Abstract:There is a great demand for the fabrication of soft electronics using hydrogels due to their biomimetic structures and good flexibility. However, conventional hydrogels have poor mechanical properties, which restricts their applications as stretchable sensors. Herein, a facile one-step strategy is proposed to fabricate tough and conductive hydrogels by making use of the graftability of carboxymethyl chitosan without extra conductive matter and crosslinking agent. The obtained polyacrylamide/carboxymethyl chitosan composite hydrogels possess outstanding transmittance and excellent mechanical performances, with tensile breaking stress of 630 kPa, breaking strain of 4560 %, toughness of 8490 kJ/m(3). These hydrogels have low modulus of 5-20 kPa, fast recoverability after unloading, high conductivity of similar to 0.85 S/m without the addition of other conductive substances and good biocompatibility. The ionic conductivity of the gels originates from the counterions of carboxymethyl chitosan, affording the hydrogels as resistive-type sensors. The resultant hydrogel sensors demonstrate a broad strain window (0.12-1500 %), excellent linear response, high sensitivity with the gauge factor reaching 11.72, and great durability, capable of monitoring diverse human motions. This work provides a new strategy to develop stretchable conductive hydrogels with promising applications in the fields of artificial intelligence and flexible electronics.

Abstract:Self-healing, self-adhesive, and stretchable bio-based conductive hydrogels exhibit properties similar to those of biological tissues, making them an urgent requirement for emerging wearable devices. The primary challenge lies in devising straightforward strategies to accomplish all the aforementioned performances and achieve equilibrium among them. This study used the natural compound thioctic acid (TA) and modified cellulose to prepare conductive hydrogels with stretchability, healing, and self-adhesion through a simple one-step strategy. Metastable poly(TA) was obtained through ring-opening polymerization of lithiated TA, followed by the introduction of dopamine-grafted cellulose nanofibers (DCNF) to stabilize poly(TA) and prepare PTALi/DCNF hydrogels with the aforementioned properties. The hydrogels demonstrated remarkable conductivity, attributed to the existence of Li + ions, with a maximum conductivity of 17.36 mS/cm. The self-healing capacity of the hydrogels was achieved owing to the presence of disulfide bond in TA. The introduction of DCNF can effectively stabilize poly(TA), endow the hydrogel with self-adhesion ability, improve the mechanical properties, and further enhance the formability of hydrogels. Generally, bio-based PTALi/DCNF hydrogels with stretchability, self-healing, self-adhesion, and conductivity are obtained through a simple strategy and used as a sensor with a wide response range and high sensitivity. Hydrogels have significant potential for application in wearable electronic devices, electronic skins, and soft robots.

Abstract:Conductive hydrogels have been widely applied in human-computer interaction, tactile sensing, and sustainable green energy harvesting. Herein, a double cross-linked network composite hydrogel (MWCNTs/CNWs/PAM/SA) by constructing dual enhancers acting together with PAM/SA was constructed. By systematically optimizing the compositions, the hydrogel displayed features advantages of good mechanical adaptability, high conductivity sensitivity (GF = 5.65, 53 ms), low hysteresis (<11 %), and shape memory of water molecules and temperature. The nanocellulose crystals (CNWs) were bent and entangled with the backbone of the polyacrylamide/ sodium alginate (PAM/SA) hydrogel network, which effectively transferred the external mechanical forces to the entire physical and chemical cross-linking domains. Multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) were filled into the cross-linking network of the hydrogel to enhance the conductivity of the hydrogel effectively. Notably, hydrogels are designed as flexible tactile sensors that can accurately recognize and monitor electrical signals from different gesture movements and temperature changes. It was also assembled as a friction nanogenerator (TENG) that continuously generates a stable open circuit voltage (28 V) for self-powered small electronic devices. This research provides a new prospect for designing nanocellulose and MWCNTs reinforced conductive hydrogels via a facile method.
Triple physical cross-linking cellulose nanofibers-based poly(ionic liquid) hydrogel as wearable multifunctional sensors

Abstract:A novel triple physical cross-linking poly(ionic liquid) hydrogel, composed of poly(acrylamide-co-dodecyl methacrylate-co-1-vinyl-3-methyluracil-imidazolium chloride)/cellulose nanofibers-Ca2+ (PADV/CNFs-Ca2+), was synthesized through micellar-copolymerization followed by a solvent-soaked procedure. The synergistic interactions in polymer network (i.e. the hydrophobic association of dodecyl methacrylate moiety in surfactant micelles, the hydrogen bondings between imidazolium monomer segments and other monomer segments in polymers, and the ionic coordination between Ca2+ and -COO- on cellulose nanofibers surface) endowed the hydrogel with excellent mechanical properties, including high strength (754 kPa of tensile strength and 1905 kPa of compressive strength), outstanding stretchability (1963 %), elastic modulus (56.5 kPa) and remarkable mechanical durability (200 cycles with 500 % deformations and 100 cycles at 50 % compression strain). Besides, this hydrogel exhibited other advantages, such as satisfied conductivity (28.7 mS/cm), high strain/pressure/temperature-sensitive behavior, precise and stable signal transmission, varying degrees of antibacterial activity, and biocompatibility. Owing to the exceptional comprehensive performance, the hydrogel was then assembled as a multifunctional sensor to monitor the joint motion, vocal cord vibration, tactile sensation and body temperature with remarkable sensitivity in real time. This work offered a new strategy for the fabrication of durable, biocompatible, antibacterial and conductive materials for wearable multifunctional electronic devices.

Abstract:As the application of conductive hydrogels in the field of wearable smart devices is gradually deepening, a variety of hydrogel sensors with high mechanical properties, strong adhesion, fast self-healing, and excellent conductivity are emerging. However, it is still a great challenge to manufacture hydrogel sensors combining multiple properties. Herein, we leveraged the dynamic redox reaction occurring between polydopamine (PDA) and Fe3+ to induce ammonium persulfate (APS) to generate free radicals, thereby initiating the copolymerization of hydroxyethyl methacrylate (HEMA) and acrylic acid (AA) monomers. Then, polypyrrole-encapsulated cellulose nanofibers (PPy@CNF) and carboxymethylcellulose (CMC) were incorporated as conductive reinforced nanofillers and interpenetrating network skeleton. The obtained hydrogel cross-linked through reversible metal-ligand bonds, π-π stacking and abundant hydrogen bonding demonstrated great mechanical properties (strength 240.4 kPa, strain 1175 %) and self-healing ability (88.96 %). Particularly, the gel displayed ultrahigh durability and skin adhesive ability (75 kPa after 10 cycles), surpassing previous skin adhesion hydrogels. Furthermore, through the synergistic conductive effect of PPy@CNF and Fe3+, the prepared hydrogel sensor possessed high sensitivity (GF = 1.89) with a wide sensing range (~1000 %), which could realize the human body's daily motion detection, and had a promising application in flexible wearable electronics.

Abstract:Flexible biosensors made from conductive hydrogels have shown tremendous potential in health management and human-machine interfaces. Nevertheless, it remains challenging to fabricate conductive hydrogels with robust resilience and long-term stability. Herein, we report a nanocomposite conductive hydrogel prepared through one-pot radical polymerization of 3-acrylamidophenylboronic acid (APBA) and acrylamide (AM) in the presence of Laponite XLG nanosheets (XLG) stabilized carbon nanotubes (CNTs). Owing to the existence of various non-covalent interactions within the network (B-N coordination, hydrogen bond, and polymer chain entanglement), the hydrogels feature splendid mechanical properties with tensile strength of 252-323 kPa, fracture strain of 880-1200%, Young's modulus of 48-50 kPa and fracture energy of 911-1078 J m-2, and exhibit robust elasticity and fatigue resistance during 1000 consecutive tensile and compressive cycles. The hydrogels show remarkable sensing performances (gauge factor up to 9.43), broad sensing range of strain (1-300%) and pressure (1-80 kPa), enabling reliable and accurate monitoring of large and tiny motions in daily human life. Moreover, the conductive hydrogels could not only accelerate skin incision healing but also act as smart wearable sensors to monitor the skin wound healing process by detection of local temperature changes.

Abstract:Currently, with the widespread concerns of smart soft sensors in wearable electronics, human health detection and electronic skin, flexible conductive hydrogels have been extensively studied. However, it remains a great challenge to develop hydrogels that have both satisfactory mechanical performance with stretchable and compressible and high conductive. Herein, based on synergistic dynamic hydrogen and metal coordination bonds, polyvinyl alcohol (PVA)/poly (2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate) (PHEMA) hydrogels doped with polypyrrole decorated cellulose nanofibers (CNFs@PPy) are developed via free radical polymerization. The loading versatile CNFs@PPy highlighted the complex hydrogels super-stretchability (approximately 2600 % elongation) and excellent toughness (2.74 MJ/m<sup>3</sup>) properties to tensile deformation, strong compressive strength (1.96 MPa), fast temperature responsiveness and outstanding strain sensing capability (GF = 3.13). Moreover, the PHEMA/PVA/CNFs@PPy hydrogels possessed rapid self-healing and powerful adhesive abilities to various interfaces without extra assistance, as well as distinguished fatigue resistance performance. Such advantages make the nanocomposite hydrogel displayed high stability and repeatable to both pressure and strain in a wide range of deformations, enabling a promising candidate in the fields of motion monitoring and healthcare management.

Abstract:Conductive composite hydrogels as artificial skin-like materials are receiving much attention because they hold great potential applications in personalized healthcare. However, to design and prepare a versatile material simultaneously possessing such multi-functions still remains a challenge. Herein, a robust, self-healing and self-adhesive conductive hydrogel was fabricated via forming dynamic coordination bonds between tannic acid-decorated cellulose nanocrystals (TA@CNC), partially reduced graphene oxide (pRGO) nanosheets and polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) network. The catechol groups from tannic acid imparts the hydrogel with self-adhesive capability to various substrates. Besides, the mechanical strength and electrical conductivity of the hydrogels was well balanced by incorporation of pRGO component, endowing the hydrogel with robustness and good electrical conductivity as well as decent strain-sensitivity. Benefiting from all these advantages, the conductive nanocomposite hydrogel could be used as flexible strain sensors monitoring both large (e.g., joints bending) and subtle (e.g., voice detection) human motion, in real-time. The currently reported hydrogel design gives a new perspective for the preparation of high-performance cellulose-based hydrogels that hold great potential for practical applications in wearable electronic sensors and healthcare monitoring.

Abstract:Conductive hydrogels have been widely studied for the potential application as wearable sensors due to their flexibility and biocompatibility. However, the simultaneous incorporation of excellent stretchability, toughness, conductivity, self-healing, and adhesion via a simple method remains a grand challenge. Herein, a multifunctional hydrogel with self-adhesion, self-healing, conductivity, and mechanical properties was fabricated by ion cross-linking chitosan (CS), acrylic acid (AA) polymer, and tea polyphenols (TP) in the presence of graphitized carbon nanotubes (CNTs) in this work. The resultant hydrogel has a unique self-healing property (94.11% for strain self-healing and 90.60% for stress self-healing) and mechanical properties. The fracture stress was 0.075 MPa with the strain was 1184%, and the toughness reaches 0.48 MJ/m3. The synergistic effect of free ions and CNTs endows the hydrogel excellent electrical conductivity (6.67 S·m-1). Moreover, the hydrogel can adhere to various organic and inorganic materials. It exhibits repeatable self-adhesion to human skin and can be peeled off completely without any residual, irritation or allergic reactions. Additionally, the hydrogel also has good strain sensitivity and stable output signals in motion monitoring of human body as biosensor. Therefore, this work provides a new prospect for the design of multifunctional hydrogels for potential applications in wearable biosensors.

Abstract:Hydrogels capable of transparent and conductive behaviors are promising materials for flexible electronics. The individual increase of conducting units always produces a decrease on their transparency, leading to limited application scope. Here, a high-performance hydrogel sensor with high transparency as well as multi-responsive self-healability is developed through in situ polymerization combined with ultra-low content (1.08×10 -4 wt%) of carboxyl multi-walled carbon nanotubes (c-MWCNTs) and self-assembled catechin nanoparticles (NPs) as the electron bridging agents. Since the substantial interfacial interactions including π-π and hydrogen bonds and markedly decreased contact resistance between c-MWCNTs, the target hydrogel exhibits high transparency of 90% at 550 nm and good conductivity of 0.19 S/m. Besides, the target hydrogel delivers series of smart behaviors including outstanding biocompatibility, remarkable notch-insensitivity, strong adhesion, multi-responsive self-healing property and electromechanical stability ranging from 0.1% to high strain of 900%. These prominent performance merits make this emerging hydrogel sensor highly potential in the next-generation flexible and wearable electronics.

Abstract:A novel semi‐interpenetrating network polyacrylamide/phenylboronic acid‐ionic liquid/cellulose nanofibril hydrogel (PAM/PBA‐IL/CNF) is proposed based on a "tailor‐made" PBA‐IL with multiple roles. Benefiting from the ingenious structural design, the PAM/PBA‐IL/CNF simultaneously displays the excellent comprehensive merits: (i) a fine trade‐off between electrical and mechanical performance, (ii) high strain sensitivity, favorable adhesion, self‐healing property, transparency and water retention. Ionic conductive hydrogels (ICHs) integrate the conductive performance and soft nature of tissue‐like materials to imitate the features of human skin with mechanical and sensory traits; thus, they are considered promising substitutes for conventional rigid metallic conductors when fabricating human‐motion sensors. However, the simultaneous incorporation of excellent stretchability, toughness, ionic conductivity, self‐healing, and adhesion via a simple method remains a grand challenge. Herein, a novel ICH platform is proposed by designing a phenylboronic acid‐ionic liquid (PBA‐IL) with multiple roles that simultaneously realize the highly mechanical, electrical, and versatile properties. This elaborately designed semi‐interpenetrating network ICH is fabricated via a facile one‐step approach by introducing cellulose nanofibrils (CNFs) into the PBA‐IL/acrylamide cross‐linked network. Ingeniously, the dynamic boronic ester bonds and physical interactions (hydrogen bonds and electrostatic interactions) of the cross‐linked network endow these hydrogels with remarkable stretchability (1810 ± 38%), toughness (2.65 ± 0.03 MJ m−3), self‐healing property (92 ± 2% efficiency), adhesiveness, and transparency. Moreover, the construction of this material shows that CNFs can synergistically enhance mechanical performance and conductivity. The wide working strain range (≈1000%) and high sensitivity (GF = 8.36) make this ICH a promising candidate for constructing the next generation of gel‐based strain sensor platforms.

Abstract:Hydrogel-based wearable devices have attracted tremendous interest due to their potential applications in electronic skins, soft robotics, and sensors. However, it is still a challenge for hydrogel-based wearable devices to be integrated with high conductivity, a self-healing ability, remoldability, self-adhesiveness, good mechanical strength and high stretchability, good biocompatibility, and stimulus-responsiveness. Herein, multifunctional conductive composite hydrogels were fabricated by a simple one-pot method based on poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA), sodium alginate (SA), and tannic acid (TA) using borax as a cross-linker. The composite hydrogel network was built by borate ester bonds and hydrogen bonds. The obtained hydrogel exhibited pH- and sugar-responsiveness, high stretchability (780% strain), and fast self-healing performance with healing efficiency (HE) as high as 93.56% without any external stimulus. Additionally, the hydrogel displayed considerable conductive behavior and stable changes of resistance with high sensitivity (gauge factor (GF) = 15.98 at a strain of 780%). The hydrogel was further applied as a strain sensor for monitoring large and tiny human motions with durable stability. Significantly, the healed hydrogel also showed good sensing behavior. This work broadens the avenue for the design and preparation of biocompatible polymer-based hydrogels to promote the application of hydrogel sensors with comfortable wearing feel and high sensitivity.

Abstract:In recent years, conductive hydrogels have been designed as flexible sensors with broad application prospects in the field of smart wearable devices. However, the coordination of the mechanical properties, self‐healing capability, and conductivity of hydrogels has always been a challenge. In this work, a multifunctional conductive hydrogel with self‐adhesive, re‐shapeable, and rapid self‐healing abilities (PB‐PACS‐PM3 (self‐healing efficiency) = 98.8% in 15 s) was prepared by incorporating protocatechualdehyde modified carboxymethyl chitosan (PA@o‐CMCS) and PDA‐modified MXene (PDA@MXene) into the interchain of polyvinyl alcohol through dynamic borate ester crosslinking. The dynamic Schiff base reaction not only effectively introduced o‐CMCS as a mechanical enhancer but also improved the viscoelasticity and self‐healing capability of the hydrogel through the dual dynamic bond crosslinking structure. The PDA@MXene nanosheets are uniformly distributed in the hydrogel, providing the composite system with excellent conductivity (the conductivity of PB‐PACS‐PM3 hydrogel is 1.5 S/m) and strain sensitivity (the response time and recovery time of the hydrogel sensor are 230 and 260 ms, respectively), while the tensile strength of the hydrogel is improved to 0.035 MPa. Due to all these advantages, this conductive hydrogel can be assembled into flexible wearable sensors for rapid and accurate monitoring of various physiological activities of the human body, such as finger, wrist, elbow, and knee bending vibrations, among others.

Abstract:Recently, materials with complicated environmentally-sensitive abilities, high stretchability and excellent conductive sensitivity are interesting actuators in future applications. Herein, we fabricated a versatile and facile polyvinyl alcohol/polyacrylic acid/dialdehyde cellulose nanofibrils-Fe 3+ hydrogel integrated with programmable dual-shape memory properties, high mechanical strength, good recoverability, and heat-induced self-healing capability. Benefiting from the synergistic effect of hydrogen bonds and dual metal coordination bonds of cellulose-based dialdehyde and carboxyl with Fe 3+ and then heating-freeze-thawing cycle treatment, the obtained hydrogel exhibited dual shape memory abilities, high tensile strain (up to 600 %), good self-recovery, and anti-fatigue properties. Moreover, the resultant hydrogel sensors showed revealed high strain sensitivity (gauge factor = 2.95) and satisfactory electrochemical performance; and such hydrogel-based sensor could be used as ionic skin to detect various human motions in real-time and barrier-free communication in the aquatic environment. The composite hydrogel with superior and versatile performances reported in this study could offer a great promise to be applied under extreme conditions as multifunctional sensors.

Abstract:Chitosan-based hydrogels, as natural high-molecular-weight flexible materials, are widely utilized due to their outstanding properties. In this research, we developed a one-pot method for synthesizing a novel PVA/CS@PPy-PDAx% conductive hydrogel and explored the internal bonding patterns through molecular dynamics simulations. By adding PPy-PDA nanoparticles into a hydrogel matrix, an interpenetrating conductive network established successfully. The uniform distribution of PPy-PDA nanoparticles endowed the hydrogel with good electrical conductivity (0.171 S/m), significantly enhanced mechanical properties, and strain sensing (S = 5.04), as well as near-infrared photothermal responsiveness (temperature increase of 41.9 °C within 30 s). Additionally, due to the hydrogel's significant photothermal conversion efficiency under near-infrared radiation, it exhibits rapid elimination of Escherichia coli with an antibacterial efficiency exceeding 90 %. The unique hydrogen-bonded crosslinked structure provides the hydrogel with excellent re-healing properties, allowing for restoration through a freeze-thaw process after damage. The conductivity remains nearly unchanged after re-healing, maintaining the material's integrity and functionality. The flexible sensor based on this hydrogel has a response time of 100 ms and can sensitively detect large-scale deformations (e.g., joint bending at various angles), different gravitational forces, and recognize human handwriting. These characteristics make this hydrogel a promising candidate for advancing intelligent wearable technologies and human-machine interaction systems.
Simple Fabrication of Silica Amino Sphere-Reinforced Ionic Liquids/Graphene Conductive Hydrogel Sensors with Super Toughness, Self-Healing, and Strain Sensitivity Properties

Abstract:Conductive hydrogels have gained considerable interest in their potential applications in fields such as soft robotics, electronic devices, and wearable technology. However, their widespread use has been limited due to the inherent brittleness of conventional hydrogels. In response to this challenge, we have engineered a multifunctional conductive hydrogel, characterized by dual physical cross-linking networks, using a simple, one-pot method. Our design incorporates acrylamide (AM), lauryl methacrylate (LMA), graphene (GN), silica amino spheres (SiO2-NH2), and 1-hexadecyl-3-methylimidazole chloride (ILs). Notably, the LMA, SiO2-NH2 spheres, and AM play key roles in energy dissipation through hydrophobic association and hydrogen bonding, serving as dynamic cross-linking points. This structural configuration endows our resultant PAM@SiO2-NH2/(ILs-GN) hydrogels with impressive tensile strains, peaking at an extraordinary 15,318%, along with super toughness measuring 51.4 MJ/m3 and self-healing capabilities. Moreover, the ILs facilitate effective dispersion of graphene, leading to superior conductivity and stable resistance changes in the hydrogel, with a conductivity measurement of 12 mS/cm. The hydrogel also demonstrates high sensitivity, with a gauge factor of 18.94 at a strain of 1200%. When implemented as a strain sensor, the hydrogel capably monitors a broad spectrum of human movements in real time, capturing both large-scale deformation and minute, nuanced motions. The culmination of these findings suggests the immense potential of our hydrogel sensors for use in flexible electronic skin applications, establishing them as promising candidates for multifunctional sensors and flexible electrodes.

Abstract:Hydrogels have received increasing interest as a flexible material. However, the integration of multiple functions into one hydrogel remains a great challenge. For the application of hydrogels in the field of biosensors, both rigidity and toughness of hydrogels are usually necessary. Herein, a kind of multifunctional hydrogel with a combination of ideal properties, including transparency, fatigue resistance, flexibility, conductivity, self-adhesive and low contact impedance is designed. The hydrogel is prepared via a one-pot method by polymerizing the monomers acrylic acid (AA), acrylamide (AM) and [2-(Methacryloyloxy) ethyl] dimethyl-(3-sulfo-propyl) ammonium hydroxide (SBMA) under UV light to form a copolymer. The chemical cross-linking and hydrogen bonding jointly impart the hydrogel with good fatigue resistance and flexibility. Furthermore, the hydrogel can adhere to a wide range of substrate surfaces through intermolecular forces and give precise, stable and clear ECG signals when detecting small physical movements. It is believed that the designed hydrogel will show great prospects in wearable devices and biosensors.

Abstract:Hydrogel flexible sensors are gaining significant interest due to their distinct biocompatibility, flexibility, and unique features of being adjustable and injectable, but there are still problems of poor self‐healing performance and low conductivity in the current stage of research. In this work, a prefabricated blending method was used to construct a dual‐network system using polyacrylamide (PAM), carboxymethyl chitosan (CMCS), and tannin acid (TA), and ferric ions (Fe3+) were introduced to apply ionically conductive organic hydrogels to flexible sensors. The PAM/CMCS‐Fe3+/TA hydrogels have good fatigue resistance and self‐healing properties, and their conductivity is as high as 6.42 S/m. This hydrogel‐based sensor for strain sensing purpose offers a lot of promise for flexible sensor applications since it can provide steady, dependable, and repeatable electrical impulses.

Abstract:In this study, we proposed a self-healing conductive hydrogel based on polysaccharides and Li+ to serve as flexible sensors. At first, the oxidized sodium alginate (OSA) was obtained through the oxidation reaction of sodium alginate (SA). Then OSA, carboxymethyl chitosan (CMC), and agarose (AGO) were dissolved in LiCl solution, respectively. Finally, the hydrogel was obtained through heating, mixing, and cooling processes. Because of the Schiff base structure and hydrogen bonding, the hydrogel demonstrates good mechanical and self-healing properties. The presence of Li+ provides good conductivity for the hydrogel. In addition, we demonstrated the application of the hydrogel as the flexible sensors. It can perceive the process of pressing Morse code with the index finger as a pressure sensor and monitor sliding movement of the thumb as the strain sensor to browse the web with the mobile phone. Thus, the self-healing conductive hydrogel may have potential applications in flexible wearable sensors.
