Abstract:Covalent organic frameworks (COFs) are a new class of crystalline porous materials obtained from covalently attached organic building units. By virtue of the unique characteristics such as periodic and well-defined structures, low-density, high surface area, excellent stability as well as desired semiconductor-like behavior, COFs have gained tremendous attention for functional applications in many fields, especially in photocatalysis. In this review, we summarize the different methods for the synthesis of COFs, such as solvothermal synthesis, microwave synthesis, ionothermal synthesis, room temperature solution synthesis, mechanochemical synthesis and interfacial synthesis firstly. Then, the structural features of COFs including diversity, tailorability, stability and porosity are provided. Afterwards, the fundamentals and advantages of COFs for photocatalysis are briefly introduced. Following this, the photocatalytic applications of COF-based materials toward H2 production, CO2 reduction, organic transformation and pollution degradation are discussed. Meanwhile, a series of strategies are highlighted to improve photocatalytic performance for the understanding of the structure-property relationship in this part. Finally, the remaining challenges and prospects on further development of efficient COF-based photocatalysts are indicated.

Abstract:<section class="article-section__content">Covalent organic frameworks (COFs) are a class of crystalline porous materials which contain organic build blocks linked via covalent bonds to form ordered and periodic structures. In recent years, 2D COFs have been developed as promising heterogeneous photocatalysts due to their extended π-conjugated skeletons, high surface area, tunable structure, regular pore structure, and high crystallinity. Herein, recent advances in the design and synthesis of 2D COFs for photocatalysts are surveyed, the illustration of the structural features and synthetic strategy is focused on, and the relationship between the construction and property of 2D COFs for photocatalytic water splitting, CO2 reduction, organic transformation, and degradation of organic pollutants is elucidated. This overview is expected to provide clues to rational design and synthesis of ultra-stable, high crystalline, and high-performance 2D COFs for photocatalytic applications. </section>

Abstract:Abstract Covalent organic frameworks (COFs), newly developed materials, exhibit considerable promise in the field of catalysis. COFs exhibit captivating catalytic characteristics, including thermal and chemical stability, customizable porosities, and the ability to place active sites flexibly with tunable functions. To establish a connection between structure and activity, this paper provides a thorough justification of the planned creation of covalent organic frameworks for photocatalysis, encompassing H 2 production, carbon dioxide reduction, pollutants reduction and transformation of organic substances. We have investigated the catalytic sites that are active within covalent organic frameworks, encompassing the metals, molecular catalysts, and catalyst with single atom (SACs); the reactive skeleton/linkages; and the reactive pendant groups. This exploration aims to establish the benefits of using COF‐based catalysts compared to traditional catalysts. Despite the new advantages, numerous difficulties have also been noted with regard to the future. The objective of this review is to make it easier to design COF‐based composite materials for practical uses.

Abstract:Photocatalysis powered by unlimited solar energy is an effective strategy to resolve energy and environmental issues. To achieve an efficient photocatalytic system, photocatalysts need to be highly crystalline and porous with excellent photostability under extreme conditions. In this case, covalent organic frameworks (COFs) have shown immense potential for photocatalytic applications owing to their unique structure as well as electronic and photophysical characteristics. COFs possess a crystalline porous network with light absorption capabilities and excellent stability. Furthermore, functionalized COFs can be developed through organic unit variation to obtain broader absorption, narrow bandgap, effective charge separation, and transportation. Furthermore, high photocatalytic efficiency can be achieved via the formation of heterostructures through anchoring or post-synthetic modification. Our review is focused on the recent advancements in COFs as photocatalysts for various photocatalytic applications. Initially, we emphasize the topological design, linkage chemistry, and functionalization of COFs, underscoring the principles and requirements for high photocatalytic efficiency. This provides deep insights into the capabilities of COFs in different photocatalytic applications, covering areas such as hydrogen and oxygen evolution, carbon dioxide reduction, organic transformation, and organic pollutant degradation. Finally, we summarize the pivotal points that need urgent attention and outline future avenues, offering fresh perspectives and contributing to revolutionary innovations in this rapidly evolving field.

Abstract:AbstractPhotocatalysts are essential in photoenergy transduction systems, and their promising use for photocatalytic hydrogen evolution from water has been intensively studied for decades. Covalent organic frameworks (COFs) are emerging crystalline materials that are featured with highly ordered skeletons with intrinsic uniform pores, conferring a predesignable platform for exploring novel photocatalysts. In this review, the rapid progress of two‐dimensional (2D) COFs on visible photocatalytic H2 production from water is delineated. This review summarizes the design principles of building blocks, linkages, and reactions for constructing photocatalytic active 2D COFs with desirable electronic properties. This review introduces different strategies for enhancing photocatalytic performances by extending π‐conjugation, establishing donor–acceptor (D–A) configuration, functionalizing layered structures, and incorporating heteroatoms, or metal complexes. This review details the unique synergy between 2D COFs and various functional materials, such as inorganic–organic semiconductors, emphasizing on the structure‐to‐performance relationship. This review further concludes with the current challenges and promising opportunities for developing COF‐based photocatalysts.

Abstract:As a subclass of porous framework materials, covalent organic frameworks (COFs) feature permanent porosity, long-range order, and rigid backbones, and offer an important material platform for addressing the issues of global energy and environmental crisis. Along with the rapid development of physics, chemistry, materials science, engineering, as well as their collaboration, this research area has witnessed a dramatic growth proceeding to wide applications including gas storage and separations, energy storage and conversion devices, drug delivery, chemical sensing, and photo/electrocatalysis. Specially, structural designability, large surface area, high porosity, and superior chemical stability make COFs ideal candidates for photocatalytic systems, and great achievement and progress have been made up to now. In this Review, the key advancements made in COF-based photocatalysis are thoroughly presented. We first highlight the design principles and strategies for COFs synthesis with a special focus on their potential for photocatalysis. Following this, various photocatalytic applications of COFs are presented, covering the topics of photocatalytic hydrogen evolution, photocatalytic oxygen evolution, carbon photocatalytic dioxide reduction, photocatalytic organic transformation, and other photocatalytic reactions. Finally, the key challenges to be addressed and future avenues to be pursued are outlined, aiming to yield novel insights and contribute to game-changing innovations in this emerging area.

Abstract:Covalent organic frameworks(COFs)are emerging photocatalysts for hydrogen evolution in water splitting in recent years.They offer a pre-designable platform to design tailor-made structures and chemically adjustable functionality in terms of photocatalysis.In this review,we summarize the recent striking progress of COF-based photocatalysts in design and synthesis.Firstly,different approaches to functionalizing building blocks,diversifying linkages,extending π-conjugation and establishing D-A conjugation are illustrated for enhancing photocatalytic activity.Next,post-modification of backbones and pores is detailed for emphasizing the synergistic catalytic uniqueness of COFs.Besides,the strategy of preparing COF-related composites with various semiconductors is outlined for optimizing the electronic properties.Finally,we conclude with the current challenges and promising opportunities for the exploration of new COF-based photocatalysts.

Abstract:Covalent organic frameworks (COFs) are a class of crystalline porous polymer that allows the atomically precise integration of organic units into extended structures with periodic skeletons and ordered nanopores. One important feature of COFs is that they are designable; that is, the geometry and dimensions of the building blocks can be controlled to direct the topological evolution of structural periodicity. The diversity of building blocks and covalent linkage topology schemes make COFs an emerging materials platform for structural control and functional design. Indeed, COF architectures offer confined molecular spaces for the interplay of photons, excitons, electrons, holes, ions and guest molecules, thereby exhibiting unique properties and functions. In this Review, we summarize the major progress in the field of COFs and recent achievements in developing new design principles and synthetic strategies. We highlight cutting-edge functional designs and identify fundamental issues that need to be addressed in conjunction with future research directions from chemistry, physics and materials perspectives.

Abstract:Covalent organic frameworks (COFs) have attracted great attention as pivotal photocatalysts for efficient CO2 photoreduction into value-added fuels, which hold great promise for simultaneously mitigating global warming and the energy crisis. However, the synthesis of COFs with a high crystalline state and hierarchically porous structure to boost CO2 photoreduction is still an enormous challenge and rarely reported, probably because of the great dependence upon monomers and rigorous preparation conditions. Herein, a series of functional kagome (kg m) topologic 2D COFs with high crystallinity and porosity were synthesized based on the condensation of 4,4 ',4 '',4 & tprime;-(ethene-1,1,2,2-tetrayl)tetraaniline (ETTA) and 2,2 '-bipyridyl-5,5 '-dialdehyde (Bpy-CHO) building units combined with a postmodification strategy, named ETTA-Bpy-COF-M (M = H, Fe, Co, Ni, or Cu). Stimulated by the unique kg m topologized framework with well-ordered hierarchical micropores and mesopores, abundant exposed atomic Co sites, and remarkable photoelectrical performance, ETTA-Bpy-COF-Co is used as a photocatalyst for catalyzing the CO2-to-CO photoconversion and exhibits a high CO yield rate (9398.14 mu mol g(-1) h(-1)), a large CO selectivity (92.73%), and good durability. Experimental and theoretical analyses demonstrated that the superior performance for CO2 photoreduction catalyzed by ETTA-Bpy-COF-Co was attributed to the desirable cooperative contribution of kg m topological structure with hexagonal and triangular pores as well as atomic Co active sites, which can promote the photoexcited charge carrier kinetics, enhance the CO2 adsorption and activation, as well as reduce the energy barriers of *COOH generation and CO desorption. This work opens a new way to enhance COF photosynthesis for CO2 reduction and offers precious insights into related studies in the future.

Abstract:To resolve the issues of environmental pollution and seek for sustainable clean fuels, many photocatalytic systems based on metal compounds and amorphous polymers have been studied over the past few years. However, applications of these photocatalytic systems were limited due to intrinsic drawbacks of the structures, which make the exploitation of new class of materials necessary. Recently, covalent organic frameworks (COFs) comprised of light elements, have attracted tremendous attention due to their excellent physiochemical properties. Specially, high crystallinity, good stability, intrinsic porosity and unique covalent linkages make COFs suitable for the application under harsh photocatalytic conditions. Predesigned structure of COFs provides a good platform for constructing diverse photocatalytic systems. Up to now, though the research on COFs and COFs-based photocatalysts is still in its infancy, great progress has been made especially in the H2 or O2 evolution, CO2 reduction, photocatalytic organic transformations, and elimination of organic pollutants. In this review, we focus on the developments in COFs-based photocatalytic materials and analyze the relationship between the predesigned COFs structures and their photocatalytic properties. Moreover, we elaborate the strategies for enhancing catalytic activities of COFs-based photocatalysts. Finally, the perspectives on new opportunities and challenges in the field are discussed.

Abstract:There has been a surge of interest in light-driven chemical transformations using organic photoredox catalysts, whereby a suitable energy alignment and efficient exciton migration are crucial for achieving high efficiency. We show here that covalent organic frameworks (COFs) offer the flexibility required to be ideal platforms for photocatalyst design, lending themselves to fine control over photoreactivity. To understand the factors that dictate photoreactivity, we explore a comparative study of a series of porous materials built with amine bonds with varied composition, crystallinity, and topology, in the efficiency of photogenerated reactive oxygen species. Combined spectroscopies, density functional theory calculations, and catalytic evaluations revealed an essential interplay among these parameters and the photoreactivity of the resulting materials. Beyond basic considerations, such as spectral absorption and crystallinity, the material's lattice symmetry has a significant impact on photoreactivity. We anticipate that the structure-performance relationships developed will provide a robust rule of thumb for designing COF-based photocatalysts.

Abstract:To date, two‐dimensional β‐ketoenamine‐linked covalent organic frameworks (COFs) have exhibited tremendous potential in visible light photocatalysis due to their broad absorption and favorable stability provided by the linkage. Here, with 1,3,5‐triformylphloroglucinol (Tp) as the stationary building block, various COFs can be constructed to address different challenges. To inspire state‐of‐the‐art advancements toward photocatalysis, in the Concept article, the rational design of β‐ketoenamine‐linked COFs is summarized. First, the dimension of engineering the linker is considered to improve the activity of the COFs. The photocatalysis could be extended by just the linker length or by the inserted functionalities in the other building block. Second, the other dimension of integrating cocatalysts like transition metals or 2,2,6,6‐tetramethylpiperidine‐N‐oxyl (TEMPO) with β‐ketoenamine‐linked COFs could further expand the potential in photocatalytic reactions. These prior accomplishments establish that the rational design of β‐ketoenamine‐linked COFs is instrumental in improving the photocatalytic activity, laying the foundation for future explorations.

Abstract:In the light of increasing energy demand and environmental pollution, it is urgently required to find a clean and renewable energy source. In these years, photocatalysis that uses solar energy for either fuel production, such as hydrogen evolution and hydrocarbon production, or environmental pollutant degradation, has shown great potential to achieve this goal. Among the various photocatalysts, covalent organic frameworks (COFs) are very attractive due to their excellent structural regularity, robust framework, inherent porosity and good activity. Thus, many studies have been carried out to investigate the photocatalytic performance of COFs and COF-based photocatalysts. In this critical review, the recent progress and advances of COF photocatalysts are thoroughly presented. Furthermore, diverse linkers between COF building blocks such as boron-containing connections and nitrogen-containing connections are summarised and compared. The morphologies of COFs and several commonly used strategies pertaining to photocatalytic activity are also discussed. Following this, the applications of COF-based photocatalysts are detailed including photocatalytic hydrogen evolution, CO2 conversion and degradation of environmental contaminants. Finally, a summary and perspective on the opportunities and challenges for the future development of COF and COF-based photocatalysts are given.

Abstract:Covalent organic frameworks (COFs), an emerging class of organic crystalline polymers with highly oriented structures and permanent porosity, can adopt 2D or 3D architectures depending on the different topological diagrams of the monomers. Notably, 2D COFs have particularly gained much attention due to the extraordinary merits of their extended in-plane π-conjugation and topologically ordered columnar π-arrays. These properties together with high crystallinity, large surface area, and tunable porosity distinguish 2D COFs as an ideal candidate for the fabrication of functional materials. Herein, this review surveys the recent research advances in 2D COFs with special emphasis on the preparation of 2D COF powders, single crystals, and thin films, as well as their advanced optical, electrical, and magnetic functionalities. Some challenging issues and potential research outlook for 2D COFs are also provided for promoting their development in terms of structure, synthesis, and functionalities.

Abstract:Covalent organic frameworks(COFs)are crystalline porous polymers constructed by the covalent linkage of building blocks in a predictable pattern.In 2005,Yaghi and co-workers addressed the topological design principles of COFs and synthesized the first example with hexagonal pore channels and layer-by-layer stacking structures.The advent and development of COFs over years have been providing a promising platform across scientific fields as well as opportunities of designing the state-of-art 2D architectures.Given the covalent linkages and organic components,both the chemical and thermal stability of COFs are improved significantly,and the mass density is much lower than the well-known metal-organic frameworks.Different from the amorphous porous organic materials,the long-range ordered structure of COFs can be pre-designed and tailored to realize the specific topological structures and pore properties.In recent years,extensive attention has been gained on COFs' chemistry including building units,topology structures,reaction types,polymerization methods and functional strategies.T hese studies have laid the foundation for the extension of COFs' applications such as gas storage/separation, catalysis, chemosensing,light harvesting,proton conduction and energy storage/transduction.Therefore,COFs not only exhibit the application value of porous organic materials,but also show great potential to challenge the bottlenecks of the emerging energy and environmental issues.In this review,we summarize the milestones in design and synthesis of COFs as well as the major progress achieved in applications,and further address their prospects and challenges in the future development.

Abstract:Covalent organic frameworks (COFs) have unique features, including intrinsic porosity, crystallinity, and tunability, making them desirable materials for diverse applications ranging from environmental remediation to energy harvesting. Among these applications, COFs are extensively studied for their photocatalytic hydrogen evolution by converting solar energy into clean and renewable fuel via water splitting. COFs have several advantages over conventional inorganic catalysts, such as tunable band structures, high surface areas, and low cost. However, the research in this field is still in the early stages, and COFs still face some challenges, such as low charge carrier mobility, high exciton binding energy, and poor stability. To overcome these challenges, various design strategies relying on a mechanistic approach have been developed to design and modify COFs for enhanced photocatalytic performance. These include extending the π-conjugation, incorporating heteroatoms or metal complexes, and donor–acceptor (D–A) configuration, which ultimately improves the light absorption charge separation of COFs. Additionally, blending COFs with other functional materials, such as inorganic-organic semiconductors, can create synergistic effects to boost photocatalytic activity. In this review, the design aspects of the fabrication of COFs as effective photocatalysts have been reported.

Abstract:Catalytic technologies are pivotal in enhancing energy efficiency, promoting clean energy production, and reducing energy consumption in the chemical industry. The pursuit of novel catalysts for renewable energy is a long-term goal for researchers. In this work, we synthesized three two-dimensional covalent organic frameworks (COFs) featuring electron-rich carbazole-based architectures and evaluated their catalytic performance in photocatalytic organic reactions and electrocatalytic oxygen reduction reactions (ORRs). Pyrene-functionalized COF, termed as FCTD-TAPy, demonstrated excellent photocatalytic performance for amino oxidation coupling and showed a remarkable preference for substrates with electron-withdrawing groups (up to >99% Conv. and >99% Sel). Furthermore, FCTD-TAPy favored a four-electron transfer pathway during the ORR and exhibited favorable reaction kinetics (51.07 mV/dec) and a high turnover frequency (0.011 s−1). In contrast, the ORR of benzothiadiazole-based FCTD-TABT favored a two-electron transfer pathway, which exhibited a maximum double-layer capacitance of 14.26 mF cm−2, a Tafel slope of 53.01 mV/dec, and a hydrogen peroxide generation rate of 70.3 mmol g−1 h−1. This work underscores the potential of carbazole-based COFs as advanced catalytic materials and offers new insights into the design of metal-free COFs for enhanced catalytic performance.

Abstract:Covalent organic frameworks (COFs) are crystalline networks with extended backbones cross-linked by covalent bonds. Due to the semiconductive properties and variable metal coordinating sites, along with the rapid development in linkage chemistry, the utilization of COFs in photocatalytic CO2RR has attracted many scientists' interests. In this Review, we summarize the latest research progress on variable COFs for photocatalytic CO2 reduction. In the first part, we present the development of COF linkages that have been used in CO2RR, and we discuss four mechanisms including COFs as intrinsic photocatalysts, COFs with photosensitive motifs as photocatalysts, metalated COF photocatalysts, and COFs with semiconductors as heterojunction photocatalysts. Then, we summarize the principles of structural designs including functional building units and stacking mode exchange. Finally, the outlook and challenges have been provided. This Review is intended to give some guidance on the design and synthesis of diverse COFs with different linkages, various structures, and divergent stacking modes for the efficient photoreduction of CO2.

Abstract:Covalent Organic Frameworks (COFs) are porous crystalline polymers put together by linking light elements such as Carbon, Boron, Oxygen and Silicon through strong covalent bonds that are positioned in 2D or 3D topology. Porous organic materials, exhibit unique features and therefore, they can potentially be used in diverse applications such as catalyst, molecular sensing, drug delivery, gas storage, etc. The first reports on metal organic frameworks (MOFs) and covalent organic frameworks (COFs) were published by Yaghi and co-workers in 2005 and after that, these structures have attracted intensive interest from researchers due to their unique properties such as high surface area, low density, high thermal and chemical stability, uniformity and high porosity, and thousands of new frameworks have since been synthesized. This review describes the latest developments in the design, synthesis, and application of COFs in gas storage, catalyst, adsorption, enrichment and purification of small molecules, optoelectricity, molecular sensing, drug delivery, conductive membrane, novel coatings and energy storage. Also we really hope that this review will arouse more scholars' attention to the industrialization of COFs.

Abstract:CARDIAC surgery is being increasingly described in artistic terms and theatrical metaphors. In a recent review by Boyle et al. heart surgery was reflected upon as a ‘Faustian bargain’ (1). Surgical research was compared to comic opera by Dr Horton in an editorial published in The Lancet (2). Professor Sir Magdi Yacoub, British Heart Professor of Cardiothoracic Surgery, has recently defined the task of cardiac surgery as the ‘science and art of applying a surgical speciality to the local and global community’ and has extended the analogy of comic opera regarding the scope, risks and outcome of cardiac surgery as ‘drama set to music, that could descend to farce’ (3). There is indeed something theatrical about the regular trilogue of a cardiac surgeon, perfusionist and anaesthetist at the scene of initiation of a bypass during open heart surgery. The sequence of . . .go on bypass . . . full flow . . .ventilation off . . . flow down . . . aortic cross clamp is on . . . is acted out on a thousand-scale world-wide every day in order to set into motion the ‘Faustian bargain’ of coronary revascularisation procedures: in order to re-establish blood flow to ischaemic areas of the heart, this organ (and others) has to endure severe stresses during the procedure (1). Not too surprisingly, the scenario of global myocardial ischaemia occurring with current preservation methods and utilization of cardiopulmonary bypass is associated with a spectrum of quite predictable and transient organ dysfunctions characterized by a degree of reduced contractility, regional wall motion abnormalities and ventricular and supraventricular arrhythmias. It is quite astonishing (and entertaining) to recognize the different anaesthetic attitudes towards these scenarios. There is certainly a group of anaesthetists who take a minimalist approach of wait and see, who do not apply preventive pharmacological protocols and only institute minimal treatment. They can be regarded as directors of the show, who know this is rarely a dramatic experience and that the show will run smoothly at the end. Most likely the majority of the readers of this editorial will belong to this group of anaesthetists. If you just returned from theatre or the intensive care unit knowing that your team has performed a technically good cardiac procedure and you left your patient in sinus rhythm with all the signs of good cardiac output without inotropic support, your attitude is quite justified regarding the self-limiting nature of this postischaemic transient dysfunction. However, not all patients follow this pattern of recovery following aortic cross clamping and bypass. These patients may be slow to re-warm, and might possibly exhibit mild metabolic acidosis. They may require low doses of inotropes and regular diuretics to maintain an adequate urine output. They may require pacing for slow sinus node activity or for the presence of variable conduction blocks and may require medical antiarrhythmic therapies for sustained and prolonged arrhythmias. This response may not be anticipated on an individual basis, is rarely fatal but slows the progress of the patient’s recovery and is usually attributed to ischaemiareperfusion injury or to an abnormal systemic inflammatory response to the surgery and the extracorporeal system. For these reasons there is a somewhat different company of anaesthetists, who are more pro-active in using preventive strategies and applying early treatment and are eager to learn more about the Acta Anaesthesiol Scand 2003; 47: 639—642 Copyright # Acta Anaesthesiol Scand 2003 Printed in Denmark.
