Abstract:The high activity and stability of intermetallic PtCo nanocatalysts toward oxygen reduction reaction make them a top candidate as low-Pt cathode catalysts in proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs). However, forming intermetallic structures typically requires high-temperature annealing, posing a challenge for achieving well-size control and highly ordered structures. Here we report the design and synthesis of bimetallic core@shell structured precursors for affording high-performance intermetallic PtCo catalysts. The fabrication of the core@shell precursor involves using a molecular ligand containing both sulfur and oxygen donors to selectively bind with Pt colloidal nanoparticles as the core and chelate Co ions as the shell. During high-temperature annealing, the ligand transforms into carbon coatings around alloy nanoparticles, preventing particle sintering; meanwhile, Co ions in the shell can easily diffuse into the Pt core, which helps to increase the thermodynamic driving force for forming intermetallic structures. These benefits enable us to obtain the catalyst with finely dispersed nanoparticles (similar to 3.5 nm) and a high ordering degree of 72%. With 0.1 mgPt/cm(2) cathode loading, the catalyst delivers superior performance and durability in PEMFCs, showing an initial mass activity of 0.56 A/mgPt, an initial power density of 1.05 W/cm(2) at 0.67 V (H2-air), and a voltage loss of 26 mV at 0.8 A/cm(2) after the accelerated durability test. Abstract:Abstract Supported ordered intermetallic compounds exhibit superior catalytic performance over their disordered alloy counterparts in diverse reactions. But the synthesis of intermetallic compounds catalysts often requires high-temperature annealing that leads to the sintering of metals into larger crystallites. Herein, we report a small molecule-assisted impregnation approach to realize the general synthesis of a family of intermetallic catalysts, consisting of 18 binary platinum intermetallic compounds supported on carbon blacks. The molecular additives containing heteroatoms (that is, O, N, or S) can be coordinated with platinum in impregnation and thermally converted into heteroatom-doped graphene layers in high-temperature annealing, which significantly suppress alloy sintering and insure the formation of small-sized intermetallic catalysts. The prepared optimal PtCo intermetallics as cathodic oxygen-reduction catalysts exhibit a high mass activity of 1.08 A mg Pt –1 at 0.9 V in H 2 -O 2 fuel cells and a rated power density of 1.17 W cm –2 in H 2 -air fuel cells.

Abstract:Carbon-supported PtCo intermetallic nanoparticles are competitive low-platinum cathodic oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) catalysts for proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs), but their synthesis needs high-temperature annealing that cause the catalyst to severely sinter. Here, we contrastively investigate the wet-impregnation and oleylamine-mediated colloid methods for the syntheses of PtCo intermetallic catalysts on various high-surface-area carbon supports with different porous structures. We identify that the efficient utilization of internal surface area of porous carbon supports is crucial for the synthesis of small-sized PtCo intermetallic catalysts, which is highly dependent on the metal deposition method as well as the pore structure of carbon supports. Accordingly, small-sized PtCo intermetallic catalysts with enhanced ORR activity and promoted PEMFCs performance were prepared by the wet-impregnation method on mesoporous carbon supports.

Abstract:The metal precursor confinement strategy enhances the dispersion of metal precursors on the surface of the support and restricts the size growth through electrostatic adsorption characteristics. The synergistic interaction between PtFe alloy nanoparticles and the FeNC support facilitates efficient and stable cathode catalysts for proton exchange membrane fuel cells. While Pt‐based binary alloys hold promising potential as cathode catalysts in proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs) due to their desirable properties compared with monometallic counterparts, their weak interactions with carbon support make them challenging for practical cell implementation. Here, the PtFe alloys are uniformly deposited onto the surface of Fe‐Nx‐enriched nanocubes (FeNC) via surface confinement and internal vapor phase etching. The combined action of PtFe alloy and FeNC support acts as the electronic structure modulator resulting in the optimized intermediate adsorption (revealed by density function theory calculations), thereby boosting intrinsic activity to oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and simultaneously enhancing their interactions. The resultant Pt1Fe1 @ Fe0.5NC‐900 catalyst with a low Pt loading (0.065 mgPt cm−2) exhibits excellent mass activity and stability toward ORR in acidic media. When incorporated into a PEMFC, it delivers a superior peak power density of 1.05 W cm−2 and satisfactory stability performance.

Abstract:Intermetallic ordered PtCo is effective for high oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) activity and stability. However, preparing small-sized, highly ordered PtM alloys is still challenging. Herein, we report a controlled two-stage confinement strategy, in which highly ordered PtCoZn/NC nanoparticles of 5.3 nm size were prepared in a scalable process. The contradiction between the high ordering degree with the small particle size as well as the atomic migration with the space confinement was well resolved. An outstanding PEMFC performance was achieved for L10-PtCoZn/NC with a high mass activity (MA) of 1.21 A/mgPt at 0.9 ViR-free, 80.1 % MA retention after 30 k cycles in H2-O2 operation, and a high mass-specific power density of 8.24 W mg-1Pt in H2-Air operation with a slight loss of cell voltage@0.8 A cm-2 of 28 mV after 30 k cycles. The high performance can be ascribed to the high Pt area exposure, the enhanced Pt-Co coupling, and the prevented agglomeration in the mesoporous carbon wall. Overall, this strategy may contribute to the commercialization of fuel cells.

Abstract:A gas‐phase ordered alloying strategy is proposed to construct an effective synergistic catalytic system that blends PtM intermetallic compounds (PtM IMC, M = Fe, Cu, and Ni) and dense isolated transition metal sites (M‐N4) on nitrogen‐doped carbon (NC). The obtained Pt1Fe1 IMC cooperating with Fe‐N4 sites achieves outstanding electrocatalytic activity in oxygen reduction and fuel cells. The design of an efficient catalytic system with low Pt loading and excellent stability for the acidic oxygen reduction reaction is still a challenge for the extensive application of proton‐exchange membrane fuel cells. Here, a gas‐phase ordered alloying strategy is proposed to construct an effective synergistic catalytic system that blends PtM intermetallic compounds (PtM IMC, M = Fe, Cu, and Ni) and dense isolated transition metal sites (M‐N4) on nitrogen‐doped carbon (NC). This strategy enables Pt nanoparticles and defects on the NC support to timely trap flowing metal salt without partial aggregation, which is attributed to the good diffusivity of gaseous transition metal salts with low boiling points. In particular, the resulting Pt1Fe1 IMC cooperating with Fe‐N4 sites achieves cooperative oxygen reduction with a half‐wave potential up to 0.94 V and leads to a high mass activity of 0.51 A mgPt−1 and only 23.5% decay after 30 k cycles, both of which exceed DOE 2025 targets. This strategy provides a method for reducing Pt loading in fuel cells by integrating Pt‐based intermetallics and single transition metal sites to produce an efficient synergistic catalytic system.

Abstract:Carbon-supported PtCo intermetallic nanoparticles rank as one of the most efficient cathode catalysts for proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs). Nevertheless, developing simple and scalable synthetic approaches for effective size control of this type of catalyst at high Pt contents continues to be a significant challenge. Herein, we introduce a sulfur-containing molecule-assisted ball-milling method, enabling the multigram-scale synthesis of PtCo intermetallic catalysts with a high Pt content of 48 wt %. This method results in a fine dispersion of PtCo intermetallic nanoparticles on carbon black supports with an average particle size of 5.29 nm. The resulting catalyst demonstrates remarkable performance in H2-Air PEMFC tests, exemplified by a power density of 1.16 W/cm2 at 0.7 V and maintaining 65% of its mass activity after an accelerated durability test.
Metal bond strength regulation enables large-scale synthesis of intermetallic nanocrystals for practical fuel cells

Abstract:Structurally ordered L10-PtM (M = Fe, Co, Ni and so on) intermetallic nanocrystals, benefiting from the chemically ordered structure and higher stability, are one of the best electrocatalysts used for fuel cells. However, their practical development is greatly plagued by the challenge that the high-temperature (>600 °C) annealing treatment necessary for realizing the ordered structure usually leads to severe particle sintering, morphology change and low ordering degree, which makes it very difficult for the gram-scale preparation of desirable PtM intermetallic nanocrystals with high Pt content for practical fuel cell applications. Here we report a new concept involving the low-melting-point-metal (M' = Sn, Ga, In)-induced bond strength weakening strategy to reduce Ea and promote the ordering process of PtM (M = Ni, Co, Fe, Cu and Zn) alloy catalysts for a higher ordering degree. We demonstrate that the introduction of M' can reduce the ordering temperature to extremely low temperatures (≤450 °C) and thus enable the preparation of high-Pt-content (≥40 wt%) L10-Pt-M-M' intermetallic nanocrystals as well as ten-gram-scale production. X-ray spectroscopy studies, in situ electron microscopy and theoretical calculations reveal the fundamental mechanism of the Sn-facilitated ordering process at low temperatures, which involves weakened bond strength and consequently reduced Ea via Sn doping, the formation and fast diffusion of low-coordinated surface free atoms, and subsequent L10 nucleation. The developed L10-Ga-PtNi/C catalysts display outstanding performance in H2-air fuel cells under both light- and heavy-duty vehicle conditions. Under the latter condition, the 40% L10-Pt50Ni35Ga15/C catalyst delivers a high current density of 1.67 A cm-2 at 0.7 V and retains 80% of the current density after extended 90,000 cycles, which exceeds the United States Department of Energy performance metrics and represents among the best cathodic electrocatalysts for practical proton-exchange membrane fuel cells.

Abstract:The cost and endurance anxiety about proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs) has prompted the rapid development of platinum-based (Pt-based) oxygen reduction electrocatalysts towards smaller particle sizes, higher durability and alloying. However, well-balanced these advanced trends by a simple approach is difficult in practice, because the existing solutions are problematic in removing the protective organic coating or oxide shell that preventing the high-temperature agglomeration of Pt-based nanocrystals, or broadening the size range of Pt-based nanocrystals which caused by the heterogeneous distribution of heteroatom anchor points on supports. With a self-developed strategy that based on the atomic layer deposition (ALD), we have addressed these problems in two aspects. One is directly loading size and distribution controllable Pt nanocrystals on diverse supports, and another is indirectly depositing easily removed ultra-thin metal oxide coating with dual functions on prefabricated ultrasmall Pt nanocrystals to restrain their sintering effect during high temperature ordering. By controlling the temperature and pulse time of ALD, we successfully synthesized ultrasmall (< 2 nm) Pt nanocrystals on surface inactive TiC nanoparticles and nanowires. These two new electrocatalysts exhibited comparable oxygen reduction activity and durability on par with commercial Pt/C with lower Pt loading. And using this strategy, about 1 nm ZnO coating on Pt nanocrystals was performed to construct uniform PtZn intermetallic nanocrystals with the ultrasmall size of 2.50 ± 0.65 nm and excellent stability for oxygen reduction reaction. The mass activity of PtZn intermetallic nanocrystals reaches to 0.60 A mgPt -1 at 0.9 V (6 times than commercial Pt/C) and only 13 mV decrease of half-wave potential after 30000 cycles of accelerated durability testing rivaling the most recently reported PtZn catalysts. Ultrasmall sizes and excellent features of our Pt and Pt-based intermetallic nanocrystals are all attributed to the accurate control of ALD and could be a promising method applying to other Pt-based intermetallic nanocrystals.
Synthesis of Structurally Stable and Highly Active PtCo3 Ordered Nanoparticles Through an Easily Operated Strategy for Enhanced Oxygen Reduction Reaction

Abstract:Constructing robust and cost-effective Pt-based electrocatalysts with an easily operated strategy remains a crucial obstacle to fuel cell applications. Conventional Pt-based catalysts suffer from high Pt content and an arduous synthetic process. Herein, through the spray dehydration method and annealing treatment, facile producible synthesis of a small-sized (5.2 nm) low-Pt (10.5 wt %) ordered PtCo3/C catalyst (O-PtCo3/C) for oxygen reduction reaction is reported. The fast spray evaporation rate contributes to small size and uniform nucleation of nanoparticles (NPs) on carbon support. O-PtCo3/C-600 exhibits efficient electrocatalytic performance with mass activity (MA) 6.0-fold and specific activity 3.9-fold higher than commercial Pt/C. The ordered chemical structure generates superior stability with merely 3.5% decay in MA after 10,000 potential cycles. Density functional theory calculations reveal that the enhanced catalytic performance originates from rational modification of d-band through strain and ordering effect and accompanying weaker adsorption of intermediate OH. This work highlights the potentials of low-Pt PtM3-type ordered NPs for prospective fuel cell cathodic catalysis. The proposed facile and practical synthetic strategy also shows promising prospects for preparing effective Pt-based electrocatalysts.

Abstract:The harsh working environments of proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs) pose huge challenges to the stability of Pt-based alloy catalysts. The widespread presence of metallic bonds with significantly delocalized electron distribution often lead to component segregation and rapid performance decay. Here we report L10 -Pt2 CuGa intermetallic nanoparticles with a unique covalent atomic interaction between Pt-Ga as high-performance PEMFC cathode catalysts. The L10 -Pt2 CuGa/C catalyst shows superb oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) activity and stability in fuel cell cathode (mass activity=0.57 A mgPt -1 at 0.9 V, peak power density=2.60/1.24 W cm-2 in H2 -O2 /air, 28 mV voltage loss at 0.8 A cm-2 after 30 000 cycles). Theoretical calculations reveal the optimized adsorption of oxygen intermediates via the formed biaxial strain on L10 -Pt2 CuGa surface, and the durability enhancement stems from the stronger Pt-M bonds than those in L11 -PtCu resulted from Pt-Ga covalent interactions.

Abstract:Fuel cells are recognized as promising alternatives to existing conventional energy systems for a sustainable future. However, the synthesis of efficient and robust platinum (Pt) based catalysts remains a challenge for practical fuel cell applications. Herein, the Pt3Co/C nanoparticles with about 4.45 nm are firstly prepared by a pre–lithiation–deposition strategy on C carrier and used as efficient electrocatalysts for cathodic oxygen reduction reaction. Notably, after heat treatment at 600 °C, the obtained Pt3Co/C–600 catalyst shows excellent mass and specific activities (MA and SA) of 0.69 A mgPt–1 and 1.01 mA cmPt–2, respectively, which are more than one order of magnitude higher than that of Pt/C–600. In particular, after accelerated durability testing with 20k cycles, the durability of the Pt3Co/C–600 catalyst (98.3% retention of MA) is much higher than that of Pt3Co/C–600 without pre–lithiation (42.5% retention of MA). The alloying of Pt and Co and the use of pre–lithiation to enable strong interactions between the carbon carriers and the Pt–Co nanoparticles contributed to the increased activity and excellent stability. This work provides a new perspective for the development of high–performance and low–cost Pt alloy electrocatalysts.

Abstract:Small-sized Pt-based intermetallic compounds (IMCs) with unique electronic and geometrical structures are promising candidates as next-generation oxygen-reduction reaction (ORR) catalysts in proton-exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs). However, the synthesis of IMC catalysts remains challenging owing to the trade-off relation between the alloying/ordering degree and particle aggregation/sintering under a high-temperature annealing process. Herein, we demonstrate a cuprous sulfide (Cu 1.96 S) intermediate-assisted strategy for the scalable synthesis of PtCu 3 intermetallic electrocatalysts on an S-doped carbon black support. We identify that the Cu 1.96 S intermediate formed at low temperature gradually releases metallic Cu species at high temperatures to form a small-sized and uniform Pt–Cu alloy with target stoichiometry, which eventually ensures the formation of well-ordered intermetallic PtCu 3 structures. The prepared intermetallic PtCu 3 catalysts exhibit enhanced ORR performance with a mass activity of 3.2 A mg Pt −1 and retain 72% of the initial activity after durability tests.

Abstract:The design of highly efficient and robust platinum-based electrocatalysts is pivotal for proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFC). One of the long-standing issues for PEMFC is the rapid deactivation of the catalyst under working conditions. Here, we report a simple synthesis strategy for ultrafine PtCo alloy nanoparticles loaded on a unique carbon support derived from a zeolitic imidazolate framework-67 (ZIF-67) and Ketjen Black (KB) composite, exhibiting a remarkable catalytic performance toward the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and PEMFC. Benefitting from the N-doping and wide pore size distribution of the composite carbon supports, the growth of PtCo nanoparticles can be evenly restricted, leading to a uniform distribution. The Pt-integrated catalyst delivers an outstanding electrochemical performance with a mass activity that is 8.6 times higher than that of the commercial Pt/C catalyst. Impressively, the accelerated durability test (ADT) demonstrates that the hybrid carbon support can significantly enhance the durability. Theoretical simulations highlight the synergistic contribution between the supports and the PtCo nanoparticles. Moreover, hydrogen-oxygen fuel cells assembled with the catalyst exhibited a high power density of 1.83 W cm-2 at 4 A cm-2. These results provide a new opportunity to design advanced catalysts for PEMFC.

Abstract:Atomically ordered intermetallic Pt‐based nanoparticles, recognized as advanced electrocatalysts, exhibit superior activity for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) in fuel cell cathodes. Nevertheless, the formation of these ordered structures typically necessitates elevated annealing temperatures, which can accelerate particle growth and diminished reactivity. In this study, we synthesized carbon‐supported platinum‐cobalt intermetallic compounds (PtCo‐IMCs) with sub‐4 nm particle sizes and uniform distribution. These catalysts, characterized by high platinum content and exceptional ORR activity, are specifically tailored for heavy‐duty vehicle (HDV) applications. The PtCo‐IMCs exhibited significantly enhanced catalytic performance and durability compared to conventional Pt‐based catalysts, utilizing platinum nanoparticles as nucleation sites to promote growth. This method effectively retained smaller particle sizes while achieving a higher degree of ordering and alloying during high‐temperature annealing. Optimization of the annealing temperature resulted in peak activity and stability at 800 °C. The mass activity (MA) of the PtCo‐800 catalyst was 2.7‐fold and 1.8‐fold that of the commercial Pt/C and disordered PtCo catalysts, respectively. Additionally, the single cell employing the PtCo‐800 catalyst showed a minimal voltage loss of only 27 mV at a current density of 2 A cm‐2 after 30,000 cycles of the accelerated durability test (ADT), underscoring its long‐term stability.

Abstract:Highly active and durable oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) catalysts with sufficient activity and stability of Pt are beneficial for the commercialization of proton exchange membrane fuel cells. Here we report an effective approach to prepare a composite catalyst comprising of ordered L12-Pt3Fe intermetallic nanoparticles interact with single atom Fe-Nx-Cy active sites. The addition of Fe and the confinement effect of hierarchical porous structure limit the growth of intermetallic particle size (around 2.5 nm). The ligand effect of the electron transfer from Fe to Pt and the synergistic interaction between L12-Pt3Fe and Fe-Nx-Cy work together to reduce oxygen intermediates adsorption and improve kinetics process. Experimentally, the L12-Pt3Fe/CFe-N-C catalyst shows high mass activity and specific activity at 1.010 A/mgPt and 1.166 mA/cm2, respectively, which are 5.8 and 5.1 times higher than those of commercial Pt/C (0.174 A/mgPt and 0.230 mA/cm2). Thanks to the more stable L12 structure, L12-Pt3Fe/CFe-N-C exhibits better durability (14 mV E1/2 loss of L12-Pt3Fe/CFe-N-C and 33 mV E1/2 loss of commercial Pt/C) after 30,000 cycles accelerated stress tests. The strategy to design and prepare small particle Pt-based intermetallic alloys coordinated with M-N-C active sites provides a new direction to obtain low-cost and easily prepared effective ORR catalysts.

Abstract:Pt intermetallic compounds (IMCs) have attracted considerable interest due to their satisfactory activity and durability towards oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). However, downsizing the IMC nanoparticles while maintaining a high ordering degree remains an enormous challenge. Here, we present a "pre-anchoring bimetal" strategy to couple the Pt–Fe atoms into one heteronuclear bimetallic organic molecule enabling the targeted preparation of a highly ordered and small sized Pt1Fe1-IMC/C catalyst. Advanced structural measurements ascertain the formation of Pt1Fe1-IMC/C nanoparticles with mean sizes of ca. 4.1 nm and ordering degree of ∼78%, thus verifying the feasibility of this strategy. The resultant Pt1Fe1-IMC/C catalyst exhibits an enhanced ORR activity with a mass activity (MA@0.9 V) of 0.45 A mg Pt −1 and preeminent durability with only ∼18% decay in MA after a 30 000-cycle accelerated durability test. A H 2 –O 2 /air fuel cell integrated with the as-prepared Pt1Fe1-IMC/C delivers a record-high peak power density (2.47/1.21 W cm −2 ) at 80 °C, making it one of the best-performing cathodic catalyst to date.
