Lett. 131 , 056202 (2023)] at the experimental range of moderate Landau-level-mixing strength has recently been made for the 5/2 state. We here report that the gapped A phase is generic to the sequence of spin-polarized fractional quantum Hall states with filling fractions ν=n/(nm−1) and ν=1−n/(nm−1) , (n≥1,m≥3) , that exhausts almost all the observed states and also predicts some states in the second Landau level for GaAs systems. Our proposed trial wave functions for all these states have remarkably high overlaps with the corresponding exact ground states and can support non-Abelian quasiparticle excitations with charge e/[2(nm−1)] . Striped Quantum Hall State in A Half-filled Landau Level

Abstract:The nature of the fractional quantum Hall state at Landau level filling factor 5/2 remains elusive despite intensive experimental and theoretical work. While the leading theoretical candidates are Moore-Read Pfaffian (Pf) and its particle-hole conjugate anti-Pfaffian (APf), neither received unambiguous experimental support. We show that a state that is intermediate between them, made of alternating stripes of Pf and APf in the bulk, is a viable candidate. Such a state is shown to be incompressible and thus a charge insulator in the bulk, but a heat conductor due to the presence of gapless neutral bulk modes. We argue that the properties of such a state are consistent with existing numerical and experimental work, and discuss possible experimental probes of its presence.

Abstract:Multicomponent quantum Hall systems with internal degrees of freedom provide a fertile ground for the emergence of exotic quantum liquids. Here, we investigate the possibility of non-Abelian topological order in the half-filled fractional quantum Hall (FQH) bilayer system driven by the tunneling effect between two layers. By means of the state-of-the-art density-matrix renormalization group, we unveil ``fingerprint'' evidence of the non-Abelian Moore-Read Pfaffian state emerging in the intermediate-tunneling regime, including the ground-state degeneracy on the torus geometry and the topological entanglement spectroscopy (entanglement spectrum and topological entanglement entropy) on the spherical geometry, respectively. Remarkably, the phase transition from the previously identified Abelian (331) Halperin state to the non-Abelian Moore-Read Pfaffian state is determined to be continuous, which is signaled by the continuous evolution of the universal part of the entanglement spectrum, and discontinuities in the excitation gap and the derivative of the ground-state energy. Our results not only provide a ``proof-of-principle'' demonstration of realizing a non-Abelian state through coupling different degrees of freedom, but also open up a possibility in FQH bilayer systems for detecting different chiral $p\text{\ensuremath{-}}\text{wave}$ pairing states.

Phase Separation in the Putative Fractional Quantum Hall A phases

Abstract:We use several techniques to probe the wave functions proposed to describe the ${\cal A}$ phases by Das, Das, and Mandal [Phys. Rev. Lett. 131, 056202 (2023); Phys. Rev. Lett. 132, 106501 (2024); Phys. Rev. B 110, L121303 (2024).]. As opposed to representing fractional quantum Hall liquids, we find these wave functions to describe states that clearly display strong phase separation. In the process of exploring these wave functions, we have also constructed several new methods for diagnosing phase separation and generating such wave functions numerically. Finally, we uncover a new property of entanglement spectra that can be used as a check for the accuracy of numerics.

Abstract:We study the anisotropic effect of the Coulomb interaction on a 1/3-filling fractional quantum Hall system by using an exact diagonalization method on small systems in torus geometry. For weak anisotropy the system remains to be an incompressible quantum liquid, although anisotropy manifests itself in density correlation functions and excitation spectra. When the strength of anisotropy increases, we find the system develops a Hall-smectic-like phase with a one-dimensional charge density wave order and is unstable towards the one-dimensional crystal in the strong anisotropy limit. In all three phases of the Laughlin liquid, Hall-smectic-like, and crystal phases the ground state of the anisotropic Coulomb system can be well described by a family of model wave functions generated by an anisotropic projection Hamiltonian. We discuss the relevance of the results to the geometrical description of fractional quantum Hall states proposed by Haldane [Phys. Rev. Lett. 107, 116801 (2011)].

Abstract:We generalize the fractional quantum Hall hierarchy picture to apply to arbitrary, possibly non-Abelian, fractional quantum Hall states. Applying this to the nu = 5/2 Moore-Read state, we construct new explicit trial wavefunctions to describe the fractional quantum Hall effect in the second Landau level. The resulting hierarchy of states, which reproduces the filling fractions of all observed Hall conductance plateaus in the second Landau level, is characterized by electron pairing in the ground state and an excitation spectrum that includes non-Abelian anyons of the Ising type. We propose this as a unifying picture in which p-wave pairing characterizes the fractional quantum Hall effect in the second Landau level.

Abstract:We present a comprehensive numerical study of a microscopic model of the fractional quantum Hall system at filling fraction $\ensuremath{\nu}=5∕2$, based on the disk geometry. Our model includes Coulomb interaction and a semirealistic confining potential. We also mix in a three-body interaction in some cases to help elucidate the physics. We obtain a phase diagram, discuss the conditions under which the ground state can be described by the Moore-Read state, and study its competition with neighboring stripe phases. We also study quasihole excitations and edge excitations in the Moore-Read-like state. From the evolution of the edge spectrum, we obtain the velocities of the charge and neutral edge modes, which turn out to be very different. This separation of velocities is a source of decoherence for a non-Abelian quasihole and/or quasiparticle (with charge $\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}e∕4$) when propagating at the edge; using numbers obtained from a specific set of parameters, we estimate the decoherence length to be around $4\phantom{\rule{0.3em}{0ex}}\ensuremath{\mu}\mathrm{m}$. This sets an upper bound for the separation of the two point contacts in a double point-contact interferometer, designed to detect the non-Abelian nature of such quasiparticles. We also find a state that is a potential candidate for the recently proposed anti-Pfaffian state. We find the speculated anti-Pfaffian state is favored in weak confinement (smooth edge), while the Moore-Read Pfaffian state is favored in strong confinement (sharp edge).

Abstract:The possibility of realizing lattice analogs of fractional quantum Hall (FQH) states, so-called fractional Chern insulators (FCIs), in nearly flat topological (Chern) bands has attracted a lot of recent interest. Here, we make the connection between Abelian as well as non-Abelian FQH states and FCIs more precise. Using a gauge-fixed version of Qi's Wannier basis representation of a Chern band, we demonstrate that the interpolation between several FCI states, obtained by short-range lattice interactions in a spin-orbit-coupled kagome lattice model, and the corresponding continuum FQH states is smooth: the gap remains approximately constant and extrapolates to a finite value in the thermodynamic limit, while the low-lying part of the orbital entanglement spectrum remains qualitatively unaltered. The orbital entanglement spectra also provide a first glimpse of the edge physics of FCIs via the bulk-boundary correspondence. Corroborating these results, we find that the squared overlaps between the FCI and FQH ground states are as large as 98.7% for the 8-electron Laughlin state at v = 1/3 (consistent with an earlier study) and 97.8% for the 10-electron Moore-Read state at v = 1/2. For the bosonic analogs of these states, the adiabatic continuity is also shown to hold, albeit with somewhat smaller associated overlaps, etc. Although going between the Chern bands to the Landau-level problem is often smooth, we show that this is not always the case by considering fermions at filling fraction v = 4/5, where the interpolation between Hamiltonians describing the two systems results in a phase transition. Fractional Quantum Hall States with Gapped Boundaries in an Extreme Lattice Limit

Abstract:We present a detailed microscopic investigation of fractional quantum Hall states with gapped boundaries in a coupled bilayer lattice model featuring holes whose counterpropagating chiral edge states are hybridized and gapped out. We focus on an lattice limit for cold-atom experiments, in which each hole just consists of a single removed site. Although the holes distort the original band structure and lead to in-gap remnants of the continuum edge modes, we find that the lowest nearly flat band representing a higher-genus system may naturally form by controlling the local hopping terms that gap out the boundaries. Remarkably, local interactions in this new flat band lead to various Abelian and non-Abelian fractional quantum Hall states with gapped boundaries residing on emergent higher-genus surfaces, which we identify by extracting the nontrivial topological ground-state degeneracies and the fractional statistics of quasiparticles. These results demonstrate the feasibility of realizing novel fractional quantum Hall states with gapped boundaries even in the extreme lattice limit, thus enabling a possible new route towards universal topological quantum computation.
Non-Abelian Phases in Two-Componentν=2/3fractional Quantum Hall States: Emergence of Fibonacci Anyons

Abstract:Recent theoretical insights into the possibility of non-Abelian phases in nu = 2/3 fractional quantum Hall states revived the interest in the numerical phase diagram of the problem. We investigate the effect of various kinds of two-body interlayer couplings on the (330) bilayer state and exactly solve the Hamiltonian for up to 14 electrons on sphere and torus geometries. We consider interlayer tunneling, short-ranged repulsive/attractive pseudopotential interactions, and Coulomb repulsion. We find a 6-fold ground-state degeneracy on the torus when the interlayer hollow-core interaction is dominant. To identify the topological nature of this phase we measure the orbital-cut entanglement spectrum, quasihole counting, topological entanglement entropy, and wave-function overlap. Comparing the numerical results to the theoretical predictions, we interpret this 6-fold ground-state degeneracy phase to be the non-Abelian bilayer Fibonacci state.
Highly-Anisotropic Even-Denominator Fractional Quantum Hall State in an Orbitally-Coupled Half-Filled Landau Level

Abstract:The even-denominator fractional quantum Hall states (FQHSs) in half-filled Landau levels are generally believed to host non-Abelian quasiparticles and be of potential use in topological quantum computing. Of particular interest is the competition and interplay between the even-denominator FQHSs and other ground states, such as anisotropic phases and composite fermion Fermi seas. Here we report the observation of an even-denominator fractional quantum Hall state with highly-anisotropic in-plane transport coefficients at Landau level filling factor $\nu=3/2$. We observe this state in an ultra-high-quality GaAs two-dimensional hole system when a large in-plane magnetic field is applied. By increasing the in-plane field, we observe a sharp transition from an isotropic composite fermion Fermi sea to an anisotropic even-denominator FQHS. Our data and calculations suggest that a unique feature of two-dimensional holes, namely the coupling between heavy-hole and light-hole states, combines different orbital components in the wavefunction of one Landau level, and leads to the emergence of a highly-anisotropic even-denominator fractional quantum Hall state. Our results demonstrate that the GaAs two-dimensional hole system is a unique platform for the exploration of exotic, many-body ground states.

Doping a fractional quantum anomalous Hall insulator

Abstract:We study novel itinerant phases that can be accessed by doping a fractional quantum anomalous Hall (FQAH) insulator, with a focus on the experimentally observed Jain states at lattice filling $\nu = p/(2p+1)$. Unlike in the lowest Landau level, where charge motion is confined into cyclotron orbits, the charged excitations in the FQAH occupy Bloch states with well-defined crystal momenta. At a non-zero doping density, this enables the formation of itinerant states of the doped anyons just beyond the FQAH plateau region. Specializing to the vicinity of $\nu = 2/3$, we describe a few possible such itinerant states. These include a topological superconductor with chiral neutral fermion edge modes as well as a more exotic Pair Density Wave (PDW) superconductor with non-trivial non-Abelian topological order. A Fermi liquid metal with a doping-induced period-3 charge density wave also occurs naturally in our analysis. This Fermi liquid (as well as the PDW) arises from pairing instabilities of a composite Fermi liquid metal that can emerge near filling $2/3$. Though inspired by the theory of anyon superconductivity, we explain how our construction is qualitatively different. At a general Jain filling $\nu = p/(2p+1)$, the same analytical framework leads to a wider variety of phases including higher-charge superconductors and generalized composite Fermi liquids. We predict unusual physical signatures associated with each phase and analyze the crossover between different temperature regimes. These results provide a proof-of-principle that exotic itinerant phases can be stabilized by correlations intrinsic to the FQAH setup.

Abstract:The even-denominator fractional quantum Hall state at a filling factor of ν = 1/2 is an intriguing many-body phase in two-dimensional electron systems, as it appears in the ground state rather than an excited Landau level. It is observed in wide quantum wells where the electrons have a bilayer charge distribution with finite tunnelling between the layers. Whether this state takes an Abelian two-component form or a non-Abelian one-component form has been debated since its experimental discovery. Here we report the observation of the ν = 1/2 state that is flanked by numerous Jain-sequence composite fermion states at ν = p /(2 p ± 1) up to ν = 8/17 and 9/17. As we raise the density, the ν = 1/2 state is strengthened, its energy gap increases up to 4 K and, at the same time, the 8/17 and 7/13 states abruptly become stronger than their neighbouring high-order fractions. The states at ν = 8/17 and 7/13 are the theoretically predicted, simplest daughter states of the one-component Pfaffian ν = 1/2 state. This means that our data suggest a topological phase transition of 8/17 and 7/13 states from the Jain-sequence states to the daughter states of the Pfaffian.

Non-Abelian fractional quantum Hall states at filling factor 3/4

Abstract:Fractional quantum Hall states have been observed at filling factor $\nu=3/4$ in three platforms. General theoretical analysis of topological orders at $\nu=3/4$ revealed that four types of non-Abelian states with Ising anyons have ground state degeneracy $12$ on the torus. The properties of $\nu=3/4$ states can be analyzed using two complementary approaches. In the first one, they are treated as particle-hole conjugate of $\nu=1/4$ Moore-Read types states. In the second one, they are mapped to composite fermions with reverse flux attachment at effective filling factor $3/2$, whose integral part realizes an integer quantum Hall state and the fractional part realizes $\nu=1/2$ Moore-Read type states. For the specific case of bilayer graphene, numerical calculations demonstrate that strong Landau level mixing could generate a gapped state at $\nu=3/4$ with 12 fold ground state degeneracy on the torus. Its chiral graviton spectral functions has one low energy peak with negative chirality and one high energy peak with positive chirality. This points to a specific member of the Moore-Read type states and agrees with the deduction based on daughter states.

Toward a New Theory of the Fractional Quantum Hall Effect

Abstract:The fractional quantum Hall effect was experimentally discovered in 1982. It was observed that the Hall conductivity σyx of a two-dimensional electron system is quantized, σyx=e2/3h, in the vicinity of the Landau level filling factor ν=1/3. In 1983, Laughlin proposed a trial many-body wave function, which he claimed described a “new state of matter”—a homogeneous incompressible liquid with fractionally charged quasiparticles. Here, I develop an exact diagonalization theory that allows one to calculate the energy and other physical properties of the ground and excited states of a system of N two-dimensional Coulomb interacting electrons in a strong magnetic field. I analyze the energies, electron densities, and other physical properties of the systems with N≤7 electrons continuously as a function of magnetic field in the range 1/4≲ν<1. The results show that both the ground and excited states of the system resemble a sliding Wigner crystal whose parameters are influenced by the magnetic field. Energy gaps in the many-particle spectra appear and disappear as the magnetic field changes. I also calculate the physical properties of the ν=1/3 Laughlin state for N≤8 and compare the results with the exact ones. This comparison, as well as an analysis of some other statements published in the literature, show that the Laughlin state and its fractionally charged excitations do not describe the physical reality, neither at small N nor in the thermodynamic limit. The results obtained shed new light on the nature of the ground and excited states in the fractional quantum Hall effect.

Abstract:The Landau level mixing is the key in understanding the mysterious $5/2$ fractional quantum Hall effect in GaAs quantum well. Theoretical calculations with and without Landau level mixing show striking differences. However, the way to deal with the considerable strong Landau level mixing in GaAs is still unsatisfactory. We develop a method combining the screening and the perturbation theories to study the nature of the $5/2$ fractional quantum Hall effect in GaAs efficiently. The screening which has been succeed in explaining ZnO systems integrates out the low-energy Landau levels close to the related Landau level, while the other high-energy Landau levels are integrated out by the perturbation theory. We find that the ground states still hold the quasi-triplet degeneracy which implies the Pfaffian nature of the system. Furthermore, the particle-hole symmetry is only weakly violated since the particle-hole parity is close to unity. We propose that the ground state in the finite-size calculations can be approximated as a variational superposition of the Pfaffian and anit-Pfaffian states. In the experimental environment the symmetrized Pfaffian component is dominant, corresponding a thermal conductance around $2.5$ quanta can be understood consequently.
