Abstract:Urbanization involving the excavation and reuse of arsenic-bearing geological materials may pose human health risks. We investigated the distribution and sources of soil arsenic at a coastal reclamation site in the Pearl River Delta, China, and proposed risk management strategies. Analysis of 899 soil samples revealed an average of 58.97mg/kg arsenic, with a maximum of 1450mg/kg, mainly in fill material obtained from a local island. Integrative analysis combining reclamation history, regional geology, and bedrock mineralogy conclusively identified hydrothermally altered arsenic-bearing sulfide minerals within extensively fractured bedrock as the primary source of arsenic. Physical weathering and anthropogenic rock blasting produced discrete arsenic-rich particles that were directly transported into soils during land reclamation and accumulated to potential hazardous levels. Oral, dermal, and inhalation pathways were identified as primary exposures for future populations. Integrated engineering and institutional controls, coupled with long-term monitoring, were recommended to mitigate risks. The results highlight the importance of identifying specific geogenic and anthropogenic sources that contribute to heavy metal enrichment of soils in reclaimed areas where native bedrock naturally contains elevated level of metals, supporting evidence-based best practices for risk management and future land use.
Radioactivity of Five Typical General Industrial Solid Wastes and its Influence in Solid Waste Recycling

Abstract:The level of radionuclides is an important index for the preparation of building materials from industrial solid waste. In order to investigate the radiological hazard of five kinds of typical general industrial solid wastes in Guizhou, China, including fly ash (FA), red mud (RM), phosphorus slag (PS), phosphogypsum (PG), and electrolytic manganese residue (EMR), the radiation intensity and associated radiological impact were studied. The results show that concentrations of 238U, 235U, 232Th, 226Ra, 210Pb, and 40K for different samples vary widely. The concentration of 238U was both positively correlated with 235U and 226Ra, and the uranium contents in the measured samples were all of natural origin. The radiation levels of PG, EMR, EMR-Na (EMR activated by NaOH), and EMR-Ca (EMR activated by Ca(OH)2) were all lower than the Chinese and the world’s recommended highest levels for materials allowed to be directly used as building materials. The values of the internal and external illumination index (IRa and Iγ, respectively) for FA and RM were higher (IRa > 1.0 and Iγ > 1.3 for FA, IRa > 2.0 and Iγ > 2.0 for RM). The radium equivalent activity (Raeq), indoor and outdoor absorbed dose (Din and Dout, respectively), and corresponding annual effective dose rate (Ein and Eout) of RM, PS, and FA were higher than the recommended limit values (i.e., 370 Bq/kg, 84 nGy/h, 59 nGy/h, 0.4 mSv/y, and 0.07 mSv/y, respectively), resulting from the higher relative contribution of 226Ra and 232Th. The portion of RM, FA, and PS in building materials should be less than 75.44%, 29.72%, and 66.01%, respectively. This study provides quantitative analysis for the safe utilization of FA, RM, PS, PG, and EMR in Guizhou building materials.

Abstract:Uranium mining activities have contributed to the distribution and uptake of radionuclides, which have increased the active concentrations of natural radionuclides in environmental media, causing elevated human health risks. The present study aims to assess the spatial distribution characteristics of natural radionuclides in the surface soils and river sediments of the typical granite uranium mining area in South China, as well as investigate the geochemical features of natural radionuclides in the soil and sediments to understand their migration processes. The activity concentrations for 238U, 226Ra, 232Th, and 40K ranged from 17–3925 Bq/kg, 50–1180 Bq/kg, 29–459 Bq/kg, and 240–1890 Bq/kg, respectively. The open-pit mining areas and tailings pond locations exhibited the highest concentrations of activity for all these radionuclides. This distribution points to an elevated potential health risk due to radiological exposure in these specific areas. Additionally, the values of radium equivalent activity (Raeq) and annual gonadal dose equivalent (AGDE) in those areas were higher than the limits recommended by ICRP (2021). 238U and 226Ra have a significant correlation (0.724), and the cluster analysis was showing a statistically meaningful cluster below 5 indicated that they have similar behavior during parent rock weathering and watershed erosion, and the distribution of 232Th and 40K were influenced by the addition of rock types. The activity ratios of 226Ra/238U, 226Ra/232Th, 238U/40K, and 226Ra/40K variation indicated that 40K more mobile than 226Ra and 238U, U(VI) was reduced to U(IV) by organic matter in the downstream area and re-entered into the sediment during the sediment surface runoff in the small watershed of the uranium ore open-pit mining area. Therefore, it is necessary to further seal up and repair the tailings landfill area.

Abstract:A total of 214 sampling sites of a hazardous waste disposal center were surveyed in a two-stage pollution investigation, including soil boreholes and groundwater monitoring wells. Results showed that chemical oxygen demand (COD) (4.00–2930.00 mg/L), fluoride (0.07–9.08 mg/L), chromium (0.12–1.20 μg/L), nickel (0.15–459.00 μg/L), lead (0.10–10.20 μg/L), cadmium (Cd) (0.05–16.40 μg/L), and beryllium (0.06–3.48 μg/L) were detected in groundwater samples. For soils, Cd in soil (78.7 mg/kg) exceeded the risk screening value (65 mg/kg) for soil contamination of the second type of development land (GB36600-2018), and there remained the risk of leakage in the landfill detection investigation. Then, a health risk assessment was carried out. Based on the definitions of the groundwater exposure pathway (HJ 25.3-2019) and the pollution investigation of groundwater, the carcinogenic and non-carcinogenic risks of groundwater were generally considered to be negligible. The carcinogenic risk and non-carcinogenic risk of the concerned pollutant in soil for risk assessment (Cd) under the condition of reutilization exceeded the corresponding acceptable levels (1E-06 and 1). The (non-)carcinogenic risk of Cd mainly came from oral intake of soil and inhalation of soil particles under two conditions of reutilization and non-utilization, so on-site workers and surrounding residents should be properly protected from the mouth and nose to minimize the intake of pollutants from the soil and soil particles. The area of soil contaminated by Cd was about 630.58 m 2 , and the amount of pollution was about 1261.16 m 3 . The heavy metal pollution was only distributed in the depth range of 0–2 m, and the suggested risk control value of soil pollutants under the condition of reutilization for Cd was 56 mg/kg. Based on different pollution characteristics of soil, groundwater, and the landfill, targeted control measures were proposed.

Abstract:Due to their extremely toxic properties, 226Ra and it daughters (222Rn, 210Pb, and 210Po) in drinking groundwater require monitoring. Recent studies have reported exceptionally high levels of natural 210Po (up to 10,000 Bq/m3), 226Ra, and 222Rn isotopes in groundwater. This study aims to provide background data on 226Ra and its daughter radionuclides in the typical agricultural-industrial Dongshan Bay (DSB) before the construction of Zhangzhou Nuclear Power Plant (Zhangzhou NPP). The measurement results indicate that no abnormally high activities of 210Po and 210Pb were detected in the investigated wells. Strong positive correlations between 210Pb and 210Po, as well as between 222Rn and 210Pb activities, suggest that the origins of 210Pb and 210Po in groundwater are strongly influenced by the decay of the parent radionuclides 222Rn and 210Pb, respectively. In the DSB coastal zone groundwater, significant deficiencies of 210Po relative to 210Pb and 210Pb relative to 222Rn were observed, providing further evidence that 210Po and 210Pb are also effectively scavenged due to their geochemical properties (specifically particle affinity) within the groundwater-aquifer system. A systematic comparison among all relevant water bodies in the DSB revealed that the activity concentrations of 210Pb and 210Po in groundwater were the highest, except for rainwater. Based on the evaluation of 210Pb sources, the results imply that submarine groundwater discharge (SGD) is an important pathway for transferring radionuclides (such as 210Pb) from land to the nearshore marine environment, even though the study area has a lower 210Pb background groundwater. By considering all the 210Pb’s sources in the DSB, we found low 210Pb background groundwater discharge still needs to be taken into account for small-scale bays. This is because SGD was calculated to be one of the most important 210Pb sources in the bay during observation season. Regardless of whether the system is in a normal state or a nuclear accident emergency state, greater attention should be paid to the groundwater discharge of radionuclides into the ocean.

Improving Estimation of Submarine Groundwater Discharge Using Radium and Radon Tracers: Application in Jiaozhou Bay, China

Abstract:Radium and radon mass balance models have been widely used to quantify submarine groundwater discharge (SGD) in the coastal areas. However, the losses of radium or radon in seawater caused by re-circulated saline groundwater discharge (RSGD) are ignored in most of the previous studies for tracer-based models and this can lead to an underestimation of SGD. Here, we present an improved method which considers the losses of tracers caused by RSGD to enhance accuracy in estimating SGD and SGD-associated material loadings. Theoretical analysis indicates that neglecting the losses of tracers induced by RSGD would underestimate the SGD by a percentage approximately equaling the tracer activity ratio of nearshore seawater to groundwater. The data analysis of previous typical case studies shows that the existing old models underestimated the SGD by 1.9 ∼ 93%, with an average of 32.2%. The method is applied in Jiaozhou Bay (JZB), North China, which is experiencing significant environmental pollution. The SGD flux into JZB estimated by the improved method is ∼1.44 and 1.34 times of that estimated by the old method for 226Ra mass balance model and 228Ra mass balance model, respectively. Both SGD and RSGD fluxes are significantly higher than the discharge rate of Dagu River (the largest one running into JZB). The fluxes of nutrients and metals through SGD are comparable to or even higher than those from local rivers, which indicates that SGD is an important source of chemicals into JZB and has important impact on marine ecological system.

Abstract:Containing only low levels of U-bearing minerals, U ores often have to undergo hydrometallurgical processing for the separation of other minerals. Hydrometallurgical operations, even after being shut down, could pose radiological risk to the ecosystem and human health due to the radionuclide contamination of surrounding environmental media. This study investigated the contamination of radionuclides in the agricultural topsoils downstream of a decommissioned hydrometallurgical U plant in southern China, and assessed the corresponding radiological risk and evaluated its impact on soil microbial communities. The values of geoaccumulation index and potential ecological risk index indicate that all soil samples were significantly contaminated with U and 226Ra, with their concentrations being 4.4-28.7 times and 4.4-114.8 times higher than the corresponding regional background values, respectively. The mean outdoor annual effective dose (OAED) in the sampling plot next to the drainage ditch downstream of the decommissioned plant was up to 3.9 and 8.2 times higher than the Chinese annual effective dose limit and global average, respectively, which is indicative of unacceptable radiological risk for the local farm workers. Soil microbial composition was obviously impacted by the soil physicochemical properties and radionuclides. Specifically, Cladophialophora, which belongs to the fungal genus, exhibited significantly positive correlations with the contents of total Cd, total U, organic U, residual U, and total K, while Methanosarcina, which belongs to the archaeal genus, exhibited significantly positive correlations with the contents of 226Ra and residual U. Soil pH and total N content were significantly correlated with the abundance of several bacterial genera and the dominant archaeal genus (i.e., Candidatus Nitrocosmicus). These findings demonstrate the existence of potentially significant radiological risk associated with the radionuclides released from historical hydrometallurgical processing of U ores to the surrounding environment, and the need for proper site management and remediation.
Multivariate statistical study on naturally occurring radioactive materials and radiation hazards in lakes around a Chinese petroleum industrial area

Abstract:The high-purity germanium gamma-ray spectrometer was used to measure the radioisotope in surface water of lakes in a Chinee petroleum industrial area. 92 samples were collected from surface water of three lakes. Activity concentrations of 232 Th, 226 Ra and 40 K in three lakes were measured, distributed in the range of 101.8–209.4, 192.1–224.9 and 335.0–548.9 mBq/L, respectively. Results were all within the limits of WHO and China. Potential environmental and health risks were assessed by calculating some radiation hazard indicators, radium equivalent index, annual effective dose, excess lifetime cancer risk, absorbed dose rate, external hazard index, internal hazard index, annual gonadal dose equivalent, activity utilization index and representative gamma index, which ranged 0.38–0.54 Bq/L, 0.06–0.08 mSv/y, 0.23 × 10 −3 -0.31 × 10 −3 , 0.17–0.24 nGy/h, 1.01 × 10 −3 -1.46 × 10 −3 , 1.55 × 10 −3 -2.02 × 10 −3 , 1.16–1.66 μSv/y, 3.13 × 10 −3 -4.45 × 10 −3 and 2.60 × 10 −3 -3.77 × 10 −3 . The results were all at acceptable levels, meaning no impact on human health. The relationship between the electrical conductivity of surface water and the activity concentration of 232 Th, 226 Ra and 40 K was evaluated. The electrical conductivity value was 0.241–0.369 mS/cm, showing a significant correlation coefficient between 226 Ra and 40 K and electrical conductivity. Multivariate statistical methods were used to determine the relationship between the activity concentrations of 232 Th, 226 Ra, and 40 K, radiation hazard indicators and electrical conductivity.

Assessment of Radioactivity Level in the Terrestrial and Marine Organisms in Yangjiang and Its Adjacent Areas (China)

Abstract:In order to assess the radioactive level in the terrestrial and marine organisms in Yangjiang and the adjacent areas, 90Sr, gross beta and gamma-emitting radionuclides (238U, 226Ra, 228Th, 226Ra, 40K, 137Cs, 51Cr, 55Fe, 54Mn, 58Co, 60Co and 65Zn) were analyzed from 2011 to 2012. The annual effective doses were estimated in the high natural radioactive background areas in Yangjiang (HBRAYJ). The specific activities of 238U, 228Th, 226Ra, 40K and 137Cs in all organisms were <0.05-5.20, 0.30-14.50, 0.11-3.58, 11.1-148.0 and <0.003-0.088 Bq/kg, whilst 51Cr, 55Fe, 54Mn, 58Co, 60Co, 65Zn and 110mAg were below the minimum detectable activity. 90Sr and gross beta specific activities were 20.0-143.0 and 0.021-0.316 Bq/kg. Results show that 228Th was significantly higher than 238U and 226Ra of natural U series in organisms due to the rich-Th soils in the HBRAYJ; 228Th, 226Ra, 40K, 137Cs and 90Sr were greatly lower than the limited concentrations in Chinese foods. The internal dose mainly contributes to natural 40K, 226Ra and 228Th. It is useful to provide some basic data and assess the radiological risk from the HBRAYJ and Yangjiang nuclear power plants in future.

Abstract:s:The contents of nine selected heavy metals (Cd, Pb, Hg, As, Cr, Cu, Ni, Zn, Co) were determined in the top soils surrounding a large municipal solid waste incinerator (MSWI) in the east of Pearl River Delta. Based on the analyses, the spatial distribution, possible sources and potential ecological risk of the metals were studied. The contents of Cd, Pb, Hg, As, Cr, Cu, Ni, Zn, Co in the top soils were (0.183±0.07) mg·kg-1, (34.8±18.7) mg·kg-1, (0.081±0.028) mg·kg-1, (11.5±9.1) mg·kg-1, (31.5±19.1) mg·kg-1, (17.6±12.3) mg·kg-1, (7.13±4.20) mg·kg-1, (82.4±44.2) mg·kg-1, (3.37±3.08) mg·kg-1, respectively. The mean contents of Hg and Zn were 1 and 2 times higher than their respective background values of Guangdong Province, respectively. Accompanied with Pearson's correlation, hierarchical cluster and principle component analysis, four groups of heavy metals with different spatial distribution were identified: Cr, Ni, Cu, Co originated from lithological sources, Pb, As, Zn were affected by both lithological and human sources (e.g. industrial, agricultural and traffic sources), Cd showed certain spatial correlation with the MSWI, and Hg was strongly related to the MSWI. The range of the potential ecological risk index (RI) of top soil is 51~269.79, of which 52.33% and 18.30% were from Hg and Cd, respectivley. The above results indicated that the unique pollution characteristics of Hg deserve serious attention in pollution monitoring in soils surrounding solid waste incinerator.
Risk Assessment and Source Apportionment of Soil Heavy Metals under Different Land Use in a Typical Estuary Alluvial Island.

Abstract:Understanding the environmental risks of soil heavy metals (HMs) and identifying their main sources are the essential prerequisites for the prevention and management of soil pollution. Based on a detailed survey of soil HMs (Cu, Cr, Ni, Zn, Pb, Cd, As and Hg) from different land use types (including agricultural land, construction land, wetland, and forest land) in an estuary alluvial island, the environmental risk and source apportionment of soil HMs were investigated. Altogether, 117 soil samples were taken in the study area to appraise the soil HMs environmental risk by using the geo-accumulation index (Igeo), potential ecological risk index (RI), and human health risk assessment (HRA) and to identify its main sources by using positive matrix factorization (PMF) model. The average concentrations of soil HMs (except As) surpassed their reference background values in China. There were no significant differenced in the mean concentrations of HMs in different land use types, except that the Hg concentration in the construction land was significantly higher than that in others. The results of Igeo showed that Cd pollution was unpolluted to moderately polluted, and that the others were unpolluted. The potential ecological risk level for Cd and Hg was "moderated potential risk", while for Cu, Cr, Ni, Zn, Pb and As was "low potential risk". Higher contamination was distributed at the west-central area. The results of the HRA indicated that the non-carcinogenic risk and the carcinogenic risk that human beings suffered from HMs in different land uses were insignificant. To more accurately identify the sources of soil HMs, the PMF model coupled with the GIS-spatial analysis was applied. The results showed that agricultural activities, natural source, industrial discharge and river transportation, and atmosphere deposition were the main determining factors for the accumulation of soil HMs in the study area, with the contribution rate of 24.25%, 23.79%, 23.84%, and 28.12%, respectively. The study provides an underlying insight needed to control of the soil HM pollutions for an estuary alluvial island.

Pollution assessment and sources of dissolved heavy metals in coastal water of a highly urbanized coastal area: The role of groundwater discharge

Abstract:Heavy metal concentrations and physicochemical parameters in coastal waters were measured to analyze the spatial distribution characteristics, pollution degrees, and sources of heavy metals in the heavily urbanized Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area (GBA) in China. Heavy metal concentrations in the eastern GBA were higher than those in the west, and the levels of Pb and Zn in seawater were higher than those in groundwater and river water. Both the pollution factors and comprehensive water quality index demonstrated that seawater was not contaminated with As, Cd, Cr, and Ni, whereas low to considerable levels of contamination of Pb and Zn were observed in the central and eastern sections of the GBA. Multiple statistical analyses suggested that the Pb and Zn contaminations in seawater were probably derived from atmospheric deposition and human activities, and the excess amounts of As, Cd, Cu, Ni, and Zn in groundwater were attributed to anthropogenic activities. The heavy metal fluxes from submarine groundwater discharge (SGD) were comparable to, or even greater than, those from local rivers. Therefore, SGD is a significant invisible contributor of heavy metals into the coastal ocean that has often been overlooked in comparison to other visible pollution sources. This study suggests that SGD should be considered in the assessment of heavy metal pollution and future water quality management protocols in marine ecosystems.

Abstract:Tokyo Electric Power Company announced to discharge the contaminated radioactive water resulting from the Fukushima nuclear accident into the ocean after purification from 2023. Concerns remain about safety and removal efficiency of radionuclides. This study calculated the total radioactivity and simulated the marine transport of 137Cs, 90Sr, and tritium. It assessed activity concentration in ocean and marine products, lifetime doses from marine product consumption, and associated cancer risks. We found the radionuclides would be globally distributed and penetrate into deep ocean, with the highest concentrations along Japan's eastern coast. If 137Cs and 90Sr were not removed, related cancer risks would range between 8.64 - 33.35 cases per 100,000 people, depending on age and discharge scenario. Risks would be below one case per 100,000 if only tritium is present. Efficient removal of radionuclides is crucial to mitigating health risks. A Field-Scale Long-Term Study on Radionuclide Transport Through Weathered Granites at a Site in Southern China

Abstract:A regional strategy for safety disposal of low- and intermediate-level radioactive wastes (LILW) has been implemented in China to protect humans and the environment. A joint onsite and laboratory investigation was conducted for a field site in southern China to assess the probability for safe disposal of LILW, which requires the understanding of long-term radionuclide transport behaviors under field conditions. This study presents the field-scale modeling of radionuclide transport through weathered granites for a conservative, a weakly sorbing and a strongly sorbing tracer by incorporating laboratory and field data. The field-scale radionuclide transport model was developed on the basis of a validated long-term groundwater flow model and field-measured dispersion coefficient, as well as laboratory-characterized strontium and cesium distribution coefficients in the weathered granites. The model was then used to perform the long-term transport prediction and risk assessment of radionuclide pollution for both the natural site setting and the graded site setting. Model simulation reveals that the numerical sensitivities of calculated concentrations are tracer dependent and changing with time. The conservative radionuclide is most sensitive to changes in hydraulic conductivity (K) while slightly sensitive to changes in effective porosity (φ), specific yield (μ) and longitudinal dispersion coefficient (D L), indicating advection is the main transport process of conservative radionuclide. The weakly and strongly sorbing tracers, on the other hand, are most sensitive to changes in the distribution coefficient (K d) and less sensitive to changes in the rest of model parameters, revealing that sorption is the main process for controlling the transport of sorbing tracers. A conservative radionuclide plume moves at an average velocity of about 54 m/a, which is too fast to be considered as safe disposal under the natural site setting. However, the plume of the conservative radionuclide could be slowed down to a velocity around 5.3 m/a due to the reduction of the hydraulic gradient under the graded site setting. Therefore, the conservative radioactive wastes could be disposed at the mid-eastern part of the site under the graded site setting because the transport path has been prolonged and thus no conservative radionuclides could migrate out of the site in a reasonable timeframe. For the sorbing tracers, however, results of the computed transport distance are 40 and 2 m at 500 years, respectively. Therefore, they can be disposed safely at the site under both natural and graded site settings. This study provides an insight to the field-scale long-term behaviors of radionuclide transport. The integrated modeling method presented in this study is most useful for the environmental impact assessment of the site conditions relevant to the safe disposal of hazardous wastes.
Radium and nitrogen isotopes tracing fluxes and sources of submarine groundwater discharge driven nitrate in an urbanized coastal area

Abstract:The quantitative evaluations of nutrients delivered by submarine groundwater discharge (SGD) have been widely conducted worldwide, but sources of nutrients in the discharged submarine groundwater remain unclear. Identifying these sources of nutrients is essential to the protection and management of marine ecological environments. This study aims to evaluate the magnitudes of SGD and the associated nitrate in the Guangdong-Hongkong-Macao Greater Bay Area (GHM Greater Bay Area), China, and identify the sources of SGD-driven nitrate in this region using radioactive radium (Ra) isotopes (223Ra, 224Ra, and 228Ra) and stable nitrogen (N) and oxygen (O) isotope composition of nitrate (δ15N-NO3− and δ18O-NO3−). The results of the Ra mixing model show that the estimated SGD and the associated nitrate fluxes into the Greater Bay Area are (9.15 ± 1.26) × 108 m3/d and (3.77 ± 0.52) × 107 mol/d, respectively, both of which are comparable to the contributions from the Pearl River. Combing NO3− dual isotopic signatures of sampled coastal groundwater and five kinds of potential nitrate sources, we found that ammonium (NH4+) fertilizer and natural soil N are the two main sources of nitrate in discharged submarine groundwater and rivers. No anthropogenic inputs from manure or sewage waste were identified. This study provides significant insights into the establishment of effective management strategies for controlling SGD-nutrients into the bay and protecting the marine ecological environment.

Abstract:Abstract Monitoring radioactivity levels in the environment around nuclear power plants is of great significance to assessing environmental safety and impact. Shidaowan nuclear power plant is currently undergoing commissioning; however, the baseline soil radioactivity is unknown. The naturally occurring radionuclides 238U, 232Th, 226Ra and 40K, and artificial radionuclide (AR) 137Cs in soil samples around the Shidaowan nuclear power plant were measured to establish the baseline levels. Human health hazard indices such as external hazard indices (Hex), Radium equivalent (Raeq), outdoor absorbed dose rate (Dout), annual effective dose (AED) and excess lifetime cancer risk (ELCR) were estimated. The average concentration of 232Th, 40K, 137Cs, 238U and 226Ra were 42.6 ± 15, 581 ± 131, 0.68 ± 0.38, 40.13 ± 9.07 and 40.8 ± 12.8 Bq per kg, respectively. The average Hex, Raeq, Dout, AED and ELCR were 0.40, 146 Bq per kg, 68.8 nGy per h, 0.09 mSv per y and 3.29E-04, respectively. These data showed an acceptable level of risk to residents near the nuclear power plant and that the current radioactivity in the soil may not pose immediate harm to residents living close to the nuclear power plant. The observed lower AED and 40 K and 137Cs concentrations were comparable to other studies, whilst ELCR was higher than the world average of 2.9E-04. The commissioning of the Shidaowan nuclear power plant is potentially safe for the surrounding residents; further continuous monitoring is recommended.
