Abstract:Low-work-function metal oxides as cathode interlayers are widely used in polymer organic solar cells (PSCs), but the surface defect and intrinsic photocatalysis issues severely affect the high efficiency, thickness insensitivity, and stability of PSCs. In this work, we used organosilica nanodots (OSiNDs) to modify ZnO as cathode interlayers via the self-assembly method. The ZnO/OSiNDs bilayer can acquire a suitable work function and a high conductivity of 5.87 × 10–4 S m–1. Through systematic studies, there is stable surface coordination interaction of Zn–N bonding between ZnO and OSiNDs. In i-PSCs, using D18:Y6 as the active layer, the ZnO/OSiNDs-based device achieves the best PCE of 17.87%. More importantly, due to the high conductivity, the PCE for the device based on a 68 nm thick ZnO/OSiNDs interlayer is still high up to 16.53%, while the PCE for the device based on a 66 nm thick ZnO interlayer is only 13.18%. For photostability, the PCE of the device based on the ZnO/OSiNDs interlayer maintains 95% of its original value after continuous AM 1.5G illumination (contains UV light) at 100 mW/cm2 for 600 min, while that of the ZnO-based device only maintains 72% of the original value. This work suggests that ZnO/OSiNDs can be utilized as a cathode interlayer to fabricate highly efficient and stable PSC over a wide range of thicknesses.

Abstract:The performance and industrial viability of organic photovoltaics are strongly influenced by the functionality and stability of interface layers. Many of the interface materials most commonly used in the lab are limited in their operational stability or their materials cost and are frequently not transferred toward large‐scale production and industrial applications. In this work, an advanced aqueous‐solution‐processed cathode interface layer is demonstrated based on cost‐effective organosilica nanodots (OSiNDs) synthesized via a simple one‐step hydrothermal reaction. Compared to the interface layers optimized for inverted organic solar cells (i‐OSCs), the OSiNDs cathode interlayer shows improved charge carrier extraction and excellent operational stability for various model photoactive systems, achieving a remarkably high power conversion efficiency up to 17.15%. More importantly, the OSiNDs' interlayer is extremely stable under thermal stress or photoillumination (UV and AM 1.5G) and undergoes no photochemical reaction with the photoactive materials used. As a result, the operational stability of inverted OSCs under continuous 1 sun illumination (AM 1.5G, 100 mW cm−2) is significantly improved by replacing the commonly used ZnO interlayer with OSiND‐based interfaces.

Abstract:In this work, we used three amino-containing silane molecules (APTMS, DAMO, AEEA) to synthesis organosilicon nanodots (OSiNDs-AP, OSiNDs-DA, and OSiNDs-AE) by one-step hydrothermal, respectively. The OSiNDs were used as cathode interlayer (CIL) in organic solar cells (OSCs). The OSiNDs-AE decreased the work function of ITO cathode and enhanced the charge carrier extraction without high-temperature annealing, resulting higher devices performance (PCE = 15.45%). Meanwhile, the OSiNDs-AE based OSCs with PM6:Y6 exhibited highly improved light stability compared with the device based on ZnO CIL.

Abstract:The interface layer greatly affects the performance of organic solar cells (OSCs). In this paper, we selected an amino-containing silane molecule (AEEA) and four fluorescein molecules with different functional groups to prepare a series of cathode interface materials based on organosilica nanodots (OSiNDs) by one-step hydrothermal synthesis, in order to research the impact of functional groups on the performance of OSC devices. The good film crystallinity and carrier mobility without high-temperature annealing endowed the OSCs with high V oc and J sc, and the best efficiency of 15.91% was reached with the OSi-ErB cathode interlayer. Moreover, compared with ZnO devices, OSiND-based devices showed highly improved light stability after UV irradiation.

Abstract:Solution‐processed zinc oxide (ZnO) is one of the widely used electron transporting layers (ETLs) for organic solar cells (OSCs). However, low optical transparency along with thickness‐sensitivity of ZnO ETL constrains the improvement of photovoltaic performance and large‐scale fabrication compatibility. To resolve these issues, zirconium (Zr) doping is applied to tailor the optoelectronic and morphological properties of ZnO layer. This approach not only improves light transmittance with the suppressed parasitic absorption, but also provides an optimized surface morphology for enhancing charge extraction property and reducing potential of charge trap‐assisted recombination. By using ZnO:Zr as ETL in inverted device configuration, the maximum power conversion efficiency (PCE) of PM6:Y6:PC71BM solar cell devices is up to 17.2%, which makes an enhancement of 9.55% compared to ZnO‐based devices (15.7%). As the thickness of ZnO:Zr ETL increases to ≈60 nm, the presence of the lower parasitic absorption together with uniform surface morphology can help photovoltaic performance maintain above 15%, which is beyond the performance of the pristine ZnO‐based device achieving only 11.9%. Such superiority of ZnO:Zr ETL is also validated by a series of well‐known BHJ systems, where in comparison with the devices based on pristine ZnO ETL, a better photovoltaic performance from ZnO:Zr device can be achieved.

Abstract:Organic solar cells (OSCs) based on an inverted architecture generally have better stability compared to those based on a standard architecture. However, the photoactive area of the inverted solar cells increases under ultraviolet (UV) or solar illuminatiom because of the too-high conductivity of the UV-illuminated zinc oxide (ZnO) interlayer. This limits the potential of the inverted solar cells for industrial applications. Herein, lithium-doped ZnO (Li-ZnO) films are employed as the cathode interlayer to construct inverted OSCs. The incorporation of Li ions is found to reduce the lateral conductivity of the UV-treated ZnO films because of the presence of Li ions, preventing the high-quality-growth of ZnO nanocrystals. This addresses the problem of having too-high conductivity in the UV-treated ZnO layer, causing the increased photoactive area of inverted solar cells. The overall performance of the solar cell is shown to be higher after the incorporation of Li ions in the ZnO layer, mainly due to the increased fill factor (FF), originating from the reduced trap-assisted recombination losses. Finally, the inverted solar cells based on the Li-ZnO interlayer are demonstrated to have a much better long-term stability, as compared to those based on ZnO. This allows the ZnO-based interlayers to be used for the mass production of organic solar cell modules.

Designed Polar Cosolvent‐Prepared Zinc Oxide Film for Efficient and Stable Inverted Organic Solar Cells

Abstract:A novel solvent optimization approach is used to improve the efficiency and stability of inverted OSCs by utilizing the polar cosolvent DMF to prepare ZnO layers. The incorporation of polar cosolvent DMF not only facilitated the sustainable formation of the crucial intermediate Zn (OH)2, but also contributed to reducing vacancy defects and eliminating amine residues in DMF‐ZnO bulk films, thereby significantly decreasing the photocatalytic effect in corresponding devices. Here, a simple method of applying dimethylformamide (DMF) as cosolvent in the sol‐gel technology is used to improve the quality of ZnO bulk films. First‐principles calculations show that with the addition of polar solvent DMF, the adsorption energy (Eads) between the solvent and Zn(OH)2 increases from −1.42 to −1.74 eV, which can stabilize the existence of Zn(OH)2, thereby promoting the ZnO synthesis. Besides, the elimination of amine residues in the DMF‐ZnO film significantly suppress the photocatalytic activity induced by amine‐induced coordination or redox reactions. Inverted organic solar cells (OSCs) based on PM6:Y6 and PM6:BTP‐eC9 achieves impressive power conversion efficiencies (PCE) of 17.58 and 18.14%, respectively. Furthermore, benefiting from the reduced defects of bulk ZnO, pseudo‐bilayer bulk heterojunction (PBHJ) devices based on the optimized ZnO film exhibited superior stability, the PM6:Y6 devices based on DMF‐ZnO ETLs can maintain 90.28% of their initial PCE after 1000 h of thermal aging at 85 °C, and 80.98% of their initial PCE after 168 h of UV aging. This simple solvent optimization strategy can significantly improve the charge transport of ZnO bulk films, making it a reliable strategy for the preparation of electron transport layers in OSCs.

Abstract:In this work, we study the modification effect on the performance of organic solar cells (OSCs) by introducing the ZnO dual doped by Al(NO3)3:PEIE cathod interlayer. The results showed that, with a proper doping concentration, the Al(NO3)3 doped ZnO (ZnO:Al), PEIE doped ZnO (ZnO:PEIE) and Al(NO3)3:PEIE dual doped ZnO (ZnO:Al:PEIE) cathode interlayers all exhibited the superiority for their application on inverted organic solar cells (iOSCs), due to their reduced work function (WF), better properties of electron transport, smoother interface contact between the electrode and active layer, thus leading to improvement of device performance. Based on PTB7-Th:PC71BM, the power conversion efficiency (PCE) got dramatically increased to 9.51% with PEIE:Al dual-doped ZnO, compared to the reference PCE of 8.27% with pure ZnO.

Abstract:Electron transport layers (ETLs) play a pivotal role in determining the efficiency and stability of inverted structure organic solar cells (OSCs). Zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnO NPs) are commonly used as ETLs due to their mild deposition conditions and compatibility with flexible plastic substrates, facilitating scalable manufacturing. In this study, we introduce a molecule called NMO, which serves a dual purpose: efficiently dispersing ZnO nanoparticles and acting as a surface modification layer for ZnO NPs thin films. The hybrid ETL created by blending and surface modification with NMO significantly enhances both the efficiency and stability of OSCs. Inverted structure OSCs, based on the PM6:Y6 system and utilizing the hybrid ETL, achieve impressive power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 18.31%. Moreover, these devices demonstrate exceptional stability during shelf storage ( T 80 = 19,650 h), thermal aging ( T 80 = 7783 h), and maximum power point tracking ( T 80 = 3009 h). Importantly, the hybrid ETL exhibits good generality, as all tested OSCs utilizing it display significantly improved efficiencies and stabilities. Notably, a PCE of 19.23% is attained for the PM6:BTP-eC9-based device, marking the highest reported efficiency for inverted single-junction OSCs to date.

Abstract:Indium tin oxide (ITO) is a transparent conductive material which is extensively used in organic solar cells (OSCs) as electrodes. In inverted OSCs, ITO is usually employed as a cathode, which should be modified by cathode buffer layers (CBLs) to achieve better contact with the active layers. In this paper, an amine group functionalized fullerene derivative (DMAPA-C-60) is used as a CBL to modify the transparent cathode ITO in inverted OSCs based on PTB7 as a donor and PC71BM as an acceptor. Compared with traditional ZnO CBL, DMAPA-C-60 exhibited comparable transmittance. OSCs based on DMAPA-C-60 show much better device performance compared with their ZnO counterparts (power conversion efficiencies (PCEs) improved from 6.24 to 7.43%). This is mainly because a better contact between the DMAPA-C-60 modified ITO and the active layer is formed, which leads to better electron transport and collection. Nanoscale morphologies also demonstrate that the surface of DMAPA-C-60-modified ITO is plainer than the ZnO counterparts, which also leads to the better device performance.
Nonconjugated Self-Doped Polymer Zwitterions as Efficient Interlayers for High Performance Organic Solar Cells

Abstract:Polymer zwitterions are more promising cathode interlayers (CILs) for fused-ring electron acceptor (FREA)-based organic solar cells (OSCs) than amine-containing CILs and polyelectrolytes. However, they usually suffer from high synthetic cost and low electron mobilities. Herein, we present a novel strategy that combines the n-type doping effect with polymer zwitterions to develop a new nonconjugated self-doped polymer zwitterion (s-PZ), namely, PDI- M -DAN. PDI- M -DAN is afforded via cost-effective transition-metal-free polymerization and exhibits 200-fold higher electron mobility than the nondoped reference, thus making it an efficient and thickness-insensitive CIL for FREA-based OSCs. Power conversion efficiencies (PCEs) over 17% for interlayer thicknesses ranging from 12 to 30 nm with a maximum PCE of 17.82% are realized in D18:Y6-based OSCs. An impressive PCE and fill factor (FF) of 17.56 and 78.03% are also realized in PM6:Y6-based OSCs; both values are among the best ones in PM6:Y6-based binary OSCs. The effectiveness of our strategy in generating efficient CILs is evidenced by two other s-PZs, namely, PDI- N -DAN and NDI- M -DAN. Using PDI- N -DAN and NDI- M -DAN as the CILs, we obtained PCE values of 18.17 and 17.60% in D18:Y6-based OSCs, respectively. The PCE of 18.17% is among the highest for single-junction binary OSCs.

Abstract:An indium‐doped zinc oxide (IZO) electron transport layer (ETL) is developed for high‐efficiency inverted organic solar cells, and indium doping can improve electron extraction and suppress charge recombination. A 1.2‐micrometer‐thick ultrathin flexible OSC achieves an efficiency of 17.0% with a power‐per‐weight ratio of 40.4 W g−1, which is one of the highest values among ultrathin flexible organic solar cells. Sol–gel processed zinc oxide (ZnO) is one of the most widely used electron transport layers (ETLs) in inverted organic solar cells (OSCs). The high annealing temperature (≈200 °C) required for sintering to ensure a high electron mobility however results in severe damage to flexible substrates. Thus, flexible organic solar cells based on sol–gel processed ZnO exhibit significantly lower efficiency than rigid devices. In this paper, an indium‐doping approach is developed to improve the optoelectronic properties of ZnO layers and reduce the required annealing temperature. Inverted OSCs based on In‐doped ZnO (IZO) exhibit a higher efficiency than those based on ZnO for a range of different active layer systems. For the PM6:L8‐BO system, the efficiency increases from 17.0% for the pristine ZnO‐based device to 17.8% for the IZO‐based device. The IZO‐based device with an active layer of PM6:L8‐BO:BTP‐eC9 exhibits an even higher efficiency of up to 18.1%. In addition, a 1.2‐micrometer‐thick inverted ultrathin flexible organic solar cell is fabricated based on the IZO ETL that achieves an efficiency of 17.0% with a power‐per‐weight ratio of 40.4 W g−1, which is one of the highest efficiency for ultrathin (less than 10 micrometers) flexible organic solar cells.

Abstract:A cross‐linked and n‐doped cathode interlayer, namely, c‐NDI:N, is developed for highly efficient and stable organic solar cells (OSCs). By incorporating c‐NDI:N, a high power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 17.5% is achieved in the inverted OSC. Due to the hydrophobicity of c‐NDI:N, the water‐resistance stability of OSCs is significantly improved, and can be used under water for photoelectrochemical water‐splitting. Interlayer materials play a critical role in fabricating high‐performance organic solar cells (OSCs). Herein, a cross‐linked and n‐doped cathode interlayer (CIL), namely, c‐NDI:N, for highly efficient and stable organic solar cells is developed. This study demonstrates that the combination of high‐temperature cross‐linking along with n‐doping endows the c‐NDI:N@200 °C film with excellent robustness, high conductivity, and good film morphology. The inverted OSC using c‐NDI:N@200 °C as CIL exhibits the highest power conversion efficiency of 17.5%, and most notably, appears in a negligible decline in device performance as the film thickness of CIL increases to ≈100 nm. Furthermore, c‐NDI:N can serve as a protecting layer to shield the device against water ingress. Interestingly, c‐NDI:N device can be used under water for photoelectrochemical water‐splitting, highlighting the great application of c‐NDI:N CIL in inverted OSCs.

Abstract:Organic solar cells (OSCs) have experienced rapid progress with the innovation of near‐infrared (NIR)‐absorbing small‐molecular acceptors (SMAs), while the unique electronic properties of the SMAs raise new challenges in relation to cathode engineering for effective electron collection. The two bay‐fluorinated PDI based CILs possess lower the lowest unoccupied molecular orbital energy level of ca. −4.0 eV, which improves the energy level alignment at the NIR‐SMAs (such as BTP‐eC9)/cathode interface for a favorable electron extraction efficiency. The mono‐fluorinated PDINN‐F shows higher electron mobility and better improved interfacial compatibility. The PDINN‐F based OSCs with PM6: BTP‐eC9 as active layer exhibit an enhanced fill factor and larger short‐circuit current density, leading to a high power conversion efficiency (PCE) exceeding 18%. The devices with PDINN‐F CIL retained more than 80% of its initial PCE after operating at the maximum power point under continuous illumination for 750 hours. This work prescribes a facile, cost‐effective and scalable method for the preparation of stable, high‐performance fluorinated CILs, and instilling promise for the NIR‐SMAs‐based OSCs moving forward. An Efficient Interface Modification Material for Improved Efficiency and Stability in Inverted Organic Solar Cells

Abstract:Interface engineering is a reliable strategy to simultaneously enhance efficiency and stability of organic solar cells (OSCs). In this study, a molecule named NMA-C0 has been designed and used as the modified material on ZnO in inverted OSCs. With this modification, the organic-inorganic interface in the ZnO-based inverted OSCs was fine-tuned and the reduced surface roughness, better energy level alignment, improved electron extraction and transport abilities were achieved. As a result, with PM6:L8-BO as the active layer, significantly promoted power conversion efficiencies (PCEs) from 17.51% for bare ZnO to 18.31% for ZnO/NMA-C0 modified condition was realized. Furthermore, compared to the control condition, an obvious boost of both thermal stability and illumination stability was also performed for the NMA-C0 modified devices. These results indicate that NMA-series ETLs could act as excellent molecular platforms of modifying agents of ZnO to improve inverted OSCs' performance and stability simultaneously.

Abstract:Interlayer materials play a critical role in fabricating highly stable organic solar cells (OSCs). Here, we design a cross-linkable naphthalene diimide (NDI) derivative to prepare a robust and hydrophobic electron transporting interlayer for OSCs. A non-polar electron donor PCy2 is elaborately selected to n-dope the crosslinked c-NDI:PCy2 film, by which the doping density of c-NDI:PCy2 is increased by five times to obtain a high conductivity of 6.51 × 10−3 S/m. Meanwhile, the strong hydrophobicity of c-NDI:PCy2 effectively protects the device against water ingress, endowing OSCs with excellent water resistance. A power conversion efficiency of 17.7% is obtained with the c-NDI:PCy2 interlayer, representing the highest value for OSCs with an inverted device architecture. Strikingly, this OSC can be used underwater. By immersing the non-encapsulated cell in water, 70% of its initial efficiency is maintained after 1,000 h in the dark or 4 h under continuous illumination (100 mW/cm2).

Abstract:Cathode interlayers (CILs) play important roles in promoting high-performance organic solar cells (OSCs). Among the commonly used CILs, metal oxides, such as ZnO, TiO2 and SnO2, display suitable work function and high conductivity. However, they are usually processed under high temperature and in most cases, they are adopted in the inverted OSCs. Since high-performing non-fullerene OSCs are usually fabricated with conventional configuration, it is interesting to explore the potential application of these metal oxide materials as CIL in these cells. An efficient strategy is to use metal oxide nanocrystals as CIL to deposit onto photoactive layers. However, the as-synthesized nanocrystals have the difficulty to form smooth and dense films due to the serious aggregation. In this work, we developed a method via the surface modification of TiO2 nanoparticles by using 4-dimethylamino benzoic acid to reduce the aggregation, so that smooth TiO2–N film can be formed on top of the photoactive layer. Besides, TiO2–N displays lower work function, which is helpful for better energy levels alignment. All these factors contribute to the improved charge generation and transport, leading to the power conversion efficiencies enhanced from 13.68% to 15.90% for PM6:BTP-4Cl solar cells.

Abstract:The cathode interlayer is crucial for the development of organic solar cells (OSCs), but the research on simple and efficient interlayer materials is lagging behind. Here, a donor‐acceptor (D‐A) typed selenophene‐fused perylene diimide (PDI) derivative (SePDI3) is developed as cathode interlayer material (CIM) for OSCs, and a non‐fused PDI derivative (PDI3) is used as the control CIM for comparison. Compared to PDI3, SePDI3 shows a stronger self‐doping effect and better crystallinity, resulting in better charge transport ability. Furthermore, the interaction between SePDI3 and L8‐BO can form an efficient extraction channel, leading to superior charge extraction behavior. Finally, benefitting from significantly enhanced charge transport and extraction capacity, the SePDI3‐based device displays a champion PCE of 19.04% with an ultrahigh fill factor of 81.65% for binary OSCs based on PM6:L8‐BO active layer, which is one of the top efficiencies reported to date in binary OSCs based novel CIMs. Our work prescribes a facile and effective fusion strategy to develop high‐efficiency CIMs for OSCs.
