Abstract:Background. Effects of veneering porcelain thickness and background shade on the shade match of zirconia-based restorations are unclear. The aim of this study was to evaluate the impacts of veneering porcelain thickness and background shade on the shade match of zirconia-based restorations. Methods. Forty A2 shade veneered zirconia disk specimens (10 mm in diameter) were fabricated, with veneering porcelain thicknesses of 1.6, 1.8, 2.0 and 2.2 mm. Three backgrounds were made of A2 shade composite resin (A2), nickel-chromium alloy (NC) and amalgam (AM). The veneered zirconia specimens were placed on the backgrounds. CIELab values were measured with a spectrophotometer. ΔE values were measured to determine color differences between the specimens and the A2 VITA classical shade (target shade). ΔE values were compared with an acceptability threshold (ΔE=3.7). Repeated measures ANOVA, Bonferroni, and 1-sample t-test were used to analyze data (P<0.05). Results. Mean ΔE values ranged between 1.9 and 5.0. The veneering porcelain thickness, the background shade and their interaction affected the ΔE (P<0.0001). The minimum veneering porcelain thickness for the shade match was 2 mm for NC and 1.8 mm for AM. Conclusion. Veneering porcelain thickness and background shade affected the shade match of zirconia-based restorations. With dark-shaded backgrounds, the amount of veneering porcelain thickness needed for the shade match might be beyond acceptable clinical limits. Tooth-shaded backgrounds are esthetically advocated rather than dark-shaded backgrounds in zirconia-based restorations.

Effect of abutment shade, ceramic thickness, and coping type on the final shade of zirconia all-ceramic restorations: in vitro study of color masking ability

Abstract:PURPOSE: The aim of the study was to evaluate the effect of abutment shade, ceramic thickness, and coping type on the final shade of zirconia all-ceramic restorations.MATERIALS AND METHODS: Three different types of disk-shaped zirconia coping specimens (Lava, Cercon, Zirkonzahn: ø10 mm × 0.4 mm) were fabricated and veneered with IPS e.max Press Ceram (shade A2), for total thicknesses of 1 and 1.5 mm. A total of sixty zirconia restoration specimens were divided into six groups based on their coping types and thicknesses. The abutment specimens (ø10 mm × 7 mm) were prepared with gold alloy, base metal (nickel-chromium) alloy, and four different shades (A1, A2, A3, A4) of composite resins. The average L*, a*, b* values of the zirconia specimens on the six abutment specimens were measured with a dental colorimeter, and the statistical significance in the effects of three variables was analyzed by using repeated measures analysis of variance (α=.05).The average shade difference (ΔE) values of the zirconia specimens between the A2 composite resin abutment and other abutments were also evaluated.RESULTS: The effects of zirconia specimen thickness (P<.001), abutment shade (P<.001), and type of zirconia copings (P<.003) on the final shade of the zirconia restorations were significant. The average ΔE value of Lava specimens (1 mm) between the A2 composite resin and gold alloy abutments was higher (close to the acceptability threshold of 5.5 ΔE) than th ose between the A2 composite resin and other abutments.CONCLUSION: This in-vitro study demonstrated that abutment shade, ceramic thickness, and coping type affected the resulting shade of zirconia restorations.

Abstract:As part of a medicinal chemistry program aimed at developing a highly potent and selective cathepsin C inhibitor, tritium, carbon-14, and stable isotope-labeled materials were required. The synthesis of tritium-labeled methanesulfonate 5 was achieved via catalytic tritiolysis of a chloro precursor, albeit at a low radiochemical purity of 67%. Tritium-labeled AZD5248 was prepared via a 3-stage synthesis, utilizing amide-directed hydrogen isotope exchange. Carbon-14 and stable isotope-labeled AZD5248 were successfully prepared through modifications of the medicinal chemistry synthetic route, enabling the use of available labeled intermediates.
Research on shade selection of 510 upper incisor cases of metal ceramic restorations

Abstract:Objective To investigate shade selection of 510 upper incisor cases of metal ceramic restorations.Methods Shade selections of metal ceramic restorations were collected and put in order.The case number of Nickel-chromium alloy,Cobalt-chromium alloy and Au-alloy ceramometal restorations was recorded respectively.In addition,the case number of shade grade,percentage,value,hue and chroma was counted.Results 359 cases of central incisor and 151 cases of lateral incisor were included in 510 cases.Nickel-chromium alloy,Cobalt-chromium alloy and Au-alloy ceramometal restorations were 229 cases,206 cases and 75 cases,respectively.Study of shade selection indicated that 2M2(92 cases,18%),3M1(62 cases,12%) and 2M1(54 cases,11%) were the most selected shade grade.In frequency analysis of shade chromatology,grade 2 in value had the most frequency(277),grade M in hue 311,and grade light in chroma 291.Conclusion Shade of metal ceramic restorations selected by most patients in Hangzhou area in this study took on higher value,light chroma and medium hue as characteristics.
Effects of dentin and enamel porcelain layer thickness on the color of various ceramic restorations

Abstract:Objective: To investigate the effects of dentin and enamel porcelain layer thickness on the color of various ceramic restorations. Materials and methods: Eighty specimens (shade A2 and A3, n = 10) (20 mm in length, 4 mm in width, 1.5 mm in thickness respectively) of casting ceramic (EM); alumina ceramic (AL); zirconia ceramic (ZR); and porcelain-fused-metal (PFM) were prepared. The color distributions of each specimen were measured at 4 places using a spectroradiometer. The dentin/enamel porcelain (D/E) layer thicknesses of the 4 places were 0.8/0.2 mm, 0.6/0.4 mm, 0.4/0.6 mm, and 0.2/0.8 mm. The color differences (ΔE00 ) between the specimens and the corresponding color shade tabs were calculated. Data were analyzed using three-way repeated-measures ANOVA and Holm-Sidak pairwise comparisons (a = 0.05). The acceptability threshold (AT) was used to analyze the results. Results: The minimum ΔE00 values were 1.31 (0.6/0.4 mm for EM), 1.41 (0.8/0.2 mm for AL), and 1.92 (0.2/0.8 mm for ZR) for shade A2, and 0.93 (0.6/0.4 mm for EM), 0.89 (0.8/0.2 mm for AL), and 1.34 (0.8/0.2 mm for ZR) for shade A3. Most of them were below AT value (1.8). For AL and ZR (shade A2) and ZR (shade A3), the D/E layer thicknesses of 0.8/0.2 mm and 0.6/0.4 mm had lower ΔE00 values than 0.4/0.6 mm and 0.2/0.8 mm (p ≤ 0.001). Conclusions: The dentin/enamel porcelain layer thickness that was most color-matched to the shade tab was different for various ceramic restorations. The color of shade A2 AL and ZR and shade A3 ZR was closer to the shade tab when dentin porcelain was thicker than enamel porcelain. Clinical significance: Matching the shade of ceramic restoration to the shade tab color is a great challenge in esthetic dentistry. The dentin/enamel porcelain layer thickness is an important factor to influence the improved color matching.

Abstract:Purpose: To evaluate the influence of abutment material, cement thickness, and crown type on the esthetics of implant supported restorations. Material and methods: In total, 60 specimens were prepared to represent six abutment groups: Group PA = pink-anodized Ti; Group GA = gold-anodized Ti; Group T = nonanodized Ti; Group H = hybrid (Ti + zirconia); Group P = PEEK (Ti + PEEK); and Group C = composite resin (control). Crown specimens (n = 120) were obtained from Vita Enamic (VE) and Vita Suprinity (VS). Two cement thicknesses (0.1 and 0.2 mm) were used. The color values of crown configura:ons were measured and ΔE00* values were calculated. Statistical analyses included were Shapiro Wilk, three-way ANOVA, and Tukey HSD tests (P ≤ .05). Results: Abutment (P < .001) and crown materials (P = .001) had a significant effect on ΔE00* values, while cement thickness did not. Groups PA and H resulted in significantly lower mean ΔE00* values than other abutments, whereas Group T revealed the highest. Unlike VS, cement thicknesses created a significant difference on the ΔE00* values for VE (P ≤.05). Conclusions: Pink-anodized Ti or hybrid abutments for VE and pink- or goldanodized Ti for VS seem to be better options, in terms of color change. Cement thickness of 0.1 mm resulted in higher ΔE00* value than 0.2 mm for VE (P ≤ .05).

Abstract:With increasing aesthetic awareness and emphasis on time costs in today's society, monolithic multilayer precolored zirconia ceramics (M-Zr) facilitate aesthetic restorations in a convenient and straightforward manner without the need for veneering porcelain to modify the color. However, the effect of abutment materials on the final color of M-Zr remains unclear. Herein, we placed Vita A1 Shade M-Zr on six different abutment materials, zirconia (Y-TZP), 3D printed composite resin (CR), dental model resin (MR), polyetheretherketone (PEEK), polyetherketoneketone (PEKK), and cobalt–chromium alloy (Co–Cr), to evaluate their effect on the color accuracy of M-Zr. The color attributes (L*, a*, and b*) were measured using a dental spectrophotometer. The translucency parameter (TP), contrast ratio, color difference (ΔE) between each background substrate and the Vita A1 Shade Guide, and chroma values (C) were calculated to evaluate the color accuracy of M-Zr. A statistical analysis was performed using one-way analysis of variance and post hoc Tukey's HSD tests (α = 0.05). The experimental results indicate that the TP values and contrast ratio of the M-Zr samples were 14.85 and 0.83, respectively. Co–Cr had the highest ΔE (6.08) and lowest C value (7.52); PEKK had the lowest ΔE (2.60), and PEEK had the highest C value (12.23) (p < 0.05). Notably, the ΔE values of CR (3.13), PEEK (2.86), and PEKK were within clinical indicators (ΔE < 3.7). Based on these results, it can be concluded that the abutment material has a significant effect on the final color of the M-Zr, and PEEK or PEKK resulted in good color accuracy. When choosing the dental MR, traditional zirconia, or metals as abutment materials, colored or opaque cement might be required to eliminate color distortion and achieve desirable optical properties.

Abstract:STATEMENT OF PROBLEM:Achieving excellent esthetics with monolithic self-glazed zirconia crowns in anterior teeth is challenging, and the impact of different surface treatments and abutment shades on the final color is unclear. PURPOSE:The purpose of this in vitro study was to evaluate the effects of different external surface treatments (self-glazed, milled, polished, and glazed), different intaglio surface treatments (milled and airborne-particle abraded), and different abutment shades on the color difference of high-translucency self-glazed zirconia crowns. MATERIAL AND METHODS:Sixty shade A1 and 60 shade A3 crowns were fabricated with a thickness of 0.80 ±0.02 mm and randomly divided into 12 groups (n=10). Different external and intaglio surface treatments were applied. Shade A1 and A3 abutments were made with composite resin. Color was measured with a spectrophotometer and expressed in CIELab coordinates, and color differences (ΔE00) between specimens and references were calculated. The data were analyzed with ANOVA and the Tukey post hoc test. The impact of different surface treatments and abutment shades on the color difference were compared by using multiple linear regression (α=.05). RESULTS:The effects of external surface treatments, intaglio airborne-particle abrasion, and abutment shades on the L∗, a∗, b∗ and ΔE00 values of the final color of the crowns were significantly different (P<.001). Polishing resulted in the greatest ΔE00 value among all external surface treatments (P<.001). The average ΔE00 values of all crowns on the A3 abutment were higher than those of all crowns on the A1 abutment (P<.001). The influence on the color difference was abutment>external surface treatment>intaglio surface treatment. CONCLUSIONS:Different surface treatments affected the final color of zirconia crowns, and a greater impact was seen with external surface treatments than with intaglio surface treatments. External polishing resulted in the greatest color difference. The abutment shade had the most effect on the color difference, as the darker the abutment color, the greater the color difference.
The effect of ceramic thickness and resin cement shades on the color matching of ceramic veneers in discolored teeth

Abstract:The objective of this study was to analyze the effects of ceramic material thickness and resin cement shade on the color matching of ceramic veneers at the gray tooth structures. Seventy-two artificial maxillary right central incisor teeth (C2 shade) were prepared according to veneer tooth preparation in practice. Ceramic materials (LT, A2 shade, IPS e.max Press) were selected to fabricate the 0.50- and 0.75-mm thick veneers at the body region. The ceramic veneer specimens were bonded to the artificial teeth by the 6 shades of resin cements (Variolink Veneer: shades of HV+3, LV-2, LV-3; and RelyXTM Veneer: shades of WO, TR, A3). A clinical spectrophotometer (Crystaleye, Olympus) was used to measure the color parameters. The color differences (ΔE values) of ceramic veneers and A2 shade tab (Vitapan Classical, Vita) and C*abvalues were calculated. The results of three-way ANOVA indicated that the ΔE values of ceramic veneer and A2 shade tab were significantly different in the thickness of ceramic materials, shades of resin cements, and measuring regions (p < 0.001). There were significant differences in 0.50-mm-thick ceramic veneers that exhibited higher ΔE values compared with veneers that were 0.75-mm thick. Tukey’s HSD test showed that the average ΔE values in body region were significantly smaller than that in cervical and incisal regions. The color matching of ceramic veneers was significantly influenced not only by the ceramic thickness and the resin cement shades but also the tooth regions.

Color match of a feldspathic ceramic CAD-CAM material for ultrathin laminate veneers as a function of substrate shade, restoration color, and thickness

Abstract:Statement of problem: The final color of a ceramic restoration, especially an ultrathin veneer, is important, but selecting the correct shade is difficult because the substrate can affect the final color of the restoration. Purpose: The purpose of this in vitro study was to investigate the effect of substrate shade and thickness on the final color of ultrathin laminate veneers milled from feldspathic ceramic and to present a straightforward methodology with which a clinician can visualize the effects of substrate color, ceramic thickness, and prefabricated computer-aided design and computer-aided manufacturing (CAD-CAM) block color on the final color of the restoration. Material and methods: All specimens were fabricated by slicing CAD-CAM feldspathic ceramic material with a precision cutter into 12×10-mm slices of approximately 0.35, 0.55, 0.75, and 1.55 mm in thickness with 10 different colors (0M1-1M1-1M2-2M1-2M2-2M3-3M1-3M2-3M3-4M1). As a background substrate, composite resin disks (12×10×2 mm) were fabricated with different shades (0M1 S, 1M1 S, 2M3 S, 3M2 S, 4M3 S, 5M3 S). The CIELab values of the polished surfaces of each specimen were measured on a background (white or simulated foundation) with a spectrophotometer by a single experienced operator, and color differences (ΔE) were calculated. Mean ±SD values were calculated and subjected to ANOVA with 2 variables (substrate and ceramic color) (α=.05). Results: Combinations of a lighter substrate shade and a lighter value ceramic restoration and of a darker substrate shade and darker value ceramic restoration only changed the final color of the restoration minimally. Conclusions: The final color of a dental restoration is affected by the thickness of the restoration, the substrate color, and the ceramic color. Lighter and darker substrate colors show more color changes, and thin veneers cannot mask the substrate color.
Evaluation of shade correspondence between high-translucency pre-colored zirconia and shade tab by considering the influence of cement shade and substrate materials

Abstract:Statement of problem: The relation between cement color and abutment substrate material and the corresponding effect on the color accuracy of high-transparency pre-colored zirconia (HT-Zr) remains unclear. Purpose: This in-vitro study aimed to investigate the difference in color accuracy when the HT-Zr is bonded to different materials-based substrates with differently colored resin cement. Materials and methods: Vita A1 shade HT-Zr with 1 mm thickness was used as the testing sample. The samples were first placed on zirconia (ZR), tooth color resin (CR), and metallic (MT) abutment substrates. Subsequently, four differently colored cements (translucent (TR), bleach, opaque, and A2 shade (A2)) were used for bonding HT-Zr onto the substrate, and the non-bonded group was used as the control group (CG). There were 15 groups in total (n = 10 per group). A digital colorimeter was used to obtain Commission Internationale de l'Eclairage (CIELab) color parameters. The translucency parameter (TP00) of the substrate and sample, as well as color difference (ΔE00) and chroma (C) between the different groups were calculated. Additionally, the ΔE00 and TP00 were compared with the moderately unacceptable match of ΔE00 = 3.6. The statistical analysis was conducted using ANOVA and Tukey HSD post-hoc test (α = 0.05). Results: HT-Zr exhibited high translucency (TP00 = 11.02 ± 0.18), and the mean ΔE00 of the testing samples ranged between 2.18 ± 0.20 and 13.14 ± 0.31. The ZR-CG and MT-A2 groups showed the highest and lowest lightness separately. The CR-CG group exhibited the highest C, and the ΔE00 was lower than that of 3.6. The MT-TR group showed the lowest C and the highest ΔE00. The inter-group comparison revealed that the ΔE00 for different cement is mostly lower than the acceptable color match of 1.0; moreover, the ΔE00 for all the substrates, excluding the CG group, is higher than 3.6. Conclusions: The abutment substrate materials and the cement color should be considered with caution when using HT-Zr, with the effect of abutment substrate materials being more apparent in color accuracy. HT-Zr restorations are not recommended for discolored or bleached abutments but only for natural-colored abutments to achieve the optimal color appearance.
Identification of a tumor-associated antigen in cervical carcinoma by two dimensional (crossed) immunoelectrophoresis.

Abstract:Two-dimensional immunoelectrophoresis was used to evaluate 8 cervical cancer speciments, 11 other gynecologic tumors, and 5 specimens of normal cervix. Antigens were water-soluble tissue extracts and antisera prepared in rabbits. When tested against antisera to cervical cancer, cancer antigens showed 14-17 precipitin lines whereas normal cervix showed 10-16. A single heavy heterogeneous precipitin line with an electrophoretic mobility of 0.58 relative to bovine albumin was observed in all cervical cancer specimens but not in normal cervical or other tumor specimens. Further evidence for the uniqueness of this antigen was sought by enhancement (addition of another antigen to the first phase of electrophoresis which increased the size of common peaks) and suppression (addition of another antiserum to the second phase, whereby the peak size of components to which both sera have antibody was decreased). The specific precipitin line was neither suppressed by the addition of antisera to normal tissue nor enhanced when normal tissue antigen was added to the tumor antigen preparation. More conclusively, adsorption of the tumor antiserum with normal tissue had no effect on the unique tumor-associated precipitin line, whereas all other precipitin lines were removed. This antigen was common to other cervical tumors because enhancement was demonstrated with three other cervical tumor specimens. The identification of a distinct and separate antigen associated with cervical carcinoma will permit further characterization and possible development of immunodiagnostic methods.
Evaluation of the Color of Zirconia in Different Substrates of Osseointegrated Implants, Thickness of Materials and Types of Resin Cements

Abstract:Objectives: To evaluate the impact of surface conditioning of titanium, zirconia thickness, and cement type on the final color of zirconia luted to the titanium. Methods: A total of 192 grade 5 titanium specimens with the final dimensions 10 mm × 10 mm × 2 mm were fabricated and subjected to four different surface conditioning including, that is, sandblasting, etching, and anodization. In addition, 192 zirconia specimens with the same dimensions as the titanium specimens but altered thicknesses of 0.7 (n = 96) and 1.0 (n = 96) mm were fabricated using 5Y-TZP zirconia. Color as expressed by L ∗ (lightness), a ∗ (red-green axis), and b ∗ (blue-yellow axis) of titanium and zirconia specimens as well as the joined titanium-zirconia complex, total assembly (Panavia V5 clear, PC; opaque, PO, each n = 96) were determined under standardized conditions using a spectroradiometer (SpectraScan P-650). Color differences were calculated using the ΔE 00 formula. ANOVA supplemented with post hoc Tukey test for group comparisons was compiled to estimate possible effects of titanium conditioning, zirconia thickness, and type of cement used on the final zirconia color (SPSS Ver. 28; α = 0.05). Results: All investigated factors affected the zirconia color of the total assembly (p < 0.001). Using PO mean values of all groups were still close to baseline colors (ΔE 00 between 5.5 and 6.2). When using PC, the final color was significantly altered, irrespective of the other parameters. Specimens luted with PO appeared lighter, less reddish (a ∗ was affected predominately by sample thickness), and more bluish, while luting with PC resulted in reduced lightness combined with large shifts along the red and yellow axes. Significance: Color changes of zirconia luted to titanium are primarily affected by the color of the substrate if a translucent cement was used. Vice versa, the application of an opaque cement effectively masked the dark substrate color. Substrate color and choice of cement have to be taken into consideration when performing shade selection.
Clinicopathological characteristics of interstitial foam cells in membranous nephropathy.

Abstract:BACKGROUND Interstitial foam cells are occasionally observed in various renal diseases, and they have been reported to belong to the monocyte/macrophage (M phi) lineage and to be associated with heavy proteinuria and hyperlipidemia. We investigated the characteristics of interstitial foam cells and their association with proteinuria and hyperlipidemia in idiopathic membranous nephropathy (MN). METHODS Patients with MN (N = 320) were divided into two groups: group I consisted of 51 patients with interstitial foam cells, and group II consisted of the other 269 without foam cells. We compared clinical parameters and the findings of an immunohistochemical study using monoclonal antibodies to various types of leukocytes and adhesion molecules. RESULTS The age at renal biopsy, the degree of proteinuria, serum levels of lipids, and other clinical parameters except for sex ratio were not different between the two groups. The ratio of nephrotic patients was compatible between groups I (56.9%) and II (52.8%). All interstitial foam cells were positive for CD68 and 25F9, which are markers for M phi and mature M phi, respectively, but were negative for CD3 or cytokeratin. Interstitial infiltrating cells were positive for CD68 and CD3 but were negative for 25F9. Furthermore, most of interstitial foam cells were positive for both leukocyte function associated antigen-1 (LFA-1) and intercellular adhesion molecule-1 (ICAM-1), but not for ICAM-3 (the third ligand for LFA-1). By contrast, most of infiltrating nonfoamy M phi s were positive for ICAM-3 and LFA-1, however, ICAM-1 was observed on only some of them. CONCLUSION These results suggest that interstitial foam cells in MN may not depend on proteinuria nor hyperlipidemia directly. The accumulation of foam cells, which have characteristics of mature M phi, may be related to ICAM-1 as a ligand of LFA-1, whereas infiltration of nonfoamy M phi s has a close relationship with ICAM-3. Thus, the formation of interstitial foam cells may be related to the phenotypical transformation of M phi s.
Influence of core color on final shade reproduction of zirconia crown in single central incisor situation – An in vivo study

Abstract:BACKGROUND: A lot of shaded zirconia blocks are being introduced into the market. Their effect on the final shade of the restoration is yet uncertain.MATERIAL AND METHODS: Twenty-four zirconia crowns were fabricated for 8 patients who needed to restore a single maxillary central incisor, and divided into 3 groups according to the color and type of the zirconia (Zr) used (white Zr core, colored Zr core, and monolithic high translucency (ht) Zr crowns). Using Easyshade spectrophotometer, delta E color difference was calculated between fabricated crown and adjacent tooth. The ΔEs obtained were assessed based on 1.6 ΔE which represented the color difference that could not be detected by the human eye and considered clinically acceptable.RESULTS: No statistically significant values were found between the 3 groups related to different Zr color and type.CONCLUSIONS: Within the limitations of this study, it could be concluded that the shade of the zirconia blank had no significant effect on the final color of the crown. This raises reasonable doubt about the necessity to use colored zirconia blanks or use of dip-in solutions. The clinical implications were that, there was no need to use colored zirconia cores to get more esthetically pleasing restorations with respect to color perception. The use of monolithic high translucent zirconia crowns gained the advantages of high translucency and color reproduction. <b>Key words:</b>Zirconia, easyshade, monolithic, spectrophotometer, delta E.
High resolution MR imaging of the bilateral hips with dual phased‐array coil

Abstract:We applied dual‐flex coils in a phased‐array configuration to obtain high resolution MR images of the bilateral hips and compared the image quality with non‐phased‐array imaging. Multiple fast spin‐echo images of both hips were obtained in a single acquisition. Two consecutive acquisitions with and without phased‐array capability were performed in 22 hips and a fluid‐filled phantom. The signal‐to‐noise ratio (S/N) enhancement values were calculated. Subjective image analysis was also obtained from three independent reviewers. High quality MR images were obtained using dual‐array coils with a S/N enhancement value of 1.40 for a phantom and 1.83 to 2.22 for subject hips. On subjective analysis, the dual array enhanced delineation of the acetabular labrum, articular cartilage, and retained fluid. The dual array may be of diagnostic value with a higher S/N enhancement and subjective superiority of the images obtained.

Abstract:The amastigote form of Leishmania mexicana parasites colonizes macrophage phagolysosomes and induces the enlargement of these compartments to form huge parasitophorous vacuoles. We report here that a purified secreted amastigote product, proteophosphoglycan, is a macromolecule which causes vacuolization of peritoneal macrophages in vitro. Secretion of this glycoconjugate by intracellular parasites may contribute to the expansion of phagolysosomal compartments in infected cells.

Abstract:Statement of problem The application of highly translucent multilayered zirconia ceramic in minimally invasive esthetic dentistry allows the achievement of both esthetics and strength with minimal thickness. Clinical studies that have assessed the performance of zirconia ultrathin veneers sintered with the conventional and speed procedure are lacking. Purpose The purpose of this clinical study was to evaluate the effect of speed sintering processes on the translucency and clinical performance of zirconia laminate veneers. Material and methods Four participants had their teeth restored with 32 ultratranslucent zirconia laminate veneers. Based on the zirconia sintering procedure, the participants were randomly allocated into 2 groups. The teeth were prepared by selective reduction over trial restorations. Zirconia veneers were milled from multilayer zirconia blanks and sintered either by speed sintering or conventional sintering as specified by the manufacturer's recommendations. The intaglio surface of the veneers were airborne-particle abraded with 50-μm aluminum-oxide, and the veneers were then adhesively bonded to the teeth with translucent light-polymerizing resin cement. The modified California Dental Association (CDA)/Ryge criteria were used to assess participants at baseline and every 3 months for 12 months. The translucency and the color difference of the tooth before and after veneer restoration were evaluated. For statistical analysis, the Pearson chi squared test, independent t test, and paired t test were used (α=.05). Results Translucency and color differences were significantly higher in the conventionally sintered group ( P <.05). No restorations were lost. No significant differences were found between the 2 groups in the CDA/Ryge criteria or color parameter after follow-up intervals ( P >.05). The primary qualitative changes observed at the final recall were marginal integrity and marginal discoloration. The color match and zirconia surface were rated Alfa. Conclusions After 1 year of follow-up, both conventional and speed sintered ultrathin zirconia laminates showed satisfactory functional, esthetic, and color stability outcomes.

In Vitro Comparison of Optical Properties Between Single-Shade and Conventional Composite Resin Restorations

Abstract:Introduction: The recently developed single-shade composite resin (using the concept of structural coloring) is a promising option to eliminate the process and subjectivity of shade selection. However, current evidence of its performance is still insufficient. This study aimed to evaluate the color matching, color stability, and refractive index (RI) of single-shade restorations compared with conventional composite resin. Methods: This in vitro study was conducted on 48 extracted maxillary premolars. The teeth were sorted into three tooth shade groups (B2, A3, and A3.5). Each group included two subgroups based on the materials used: Omnichroma (OM; Tokuyama Dental, Tokyo, Japan) and Filtek Z350 (FT; 3M ESPE, St. Paul, MN, USA). Buccal and lingual Class V round cavities were prepared and restored according to the randomly assigned subgroups, with the test single-shade material (OM) on one surface and the matching conventional control material (FT) of the proper shade on the other surface of each tooth. Color matching was evaluated by visual assessment and a spectrophotometer. All specimens were distributed into four staining groups and immersed in various staining beverages (black coffee, Arabic coffee, Coca-Cola, and distilled water) for four weeks. Color changes were assessed using a spectrophotometer. Four groups of disc-shaped specimens (single-shade, B2, A3, and A3.5) were fabricated to evaluate the RI using a refractometer. Statistical analyses were performed to compare the materials. Results: The mean value of the color difference (ΔE) of single-shade restorations was significantly higher than that of paired conventional restorations in all shade groups. The highest mean ΔE was in subgroup A3.5-OM (8.84 ± 2.39) and showed significantly less color matching than other OM subgroups (p=0.009). The visual assessment showed comparable and acceptable color matching in all subgroups except A3.5-OM (p=0.006). There was a significant color change after the staining test within and across staining groups, but the color change was comparable between the OM and FT subgroups. The RI of single-shade material was significantly higher than conventional material (p<0.05). Conclusion: The color matching of single-shade restorations was affected by tooth shade. Its color stability was influenced by various staining substances but was similar to conventional restorations.
