Abstract:A new borate chloride, Li2B5O8Cl, has been obtained. It exhibits complicated interpenetrating 3D B–O frameworks composed of the functional building block (FBB) [B5O10], enriching the structural diversity of B–O configurations. The theoretical study indicates that the birefringence is estimated to be 0.026 at 1064 nm. Meanwhile, the structure-property relationships were analyzed through the first-principles calculation with a bandgap of 5.737 eV for GGA and 6.880 eV for HSE06, and the electronic properties of each group are analyzed by the density of states (DOS).

Abstract:Pb 2 Al 2 B 3 O 8 F 3 has finite chain-like [B 3 O 8 ] 7− groups, which enriches the structural chemistry of borates. Calculations show that Pb 2 Al 2 B 3 O 8 F 3 has moderate birefringence, and it also has a short UV cutoff edge and a large band gap.

Abstract:A new noncentrosymmetric strontium borate, P1‐Sr2[B5O8(OH)]2·[B(OH)3]·H2O (1), has been synthesized under the hydrothermal condition. The P1‐Sr2[B5O8(OH)]2·[B(OH)3]·H2O shows a layered B‐O network with 9‐ring windows in the ab plane. Sr2+ cations, H3BO3, and H2O molecules are located in the voids of layers and interlayers, respectively. The P1‐Sr2[B5O8(OH)]2·[B(OH)3]·H2O is the first synthetic phase of veatchite, while the other three polymorphs are found in different natural minerals. This strontium borate is a potential deep‐ultraviolet‐transparent nonlinear‐optical (NLO) crystal whose second‐harmonic‐generation (SHG) intensity is 1.7 times that of KH2PO4 (KDP) and is phase‐matchable. The short wavelength cutoff edge of compound 1 is below 190 nm. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations show that the B–O units are responsible for the nonlinear optical property.

Abstract:A new borate compound-Ba_(0.87)Sr_(3.13)B_(14)O_(25) was reported in the paper. The crystal with sizes of 35mm×25mm×5mm was grown by the Kyropoulos method, and the structure was determined by single crystal X-ray diffraction. The compound crystallizes in the monoclinic system, space group C2/m, with 4 formula units in a cell of dimensions a=1.6425(3)nm,b=0.77739(16)nm,c=1.6665(3)nm,β=119.22(3)°. The borate network can be described as a three dimensional linkage of B_3O_8 six-member single rings connected by O atoms and BO_3 triangles,and the barium and strontium atoms fit into channels of this network. The transmittance spectrum of the crystal was measured, and the microhardness is 578kg/mm~2.

Abstract:The discovery of new borates with unique structures has always been a growing part of solid-state chemistry, especially for polyborates. Herein, a new aluminoborate, Cs3AlB6O12, has been discovered by a high-temperature solution in a vacuum system. The highly polymerized [B12O24] cluster, unlike the annular configuration in previously reported polyborates, is found in Cs3AlB6O12 for the first time. The different linkage reflected by the local symmetry in cluster makes these borates not isotypic, although the formula of [B12O24] is identical. A Deep-UV Nonlinear Optical Borosulfate with Incommensurate Modulations

Abstract:Despite borate-sulfates composed of isolated borate and sulfate groups have been discovered for more than one century, borosulfates of B-O-S bonding have not been synthesized until 2012 and their properties remain rarely explored. Here, we report a new borosulfate, namely LiRb4[B(SO4)(4)], which shows potential as a bran-new class of deep-UV nonlinear optical (NLO) material. Remarkably, according to the in situ single-crystal X-ray diffraction, LiRb4[B(SO4)(4)] undergoes successive first-order phase transitions with incommensurate structural modulations under room temperature and low temperature with (3 + 1)D superspace groups of X2(alpha 0 gamma)0 and P2(1)(alpha 0 gamma)0, respectively. The first-principle calculations and structural analyses reveal that NLO properties, phase transitions, and incommensurate modulations are closely related to the [B(SO4)(4)](5-) super-tetrahedral units with B-O-S bonding. We anticipate that the unprecedented coexistence of deep-UV transparency, NLO responses, and incommensurate structural modulations in one borosulfate will bring new possibilities to understand the underlying concepts of physics and chemistry in aperiodic materials.

Abstract:Borates, as advanced optical materials, have garnered wide interest due to their diverse structural configurations and great potential for applications in the ultraviolet (UV) regions. Herein, we synthesized a new rare-earth borate crystal, namely, K2NaYB2O6, which is classified as one of the ABReB2O6 compounds, where A and B represent alkali metal and Re denotes rare-earth metal. K2NaYB2O6 adopts in the monoclinic space group P21/c (No. 14), showcasing a three-dimensional (3D) framework composed of a planar triangular configuration of [BO3] units and distortive [YO7] polyhedra. Notably, both dihedral angles between distinct [BO3] units reach 79.6°, which represents an unprecedented structural feature in monoclinic ABReB2O6-type crystals. Moreover, the compound has a short UV absorption edge at around 204 nm, corresponding to a wide band gap of approximately 5.67 eV. Additionally, it possesses a moderate birefringence of 0.028 at 1064 nm. Further analysis utilizing theoretical calculations suggests that the optical behaviors of K2NaYB2O6 are mainly governed by its basic structural unit [BO3] triangles and distorted [YO7] polyhedra. These findings enrich the structure chemistry of rare-earth borates and offer valuable insights for the design of optical crystals in the UV wavelength range.

Abstract:A new mixed borate and carbonate Sr5(CO3)2(BO3)2, which is isostructural with Ba4M(BO3)2(CO3)2 (M = Ba, Sr), has been synthesized by hydrothermal method. It crystallizes in Pnma (No. 61) space group with the lattice parameters a = 7.387(4), b = 16.556(9) and c = 8.971(5) Å (Z = 4). This structure features a three-dimensional (3D) network including SrO8 polyhedra, isolated BO3 and CO3 triangles. UV-Vis-NIR diffuse reflectance spectrum for Sr5(CO3)2(BO3)2 indicates that it has a deep ultra-violet cut-off edge of 190 nm. In addition, crystal structural comparison among mixed borates and carbonates shows that the interaction between boron-oxide groups and CO3 groups leads to different arrangements of anionic groups, which can be classified into three types according to the connection of boron-oxide groups. An analysis of theoretical calculations based on density functional theory was also performed to understand the relationships between the structures and properties.

Abstract:The first chloroaluminoborate, CsAlB 3 O 6 Cl, with innovative AlO 3 Cl tetrahedra and a perfect planar arrangement of [B 3 O 6 ] groups, was structurally designed and synthesized via chlorination of [AlO 4 ] tetrahedra. Abstract:Borates are favored by material scientists and chemists because of the significant electronegativity difference between B and O atoms and their flexible assembly modes resulting in abundant structures and excellent properties. For the design of deep-ultraviolet (DUV) optical crystals with excellent macroscopic performance, it is crucial to choose appropriate cations and anionic groups, and microscopically reasonable assembly patterns. Herein, by introducing covalent tetrahedra ([MO4], M = Mg, Al), two new mixed alkali metals and alkaline earth metals borates, Rb3MgB5O10 and LiBaAl(BO3)2, were synthesized using the melt method and high-temperature solution method. They contain M-B-O two-dimensional (2D) layers (2∞[MgB5O10] and 2∞[Al(BO3)2], respectively) composed of isolated B-O groups ([B5O10]5- and [BO3]3-, respectively) and metal-centered tetrahedral connectors ([MgO4]6- and [AlO4]5-, respectively). Combining experiments and theoretical calculations shows that the two compounds have short cutoff edges (<200 nm) and moderate birefringences. Further analysis manifests that the isolated [MO4] covalent tetrahedra can optimize the arrangement of anion groups, guarantee the balanced optical properties of materials, and points out the direction for further exploration of novel borate structures.

Abstract:A case of hydrous borate with the formula of Ba2B13O19(OH)5·5H2O was synthesized by the traditional hydrothermal method. It crystallizes in the chiral P1 space group and has a unique two-dimensional 2[B13O19(OH)5]∞ layer that is constructed by the hydrogen involved [B13O22(OH)5] fundamental building blocks (FBBs). The Ba atoms and H2O molecules are filled in the three-dimensional pore constructed by the 2[B13O19(OH)5]∞ layer. Interestingly, Ba2B13O19(OH)5·5H2O is the first case of hydrous borates that has the above rare [B13O22(OH)5] FBB and 2[B13O19(OH)5]∞ layer, which enriching the structural chemistry of borate system. The diffuse reflection spectrum result shows that the ultraviolet (UV) cutoff edge of Ba2B13O19(OH)5·5H2O is below 200 nm. Its second harmonic generation (SHG) response is approximately 1.0 times that of potassium dihydrogen phosphate at the 1064 nm fundamental wavelength and it is also phase-matchable. Both results indicate that the title compound is a nonlinear optical crystal for UV spectral region. Theoretical simulation calculation shows that the occupied VE states are mainly contributed by the O-2p orbitals, and therefore [B13O22(OH)5] groups are the main sources of SHG effects.

Abstract:Two borates, K3Al2B11O21 (KABO) and K3Al2MoB9O21 (KAMBO), with edge-sharing [BO4] (ES-[BO4]) tetrahedra and different B-O configuration in one structure, were rationally designed and prepared at atmospheric pressure by introducing covalent tetrahedra. KABO is the first borate identified to have ES-[BO4] tetrahedra and two different dimensional B-O groups, namely, isolated [B6O12] groups with ES-[BO4] and one-dimensional 1∞[B5O9] infinite chains. In addition, KAMBO is a rare borate that features ES-[BO4] tetrahedra and two distinct isolated B-O groups ([B6O12] and [B3O6]). The discovery of these two compounds not only enriches the structures of borates, but also suggests a novel method for creating borates with ES-[BO4] tetrahedral structures and flexible B-O configuration at atmospheric pressure.
