Abstract:ABSTRACTIn this article, we report a novel physical and chemical composite foaming system, which was used to successfully prepare high‐performance and low‐cost composite superabsorbent [poly(sodium acrylic acid) (PAA–Na)] hydrogels based on acrylic acid by free‐radical polymerization in a water bath under a nitrogen atmosphere without the use of any organic solvents. The prepared hydrogels showed superabsorbent properties, high water‐absorption abilities and swelling rates, a lighter packing density, and a multiporous microstructure. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and scanning electron microscopy revealed that the sodium dodecyl sulfate surfactant, sodium bicarbonate chemical foaming agent, and 1,1,2‐trifluorotrichloroethane physical foaming agent were evenly distributed and grafted onto the PAA–Na matrix. Water‐absorption, swelling rate, and packing density testing confirmed that the superabsorbent had a high water‐absorption ability and swelling rate and a lighter packing density. Furthermore, we investigated the effects of different foaming agents, including chemical and physical foaming agents, on the swelling and water‐retention capabilities of the superabsorbent hydrogels (SAHs).The results show that the combination of these foaming agents significantly improved the water‐absorbing capacity. With the help of these foaming agents, we obtained PAA–Na hydrogels without any organic solvents for posttreatment or special porogens; this is an environmentally beneficial way to prepare SAHs for hygiene and biomedical products. © 2016 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Swelling and Characterization Behavior of Anti-salt Superabsorbent based on Carboxymethyl Cellulose-g-PAA-co-BuMC Hydrogel

Abstract:A novel superabsorbent hydrogel was synthesized via crosslinking graft copolymerization of acrylacid (AA) abd buthylmethacrylate (BuMC) onto Carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) backbones in a homogeneous solution. The methylenebisacrylamide (MBA) and Ceric amounium sulfate (CAN) were used as water-soluble crosslinker and initiator, respectively. Evidence of grafting was obtained by comparing FTIR,SEM spectra of CMC and the graft copolymer as well as solubility characteristics of the products. A mechanism for the superabsorbent hydrogel formation was also suggested. The affecting parameters onto swelling capacity of the synthesized hydrogel, i.e., concentration of AA/BuMC waight ratio, MBA as well as reaction temperature were systematically optimized for obtaining maximum absorbency as possible as. The swelling capacity of hydrogels was also measured in various salt solutions (LiCl, NaCl, KCl, MgCl2, CaCl2, SrCl2, BaCl2, and AlCl3). Due to high swelling ability in salt solutions, the hydrogel may be referred as “anti-salt superabsorbent” polymers. The overall activation energy for the graft copolymerization reaction was found to be 374 kJ/mol. The swelling kinetics of the hydrogels in distilled water was preliminary investigated.

Abstract:New superabsorbent nanocomposite was synthesized by free-radical graft polymerization of sulfonated-carboxymethyl cellulose (SCMC) with acrylic acid (AA) in the presence of polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) and silica nanoparticles. Carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) was first sulfonated using chlorosulfonic acid, and then AA monomers were grafted onto SCMC. FTIR results confirmed that sulfonation of CMC as well as grafting of AA monomers onto SCMC has been performed successfully. Moreover, the presence of silica nanoparticles into superabsorbent nanocomposite was evaluated with EDX analysis. The element mappings show a homogenous distribution of silica nanoparticles throughout the hydrogel nanocomposite. SEM images exhibited porous morphology for hydrogel nanocomposite, which was due to the incorporation of PVP in its network. The experimental findings from TGA analysis indicated that incorporation of PVP and silica nanoparticles into the hydrogel network improved thermal stability of superabsorbent nanocomposite. Swelling kinetic studies revealed that superabsorbent nanocomposite hydrogel had higher equilibrium swelling capacity and swelling rate compared with the neat hydrogel sample. Besides that, superabsorbent nanocomposite depicted excellent salt and pH-sensitive behavior in different saline and pH solutions. As a consequence, this hydrogel nanocomposite acts as useful water reservoir, which might be most profitable in agricultural applications.

Abstract:Firstly, hydrotalcite (HT) was synthesized by the urea method. Then, sodium methyl allyl sulfonate (SMAS) was used as intercalation agent to prepare intercalated HT (SMAS-HT). Finally, a novel poly(acrylic-co-acrylamide)/HT nanocomposite superabsorbent was prepared by inverse suspension polymerization, using N,N'-methylenebisacrylamide (NMBA) as a cross-linking agent and potassium persulfate (KPS) as an initiator. The morphology of the superabsorbents was characterized by FT-IR, XRD, SEM and TEM. The influences of the amount of SMAS-HT on the water (salt) absorbency were investigated. Results showed that the intercalation was successful and the intercalated SMAS-HT incorporated into the superabsorbent was completely exfoliated. The superabsorbent particles approach a spherical shape and the average size is 200-300 nm. The particle sizes of the superabsorbents decrease with increasing the content of SMAS-HT. In addition, the superabsorbent acquired its highest water (salt) absorbency when the content of SMAS-HT is 3 wt%. The highest absorbencies of the superabsorbent for deionized water and 0.9% NaCl(aq) were 900 g/g and 140 g/g, respectively.

Abstract:In this study, cellulose-based superabsorbent hydrogel was synthesized from sodium carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC-Na), acrylic acid (AA), and 2-acrylamido-2-methylpropanesulfonic acid (AMPS) to enhance its water absorbency and salt tolerance for soil-conditioning applications in areas suffering from drought and soil salinization. Superabsorbent hydrogels (SHs) were prepared by CMC-Na and AMPS successfully, using chemical graft technology. Structure, morphology, thermal stability, and water absorbency of SHs were deduced. The cellulose-based hydrogel showed a high salt tolerance that the maximum water absorbency reached 604 and 119% in distilled water and saline water, respectively. The swelling behavior in aqueous solvents indicated that the water absorption of hydrogels was improved with the increasing ratio of CMC-Na. All SHs exhibited adsorption of nitrogen with the maximum adsorption of ammonia nitrogen 30 mg·g−1 and the presence of hydrogels could slow down the loss of nutrients in the soil. This study provided a feasible strategy that AMPS was substituted by CMC-Na to synthesize SHs with strong water absorbency and high salt tolerance which could be efficiently applied in agriculture as a soil conditioner.

Abstract:In arid areas, the rapid evaporation of water leads to severe water shortage for plant growth. Superabsorbent polymers have the prospect of preventing water evaporation because of its excellent water absorbency. However, insufficient in salt resistance, water retention, and swelling rate limit its application. Herein, we fabricated Hydroxyethyl cellulose-g-(Acrylic acid-co-2-Acrylamido-2-methyl-1-propane sulfonic acid)/laterite (HEC-g-P (AA-co-AMPS)/laterite) with exceptional abovementioned performances by aqueous solution polymerization. Under optimal synthesis conditions, the water absorbency of the superabsorbent polymer were 1294 g/g, 177 g/g, and 119 g/g in distilled water, tap water, and 0.9 wt% NaCl solution, respectively. The water retention of the superabsorbent polymer was still as high as 97.7% after 16 h at 25 °C, the water absorbency was up to 832 g/g after re-swelling for 5 times at 40 °C, and the water absorption reached swelling equilibrium was only 5 min. We investigated the effect of the mount of swollen hydrogel on the water evaporation rate in soil, and the results showed that hydrogels were effective in inhibiting soil water evaporation. Our study provides a new horizon for the application of superabsorbent polymer.

Abstract:The hydrogel regeneration process, involving various cellulose types, results in distinct chemical bonding patterns. Even minor variations in chemical interactions among polymers during regeneration significantly impact properties like hydrogel-forming ability, hydrophilicity, and swelling capacity. This study focuses on regenerating a superabsorbent hydrogel from the interplay of native empty fruit bunch cellulose (EFBC), sodium carboxymethyl cellulose (NaCMC), and hydroxyethyl cellulose (HEC) using epichlorohydrin (ECH) as a crosslinker. The hydrogel was formed from dissolved EFBC solutions in an aqueous NaOH/urea solvent, supplemented with different NaCMC and HEC weight ratios, and ECH chemically assisted the crosslinking process. EFBC provides the hydrogel's supporting skeletal structure, while NaCMC and HEC play vital roles in enhancing forming ability and its physical and mechanical properties through diverse chemical interactions based on their electrovalent properties. Notably, NaCMC imparts hydrophilicity, while HEC indirectly improves superabsorbent properties through the enhancement of the elastic network's retraction force. Hydrogels combining NaCMC and HEC show a remarkable water absorption capacity exceeding 30,000 %, surpassing those regenerated solely with EFBC and NaCMC. The highest swelling, over 130,000 %, is achieved with 0.75 % NaCMC and 0.25 % HEC. Regarding thermal stability, hydrogels with a higher NaCMC proportion outperform those with increased HEC content. The study highlights the critical role of tailored chemical interactions in successfully regenerating an improved superabsorbent hydrogel with enhanced water absorption properties.

Abstract:The sodium alginate-g-poly(acrylic acid-co-acrylamide)/rice husk ash (NaAlg-g-P(AA-co-AAm)/RHA) superabsorbent nanocomposite was synthesized by the free-radical graft copolymerization of alginate (NaAlg), acrylic acid (AA), acrylamide (AAm), and RHA in aqueous solution. FTIR spectra revealed that the monomers were grafted onto NaAlg chains, and the nanocomposite was formed successfully. Incorporation of RHA into hydrogel matrix formed porous interlinked channels within hydrogel network. Superabsorbent nanocomposite showed greater equilibrium swelling capacity (1070g/g) compared with neat hydrogel (830g/g). Moreover, water transport mechanism of all hydrogels was non-Fickian diffusion type. Rheological measurements confirmed effective role of RHA in improving gel strength of superabsorbent nanocomposite. The influence of various factors, such as different loads (0.3, 0.6, 0.9 psi), solution pH, saline solution, and temperature on the swelling behavior of hydrogels was also assessed. Superabsorbent nanocomposite exhibited good pH-dependent swelling reversibility and high water retention capability, making it more efficient water-saving material for agricultural and horticultural applications.

Abstract:Superabsorbents based on Poly(acrylate sodium)(PNaAA) were synthesized by inverse suspension polymerization with the addition of crosslinking agent. We focused more on the properties of the hydrogel strength, which were characterized by the extrusion deformation. The effects of the crosslinking agent concentration, the neutralization degree of monomer and the composition of the copolymerized monomer on the hydrogel strength were investigated. The results showed that the crosslinking density was one of the most sensitive factors that affected the hydrogel strength and the saturated water absorption had inhibitory action. In addition, the rheological properties of the hydrogel were also investigated and proved to be pseudo-rheological behaviour.

Abstract:A poly-matrix composite-poly(sodium acrylate) (PSA)/hydrotalcite (HT) (PSA/HT) nanocomposite superabsorbent-with obvious improvements in both the water absorbency and salt absorbency has been prepared by the intercalated HT, using sodium methyl allyl sulfonate as an intercalation agent. The superabsorbents acquired their highest water (salt) absorbency when the content of HT is 3 wt%. The highest absorbency for deionized water and 0.9 wt% NaCl ((aq)) were 1100 g/g and 145 g/g, respectively. Microstructures were analyzed by X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscope. Chemical analysis was determined measurements. Results showed that HT incorporated into the superabsorbents was by Fourier infrared spectroscopy and energy dispersion spectroscopy. Abstract:SBA‐15 is successfully incorporated into a composite superabsorbent hydrogel polymer (SAHP) by in situ graft polymerization of acrylic acid (AA) on a carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) backbone using SBA‐15 as a filler. The structure and properties of the SAHPs are studied in detail by means of a variety of characterization methods, including Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, X‐ray diffraction, and field emission scanning electron microscopy. And the effects of the originating mate‐rials (such as SBA‐15, initiator, cross‐linker, ratio of CMC to AA, and neutralization of AA) and pH on the water absorption properties are discussed. The obtained results show that the introduction of SBA‐15 have significant effect on the intrinsic structure of the superabsorbent. Importantly, the composite SAHP exhibit higher thermal stability and significant swelling as well as water retention capacity. The prepared SAHP show good sensitivity to various surfactant solutions, which not only have water retention applications in agriculture but also show potential applications in the field of biomaterials.

Abstract:Synthesis, characterization and application of a superabsorbent hydrogel from A. heterophyllus Lam seed polysaccharides. Sustainability in agriculture can only be achieved by protecting important resources, one of them being water. Availability of water in the soil greatly influences agricultural productivity. Hydrogels play a key role in ensuring water availability and achieving agricultural sustainability. A novel superabsorbent hydrogel was synthesized from Artocarpus heterophyllus Lam seed polysaccharides. The synthesized hydrogel was characterized using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, X‐ray diffraction, thermogravimetric analysis, and scanning electron microscopy. Swelling capacity of the hydrogel in different solutions, water retention duration, its influence on the soil water holding capacity (SWHC), and degradation in soil were assessed. The hydrogel absorbs up to 326 g/g and degrades naturally at around 1.4 wt% daily. The hydrogel improved the SWHC by 34% at a concentration of 0.3% w/w. Further pot experiments with black gram (Vigna mungo (L.) Hepper) plants showed that the superabsorbent hydrogel ensured water availability for 35 days and relieved the plants from drought‐induced stress. The data presented here indicates that the synthesized hydrogel can potentially be used as a soil conditioner for the sustained release of water and fertilizer.

Abstract:Superabsorbent hydrogels based on polyacrylamide (PAAm) and Na-alginate (Alg) or chitosan (CS) were synthesized by γ-rays. The effect of dose and copolymer composition on gel content and water absorbency of PAAm/Alg, PAAm/CS and PAAm/Alg/CS hydrogels were studied. The gel content and water absorbency follows the order PAAm/Alg>PAAm/Alg/CS>PAAm/CS. The effect of different cations, fertilizers, buffers on water absorbency of the hydrogels was investigated. Water retention capability of swollen hydrogels as a function of time was studied. PAAm/Alg hydrogel has a high water retention capability. An application of the prepared hydrogels in agricultural fields was performed using maize plants. The results showed that the presence of hydrogels had growth promotion effect on quality and quantity of maize plants. The plants treated by PAAm/Alg hydrogels showed 50% increase in the grain yield suggesting their possible use as a soil conditioner and a water reservoir for plant-soil system.

Synthesis and characterization of reinforced acrylic-based superabsorbents crosslinked with divinylbenzene

Abstract:A series of superabsorbent polymers were synthesized by an inverse suspension polymerization, with potassium persulfate as the initiator, Span60 as the dispersant, and N,N'-methylene bisacrylamide (BIS) and divinylbenzene (DVB) as multiple crosslinkers. The synthesis conditions, including the amount of dispersant, concentration of crosslinkers, oil-to-water phase ratio (O/W) of the polymerization system, total monomer concentration, and acrylamide (AM) content were studied. The results indicated that there were optima for the following properties: BIS crosslinker concentration (0.075 wt %), O/W (3:1), total monomer concentration (37.5 wt %), and AM content (5 wt %). In addition, the particle size had a significant influence on the absorption speed, and the absorption speed increased with decreasing particle size. In comparison with the conventional sample crosslinked only by BIS, the superabsorbent with the same particle size but crosslinked by multiple crosslinkers had the higher absorption rate because of surface crosslinking. It also showed that the salt resistance and antihydrolyzing property of the superabsorbent crosslinked by multiple crosslinkers (BIS and DVB) were enhanced, which was also attributed to surface crosslinking by DVB. Abstract:A novel kind of salt-resistant superabsorbent composite, polyacrylamide/attapulgite, from acrylamide (AM) and attapulgite (APT) was prepared by free-radical aqueous polymerization, using N,N′-methylenebisacrylamide (MBA) as a crosslinker and ammonium persulfate (APS) as an initiator. The organification of APT with hexadecyltrimethyl ammonium bromide (HDTMABr) was proved by FTIR and XRD. The effects of acidified APT (H+-APT), organo-APT (HDTMABr-APT) and the content of APT in the superabsorbent composite on the water absorbency and the initial swelling rate for the superabsorbent composite in distilled water and in various saline solutions were studied. The effects of incorporated HDTMABr-APT and H+-APT on the reswelling ability of the superabsorbent composites were investigated. The results indicate that the incorporation of APT had remarkable influence on the improvement of water absorbency and swelling rate of the composites. Comparing with the composite doped with H+-APT, the water absorbency for the composite doped with 10wt% HDTMABr-APT was enhanced from 2140gg−1 to 2800gg−1 in distilled water and from 100gg−1 to 121gg−1 in 0.9wt% NaCl solution, respectively. The water absorbency of the composites in various saline solutions decreased with the increasing concentration, especially for the multivalent cations. In addition, the reswelling ability of the superabsorbent composites is also improved evidently by adding a small amount of HDTMABr-APT into the composite, comparing with that of incorporated with H+-APT.

Abstract:A series of acrylic-based superabsorbent resins were synthesized by inverse suspension polymerization, using potassium persulfate as the initiator, N, N'-methylene bisacrylamide (BIS) and divinylbenzene (DVB) as the multiple crosslinking agents. The morphology of the resulting superabsorbent resins revealed by SEM demonstrated that a hard shell layer was indeed formed due to surface crosslinking. The swelling and deswelling properties, and the mechanical strength of superabsorbents were investigated. The results indicated that the adding time of DVB and the amount of DVB participated in the crosslinking show a significant influence on the properties of superabsorbents. When DVB was added in polymerization later, the amount of DVB participated in reaction decreases and the surface crosslinked shell becomes thinner. It is suitable for DVB to be introduced in the later stage of the polymerization process, because the absorption rate of resin is efficiently improved in conjunction with higher water absorption. Furthermore, it was found that the mechanical strength of swollen superabsorbent with surface crosslinking was indeed enhanced in comparison with that of the conventional one.
Fabrication of Grafted Carboxymethyl Cellulose Superabsorbent Hydrogel for Water Retention and Sustained Release of Ethephon in Sandy Soil

Abstract:The present study aimed to develop an efficient superabsorbent hydrogel for water conservation and slow release of Ethephon in sandy soil. Herein, carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) was grafted via a free radical polymerization technique with acrylamide and 2-Acrylamido-2-methylpropanesulfonic acid (AMPS) as hydrophilic monomers. The developed CMC-g-(PAM-co-PAMPS) graft copolymer superabsorbent hydrogel was characterized by FTIR, TGA, and SEM analysis to prove the occurrence of the grafting process. Several factors affecting the grafting process were investigated, while maximum grafting (%) value reached 91%. Moreover, increasing AMPS ratio obviously improved the swelling degree of the developed hydrogel with a maximal value of 17,770%. Moreover, addition of 2% of hydrogel to sandy soil potentially enhanced the water retention by 47% compared to pure sandy soil which retained about 7% of water. Besides, increasing Ethephon ratio up to 20% significantly increased its loading (%) value up to 88%, while about 87% of Ethephon was released within 28 days in a slow and sustained manner. The results suggested that the fabricated grafted hydrogel can serve as nutrient carrier and amendment for sandy soil for advanced agricultural applications.

Synthesis and Application of Biodegradable Cellulose Hydrogels From Sunflower Husks as a Water‐Retaining Material in Agriculture

Abstract:The water shortage is currently a major problem for agriculture around the world, and this, in turn, can negatively impact food safety. Therefore, in this article, acrylamide monomer (AAm) was bound by the cross‐linking agent N, N′‐methylene‐bis‐acrylamide (MBA) in amounts of 10, 15, and 20 mg along with microcrystalline cellulose (MCC) obtained from sunflower seed husk (SFH) and a biodegradable hydrogel in the soil layer with high sorption capacity was synthesized. As a result of the study, the AAm monomer found to be attached to the MCC matrix via intermolecular hydrogen bonds. The kinetics of swelling of the obtained hydrogels in aqueous, electrolytic and water‐ethanol, water‐acetone binary solutions at various amounts of cross‐linking agent were comparatively studied, and it was found that the water sorption potential of the natural polymer—MCC‐based hydrogel (MCC hydrogel)—is high at pH = 6.5 and corresponds to the pH of the soil environment. The study showed that the synthesized hydrogel is optimal when using 10 mg of a cross‐linking agent, has mechanical strength, withstands pressure up to 27 MPa, completely decomposes at 796°C, and has good thermal stability. It has been established that the pore sizes of hydrogel with 10 mg of cross‐linking agent lie within the range of 313.9 nm‐den 3.41 μm and belong to mesoporous materials, where the degree of swelling is 1176%. The MCC hydrogel was saturated with water from the soil within 5 days and collapsed within 35 days, releasing the absorbed water back into the soil, losing 66% of its mass and undergoing biological decomposition. These properties of MCC hydrogel allow it to be used as a "water‐retaining material" in agriculture.
