Abstract:Formaldehyde (HCHO) is known as one of the important indoor organic pollutants. How to remove and decompose the low concentration of formaldehyde at room temperature is important for indoor environments. Catalytic ozonation is an efficient method to thoroughly remove HCHO at room temperature, with high efficiency and few byproducts. A series of MnOx/γ-Al2O3 catalysts were prepared in this work via the impregnation method and treated with different reagents (acid, alkali, and H2O2) to evaluate their catalytic activity for HCHO removal. The results showed that MnAl-II (acid treatment) performed well in activity tests, reaching a nearly 100% HCHO conversion at an O3/HCHO of 2.0 and attaining a CO2 selectivity of above 95% at an O3/HCHO of 3.0 at 30 °C, with almost no ozone residual existing. The larger specific surface area, abundant oxygen vacancies, and higher number of acid sites contributed to the excellent performance of MnAl-II. Stability and H2O resistance tests of MnAl-II were also conducted. To reveal the intermediate product formation and further investigate the reaction mechanism of HCHO ozonation, in-situ DRIFTS measurement was carried out combined with DFT calculations.

Abstract:Formaldehyde (FA) is present ubiquitously in indoor environment as a hazardous pollutant with carcinogenic risks. For the efficient mitigation of FA, catalytic oxidation is a recommendable option to simultaneously satisfy both material cost (e.g., avoiding noble metals) and low-energy requirement (under dark and at room temperature (RT)). From this perspective, a cost-effective alkali modified copper manganite spinel (CuMn 2 O 4 ) catalyst has firstly been prepared and employed for FA oxidation. Specifically, alkali (1 mol L −1 potassium hydroxide)-modified CuMn 2 O 4 (1-CuMn 2 O 4 ) achieves 100% FA (50 ppm (gas hourly space velocity of 4777 h −1 )) conversion ( X FA ) at RT. The steady-state reaction rate of 1-CuMn 2 O 4 at 10% X FA is 8.18 × 10 −2 mmol g −1 h −1 . According to in situ diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy, FA molecules are oxidized into water and carbon dioxide through dioxymethylene and formate intermediates. Based on density functional theory simulation, the higher catalytic performance of 1-CuMn 2 O 4 for FA oxidation is attributed to the combined effects of firmer attachment of FA molecules to 1-CuMn 2 O 4 surface, lower energy cost of FA adsorption, and lower desorption energy for the final products from the substrate surface. The present work is expected to provide insights into high-performing non-noble metal catalysts for RT oxidative removal of FA from indoor air. Abstract:Formaldehyde (HCHO) is a harmful carcinogen to human health. HCHO elimination is therefore a great significance for health safety. Room temperature HCHO catalytic oxidation is the most promising way for HCHO elimination. In this study, we developed Pt/Fe3O4 catalyst by co-precipitation and hydrogen reduction method for HCHO elimination at room temperature. Characterizations of XRD and TEM revealed that Pt nanoparticles with size as small as 1.5 nm were highly dispersed on surface of support, H2-TPR and XPS suggested that Pt-support interaction was significant promoted and oxygen vacancy was richly formed in the Pt/Fe3O4 catalyst. The catalyst exhibited 100% HCHO conversion at 1 ppm HCHO/air at space velocity of 150 L/(gh), and displayed 70% conversion at 100 ppm HCHO/air at higher space velocity of 600 L/(gh) at room temperature. The efficient performances were originated from the tiny size of Pt nanoparticles and the strong metal-support interaction between Pt and Fe3O4. Infrared spectroscopy found that formate species were intermediates in the oxidation process, which decomposed to water and carbon dioxide at interface of Pt/Fe3O4 catalyst.

Abstract:Catalytic oxidation of formaldehyde (HCHO) at room temperature is a low-cost and efficient solution for indoor HCHO removal. In this work, NiCo2O4 nanowires were in-situ synthesized on nickel foam (NF) by a simple hydrothermal reaction and then decorated with platinum nanoparticles (NPs). The Pt/NiCo2O4-NF catalyst exhibited excellent HCHO oxidation capacity at ambient temperature, realizing a conversion rate of 90 % within 60 min. The nickel foam substrate prevents the aggregation of NiCo2O4 nanowire arrays. It also enables the growth of large-area and aligned nanowires, contributing to the uniform dispersion of Pt NPs. Moreover, due to the unique redox property and high reactivity of NiCo2O4, numerous surface oxygen vacancies and active oxygen species are generated together with Pt by NaBH4 reduction, which is beneficial to the adsorption and oxidation of HCHO. Moreover, the hierarchical macro-/mesoporous structure of Pt/NiCo2O4-NF facilitates the diffusion of gaseous reactants and provides easily accessible active sites. In contrast with nanosized catalysts, the three-dimensional (3D) Pt/NiCo2O4-NF catalyst possesses high machinability and practicability. This work may shed light on the fabrication of 3D hierarchical catalysts for oxidative HCHO removal and indoor air purification.

Abstract:The removal of formaldehyde (FA) is vital for indoor air quality management in light of its carcinogenic propensity and adverse environmental impact. A series of copper manganite spinel structures (e.g., CuMn2O4) are prepared using the sol-gel combustion method and treated with reduction or oxidation pretreatment at 300 °C condition. Accordingly, CuMn2O4-O ("O" suffix for oxidation pre-treatment in air) is identified as the best performer to achieve 100% conversion (XFA) of FA (50 ppm) at 90 °C; its performance, if assessed in terms of reaction kinetic rate (r) at XFA = 10%, is 5.02E-03 mmol g-1 h-1. The FA removal performance increases systematically with decreases in flow rate, FA concentration, and relative humidity (RH) or with increases in bed mass. The reaction pathways and intermediates of FA catalytic oxidation on CuMn2O4-A are studied with density functional theory simulations, temperature-programmed characterization experiments, and in-situ diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy. The synergistic combination of large quantities of adsorbed oxygen (OA) species and oxidized metal species (e.g., Cu2+) contribute to the enhanced catalytic performance of CuMn2O4-O to oxidize FA into CO2 with the reaction intermediates of H2CO2 (DOM), HCOO-, and CO. The present study is expected to provide valuable insights into the thermocatalytic oxidation of FA over spinel CuMn2O4 materials and their catalytic performances in relation to the key process variables.

Abstract:Formaldehyde (HCHO) is one of the major indoor air pollutants. TiO2supported Pt catalysts were prepared by sol-gel method and used to eliminate HCHO at room temperature without irradiation. The reduced Pt/TiO2catalyst (denoted as Pt/TiO2-H2) showed much higher activity than that calcined in air (denoted as Pt/TiO2-air). More than 96% of the conversion of HCHO was obtained over 0.5 wt% Pt/TiO2-H2, on which highly dispersed metallic Pt nanoparticles with very small size (~2 nm) were identified. Metallic Pt rather than cationic Pt nanoparticles provide the active sites for HCHO oxidation. Negatively charged metallic Pt nanoparticles facilitate the transfer of charge and oxygen species and the activation of oxygen.

Abstract:Formaldehyde (HCHO) is a ubiquitous indoor air pollutant that can cause a variety of adverse health effects; therefore, it is of paramount importance to remove HCHO from indoor air. Catalytic HCHO oxidation at room temperature is the most promising technique for indoor HCHO removal, which entails the development of high-efficiency HCHO oxidation catalysts. In this review, we comprehensively summarize the significant and recent advances in room-temperature HCHO oxidation over noble metal-based catalysts, which contain platinum (Pt), gold (Au), palladium (Pd), silver (Ag), and/or rhodium (Rh) as the essential ingredient. In particular, we focus on the relationship between the chemical and structural properties of the catalysts and their HCHO oxidation performance, as well as the catalytic reaction mechanisms, as revealed by sophisticated in-situ spectroscopic techniques and theoretical calculations. Through the past decade of research efforts, highly efficient HCHO oxidation can be achieved at ambient temperature over well-designed catalysts with minimal noble metal content (e.g.,< 0.1 wt%). A timely review of these significant findings is expected to provide valuable guidance for the design of low-cost yet highly efficient and robust noble metal-based catalysts for practical applications in indoor HCHO removal.

Abstract:Objective To explore catalytic oxidation of gaseous formaldehyde over activated carbon-supported platinum catalysts(Pt/AC) at room temperature.Methods Pt/AC catalysts were prepared by liquid reduction method using NaBH4 as the reducing agent.The effect of Pt loading(0.1%,0.5% and 1%) on formaldehyde removal was investigated.Results Reduced Pt nanoparticles of 18 nm diameter could be observed by transmission electron microscope.Formaldehyde removal efficiency was 98.2% in case of 0.5% Pt loading after reaction for 5 h.Conclusion The prepared Pt/AC catalysts in this study can be used for the efficient removal of formaldehyde in air.

Abstract:Catalytic oxidation at room temperature is recognized as the most promising method for formaldehyde (HCHO) removal. Pt-based catalysts are the optimal catalyst for HCHO decomposition at room temperature. Herein, flower-like hierarchical Pt/NiAl-LDHs catalysts with different [Ni2+]/[Al3+] molar ratios were synthesized via hydrothermal method followed by NaBH4 reduction of Pt precursor at room temperature. The flower-like hierarchical Pt/NiAl-LDHs were composed of interlaced nanoplates and metallic Pt nanoparticles (NPs) approximately 3–4 nm in diameter were loaded on the surface of the Pt/NiAl-LDHs with high dispersion. The as-prepared Pt/NiAl21 nanocomposite was highly efficient in catalyzing oxidation of HCHO into CO2 at room temperature. The high activity of the hierarchical Pt/NiAl21 nanocomposite was maintained after seven recycle tests, suggesting the high stability of the catalyst. Based on in situ diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy (DRIFTS) studies, a reaction mechanism was put forward about HCHO decomposition at room temperature. This work provides new insights into designing and fabricating high-performance catalysts for efficient indoor air purification.

Catalytic performance and mechanism of bismuth molybdate nanosheets decorated with platinum nanoparticles for formaldehyde decomposition at room temperature

Abstract:Catalytic oxidation at room temperature is considered as a promising strategy for removal of formaldehyde (HCHO), a widely occurring indoor air pollutant. A series of Bi2MoO6 nanosheets were prepared via one-step hydrothermal synthesis in this study, followed by decoration with Pt nanoparticles (NPs). The catalyst with Bi2MoO6 support prepared at 180 °C exhibited high and stable activity in catalytic oxidation of HCHO at room temperature. The excellent catalytic performance was attributed to its large specific area and pore volume, high level of surface active oxygen species, high content of metallic Pt NPs, and abundant oxygen vacancies. The good synergy and interaction between Pt and Bi2MoO6 promoted electron transfer, and facilitated the adsorption and oxidation of HCHO. The electronic interaction between Pt NPs and Bi2MoO6 accelerated the activation of oxygen species due to weakening of the surface BiO or MoO bonds adjacent to Pt NPs. Infrared spectra indicated that dioxymethylene and formate species were the main intermediates of HCHO oxidation. Density functional theory calculations showed that the dehydrogenation of HCO2, with an energy barrier of 282.1 kJ/mol, was the rate-determining step in catalytic oxidation process. This study provides new insights on the construction of high-efficiency catalysts for indoor formaldehyde removal.
Complete Elimination of Indoor Formaldehyde over Supported Pt Catalysts with Extremely Low Pt Content at Ambient Temperature

Abstract:A series of highly active supported Pt catalysts, developed by sodium borohydride reduction under mild preparation conditions, were used to eliminate indoor formaldehyde (HCHO) at ambient temperature. The influences of oxidation state, support and size of Pt particles, and the operating parameters were investigated. The reduced Pt nanoparticles with different supports are highly active for catalytic oxidation of HCHO. For example, nearly 100% HCHO conversion was obtained on the reduced Pt/TiO2 catalysts (denoted as Pt–TiO2) even with 0.1% Pt loading while it was less than 25% on the oxidized ones. Negatively charged metallic Pt nanoparticles, which probably facilitate the electron transfer and formation of active oxygen, provide the active sites for HCHO oxidation. The turnover frequencies (TOFs) of HCHO oxidation on Pt nanoparticles with different supports are not sensitive to the reducibility of support but somewhat affected by the Pt particle sizes. A maximum TOF of 2.87s−1 was obtained on the 1% Pt–MgO with Pt particle size of about 3nm. The 0.1% Pt–TiO2 catalyst remained highly active and stable in humid air with a wide gas hourly space velocity range between 40,000 and 240,000h−1 and initial HCHO concentration range between 5 and 30ppm.

Abstract:As an extremely toxic pollutant, formaldehyde (HCHO) is a risk to human health. Catalytic oxidation with noble-metal-based catalysts is considered to be the most effective and promising strategy for HCHO removal at room temperature. Unfortunately, it usually exhibits high cost. In this review, we aim to establish comprehensive viewpoints for noble-metal-based catalysts including platinum (Pt), palladium (Pd), rhodium (Rh), iridium (Ir), and gold (Au) using in ambient-temperature HCHO oxidation. Because the catalytic performance highly depends on the metal particle size for supported catalysts, we summarize the recent significant progress focusing on metal species with dispersions from nanoparticles to subnanoclusters and single atoms, which can yield atomic-level insight and enhance the utilization efficiency of metal atoms. First, the impacts of the noble-metal species status as well as their support properties are summarized. Relative humidity as a critical impact factor for catalytic activity during HCHO oxidation is also discussed. Then, the reaction mechanisms in terms of typical intermediates and reaction pathways are demonstrated. Importantly, the emerging combination method of adsorption and oxidation for the tandem elimination of HCHO is briefly introduced and discussed. Finally, the perspective on the challenges and opportunities to design highly efficient but low-cost noble-metal-based catalysts is put forward in combination with the process optimization technologies.

Harnessing Adsorption–Catalysis Synergy: Efficient Oxidative Removal of Gaseous Formaldehyde by a Manganese Dioxide/Metal–Organic Framework Nanocomposite at Room Temperature

Abstract:The potential utility of a transition metal oxide/metal–organic framework (MOF) nanocomposite has been explored using manganese dioxide (MnO2)/Universitetet i Oslo (UiO)‐66‐amine (NH2 (prototypical zirconium (Zr) MOF)) to develop an efficient adsorption–catalysis system for the removal of formaldehyde (FA) from the air. The room‐temperature FA (100 ppm) conversion (XFA (%)), when tested using five different MnO2 (wt%) loadings in the nanocomposite, is estimated as: 1% MnO2 (88%) > 2% MnO2 (86%) > 4% MnO2 (84%) > 6% MnO2 (75%) > 20% MnO2 (47%). The FA removal performance is lowered as the active catalytic sites are covered with the increases in the MnO2 loading (e.g., >1 wt%). The FA and molecular oxygen species preferably adsorb (and activate) onto the Zr atoms attached to the NH2 groups. The oxidation of FA into carbon dioxide proceeds subsequently through the formation of intermediates (e.g., dioxymethylene and formate). The MnO2 nanoclusters act as secondary reactive adsorption sites to boost the capture, activation, and oxidation of the FA molecules at the Zr active centers. Accordingly, the MnO2/UiO‐66‐NH2 nanocomposite is demonstrated to effectively harness the adsorption–catalysis synergy for highly efficient removal of FA relative to other well‐known catalysts (e.g., platinum and metal oxide‐based nanomaterials). The manganese dioxide (MnO2)/Universitetet i Oslo (UiO)‐66‐amine (NH2 (prototypical zirconium (Zr) metal–organic framework (MOF))) nanocomposite results in the effective harnessing of the adsorption (MnO2 reactive adsorption sites)‐catalysis (Zr‐NH2 centers) synergy. In the dark, the nanocomposite achieves room temperature oxidation of formaldehyde (FA) in the air. The Zr‐NH2 sites activate the FA and oxygen molecules to initiate oxidation.

Abstract:Formaldehyde (HCHO) is one of the most infamous indoor pollutants that imposes a great threat to human health. Herein, we report the development of a high-performance Pt/Fe2O3 catalyst for HCHO oxidation employing a facet- and defect-engineering strategy, with special focus on the surface structure effect of α-Fe2O3 on the catalytic properties. A supported Pt nanocatalyst on hollow octadecahedral α-Fe2O3 with exclusively exposed {113} and {104} facets was prepared using a hydrothermal method followed by impregnation-reduction treatment. The high-index facets of α-Fe2O3 render the formation of abundant oxygen vacancies and an improved dispersion of Pt nanoparticles. This led to an increased Pt/O-vacancy coexistence in close proximity, which collaboratively promote the generation of active oxygen and surface OH species. As a consequence, the Pt/Fe2O3-HO catalyst exhibited impressively high and stable activity towards HCHO oxidation at room temperature, which was five-fold higher than that of the supported Pt catalyst on commercial α-Fe2O3.

Abstract:Formaldehyde (HCHO) is a major indoor air pollutant and long-term exposure to HCHO may cause health problems including nasal tumors and skin irritation. Room-temperature catalytic oxidation decomposition of HCHO is considered as the most promising strategy for the removal of HCHO due to its environmental-friendly reaction conditions and energy-saving consideration. In this work, surface-fluorinated anatase TiO2 nanosheets with dominant {001} facets (FTiO2-NS) were first prepared by a hydrothermal method using Ti(OC4H9)4 and HF as precursors. Then, Pt/FTiO2-NS catalyst with 0.5wt% Pt loadings was obtained by a combined NaOH-assisted impregnation of titania with Pt precursor and NaBH4-reduction route. The catalytic activity was evaluated by catalytic oxidation decomposition of HCHO vapor at room temperature. Fluoride poisoning (F-poisoning) phenomenon of Pt/FTiO2-NS was first observed for oxidative decomposition of HCHO. The mechanism of F-poisoning is mainly due to blocking of Pt catalytic active sites by strong interactions between Pt and highly electronegative F. In order to recover the catalytic performance, a simple regeneration method for the deactivated Pt/FTiO2-NS catalysts was proposed by NaOH washing.
Mechanistic Study on Formaldehyde Removal over Pd/TiO2 Catalysts: Oxygen Transfer and Role of Water Vapor

Abstract:It has become a hot topic to destroy air pollutants such as formaldehyde (HCHO) using noble metal nanoparticles at ambient temperature. To reduce noble metal loading for saving cost and investigate the reaction mechanism presents two challenges for this reaction. In this study, highly efficient Pd/TiO2 catalysts were facilely synthesized with deposition–precipitation method followed by sodium borohydride (NaBH4) reduction at room temperature. XPS, H2-TPR and O2-TPD experiments were used to identify the oxygen species on the catalysts. Complete oxidation of HCHO can be achieved at ambient temperature over them even with 0.1wt% Pd loading. The Pd/TiO2 catalysts prepared by deposition–precipitation method is much more active than those prepared by impregnation method mainly due to the stronger capacity for the generation and transfer of chemisorbed oxygen. Water vapor is essential to HCHO oxidation. Hydroxyl radical (OH) from water vapor dissociation favors the adsorption and transfer of oxygen on the Pd/TiO2 catalysts, which is very important during HCHO oxidation.

Abstract:Manganese oxide-based catalysts have attracted extensive attention due to their relatively low cost and remarkable performance for removing VOCs. In this research, we used the Pechini method to synthesize manganese-cerium-nickel ternary oxide catalysts (MCN) and evaluated the effectiveness of catalytic destruction of formaldehyde (HCHO) and ozone at room temperature. FeOx prepared by the impregnation method was applied to modify the catalyst. After FeOx treatment, the catalyst represented the best performance on both HCHO destruction and ozone decomposition under dry conditions and exhibited excellent water vapor resistance. The as-prepared catalysts were next characterized via H2-temperature programmed reduction (H2-TPR), temperature programmed desorption of O2 (O2-TPD), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and the results demonstrated that addition of FeOx increased Mn3+ and Ce3+ concentrations, oxygen vacancies and surface lattice oxygen species, facilitated adsorption, and redox properties. Based on the results of in situ diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectrometry (DRIFTS), possible mechanisms of ozone catalytic oxidation of HCHO were proposed. Overall, the ternary mixed-oxide catalyst developed in this study holds great promise for HCHO and ozone decomposition in the indoor environment.

Abstract:Tungsten carbide (WC) nanostructures were prepared by carbothermal reduction (CR) of tungsten-impregnated pinewood-derived activated carbon (AC) at 1000 °C under an inert atmosphere. Brunauer-Emmet-Teller (BET) surface area, pore structures of the AC, and catalyst samples were evaluated by N2 adsorption-desorption experiments. The structures of the catalysts were characterized using X-ray powder diffraction (XRD). The morphologies and particle structures of the synthesized WC nanoparticles were investigated by field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM) and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM). The WC/AC material was used as support of the platinum catalysts for catalytic oxidation of formaldehyde (HCHO) from interior sources. Pt-WC/AC catalysts with different platinum loadings were assessed for the catalytic oxidation of HCHO at low temperature. The catalytic performance was found to be significantly influenced by reaction temperature, initial formaldehyde concentration, relative humidity, and space velocity. The testing results demonstrated that HCHO can be totally oxidized by the 1 wt% Pt-WC/AC catalyst in the gas hourly space velocity (GHSV) = 50,000 h−1 at 30 °C with a relative humidity (RH) of 40%.
