, density, water absorption, compressive, tensile, flexural strength, and drying shrinkage of concrete were investigated. Results showed that concrete with 1% of nylon and jute fibers together by the volume fraction showed a maximum enhancement of the compressive strength, split tensile strength, and flexural strength by 11.71%, 14.10%, and 11.04%, respectively, compared to the control mix of concrete at 90 days. However, the water absorption of concrete increased with increasing nylon and jute fiber contents. The drying shrinkage of concrete decreased with the addition of nylon and jute fibers together after 90 days. Thus, the sparing application of both nylon and jute fiber as discussed in this study can be adopted for concrete production.

Abstract:The main purpose of this paper is to investigate the impact of the thermal processing of natural fibers on the strength of what is considered fiber-reinforced concrete. Natural fibers extracted from palm trees and bamboo residues were collected and pyrolyzed. The investigation of the morphological alterations that occur during the pyrolysis of natural fibers at a temperature of 200°C showed the impact of the cementitious environment on this process. In addition, the mechanical characteristics of fiber-reinforced concrete were conducted on different dosages (1, 1.5, 2, and 5% wt.) of treated and untreated palm oil, date kernel, and bamboo fibers. The results demonstrated that the inclusion of fibers up to 1.5% wt. enhanced the concrete mixes mechanical properties, which included pyrolyzed fibers. Analyzes of the concrete microstructure revealed that the treated fibers were not damaged. The 1.5% wt. addition of fibers after pyrolysis process can effectively improve their adhesion to the matrix and reduce the width and number of cracks. Abstract:Researchers are increasingly becoming fascinated by the possibilities of utilizing natural fibre, which is a byproduct of production processes, as an addition in concrete. This fibre exhibits a low density and is amenable to chemical changes. The primary aim of this research study is to examine the influence of agave cantula roxb. fibre (ACRF) in low-density foamed concrete (FC) after being subjected to different doses of alkali treatment using sodium hydroxide (NaOH). Various weight fractions of treated ACRF were employed in the FC mix, namely 0% (as the control), 1%, 2%, 3%, 4%, and 5%. FC with a density of 1060 kg/m3 was produced and subsequently tested. The three types of strength properties that have been evaluated and analysed included flexural, tensile, and compressive strengths. The findings from this study have revealed that the inclusion of 3% of treated ACRF in FC yields highly favourable results in relation to strength properties. The use of treated ACRF improves the FC’s strength characteristics, particularly its bending and tensile strength, by bridging microscopic cracks and filling up gaps. It is noteworthy to emphasize that accumulation and unequal dispersion of ACRF are possible if the weight fraction of ACRF applied above the optimal value of 3% which led to decrease in FC’s strength properties. This exploratory work will lead to a better understanding of the potential applications of treated ACRF in FC. It is critical to encourage the long-term development and implementation of FC products and technology.
