Abstract:The materials and practices of chymical procedures have become key sources of information among science historians, opening up channels for cross-disciplinary dialogue. This is especially true with regard to material culture-based disciplines such as archaeology whose bottom-up approach offers significant contributions to the new historiography of science. Parallel to this trend, some archaeological scientists who specialise in reconstructing past technologies have begun to address questions concerning the production and circulation of scientific knowledge, and have focused as well on the contributions of artists/artisans to the development of natural philosophical theories. This essay charts the history of this archaeology of alchemy and chemistry and its development as a sub-discipline of archaeological science. By mapping this history, from an initial period with a focus on metallurgy to current trends, it demonstrates how the archaeology of alchemy and chemistry both mirrors and, at the same time, feeds the broadening scope of the historiography of science. After surveying the most relevant works and highlighting the key contributions that archaeologists have brought to a discourse related to the creation of scientific knowledge, the essay also offers a series of ideas related to materials awaiting comprehensive study that will further strengthen methodological synergies across disciplines.

Abstract:The presence of xenobiotic-inducible CYP1A1, 2B1/2, and 3A1/2 in rat lung mitochondria was investigated using mitochondrial preparations of defined purity. The mitochondrial P450 content in uninduced lung was 1.5-fold higher compared to microsomes. Administration of BNF induced the P450 contents by twofold in both mitochondrial and microsomal membrane fractions. BNF treatment induced EROD activity to about 40-fold in the microsomal fraction and 25-fold in the mitochondrial fraction. The microsomal induction was observed at 4 days of BNF treatment, while the mitochondrial induction required 10 days of treatment. Consistent with the activity profile, Western blot analysis showed the presence of CYP1A1 antibody reactive protein only in lung mitochondria from BNF-treated rats. BNF administration also caused a 50 to 80% reduction in the CYP2B1/2-associated PROD and BROD activities and CYP3A1/2-associated ERND activity in both mitochondria and microsomes. There was also a parallel reduction in the antibody reactive CYP2B1/2 and 3A1/2 proteins in both of these membrane fractions. Administration of DEX for 4 days induced mitochondrial and microsomal ERND activity by 1. 7- and 2.5-fold, respectively. Mitochondrial EROD activity was inhibited by antibodies to P450MT2, as well as Adx, but not by antibody against P450 reductase, indicating the mitochondrial localization of CYP1A1. Protease protection and alkaline extraction experiments indicated that CYP1A1 associated with lung mitochondria is localized inside the inner membrane and exists as a membrane extrinsic protein. In summary, this is probably the first report of inducible P450s in rat lung mitochondria, and our results suggest a possible functional role for these mitochondrial enzymes in xenobiotic metabolism.

Abstract:17th century chemistry was concerned largely with iatrochemistry (medicinal chemistry) and the transmutation of metals, especially with the purpose of making gold. Thus, Johann Rudolph Glauber made a living making and selling chemicals such as nitric acid and medicaments such as aurum potabile (drinkable gold), but he also believed in the transmutation or "improvement" of metals and the "augmentation" of gold, and he sold recipes for such processes. This perspective aims to provide a snapshot of the range of 17th century chemistry by analysis of the efforts of four representatives to make drugs, chemicals, and gold. It will be concluded that early modern chemists were unable to break out from the conceptual doctrines imposed by Aristotle and Paracelsus, which made transmutation perfectly logical. No further scientific advance could be made until the idea that all things are composed of the same basic constituents was abandoned in favour of the atomic theory.
Alchemy, Chinese versus Greek, an etymological approach: a rejoinder

Abstract:The theory generally accepted maintains that Alchemy arose at Alexandria as a child of Greek culture. It has two names, Chemeia as the earlier and Chumeia as the later. There is another theory that Alchemy arose in China. Its founder was the aged ascetic who longed after drugs of longevity. He first tried jade, next gold and cinnabar, but the ideal was a drug which was red like cinnabar and fire-proof like gold. But what was actually prepared was red colloidal gold or "calcined gold," by grinding gold granules in a decoction of an herb of longevity. It was called Chin-I; Chin = gold and I = plant juice. In Fukin dialect Chin-I = Kim-Iya. This was Arabicized, by pre-Islamic Arabs trading in silk with China, as Kimiya, whence arose Al-Kimiya and finally Al-chemy. It was first accepted by Bucharic speaking Copts in Egypt who transliterated Kimiya = Chemeia, pronouncing it as the Arabs did. With the increase of trade in silk the Chinese also went to Alexandria and helped the Greeks to translate Chin-I as Chrusozomion meaning, gold (making) ferment, instead of gold making plant juice. Consistent with this origin of the word Chemeia is the fact that the earlier Alchemists were not Greeks but probably Bucharic speaks Copts or Egyptians. The consumer of Chin-I or Chemeia became "a drug-made immortal" called Chin-Jen, Golden-Man. This was translated into Greek as Chrusanthropos. Thus the etymoloogy of two Greek words Chrusozomion and Chrusanthropos support the origin of the loan word, Chemeia as Chinese. To save space it is not proposed to discuss the origin of Chumeia.

Abstract:Premodern medicine used a variety of mineral substances for therapeutic purposes. The present article deals with pitch-asphalt, and, in particular, a precious kind of it called mūmiyā' originating in Persia. It was first described in detail in the Arabic pharmacological tradition, and its fame spread throughout the medieval Mediterranean, including Byzantium. By editing and examining for the first time a previously unexplored medieval Greek text on mūmiyā', this study offers new insights into the medicinal uses of this substance. It also significantly increases our understanding of the intense cross-cultural transfer of medical knowledge from the Islamicate world to Byzantium by showing that this was not merely based on the translation of a few Arabic medical works into Greek, but was a multifaceted phenomenon involving a complex nexus of sources that require further investigation.
Reframing Chemical Thinking Through the Lens of Disciplinary Essential Questions and Perspectives for Teaching and Learning Chemistry

Abstract:Chemical thinking has been widely recognized as a core competence for supporting students' problem solving in chemistry education. Disciplinary essential questions and perspectives are two critical aspects of chemical thinking. This study connects essential questions with such perspectives to develop a new framework for restructuring chemical thinking. A mixed-method approach was employed to integrate both qualitative and quantitative evidences to support the validity of this framework. Qualitative analysis of semistructured interviews with six chemists was conducted to identify critical perspectives on three disciplinary essential questions. The framework was reviewed by an expert panel to confirm the content validity and evaluated by thirty-one experts and 80 secondary school chemistry teachers in the form of a survey to ensure face validity. This study found that experts and teachers exhibited a consensus regarding their perceptions of chemical thinking in the context of the framework. Based on this qualitative and quantitative evidence, this study constructed a framework of chemical thinking that includes three disciplinary essential questions and 12 domain-specific perspectives that can provide researchers and teachers with a new lens through which they can both study and teach chemical thinking.

Abstract:Daniel Sennert (1572–1637) of Wittenberg is known as one of the earliest university professors of medicine, who advanced the study of "chymistry" (alchemy/chemistry) through his influential writings. This article first explores his treatise On the Agreement and Disagreement of the Chymists with the Aristotelians and Galenists (Wittenberg, 1619) so as to understand his view of chymistry in its detailed historical and intellectual context. Following that is a brief analysis of some theological aspects of the polemic in which Sennert was involved. While criticising the Paracelsians, Sennert adopted their idea of the three principles (Salt, Sulphur and Mercury) and placed their origin in the divine act of Creation. It is exactly for this reason that Johannes Freitag (1581–1641) of Groningen and his students tried to associate Sennert with the Paracelsians and denounced them as heretics. The interpretation of the Biblical Creation story occupied an important place in this polemic. Among Freitag's students, Jacobus Homodaeus (1612–1693) of Elbing excelled for his unusually wide knowledge of theological sources not only Christian (both Catholic and Protestant) but also Jewish.

Abstract:In this paper, the practice of chemistry is viewed in terms of the interaction of three elements – the physical world (at the molecular level), the conceptual world (the canon of chemistry) and the social world (the community of chemists). This interaction, which is based on critical realist ideas such as, for example, the transitive and intransitive dimensions of reality, affords a clear distinction between the practice of chemistry as science and the practice of chemistry as technology. It also shows the significance of the particularity of the chemist in the practice of chemistry. Finally, it allows a coherent philosophical foundation for chemistry research and chemistry education.
A Technical Examination of the Corrosion and Microstructural Features of Copper Alloy Artifacts from the Byzantine Period at Khirbet Yajuz, Jordan

Abstract:This study investigated the corrosion and microstructural characteristics of a group of copper alloy artifacts dating to the Byzantine period at the Khirbet Yajuz archaeological site, Jordan. Scanning electron microscopy coupled with energy-dispersive x-ray spectroscopy (SEM–EDX) analyses revealed that those artifacts were mainly of ternary Cu–Sn–Pb and quaternary Cu–Sn–Zn–Pb alloys. The x-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis of representative corrosion product samples revealed the presence of cuprite (Cu 2 O), tenorite (CuO), atacamite/paratacamite ( α – and γ –Cu 2 (OH) 3 Cl), sampleite (NaCaCu 5 (PO 4 ) 4 Cl·5H 2 O), and aurichalcite ((Cu, Zn) 5 (CO 3 ) 2 (OH) 6 ). A few corrosion products of the copper alloying elements were also detected such as cassiterite (SnO 2 ), pyromorphite (Pb 5 (PO 4 ) 3 Cl), smithsonite (ZnCO 3 ), and spencerite (Zn 4 (PO 4 ) 2 (OH) 2 ·3H 2 O). The metallographic examination revealed the microstructural characteristics of the internal alloy, which helped to clarify the casting characteristics or degrees of working and heat treatment in the manufacture of the artifacts. The microhardness testing results were consistent with composition and manufacturing techniques of the artifacts. The presence of stable oxide and phosphate corrosion products of copper and its alloying elements improved the stability of the artifacts and reduced the risk of activating the cuprous chlorides (CuCl) present in the internal corrosion pits. The artifacts could be conserved by a direct conservation treatment using either corrosion inhibitors or potentiostatic reduction methods or in a passive way by controlling the relative humidity to a stable value below 40%, with continuous monitoring of the environmental conditions at the storage area to maintain the stability of the artifacts.

Abstract:Abstract With the rise of the Swiss-born alchemist Paracelsus in the 16th century, the dissolution of cinnabar (red HgS) in aqua regia has repeatedly appeared in the chemical literature. This article reviews the relevant history and takes a thermodynamic approach to shed new light on the dissolution. The conclusions reveal that the reaction in which the sulfide ion is oxidized by nitric acid is the most thermodynamically favorable step in the dissolution. The importance of the role of hydrochloric acid in the dissolution, when it provides complexation, was also observed. Further, it was found that the overall effect of nitric acid is much greater than that of the aqua regia by-product elemental chlorine.

Abstract:Abstract.This paper examines selected leitmotifs from the Arabic classical traditions in the history of the exact sciences while taking into account their adaptive assimilation and expansion of ancient Greek scientific knowledge within the pre-modern Islamicate intellectual milieu, and the subsequent transmission and reception of the Greco-Arabic sciences within the European mediaeval and Renaissance circles of scholarship. To give a more concrete focus to this thematic orientation I will address the legacy in the science of optics of the 11th century Arab polymath al-Hasan Ibn al-Haytham (known in Latin renditions of his name as Alhazen; died ca. 1041 CE), as encompassed primarily in his Kitāb al-manāzir (Book of Optics, De aspectibus or Perspectiva). This opus contained his explications of the nature and comportment of light and direct vision, including studies in catoptrics and dioptrics (respectively, the optical sciences that investigate the mathematical and physical principles of the reflection and refraction of light, along with their associated scientific instruments). This inquiry is situated within the wider epistemic setting of Ibn al-Haytham’s scientific experimental method of controlled testing that is underpinned by an isomorphic composition of geometric modelling with physics in studying natural phenomena.

Abstract:Phosphorylation of translation initiation factor 2 alpha is a highly conserved mechanism for down-regulating protein synthesis in response to starvation or stress. The yeast eIF-2 alpha kinase GCN2 is stimulated by deprivation for amino acids or purines. In addition to inhibiting general protein synthesis, GCN2 specifically stimulates translation of GCN4, a transcriptional activator of amino acid biosynthetic genes. HRI is an eIF-2 alpha kinase that is activated in rabbit reticulocytes by heme-deprivation and stress conditions that elicit the heat-shock response. The eIF-2 alpha kinase DAI is activated by double-stranded RNA during viral infections and is an important component of the interferon response. DAI has also been implicated as a tumor suppressor. These protein kinases provide an important means of coupling the rate of protein synthesis and cell division to environmental conditions.

Abstract:Synthesis remains a challenge for advancing materials science. A key focus of this challenge is how to enable selective synthesis, particularly as it pertains to metastable materials. This perspective addresses the question: how can ``spectator'' elements, such as those found in double ion exchange (metathesis) reactions, enable selective materials synthesis? By observing reaction pathways as they happen (\emph{in situ}) and calculating their energetics using modern computational thermodynamics, we observe transient, crystalline intermediates that suggest that many reactions attain a local thermodynamic equilibrium dictated by local chemical potentials far before achieving a global equilibrium set by the average composition. Using this knowledge, one can thermodynamically ``shortcut'' unfavorable intermediates by including additional elements beyond those of the desired target, providing access to a greater number of intermediates with advantageous energetics and selective phase nucleation. Ultimately, data-driven modeling that unites first-principles approaches with experimental insights will refine the accuracy of emerging predictive retrosynthetic models for complex materials synthesis.

Abstract:Chemistry is a systems science that deals with complex-dynamic systems and systems thinking is an essential aspect of chemical practices. Thus, a systems thinking approach is needed in chemistry education for meaningful learning of the subject matter. Despite this necessity, systems thinking has not received sufficient attention in chemistry education where it is typically linked to the teaching of sustainability goals. Consequently, it is important to develop a framework for implementing systems thinking from a chemical perspective. This article analyzes the philosophy of chemistry and chemistry education literature and chemists’ reflections on chemical practice and argues that systems thinking is an indispensable aspect of our discipline through a cycle of (1) modeling systems, (2) prediction, and (3) retrospection. In light of this analysis, competence in chemical thinking and meaningful learning of chemistry is linked to systems thinking and a novice-expert continuum is defined in terms of systems thinking skills in chemistry. It is also discussed how systems thinking can be implemented in chemistry education by identifying and modeling key aspects of studied systems, in particular emergence mechanisms of systemic properties, and engaging students in modeling systems-prediction-retrospection cycles through compare-predict-observe-explain tasks that highlight the focused key aspects. This approach is exemplified in the context of atomic systems and their properties at the undergraduate level.

Abstract:This study explores the art of blacksmithing in Guji Oromo to locate underlying chemistry concepts, knowledge, and ways of knowing. The ethnographic case study design was employed, in which 11 blacksmiths were engaged through observation and semi-structured interviews. The data from the interview and observation were separately analyzed and triangulated against each other thematically. As a result, it was found that the blacksmiths in Guji use three mechanisms to identify the quality and suitability of metals collected for redesigning: textual, mechanical, and sparking tests. Besides, blacksmiths with no or little schooling have a remarkable conception of the fundamentals of metals and metallic bonding, malleability and ductility as a measure of metal qualities, rusting as threats to the existence of metals and how to prevent, metallic crystal and micro crystal rearrangement and thermal conductivity of metals. Moreover, the setting and underlying ways of knowing were found to be so constructivist because novices are allowed to explore and learn their way with minimal involvement from the experienced ones. Concerning the origin of blacksmithing, two themes of hypothesis were found in this study. One is that the origination of the art is among the ancestors of Guji themselves, and the other is that the explorers and metallurgists from other communities in Kenya or southern Ethiopia introduced the art. Thus, the narratives are controversial which call for further study. In conclusion, the findings revealed that the blacksmithing practice in Guji has utilizable chemistry contents and concepts that could enhance learning of chemistry by creating familiar context.

Abstract:A Hegelian version of the concept of problematic is used to investigate the underlying theoretical unity and structure of Arabic physical science (physics, astronomy and chemistry). A contradictory triad (associated with Platonism, Aristotelian philosophy and Ptolemaic science) is identified at the heart of the Arabic project for physical science. The paper focuses on the valiant attempts made by leading Arabic scientists to overcome these contradictions without transcending or tearing apart the prevailing problematic. The following question is then addressed: why was Arabic physical science reformist, rather than revolutionary, unlike Renaissance European physical science? An answer is proposed in terms of the history, nature and decline of Arabic rationalism.
