Abstract:Improving the properties of activated carbon (AC) electrodes for enhancing the electrochemical performance of commercial supercapacitors is still a great challenge. In this work, a coconut shell carbonized raw material is used to successfully manufacture AC by the traditional steam activation method followed by further calcination in CO2. Results showed that a skeleton mesh wall was formed in AC, the thickness of the mesh wall was around 1.5 nm, and the crystalline phase of grain size of 1.13 nm was controlled to form independently in the wall of AC after calcination in CO2 for 4 h. The carbocyclic layer space of the grain phase ranges from 0.381 to 0.392 nm in AC, which is 17% wider than that of 0.335 nm of graphite. The AC shows a high specific surface area (1782 m(2)/g), and the supercapacitor prepared by AC shows a high specific capacitance (112.5 F.g(-1) at 0.1 A.g(-1)), a high capacitance retention rate (retains 89.06% after 10,000 charge/discharge cycles), a high rate performance (specific capacitance going down from 111.2 to 65.1 F.g(-1) under current density from 0.1 to 10 A.g(-1)), low internal resistance, and a power and energy capacity (energy density, 28.83 W h.kg(-1); power density, 9.89 kW.kg(-1)). It is worth comparing with the typical commercial YP-50 of Kuraray, Japan.
Highly N/O co-doped ultramicroporous carbons derived from nonporous metal-organic framework for high performance supercapacitors

Abstract:A new nonporous Zn-based metal-organic framework (NPMOF) synthesized from a high nitrogen-containing rigid ligand was converted into porous carbon materials by direct carbonization without adding additional carbon sources. A series of NPMOF-derived porous carbons with very high N/O contents (24.1% for NPMOF-700, 20.2% for NPMOF-800, 15.1% for NPMOF-900) were prepared by adjusting the pyrolysis temperatures. The NPMOF-800 fabricated electrode exhibits a high capacitance of 220 F/g and extremely large surface area normalized capacitance of 57.7 mu F/cm(2) compared to other reported MOF-derived porous carbon electrodes, which could be attributed to the abundant ultramicroporosity and high N/O co-doping. More importantly, symmetric supercapacitor assembled with the MOF-derived carbon manifests prominent stability, i.e., 99.1% capacitance retention after 10,000 cycles at 1.0 A/g. This simple preparation of MOF-derived porous carbon materials not only finds an application direction for a variety of porous or even nonporous MOFs, but also opens a way for the production of porous carbon materials for superior energy storage. Boosting Supercapacitive Performance of Flexible Carbon Via Surface Engineering.

Abstract:The relatively low specific capacitance of flexible carbons hinders their practical application for fabricating high-performance flexible supercapacitors. In this work, a surface engineering method is proposed to boost the supercapacitive performance of the flexible carbon. In this method, a flexible carbon was fabricated from carbon felt via co-activation with potassium argininate and potassium hydroxide (KOH) as activators, and the resulting material is abbreviated as AKCF. Unlike traditional KOH activation processes, the addition of potassium argininate can produce a micro-graphitized carbon layer to be the outer layer of AKCF fibers for achieving better electronic transfer. Due to the improved conductivity and lower charge transfer resistance endowed by a thin micro-graphitized carbon layer, the capacitance of the AKCF-0.1 (0.1 M arginine was used) electrode obtained by the co-activation process is elevated to a 1.8-fold higher value of 403 C.g(-1) (2583 mC.cmz) relative to the AKCF-0 (0 M arginine was used) electrode prepared by KOH activation alone (222 C.g(-1) or 1369 mC.cmz). Moreover, this AKCF-0.1 electrode also displays satisfactory rate capability (66% capacitance retention after a 20-fold current increase) and highly stable cycling performance (no capacitance decline after 20,000 cycles). In addition, the asymmetric supercapacitors constructed with this AKCF-0.1 electrode as the flexible negative electrode expresses high energy densities of 68.4 Wh.kg(-1) and 0.139 mWh.cm(-2) in aqueous and gel electrolytes, respectively. Oxygen-doped activated carbons derived from three kinds of biomass: preparation, characterization and performance as electrode materials for supercapacitors

Abstract:In this work, oxygen-rich activated carbon compounds were prepared from three kinds of biomass by simple carbonization and they were investigated as electrodes for supercapacitors. The selected biomasses were waste dragon fruit skin, Momordica grosvenori skin and Firmiana catkins. Three kinds of as-prepared activated carbons showed abundant oxygen-containing groups and typical amorphous characteristics with high specific surface areas of 911.2 m(2) g(-1), 597.5 m(2) g(-1) and 286.7 m(2) g(-1), respectively. This combination of high specific surface areas and abundant active surface functional groups resulted in capacitances of 286.9 F g(-1), 238.7 F g(-1) and 226.6 F g(-1) at 0.5 A g(-1), respectively. Furthermore, three kinds of as-prepared activated carbons also showed excellent cycling performance with nearly 100% retention over 5000 cycles at 4.0 A g(-1) in 2.0 mol l(-1) KOH solution. As a result, three kinds of as-prepared activated carbons exhibited favorable electrochemical performances in potential application as electrode materials for supercapacitors.
Internally-Externally Molecules-Scissored Ramie Carbon for High Performance Electric Double Layer Supercapacitors

Abstract:Ramie carbon from the massively three-harvests-one-year and naturally channel-structured ramie straw is typically emerging as the excellent waste-biomass-utilization target toward high-performance electrochemical energy storage devices. However, the traditional activation strategies less fully optimize the pore distribution for the purpose of optimal energy storage capability. Herein, we reported the hierarchically interconnected three-dimensional ramie porous carbon based on waste ramie straw by internally-externally molecules-scissored activation strategy with pre-embedded KOH and re-added KOH molecules coordinately (in-ex-RPC). Benefiting from the synergistically internal-external activation strategy, this in-ex-RPC displays an excellent specific capacitance of 300 F g –1 , which is much better than that of ramie porous carbon singly through pre-embedded KOH activation (in-RPC, 194 F g –1 ) or directly adding KOH activation (ex-RPC, 213 F g –1 ). Based on it, the aqueous symmetric supercapacitors display a cyclic capacity of 90.9%-retaining after 20000 cycles at 5 A g –1 . Therefore, this work may provide an effective strategy for energy storage applications of waste ramie straw and for further promoting waste biomass utilization.

Abstract:Abstract For an active electrode material, the morphology, microstructure and the effective specific surface area derived from them, have a dominant effect for the high performance supercapacitors. In this study, 3D interconnected activated carbons with controlled and optimized morphologies and porous structures were prepared from accessible carbon source and graphene oxide by a hydrothermal carbonization and following an activation method. Through optimizing the ratios of the precursors and reaction conditions, an electrode material with excellent specific surface area of 2318 m 2 g −1 , meso-/macro-pore ratio of 63.2% (meso-/macro-pore volume reached to 0.83 cm 3 g −1 ), as well as an outstanding electrical conductivity of 46.6 S m −1 , was obtained. The materials exhibit superior double-layer capacitive performances on a symmetric supercapacitor, delivering superior specific capacitance of 157 F g −1 in organic electrolyte system at current density of 0.5 A g −1 , excellent energy density of 37.6 W h kg −1 with a power density of 7.1 kW kg −1 and good cycling stability of capacitance retention of 94% over 7000 cycles. These results offer a practical method to prepare the desired carbon electrode materials with controlled morphology and structure for high efficiency electrochemical energy storage devices.

Abstract:Oxygen‐doped activated carbons (ACs) are prepared with glucose as precursor through a two‐step consecutive activation/treatment process consisting of a KOH activation and a following H2O‐steam treatment. The oxygen contents are controllable adjusted by regulating the parameters of the H2O‐steam treatment, of which the mechanism is investigated. Effects of O‐doping on electrochemical performances of ACs in supercapacitors are systematically analyzed for both inorganic and organic systems.SummaryIn this work, oxygen‐doped activated carbons (ACs) are derived from glucose by hydrothermal synthesis (HTS) and a two‐step consecutive activation/treatment. The first KOH activation leads to the formation of well‐developed hierarchical porous structure. The second H2O‐steam treatment controls the fraction of oxygen contents ranging from 3.35 to 10.43 at% by regulating the treatment time and temperature. We propose a reaction for the oxygen reduction during the H2O‐steam treatment, of which the resultant reaction rate increases with the increase of the treatment temperature. The nominal activation energy for the reaction is 18.79 kJ/mol. The symmetric supercapacitors with the ACs of the highest oxygen content exhibit the best electrochemical performances of an optimum specific capacitance of 240.49 F/g in the electrolyte of 1 M H2SO4. However, the symmetric supercapacitors with the ACs of the lowest oxygen content exhibit the best electrochemical performances of an optimum specific capacitance of 171.81 F/g in the organic electrolyte of 1 M Et4BF4 in AN.

Abstract:Thermally oxidized activated carbon (TOAC), acidified activated carbon (AAC) and thermally deoxygenized AC (TAC) were fabricated. The oxygen content of TOAC increased from 10.5 wt% for pristine AC to 14.8 wt%. The specific surface area of TOAC (3260.4 m 2 g −1 ) was much higher than that of the AAC (2318.8 m 2 g −1 ) and TAC (2811.8 m 2 g −1 ). The TOAC obtained a high capacitance of 420.0 F g −1 at 1.0 A g −1 in the voltage range of −1.0 V ∼ 0 V, which was significantly higher than AC (287.0 F g −1 ), AAC (266.0 F g −1 ) and TAC (208.0 F g −1 ). The results indicated that the anchoring oxygen and large specific surface area had a synergistic effect on the capacitance performance. The plentiful oxygen could enhance the wettability between electrode and electrolyte. And the large specific surface area could provide plenty of positions for ions adsorption and accelerate the ionic diffusion and transport.

Abstract:In this work, we prepare a series of activated carbons (ACs) of different morphologies, porous structures, and oxygen contents from glucose with hydrothermal synthesis (HTS) followed by a one-step (H2O-steam or KOH) or two-step (H2O-steam-KOH or KOH-H2O-steam) activation. The largest surface area of the prepared ACs is more than 3400 m2/g, and the corresponding mesopore volume is 1.21 cm3/g. The fraction of oxygen in the ACs varies in a range of 3.94 to 9.9 at%. The electrochemical performance of the symmetric supercapacitor cells (SCs) made from the as-prepared ACs is characterized in different aqueous electrolytes. The optimum capacitance of the SCs is 421 F/g at 0.5 A/g and 304 F/g at 10 A/g. The oxygen-enriched functional groups have limited contribution to the energy storage for the SCs with neutral electrolyte and profound effects on the increase of the energy storage for the SCs with strong acidic and alkaline electrolytes. The processing routes developed in this work likely open an avenue to tailor the structures and oxygen-enriched functional groups of ACs.

Abstract:The porous structure and specific surface area (SSA) of porous carbon are important factors affecting the performance of supercapacitors. However, it is still a great challenge to leverage the tradeoff between the SSA and mesopores to achieve both excellent capacitive and rate performance. Herein, we develop a facile pore- regulating strategy to integrate interconnected porous structure, large SSA and suitable mesopore volume in porous carbons. The co-pyrolysis of cotton stalks and oxidized coal can generate more defect sites, which is conducive to form a honeycomb-like morphology and reasonable porous structures in the following activation process. The integration of large SSA (1510 m 2 g −1 ) and abundant mesopore volume (0.24 cm 3 g −1 ) endow the optimal sample with a high capacitance (345 F g −1 @ 1 A/g), superior rate performance (69 % capacitance retention @ 50 A/g), and excellent long cyclic stability in 6 M KOH electrolyte. Moreover, the assembled symmetric supercapacitor exhibits a high energy density of 56 Wh kg −1 @ 741 W kg −1 in EMIM BF 4 . This work provides a simple strategy to tailor the morphology and structure of coal and biomass-derived porous carbon, and offers new insights into the tradeoff between SSA and mesopores for high performance supercapacitors.

Abstract:<p>Improving both surface and space utilization of active carbon is crucial for compact supercapacitors. Herein, two activated carbons are prepared through homogeneous activation (HAC) and traditional outside-in activation (OIAC). Compared with OIAC with deep and branched porous structure, HAC shows an interconnected porous structure, leading to higher density, better gravimetric and volumetric capacitances, and improved rate performance. The results demonstrate that interconnected porous structure by homogeneous activation promotes high surface and space utilization as well as robust ion transport kinetics of activated carbon for capacitive energy storage.</p>

High-yield ramie derived carbon toward high-performance supercapacitors

Abstract:Biomass porous carbon possesses prominent advantages of high specific surface area, appropriate pore distribution and excellent chemical stability, making them suitable for electrode materials of supercapacitor. However, achieving its high yield based on remarkably structural integrity of biomass derived carbon at the molecular level is extremely difficult due to the incompatibility between low-activity biomass chains and highly polymerized polymer chains. Here, we demonstrate a universal self-crosslinked strategy to effectively build the high-yield ramie derived carbon ( hy -RDC) by molecularly regulating high-activity ramie precursor and hydroxy-protonated phenolic resin synergistically. Benefiting from the chemical compatibility between cellulose chain and phenolic chain and the structural integrity of ramie, this hy -RDC remarkably possesses a high yield of 31.33%, much higher than pure ramie carbon (3.56%) and pure phenolic carbon (15.22%) solely. These hy -RDC-based supercapacitors deliver an outstanding energy density of 35.58 Wh kg -1 at a high power density of 51.24 kW kg -1 than pure ramie carbon (34.29 Wh kg -1 at 51.22 kW kg -1 ) and pure phenolic carbon (14.08 Wh kg -1 at 46.09 kW kg -1 ). Evidently, this work may give a way to obtain high-yield biomass carbon with the effective electrochemical performance and the excellent structural stability, and dramatically promoting the energy storage application of biomass carbon.

Oxygen-Enriched Hierarchical Nanoporous Carbon Electrodes for Supercapacitors

Abstract:Enhancing the energy storage capacity of carbon electrodes is a key challenge to developing high-performance supercapacitors. In this study, we design an oxygen-enriched hierarchical nanoporous carbon electrode using laser fabrication and subsequent electrochemical activation, which demonstrates superior energy storage capacity. The carbon electrode is first obtained through the carbonization of phenolic resin under instantaneous high temperature induced by laser, resulting in multiple ion transport channels and a specific capacitance of 64.17 mF cm–2 at the current density of 0.2 mA cm–2. To further improve the performance, electrochemical activation is successfully conducted, leading to a 12.1-fold increase of the specific capacitance of the carbon electrodes. It is found that O–CO-containing functional groups formed during the activation process significantly contribute to the high capacitance enhancement. In a 1 M H2SO4 electrolyte, the activated hierarchical nanoporous carbon electrode delivers a high specific capacitance of 778.3 mF cm–2 under the same test conditions. Additionally, the abundant porous structure and excellent reversibility of redox reaction of the oxygen-containing functional groups enable the assembled supercapacitor to obtain a specific capacitance of 45.3 mF cm–2 at the current density of 0.4 mA cm–2 and maintain a capacitance retention rate of 93.6% after 10,000 charge–discharge tests. This study presents a strategy to prepare carbon electrode materials with both high performance and excellent stability.

High Capacitive Performance of N,O-Codoped Carbon Aerogels Synthesized via a One-Step Chemical Blowing and In Situ Activation Process

Abstract:Biomass and its derivatives, with their renewable characteristics, cost-effectiveness, and controllable structural and compositional properties, are promising precursors for carbon materials. Herein, N,O-codoped carbon aerogels were synthesized by carbonization and zinc nitrate activation of histidine. The specific surface area (SSA) was markedly increased with the addition of zinc nitrate, and the maximum value achieved 853 m2 g-1 for ZHC-11 obtained with the molar ratio of 1:1 between histidine and zinc nitrate. The D/G-band intensity ratio increased from 1.55 for the histidine-derived control sample HC to 1.65 for ZHC-11, indicating the enhancement of amorphous feature. The nitrogen content increased from 6.5% for HC to 1.60 for ZHC-11. The optimized microstructure and enriched heteroatom doping are beneficial to the capacitance performance. The optimum electrode exhibited 234.1 F g-1 at 0.1 A g-1 and maintained 116.5 F g-1 at 60 A g-1 in a three-electrode system. In particular, the symmetric supercapacitor showed 121.9 F g-1 and 19.5 Wh kg-1 at 0.2 A g-1. This research offers guidance on the cost-effective synthesis of carbon materials for supercapacitors, while also providing novel insights to realize the complete utilization of biomass derivatives.
Regulating the properties of activated carbon for supercapacitors: impact of particle size and degree of aromatization of hydrochar

Abstract:Hydrochar (HC), obtained by the hydrothermal carbonization (HTC) of biomass, is an excellent precursor for preparing activated carbon (AC). However, the effects of the intrinsic properties of HC on the microstructure and electrochemical properties of AC are largely unknown. This study investigates the impact of particle size and the degree of aromatization of in-situ HC on the microstructure and electrochemical properties of AC. Our results show that a large particle size and a high degree of aromatization help protect the HC from overactivation by ZnCl2, resulting in an large specific surface area (SSA > 2000 m2/g) and high mesopore to micropore volume ratio value ( Vmes/Vmic > 0.3) of the AC. Electrochemical performance measurements show a maximum specific capacitance of 218 F/g at 0.5 A/g was achieved in all samples where the AC (AC180-10 h) was prepared by activating HC180-10 h with a large size, a high degree of aromatization, and abundant surface oxygen-containing functional groups. After AC180-10 h was assembled into a supercapacitor, the specific capacitance of AC180-10 h still reached 158 F/g at 0.5 A/g, and it showed excellent cycling stability. This study advances the understanding of the impact of HC particle size and degree of aromatization on AC properties, providing new insights into tailoring HC qualities so that improving improve the properties of AC.

Abstract:Porous carbon as a crucial role in the electrode materials of supercapacitors (SCs) has inspired wide attentions, due to their high electrical conductivity, large specific surface area, excellent electrochemistry stability, and easy availability. Herein, we report the exploration of progressive porous carbon for SCs, which is rationally synthesized using maltose as carbon source via H 2 O bubbles puffing carbonization assisted KOH activation process. The optimized activated carbon-based architecture exhibits a large specific capacitance of 202.5 F g −1 , which is ∼160 % to that of the electrode without H 2 O bubbles puffing treatment (128.7 F g −1 ). Moreover, the as-constructed SCs possess high specific capacitance, fast charge-discharge rate, excellent rate capability, and robust cycling stability (96 % capacitance retention after 15,000 charge/discharge cycles), which are better than most of other activated carbon-based SCs ever reported, and indicating their potential application value.

Energy Sources Part A Recovery Utilization and Environmental Effects

Abstract:With the implementation of carbon neutrality, more and more researchers are devoted to the development of biomass-based porous carbon materials using agricultural and forestry wastes for energy storage applications. However, biomass-derived carbon materials are still suffering from structural instability and difficult to regulate the pore structure, so it is very essential to study the regulation of pore structure in activation process of biochar. Therefore, this work developed an approach to modulate the pore structure of biomass porous carbon. The pyrolyzed biochar was primary activated by ZnCl 2 to form the intermediate FC, and the FC was secondary activated by the impregnation method with the addition of trace KOH to form the graded porous carbon FCK- x . The prepared porous carbon exhibited a large specific surface area (2845 m 2 g −1 ) and a large pore volume (1.43 cm 3 g −1 ), which is very favorable for efficient ion transport in the three-electrode system, FCK-0.6 exhibited a specific capacitance of 321.7 F/g at 1A/g and the assembled supercapacitor exhibited high capacitance retention (95.17%) and charge retention (85%). This work provides a feasible way to modulate biomass pore structure.

Abstract:In order to achieve the purpose of regulating the pore structure characteristics of activated carbon by adjusting the experimental parameters, the effects of carbonization temperature, carbonization time, pre-activation temperature, pre-activation time and impregnation time on the pore structure of sargassum-based activated carbon (SAC) are studied by orthogonal experiment. The gravimetric capacitance of SAC and the relationship between the gravimetric capacitance and specific surface area are also studied. The results show that the SACs prepared at all experimental conditions have developed pore structure and huge specific surface area, reaching 3,122 m 2 /g. The pore size of SAC is almost all within 6 nm, in which the micropores are mainly concentrated in 0.4–0.8 nm, the mesopores are mainly concentrated in 2–4 nm, and the number of micropores is significantly higher than that of mesopores. During the preparation of SAC, the effect of carbonization temperature on the specific surface area and specific pore volume of SAC is very significant. The effect of carbonization time on the specific surface area of SAC is significant, but the effect on specific pore volume can be ignored. The effects of pre-activation temperature, pre-activation time, and impregnation time on specific surface area and specific pore volume of SAC can be ignored. In addition, SACs show good gravimetric capacitance performance as electrode material for supercapacitors, which can significantly increase the capacitance of supercapacitors and thus broaden their applications. The gravimetric capacitance and specific surface area of SACs show a good linear relationship when the activated carbons have similar material properties and pore size distribution.

Abstract:Carbon materials have been commonly studied as electrode materials in supercapacitor owing to their high stability and conductivity, controllable morphology, and wide range of sources. However, electrode materials made of carbon have a relatively low theoretical capacity. The electrochemical behavior of supercapacitors can be enhanced by enlarging the specific surface area, optimizing pore size distribution and internal pore structure of electrode materials, and doping heteroatoms. Herein, we develop a simple method for synthesizing O, N co-doped hierarchical porous carbon only through one-step carbonization. Through the synergistic effect of urea and KHCO 3 , the acquired hierarchical porous carbon has a highly interconnected porous structure, high specific surface area (2408 m 2 g −1 ), and rich surface O and N functional groups. Therefore, the obtained porous carbon delivers a high specific capacitance (359 F g −1 @ 1 A g −1 ), superior rate performance (265 F g −1 @ 50 A g −1 ) and long-term electrochemical stability in 6 M KOH electrolyte. In addition, the assembled two-electrode system shows a high energy density of 9.0 Wh kg −1 . Furthermore, the assembled zinc-ion hybrid supercapacitor also exhibits superior reversible capacity (185 mA h g −1 @ 0.2 A g −1 ) and satisfactory long-time cyclability. The outstanding electrochemical performance indicates that O, N co-doped hierarchical porous carbon materials have broad application prospects in high-performance energy devices.
