Abstract:Spin angular momentum transfer in magnetic bilayers offers the possibility of ultrafast and low-loss operation for next-generation spintronic devices. We report the field- and temperature- dependent measurements on the magnetization precessions in Co2FeAl/(Ga,Mn)As by time-resolved magneto-optical Kerr effect. Analysis of the effective Gilbert damping and phase shift indicates a clear signature of an enhanced dynamic exchange coupling between the two ferromagnetic (FM) layers due to the reinforced spin pumping at resonance. The temperature dependence of the dynamic exchange-coupling reveals a primary contribution from the ferromagnetism in (Ga,Mn)As.

Abstract:Ultrafast optically controlled interfacial exchange interactions in Co2FeAl/(Ga,Mn)As heterostructures are demonstrated. The excitation efficiency of the bilayer is improved by 30–40 times as compared with single Co2FeAl film at 5 K due to the modification of exchange coupling via photoexcited charge transfer between two ferromagnetic layers. Fast spin manipulation in magnetic heterostructures, where magnetic interactions between different materials often define the functionality of devices, is a key issue in the development of ultrafast spintronics. Although recently developed optical approaches such as ultrafast spin‐transfer and spin–orbit torques open new pathways to fast spin manipulation, these processes do not fully utilize the unique possibilities offered by interfacial magnetic coupling effects in ferromagnetic multilayer systems. Here, ultrafast optically controlled interfacial exchange interactions in the ferromagnetic Co2FeAl/(Ga,Mn)As system at low laser fluence levels are experimentally demonstrated. The excitation efficiency of Co2FeAl with the (Ga,Mn)As layer is 30–40 times higher than the case with the GaAs layer at 5 K due to the modification of exchange coupling interaction via photoexcited charge transfer between the two ferromagnetic layers. In addition, the coherent spin precessions persist to room temperature, excluding the drive of pump‐modulated magnetization in the (Ga,Mn)As layer and indicating a proximity‐effect‐related optical excitation mechanism. The results highlight the importance of interfacial exchange interactions in ferromagnetic heterostructures and how these magnetic coupling effects can be utilized for ultrafast, low‐power spin manipulation.

Abstract:Optical control of magnetic anisotropy in ferromagnetic (FM) metals via non-thermal effects offers an intriguing route for the ultrafast magnetization control. Here, we report on strong modification of exchange-coupling induced uniaxial magnetic anisotropy (UMA) in Fe/CoO below the Néel temperature of CoO owing to the charge transfer excited by ultrafast laser pulses. This UMA modification by nonthermal effects is manifested as much smaller frequencies of the Fe spin precession in the initial 100-ps time range under the 400-nm pump with charge transfer excitation, compared to the 800-nm pump with pure thermal effects. From the time-dependent frequency shift under a moderate pump fluence of 0.5 mJ/cm2, we determined the magnitude of the UMA attenuation with a highest value of more than 1000 Oe in a duration of 100 ps. The strong UMA attenuation is attributed to the large suppression of the interface exchange coupling as a result of the diminishment of antiferromagnetic (AFM) spin order in CoO. Our results give insights into the ultrafast spin modulation in AFM CoO dominated by the electronic process, which can be utilized for efficient driving of the coherent spin motion in the proximate FM metal exchange coupled to CoO.

Abstract:Pronounced spin precessions are observed in Fe films grown on n-doped GaAs(001) with a tailored Schottky interface under low-energy ultrafast laser excitation, more than two orders of magnitude smaller than typically required in heat-induced excitation. Pump wavelength dependence of the precession amplitude shows that the fast drift of the optically excited free carriers in the narrow depletion layer of GaAs is the key mechanism to generate the significant transient magnetic field triggering spin precessions. Abstract:Spin-oriented electrons were injected into ferromagnetic Co2MnAl by optical absorption in GaAs. Schottky diode heterostructures were fabricated by molecular beam epitaxy growth of the Heusler ferromagnet Co2MnAl epitaxially on GaAs. The GaAs was illuminated near the bandgap at room temperature by circularly polarized light with 1.45eV. Spin-polarized photocurrent was observed for forward biased conditions. A barrier height of 0.6eV was found from I-V and photoemission experiments.

Abstract:Time-resolved magnetization-induced second-harmonic generation is used to initiate and monitor coherent electronic spin precession in the Fe interface layer of a Fe∕AlGaAs (001) heterostructure. The frequency, phase, and hysteretic behavior of the interface magnetization precession are found to be different from the bulk Fe film. The results indicate that faster magnetization switching can be achieved in nanostructures where interface properties dominate.

Abstract:In spintronics applications, ultrafast spin dynamics have to be controlled at femtosecond (fs) timescales via fs-laser radiation. At such ultrafast timescales, the effect of the Gilbert damping factor {\alpha} on ultrafast demagnetization time should be considered. In previous explorations for the relationship between these two parameters, it was found that the theoretical calculations based on the local spin-flip scattering model do not agree with the experimental results. Here, we find that in Fe81Ga19(FeGa)/Ir20Mn80(IrMn) bilayers, the unconventional IrMn thickness dependence of {\alpha} results from the competition between spin currents pumped from the ferromagnetic (FM) FeGa layer to the antiferromagnetic (AFM) IrMn layer and those pumped from the AFM layer to the FM layer. More importantly, we establish a proportional relationship between the change of the ultrafast demagnetization rate and the enhancement of Gilbert damping induced by the spin currents via interfacial spin chemical potential . Our work builds a bridge to connect the ultrafast demagnetization time and Gilbert damping in ultrafast photo-induced spin currents dominated systems, which not only explains the disagreement between experimental and theoretical results in the relation of {\tau}_M with {\alpha}, but provides further insight into ultrafast spin dynamics as well.

Abstract:The probe of antiferromagnetic (AFM) spin dynamics in thin films has traditionally relied on the short x-ray pulses based on the magnetic dichroism or diffraction effect. Here, we demonstrate the direct optical probe of ultrafast laser-induced AFM spin dynamics of thin AFM CoO films using time-resolved magnetic linear dichroism effect in reflection geometry. The ultrafast laser excitation of the CoO film leads to the quench of AFM order, manifested as large polarization rotations of the reflected probe light. Far below the Neel temperature (T-N), the quench of the AFM order occurs within 300 fs, which is faster than the lattice thermalization (similar to 1 ps) via electron-lattice scattering. This AFM quench process, however, slows down near T-N, where an additional slower quench process with the time constant longer than 20 ps is emergent. Such an AFM spin dynamics is dramatically different than the transient reflectivity dynamics which is nearly invariant in a wide temperature range across T-N. We attribute the quench of AFM order in CoO to the charge-transfer excitation and thermal effect, but the latter mechanism only plays a significant role near T-N.

Abstract:Electric detection of spin currents is critical for integrating spintronic devices into charge-based semiconductor chips and systems. The magnetogyrotropic photogalvanic effect (MPGE) converts spin current into charge current through spin–orbit coupling in the presence of an in-plane magnetic field. A giant MPGE photocurrent implies either a large spin current or high spin-to-charge conversion efficiency, whichever is important for future spintronic devices. In this Letter, we report on the MPGE photocurrents excited by linearly polarized near-infrared radiation in a GaAs/Al0.3Ga0.7As heterostructure, which are increased by up to five times by an additional visible light with adjustable power. We present a theoretical model and suggest that the optical manipulation of the linear MPGE photocurrent is primarily attributed to the spin current tuned by the momentum relaxation time and spin splittings.

Abstract:Laser-induced spin precession and ultrafast demagnetization were investigated in MgO-capped Co2FeAl (MO-CFA) films. Both the Gilbert damping parameter alpha and the demagnetization time tau(m) monotonically increased with the increasing perpendicular magnetic anisotropy as CFA thickness x was reduced to 0.6 nm. The increase in alpha may be explained by a stronger spin-orbit coupling. The tm of an L2(1) Co2FeAl film is larger than that of thick MO-CFA, but smaller than that of MO-CFA with x <= 0.9 nm, indicating that the restored orbital angular momentum may have a stronger and opposite effect on tau(m) compared to the reduced spin polarization in thin MO-CFA.
Controllable Magnetization Precession Dynamics and Damping Anisotropy in Co2FeAl Heusler-alloy Films

Abstract:Magnetization dynamics of the epitaxially-grown Co2FeAl (CFA) thin films have been systematically investigated by the time-resolved magneto-optical Kerr effect (TR-MOKE). The dependences of precession frequency f, relaxation time τ and magnetic damping factor α upon the orientation of applied magnetic field are found to have a strong four-fold symmetry. Two series of samples with various substrate temperatures (Ts) and thickness (tCFA) were prepared and a large Gilbert damping difference between the hard and easy axes is extracted to be 3.3 × 10-3 after subtracting the extrinsic contributions of spin pumping, two-magnon scattering and magnetic inhomogeneities. The four-fold variation of Gilbert damping relates closely to the in-plane magnetocrystalline anisotropy and can be attributed to the anisotropic distribution of spin-orbit coupling. Our findings provide new insights into the anisotropic properties of magnetization and damping, which is very helpful for designing and optimizing advanced spintronic devices on different demands.

Abstract:Antiferromagnet is a promising candidate for the next generation spintronic devices, benefiting from its ultrafast dynamics and spontaneous zero stray field. However, the understanding of their ultrafast spin behaviors is lacking due to the challenges of controlling/detecting the quenched net magnetization. Unconventional compensated semiconducting antiferromagnets present strong time-reversal symmetry breaking, spin splitting in the momentum space, and suitable bandgap for optical control/detection. Thus, it is a powerful platform to uncover the ultrafast dynamics of antiferromagnets. Here, we show an exotic wavelength-dependent spin dynamic in the unconventional compensated semiconducting antiferromagnet {\alpha}-MnTe via time-resolved quadratic magneto-optical Kerr effect measurement, where the probing photon energy of the laser matches its bandgap. This direct excitation and detection of distinct magnon modes reveal varying spin behaviors and time characteristics in a broad temperature range. It originates from the spins triggered at different bands of electronic structures and is depicted in an energy transfer model among electrons, phonons, and magnons. Our study of exotic optical properties in this unconventional semiconducting antiferromagnet fulfills the missing information of spin evolution in the time domain and paves the way for its utilization in ultrafast spintronic devices.

Abstract:Spintronic materials with two-dimensional (2D) transition-metal dichalcogenide (TMD)/ferromagnet (FM) interfaces have received a great deal of interest recently due to strong modulation of the magnetic properties, which provide attractive opportunities for magnetic information storage. Here, we demonstrate the strong spin-orbit coupling (SOC) effect and great interfacial tuning of magnetization dynamics in $M{X}_{2}$/$\mathrm{Co}\text{\ensuremath{-}}\mathrm{Fe}\text{\ensuremath{-}}\mathrm{B}$ thin films by means of a time-resolved magneto-optical Kerr approach, where M is chosen as $\mathrm{Mo}$ or $\mathrm{W}$ and X is $\mathrm{S}$ or $\mathrm{Se}$. The significant drop of demagnetization time, ${\ensuremath{\tau}}_{m}$, and increase of magnetic damping factor, ${\ensuremath{\alpha}}_{s}$, clearly highlight the presence of high interfacial SOC strength in just one monolayer of ${\mathrm{Mo}\mathrm{S}}_{2}$. Compared with the single $\mathrm{Co}\text{\ensuremath{-}}\mathrm{Fe}\text{\ensuremath{-}}\mathrm{B}$ film, the precession frequency, f, is lowered after inserting a $M{X}_{2}$ layer, suggesting a reduction of the effective magnetization, $4\ensuremath{\pi}{M}_{\mathrm{eff}}$, originating from the interfacial d-d hybridization effect. The role of SOC strength on ${\ensuremath{\tau}}_{m}$, ${M}_{\mathrm{eff}}$, and ${\ensuremath{\alpha}}_{s}$ is confirmed by using different TMD materials, and thus, demonstrates that the element M plays a dominant role. The samples with ${\mathrm{WS}}_{2}$ or ${\mathrm{W}\mathrm{Se}}_{2}$ have much shorter ${\ensuremath{\tau}}_{m}$, smaller ${M}_{\mathrm{eff}}$, and larger ${\ensuremath{\alpha}}_{s}$ values due to the strong SOC interaction of heavier atoms. The observed efficient control of dynamic magnetic behavior will further promote the development of TMD/FM materials for practical spintronic applications with ultrafast manipulation speed and low energy consumption.

Abstract:Hybrid structures combining ferromagnetic (FM) and semiconductor constituents have great potential for future applications in the field of spintronics. A systematic approach to study spin-dependent transport in the GaMnAs/GaAs/InGaAs quantum well (QW) hybrid structure with a few nanometer thick GaAs barrier is developed. It is demonstrated that a combination of spin electromotive force measurements and photoluminescence detection provides a powerful tool for studying the properties of such hybrid structures and allows to resolve the dynamic FM proximity effect on a nanometer scale. The method can be generalized on various systems including rapidly developing 2D van der Waals materials.

Abstract:A strong demand currently exists for ferromagnetic (FM) materials with adjustable magnetic properties. In this study, using laser illumination, we demonstrated the direct and efficient modulation of the magnetism of thin FM films covered by all-inorganic cesium lead bromide (CsPbBr3) perovskite quantum dots (QDs). The surface morphology and characteristic sizes of the CsPbBr3 QDs changed considerably and evolved gradually with the increase in the laser illumination time, triggering a series of redox and interfacial diffusion processes, particularly at the interface of the CsPbBr3 QDs/Co heterostructure. The magnetic properties were thus adjustable by varying the magnetic hysteresis loop in accordance with the Co thin film thickness. We believe that this study will pave the way for advanced spintronic applications.

Abstract:Spin angular momentum transfer into an antiferromagnetic (AFM) insulator is observed in a single-crystalline Fe/CoO/MgO(001) heterostructure by time-resolved magneto-optical Kerr effect. The transfer process is mediated by the Heisenberg exchange coupling between Fe and CoO spins. Spin angular momentum transfer to ordered AFM spins is independent of the external magnetic field and enhances the spin precession damping in Fe, which remains nearly invariant with temperature.
Manipulating spin-polarization of Co-doped ZnFe 2 O 4 for photocatalytic TC degradation

Abstract:The rapid recombination of photogenerated electrons and holes was an enormous hindrance constraining the photocatalytic efficiency of photocatalysis, which could be effectively solved by inducing electron spin-polarization. Herein, a series of gradient ZnFe2-xCoxO4 (ZFCO-x) magnetic compounds with spin-polarization properties were synthesized by doping Co cation into ZnFe2O4, as well as the diffraction of X-rays characterization confirmed the successful synthesis of the samples. In photodegradation experiments, ZFCO-0.8 manifested improved photocatalytic degradation efficiency in TC removal experiments with visible-light exposure and external magnetic field. Furthermore, the photodegradation experiments exhibited that the degradation efficiency of ZFCO-x could be raised through Co doping and the photocatalytic degradation efficiency was significantly improved under an external magnetic field. The sample exhibiting the most prominent enhancement was ZFCO-x with doping content of x=0.8, which displayed 48% photocatalytic degradation performance enhancement with a magnetic field. Density functional theory (DFT) was used to calculate the density of states (DOS) of materials. The calculated DOS indicated that ZFCO-0.8 exhibited the most intense spin-polarization consistent with the results of the experiment. This work is anticipated to deliver an operating method for manipulating spin-polarization in photocatalytic semiconductors to improve photocatalytic degradation efficiency.

Enhancement of spin coherence using Q-factor engineering in semiconductor microdisc lasers

Abstract:Semiconductor microcavities offer unique means of controlling light-matter interactions in confined geometries, resulting in a wide range of applications in optical communications and inspiring proposals for quantum information processing and computational schemes. Studies of spin dynamics in microcavities, a new and promising research field, have revealed effects such as polarization beats, stimulated spin scattering and giant Faraday rotation. Here, we study the electron spin dynamics in optically pumped GaAs microdisc lasers with quantum wells and interface-fluctuation quantum dots in the active region. In particular, we examine how the electron spin dynamics are modified by the stimulated emission in the discs, and observe an enhancement of the spin-coherence time when the optical excitation is in resonance with a high-quality (Q approximately 5,000) lasing mode. This resonant enhancement, contrary to expectations from the observed trend in the carrier-recombination time, is then manipulated by altering the cavity design and dimensions. In analogy with devices based on excitonic coherence, this ability to engineer coherent interactions between electron spins and photons may provide new pathways towards spin-dependent quantum optoelectronics.

Unlike the usual electro-Stark effect, the exciton energy dispersion of an exciton is modified by an external in-plane magnetic field, the ground state of the magnetoexciton shifts from a zero in-plane center of mass (CM) momentum to a finite CM momentum, and the Lorentz force induces the spatial separation of electron and hole. Consequently, this effect renders the ground state of magnetoexciton stable against radiative recombination due to momentum conservation. This effect depends sensitively on the thickness and height of GaAs0.7Sb0.3 layer, therefore it could provide us useful infometion about the band alignment of CQW.
Optically controllable magnetism in atomically thin semiconductors

Abstract:We report evidence that ferromagnetic order in electrostatically doped, monolayer transition metal dichalcogenide (TMD) semiconductors can be stabilized and controlled at zero magnetic field by local optical pumping. We use circular dichroism (CD) in reflectivity from excitonic states as a spatially resolved probe of charge-carrier spin polarization. At electron densities n e ~ 10 12 cm −2 , a diffraction-limited, circularly polarized optical pump breaks symmetry between oppositely polarized magnetic states and stabilizes long-range magnetic order, with carrier polarization exceeding 80% over an 8 μm by 5 μm extent. In time-resolved measurements with pulsed optical excitation, we observe that magnetic interactions amplify the initial pump-induced spin polarization by more than an order of magnitude. The optical control of magnetism with local optical pumps will unlock advancements in spin and optical technologies and provides a versatile tool in the study of correlated phases in two-dimensional electron gases.
