Abstract:Short-term high-temperature pretreatment helps accelerate the composting process and improve compost product quality. The aim of this research was to clarify the role of high-temperature pretreatment compost (PHC) on soil and plant growth. We conducted an experiment in which PHC, traditional compost (PTC), and high-temperature pretreatment food waste (PFW) were used as organic amendments (OA). Each type of compost was mixed into purple soil at mass ratios of 3, 5, 10, and 20% to establish a soil–compost mixture; they were then used in pot experiments with Lolium perenne L. Plant growth-promoting effects were stronger in the three experimental groups with 10% OA than in groups with other mixing ratios ( p < 0.05 ). Plant growth-promoting effects were strongest in the experimental group with 10% PHC, and Lolium perenne L. biomass, the chlorophyll content, and plant height were 1.1–1.3 times higher in this group than in the PTC and PFW groups. Soil physicochemical analyses revealed that OA at various mixing ratios could enhance soil nutrient levels, the humification degree, and enzyme activity, and the strength of the positive effects increased with the mixing ratio. The most pronounced soil amendment effects were observed in the PHC group at all mixing ratios ( p < 0.05 ). Microbial analysis revealed that both the microbial diversity and relative abundances of unclassified_f_Rhizobiaceae and Terrimonas were significantly higher in the 10% PHC group than in the 10% PTC and PFW groups ( p < 0.01 ). Correlation analyses indicated that urease, peroxidase, and sucrase activities were positively correlated with plant growth indexes. The correlation coefficients of unclassified_f_Rhizobiaceae with urease and Terrimonas with peroxidase and sucrase were 0.997, 0.878, and 0.863, respectively. PHC can promote plant growth by altering the dominant microbial communities and enzyme activity in the soil. This study provides a theoretical basis for the application of high-temperature pretreated compost products.

[Improvement effects of quicklime and calcium magnesium phosphate fertilizer on acidified soil cultivating Codonopsis tangshen]

Abstract:To solve the problem of soil acidification in the cultivation of Codonopsis tangshen, laboratory experiments were carried out to investigate C. tangshen seed germination, seedling growth and soil exchangeable acid, microbial community structure after applying quicklime (QL) and calcium magnesium phosphate fertilizer (CMP). The results showed that QL and CMP treatments significantly improved the survival rate of C. tangshen seedlings from 147.7% to 326.7% and from 270.1% to 311.2%, respectively. The maximum increase rates of the height of C. tangshen seedlings were 516.7% and 546.3%, and that of root length were 798.0% and 679.2% in the treatments of QL and CMP, respectively. 1‰-4‰ QL or CMP treatments increased the relative chlorophyll content, antioxidant enzyme activity and the content of soluble protein of C. tangshen seedlings, decreased the content of malondialdehyde and superoxide anion radical of seedlings, increased soil pH by 0.88-2.02 units and 0.23-1.19 units, and decreased the exchangeable aluminum content in soil by 53.0%-95.3% and 17.6%-81.3%, respectively. Soil bacterial and actinomycetic abundances were significantly higher in 2‰-4‰ QL or CMP treatments than that in the control. Soil fungal abundance was significantly lower in the QL treatment of 2‰ and CMP treatment of 4‰. 1‰-4‰ QL or CMP treatments significantly increased fresh weight of C. tangshen tubers by 40.5%-78.5% and 28.4%-78.8%, respectively. In conclusion, the suitable quantity of QL and CMP for acidified soil (pH=4.12, ρb=1.15 g·cm-3, tillage layer=15 cm) amendment were 1.73-3.45 t·hm-2 and 3.45-6.90 t·hm-2, and QL and CMP amendment could fit the optimum soil pH (5.5-6.5) for the growth of C. tangshen seedlings.
Study on the effect of hydrothermal charcoal source modifier on saline-alkaline soil improvement

Abstract:Land salinization has become a global issue. To mitigate this issue, the modifiers and water-soluble fertilizers have emerged as a promising strategy to enhance soil nutrient content and promote crop production in saline soils. In this study, based on the hydrothermal method for preparing corn stalks derived biochar prepared modifiers and water-soluble fertilizers for using in soda saline-alkali soil. Through field microplot experiments, the separate and interactive effects of different concentrations of them were studied, as well as their influence on the growth of alfalfa and Leymus chinensis on saline-alkali soil. The combined application of modifiers and water-soluble fertilizers can effectively increase soil nutrient content and enzyme activity, significantly reducing soil pH and alkalinity. It was found that the optimal application rate of 20 g/kg of improver resulted in a 4.99% decrease in pH of soil and 11.23% decrease in alkalinity. Additionally, organic matter, available P2O5, NH4+-N, and NO3--N contents increased by 25.74%, 28.48%, 19.87%, and 32.90%, respectively. Soil enzyme activities generally peaked at 20 g/kg of modifiers and water-soluble fertilizers, with sucrase showing the most significant increases, with 31.14% for alfalfa and 25.52% for L. chinensis. Two-way ANOVA results demonstrated significant interaction effects between the modifiers and water-soluble fertilizer on pH, Ca2+ and Mg2+ content, quick-acting potassium content, soil sucrase and urease activity, biomass of soil and alfalfa leaf width. Moreover, planting alfalfa and L. chinensis indicated that combined use of modifies and fertilizer had a significant effect on promoting crop cultivation in saline-alkali soil. Our findings provided a robust theoretical groundwork for improving the management of saline soils and optimizing crop production in such challenging environments.

Abstract:Introduction: Soil salinization poses a worldwide challenge that hampers agricultural productivity. Methods: Employing high-throughput sequencing technology, we conducted an investigation to examine the impact of compost on the diversity of bacterial communities in saline soils. Our study focused on exploring the diversity of bacterial communities in the inter-root soil of plants following composting and the subsequent addition of compost to saline soils. Results: Compared to the initial composting stage, Alpha diversity results showed a greater diversity of bacteria during the rot stage. The germination index reaches 90% and the compost reaches maturity. The main bacterial genera in compost maturation stage are Flavobacterium , Saccharomonospora , Luteimonas and Streptomyces . Proteobacteria, Firmicutes, and Actinobacteria were the dominant phyla in the soil after the addition of compost. The application of compost has increased the abundance of Actinobacteria and Chloroflexi by 7.6 and 6.6%, respectively, but decreased the abundance of Firmicutes from 25.12 to 18.77%. Redundancy analysis revealed that soil factors pH, solid urease, organic matter, and total nitrogen were closely related to bacterial communities. Discussion: The addition of compost effectively reduced soil pH and increased soil enzyme activity and organic matter content. An analysis of this study provides theoretical support for compost's use as a saline soil amendment.

Abstract:Saline soils are characterized by organic matter and nutrient deficiencies, and their mineral fraction consists almost exclusively of fine sand particles, resulting in an unstable soil formation process. Due to the high amount of soluble salts in the soil, the osmotic pressure of the soil is elevated, restricting water absorption. This ultimately leads to the death of the plant and adversely impacts crop growth and yield. Incorporating Fe2+ can improve fertilizer utilization efficiency by reducing the oxidation of NH4+ to nitrogen (N2). However, reports on the usage of iron addition for the improvement of saline-alkali soils are scanty. This study conducted an outdoor simulation in pots to assess the soils of soybean crops during the podding stage. The effects of Fe2+ along with organic fertilizer or bio-C addition were elucidated on the composition and function of saline and alkaline microbial communities. The findings were correlated with soil environmental factors to analyze the dynamic changes in soil microbial communities. The soil pH decreased by 1.22–2.18% and SOM increased by 2.87–11.77% with organic fertilizer (OF) treatment. Compared to the ck treatment (control without iron supplementation), other treatments showed an average increase in abundance of dominant phylum by 8.25–11.23%, and an increase in the diversity and richness of the microbial community by 1.73–10.87%. The harmful bacteria in the Actinobacteriota, Chloroflexi, and Basidiomycota groups reduced by 57.83%, 74.29%, and 67.29%, and the beneficial bacteria in Ascomycota increased by 18.23–20.39%. Fe2+ combined with organic fertilizer or bio-C treatment could weaken the competitive relationship between the various bacterial lineages, enhance synergistic ability, favor the function and structure of the microbial community, and thus, improve the soil environment. Overall, the application of Fe2+ combined with organic fertilizers improved the saline-alkali soil, while the biochar (C) treatment mainly affected the soil nutrients. Through its detailed analysis, the study provides actionable insights for farmers to manage soil fertility in saline-alkaline soils, thereby overcoming the challenges of poor yields due to salinity stress. This will lead to resilient and sustainable farming systems, contributing to global food security.

Abstract:Aiming to evaluate the influence of alkali solids amendment on the sewage sludge aerobic composting and to declare the potential of related composts on infertile soil amelioration, sewage sludge and sawdust mixture were amended with straw biochar, hardwood biochar, fly ash and lime by 10% addition ratio in dry weight during the aerobic composting process; finally, potential of the related composts on the infertile soil amelioration was investigated by pot experiment. The results showed that the alkali solids amendment could prolong the thermophilic phase, and promote the composting material heat inactivation. Addition of straw and hardwood biochar facilitated more than 21.65% and 18.16% organic matter degradation. During the composting, the compost pH decreased at the beginning and then gradually increased before reached values of 6.78-7.33, while the fly ash and lime amendments could lead to higher pH values in the beginning stage. The alkali solids amendment reduced the salinity of the compost with final products EC lower than 3000 μS·cm-1. The addition of straw and hardwood biochar could increase the total nitrogen content by reducing the ammonia loss at the beginning, while the fly ash and lime amendments would result in ammonia loss in the beginning stage. Despite the composting variation, the contents of nitrate increased and the ammonium salt content decreased gradually. The biochar addition can accelerate the nitrate transformation while the fly ash and lime amendment had slight inhibitory effect on the nitrate transformation and plant germination. The pot experiment revealed that applying compost products could significantly improve the brassica growth, Cu and Zn micronutrients accumulation since the compost addition could increase the soil organic carbon content, as well as soil N, P, and K contents. Compared with the non-amended compost, the alkali solids amendment could slightly reduce the Cu and Zn micronutrients accumulation, while the fertile potentials were acceptable. The study indicated that straw and hardwood biochar were more suitable than fly ash and lime as compost amendment, and the related compost products had great potential on infertile soil amelioration.

Abstract:Soil salinization poses a serious threat to crop growth. The selection of appropriate soil modifiers and water-soluble fertilizers for saline soils represents a crucial method for enhancing crop yields. The modifiers and medium-element water-soluble fertilizers were prepared using hydrochar derived from rice straw. Two distinct experiments were designed to study the effect of modifiers and water-soluble fertilizers on saline soils. The first experiment, designated as the "Soil Cultivation Experiment" , sought to investigate the impact of various modifiers on soil quality. The second experiment, designated as the "Method of Field Micro-Area Experiment", aimed to assess the influence of water-soluble fertilizers on saline soils. The results showed that the application of modifiers and water-soluble fertilizers significantly enhanced comprehensive soil physical and chemical properties, crop growth, soil enzyme activity, and other key indicators in saline and alkaline soils. The optimal dosage of the modifier was 20 g/kg, which reduced the pH value from 8.62 to 8.21 and the decreased alkalinity by 8.26%. Furthermore, their application effectively boosted nutrient levels, including organic matter, and increased soil enzyme activity. The biomass of alfalfa showed enhancements of 63.01% and 20.87% and the biomass of leymus chinensis increased by 29.39% and 9.02% for the two batches, respectively. Notably, the application of water-soluble fertilizer yielded achieved superior results. This study also provided a theoretical basis for their future application in soda saline–alkali soil.

Organic Materials and AMF Addition Promote Growth of Taxodium 'zhongshanshan' by Improving Soil Structure

Abstract:Soil salinization is considered a type of global-scale soil degradation, whereby excessive salinity severely diminishes soil health, which is primarily manifested through disrupted soil structures and reduced fertility. Furthermore, plant growth capacity is inhibited, and productivity is diminished. Consequently, the improvement of saline soils is regarded as a particularly important aspect of enhancing land production. To elucidate the roles of organic amendments and mycorrhizal fungi in the improvement of saline soils, seven treatments were set up, including biochar alone (B), straw alone (S), arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi alone (A), biochar in combination with arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (BA), straw in combination with arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (SA), and a control (CK). The results revealed that the seedling height growth rate under the BA treatment was significantly higher than that of the CK by 31.66%. The capillary porosity of the soil under the addition of BA was significantly higher than the CK by 3.17% in the 0–20 cm soil layer. The BA treatment reduced the fractal dimension of soil aggregates considerably by 19.06% in the 0–20 cm soil layer, and 13.71% in the 40–60 cm soil layer in contrast to the CK, respectively. In addition, the positive effects of the BA treatment were significant in the 20–40 cm soil layer. Overall, the application of biochar alone promoted the water stability of soil aggregates. The combination of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi and biochar promoted plant growth, improved soil pore structures, promoted agglomerate water stability, and led to improved microbial activities. The results showed that organic amendments applied in conjunction with AMF improved the environment of salinized soil, which is a key factor in the promotion of plant growth and the long-term stability of soil health. This study provides a key technical basis for remediation of salinized soil.
Saline-Alkali Soil Property Improved by the Synergistic Effects of Priestia aryabhattai JL-5, Staphylococcus pseudoxylosus XW-4, Leymus chinensis and Soil Microbiota

Abstract:Two saline-alkali-tolerant bacterial strains, Priestia aryabhattai JL-5 and Staphylococcus pseudoxylosus XW-4, were isolated, with high capabilities of hydrolyzing phosphate and producing cellulase, respectively. The molecular mechanisms regulating the saline-alkali tolerance in the strain JL-5 were further investigated using transcriptome analysis. The contents of lactic acid and proline and the enzymatic activity of glutamine synthetase in the strain JL-5 were significantly increased. The properties of saline-alkali soils were significantly improved by the enhanced growth of the indicator plant Leymus chinensis under the combined applications of the strains JL-5 and XW-4 mixed with corn straw. The contents of catalase, peroxidase, superoxide dismutase and proline of L. chinensis were significantly increased, and the content of malondialdehyde was significantly decreased in the combined treatment of both bacterial strains. The contents of available nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium and organic matters in the soil treated with both strains were significantly increased, as well as the diversity and abundance of the soil microbiota. Our study evidently demonstrated the synergistic effects of the strains JL-5 and XW-4, indicator plants and the local microbiota in terms of improving the saline-alkali soil properties, providing strong experimental evidence to support the commercial development of the combined application of both strains to improve the properties of saline-alkali soils.

Remediation of organic amendments on soil salinization: Focusing on the relationship between soil salts and microbial communities

Abstract:Soil salinization has emerged as a major factor with an adverse influence on agricultural green development worldwide. It is necessary to develop high-efficiency and ecologically beneficial management measures for alleviating soil salinization. The experiment of application for cow manure (CM), biochar (BC), and bio-organic fertilizer (BIO) in soil with light salinity was conducted to investigate the remediation of organic materials on soil salinization with melon (Cucumis melo L.) by reducing the availability of saline ions and shifting the soil microbial community. Results showed that BC treatment significantly decreased the EC values of the soil and soil solution by 19.23% and 27.02% and the concentrations of Na+, K+, and Cl- by 13.28%, 13.08%, and 15.21%, respectively, followed by CM and BIO treatments. High-throughput sequencing identified that organic amendments significantly improved the richness of the soil bacterial community and increased the relative abundances of Acidobacteria and Firmicutes by 33.11% and 111.2%, respectively, and the beneficial salt-tolerant bacterial genera Flavobacterium, Bacillus and Arthrobacter by 32.04%, 38.92% and 35.67%, respectively. Additionally, soil Na+, Ca2+, K+ and Cl- were significantly negatively correlated with Acidobacteria and Flavobacterium and were also the most important factors driving the changes in the structure of the soil bacterial communities. The bacterial networks were more complex in the organic amendments treatments than in CK, reflecting through more nodes and links and a higher average clustering coefficient, density and modularity. This study provided a comprehensive understanding of the application of organic amendments in alleviating soil salinization and improving soil bacterial and fungal communities and provides scientific support for agriculture green development.
Combined Application of Organic Fertilizer with Microbial Inoculum Improved Aggregate Formation and Salt Leaching in a Secondary Salinized Soil

Abstract:Greenhouse vegetable production provides significant quantities of vegetables throughout the year and improves farmers' income. However, over-fertilization with mineral fertilizer causes soil secondary salinization and decreases the stability of the soil structure. To improve aggregate formation and decrease salt accumulation in the soil profile, bio-organic fertilizers (Protaetia brevitarsis larvae frass with Bacillus amyloliticus and/or Trichoderma harziensis) were applied to partially substitute mineral fertilizer in a salinized vegetable soil. Soil nutrient condition, aggregate stability, and salt movement in the soil profile were measured in a greenhouse double-cucumber system. The results showed that soil organic matter (SOM), total nitrogen (TN), and available phosphorus (AP) increased significantly under bio-organic fertilizer treatments compared with control. Soil electrical conductivity (EC) and total salt content (TSC) decreased by 15.74–24.20% and 19.15–29.05%, respectively, with bio-organic fertilizers (p < 0.05). Cl−, NO3−, and SO42− content under double inoculation with B. amyloliticus and T. harziensis reduced by 31.19%, 26.30%, and 53.11%, respectively, compared to CK (p < 0.05). In addition, double inoculation was more efficient in reducing nitrate content in the soil profile than single inoculation. Soil microaggregates of 0.25–0.053 mm increased by 75.87–78.51% with bio-fertilizers compared with control, and double inoculation was the best for aggregate formation. In conclusion, the inoculation of plant-growth-promoting and salt-tolerant microorganisms with high humic acid larvae frass can alleviate salinization in vegetable soil, enhance soil nutrient content, and improve the soil structure.

Combination of Biochar and Functional Bacteria Drives the Ecological Improvement of Saline–Alkali Soil

Abstract:The addition of functional bacteria (FB) is low-cost and is widely applied in saline–alkali soil remediation, which may gradually become ineffective due to inter-specific competition with indigenous bacteria. To improve the adaptability of FB, the target FB strains were isolated from local saline–alkali soil, and the combined effects of FB and biochar were explored. The results showed that FB isolated from local soil showed better growth than the purchased strains under high saline–alkali conditions. However, the indigenous community still weakened the function of added FB. Biochar addition provided a specific niche and increased the relative abundance of FB, especially for Proteobacteria and Bacteroidota. As a result, the co-addition of 10% biochar and FB significantly increased the soil available phosphorus (AP) by 74.85% and available nitrogen (AN) by 114.53%. Zea Mays's growth (in terms of height) was enhanced by 87.92% due to the decreased salinity stress and extra nutrients provided.

Abstract:Soil salinization has emerged as the major factor negatively impacting soil quality in the coastal mild saline-alkali soil of the Yangtze River estuary. Soil quality is vital to agricultural development and the restoration of saline-alkali soils has become an urgent task. Biochar is often used for saline-alkali soil improvement, but few studies have explored the combined effect of biochar and leaching on it. Herein, two biochar (rice straw biochar (RBC) and humic acid magnetically modified biochar (HMBC)) were applied to the coastal mild saline-alkali soil with different application amounts (1, 3, and 5% (w/w)) plus leaching process. The results showed that HMBC had better effects than RBC in improving soil properties (e.g., dissolved organic matter, cation exchange capacity, available phosphorus, and available potassium). The leaching process led to soil pH value dropping from 8.43 to 7.57 and electrical conductivity (EC) from 622 to 200 μs/cm. Furthermore, after the pot experiment, the concentration of soil soluble salts increased with soil depth. The salt content of the soil without leaching was significantly higher than that of the soil with leaching; after applying HMBC or RBC, the salt content of all soil layers decreased. Combined 5% HMBC and leaching also improved the seed germination rate, fresh weight, dry weight, and plant height, and the height reached 9.13 cm. Although leaching resulted in a slight decrease in chlorophyll content, the chlorophyll content increased with the increased concentration of biochar. Overall, the integrated use of a suitable biochar application amount (5% HMBC) and leaching for coastal mild saline-alkali soil could be an effective strategy to reduce soil salinity, enhance the improvement of soil quality and promote plant productivity.

Abstract:Saline-alkali soil poses significant chanllenges to sustainable development of agriculture. Although biochar is commonly used as a soil organic amendment, its microbial remediation mechanism on saline-alkali soil requires further confirmation. To address this, we conducted a pot experiment using cotton seedlings to explore the potential remediation mechanism of rice straw biochar (BC) at three different levels on saline-alkaline soil. The results showed that adding of 2% biochar greatly improved the quality of saline-alkaline soil by reducing pH levels, electrical conductivity (EC), and water-soluble ions. Moreover, biochar increased the soil organic matter (SOM), nutrient availability and extracellular enzyme activity. Interestingly, it also reduced soil salinity and salt content in various cotton plant tissues. Additionally, biochar had a notable impact on the composition of the microbial community , causing changes in soil metabolic pathways. Notably, the addition of biochar promoted the growth and metabolism of dominant salt-tolerant bacteria, such as Proteobacteria, Bacteroidota, Acidobacteriota, and Actinobacteriota. By enhancing the positive correlation between microorganisms and metabolites, biochar alleviated the inhibitory effect of salt ions on microorganisms. In conclusion, the incorporation of biochar significantly improves the soil microenvironment, reduces soil salinity, and shows promise in ameliorating saline-alkaline soil conditions.

[Effects of Biochar and Soil Conditioner on Coastal Barren Saline-alkali Soil].

Abstract:This study aimed to quantify the biological improvement and availability from a soil amendment substance for barren severe saline-alkali soils. A field experiment was conducted to apply biochar (B) and soil conditioner (C) rich in humic substances to pioneer crops and oil sunflower planted in the coastal barren severe saline-alkali area of the North China Low Plain. The six treatments included single or combined application of two-level biochar rates (0 and 1.25 kg·m-2) and three-level soil conditioner rates (0, 0.83, and 1.66 kg·m-2) at the start of the experiment. Soil samples were collected at 30 cm per layer and sampling from 0 to 90 cm after the oil was collected. The results revealed that the application of biochar increased the saline concentration of the 0-30 cm and 60-90 cm soil layers, whereas the soil conditioner significantly decreased the saline concentration of the 0-30 cm soil layers. Neither biochar nor conditioner showed a significant impact on soil pH. Biochar exhibited varying impacts on soil nutrients, that is, significantly inhibiting soil nitrification, which resulted in soil NO3--N decreasing while NH4+-N increased significantly, along with no significant impact on soil organic matter content (SOM) in the 0-90 cm soil profile. The application of soil conditioner exerted positive effects on improving SOM in the 0-30 cm layer and NO3--N in the 0-90 cm soil depth when the conditioner rate was at 1.66 kg·m-2. Either the sole application or the co-application of biomass and conditioner, along with their interaction, exhibited an increasing trend for the NH4+-N, available phosphorus (Olsen-P), and available potassium (Kex) contents, also seen in the 0-90 cm soil profile, although the increase effect for the three nutrients was primarily attributed to biochar. Soil conditioner was more effective in increasing SOM and reducing saline in the 0-30 cm soil layer. The application of a higher amount of conditioner accelerated soil nitrification, whereas biochar was applied essentially as a nitrification inhibitor. Therefore, the co-application of biochar with soil conditioner would be an effective practice for improving soil fertility, preventing soil nitrification, and deterring nitrate leaching, as well as reducing saline for topsoil, which would be a basis for developing soil amendments to control saline and a fertile soil environment for pioneer crops planted in coastal barren severe saline-alkali areas.

Effects of Combined Application of Organic and Inorganic Fertilizers on Physical and Chemical Properties in Saline–Alkali Soil

Abstract:To mitigate the issues of severe farmland soil salinization, the environmental degradation stemming from the overuse of chemical fertilizers, and suboptimal soil composition, a study was conducted to investigate the influence of different types and ratios of organic fertilizers on the physical and chemical attributes of saline–alkali soil. This study aimed to investigate the relationship between different types and proportions of organic fertilizers, soil moisture, organic fertilizer application rates, organic carbon molecular structure, and the soil environment in saline–alkali soils. Reducing the application of chemical fertilizers and substituting them with organic fertilizers can improve the soil quality of saline–alkali lands. The results indicated that replacing a part of the urea with organic fertilizer in saline–alkali farmland reduced the soil salinity by 11.1 to 22.8% in the 0–60 cm soil layer, decreased the soil pH by 0.11 to 1.52%, and increased the soil redox potential (Eh) values by 2.5 to 4.3% in the 0–20 cm layer of the mild and moderate saline–alkali soils. It also decreased the accumulation of the soil organic matter (OM) during the growing season. Compared to commercial organic fertilizers, natural organic fertilizers increased the accumulation of the soil soluble carbon (DOC) and nitrogen (DON), resulting in less soil salinity accumulation. When commercial organic fertilizer was applied in a 1:1 ratio with inorganic fertilizer, the salt accumulation was minimized. Compared to conventional fertilization, organic fertilizer reduced the accumulation of the NH4+-N (ammonium nitrogen) and NO3−-N (nitrate nitrogen) in the soil by 3.1 to 22.6%. In comparison to conventional chemical fertilizers, the application of organic fertilizer in the mild and moderate saline–alkali soils increased the accumulation of the DOC, DON, microbial biomass carbon (MBC), microbial biomass nitrogen (MBN), and microbial quotient during the grain-filling stage. Specifically, it increased the DOC, DON, and DOC/DON by 12.7 to 26.7%, 12 to 59.3%, and 15.2 to 35.5%, respectively. The application of commercial organic fertilizer in the mild saline–alkali soils increased the MBC, MBN, MBC/SOC, and MBN/TN by 37.1, 65.6, 36.7, and 4.7%, respectively. Through analyzing the relative proportions of soil surface organic carbon functional groups during the grain filling period, we observed that, after the application of organic fertilizer, the OM in the mildly salinized soils primarily originated from terrestrial plant litter, whereas, in moderately salinized soils, the OM was mainly derived from microbial sources.

Abstract:The nutrient-limiting conditions in saline–alkali soil as well as the salinity and alkalinity stress are successfully alleviated by water management measures and the addition of organic matter. However, the impacts of these two strategies on the microbe-driven CO2 emissions in saline–alkaline soils are not yet clear. Therefore, a 150-day incubation experiment was conducted in this study to evaluate the short-term effects of water regulation and the addition of organic matter with different characteristics on CO2 emissions and microbial community characteristics in saline–alkali soils under non-flooding conditions. This study was conducted at two water saturations, i.e., 50% WFPS and 80% WFPS. In addition, five organic matter treatments were conducted: CK: control; N: urea; SN: Straw + urea; SNH: Straw + urea + microbial agent; and SNB: Straw + urea + biochar. The results demonstrated that compared with 50% WFPS, 80% WFPS significantly increased cumulative CO2 emission by 27.66%, but significantly decreased salt content and the fungal Chao1 and Shannon indices. The application of the biochar and microbial agent decreased the cumulative CO2 emissions of the SN treatment by 27.39% and 14.92%, respectively. When sufficient carbon supply is available, the decrease in fungal diversity may reduce CO2 emission. The findings demonstrated that SNH and SNB at 80% WFPS might decrease CO2 emissions under straw carbon intake as well as the loss of labile organic carbon (LOC). Additionally, these treatments can alleviate microbial stress caused by salinity, which has a favorable impact on enhancing carbon storage in salinity-affected dryland soils.

Abstract:Studying the effects of different modified materials on the physicochemical properties and fungal community structure of saline-alkali soil can provide theoretical basis for reasonable improvement of saline-alkali soil. High-throughput sequencing technology was used to explore the effects of five treatments, namely, control (CK), desulfurization gypsum (T1), soil ameliorant (T2), organic fertilizer (T3), and desulfurization gypsum compounds soil ameliorant and organic fertilizer (T4), on soil physicochemical properties and fungal community diversity, composition, and structure of saline-alkali soil in Hetao Plain, Inner Mongolia. The results showed that compared with those in CK, the contents of available phosphorus, available potassium, organic matter, and alkali hydrolysis nitrogen were significantly increased in modified material treatments, and the T4 treatment significantly decreased soil pH. Modified treatments increased the Simpson and Shannon indexes of fungi but decreased the Chao1 index. The dominant fungi were Ascomycota, Basidiomycota, and Mortierellomycota, and the dominant genera were Mortierella, Conocybe, Botryotrichum, Fusarium, and Pseudogymnoascus. The application of modified materials increased the relative abundance of Ascomycota, Basidiomycota, Fusarium, and Pseudogymnoascus, while decreasing the relative abundance of Mortierellomycota, Chytridiomycota, and Mortierella. LEfSe analysis showed that modified treatments altered the fungal community biomarkers. Correlation analysis showed that pH and available potassium were the main environmental factors affecting fungal community structure. The results can provide scientific basis for improving saline-alkali soil and increasing soil nutrients in Hetao Plain, Inner Mongolia.

Abstract:Aims: The high salinity of soil, nutrient scarcity, and poor aggregate structure limit the exploitation and utilization of coastal mudflat resources and the sustainable development of saline soil agriculture. In this paper, the effects of applying exogenous organic acids combined with biological substrate on the composition and diversity of soil bacterial community were studied in moderately saline mudflats in Jiangsu Province. Methods: A combination of three exogenous organic acids (humic acid, fulvic acid, and citric acid) and four biological substrates (cottonseed hull, cow manure, grass charcoal, and pine needle) was set up set up on a coastal saline mudflat planted with a salt-tolerant forage grass, sweet sorghum. A total of 120 kg ha −1 of organic acids and 5,000 kg ha −1 of substrates were used, plus two treatments, CK without application of organic acids and substrates and CK 0 in bare ground, for a total of 14 treatments. Results: No significant difference was found in the alpha diversity of soil bacterial community among all treatments ( p ≥ 0.05), with the fulvic acid composite pine needle (FPN) treatment showing the largest increase in each index. The beta diversity differed significantly ( p < 0.05) among all treatments, and the difference between citric acid–grass charcoal (CGC) and CK treatments was greater than that of other treatments. All treatments were effective in increasing the number of bacterial ASVs and affecting the structural composition of the community. Citric acid–cow manure (CCM), FPN, and CGC treatments were found to be beneficial for increasing the relative abundance of Proteobacteria , Chloroflexi , and Actinobacteria , respectively. By contrast, all treatments triggered a decrease in the relative abundance of Acidobacteria . Conclusion: Among the 12 different combinations of exogenous organic acid composite biomass substrates applied to the coastal beach, the CGC treatment was more conducive to increasing the relative abundance of the salt-tolerant bacteria Proteobacteria , Chloroflexi and Actinobacteria , and improving the community structure of soil bacteria. The FPN treatment was more conducive to increase the species diversity of the soil bacterial community and adjust the species composition of the bacterial community.
