Abstract:Antibiotics as emerging pollutants have attracted extensive attention due to their ecotoxicity and persistence in the environment. Adsorption of antibiotics on carbon-based materials (CBMs) such as biochar and activated carbon was recognized as one of the most promising technologies for wastewater treatment. This study applied machine learning (ML) methods to develop generic prediction models of tetracycline (TC) and sulfamethoxazole (SMX) adsorption on CBMs. The results suggested that random forest outperformed gradient boosting trees and artificial neural network for both TC and SMX adsorption models. The random forest models could accurately predict the adsorption capacity of antibiotics on CBMs using material properties and adsorption conditions as model inputs. The developed ML models presented better generalization ability than traditional isotherm models under variable environmental conditions (e.g., temperature, solution pH) and adsorbent types. The relative importance analysis and partial dependence plots based on ML models were performed to compare TC and SMX adsorption on CBMs. The results indicated the critical role of specific surface area for both TC (24%) and SMX (45%) adsorption, while the other material properties (e.g., H/C, (O + N)/C, pH(pzc)) showed variable influences due to the differences in molecular structures, functional groups, and pKa values of TC and SMX. The accurate ML prediction models with generalization ability are useful for designing efficient CBMs with minimal experimental screening, while the relative importance and partial dependence plot analysis can guide rational applications of CBMs for antibiotics wastewater treatment.

Abstract:Ground granulated blast furnace slag (GGBS) is a primary industrial waste product of iron production, and its improper disposal has been a serious environmental problem. This study aims to modify the GGBS using oxalic acid (GGBS-Ox) for the adsorption of tetracycline (TC) from an aqueous solution. GGBS-Ox was synthesized and characterized via FTIR, XRD SEM, XPS, BET, and DLS. The effects of process parameters, involving initial solution pH, stirring speed, and contact time, are evaluated by utilizing response surface methodology (RSM), artificial neural network (ANN), and random forest (RF) based models. The experimental results indicate that the removal efficiency of TC is significantly affected by the initial pH of the solution. The RSM, ANN, and RF models accurately simulated the experimental data, as indicated by the high coefficient of determination (R2), which was 0.98, 0.95, and 0.98, respectively. Additionally, kinetics, isotherm, and thermodynamic models were evaluated for the adsorption of TC onto GGBS-Ox. The findings of this study demonstrated the utilization of GGBS-Ox as an efficient and sustainable adsorbent for the treatment of TC and can be considered as a potential adsorbent for wastewater treatment.

Abstract:Artificial Neural Networks (ANNs) model and Adaptive Neuro-Fuzzy Inference System (ANFIS) were used to estimate and predict the removal efficiency of tetracycline (TC) using the adsorption process from aqueous solutions. The obtained results demonstrated that the optimum condition for removal efficiency of TC were 1.5 g L−1 modified zeolite (MZ), pH of 8.0, initial TC concentration of 10.0 mg L−1, and reaction time of 60 min. Among the different back-propagation algorithms, the Marquardt–Levenberg learning algorithm was selected for ANN Model. The log sigmoid transfer function (log sig) at the hidden layer with ten neurons in the first layer and a linear transfer function were used for prediction of the removal efficiency. Accordingly, a correlation coefficient, mean square error, and absolute error percentage of 0.9331, 0.0017, and 0.56% were obtained for the total dataset, respectively. Abstract:The current study investigates removing tetracycline from water using batch, column, and tank experiments with statistical modelling using ANN for continuous tests. An artificial neural network (ANN) using the Levenberg-Marquardt back-propagation (LMA) training algorithm is constructed to compare the effectiveness of Tetracycline removal from aqueous solution using the sorption technique with prepared adsorbent. Several characterization analyses XRD, FT-IR, and SEM are employed for prepared Brownmillerite (Ca 2 Fe 2 O 5 )–Na alginate beads. The operating conditions of batch tests involved, contact time (0.1–3 h), initial of tetracycline (C o ) of (100–250 mg/L), pH (3–12), agitation speed (50–250) rpm and dosage of adsorbent (0.2–1.2 g/50 mL). The outcomes of experiments have demonstrated that the optimum conditions for the batch test to achieve the maximum adsorbent capacity (q max =7.845 mg/g) are achieved at pH 7, contact time 1.5 h, adsorbent dose 1.2 g/50 mL, agitation speed of 200 rpm, and initial concentration of TC 100 mg/L. Minimum mean square error (MSE) values of 7.09E-04 for 30 hidden neurons and 0.0029 for 59 hidden neurons in the 1D and 2D systems are accomplished, respectively. The artificial neural network model has exhibited excellent performance with correlation coefficients exceeding 0.980 for the operating variables, demonstrating its accuracy and effectiveness in predicting the experimental outcomes. According to sensitivity analysis, the influential parameter in the column test (1D) is the flow rate (mL/min), with a relative importance of 32.769%. However, in the tank test (2D), time (day) is signified as an influential parameter with a relative importance of 31.207%.

Abstract:Herein, the association between the dynamic adsorption capacity of toluene and several important characteristic values on activated carbon (AC) samples was investigated by multidimensional linear regression. Among the characteristic values, the carbon tetrachloride (CTC) adsorption value has demonstrated relatively stronger correlation with the toluene adsorption capacity on AC samples with diverse sources and forms, particularly in exposure to high-concentration toluene. Notably, the relevance of the toluene adsorption capacity to the CTC value could also be extended to a series of other porous adsorbents, which proved the wide applicability of CTC value in characterizing the adsorption behaviors. Based on these results, a mathematical and visual model was then established to predict the toluene adsorption saturation under different conditions (inlet concentration, adsorption time, initial CTC value, etc.) on diverse AC samples, of which the accuracy has later been verified by experimental data. As such, a fast and accurate estimation of the adsorption behaviors over AC samples, and possibly other porous adsorbents, was realized.

Abstract:SUMMARY: A turbidimetric assay is described for antibiotic substances produced by Acetobacter acetigenum, NCIB 8132, and Bacterium xylinoides, NCIB 4940, based on the amount of inhibition of growth of a celluloseless mutant. Yield of antibiotic from each organism was independent of the source of nitrogen in the medium, but varied markedly with the carbon source and was highest when the organisms were grown for 10 days at 30° in a medium containing glucose (9%, w/v), Difco yeast-extract (0·5%, w/v) and peptone (Evans, 3%, w/v), in distilled water. Under these conditions growth of the assay organism was inhibited 50% by filtrate diluted 1/44. The antibiotics were extremely alkali-labile being destroyed at 18° in 2 min. at pH 10. Activity of the filtrate from organism NCIB 8132 was not affected significantly by treatment with calcium carbonate, charcoal, cation- or anion-exchange resins, but was decreased by extraction at pH 3·0 with n-butanol, chloroform or methyl ethyl ketone. Activity of filtrate of organism NCIB 4940 was decreased by treatment with charcoal, cation- or anion-exchange resins and by extraction at pH 3·0 with benzene, n-butanol, chloroform, diethyl ether, ethyl acetate or methyl ethyl ketone.

Abstract:The abuse of antibiotics causes serious environmental pollution, whose removal has become a hot topic. The adsorption of tetracycline (TC) on a prepared polycationic straw (MMS) was investigated. The kinetic, thermodynamic and adsorption isotherm models showed that adsorption of TC by MMS was a spontaneous, monolayer reaction with coexistence of physical and chemical process. Density functional theory indicated that the adsorption of TC resulted from electrostatic interaction and hydrogen bonds, which proved the mechanism of TC by macromolecular biomass for the first time. The expected and empirical values of TC adsorption showed a high fit degree, through predication of machine learning, indicating the feasibility and avoiding lots of experiments. Further, the adsorption ability of MMS to other TCs was predicted, founding that the highest removal efficiency was doxycycline, which provides a novel strategy for removal of other pollution and reduce of economic and time cost in practical application.

Abstract:Tetracycline is the second most widely used antibiotic, and its presence in wastewater is increasing with the increasing use of TC, which is of global concern. For the removal of TC from wastewater, magnetic activated carbon (MAC) was produced from activated carbon obtained using potassium-rich wine stones in previous studies. In this study, MAC synthesis was carried out in order to obtain a cost-effective, environmentally friendly, and high-quality adsorbent for TC adsorption using the activated carbon (AC) obtained in the previous study. In the production process of MAC, chemical precipitation and hydrothermal methods were used together. To produce MAC, FeCl 2 .4H 2 O and FeCl 3 .6H 2 O solutions were mixed with AC in a 1/2 w/w ratio. Tetracycline (TC) adsorption of both MAC and AC investigated the physicochemical properties with the help of analyses such as BET, SEM, EDX, FTIR, VSM, and pH at point eo charge (pH ZPC ). Pseudo-first-order model and pseudo-second-order model kinetic models and Langmui, Freundlich, Temkin, and Dubinin–Radushkevich kinetic isotherms were investigated for TC adsorption of MAC and AC. With an R 2 value of 0.9895, it was concluded that the Langmuir isotherm is the most suitable adsorption, which indicates that the adsorption is monolayer; 3 desorption studies were performed for both TC and MAC. It was observed that MAC had better desorption capacity in the results obtained. According to the results obtained, MAC was tested to show higher TC adsorption, although it has a lower surface area than AC, which is 1086.45 m 2 /g and 1814.16 m 2 /g, respectively. However, the average pore diameter of MAC was 4.009 nm, while that of AC was 2.2483 nm. The reason for this is thought to be that magnetite clogs the pores on the surface of the AC, reducing the surface area but increasing the active sites, resulting in better adsorption. These results indicate that the obtained MAC is an environmentally friendly and cost-effective magnetic adsorbent for TC removal.

Abstract:Background The present study employs the Juglans Regia , a natural adsorbent, to investigate its efficiency in methylene blue (MB) removal from aqueous solutions. Advanced techniques like Artificial Neural Networks (ANN) and Response Surface Methodologies (RSM) are applied to model and predict the adsorptive behaviour of MB using Juglans Regia adsorbent. Different characterization techniques are utilised to understand the morphology and structure of the catalyst to provide insights into its potential adsorption capabilities. Methods The study uses ANN and RSM for predictive modelling, enabling a comprehensive comparison of their effectiveness in describing MB adsorption onto Juglans Regia . Kinetic analysis employing pseudo-2nd order kinetics and isotherm studies based on the Langmuir isotherm model are conducted to understand the kinetics and equilibrium behaviour of the adsorption process. The thermodynamics of the adsorption process are investigated to ascertain the spontaneity and exothermic nature of MB dye removal by Juglans Regia . Significant Findings Both ANN and RSM models are predicted the high adsorption efficiency, reaching up to 94.6 and 93.2 %, demonstrating the effectiveness of Juglans Regia as an adsorbent for MB removal. RSM and ANN models are strongly associated with R 2 values of 0.9117 and 0.9373, respectively. Low Root mean square error (RMSE) and Hybrid fractional error function (HYBRID) computed error function values revealed good agreement between experimental results and model predictions. The study successfully validates the optimization process, leading to the maximum predicted adsorption efficiency values, and providing insights into optimal conditions for efficient MB removal. Thermodynamic analysis confirms that the adsorption process is exothermic and spontaneous, further supporting the potential of Juglans Regia in wastewater remediation of organic pollutants. Abstract:"In this paper we examine measures of population aging in China from 1953 to 1982, and then project population aging to the year 2050 using a cohort-components methodology.... Results indicate that China's population will age at an unprecedented rate over the next 70 years, both in terms of the absolute size of the elderly population and their proportion of the total population. At least 50 percent of the projected increase in population aging in China between 1980 and 2050 will be a product of the momentum for aging that is already built into the present age structure and vital rates. However, prospective trends in the measures of population aging become increasingly more sensitive to varying assumptions about fertility and mortality with time, and as older age groups are considered."

Abstract:Porous carbon is commonly used in the effective removal of antibiotics from water. The geometry of nanopores plays a vital role in determining the adsorption properties of porous carbon. Aiming to reveal the adsorption mechanism and the dependence on the porous geometry, the mass transfer and adsorption performance of tetracycline (TC) in various shaped carbon nanopores was observed in this study by molecular dynamics (MD) simulation. The results show that the molecular diffusion of water and TC in nanopores is confined than that in bulk solution. The mass transfer in cylindrical through pores (THC) is more efficient than that in blind pores. The accumulated presence probability of TCs within the nanopore of THC is over twice as high as in the blind nanopores. THC exhibits the best adsorption rate and capacity in this study, and the adsorption ability of the blind nannopores follows the order BHC-Cy (cylindrical blind pore) > BHC-Co (conical blind pore) > BHC-Sp (spherical blind pore). Both the cylindrical and bottom surface in BHC-Cy are effective adsorption sites, while the adsorption is seldom found in the bottoms of BHC-Co and BHC-Sp. Surface diffusion of adsorbed TC molecules along the carbon surface was investigated. The sphere-shaped blind pore was found unfavorable for the adsorption of TC from water.

Abstract:Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is on an upsurge as more and more broad-spectrum antibiotics are being used haphazardly, resulting in imbalances in the ecosystem and disrupting common/systematic clinical protocols. To combat this issue, metal-organic framework embedded zinc-copper-benzenedicarboxylate@calcium alginate composite beads (Zn-Cu-BDC@CA CBs) were synthesized and utilized for the adsorption of tetracycline (TC) from water. The surface morphology, presence of functional groups, surface area, and thermal stability of Zn-Cu-BDC@CA CBs were evaluated by field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET), and thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA), respectively. Batch adsorption experiments were also carried out to optimize the adsorption performance of Zn-Cu-BDC@CA CBs for TC by adjusting the key parameters, including pH of the solution, contact time, adsorbent dosage, temperature, and initial concentration of TC. From the RSM model, 96.8% removal of TC takes place under the optimum conditions (pH = 7.3, mass = 17.2 mg, concentration = 21.3 ppm, time = 3.4 h, and temperature = 31.8 °C), which aligns closely with the experimental batch study, where the addition of 20 mg of adsorbent to a 20 mL TC solution (20 mg/L) at a pH of 7 and a temperature of 27 °C yielded an impressive TC removal efficiency of 96.55% within 180 min. Zn-Cu-BDC@CA CBs possess homogeneous adsorption surfaces, and TC is adsorbed via monolayer chemisorption, according to the results derived from the Langmuir isotherm model and pseudo-second-order kinetic model. The thermodynamic analysis indicated that the adsorption process is both endothermic and spontaneous. In their entirety, the synthesized Zn-Cu-BDC@CA CBs exhibit certain operational advantages, such as simple separation, satisfactory adsorption performance, and decent recyclability, indicating their viability for industrial application of elimination of TC residues from aquatic environments.

Abstract:With the rapid development in nanotechnology, the preparation of novel self-assembled nanoscale composite materials and their numerous environmental applications have become a promising area of research among the environmental scientists. In view of above, the present study aims at fabrication of a mesoporous nanoscale material of calcium ferrite-zirconium oxide-magnetic nanocomposite (CF-ZrO-MNC) to explore its application in adsorption-driven remediation process of tetracycline (TC). The characterisation study of the so-prepared CF-ZrO-MNC has revealed the presence of 0.1213 cc/g of mesoporous volume with a specific surface area of 95.32 m2/g. A comparative study performed between CF-ZrO-MNC, CaFe2O4 and ZrO2 nanoparticles has proven the superior adsorption capability of CF-ZrO-MNC for TC over the pure phases of parent CaFe2O4 and ZrO2 nanoparticles. The optimisation of TC adsorption process was performed by response surface methodology, which has revealed that 98.14% of TC removal can be obtained within 60 min of contact time using 4.0 g/L of CF-ZrO-MNC dose with 40.0 mg/L of TC concentration at solution pH 6.0. The kinetic and isotherm studies have presented pseudo-second-order kinetic and Freundlich isotherm model as the best-fitted models, respectively. The results of Langmuir isotherm model fitting indicated that CF-ZrO-MNC poses 92.59 mg/g of maximum TC adsorption capacity which has been proven to be highly effective as compared to previously reported adsorbents for the remediation of TC from aqueous media.

Acute myeloid leukemia with cryptic CBFB-MYH 11 type D

Abstract:A 77 year-old female was found with FAB M4Eo acute myeloid leukemia. Although CBFB-MYH11 mRNA was detected in RT-PCR, the conventional cytogenetic analysis failed to reveal inv(16). Fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) and the sequence analysis revealed a fusion between the exon 5 of CBFB and the exon 8 of MYH11, resulting in a minor variant fusion product previously reported as type D. In order to detect the cryptic inv(16) type D, both FISH and RT-PCR are required, and furthermore, the primers for the sequence analysis needs to be selected for the proper diagnosis.
Effectively removing tetracycline from water by nanoarchitectured carbons derived from CO2: Structure and surface chemistry influence

Abstract:Understanding of the correlation between physico-chemical property of adsorbent and the adsorption performance of contaminant is very significant for developing high-efficient materials to remove antibiotic contamination from water. In this work, a novel kind of carbon adsorbent (EC) derived from CO2 and activated ECs with modified structure via a facile chemical method using H2 and KOH were prepared. The synthetic carbon materials (EC, EC-H2, and EC-KOH) were then applied to remove tetracycline (TC). The kinetics of adsorption for these three carbon materials all well fitted the pseudo-second-order kinetic model. The experimental data of adsorption isotherm had good compatibility with Langmuir and Freundlich models (R2 > 0.90), but the Temkin model was the most applicable for all adsorbents (R2 > 0.98). A super-high adsorption capacity of EC-KOH obtained from Langmuir fitting was 933.56 mg g−1, which was much higher than that of EC-H2 (538.91 mg g−1) and EC (423.30 mg g−1), possibly due to its larger specific surface area (SBET), pore volume, and specific surface chemical structure. Moreover, it was found that surface functional groups and large aperture of adsorbents had a positive effect on adsorption rate. More adsorption sites and surface functional groups of adsorbents were beneficial to enhance the adsorption affinity. These results are of great benefit to the directional control of carbon structure to increase the adsorption performance in rate, capacity, and affinity of antibiotics.

Abstract:With the abuse of tetracycline antibiotics and their high detection rate in the water environment, causing non-negligible environmental hazards and health risks, the treatment of tetracycline wastewater has been paid much attention. Herein, a noval magnetic adsorbent, nitrilotriacetic acid-modified magnetic chitosan microspheres (NDMCMs) was successfully prepared and applied to remove tetracycline antibiotics (TC) from wastewater. The results found that the solution pH and ion strength greatly affected the adsorption capacity of TC by NDMCMs. Additionally, the adsorption capacity of NDMCMs (373.5 mg g−1) was four times higher than that of MCMs (92 mg g−1) at pH 8.0, attributed to the various amino and carboxyl groups in the grafted chain. The experiment data were better correlated with the Freundlich isotherm model and the pseudo-second-order kinetic model, indicating that the adsorption between TC and adsorbent surfaces occurred as multilayer adsorption, and the chemical interaction played as a rate-limiting step in the adsorption process. The thermodynamic parameter calculation results demonstrated that the adsorption of TC by NDMCMs followed a spontaneous, endothermic, and orderly process. Besides, the regeneration performance of NDMCMs showed that it is fully qualified for practical application of TC adsorption. The adsorption mechanism proposed by the FT-IR spectroscopic analysis of the adsorbent before and after the adsorption of TC was mainly through π-π interaction, cation-π bond, hydrogen bond, and amidation reaction. Based on all experimental results, NDMCMs is an efficient and sustainable magnetic adsorbent, which can be used to remove TC from wastewater.

Abstract:Hierarchically porous carbons (HPCs) have been shown to be effective adsorbents for removing emerging pollutants such as antibiotics from water. To clarify the mechanisms of the transport and adsorption of antibiotics in multiscale pores of HPCs, molecular dynamics (MD) simulations are used to explore the adsorption of tetracycline (TC) on carbon adsorbents with various nanoporous geometries in this study. The layered cylindrical distribution patterns of the water molecules in nanopores are observed due to the strong interaction from the carbon surface, especially in the pores less than 3 nm in diameter. Relatively large pores (5 nm in diameter) of porous carbon are beneficial for the transport and adsorption of TCs in an aqueous solution. In the nanopores of HPCs, TC molecules tend to be trapped by the micropores located in the inner walls of mesopores, and then preferentially distribute near the edge of the pores. A faster adsorption rate and higher adsorption capacity of HPC are achieved compared with those of mesoporous carbon, which is in accordance with the experimental results. The micro/mesoporous geometry of HPC encourages the TC molecules to interact with the carbon surface and results in superior adsorption performance.
Machine learning for the adsorptive removal of ciprofloxacin using sugarcane bagasse as a low-cost biosorbent: comparison of analytic, mechanistic, and neural network modeling

Abstract:Contamination with traces of pharmaceutical compounds, such as ciprofloxacin, has prompted interest in their removal via low-cost, efficient biomass-based adsorption. In this study, classical models, a mechanistic model, and a neural network model were evaluated for predicting ciprofloxacin breakthrough curves in both laboratory- and pilot scales. For the laboratory-scale (d = 2.2 cm, Co = 5 mg/L, Q = 7 mL/min, T = 18 °C) and pilot-scale (D = 4.4 cm, Co = 5 mg/L, Q = 28 mL/min, T = 18 °C) setups, the experimental adsorption capacities were 2.19 and 2.53 mg/g, respectively. The mechanistic model reproduced the breakthrough data with high accuracy on both scales (R2 > 0.4 and X2 < 0.15), and its fit was higher than conventional analytical models, namely the Clark, Modified Dose-Response, and Bohart-Adams models. The neural network model showed the highest level of agreement between predicted and experimental data with values of R2 = 0.993, X2 = 0.0032 (pilot-scale) and R2 = 0.986, X2 = 0.0022 (laboratory-scale). This study demonstrates that machine learning algorithms exhibit great potential for predicting the liquid adsorption of emerging pollutants in fixed bed.

Abstract:Teff ( Eragrostis tef ) is known as a staple grain crop which grown as edible seeds, remarkably in Ethiopia. However, after removal of its seeds, the hay obtained from this crop, are considered as agro-waste. Such a lignocellulosic agro-waste can be potentially exploited to prepare activated carbon to treat the harmful industrial effluents for detoxification. In this study, Teff hay (TH) was used as a precursor for preparing the activated carbon. The using H 2 SO 4 , chemical activation was carried out followed by carbonaceous process was undertaken to prepared activated carbon (AC) by pyrolysis. The prepared AC was modified as magnetized AC and characterized by various characterization methods. Further, as a bio-absorbent, its potency for adsorptive removal of Cu(II) ions was ascertained. Notably, the most studied and important process factors for adsorption, such as, initial concentration of metal ion, adsorbent dosage, pH, and contact time were subjected to optimization using response surface method (RSM). Further, to ensure the statistical optimization of aforementioned factors, the non-statistical techniques, genetic algorithm (GA) and artificial neural network (ANN) tools have been executed. In addition, the use of prepared Teff-hay based magnetized AC for the removal of Cu(II) by adsorption process was evaluated through different isotherms and kinetic approaches.
