Abstract:Contrasts are statistical procedures for asking focused questions of data. Compared to diffuse or omnibus questions, focused questions are characterized by greater conceptual clarity and greater statistical power when examining those focused questions. If an effect truly exists, we are more likely to discover it and to believe it to be real when asking focused questions rather than omnibus ones. Researchers, teachers of research methods and graduate students will be familiar with the principles and procedures of contrast analysis, but will also be introduced to a series of newly developed concepts, measures, and indices that permit a wider and more useful application of contrast analysis. This volume takes on this new approach by introducing a family of correlational effect size estimates.

Abstract:Abstract While the term “reactivity” has come to be associated with specific phenomena in the social sciences, having to do with subjects’ awareness of being studied, this paper takes a broader stance on this concept. I argue that reactivity is a ubiquitous feature of the psychological subject matter and that this fact is a precondition of experimental research, while also posing potential problems for the experimenter. The latter are connected to the worry about distorted data and experimental artifacts. But what are experimental artifacts and what is the most productive way of dealing with them? In this paper, I approach these questions by exploring the ways in which experimenters in psychology simultaneously exploit and suppress the reactivity of their subject matter in order to produce experimental data that speak to the question or subject matter at hand. Highlighting the artificiality of experimental data, I raise (and answer) the question of what distinguishes a genuine experimental result from an experimental artifact. My analysis construes experimental results as the outcomes of inferences from the data that take material background assumptions as auxiliary premises. Artifacts occur when one or more of these background assumptions are false, such that the data do not reliably serve the purposes they were generated for. I conclude by laying out the ways in which my analysis of data quality is relevant to, and informed by, recent debates about the replicability of experimental results.

On the contrast response function of adapted neural populations

Abstract:The magnitude of neural responses in sensory cortex depends on the intensity of a stimulus and its probability of being observed within the environment. How these two variables combine to influence the overall response of cortical populations remains unknown. Here we show that, in primary visual cortex, the vector magnitude of the population response is described by a separable power-law that factors the intensity of a stimulus and its probability. Moreover, the discriminability between two contrast levels in a cortical population is proportional to the logarithm of the contrast ratio.

Abstract:After receiving enthusiastic support during the 1960s and 1970s, the program of ‘Contrastive linguistics’ led a somewhat modest, if not marginal, existence during the two subsequent decades. The main reason for the apparent failure of this program was, of course, that the high hopes seen in its potential for making foreign language teaching more efficient were disappointed. Empirical work on the process of L2-acquisition from different native languages as starting points showed that contrastive linguistics cannot simply be equated with a theory of foreign language acquisition. A second problem was that a central aspect of the contrastive program, i.e. the writing of comprehensive contrastive grammars for language pairs, was hardly ever properly implemented. Finally, there was the problem of finding a place for contrastive linguistics within the spectrum of language comparison, relative to other comparative approaches to linguistic analysis. It is the third of these issues that is addressed by the present article. It will be shown that only by relating contrastive linguistics to other subfields of comparative linguistics and by delimiting it from them will we obtain a clear picture of its agenda, its potential and its limits.

Abstract:In the course of using Mueller-Hinton agar with 1% Supplement C (SC) (Difco, Detroit, MI) as a susceptibility test medium for Haemophilus influenzae, one lot of SC was encountered whose use was associated with markedly increased ampicillin MICs. Acidimetric and chromogenic cephalosporin filter paper disc tests of SC failed to detect beta-lactamase activity. Macrobroth dilution MIC tests to determine substrate specificity showed SC to antagonize benzylpenicillin and ampicillin but not cephalothin, cefazolin, or cefaclor, with the antagonism being prevented by the addition of clavulanic acid. High pressure liquid chromatographic analysis of reference and reaction solutions of benzylpenicillin with SC showed almost complete degradation of benzylpenicillin to benzylpenicilloic acid after 24 hr at 37 degrees C. For two other lots of SC that had passed MIC quality control testing, similar high pressure liquid chromatographic studies demonstrated slow conversion of small amounts of benzylpenicillin to benzylpenicilloic acid. These findings indicate that the beta-lactam antagonism by SC was due to the presence of a contaminating beta-lactamase directed primarily toward the penicillins.

Abstract:The human visual system can distinguish variations in image contrast over a much larger range than measurements of the static relationship between contrast and response in visual cortex would suggest. This discrepancy may be explained if adaptation serves to re-center contrast response functions around the ambient contrast, yet experiments on humans have yet to report such an effect. By using event-related fMRI and a data-driven analysis approach, we found that contrast response functions in V1, V2, and V3 shift to approximately center on the adapting contrast. Furthermore, we discovered that, unlike earlier areas, human V4 (hV4) responds positively to contrast changes, whether increments or decrements, suggesting that hV4 does not faithfully represent contrast, but instead responds to salient changes. These findings suggest that the visual system discounts slow uninformative changes in contrast with adaptation, yet remains exquisitely sensitive to changes that may signal important events in the environment.
Modeling Chromatic Contrast Sensitivity Across Different Background Colors and Luminance

Abstract:In this research we compare chromatic contrast sensitivity models for two separate datasets and for the pooled dataset. They were obtained from two studies employing a very similar experimental paradigm. The data represent threshold visibilities of chromatic Gabor patterns varying in spatial frequency, background chromaticity, direction of color modulation and luminance, at constant stimulus size. Using the extended data set, we reconfirm our previously reported finding that a model based on coloropponent contrast signals is an improvement over a cone contrast model. However, when linear background scaling in classic cone contrast is replaced by nonlinear background scaling, an improvement of almost similar size is obtained. The results of this study can be of interest for the development of vision models employing the processing of spatio-chromatic information.
Adaptive Contrast Test for Dose-Response Studies and Modeling

Abstract:We propose a powerful adaptive contrast test with ordinal constraint contrast coefficients determined by observed responses. The adaptive contrast test can perform using easily calculated contrast coefficients and existing statistical software. We provide the sample SAS program codes of analysis and calculation of power for the adaptive contrast test. After the adaptive contrast test shows the statistically significant dose-response, we consider to select the best dose-response model from multiple dose-response models. Based on the best model, we identify a recommended dose. We demonstrate the adaptive contrast test for sample data. In addition, we show the calculation of coefficient, test statistic, and recommended dose for the actual study. We perform the simulation study with eleven scenarios to evaluate the performance of the adaptive contrast test. We confirmed the statistically significant dose-response for the sample data and the actual study. In the simulation study, we confirmed that the adaptive contrast test has higher power in most scenarios compared to the conventional method. In addition, we confirmed that the type 1 error rate of the adaptive contrast test was maintained at a significance level when there was no difference between the treatment groups. We conclude that the adaptive contrast test can be applied unproblematically to the dose-response study.

Varying risk comparison elements: effects on public reactions

Abstract:Expanding a limited empirical base on effects of risk comparisons, a pilot experiment explored how varying elements of such comparisons might influence public response. The scenario used was a hypothetical trial of an asbestos-installing firm for putting students and staff at a junior high school at "unreasonable risk," first used by Slovic et al. (1990). Study participants played the role of jurors in the trial, asked to rate the risk, the firm's guilt, whether it should be made liable for future health effects, whether the school should be occupied in its current condition, and whether the asbestos should be removed at a cost of 3 million dollars. Opportunity samples of New Jersey residents (n= 309) received information intended to vary four comparison attributes: number of dimensions of comparison; single versus multiple ways of expressing mortality; a narrative to explain and justify the risk comparison; and the hypothetical role of the participant (juror vs. parent). The dependent variable was a hazard scale constructed from four of the five postcomparison judgments. ANOVA found format variations swamped in their effect by concern about asbestos, with the absence of a narrative and the parental role being the only attributes that increased negative risk reactions. Multiple regression analyses found that multidimensionality, narrative, role, and the presence of any risk comparison at all had significant effects when these (plus death formats) were the only independent variables. However, only multidimensionality (which increased negative reactions) retained significance when asbestos concern, risk beliefs (no safe level of exposure to a carcinogen; any exposure leads to cancer), and demographic variables were added to the analysis. Concern and risk beliefs alone explained 33% of variance in hazard scores; adding demographics and risk comparison variables only raised explained variance to 36% (having children at home and being exposed to multidimensional risk comparisons raised scores; age and income lowered them). The results underline the potentially small effect of risk comparison information on risk views (at least between subjects), but offer some insight into aspects of message design left unexplored in empirical literature to date.

Abstract:To claim similarity of multiple dose-response curves in interlaboratory studies in regulatory toxicology is a relevant issue during the assay validation process. Here we demonstrated the use of dose-by-laboratory interaction contrasts, particularly Williams-type by total mean contrasts. With the CRAN packages statint and multcomp in the open-source software R the estimation of adjusted p-values or compatible simultaneous confidence intervals is relatively easy. The interpretation in terms of global or partial equivalence, i.e. similarity, is challenging, because thresholds are not available a-priori. This approach is demonstrated by selected in-vitro Ames MPF assay data.

Contrastive Sets and Framing: A Case Study in Scientific Writing

Abstract:I describe an activity created to help our students learn how to write a scientific paper by reverse engineering a contrastive set of existing papers. I look at three recent implementations of this activity and use a multiple cognitive models approach to begin understanding the variance. This leads to a reasonable strategy for further investigation. First, I describe the conception and design of the activity structure, and how a contrastive set was constructed. I create an initial coding scheme to characterize group behavior in the three implementations, with special attention paid to analyzing student dialog on the structure of scientific papers and their ideas about the reasons for the peculiar features they observe. There is a striking difference in the way students engaged with the activity between the implementations not all of which can be ascribed to differences in activity structures, and the remainder of the paper is concerned with the use of resources and framing, case-based reasoning and Gibson's ecological perspective to understand the reason for this difference.
Cone interaction and color substitution as revealed by pattern ERG

Abstract:Transient electroretinograms to a reversing color-contrast checkerboard pattern (P-ERG) were recorded in a protanomalous, a deuteranomalous, and a normal observer. Alternate monochromatic checks were of constant wavelength (630 nm red-531 nm green), while the relative energies were varied systematically. When changing the radiance ratio 630 nm-531 nm of the stimulus, the normal subject exhibited a P-ERG to all stimuli with only a relative amplitude minimum at a distinct radiance ratio, whereas the color-deficient observers failed to show a P-ERG at some color contrast 630 nm-531 nm, the radiance ratio of which was different in the protan and deutan. From the radiance ratio of color contrast for the smallest potential in the normal observer, we conclude that the green- and red-sensitive cone mechanism provides a difference signal which generates the response. The data from the color-deficient observer support the view that color discrimination in protans and deutans is reduced because the input of one type of photoreceptor is missing.
The Relative Importance of the Contrast and Assimilation Effects in Decisions Under Risk

Abstract:Past research on decisions under risk has documented two contradictory context effects: the contrast effect, where risk preferences in "target" tasks diverge from those in previous "surrounding" tasks, and the assimilation effect that implies the opposite bias. We present four web experiments (three preregistered) that clarify the conditions determining the relative prominence of these opposing effects. Our experiments focus on choice patterns in "target" tasks where participants choose between the status quo and a risky mixed gamble with an expected value of zero. Study 1 examines the impact of surroundings that differ from the target task with respect to the expected benefit from risk‐taking. The findings reveal a strong contrast effect: Decreasing the attractiveness of risk‐taking in the surrounding tasks increased the risk‐taking rate in the target tasks from 53.2% to 79.7%. Study 2 investigates the impact of surroundings that differ in the payoff domain. The findings indicate a strong assimilation effect: Decreasing the attractiveness of risk‐taking in the surrounding tasks decreased the risk‐taking rate in the target tasks from 74.7% to 36.5%. Additionally, the results revealed unpredicted and robust reversed loss aversion patterns which Studies 3 and 4 further clarify. Our findings (1) suggest that the isolated within‐task computations assumed by leading descriptive models overlook substantial contextual considerations, (2) clarify the factors determining the impact of the contrast and assimilation effects in decisions under risk, and (3) provide a theoretical framework for making useful predictions in various scenarios.

Advances in Methods and Practices in Psychological Science

Abstract:According to cognitive-dissonance theory, performing counterattitudinal behavior produces a state of dissonance that people are motivated to resolve, usually by changing their attitude to be in line with their behavior. One of the most popular experimental paradigms used to produce such attitude change is the induced-compliance paradigm. Despite its popularity, the replication crisis in social psychology and other fields, as well as methodological limitations associated with the paradigm, raise concerns about the robustness of classic studies in this literature. We therefore conducted a multilab constructive replication of the induced-compliance paradigm based on Croyle and Cooper (Experiment 1). In a total of 39 labs from 19 countries and 14 languages, participants ( N = 4,898) were assigned to one of three conditions: writing a counterattitudinal essay under high choice, writing a counterattitudinal essay under low choice, or writing a neutral essay under high choice. The primary analyses failed to support the core hypothesis: No significant difference in attitude was observed after writing a counterattitudinal essay under high choice compared with low choice. However, we did observe a significant difference in attitude after writing a counterattitudinal essay compared with writing a neutral essay. Secondary analyses revealed the pattern of results to be robust to data exclusions, lab variability, and attitude assessment. Additional exploratory analyses were conducted to test predictions from cognitive-dissonance theory. Overall, the results call into question whether the induced-compliance paradigm provides robust evidence for cognitive dissonance.

Abstract:Group Processes &Intergroup Relations, Ahead of Print. Are conservatives as competent as liberals? Are liberals as competent as conservatives? Logically, one might assume agreement with one implies agreement with the other. However, we found that people rely on contrast modeling when making these types of similarity judgements. Specifically, people use their own social identity as a metric for weighing evaluative statements asymmetrically based on how they are framed (i.e., which group comes first). Thus, conservatives agree more strongly with the first framing of the statement, while liberals agree more strongly with the second, despite similar semantic meanings underlying both statements. Four studies (N = 1,405) examined the cognitive processes leading to this similarity judgement. Further, we show that identity centrality moderates reliance on contrast modeling. Our findings suggest that cognitive mechanisms underlying social group comparisons are analogous to the mechanisms used to compare nonsocial categories.

Abstract:The preponderance of research on trial-by-trial recruitment of affective control (e.g., conflict adaptation) relies on stimuli wherein lexical word information conflicts with facial affective stimulus properties (e.g., the face-Stroop paradigm where an emotional word is overlaid on a facial expression). Several studies, however, indicate different neural time course and properties for processing of affective lexical stimuli versus affective facial stimuli. The current investigation used a novel task to examine control processes implemented following conflicting emotional stimuli with conflict-inducing affective face stimuli in the absence of affective words. Forty-one individuals completed a task wherein the affective-valence of the eyes and mouth were either congruent (happy eyes, happy mouth) or incongruent (happy eyes, angry mouth) while high-density event-related potentials (ERPs) were recorded. There was a significant congruency effect and significant conflict adaptation effects for error rates. Although response times (RTs) showed a significant congruency effect, the effect of previous-trial congruency on current-trial RTs was only present for current congruent trials. Temporospatial principal components analysis showed a P3-like ERP source localized using FieldTrip software to the medial cingulate gyrus that was smaller on incongruent than congruent trials and was significantly influenced by the recruitment of control processes following previous-trial emotional conflict (i.e., there was significant conflict adaptation in the ERPs). Results show that a face-only paradigm may be sufficient to elicit emotional conflict and suggest a system for rapidly detecting conflicting emotional stimuli and subsequently adjusting control resources, similar to cognitive conflict detection processes, when using conflicting facial expressions without words.

An Aligned Rank Transform Procedure for Multifactor Contrast Tests

Abstract:Data from multifactor HCI experiments often violates the normality assumption of parametric tests (i.e., nonconforming data). The Aligned Rank Transform (ART) is a popular nonparametric analysis technique that can find main and interaction effects in nonconforming data, but leads to incorrect results when used to conduct contrast tests. We created a new algorithm called ART-C for conducting contrasts within the ART paradigm and validated it on 72,000 data sets. Our results indicate that ART-C does not inflate Type I error rates, unlike contrasts based on ART, and that ART-C has more statistical power than a t-test, Mann-Whitney U test, Wilcoxon signed-rank test, and ART. We also extended a tool called ARTool with our ART-C algorithm for both Windows and R. Our validation had some limitations (e.g., only six distribution types, no mixed factorial designs, no random slopes), and data drawn from Cauchy distributions should not be analyzed with ART-C.

Abstract:Neurons in primary visual cortex (area V1) adapt in different degrees to the average contrast of the environment, suggesting that the representation of visual stimuli may interact with the state of cortical gain control in complex ways. To investigate this possibility, we measured and analyzed the responses of neural populations to visual stimuli as a function of contrast in different environments, each characterized by a unique distribution of contrast. Our findings reveal that, for a given stimulus, the population response can be described by a vector function r(g_e c), where the gain g_e is a decreasing function of the mean contrast of the environment. Thus, gain control can be viewed as a reparameterization of a population response curve, which is invariant across environments. Different stimuli are mapped to distinct curves, all originating from a common origin, corresponding to a zero-contrast response. Altogether, our findings provide a straightforward, geometric interpretation of contrast gain control at the population level and show that changes in gain are well coordinated among members of a neural population.

Contrastive Pragmatics

Abstract:Abstract Contrastive pragmatics is closely associated with the use of parallel and comparable corpora for studying the similarities and differences between languages. Parallel corpora have now been extended to more than two languages making them more relevant for typological research, and they can be used to investigate whether there are (discourse) universals across languages. Contrastive pragmatic studies also need to take into account aspects of the communication situation and the social and cultural context. As a result, many contrastive studies nowadays are doubly contrastive in that they compare pragmatic phenomena across both genres and languages. Scholars have also begun to combine contrastive analysis (translations) with the diachronic analysis of pragmatic phenomena in historical corpora, and pragmatic phenomena are studied contrastively with the focus being on sociolinguistic aspects. Illustrating these new uses is a case study which compares English absolutely with Swedish absolut .
