Abstract:Many methods exist for the synthesis of covalent organic frameworks (COFs), but precise morphology control allowing the tailoring of core-shell and yolk-shell nanostructures has been elusive, mainly due to poor control of the reaction-diffusion processes. Herein, we propose the precise regulation of the COF generation and decomposition rates and their relationship with the diffusion rate of COF species during the synthesis, which enables a successful preparation of core-shell, yolk-shell, hollow-spherical, and multiple yolk-shell COF structures with tunable sizes ranging from 200 to 1,400 nm Formed COF structures can serve as nanoreactors or nanocontainers, with the shell layer providing molecular-size selectivity determined by the nanopore size demonstrated here using Suzuki coupling reactions with phenylboronic acid, which produce a size-cutoff efficiency for halogenated aromatics approaching 100%. The precise morphology design and control of COF particles and hybrids may help enhance application efficiencies and provide access to new functionalities for COF materials.

Abstract:Imine-linked covalent organic frameworks (COFs) were synthesized to bear content-tunable, accessible, and reactive ethynyl groups on the walls of one-dimensional pores. These COFs offer an ideal platform for pore-wall surface engineering aimed at anchoring diverse functional groups ranging from hydrophobic to hydrophilic units and from basic to acidic moieties with controllable loading contents. This approach enables the development of various tailor-made COFs with systematically tuned porosities and functionalities while retaining the crystallinity. We demonstrate that this strategy can be used to efficiently screen for suitable pore structures for use as CO2 adsorbents. The pore-surface-engineered walls exhibit an enhanced affinity for CO2, resulting in COFs that can capture and separate CO2 with high performance.

Abstract:Radioactive iodine-capturing materials are urgently needed for the emerging challenges in nuclear waste disposal. The various pore structures of covalent organic frameworks (COFs) render them promising candidates for efficient iodine adsorption. However, the detailed structure–property relationship of COFs in iodine adsorption remains elusive. Herein, two polymorphic COFs with significantly different crystalline structures are obtained based on the same building blocks with varied molecular ratios. The two COFs both have high crystallinity, high specific surface area, and excellent chemical and thermal stability. Compared with the [C4+C4] topology (PyT-2) with an AA stacking form, the [C4+C2] topology (PyT-1) with an AB stacking form has more twisted pore channels and complex ink-bottle pores. At ambient conditions, PyT-1 and PyT-2 both exhibit good adsorption properties for iodine capture either in a gaseous or liquid medium. Remarkably, PyT-1 presents an excellent maximum adsorption capacity (0.635 g g−1), and the adsorption limit of PyT-2 is 0.445 g g−1 in an n-hexane solution with an iodine concentration of 400 mg L−1, which is highly comparable to the state-of-the-art iodine absorption performance. This study provides a guide for the future molecular design strategy toward novel iodine adsorbents.

Abstract:Herein, we show how the spatial environment in the functional pores of covalent organic frameworks (COFs) can be manipulated in order to exert control in catalysis. The underlying mechanism of this strategy relies on the placement of linear polymers in the pore channels that are anchored with catalytic species, analogous to outer-sphere residue cooperativity within the active sites of enzymes. This approach benefits from the flexibility and enriched concentration of the functional moieties on the linear polymers, enabling the desired reaction environment in close proximity to the active sites, thereby impacting the reaction outcomes. Specifically, in the representative dehydration of fructose to produce 5-hydroxymethylfurfural, dramatic activity and selectivity improvements have been achieved for the active center of sulfonic acid groups in COFs after encapsulation of polymeric solvent analogues 1-methyl-2-pyrrolidinone and ionic liquid.
Enabling Ultrahigh Surface Area of Covalently-linked Organic Framework for Boosted CO2 Capture: An Air Liquid Interfacial Plasma as Post-furnishing Protocol

Abstract:The cognitive intent of a highly ordered and robust adsorbent is extremely sensible and, in this context, Covalent Organic Framework (COF) materials have significantly burgeoned their scope in diverse applications. Herein, a simple time-competent hydrothermal procedure is presented to construct a covalent framework with an ultrahigh surface area of 1428 m2 /g that shows active adsorption of carbon dioxide (CO2 ) at variable temperature ranges. Moreover, a facile scalably controlled post-synthetic air liquid interfacial plasma (ALIP) induced protocol is substantiated that explicitly amplifies the surface area of the pristine framework even to a higher value of 2051 m2 /g. The post-synthetic plasma approach presented here led to the rapid enhancement of the surface area of the pristine COF by 43 %, which concurrently advances the CO2 uptake up to 67 %. Hence, the current study may open up a new frontier in the design as well as fine-tune the properties of the covalent framework that unfolds the advanced outlook in addressing the challenges of CO2 capture.

Abstract:Covalent organic frameworks (COFs) are emerging materials with high potential in catalysis. The thermal/chemical stabilities, adjustable porosities, and tunable functionalities with the flexibility of active sites' installation are promising features of COFs for catalysis. In this article, a comprehensive explanation of the designed fabrication of COFs for heterogeneous catalysis , including chemical catalysis, photocatalysis , electrocatalysis, and biocatalysis, is carried out to establish the structure–activity relationship. By establishing the advantages of COF-based catalysts over conventional catalysts, we have discussed catalytic active sites in COFs, including the reactive skeleton/linkages, reactive pendant groups, and reactive guest species such as metals, single-atom catalysts (SACs) and molecular catalysts. Despite, the emerging benefits, still, some challenges also have been highlighted with subsequent future perspectives.

Abstract:The effective control of crystallinity of covalent organic frameworks (COFs) and the optimization of their performances related to the crystallinity have been considered as big challenges. COFs bearing flexible building blocks (FBBs) generally own larger lattice sizes and broader monomer sources, which may endow them with unprecedented application values. Herein, we report the oriented synthesis of a series of two-dimensional (2D) COFs from FBBs with different content of intralayer hydrogen bonds. Studies of H-bonding effects on the crystallinity and adsorption properties indicate that partial structure of the COFs is “locked” by the H-bonding interaction, which consequently improves their microscopic order degree and crystallinity. Thus, the regulation of crystallinity can be effectively realized by controlling the content of hydrogen bonds in COFs. Impressively, the as-prepared COFs show excellent and reversible adsorption performance for volatile iodine with capacities up to 543 wt %, much higher than all previously reported adsorbents, although the variation tendency of adsorption capacities is opposite to their crystallinity. This study provides a general guidance for the design and construction of highly/appropriately crystalline COFs and ultrahigh-capacity iodine adsorbents.

Abstract:Pre-designed structures and tailor-made functions make covalent organic frameworks (COFs) quickly become promising reticular platforms for multidisciplinary fields. Despite the overarching success, controllable and large-scale synthesis of COFs is still a huge challenge. Moreover, the relationship between the structure and performance of COFs in various fields has not been well understood, seriously limiting their practical applications. In this review, we provide an insightful and fundamental understanding of COFs from structural perspectives, and correlate them with eventual performance in practical applications. By summarizing both the top-down and bottom-up approaches, we address how typical issues, such as the size, morphology, dispersity and stability of COFs, are resolved, which should be crucial for their function-oriented and large-scale production. Structural and physicochemical properties, such as pores, ligands, stacking, linkages, functional group, morphology, crystallinity, dimensionality and wetting, are also discussed in relation to various functions. In addition, in-depth discussions regarding the correlations between structural characteristics of COFs and their performance in catalysis, energy storage, gas/liquid adsorption and membrane separation are presented. Finally, perspectives for the future direction of this field are proposed, to provide useful guidance for the function-oriented design and scalable production of COFs to meet the practical requirements of applications.

Adsorption of Typical Dyes in Water by Sponge Based Covalent Organic Frameworks: Pore Size and Mechanism

Abstract:This study addressed the ambiguity surrounding the relationship between the pore size of covalent organic frameworks (COFs) and their adsorption capacity and rate. To achieve this, we synthesized COFs with five distinct pore sizes (COF1-COF5) and conducted a comprehensive analysis using kinetic models. Our findings indicated that the adsorption capacity and rate of methyl orange (MO) increased linearly with the pore size of COFs, from 1.25nm to 2.57nm. Notably, COF3, with a pore size of 2.57nm, exhibited the highest adsorption performance for MO, boasting an impressive capacity of 43.07mg/g. Furthermore, we tackled the challenge of COFs powder recovery by employing a one-pot synthesis method to create SP-COFs, where COFs powder was loaded onto polyurethane sponge. Through rigorous adsorption and analytical experiments, we demonstrated that SP-COF3 achieved rapid recovery while efficiently adsorbing MO, maintaining a high removal efficiency of over 95% even after 8 reuse cycles. The mechanism underlying MO adsorption on SP-COF3 was attributed to electrostatic interaction and hydrogen bonding, with the possibility of π-π interaction also being considered. Overall, this study provides valuable new insights into the tailored synthesis of COFs with specific structures and functionalities, shedding light on the crucial relationship between pore size and adsorption behavior. The development of SP-COFs presents a promising approach to enhance the practical application of COFs as highly efficient adsorbents.

Abstract:Covalent organic frameworks (COFs) as an emerging type of crystalline porous materials, have obtained considerable attention recently. They have exhibited diverse structure and attractive performance in various catalytic reactions. It is highly expected to have a systematic and comprehensive review summing up COFs-derived catalysts in homogeneous and heterogeneous catalysis, which is favorable to the judicious design of an efficient catalyst for targeted reaction. Herein, we focus on summarizing recent and significant developments in COFs materials, with an emphasis on both the synthetic strategies and targeted functionalization, and categorize it in accordance with the different types of catalytic reactions. Their potential catalysis applications are reviewed thoroughly. Moreover, a personal view about the future development of COFs catalysts with respect to the large-scale production is also discussed.

Abstract:ConspectusChemical reactions can be promoted at lower temperatures and pressures, thereby reducing the energy input, by introducing suitable catalysts. Despite its significance, the quest for efficient and stable catalysts remains a significant challenge. In this context, addressing the efficiency of catalysts stands out as a paramount concern. However, the challenges posed by the vague structure and limited tailorability of traditional catalysts would make it highly desirable to fabricate optimized catalysts based on the understanding of structure-activity relationships. Covalent organic frameworks (COFs), a subclass of fully designed crystalline materials formed by the polymerization of organic building blocks through covalent bonds have garnered widespread attention in catalysis. The precise and customizable structures of COFs, coupled with attributes such as high surface area and facile functional modification, make COFs attractive molecular platforms for catalytic applications. These inherent advantages position COFs as ideal catalysts, facilitating the elucidation of structure-performance relationships and thereby further improving the catalysis. Nevertheless, there is a lack of systematic emphasis on and summary of structural regulation at the atomic/molecular level for COF catalysis. Consequently, there is a growing need to summarize this research field and provide deep insights into COF-based catalysis to promote its further development.In this Account, we will summarize recent advances in structural regulation achieved in COF-based catalysts, placing an emphasis on the molecular design of the structures for enhanced catalysis. Considering the unique components and structural advantages of COFs, we present the fundamental principles for the rational design of structural regulation in COF-based catalysis. This Account starts by presenting an overview of catalysis and explaining why COFs are promising catalysts. Then, we introduce the molecular design principle for COF catalysis. Next, we present the following three aspects of the specific strategies for structural regulation of COF-based catalysts: (1) By designing different functional groups and integrating metal species into the organic unit, the activity and/or selectivity can be finely modulated. (2) Regulating the linkage facilitates charge transfer and/or modulates the electronic structure of catalytic metal sites, and accordingly, the intrinsic activity/selectivity can be further improved. (3) By means of pore wall/space engineering, the microenvironment surrounding catalytic metal sites can be modulated to optimize performance. Finally, the current challenges and future developments in the structural regulation of COF-based catalysts are discussed in detail. This Account provides insight into the structural regulation of COF-based catalysts at the atomic/molecular level toward improving their performance, which would provide significant inspiration for the design and structural regulation of other heterogeneous catalysts.

Abstract:Covalent organic frameworks (COFs) are at the forefront of porous material research due to their crystallinity and topological diversity. However, most COFs are connected by reversible chemical bonds, which limit their applications under harsh conditions. Herein, we develop a novel synthetic method to lock the imine bond using amino groups via a precursor-involved cascade reaction. We experimentally demonstrated that the nucleation process of COFs can be controlled by precursor hydrolysis. A family of crystalline two-dimensional tribenzimidazole-based COFs (2D BI-COFs) was prepared by the condensation of o-phenylenediamine derivative and aryl aldehydes. Their structures were confirmed by powder X-ray diffraction, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, and solid-state 13C cross-polarization magic angle spinning nuclear magnetic resonance (CP/MAS NMR) spectroscopy. They showed high surface areas, good CO2 uptake capacities, excellent CO2/N2 selectivities, and high chemical stabilities. Of these materials, BI-COF-1 was an efficient photocatalyst for the visible-light-driven photocatalytic oxidation of sulfides, which displayed high conversion (∼100%) and excellent selectivity (>90%). We believe that our study can provide new insights into the synthesis of 2D chemical-stable COFs.

Abstract:Covalent Organic Frameworks (COFs) are an exciting new class of microporous polymers with unprecedented properties in organic material chemistry. They are generally built from rigid, geometrically defined organic building blocks resulting in robust, covalently bonded crystalline networks that extend in two or three dimensions. By strategically combining monomers with specific structures and properties, synthesized COF materials can be fine-tuned and controlled at the atomic level, with unparalleled precision on intrapore chemical environment; moreover, the unusually high pore accessibility allows for easy post-synthetic pore wall modification after the COF is synthesized. Overall, COFs combine high, permanent porosity and surface area with high thermal and chemical stability, crystallinity and customizability, making them ideal candidates for a myriad of promising new solutions in a vast number of scientific fields, with widely varying applications such as gas adsorption and storage, pollutant removal, degradation and separation, advanced filtration, heterogeneous catalysis, chemical sensing, biomedical applications, energy storage and production and a vast array of optoelectronic solutions. This review attempts to give a brief insight on COF history, the overall strategies and techniques for rational COF synthesis and post-synthetic functionalization, as well as a glance at the exponentially growing field of COF research, summarizing their main properties and introducing the numerous technological and industrial state of the art applications, with noteworthy examples found in the literature.

Abstract:As typical representative of porous crystalline polymers, covalent organic frameworks (COFs) based on dynamic covalent chemistry and topological design are constructed with organic units via covalent bond. Their unique properties such as high stability, accessible functionality, ordered porosity, and pre-designable structure make COFs highly promising in environmental analysis. This review highlights the state-of-the-art design and modification of COFs in terms of functionality, stability and pore to meet the requirements of environmental analysis, as well as the mechanism and application of the COFs for the adsorption/removal, separation and sensing of various environmental contaminants. In addition, the challenge and future direction of COFs in environmental analysis are outlooked for the further research.

Abstract:Covalent organic frameworks (COFs) are an emerging class of nano-crystalline polymers known for their outstanding chemical stability, exceptionally high surface area, and highly ordered structures, making them ideal candidates for gas capture applications. In particular, the two imine-linked FM-COFs possess a versatile, microporous architecture integrated with nitrogen-rich heteroatoms. These heteroatoms are evenly distributed throughout the structure, from the walls to the linkers, enhancing gas interaction and improving adsorption efficiency. Owing to these advantages, FM-COFs demonstrated a carbon dioxide capacity of 82.6 cm3 g−1 at 273 K and an iodine uptake of 3.98 g g−1 at 350 K. The synergistic effect of microporosity and heteroatom functionality makes these COFs highly effective for selective gas adsorption and radioactive iodine uptake.

Abstract:The development of covalent organic frameworks (COFs) with nodes and spacers, designed to maximize their functional properties, is a challenge. Triazines exhibit better electron affinity than benzene-based aromatic rings; therefore, structures based on 1,3,5-substituted triazine-centered nodes are more stable than those from 1,3,5-benzene-linked COFs. Compared to COFs prepared from flat, rigid sp2 carbon-linked triazine nodes, the O-linked flexible tripodal triazine-based COF demonstrates several unpredictable properties such as an increase in crystallinity and cavity size. In this study, the COF prepared from O-linked flexible 2,4,6-tris(p-formylphenoxy)-1,3,5-triazine serves as an excellent absorbent for removing methylene blue from water. Our results demonstrate that COF is highly stable in water and functions as a robust adsorbent. Its adsorption isotherm is consistent with the Langmuir model and its adsorption kinetics follows a pseudo-second order model. Moreover, the COF was characterized using elemental analysis, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis, scanning electron microscopy, solid-state ultraviolet–visible spectroscopy, and X-ray diffraction. It exhibited permanent porosity, a high specific surface area (279.5 m2·g–1), and was chemically and thermally stable. Photophysical studies revealed that the COF exhibits a low bandgap energy value of 3.07 eV, indicating its semiconducting nature.

Abstract:Covalent Organic Frameworks (COFs) are porous crystalline polymers put together by linking light elements such as Carbon, Boron, Oxygen and Silicon through strong covalent bonds that are positioned in 2D or 3D topology. Porous organic materials, exhibit unique features and therefore, they can potentially be used in diverse applications such as catalyst, molecular sensing, drug delivery, gas storage, etc. The first reports on metal organic frameworks (MOFs) and covalent organic frameworks (COFs) were published by Yaghi and co-workers in 2005 and after that, these structures have attracted intensive interest from researchers due to their unique properties such as high surface area, low density, high thermal and chemical stability, uniformity and high porosity, and thousands of new frameworks have since been synthesized. This review describes the latest developments in the design, synthesis, and application of COFs in gas storage, catalyst, adsorption, enrichment and purification of small molecules, optoelectricity, molecular sensing, drug delivery, conductive membrane, novel coatings and energy storage. Also we really hope that this review will arouse more scholars' attention to the industrialization of COFs.

Abstract:Linking supramolecular organic cages with triple‐symmetric organic connectors, covalent organic frameworks (COFs) are successfully constructed. Obvious enhancement in iodine uptake up to 14 times higher than that of the solid packed by the cage itself is achieved, demonstrating that extending the close‐packed supramolecular organic cages into crystalline porous frameworks can be employed for targeted applications. In order to overcome the limitations of supramolecular organic cages for their incomplete accessibility of active sites in the solid state and uneasy recyclability in liquid solution, herein a nitrogen‐rich organic cage is rationally linked into framework systems and four isoreticular covalent organic frameworks (COFs), that is, Cage‐TFB‐COF, Cage‐NTBA‐COF, Cage‐TFPB‐COF, and Cage‐TFPT‐COF, are successfully synthesized. Structure determination reveals that they are all high‐quality crystalline materials derived from the eclipsed packing of related isoreticular two‐dimensional frameworks. Since the nitrogen‐rich sites usually have a high affinity toward iodine species, iodine adsorption investigations are carried out and the results show that all of them display an enhancement in iodine adsorption capacities. Especially, Cage‐NTBA‐COF exhibits an iodine adsorption capacity of 304 wt%, 14‐fold higher than the solid sample packed from the cage itself. The strong interactions between the nitrogen‐rich sites and the adsorbed iodine species are revealed by spectral analyses. This work demonstrates that, utilizing the reticular chemistry strategy to extend the close‐packed supramolecular organic cages into crystalline porous framework solids, their inherent properties can be greatly exploited for targeted applications.

Exploration of iodine adsorption performance of pyrene-based two-dimensional covalent organic frameworks

Abstract:Radioiodine (mainly 129I and 131I) is known to be dangerous nuclear waste due to its high toxicity, fast mobility and long radioactive half-life. As an emerging class of novel porous organic polymers, covalent organic frameworks (COFs) have demonstrated tremendous application potential in the field of radioactive iodine capture because of their high specific surface area and tunable pore structure. Herein, three π-conjugated pyrene-based COFs, namely PyTTA-BPDA-COF, PyTTA-BPY-COF, and PyTTA-BT-COF, have been successfully prepared and used as highly efficient adsorbents for iodine capture. The experimental results show that the three COFs displayed excellent adsorption performance, with adsorption capacity of 5.03, 4.46, and 3.97 g g-1 for PyTTA-BPDA-COF, PyTTA-BPY-COF, and PyTTA-BT-COF, respectively. Additionally, the release rate of iodine-loaded COFs in methanol solution and recyclability were also impressive, demonstrating their potential for practical applications. The mechanism investigation reveals that both imine linkage and π-conjugated structure of the COFs may contribute to their high iodine adsorption capability. This work is instructive as a guide for designing and synthesizing COFs as a solid-phase adsorbent for iodine uptake.
