Abstract:Food waste fermentation liquid components, mainly lactate and volatile fatty acids (VFAs), can be used as alternative carbon sources to improve the nitrogen removal efficiency. To investigate the effects of carbon sources generated from food waste (FW) fermentation liquid on nitrogen removal for the treatment of high ammonium and high salt wastewater (HAHS), the lactate, acetate, propionate, butyrate, and their mixtures were added in activated sludge systems operating over 130-days. Lactate and butyrate inhibited nitrifiers by enriching polyphosphate accumulating organisms (PAOs), thus deteriorated nitrogen removal after a long-term period. When fed with acetate or propionate, the dominant glycogen accumulating organisms (GAOs) groups simultaneously realized nitrification and denitrification. The mixed carbon source enhanced microbial community robustness and the transformation of Polyhydroxyalkanoate (PHA), advancing nitrogen removal efficiency. Mixed carbon source of acetate-propionate was preferred, in which the coexisting groups of GAOs and PAOs enhanced the denitrification rate of denitrifiers and kept balancing with nitrifiers, where the highest denitrification rate (DNR) was 1.05 mg N/(h·g VSS) and the average TN removal efficiency was above 98% under the maximum nitrogen load of 0.48 kg N/(kg VSS·d). In addition, the primary pathways of nitrogen removal were heterotrophic nitrification and denitrification, since the autotrophic nitrifiers were inhibited by the free ammonium and salinity. This study illustrated the differences of nitrogen removal performance and mechanisms with fermentation liquid components as carbon sources processing of HAHS wastewater.

Abstract:The problem of poor carbon source is a common technical bottleneck inhibiting the nutrients removal in biological wastewater treatment. This study aimed to investigate the feasibility of using food waste (FW) fermentation liquid (FL) as the external carbon source to enhance biological nitrogen and phosphorus removal (BNPR) in sequencing batch reactors. It was found that the ammonium nitrogen (NH4-N) and phosphate (PO4-P) in FL was not need to be removed before it was added into wastewater treatment system, and the added FL did not cause the external deterioration of NH4-N and PO4-P removal. The effect of volume ratio of FL to wastewater (FL/W) on BNPR process was investigated, and the results suggested the optimum ration of FL/W was 1/90. Compared to the control system with no acetic acid and FWFL as external carbon source, the experimental system with 1/90 of FL/W exhibited higher PO4-P and NH4-N removal efficiencies, which were 92.70 % and 92.38 %. Moreover, the analysis of this study suggested that the high removal rates of PO4-P and NH4-N were mainly attributed to the extra volatile fatty acid in added FWFL and the accumulated intracellular polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHAs) in anaerobic stage, which could be the main energy sources for the denitrification and PO4-P removal.

Abstract:Biological nitrogen removal of wastewater with low COD/N ratio could be enhanced by the addition of wasted sludge fermentation liquid (SFL), but the performance is usually limited by the introducing ammonium. In this study, the process of using SFL was successfully improved by involving anammox process. Real municipal wastewater with a low C/N ratio of 2.8–3.4 was treated in a sequencing batch reactor (SBR). The SBR was operated under anaerobic-aerobic-anoxic (AOA) mode and excess SFL was added into the anoxic phase. Stable short-cut nitrification was achieved after 46d and then anammox sludge was inoculated. In the stable period, effluent total inorganic nitrogen (TIN) was less than 4.3 mg/L with removal efficiency of 92.3%. Further analysis suggests that anammox bacteria, mainly affiliated with Candidatus_Kuenenia, successfully reduced the external ammonia from the SFL and contributed approximately 28%–43% to TIN removal. Overall, this study suggests anammox could be combined with SFL addition, resulting in a stable enhanced nitrogen biological removal.

Abstract:In order to enhance nitrogen removal from domestic wastewater with a carbon/nitrogen (C/N) ratio as low as 2.2:1, external carbon source was prepared by short-term fermentation of food wastes and its effect was evaluated by experiments using sequencing batch reactors (SBRs). The addition of fermented food wastes, with carbohydrate (42.8 %) and organic acids (24.6 %) as the main organic carbon components, could enhance the total nitrogen (TN) removal by about 25 % in contrast to the 20 % brought about by the addition of sodium acetate when the C/N ratio was equally adjusted to 6.6:1. The fermented food waste addition resulted in more efficient denitrification in the first anoxic stage of the SBR operation cycle than sodium acetate. In order to characterize the metabolic potential of microorganisms by utilizing different carbon sources, Biolog-ECO tests were conducted with activated sludge samples from the SBRs. As a result, in comparison with sodium acetate, the sludge sample by fermented food waste addition showed a greater average well color development (AWCD590), better utilization level of common carbon sources, and higher microbial diversity indexes. As a multi-organic mixture, fermented food wastes seem to be superior over mono-organic chemicals as an external carbon source.

Mixotrophic denitrification of waste activated sludge fermentation liquid as an alternative carbon source for nitrogen removal: Reducing N2O emissions and costs

Abstract:Heterotrophic-sulfur autotrophic denitrification (HAD) has been proposed to be a prospective nitrogen removal process. In this work, the potential of fermentation liquid (FL) from waste-activated sludge (WAS) as the electron donor for denitrification in the HAD system was explored and compared with other conventional carbon sources. Results showed that when FL was used as a carbon source, over 99% of NO3--N was removed and its removal rate exceeded 14.00 mg N/g MLSS/h, which was significantly higher than that of methanol and propionic acid. The produced sulfate was below the limit value and the emission of N2O was low (1.38% of the NO3--N). Microbial community analysis showed that autotrophic denitrifiers were predominated in the HAD system, in which Thiobacillus (16.4%) was the dominant genus. The economic analysis showed the cost of the FL was 0.062 €/m3, which was 30% lower than that in the group dosed with methanol. Our results demonstrated the FL was a promising carbon source for the HAD system, which could reduce carbon emission and cost, and offer a creative approach for waste-activated sludge resource reuse.
Study on Refuse Stabilization in Bioreactor Landfills for Nitrogen Removal

Abstract:Nitrogen removal and refuse stabilization were investigated in the bioreactor landfills with intermittent aeration at the top of landfilled refuse or an aerobic nitrifying reactor using treated leachate recirculation.The results showed that the decrease in leachate NH_4~+-N concentration in the bioreactor landfill system with intermittent aeration at the top of landfilled refuse was slower than that with an aerobic nitrifying reactor using treated leachate recirculation,but the theoretical energy consumption of the former was about 98% lower than the latter.The infrastructure investment of aerobic nitrifying reactor and disposal of sludge were no longer indispensable.The way of intermittent aeration at the top of landfilled refuse accelerated the degsadation of waste and organic matter in leachate,increased the degree of waste stabilization and enhanced the subsidence by 10%-12%.However,an aerobic reactor using treated leachate recirculation would bring about a shortage of carbon source at later stage of refuse decomposition,which resulted in slower waste stabilization.Because of the organic matter consumption of denitrifiaction process and the metabolic activity of aerobes,leachate maximal COD_(Cr) and VFA concentrations in the bioreactor landfill system with intermittent aeration at the top of landfilled refuse ammounted to only 50% of the control,and the gas production from the methanogenic reactor reduced by 42%-44%.

Abstract:A new method for increasing municipal wastewater biological nutrient removal (BNR) by using kitchen wastewater-derived carbon source to simultaneously enhance phosphorus uptake and short-cut nitrification–denitrification was reported. Firstly, laboratory tests were conducted to maximize the volatile fatty acids (VFA) production with the greatest propionic/acetic acid ratio (i.e., the preferred carbon source) from kitchen wastewater. Compared with the un-controlled pH fermentation, alkaline fermentation increased the yield of VFA and the ratio of propionic/acetic acid by 63.6% and 140.5%, respectively. Then, the alkaline fermentation liquid was used as the additional carbon source of municipal wastewater BNR in lab-scale reactors, and the results showed that it achieved much greater nitrogen and phosphorus removal than the un-fermented kitchen wastewater. Finally, the full-scale works with alkaline fermentation of kitchen wastewater and the application of the fermentation liquid to improve municipal wastewater BNR were operated. The long-term experiments indicated that the alkaline fermentation liquid had a VFA content of 66.3% (COD based), VFA yield of 0.63, and ratio of propionic/acetic acid of 0.86/1, and the supplement of alkaline fermentation liquid to municipal wastewater caused higher total nitrogen and total phosphorus removal than acetic acid (78.2% versus 69.6%, and 95.2% against 88.4%). Further mechanism investigation indicated that the presence of propionic and humic acids significantly increased phosphorus uptake, denitrifying phosphorus removal, and short-cut nitrification and denitrification in the BNR experiments, which was the main reason for alkaline fermentation liquid showing greater total nitrogen and phosphorus removal abilities than traditional carbon source.

Abstract:This work investigated the effectiveness of free nitrous acid (FNA) in enhancing organic waste solubilization to improve biogas production in anaerobic digestion (AD). The results indicated that FNA pretreatment can enhance soluble organic content and control H 2 S odor in tested organic wastes, including food waste, sewage sludge, and their combination. However, a significant decrease (>50 %) in FNA concentration was found in the reactors, possibly due to denitrifier-driven NO 2 – consumption. Biochemical methane potential (BMP) tests showed a 25 ± 8 % enhancement in CH 4 production in the reactors fed with mixed substrate pretreated with 2.9 mg FNA-N/L. However, the presence of NO 2 – (325.6–2368.0 mg N/L) in some BMP reactors, due to carryover from FNA pretreatment, adversely affected CH 4 production (>55 %) and prolonged lag time (>4.2 times). These findings are valuable for researchers and practitioners in waste management, offering insights for implementing FNA pretreatment to enhance the biodegradability of organic wastes in AD.

Abstract:The production of volatile fatty acids (VFAs) from food waste to improve biological nutrient removal has drawn much attention. In this study, acidogenic liquid from food waste was used as an alternative carbon source for synthetic wastewater treatment. C/N ratios of 5 and 6 were suitable for denitrification, and the change in acidogenic liquid composition had no negative effect on denitrification. The denitrification rates using optimal carbon-to-nitrate ratios of acidogenic liquid were more than 25 mg NO3-N/(gVSS·h). At the same time, acidogenic liquid was used to improve nutrient removal from summer and winter sewage. C/N ratios of 5 and 6 were acceptable for summer sewage treatment. Total nitrogen in the final effluent was less than 7 mg/L. Two additional hours were required for winter sewage treatment, and the C/N ratio had to be >6.
Exploring recycled agricultural wastes for high-rate removal of nitrogen in wastewater: Emphasizing on the investigation of the inner driving force and comparison with conventional liquid carbon sources

Abstract:In this study, four typical recycled agricultural wastes (AWs), corn cob, wheat straw, sawdust and walnut shells (named AW1, AW2, AW3 and AW4, respectively), were selected as external solid carbon sources to enhance the removal of nitrogen in wastewater, and specifically, the driving mechanism was thoroughly investigated. The leaching experiments showed that the dissolved organic carbon (DOC) release capacity followed the order of AW1>AW2>AW3>AW4, ranging from 6.21 to 31.92 mg/g. DOC released from AWs mainly consisted of protein-like substances, fulvic acid-like substances and humic-like substances. AW1 and AW2 achieved comparable NO x − -N removal performance with a liquid carbon source of sodium acetate (SA) during the long-term denitrification experiments (>94.2%) but not for the other two AWs (only 16.8%-38.1%). Denitrification performance relied on DOC released from AWs at the beginning, while the enrichment of the functional CAZymes (including glycoside hydrolase and carbohydrate esterase) involved in cellulose and hemicellulose decomposition of AWs and functional genes ( GAPDH, gap 2, PK , etc.) related to glycolysis were the inner driving force, which guaranteed the continuous supply of electron donors for denitrification. The relatively high abundances of napAB, narGHI, nirKS, norBC and nosZ , which encode nitrate reductase, nitrite reductase, NO reductase and N 2 O reductase, assured the better denitrification performance in the SA, AW1 and AW2 groups. In addition to denitrification-related functional genes, the relative abundances of nirBD and nrfAH associated with dissimilatory nitrate reduction were much higher in AW1 and AW2 groups than in SA group, implying that the nitrogen removal mechanism should be different in liquid carbon source and AW-based solid carbon source systems. In addition, GLU, gltBD and glnA , which participate in ammonia assimilation were the highest in the AW2 group, resulting in a large amount of organic nitrogen accumulation (peak concentration of approximately 24.5 mg/L), and this finally ruled it out as an alternative external carbon source. The abovementioned microbial mechanism was verified based on the correlation analysis of nutrient removal and functional genes combined with host bacterial analysis. Our study can provide valuable information for understanding the mechanism of using AWs as alternative external carbon sources to promote the removal of nitrogen in wastewater.

Abstract:Acetic acid and sodium acetate are generally supplied to wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) in China to improve total nitrogen (TN) and total phosphorus (TP) removal, and the addition of carbon source also facilitates to increase sludge growth rate and further provides material basis for the extraction of proteins and amino acids from activated sludge. To recycle ammonia nitrogen resources, a system that combined adsorption and anaerobic-anoxic-oxic (A/AAO) process for treating low strength wastewater was established. Experimental results showed that by the addition of carbon substrate from a mixture of anaerobically fermented adsorption sludge, the average removal efficiency of chemical oxygen demand (COD), ammonia nitrogen, TN, and TP were 88%, 96.9%, 93.9%, and 92.1%, respectively, and the ratio of nitrogen assimilation to nitrogen dissimilation significantly increased by a factor of 2.5. Through energy analysis (based on adenosine triphosphate, ATP), sludge flocculation capacity and settling property, it was found that the AAO process sludge presented the logarithmic growth characteristics. The respective sludge protein and amino acids contents increased by over 11.4% and 40.3%, and the synthetic products of glutamic acid, alanine and aspartate increased through the assimilation of ammonia nitrogen, thereby indicating that replenishing the carbon substrate could markedly enhance protein and amino acids contents in AAO process sludge. Moreover, the diversity of the microbial community in adsorption process was relatively rich, the diversity in the adsorption process sludge was the highest, while the diversity of the AAO process sludge evidently decreased. The microbial community in each process was similarly based on 16S rDNA gene sequence analysis, microflora was prominent in the AAO process, with Dechloromonas, Flavobacterium, Zoogloea, Unclassified_Rhodocyclaceae and Thauera as the dominant species. Promising carbon utilization facilitates contaminants removal in low strength wastewater treatment and is conducive to protein production through ammonia nitrogen assimilation.
Biological Denitrification from Mature Landfill Leachate Using a Food-Waste-derived Carbon Source.

Abstract:The mature landfill leachate containing high ammonia concentration (> 1000 mg/L) is a serious threat to environment; however, the low COD to TN ratio (C/N, <3) strongly inhibits the denitrification process and poses a severe obstacle for efficient treatment. Herein, two kinds of acidogenic liquids, fermented from oil-removed food waste and oil-added food waste, were first applied as external carbon sources for the biological nitrogen removal from mature landfill leachate in an aerobic/anoxic membrane bioreactor. "Acidogenic liquid b" served quite better than commercial sodium acetate, considering the higher denitrification efficiency and the slightly rapider denitrification rate. The effect of C/N and temperature were investigated under hydraulic retention time (HRT) of 7 d, which showed that C/N >= 7 (25 degrees C) was enough to meet the general discharge standards of NH4+-N, TN and COD in China. Even for some special areas of China, the more stringent discharge standards (NH4+-N <= 8 mg/L, TN <= 20 mg/L) could also be achieved under longer HRT of 14 d and C/N >= 6. Notably, the COD concentration in effluent could also be well reduced to 50-55 mg/L, without further physical-chemical treatment. This proposed strategy, involving the high-value utilization of food waste, is thus promising for efficient nitrogen removal from mature landfill leachate. (C) 2018 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.
Short-cut Waste Activated Sludge Fermentation and Application of Fermentation Liquid to Improve Heterotrophic Aerobic Nitrogen Removal by Agrobacterium Sp. LAD9

Abstract:Conventional anaerobic waste activated sludge (WAS) fermentation has been proved efficient in WAS reduction and internal carbon sources (e.g. volatile fatty acids) production for heterotrophic aerobic nitrogen removal, but to be time-consuming (within weeks). This study revealed similar efficiency for nitrogen removal enhanced by Agrobacterium sp. LAD9 capable of heterotrophic aerobic nitrogen removal using products from short-cut WAS fermentation process improved by thermal-alkaline pretreatment within only 14 h. Bench-scale experiments demonstrated that about 30% organics could be extracted for carbon sources recovering and sludge reduction during short-cut WAS fermentation, and addition of CaO, MgCl2 center dot 6H(2)O and polyacrylamide sequentially into fermented WAS exhibited better sludge dewaterability and higher carbon recovery efficiency. With the similar initial biomass concentration, the activated-sludge system with addition of LAD9 and short-cut fermentation products (chemical oxygen demand to nitrogen (COD/N) = 9) excellently performed with nitrogen removal efficiency of 86.4% within 6 h, much higher than those of 74.2% with addition of LAD9 only (COD/N = 6) and 52.5% with neither LAD9 nor short-cut fermentation products (COD/N = 6). The proposed system modified with LAD9 is of great potential for on-site reduction, reuse and recycling of WAS, and more efficient than conventional nitrogen removal systems by using short-cut WAS fermentation liquid. Lactic Acid Production from Food Waste Hydrolysate by Lactobacillus Pentosus: Focus on Nitrogen Supplementation, Initial Sugar Concentration, Ph, and Fed-Batch Fermentation.

Abstract:Lactic acid production from food waste via fermentation is environmentally sustainable. However, the characteristics of food waste fermentation to produce lactic acid are not well understood due to the complexity of food waste. This study aims to understand the effects of key variables on the characteristics of food waste fermentation to maximize lactic acid production. Food waste was enzymatically hydrolyzed and fermented by Lactobacillus pentosus. Key fermentation variables, including nitrogenous nutrient supplementation, initial sugar concentration, and pH, were investigated in batch fermentation to unveil their effects on fermentation titer, yield, and productivity. The results showed that supplementation of 0.25% (w/v%) yeast extract and peptone to the food waste fermentation media significantly improved fermentation titer and productivity, but further increase in the supplementation level did not improve fermentation. Increasing the initial sugar concentration from 40 g/L to 100 g/L increased the fermentation titer from 41.0 g/L to 93.0 g/L and productivity from 0.34 g/L/h to 0.76 g/L/h. pH 6.0 was the optimal pH for the fermentation. At the optimal conditions, food waste fermentation resulted in the highest fermentation titer, yield, and productivity of 106.7 g/L, 1.12 g/g, and 3.09 g/L/h, respectively. The high fermentation yield of 1.12 g/g might be explained by the extra lactic acid production from unidentified compounds in food waste hydrolysates. By applying fed-batch fermentation, the lactic acid concentration reached 157.0 g/L with a yield and overall productivity of 0.92 g/g and 2.0 g/L/h, respectively. Based on the mass balance, a total of 251 kg lactic acid was produced from 1000 kg food waste. Practical Application Food waste is one of the largest municipal solid wastes in the US, and most food waste ends up in landfills, causing significant economic losses and environmental concerns. In this study, we developed a fermentation process to convert food waste into biorenewable lactic acid and demonstrated that food waste is a superior feedstock for fermentation due to its embedded nutrients. Moreover, due to the embedded nutrients in food waste, the supplementation of yeast extract and peptone to fermentation can be reduced by over 50%, which can reduce the operating cost of lactic acid fermentation on an industrial scale.
Insights into the effect of nitrate photolysis on short-chain fatty acids production from waste activated sludge in anaerobic fermentation system: Performance and mechanisms

Abstract:Nitrate photolysis has become an efficient, low-cost and promising technology for emerging contaminants removal, while its performance and mechanism for waste activated sludge (WAS) treatment is still unknown. This study innovatively introduced nitrate photolysis for WAS disintegration, and investigated the effect of nitrate addition (150-375 mg N/L) for short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs) production during anaerobic fermentation (AF). The results showed that nitrate photolysis significantly promoted the SCFAs production from WAS, and peaked at 280.7 mg/g VSS with 7-d fermentation with 150 mg N/L addition (150N-UV), which increased by 8.8-35.0% and 10.7-23.3% compared with other photolysis groups and sole nitrate groups. Effective release of the soluble organics was observed in the nitrate photolysis groups during AF, especially soluble proteins, reaching 1505.4 mg COD/L at 9 d in 150N-UV group, promoted by 7.0∼15.7% than nitrate/nitrate photolysis groups. The model compounds simulation experiment further demonstrated the positive effect of nitrate photolysis on organics hydrolysis and SCFAs accumulation. The result of the radical capture and quenching verified the reactive oxygen species contributed more compared with reactive nitrogen species. Functional group analysis confirmed the effective bioconversion of the macromolecular organics during the fermentation. Moreover, the nitrate photolysis enhanced the enrichment of the functional consortia, including anaerobic fermentation bacteria (AFB), e.g., Fnoticella, Romboutsia, Gracilibacter and Sedimentibacter , and nitrate reducing bacteria (NRB), e.g., Acinerobacter and Ahniella . The macrogenetic analysis further revealed that glycolysis, amino acid metabolism, acetate metabolism and nitrogen metabolism were the dominating metabolic pathways during fermentation, and the abundance of the relevant genes were enhanced in 150N-UV group.

Abstract:The effect of different carbon sources was studied relative to the treatment effect of aerobic denitrifying bacteria during the treatment of nitrate-containing wastewater as well as the influence of co-metabolism flora. Three carbon sources, i.e., glucose, citric acid, and sodium acetate, were selected to study the changes in the pH, nitrate nitrogen, chemical oxygen demand removal, nitrite nitrogen concentration, physical and chemical properties of sludge and volatile fatty acids, and high-throughput sequencing to study any changes in flora. The results showed that the denitrification ability of the system using citric acid as the carbon source was stronger than the denitrification ability of the system using glucose or sodium acetate as the carbon source. The removal of nitrate nitrogen in the system was the result of the co-metabolism of acid producing bacteria and aerobic denitrifying bacteria. Due to the greater number of types and greater amount of dominant bacteria in the sludge domesticated and cultured with citric acid as a carbon source, the co-metabolism flora formed was more stable, so it could better remove nitrate nitrogen.

Abstract:China generates over 100 million tons of food waste annually, leading to significant environmental pollution and health risks if not managed properly. Converting FW into a high-value-added platform molecule, lactic acid (LA), through fermentation offers a promising approach for both waste treatment and resource recovery. This paper presents a comprehensive review of recent advancements in LA production from FW, focusing on pure strains fermentation and open fermentation technologies, metabolic mechanisms, and problems in fermentation. It also assesses purification methods, including molecular distillation, adsorption, membrane separation, precipitation, esterification and hydrolysis, solvent extraction, and in-situ separation, analyzing their efficiency, advantages, and disadvantages. However, current research encounters several challenges, including low LA yield, low optical purity of L-(+)-LA, and difficulties in the separation and purification of LA. The integration of in-situ separation technology coupled with multiple separation methods is highlighted as a promising direction for future advancements.
Enhancing nitrogen removal from wastewater in sequencing batch reactors (SBRs) using additional carbon source produced from food waste acidogenic fermentation at different temperatures

Abstract:Fermentation slurry from food waste (FSFW) produced at different temperatures (20, 37, and 55 °C) was utilized as external carbon source for promoting nitrogen removal in this study. It was found that high temperatures improved the hydrolysis rate by promoting the hydrolytic enzyme activity. Mesophilic temperature (37 °C) was favorable for organic acid (especially lactic acid) production by selectively enriching the Lactobacillus (with a relative abundance of 90.6%), while thermophilic temperature (55 °C) would restrict the acidogenesis rate (18.9%) and result in the accumulation of carbohydrate in the fermented slurry. Organic acids in the FSFW act as easily biodegradable carbon sources, but the macromolecular and particulate organic components can be utilized as slowly biodegradable carbon sources in the denitrification processes. Using the FSFW as carbon sources to enhance nitrogen removal from wastewater in sequencing batch reactors (SBRs) for more than 150 days, the FSFW produced at thermophilic temperature could significantly promote the microbial metabolic capacity of the activated sludge and improve the nitrogen and phosphate removal efficiencies.

Abstract:The effect of addition of organic carbon sources (acetic acid and waste activated sludge alkaline fermentation liquid) on anaerobic–aerobic (low dissolved oxygen, 0.15–0.45mg/L) biological municipal wastewater treatment was investigated. The results showed that carbon source addition affected not only the transformations of polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHA), glycogen, nitrogen and phosphorus, but the net removal of nitrogen and phosphorus. The removal efficiencies of TN and TP were, respectively, 61% and 61% without organic carbon source addition, 81% and 95% with acetic acid addition, and 83% and 97% with waste activated sludge alkaline fermentation liquid addition. It seems that the alkaline fermentation liquid of waste biosolids generated in biological wastewater treatment plant can be used to replace acetic acid as an additional carbon source to improve the anaerobic–aerobic (low dissolved oxygen) municipal wastewater nutrients removal although its use was observed to cause a slight increase of effluent BOD and COD concentrations.
