Abstract:Superabsorbent composites (SACs) have great significance in environmental protection and agricultural production. However, it still remains a huge challenge to prepare SACs with the low-cost, strong water and nutrient retention capacity, slow evaporative loss and low water leakage. Herein, ablmoschus manihot gum-g-poly (acrylic acid-co-2-acrylamide-2- methyl-1-propanesulfonic acid)/microcrystalline cellulose (AMG-g-P(AA-co-AMPS)/MCC) SACs was prepared by radical polymerization method and further applied to prevent deep leakage of water in the soil. In which, the MCC extracted from wheat straw was selected as the skeleton to enhance the porous structure of SACs, and the AMG was used as the main moisture absorption material. Because the uniform distribution and abundant pore structure in AMG-g-P(AA-co-AMPS)/MCC, the water absorption of the SACs under the optimum synthetic conditions reached the equilibrium at 30 min in distilled water, and the optimum water absorption of SACs was 1240 g/g, 248 g/g and 80 g/g in distilled water, tap water and 0.9 wt% NaCl solution, respectively. In addition, SACs has good salt tolerance and pH stability. More importantly, the application of SACs in the soil can help improving the soil water retention and water holding capacity, and can reduce the water permeability in the soil effectively. Therefore, the SACs has broad application potential in agriculture.

Abstract:ABSTRACTIn this article, we report a novel physical and chemical composite foaming system, which was used to successfully prepare high‐performance and low‐cost composite superabsorbent [poly(sodium acrylic acid) (PAA–Na)] hydrogels based on acrylic acid by free‐radical polymerization in a water bath under a nitrogen atmosphere without the use of any organic solvents. The prepared hydrogels showed superabsorbent properties, high water‐absorption abilities and swelling rates, a lighter packing density, and a multiporous microstructure. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and scanning electron microscopy revealed that the sodium dodecyl sulfate surfactant, sodium bicarbonate chemical foaming agent, and 1,1,2‐trifluorotrichloroethane physical foaming agent were evenly distributed and grafted onto the PAA–Na matrix. Water‐absorption, swelling rate, and packing density testing confirmed that the superabsorbent had a high water‐absorption ability and swelling rate and a lighter packing density. Furthermore, we investigated the effects of different foaming agents, including chemical and physical foaming agents, on the swelling and water‐retention capabilities of the superabsorbent hydrogels (SAHs).The results show that the combination of these foaming agents significantly improved the water‐absorbing capacity. With the help of these foaming agents, we obtained PAA–Na hydrogels without any organic solvents for posttreatment or special porogens; this is an environmentally beneficial way to prepare SAHs for hygiene and biomedical products. © 2016 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Abstract:The water absorption of ionic SAP in cement-based materials is small. Therefore, this study synthesized a low-grade kaolin-enhanced SAP through inverse suspension polymerization, and its performances in deionized water, the saturated Ca(OH)2 solution and the supernatant of the cement slurry were investigated. The results indicate that the synthesized SAP revealed a spherical shape with a uniform particle size, showing well dispersion after water saturation. In addition, the use of low-grade kaolin could be beneficial concerning the absorbency of SAP especially using 7.5% low-grade kaolin, as reflected by the consistency results, but its absorbency is sensitive to water temperatures and environmental relative humidity. Besides, compounding inorganic materials into SAP can reduce the cost of SAP synthesis and provide cost efficiency. Finally, the growth of the acrylamide content could deteriorate the absorbency of SAP, but their final equilibrium absorbency could increase, and the absorbency of the synthesized SAP were similar in the media of the saturated Ca(OH)2 solution and the supernatant of cement slurry.

Abstract:Superabsorbent composites (SACs) are widely used for agricultural applications acts as a "miniature soil moisture reservoir" for plants. While these substrates have excellent water retention properties, they often suffer from production costs and a variety of environmental challenges. Herein, polyaspartic acid (PASP), waste paper fibers (WPF) and 2-acrylamido-2-methyl-1-propanesulfonic acid (AMPS) graft copolymerize acrylic acid (AA) to prepare a novel multifunctional PASP-g-P(AA-co-AMPS)/WPF SACs. The synthesis conditions use to prepare the PASP-g-P(AA-co-AMPS)/WPF SACs are optimized, including PASP content, mass ratio of AMPS and AA, initiator content and cross-linker content. In addition, the water retention, salt and acid resistance, reversible swelling and temperature sensitivity of SACs are also investigated and analyzed in detail. Due to the uniform distribution and the rich pore structure, it has a maximum equilibrium adsorption capacity of optimal SACs in distilled water, tap water and NaCl solution (0.9 wt%) are determined to be 731.0 g g −1 , 189.2 g g −1 and 81.4 g g −1 , respectively. Thus, PASP-g-P(AA-co-AMPS)/WPF SACs exhibit excellent environmental tolerance and provide a promising strategy for sustainable agriculture and desertification control.

Abstract:A composite superabsorbent material was synthesized based on silk sericin, acrylic acid and acrylamide by using N,N-methylenebisacrylamide (MBA) as the crosslinker and ammonium persulfate (APS) as the initiator reagent. The water absorbency and water retaining properties of the composite under different preparation conditions were investigated. The absorbency of silk sericin /acrylic acid /acrylamide (SS/AA/AM) superabsorbent polymer polymer in deionized water, tap water and 0.9% NaCl solution were 285 similar to 337 g/g, 191 similar to 220 g/g, 36 similar to 43g/g, respectively. SS/AA/AM: material has excellent re-absorbent abilities and can be reused. The product showed different water absorbency in aqueous chloride salt solutions with the order of Na+ > Ca2+ > Mg2+ > Al3+. FTIR spectra results indicated that silk sericin was successfully grafted with acrylic acid and acrylamide molecules. The study on the absorbent material based on sericin is useful for further research on biodegradable superabsorbent polymer.

Abstract:SBA‐15 is successfully incorporated into a composite superabsorbent hydrogel polymer (SAHP) by in situ graft polymerization of acrylic acid (AA) on a carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) backbone using SBA‐15 as a filler. The structure and properties of the SAHPs are studied in detail by means of a variety of characterization methods, including Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, X‐ray diffraction, and field emission scanning electron microscopy. And the effects of the originating mate‐rials (such as SBA‐15, initiator, cross‐linker, ratio of CMC to AA, and neutralization of AA) and pH on the water absorption properties are discussed. The obtained results show that the introduction of SBA‐15 have significant effect on the intrinsic structure of the superabsorbent. Importantly, the composite SAHP exhibit higher thermal stability and significant swelling as well as water retention capacity. The prepared SAHP show good sensitivity to various surfactant solutions, which not only have water retention applications in agriculture but also show potential applications in the field of biomaterials.

Abstract:The hydrotalcite (HT) synthesized with urea method was used to prepare intercalated HT (SMAS-HT) by using methyl allyl sulfonate (SMAS) as an intercalation agent.A novel poly (acrylic acid-co-acrylamide)/HT nanocomposite superabsorbent was prepared by inverse polymerization, using N,N′-methylenebisacrylamide (NMBA) as a crosslinking agent and potassium persulfate (KPS) as an initiator.The structure and morphology were characterized by FTIR, XRD and SEM.The influences of the amount of SMAS-HT on the water (salt) absorbency were studied.The results showed that the intercalation was successful and SMAS-HT was completely exfoliated after polymerization.Adding a small amount of SMAS-HT could effectively improve the water (salt) absorbency of nanocomposite superabsorbents.The nanocomposite superabsorbents had their highest water (salt) absorbency when the content of SMAS-HT was 3.0%(mass).

Abstract:An eco-friendly superabsorbent composites of xanthan gum-g-polyacrylic acid/semi-coke (XG-g-PAA/SC) were fabricated via grafting of polyacrylic acid onto the XG in the presence of SC. The obtained products were characterized in combination with Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The result indicated that the SC interacted with the polymeric network by hydrogen bond or electrostatic interaction. The swelling ratio of the best sample XG-g-PAA/SC (15 wt%) in distilled water and 0.9 wt% NaCl solution was 410.8 and 61.5 g/g by optimizing the polymerization conditions. In addition, compared with the blank sample (only containing soil), it can be found that adding a certain amount of XG-g-PAA/SC can significantly improve the soil water retention efficiency, which can be further proved by the results of plant pot experiment. Based on the above excellent swelling capacity, water holding capacity and plant growth promoting performance, it can be inferred that the XG-g-PAA/SC is expected to become a water retaining agent or soil regulator for plant growth.

Abstract:An eco-friendly superabsorbent polymer (SAP) was prepared by grafting 2-acrylamido-2-methyl-1-propanesul-fonic acid onto microcrystalline cellulose in lithium chloride/N, N-dimethylacetamide system. The synthesized SAP (cellulose -g-PAMPS) was characterized by FTIR, TGA, SEM, H-1 NMR, C-13 NMR and XRD. The water ab-sorption equilibrium of cellulose -g-PAMPS could be achieved within 10 min in distilled water. Moreover, the maximum water absorption capacities of cellulose -g-PAMPS in distilled water, 0.9 wt% NaCl solution and 3.2 wt % Na2CO3 solution were 648.9, 298.4 and 207.3 g.g(-1), respectively. The water absorption behavior of cellulose -g-PAMPS was interpreted by the pseudo-second-order model. Furthermore, cellulose -g-PAMPS could be used in some extreme conditions due to its high acid and alkali resistance. The water retention rate of cellulose -g-PAMPS could be maintained above 90 % at 25 degrees C for 6 h. As a consequence, the synthesized SAP can be applied to increase the plant growth and survival time under drought conditions, even under saline alkali conditions.

Abstract:A novel multi-functional superabsorbent polymer (SAP) of carboxymethyl cellulose sodium grafted polyacrylic acid/semi-coke (CMC-g-PAA/SC) was firstly prepared by grafting acrylic acid (AA) onto the carboxymethyl cellulose sodium (CMC) using N,N′-methylene-bis-acrylamide (MBA) as cross-linker, ammonium persulfate (APS) as initiator, and the semi-coke (SC) as inorganic component. The SC is the by-product of coal dry distillation, contains 70% of kaolinite and a certain amount of carbon species and humus, which all have the positive role for the soil and the crop. The FTIR characterization verified that the SAP had been polymerized successfully and the SC incorporated into the polymeric matrix evenly. The SEM revealed that the roughness of the SAP increased significantly with the rise of SC content. The TGA analysis proved that the addition of SC could effectively improve thermal stability. At the same time, the effects of pH sensitive, salt concentration, cation type and reswelling ability on the water absorbency were systematically investigated. The results indicated that the swelling of SAP was insensitive in the wide pH range of in 4–12, and maximum water absorbencies with about 420.8 g/g and 64.8 g/g in distilled water and 0.9 wt% NaCl solution were reached as 10 wt% of SC content introducing. Moreover, the SAP also had the better water retention capacity and reusability whatever the SC content. The effect of salt revealed that cations with higher positive charge gave a more obvious effect for the swelling behavior. In view of the above properties, it can be concluded that CMC-g-PAA/SC may have significant potential for agricultural and horticultural application.

Abstract:Sodium alginate-g-poly(acrylic acid-co-2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate)/montmorillonite superabsorbent composites (SACs) were prepared by graft copolymerization of acrylic acid (AA) and 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate (HEMA) onto sodium alginate (Na-Alg) in the presence of montmorillonite (MMT) using N,N′-methylenebisacrylamide (MBA) as a crosslinker and potassium persulfate (KPS) as an initiator in aqueous solution. The composite structures were characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), Thermal Gravimetric Analysis (TGA) and Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM). The effect of % initiator, crosslinker amount and clay ratio on the swelling capacity was investigated. The results indicated that the highest swelling capacity of the composites in distilled water was 752 g/g by using 1.25% KPS and 0.06% MBA, 75% AA, 6.25% HEMA and 12.5% Na-Alg. Different samples were loaded with urea to evaluate their release potentials, and the release was studied by measuring the conductivity. The amount of urea release increased with increasing MMT amount.

Abstract:A poly-matrix composite-poly(sodium acrylate) (PSA)/hydrotalcite (HT) (PSA/HT) nanocomposite superabsorbent-with obvious improvements in both the water absorbency and salt absorbency has been prepared by the intercalated HT, using sodium methyl allyl sulfonate as an intercalation agent. The superabsorbents acquired their highest water (salt) absorbency when the content of HT is 3 wt%. The highest absorbency for deionized water and 0.9 wt% NaCl ((aq)) were 1100 g/g and 145 g/g, respectively. Microstructures were analyzed by X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscope. Chemical analysis was determined measurements. Results showed that HT incorporated into the superabsorbents was by Fourier infrared spectroscopy and energy dispersion spectroscopy. Abstract:Rapid water absorption is very important for the application of superabsorbent polymers under dry or semi-dry conditions, but there are currently few relevant studies. In this context, a novel porous superabsorbent of chitosan-grafted acrylic copolymer-2-acrylamido-2-methylpropanesulfonic acid/sapindus mukorossi pericarp/calcined oil shale semi-coke (CS-g-P(AA-co-AMPS)/SMP/COSSC) was prepared by a green and convenient foam template method, which was triggered by redox polymerization. The rich pore structure of the porous superabsorbent was conducive to accelerating the water absorption rate. It only took 15 min to reach a swelling capacity of 650 g g-1 in distilled water. Soil experiments show that even with the addition of 0.5 wt% porous superabsorbent, the soil water retention time can be extended to 7 days. Finally, it was applied to the growth of cabbage seeds and it was found that the growth was significantly improved. Based on these excellent properties, we expect to provide a valuable reference for the preparation of fast-absorbing materials through the green water-based foam template method, contributing to sustainable agriculture.

Abstract:In order to achieve the low cost and multifunction of superabsorbent composites, poly(acrylic acid-co-acrylamide)/fulvic acid/oil shale semicoke (PAMFS) were prepared by free radical copolymerization of fulvic acid (FA), oil shale semicoke (OSSC), acrylic acid (AA) and acrylamide (AM). The characterization results revealed that FA and OSSC were involved in the construction of a three-dimensional (3D) polymeric network via hydrogen bonding and covalent bonding. The water absorbency of PAMFS in distilled water and 0.9 wt% NaCl solution were 724 and 98 g/g, respectively. The FA slow release of PAMFS in distilled water and soil was achieved due to the interaction between FA and the functional groups of polymer matrix by hydrogen bonds and covalent bonds. Furthermore, the potted experiment indicated that the addition of PAMFS to soil can significantly promote plant growth compared with the pure soil, regardless of water stress. Therefore, this superabsorbent composite showed an excellent water absorption and salt resistance performance, as well as nice slow release performance. It has a broad application prospect.

Abstract:In this study, cellulose-based superabsorbent hydrogel was synthesized from sodium carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC-Na), acrylic acid (AA), and 2-acrylamido-2-methylpropanesulfonic acid (AMPS) to enhance its water absorbency and salt tolerance for soil-conditioning applications in areas suffering from drought and soil salinization. Superabsorbent hydrogels (SHs) were prepared by CMC-Na and AMPS successfully, using chemical graft technology. Structure, morphology, thermal stability, and water absorbency of SHs were deduced. The cellulose-based hydrogel showed a high salt tolerance that the maximum water absorbency reached 604 and 119% in distilled water and saline water, respectively. The swelling behavior in aqueous solvents indicated that the water absorption of hydrogels was improved with the increasing ratio of CMC-Na. All SHs exhibited adsorption of nitrogen with the maximum adsorption of ammonia nitrogen 30 mg·g−1 and the presence of hydrogels could slow down the loss of nutrients in the soil. This study provided a feasible strategy that AMPS was substituted by CMC-Na to synthesize SHs with strong water absorbency and high salt tolerance which could be efficiently applied in agriculture as a soil conditioner.

Abstract:Superabsorbent integrated multiple functions, including absorbing water, preserving water and controlled releasing for fertilizer, which has attracted extensive attention in modern agriculture. In this study, a novel multifunctional superabsorbent of polyacrylic acid/humic acid/semicoke (PAA/HA/SC) with high water retention and favorable slow release performance was developed by incorporation of humic acid (HA) and oil shale semicoke (SC) via a simple free radical polymerization. The water retention, swelling kinetics, pH-dependent and swelling reversibility were investigated systematically. The water retention results showed that the prepared superabsorbent exhibited outstanding water-retention capacities of 824 g/g and 80 g/g in distilled water and 0.9 wt% NaCl solution respectively, as 15 wt% of HA and 6 wt% of SC were introduced into the three dimensional polymeric network of PAA. The slow release behaviors in distilled water and various salt solutions indicated that the release amount of HA was relatively fast in the initial stage, and then became flat after 16 days. Besides, the soil column leaching experiment revealed that the release amount of the HA reached the maximum value of 222.14 mg/L after 9 days, and potted experiment confirmed the growth-promoting effect for plant of PAA/HA/SC. This work explored the practical application of SC in green and sustainable chemical engineering area, also provided an important reference for application of multifunctional superabsorbent in modern agriculture.

The composite water?retaining agents were characterized by infrared spectrum, thermo gravimetry and scanning electron microscope. [Result]Sodium alginate and sodium bentonite can im?prove the properties of water?retaining agent, while decrease cost of production. That water absorptivity of composite wa?ter?retaining agent having AP of 020% based on AA, MBA of 0025% based on AA, SA of 15% based on AA and SB of 15% based on AA indistilled water and normal saline was 850 g/g and 95 g/g, respectively. [Conclusion]This com?posite water?retaining agent had fast water absorption rate and good water retention capacity.

Abstract:Oil shale semicoke (SC), which generated during the production of shale oil has attracted much attention in agriculture recently, as the composition of organic matter, clay mineral and else. In this study, a novel superabsorbent composite of poly(acrylic acid-co-acrylamide)/semicoke (P(AA-co-AM)/SC) was prepared by polymerization of the acrylic acid (AA) and acrylamide (AM) via a convenient one-step reaction as the presence of SC. The characterization of FTIR, SEM, XPS and TG indicated that the successful polymerization and the SC had participated into the construction of 3D polymeric network in superabsorbent. The performance testing results showed that the superabsorbent composites exhibited the excellent water absorbency, favorable water retention properties, fast swelling rate, and nice water reusability. And a 10% of SC amount could improve the water absorbency to 643.13 g/g and 79.82 g/g in distilled water and 0.9% NaCl solution, respectively. The potted culture experiments revealed that the increased water retaining capacity of soil and obvious growth promoting effect for crop. In a word, the novel superabsorbent composite could be as a potential water-saving product used in the agriculture, and the approach reported in this work also can be as a new pathway for high value using of SC via a sustainable chemical engineering process.

Abstract:To improve the salt resistance of superabsorbent materials and the gel strength of superabsorbent materials after water absorption, a bagasse cellulose-based network structure composite superabsorbent (CAAMC) was prepared via graft copolymerization of acrylamide/acrylic acid (AM/AA) onto bagasse cellulose using silane coupling agent modified nano-CaCO3 (MNC) and N,N′-methylene bisacrylamide (MBA) as a double crosslinker. The acrylamide/acrylic acid was chemically crosslinked with modified nano-CaCO3 by C-N, and a stable double crosslinked (DC) network CAAMC was formed under the joint crosslinking of N,N′-methylene bisacrylamide and modified nano-CaCO3. Modified nano-CaCO3 plays a dual role of crosslinking agent and the filler, and the gel strength of composite superabsorbent is two times higher than that of N,N′-methylene bisacrylamide single crosslinking. The maximum absorbency of CAAMC reached 712 g/g for deionized water and 72 g/g for 0.9 wt% NaCl solution. The adsorption process of CAAMC was simulated by materials studio, and the maximum adsorption energy of amino and carboxyl groups for water molecules is −2.413 kJ/mol and −2.240 kJ/mol, respectively. According to the results of CAAMC soil water retention, a small amount of CAAMC can greatly improve the soil water retention effect.

Abstract:The low water absorbency, poor thermal stability, and high cost of absorbent polymers remain significant challenges that need addressing to broaden their range of applications. To address these drawbacks of superabsorbents, a novel superabsorbent polymer composite (SAPc) SA-g-P(AA-co-AM)/MDE was developed using a simple aqueous polymerization method involving sodium alginate (SA), modified diatomite (MDE), acrylic acid (AA), and acrylamide (AM). The synthesized materials were systematically characterized using various techniques, including FT-IR, SEM, and XRD, to determine their chemical structure, morphology, and crystal structure. The water absorbency capacity (WAC) of SA-g-P(AA-co-AM)/MDE increased with increasing SA dosage, but it gradually declined once it exceeded 5 wt%. The SAPc with the highest water absorbency was obtained when the SA content was 5 wt% in both distilled water and NaCl solution. The absorption data of SA-g-P(AA-co-AM)/MDE fit well with the pseudo-first-order (PFO) kinetic model. The results of water retention capacity (WRC) demonstrated that the water-retaining time of the SAPc increased by 39.0% compared to P(AA-co-AM). Additionally, thermal gravimetric analysis revealed that the introduction of MDE and SA enhanced the SAPc's thermal stability. Therefore, this study demonstrates that the introduction of SA and MDE can lead to SAPc with outstanding WAC, WRC, and thermal stability. These findings suggest that the SAPc prepared in this study could be a promising material for use in agriculture, industry, and sanitary goods.
