Abstract:Traditional antimicrobial therapies always rely on antibiotics, which have led to the overuse of antibiotics and caused the emergence of multidrug-resistant (MDR) bacteria in recent years. In this study, an efficient and broad-spectrum antimicrobial system based on chitosan (CS)-encapsulated multifunctional metal-organic nanoparticles (Fe-TCPP@CS NPs) was constructed to integrate the electrostatic targeting property and photodynamic and photothermal antimicrobial therapies. Tetrakis (4-carboxyphenyl) porphyrin (TCPP) coordinated with Fe3O clusters to form nanoparticles, Fe3O clusters enabled low-temperature photothermal therapy as well as avoiding the porphyrins self-aggregation to ensure the singlet oxygen yield under irradiation, and CS as the outer layer covered on Fe-TCPP nanoparticles could improve the dispersibility in aqueous solution and enhance the electrostatic binding with bacterial cell membranes to improve the antibacterial activities. After simple synthesis, we successfully obtained ideal and biocompatible multifunctional nanoparticles and verified their antimicrobial properties. Under light irradiation, Fe-TCPP@CS NPs could produce enough ROS and heat to kill S. aureus, E. coli and methicillin-resistant S. aureus with a synergistic effect. Therefore, Fe-TCPP@CS NPs would be an efficient and broad-spectrum antimicrobial agent, providing a novel approach to bacterial infection therapy.
Atomic-layer Fe2O3-modified 2D porphyrinic metal-organic framework for enhanced photocatalytic disinfection through electron-withdrawing effect

Abstract:In this work, an atomic-layer Fe2O3-modified two-dimensional (2D) porphyrinic metal-organic framework (MOF) was prepared (2D MOF-Fe2O3), which exhibits unique interfacial electron-withdrawing effect via charge transfer pathways from Zn2O8 and C-O bonds to Fe-O bonds. Concretely, the atomic-layer Fe2O3 is deposited on 2D porphyrinic MOF (ZnTCPP) by atomic layer deposition technique to enhance the photocatalytic performance and the subsequent bacteria-killing efficacy. After 20 min light irradiation, the photocatalytic antibacterial efficacy of 2D MOF-Fe2O3 can reach up to 99.9%. The underlying mechanism of enhanced photocatalytic activity is that the heterointerface between 2D MOF and Fe2O3 can facilitate the transfer of lots of photogenerated electrons from 2D MOF to Fe2O3, where 2D MOF and Fe2O3 act as electronic donator and receptor, respectively. This work provides an insight into developing highly effective photocatalysts by using electron-withdrawing modulator to optimize charge transfer pathway.

Abstract:We herein fabricated poly(ethyleneimine)-stabilized covalent organic framework nanosheets (PEI-COF NSs) via hydrothermal treatment and showed their roles in enhancing light-responsive oxidase-like activity; the interaction of citrate-capped gold nanoparticles (C-AuNPs) with PEI-COF NSs, named as PEI-COF NSs@C-AuNPs, results in an increased contact with dissolved O2 due to large surface and porosity of PEI-COF NSs and abundant amino functional groups on their planar surface. As a result of these features, the conversion of dissolved oxygen into superoxide anions and hydroxyl radicals under visible light can also be effectively catalyzed. Thus, PEI-COF NSs@C-AuNPs under visible light can catalyze more efficiently than C-AuNPs. Subsequently, the surface modification of PEI-COF NSs@C-AuNPs with thiolate polyethylene glycol-functionalized folic acid allowed the colorimetric sensing of folic acid receptor-overexpressed MCF-7 cells with a limit of detection of 30 cells/mL. Successively, the treatment of PEI-COF NSs@C-AuNPs with NaBH4 produces more surface defects, providing almost complete photodegradation of tetracycline and ciprofloxacin. In addition, the citrate-capped silver nanoparticles (C-AgNPs) decorated with PEI-COF NSs (named PEI-COF NSs@C-AgNPs) showed excellent antibacterial activity against Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus cells with 17 and 34 ng/mL minimum inhibitory concentrations and 2.1 and 1.8 g/mL inhibition zone diameters, respectively, under visible light; the bactericidal mechanism of PEI-COF NSs@C-AgNPs was further investigated using electron microscopy-related techniques.

Abstract:Reasonably combining the advantages of heterojunction constructed by a variety of two-dimensional materials and metal oxide nanoparticles (NPs) is an effective strategy to improve the efficiency of photocatalytic sterilization. In this work, TpPa-1-COF, as a stable semiconductor, was in situ grown on Ti3C2-MXene through the Schiff base reaction and anchored with Cu2O NPs to obtain an efficient photocatalytic bactericide. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy and photoluminescence spectra of nanocomposites showed that the photogenerated carrier migration rate as well as the production of reactive oxygen species was improved and the carrier life was prolonged. The work function at the interface was analyzed by using the first principle calculation based on density functional theory. Both TpPa-1/Ti3C2 interface and Ti3C2/Cu2O interface had large built-in electric field to promote the migration of carriers between layers, so as to realize efficient photocatalysis and reduce photo-corrosion. The obtained Ti3C2/TpPa-1/ Cu2O nanocomposites showed excellent antibacterial rates against S. aureus and P. aeruginosa, which were antibacterial rates of 98.90% and 99.62% and were increased by 50% and 33% compared with pure TpPa-1-COF. It provides a new idea for the development of photocatalytic bactericides in the field of marine antifouling.

Abstract:In this work, supramolecular tetrakis(4-carboxyphenyl)porphyrin/ZnFe layered double hydroxide (S-TCPP/ZnFe-LDH) heterojunction was developed and applied as photocatalytic surface bonding on flexible substrate (cotton fabric, CF) to fabricate an effective photocatalytic platform (S-TCPP/ZnFe-LDH@CF) for antibiotic degradation and bacterial inactivation. In which, S-TCPP/ZnFe-LDH heterojunction was synthesized using an in-situ self-assembly method, and the supramolecular porphyrin nanocrystals can interact with ZnFe-LDH nanosheets via covalently combining. The host catalyst ZnFe-LDH in this photocatalytic platform has limited photocatalytic activity . The introduction of photosensitive S-TCPP can effectively improve the activity of the photocatalytic surface. The photocatalytic degradation rate of antibiotic ciprofloxacin over S-TCPP/ZnFe-LDH@CF was 2.87 times higher than ZnFe-LDH@CF. The easy-recovered S-TCPP/ZnFe-LDH@CF also can completely inactivate typical Gram bacteria (10 6 CFU/mL) within 60 min of visible light irradiation. Moreover, S-TCPP/ZnFe-LDH@CF retained considerable stability and durability without obvious metal ions leakage after the reaction. The results of free radical quenching experiments, ESR tests, photoelectrochemical studies and band structures analyses indicate that the combination of S-TCPP and ZnFe-LDH was closely related to a type II photocatalysis heterojunction with the matched band positions. And S-TCPP/ZnFe-LDH heterojunction demonstrated the ability to effectively activate molecular oxygen via both electron transfer and energy transfer approaches to produce multiple reactive oxygen species . The grafting of S-TCPP on ZnFe-LDH broadened the light response range and intensity, as well as enhanced electron transfer and charge separation, showing significantly improved water purification and disinfection capabilities. This work provides a new advanced photocatalytic surface based on photoactive LDH combined with photosensitive supramolecular materials for the efficient treatment of wastewater containing organic pollutants and biohazards.

Abstract:Nanozymes have drawn increasing attention due to unique enzyme-mimic catalytic activities for the treatment of bacterial infections. Herein, a novel tri-metal nanozyme for synergistic eradication of Escherichia coli (E. coli) and Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) was generated by Mo/Fe doped carbon dots (Mo/Fe-CDs) wrapping copper peroxide (CuO2) nanozyme (Mo/Fe@CuO2). Mo/Fe@CuO2 showed near-infrared (NIR) light-enhanced peroxidase-like catalytic activity, and H2O2 self-supply to promote the generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) for highly efficient antibacterial photothermal therapy. The CuO2 could generate H2O2 in the acidic microenvironment, and Mo/Fe-CDs consequently could convert H2O2 to hydroxyl radicals (·OH), resulting in the improvement of sterilization efficiency. Interestingly, Mo/Fe-CDs could activate the transformation of Cu2+ to Cu+ through the co-catalytic reaction based on the Mo4+/Mo6+ and Fe3+/Fe2+ redox couples, and provided photonic hyperthermia (PTT) to enhance the peroxidase-like activity. Meanwhile, Mo/Fe@CuO2 showed glutathione (GSH) oxidase-like activity, which can achieve the depletion of glutathione (GSH) in bacteria, thus significantly improving the bactericidal effect. The collaborative eradication of bacteria, through innovative metal carbon-based nanozyme technology, provides a powerful and feasible approach to treating bacterial infections that threaten human health.

Abstract:Antibacterial nanomaterials provide promising alternative strategies to combat the bacterial infection due to deteriorating resistance. However, few have been practically applied due to the lack of clear antibacterial mechanisms. In this work, we selected good-biocompatibility iron-doped CDs (Fe-CDs) with antibacterial activity as a comprehensive research model to systematically reveal the intrinsic antibacterial mechanism. Through energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) mapping of in situ ultrathin sections of bacteria, we found that a large amount of iron was accumulated inside the bacteria treated with Fe-CDs. Then, combining the data of cell level and transcriptomics, it can be elucidated that Fe-CDs could interact with cell membranes, enter bacterial cells through iron transport and infiltration, increase intracellular iron levels, trigger increased reactive oxygen species (ROS), and lead to disruption of Glutathione (GSH)-dependent antioxidant mechanisms. Excessive ROS further leads to lipid peroxidation and DNA damage in cells, lipid peroxidation destroys the integrity of the cell membrane, and finally leads to the leakage of intracellular substances resulting in bacterial growth inhibition and death. This result provides important insights into the antibacterial mechanism of Fe-CDs and further provides a basis for the deep application of nanomaterials in biomedicine.

Abstract:The entire coding region for rat seminal vesicle secretory protein IV was obtained on a 3.5 kb Eco RI fragment isolated from a genomic library in lambda Charon 4A. The coding sequence for SVS IV message is interrupted twice by introns. The first lies just downstream from the juncture of the 21 amino acid secretory signal peptide with the start of the mature protein, and the second lies in the 3'-nontranslated region. The major transcriptional start site was mapped by primer extention and is 22 nucleotides upstream from the translational initiation codon. S1 protection experiments indicated additional minor transcriptional starts about 27 and 50 nucleotides further upstream from the major cap site. The entire transcriptional unit comprises about 1740 nucleotides. The SVS IV gene does not belong to an obvious gene family, and it is conserved in mice and guinea pigs.

Abstract:Antibiotic contamination has become an environmental problem that cannot be ignored, and there is an endless demand for high performance advanced oxidation technologies to efficiently remove antibiotics from wastewater. Iron (II) phthalocyanine (FePc) with monoatomic dispersed iron sites has great potential for Fenton-like catalysis, but its tendency to aggregate in aqueous environments leads to self-degradation, poor electrical conductivity, and masking of active centers, which severely limits its practice application. Herein, aiming at these disadvantages, a novel FePc/g-C 3 N 4 (CNFP)/H 2 O 2 photo-Fenton system was constructed. In CNFP, the highly dispersed FePc on g-C 3 N 4 not only avoided the self-degradation caused by high aggregation, but also provided more active centers. Additionally, the π-π interaction between FePc and g-C 3 N 4 formed a quick-speed electron transfer routeway, which enabled the fast transfer of photogenerated electrons. g-C 3 N 4 as a photocatalytic center can continuously provide photogenerated electrons for FePc to realize the rapid regeneration of Fe(II). In CNFP/H 2 O 2 photo-Fenton system, the coexistence of radicals and non-radicals (OH, O 2 − , h + , and 1 O 2 ) enhanced the anti-interference ability. The self-degradation analysis showed that FePc had obvious self-degradation in the photo-Fenton process, while CNFP had no self-degradation. Furthermore, the CNFP/H 2 O 2 photo-Fenton system was carefully evaluated by pH effect, ions effect, toxicity assessment, and cycling experiments, revealing its application potential in practical wastewater treatment.

2D/2D Co3O4/BiOCl nanocomposite with enhanced antibacterial activity under full spectrum: Synergism of mesoporous structure, photothermal effect and photocatalytic reactive oxygen species

Abstract:The overuse of antibiotics has caused the emergence of drug-resistant bacteria and even superbugs, which makes it imperative to develop promising antibiotic-free alternatives. Herein, a multimodal antibacterial nanoplatform of two dimensional/two dimensional (2D/2D) mesoporous Co3O4/BiOCl nanocomposite is constructed, which possesses the effect of "kill three birds with one stone": (1) the use of mesoporous Co3O4 can enlarge the surface area of the nanocomposite and promote the adsorption of bacteria; (2) Co3O4 displays remarkable full-spectrum absorption and photo-induced self-heating effect, which can raise the temperature of Co3O4/BiOCl and help to kill bacteria; (3) the p-type Co3O4 and n-type BiOCl form a p-n heterojunction, which promotes the separation of photoelectrons and holes, thus producing more reactive oxygen species (ROS) for killing bacteria. The synergism of mesoporous structure, photothermal effect and photocatalytic ROS makes the developed Co3O4/BiOCl a promising antibacterial material, which shows outstanding antibacterial activity with an inhibition rate of nearly 100 % against Escherichia coli (E. coli) within 8 min. This work provides inspiration for designing multimodal synergistic nanoplatform for antibacterial applications.
Construction of MIL-53(Fe) metal-organic framework modified by silver phosphate nanoparticles as a novel Z-scheme photocatalyst: Visible-light photocatalytic performance and mechanism investigation

Abstract:Novel heterostructure photocatalysts consisted of MIL-53(Fe) and silver phosphate (Ag3PO4) were successfully developed through a simple in situ precipitation strategy in this work. The photocatalytic activities of the as-synthesized samples were assessed via multiple antibiotics degradation, including tetracycline (TC), oxytetracycline (OTC), chlortetracycline (CTC) and deoxytetracycline (DCL). All the obtained Ag3PO4/MIL-53(Fe) composites exhibited much more superior photocatalytic activities than pure MIL-53(Fe) and Ag3PO4. Especially, the optimal composite with 1:3 mass ratio of Ag3PO4:MIL-53(Fe) (APM-3) displayed the best photocatalytic activity, for which the removal of antibiotics was 93.72% (TC), 90.12% (OTC), 85.54% (CTC) and 91.74% (DCL) under visible light irradiation for 1 h. The APM-3 also exhibited good photostability and recyclability. Three-dimensional (3D) EEMs (excitation-emission matrix fluorescence spectroscopy) was applied to further investigate the TC degradation process, and the TC intermediates were identified by high-performance liquid-mass spectrometry (HPLC-MS). The possible degradation pathway for TC was also discussed. In addition, electron spin resonance (ESR) measurement and quenching experiments verified that O2 −, OH and h+ radicals all worked during the degradation process. In the end, a possible Z-scheme heterostructure model composed of MIL-53(Fe), metallic Ag and Ag3PO4 was proposed, in which the small reducible Ag nanoparticles functioned as a center for charge transmission. Powerful redox ability and effective separation of photoinduced carriers can be achieved in this Z-scheme heterostructure system. The findings of this work could offer a novel way to design MOF-based materials for remediation of contaminated water.

Abstract:Single-atom catalysts based on carbon-based materials have a high catalytic activity and excellent photothermal performance. In this article, iron single-atom catalysts loaded on C-MOF-5 carriers have been prepared for the application of photothermal catalytic antimicrobial therapy. Iron single-atom catalysts (Fe SACs) exhibit significant peroxidase-like catalytic activity and catalyze the production of large amounts of hydroxyl radicals (·OH) when hydrogen peroxide is present, which have a killing effect on bacteria. In addition, the excellent photothermal properties of the carbon material allow Fe SACs to rapidly generate a localized high temperature under NIR-II laser light (1064 nm) to kill bacteria and enhance peroxidase-like catalytic activity to produce a large number of hydroxyl radicals. In vitro bacterial assays demonstrated that the synergistic antimicrobial strategy of chemodynamic therapy (CDT) and photothermal therapy (PTT) is nearly 100% effective against E. coli and S. aureus, demonstrating greater antimicrobial efficiency than chemodynamic therapy and photothermal therapy alone. In vivo bacterial assay shows better wound healing in mice treated with CDT, PTT synergistic antimicrobial therapy. In summary, these carbon-based single-atom catalysts could be used as antimicrobial agents through the CDT and PTT synergistic antimicrobial effect.

Abstract:Photocatalytic antimicrobial is a promising advanced oxidation antibacterial technology that can utilize solar energy to achieve antibacterial function. However, due to the influence of diurnal variation, photocatalytic antimicrobials cannot maintain a continuous antibacterial effect in practical applications. Herein, a TiO 2 fiber with CuO particle (TiO 2 /CuO) pn -type heterojunction with dual inactivation of Escherichia coli has been designed and prepared for water treatment. The formation of pn heterojunction and its high efficiency of charge separation and transfer were confirmed through HRTEM, FESEM, UV–Vis and photoelectrochemical tests, while the charge separation process of the heterojunction under visible-light irradiation was systematically investigated. The results showed that the antimicrobial rate of TiO 2 /CuO composites was 64.7% at 10 min under dark conditions. In contrast, under light exposure, the antibacterial rate could reach 96.2% for 10 min and 100% for 20 min. This research holds promise for advancing the construction of pn heterojunctions and provides a novel insight into reducing the dependence of photocatalytic antimicrobials on light.

Abstract:Antibiotic resistance and biofilm formation have represented a major public health concern to the treatment of infectious diseases. Photodynamic therapy can not only generate toxic reactive oxygen species (ROSs) to kill bacteria but also stimulate the immune response, which is less likely to induce bacterial resistance and represented as an effective antibacterial treatment. In this study, we presented a porphyrin (TPP) /ciprofloxacin (CIP) based supramolecular photosensitizer nanoparticles (TPP-CIP NPs) which could generate ROSs, cascade release antibiotics, and trigger immune response for antibacterial, biofilm dispersion and wound healing via photodynamic-immunotherapy and enhanced antibiotic penetration. Upon light irradiation, the porphyrins in the system generated ROSs and cleaved the thioketal linkers, releasing ciprofloxacin for killing antibiotic-sensitive bacteria that have developed because of the destruction of their external structure by ROSs. Furthermore, the ROSs simultaneously activated effective immune responses including the activation of dendritic cells and T cells. In vitro studies illustrated that the supramolecular nanoparticles exhibited effective antibacterial performance against both Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria, and biofilm dispersion capacity. In vivo studies confirmed TPP-CIP NPs possessed effective antibacterial effect and wound healing against methicillin resistant staphylococcus infection. This research provides a promising synergistic strategy for combating multi-drug resistant bacterial infections

Abstract:The semiconductor-based photocatalysts with local surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) effect can extend light response to near-infrared region (NIR), as well as promote charge-carriers transfer, which provide a novel insight into designing light-driven photocatalyst with excellent photocatalytic performance. Here, we designed cost-effective wide-spectrum Zn2In2S5/W18O49 composite with enhanced photocatalytic performance based on a dual-channel charge transfer pathway. Benefiting from the synergistic effect of Z-scheme heterostructure and unique LSPR effect, the interfacial charge-carriers transfer rate and light-absorbing ability of Zn2In2S5/W18O49 were enhanced significantly under visible and NIR (vis-NIR) light irradiation. More reactive oxygen species (ROS) were formed by efficient molecular oxygen activation, which were the critical factors for both Escherichia coli (E. coli) photoinactivation and tetracycline (TC) photodegradation. The enhancement of molecular oxygen activation (MOA) ability was verified via quantitative analyses, which evaluated the amount of ROS through degrading nitrotetrazolium blue chloride (NBT) and p-phthalic acid (TA). By combining theoretical calculations with diverse experimental results, we proposed a credible photocatalytic reaction mechanism for antibiotic degradation and bacteria inactivation. This study develops a new insight into constructing promising photocatalysts with efficient photocatalytic activity in practical wastewater treatment.

Abstract:Recent years, many scholars have been greatly intrigued by the large amounts of emerging antibiotics pollutants (such as tetracycline, penicillin, etc.) in natural water environments. Photo-Fenton oxidation, a highly advanced oxidation technique, has been seen as a promising way to effectively break down these pollutants by generating a great deal of reactive oxygen species (ROS). Herein, iron phthalocyanine nanodots (FePc)/ultra-thin porous carbon nitride (UPCN) nanocomposites were successfully prepared by thermal polymerization and calcination processes. In the system with a small amount (10 μL) of hydrogen peroxide (H 2 O 2 ) and natural pH conditions, the 1%-FePc/UPCN nanocatalcatalyst had the best degradation effect, and the TC removal rate reached 89% within 20 min and 99% within 60 min. The excellent performance of the nano-composites is ascribed to the large surface area, multiple active sites, small pore size, easy excitation and fast transfers of photogenerated carriers induced by π - π bond. In addition, the improvement of the degradation of TC is also due to the synergistic effect of the photocatalytic reaction center dominated by UPCN and Fenton reaction center dominated by FePc in the system, simultaneously. In this study, a synergistic dual-reaction center catalytic system was constructed to provide new insights and strategies for the degradation of organic pollutants in natural water environments.

Abstract:We developed the novel Fe-doped Zn-based coordination polymer (CP) composites (, n = 1–3) with superior visible-light-driven photocatalytic activity. Herein, the composites were prepared using a newly designed Zn-CP {[Zn(3-padpe)(1,3-BDC)]·H 2 O} n using mixed ligands 4,4′-bis(3-pyridylformamide)diphenylether (3-padpe) and 1,3-benzenedicarboxylic acid (1,3-H 2 BDC) and FeSO 4 by a facile approach at room temperature. The degradation of several tetracyclines (TCs), such as chlortetracycline (CTC), tetracycline hydrochloride (TC), and oxytetracycline (OTC) under visible-light irradiation were used to assess the photocatalytic performance. The generated ideal composite showed high photocatalytic activity under visible light irradiation, for which the removal rate of antibiotics were 90.60% for CTC in 100 min, 90.00% for TC in 100 min, and 87.70% for OTC in 30 min, respectively. The superior photocatalytic performance was attributed to the Fe–O bond formation which expanded the optical absorption range and significantly increased the separation effectiveness of photogenerated charges. These properties enhanced the photoactivity of for photocatalytic reaction under visible light irradiation. Additionally, the showed excellent photostability and recycleability. The detailed intermediates and pathway of CTC degradation were also illustrated. According to the quenching studies and electron spin resonance (ESR) spectra characterization, the main species involved in the photocatalytic reaction were the radicals h + and O 2 – . In addition, the possible photocatalytic reaction mechanisms were deeply discussed. This work offers fresh insight into the design of CP-based photocatalytic materials and demonstrates the broad application potential of composites in environmental remediation.
