Abstract:This represent the cross‐linking points and overall architecture of the 3D network providing a clearer understanding of the structural characteristics and interactions within the hydrogels. This study explores the synthesis and characterization of superabsorbent hydrogels derived from chemically modified gum Arabic, designed for controlled folic acid release. The synthesis involves a two‐step process: carboxymethylation followed by grafting with 2‐hydroxyethyl methacrylate via gamma irradiation. The resulting hydrogels exhibit enhanced mechanical strength and controlled diffusivity, essential for nutrient delivery systems. Key factors such as copolymer composition and irradiation dose are investigated, affecting the synthesis process. Systematic studies of swelling behaviors reveal that the hydrogel achieves a maximum swelling of 888.1% at 40 °C. The hydrogels are loaded with folic acid, and in vitro, sustained release profiles are examined under various pH conditions. The maximum release of 83.3% is observed after 24 h at pH 7.0, following a Korsmeyer–Peppas release mechanism. Different characterization techniques, confirm the successful synthesis and unique properties of the superabsorbent hydrogels. Rheological behavior analysis, scanning electron microscopy, and biocompatibility assessments provide a comprehensive understanding of the hydrogel structures. Gamma irradiation ensures a homogeneous network structure, crucial for optimal swelling behavior and mechanical properties. This research highlights the potential of eco‐friendly biopolymer hydrogels in precise drug delivery applications, leveraging the safety and process control benefits of gamma irradiation.

Abstract:The combination of hydrogel and fertilizer as slow release fertilizer hydrogel (SRFH) has become one of the most promising materials to overcome the shortcomings of conventional fertilizer by decreasing fertilizer loss rate, supplying nutrients sustainably, and lowering the frequency of irrigation. The hydrogel based on carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) and polyacrylic acid (PAA) (CMC/PAA) was synthesized. All materials, Vinasse, hydrogel (CMC/PAA) and (Vinasse/CMC-PAA) were characterized by FTIR, XRD, and SEM. The formed hydrogel was applied to control the salinity of Vinasse to use it as a cheap and economical fertilizer. The results showed that using the prepared hydrogel with Vinasse (V/CMC-PAA) as a slow-release organic fertilizer decreased the EC value through the first six hours from 1.77 to 0.35 mmohs/cm. Also, using V/CMC-PAA can control and keep the potassium as fertilizer for 50 days. The productivity per feddan from the sugar cane crop increased by about 15%, and the number of irrigations decreased from 5 to 4 times.
Fabrication of Grafted Carboxymethyl Cellulose Superabsorbent Hydrogel for Water Retention and Sustained Release of Ethephon in Sandy Soil

Abstract:The present study aimed to develop an efficient superabsorbent hydrogel for water conservation and slow release of Ethephon in sandy soil. Herein, carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) was grafted via a free radical polymerization technique with acrylamide and 2-Acrylamido-2-methylpropanesulfonic acid (AMPS) as hydrophilic monomers. The developed CMC-g-(PAM-co-PAMPS) graft copolymer superabsorbent hydrogel was characterized by FTIR, TGA, and SEM analysis to prove the occurrence of the grafting process. Several factors affecting the grafting process were investigated, while maximum grafting (%) value reached 91%. Moreover, increasing AMPS ratio obviously improved the swelling degree of the developed hydrogel with a maximal value of 17,770%. Moreover, addition of 2% of hydrogel to sandy soil potentially enhanced the water retention by 47% compared to pure sandy soil which retained about 7% of water. Besides, increasing Ethephon ratio up to 20% significantly increased its loading (%) value up to 88%, while about 87% of Ethephon was released within 28 days in a slow and sustained manner. The results suggested that the fabricated grafted hydrogel can serve as nutrient carrier and amendment for sandy soil for advanced agricultural applications.

Abstract:Superabsorbent hydrogels based on polyacrylamide (PAAm) and Na-alginate (Alg) or chitosan (CS) were synthesized by γ-rays. The effect of dose and copolymer composition on gel content and water absorbency of PAAm/Alg, PAAm/CS and PAAm/Alg/CS hydrogels were studied. The gel content and water absorbency follows the order PAAm/Alg>PAAm/Alg/CS>PAAm/CS. The effect of different cations, fertilizers, buffers on water absorbency of the hydrogels was investigated. Water retention capability of swollen hydrogels as a function of time was studied. PAAm/Alg hydrogel has a high water retention capability. An application of the prepared hydrogels in agricultural fields was performed using maize plants. The results showed that the presence of hydrogels had growth promotion effect on quality and quantity of maize plants. The plants treated by PAAm/Alg hydrogels showed 50% increase in the grain yield suggesting their possible use as a soil conditioner and a water reservoir for plant-soil system.

Abstract:Synthesis, characterization and application of a superabsorbent hydrogel from A. heterophyllus Lam seed polysaccharides. Sustainability in agriculture can only be achieved by protecting important resources, one of them being water. Availability of water in the soil greatly influences agricultural productivity. Hydrogels play a key role in ensuring water availability and achieving agricultural sustainability. A novel superabsorbent hydrogel was synthesized from Artocarpus heterophyllus Lam seed polysaccharides. The synthesized hydrogel was characterized using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, X‐ray diffraction, thermogravimetric analysis, and scanning electron microscopy. Swelling capacity of the hydrogel in different solutions, water retention duration, its influence on the soil water holding capacity (SWHC), and degradation in soil were assessed. The hydrogel absorbs up to 326 g/g and degrades naturally at around 1.4 wt% daily. The hydrogel improved the SWHC by 34% at a concentration of 0.3% w/w. Further pot experiments with black gram (Vigna mungo (L.) Hepper) plants showed that the superabsorbent hydrogel ensured water availability for 35 days and relieved the plants from drought‐induced stress. The data presented here indicates that the synthesized hydrogel can potentially be used as a soil conditioner for the sustained release of water and fertilizer.

Abstract:Agricultural production is influenced by the water content in the soil and availability of fertilizers. Thus, superabsorbent hydrogels, based on polyacrylamide, natural cashew tree gum (CG) and potassium hydrogen phosphate (PHP), as fertilizer and water releaser were developed. The structure, morphology, thermal stability and chemical composition of samples of polyacrylamide and cashew tree gum hydrogels with the presence of fertilizer (HCGP) and without fertilizer (HCG) were investigated, using X-ray diffractometry (XRD), Fourier Transformed Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR), Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), Thermogravimetric Analysis (TGA/DTG) and Energy Dispersive Spectroscopy (EDS). Swelling/reswelling tests, textural analysis, effect of pH, release of nutrients and kinetics were determined; the ecotoxicity of the hydrogels was investigated by the Artemia salina test. The results showed that PHP incorporation in the hydrogel favored the crosslinking of chains. This increased the thermal stability in HCGP but decreased the hardness and adhesion properties. The HCGP demonstrated good swelling capacity (~15,000 times) and an excellent potential for reuse after fifty-five consecutive cycles. The swelling was favored in an alkaline pH due to the ionization of hydrophilic groups. The sustained release of phosphorus in HCGP was described by the Korsmeyer–Peppas model, and Fickian diffusion is the main fertilizer release mechanism. Finally, the hydrogels do not demonstrate toxicity, and HCGP has potential for application in agriculture.

Abstract:The aim of this work is a synthesis of suitable hydrogel to produce slow‐release fertilizer using recycled cellulose which is obtained from waste paper. For this purpose, initially, we extracted alpha cellulose from waste paper and modified it to obtain carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC). Then, the CMC was converted to a suitable hydrogel through in situ graft copolymerization of acrylic acid and vinyl acetate in the presence of methylene bisacrylamide as a crosslinker. The various factors that affect hydrogel synthesis, such as the amounts of CMC, monomers, initiator, and crosslinker, were evaluated. In the optimized formulation, the weight ratio of monomers to CMC is 7, the molar ratio of monomers to each other is 1, and the crosslinker is used as 3 molar percent of monomers. The products were characterized using Fourier transform infrared, thermal gravimetric analysis, and scanning electron microscope analyses. The swelling behavior of the synthesized hydrogels was evaluated in different environments, such as distilled water, tap water, salt water, and different pH levels. The swelling ratio increases with an increase in pH level. Between the synthesized hydrogels, the best one was selected for slow‐release fertilizer production and loaded with 20‐20‐20 fertilizer (NPK), and the release behavior was evaluated. In an alkaline pH, there was a long time for NPK release within a slow‐release medium and even after 361 h, the release process was continued. Also, the performance of the fertilizer‐loaded hydrogel in soil using water holding capacity and water retention ratio tests were evaluated.

Abstract:Controlled release of fertilizers using hydrogels is one of the sustainable methods for increasing the effectiveness of chemical fertilizers and reducing their adverse effects on the environment. Here, we report an eco-friendly hydrogel based on polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) and soy-protein isolate (SPI) crosslinked with citric acid (CA) for the controlled release of fertilizer. Initially, PVA-SPI blends (PS) were prepared by solvent casting method and studied their physiochemical properties. The optimized blend (PS 8/2) was crosslinked with various weight percentages (5– 30%) of citric acid (CA). Hydrogels with 20% CA exhibited optimum properties which were then loaded with urea to prepare controlled release fertilizer hydrogel (CRFH). Spectrophotometry studies showed that 74.1% of urea was released by the samples in 28 days. Additionally, the soy-protein matrix released the nutrients along with urea, which can be considered an added benefit. Kinetics study revealed that the release of nutrients followed the Ritger-Peppas model. The water retention study indicated that the samples could retain water for up to 30 days with an increase in gel content. Plant growth performance, germination and drought resistance study were evaluated using amaranthus and pea seedlings as model plants. The results indicated a significant improvement in the growth performance of the plants. Also, a degradation rate of 65% was attained for hydrogel samples when it was buried in the soil for 100 days. The prepared hydrogels can therefore be regarded as a potential candidate for sustainable agriculture due to their controlled-dual release properties, water-retaining capacity, affordability, non-toxicity, and environmental friendliness.

Abstract:Cassia fistula and its carboxymethylated derivative‐based hydrogels (CA‐g‐AA and CMCA‐g‐AA) were synthesized and characterized by FTIR, 13C CPMAS‐NMR, SEM, TGA, rheology, and XRD. Release kinetics of dinotefuran in distilled water showed Fickian release behavior, supported by the Korsmeyer–Peppas and Higuchi models. A plant growth study revealed that CMCA‐g‐AA sustained plant growth for longer than CA‐g‐AA and control. The developed efficient strategy promotes sustainable agriculture. The agricultural industry prioritizes minimizing crop yield losses caused by pests, making it essential to develop effective, safe and sustainable pesticide formulations. Hydrogels are promising carriers for pesticide delivery, due to their high surface area, large pore volume, and pore size. In this study, we synthesized Cassia fistula (CA‐g‐AA) and its derivative carboxymethylated Cassia fistula‐grafted polysodium acrylate hydrogel (CMCA‐g‐AA) using free radical polymerization, with N, N'‐methylene bisacrylamide (MBA) as a crosslinker, for the ex‐situ encapsulation of dinotefuran. Characterization was performed using FTIR, 13C CPMAS‐NMR, SEM, TGA, rheology, and XRD. The maximum swelling capacity of hydrogels was investigated in distilled water. CA‐g‐AA and CMCA‐g‐AA hydrogels exhibited a dinotefuran loading percentage of 37 and 39% and released dinotefuran for 26 and 29 h, respectively. The dinotefuran release kinetics was analyzed by using the Korsmeyer‐Peppas and Higuchi models. Under drought like conditions, CMCA‐g‐AA‐treated soil sustained plant growth for 7 days, compared to CA‐g‐AA (5 days) and untreated soil (3 days). The novel hydrogel CMCA‐g‐AA enhanced soil water absorption and retention along with highlighting its potential for extended pesticide release. Thus, the developed CMCA‐g‐AA hydrogel is an efficient strategy for sustainable agriculture.

Abstract:Starch, with properties of eco-friendliness and abundance, is one of the most important natural polymers. Starch-based hydrogels were investigated as carriers of carbendazim to combine controlled-release and water absorption (WA). Three carbendazim-loaded hydrogels (CLHs) with different WA capacities were prepared by solution polymerization. The CLHs were characterized by Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and liquid-chromatography mass-spectrometry (LC-MS/MS). Release kinetics of CLHs was investigated using C-14-labeling method. The diffusion parameters of CLHs were 0.47, 0.57 and 0.81 in deionized H2O (ddH(2)O). WA affected release profile significantly, the release longevity reaching 240h when WA was 800 g/g in ddH(2)O. Solution pH influenced release profiles and the lowest release rate occurred in the lowest pH. Addition of CLH (1.3 g/kg soil) markedly increased water-holding capacity (WHC) of soil by 8.2%. The study indicated that starch-based CLH was a good controlled-release agent for carbendazim and water absorbent for soil. (C) 2015 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Abstract:In this article, a tamarind seed gum‐g‐poly (acrylic acid‐co‐2‐Acrylamido‐2‐methyl‐1‐propane sulfonic acid/polyvinyl alcohol) (TSG‐g‐P[AA‐co‐AMPS/PVA]) was prepared by aqueous solution polymerization. The Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and thermogravimetric analysis were used to characterize. The swelling behaviors, reusability and water‐retention capabilities of hydrogels were evaluated. Under optimum synthesis conditions, the maximum equilibrium absorption of hydrogel was 1295 g·g−1, 208 g·g−1, 116 g·g−1 in deionized water, tap water and NaCl solution (0.9 wt%) respectively. Application of the hydrogel to soils increased their water‐holding and fertilizer retention capacities. Furthermore, the excellent water retention anti‐evaporation performance indicated that the hydrogel has the potential for applications in future sustainable agriculture and forestry.

Sustained urea release performance of humic acid hydrogel for green vegetable growth environment evaluation

Abstract:In view of the eutrophication of the water environment caused by fertilizer leaching and the problem of nondegradability of the current slow-release fertilizers, potassium humate (KHA), sodium alginate (SA), and acrylic acid (AA) were used as raw materials to synthesize a KHA/SA/PAA hydrogel-based sustained-release material onto which urea was loaded. Infrared spectroscopy and scanning electron microscopy analyses indicated that KHA, SA, and, AA had undergone graft copolymerization. The polymer network exhibited a porous structure, and its degradation rate was 1.21%/day. The swelling and diffusion models of materials under different pH conditions are discussed. The material's equilibrium swelling rate was as high as 621.46% at pH 7. The results indicated that the diffusion of urea from the material was non-Fickian in character and urea release was favored in an acidic environment, a behavior in accordance with the first-order kinetic equation and Higuchi equation. Potted vegetable experiments indicated the optimal dosage of soil and KHA/SA/PAA sustained-release fertilizer to be 500:1. After 14 days, the soluble protein content of green cabbage leaves and chlorophyll could be increased by 31.4% and 33.2%, respectively, whereas the malondialdehyde content could be reduced by 21.1%, indicating that soil treatment with the KHA/SA/PAA sustained-release fertilizer can effectively improve crop quality.

Abstract:A series of superabsorbent polymers (SAPs) were synthesized free-radically using hydroxyethyl methacrylate (HEMA), acrylic acid (AA) and its potassium salt, methacrylic acid (MAA) and its potassium salt as monomers, and N,N'-Methylenebisacrylamide (N,N 1 -MBA) as crosslinker. The synthesized SAPs were evaluated for their chemical structure (FT-IR), thermal stability (TGA/DTG), surface morphology (SEM), and water, fertilizers uptake and release characteristics (swelling and deswelling). A SAP with the optimized composition of monomer and crosslinker had absorbed 898 g/g of water, and 68% of urea and 51% of potash from the 1% corresponding fertilizer solutions. The equilibrium swollen SAP had released the absorbed water completely over 21 days, but only 28% of potash and 43% of urea were released from the fertilizer-loaded SAPs under identical conditions with the same duration of release time. The water uptake followed Fickian diffusion mechanism for the optimized SAP. Thus obtained experimental results revealed that the synthesized SAP may be used as the matrix for the controlled release of water and fertilizers in the agricultural sector.

Abstract:ABSTRACTIn this article, we report a novel physical and chemical composite foaming system, which was used to successfully prepare high‐performance and low‐cost composite superabsorbent [poly(sodium acrylic acid) (PAA–Na)] hydrogels based on acrylic acid by free‐radical polymerization in a water bath under a nitrogen atmosphere without the use of any organic solvents. The prepared hydrogels showed superabsorbent properties, high water‐absorption abilities and swelling rates, a lighter packing density, and a multiporous microstructure. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and scanning electron microscopy revealed that the sodium dodecyl sulfate surfactant, sodium bicarbonate chemical foaming agent, and 1,1,2‐trifluorotrichloroethane physical foaming agent were evenly distributed and grafted onto the PAA–Na matrix. Water‐absorption, swelling rate, and packing density testing confirmed that the superabsorbent had a high water‐absorption ability and swelling rate and a lighter packing density. Furthermore, we investigated the effects of different foaming agents, including chemical and physical foaming agents, on the swelling and water‐retention capabilities of the superabsorbent hydrogels (SAHs).The results show that the combination of these foaming agents significantly improved the water‐absorbing capacity. With the help of these foaming agents, we obtained PAA–Na hydrogels without any organic solvents for posttreatment or special porogens; this is an environmentally beneficial way to prepare SAHs for hygiene and biomedical products. © 2016 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Composite hydrogels fabricated from konjac glucomannan and gellan gum: Rheological characterization and their potential application in sustainable agriculture

Abstract:In this study, konjac glucomannan (KG) was incorporated in high acyl gellan (HAG) and low acyl gellan (LAG) hydrogels in different ratios. The addition of KG increased pseudoplasticity and thermal hysteresis values of the hydrogels. Improvement in elasticity and water holding capacity (WHC) was observed in KG-LAG hydrogels. The highest WHC (98.5 %) was observed for 1K1H (KG:HAG = 1:1) and 3K7L (KG:LAG = 3:7) hydrogels. The crystallinity of the composite hydrogels was lower than hydrogels prepared from individual biopolymers. The hydrogels exhibited a rough surface with minute pores in the cross-section, due to the aggregation of glucomannan on the gellan network in the composite hydrogels. While HAG and 1K1H hydrogels exhibited greater swelling at low pH (3.0), LAG and 3K7L exhibited greater swelling at high pH (11.0). At pH 7.0, the hydrogels exhibited swelling indices >300 %. Incorporation of 1K1H hydrogel at 10 % (w/w) in sandy loamy soil under semi-arid conditions increased the germination of fenugreek microgreens from 60 % to 80 % on the 15th day. Furthermore, the moisture evaporation rate of the soil reduced from 35 % to <15 %, positively impacting the physicochemical properties of the microgreens. The composite hydrogels were successful in achieving a controlled release of phosphate fertilizer.

Abstract:To improve cyclic utilization of waste feather resources and enhance the efficiency of crop fertilizer, a novel superabsorbent slow-release hydrogels were prepared by feather keratin (FK), diatomite geopolymer (DG), urea and acrylic acid (AA) with thiol−ene click reaction and in-situ polymerization, which afforded FK composited DG polymer hydrogels containing urea (Urea@FK/DG-HGs). After characterizing structure and microscopic morphology, its swelling capacity, water retention and slow-release behavior were investigated. The obtained Urea@FK/DG-HGs presented good swelling, cyclic stability, foliar adhesion, water retention and slow-release properties. The swelling ratios got to 666.67 g/g in distilled water and 107.53 g/g in the saline solution (0.9% NaCl), respectively. The swelling rate was still 209.9 g/g after recycling 8 times. It enhanced the water retention performance of the soil and prolonged nutrients release, which the cumulative release of urea was 34.8% after 45 days, and the release behavior was belong to Fickian diffusion. Furthermore, the obtained Urea@FK/DG-HGs was used in agricultural applications to improve plant growth and proved to have a promotional effect on the germination and growth of holly seeds. In summary, it was an effective strategy for re-utilization of agricultural waste by adding waste feathers keratin into slow-release hydrogel. And the obtained multifunctional materials (Urea@FK/DG-HGs) with excellent water retention, slow-release and promotion of plant germination, has great application potential in agriculture industry.

Abstract:In agriculture, hydrogels can be addressed for effective operation of water and controlled-release fertilizers. Hydrogels have a significant ability for retaining water and improving nutrient availability in soil, enhancing plant growth while reducing water and fertilizer usage. This work aimed to prepare a hydrogel composite based on microalgae and biopolymers including chitosan and starch for use as a soil conditioner. The hydrogel composite was characterized by FTIR, XRD, and SEM. All hydrogel properties were studied including swelling degree, biodegradability, water-holding capacity, water retention, and re-swelling capacity in soil and water. The urea fertilizer loading and releasing behavior of the prepared hydrogels were investigated. The results revealed that the range of the maximal urea loading was between 99 and 440%, and the kinetics of loading was fitted with Freundlich model. The urea release % exhibited 78-95%, after 30 days, and the kinetics of release was fitted with zero-order, Higuchi, and Korsmeyer-Peppas models. Furthermore, the prepared hydrogels obtained a significant water-holding capacity, after blending soil (50 g) with small amount of hydrogels (1 g), the capacity increased in the range of 99.4-101.5%. In sum, the prepared hydrogels have the potential to be applied as a soil conditioner.
Preparation and characterization of starch carbamate modified natural sodium alginate composite hydrogel blend formulation and its application for slow-release fertilizer

Abstract:The exploration of environmentally friendly slow-release fertilizer (SRF) based on natural bio-polymers is of great importance in the development of modern agriculture and horticulture. Herein, a novel starch carbamate (SC) modified sodium alginate (SA) hydrogel (SC/SAH) was prepared utilizing as-synthesized SC and natural SA through the cationic ions crosslinking method and ultimately the corresponding slow-release fertilizer (SC/SAH-SRF) was successfully developed by immersing the dried SC/SAH matrix into saturated urea solution. Due to the low gelation temperature and high viscosity of the synthesized SC, the formed SC/SAH exhibits significantly enhanced properties including excellent water absorbency up to 8.02 g/g with considerable repeatability, abundant pore structure and high hydrophilicity compared with the neat SAH and natural starch based hydrogel (NS/SAH). Accordingly, the SC/SAH leads to higher urea loading amount ∼ 1.28 g/g. Importantly, the resultant SC/SAH-SRF also shows superior slow-release performance, yielding a cumulative urea release of only 61.6 % within 10 h and almost completely release >16 h in water, what's more, only 58.5 % of the urea releases within 25 days and exceeding 50 days for complete release in soil column assays. The slow-release of urea from SC/SAH-SRF well complies for the first-order kinetics and accomplishes via a non-Fickian diffusion process. Moreover, the pot experiment demonstrates that the SC/SAH-SRF has higher growth promotion role for the maize seedlings than those of others. Consequently, this work provides a novel strategy for preparing environmentally friendly SRF by blending modified starch and hydrogel.
