Abstract:Simultaneously improving device efficiency and stability is the most important issue in perovskite solar cell (PSC) research. Here, we strategically introduce a multi-functional interface layer (MFIL) with integrated roles of: (1) electron transport, (2) moisture barrier, (3) near-infrared photocurrent enhancement, (4) trap passivation, and (5) ion migration suppression to enhance the device performance. The narrow-band-gap non-fullerene acceptor, Y6, was screened out to replace the most commonly used PCBM in the inverted PSCs. A significantly improved power conversion efficiency of 21.0% was achieved, along with a remarkable stability (up to 1,700 h) without encapsulation under various external stimuli (light, heat, and moisture). Furthermore, systematic studies of the molecular orientation or passivation and the charge carrier dynamics at the interface between perovskite and MFIL were presented. These results offer deep insights for designing advanced interlayers and establish the correlations between molecular orientation, interface molecular bonding, trap state density, non-radiation recombination, and the device performance.

Abstract:The pseudo‐planar heterojunction (PPHJ) structure fabricated by sequential deposition process can successfully improve vertical phase separation. The devices based on PPHJ can suppress charge recombination and increase carrier transportation compared with integrated perovskite/bulk heterojunction solar cells, which also extend the near‐infrared spectral absorption of devices up to 920 nm and obtain a champion efficiency of 23.25%. Broadening near‐infrared (NIR) spectral response by virtue of organic bulk heterojunction (BHJ) is intensively explored to enhance power conversion efficiency (PCE) of perovskite solar cells (PSCs). However, the complex photovoltaic morphology and undesirable conductivity in BHJ structure can lead to the severe loss of photovoltaic performance, which are still urgent challenges for the commercialization of integrated PSCs (IPSCs). Recently, the gradual development of pseudo‐planar heterojunction (PPHJ) structure with excellent vertical phase separation and improved charge transfer can hopefully provide more opportunities for IPSCs. Herein, an optimization strategy is reported employing PPHJ structure with hydrophobic long alkyl chains as the NIR light‐absorbing layer in the devices, with which the light response of the IPSCs is extended to 920 nm. Owing to the lone electron pairs in the sulfur atoms, D18‐Cl has functioned as an effective additive that can effectively modulate the growth of the perovskite and passivate the defects. As a result, the optimized device has achieved an impressive PCE of 23.25%, while the short‐circuit current is enhanced from 22.93 to 25.14 mA cm−2. The long‐term and humidity stability of integrated perovskite/PPHJ solar cells are significantly elevated compared with IPSCs based on BHJ.

Abstract:Progress toward perovskite solar cells (PSCs) with higher efficiency and stability requires further enhancing the light absorption, reducing the carrier recombination at defects and interfaces, improving the charge carrier separation, and minimizing the energy loss crossing the interfaces. Interface passivation and device structure optimization are the main strategies to improve efficiency and device stability. In this work, we report a simple method to combine the two strategies, i.e., realize the pervoskite heterostructure and the passivation layer simultaneously in a single two-dimensional (2D) PEA2PbI4–three-dimensional (3D) MAPbI3 composite perovskite interfacial layer. We use a mixed solution of methylammonium iodide (MAI) and phenethylammonium iodide (PEAI) to react with the intentionally introduced excess PbI2 in the Cs0.05(MA0.15FA0.85)0.95Pb(I0.85Br0.15)3 (CsMAFA) perovskite layer and form the MAPbI3/CsMAFA heterostructure and the 2D PEA2PbI4 perovskite passivation layer. Systematic investigations show that the MAPbI3/CsMAFA heterostructure can enhance the light absorption and the charge carrier separation at the interfaces, and thus improve the short-circuit current (J sc) of solar cells. The 2D PEA2PbI4 perovskite layer can effectively passivate the interfacial defects and improve the fill factor (FF) and open-circuit voltage (V oc). The working mechanisms of MAI and PEAI treatment are also discussed. This work offers a promising path for the fabrication of highly efficient and stable PSCs.

Abstract:Poly (3-hexylthiophene) (P3HT) has been recognized to be a potential hole-transport material (HTM) for stable and efficient perovskite solar cells (PSCs) due to its low cost, high hole mobility, and solution processability. However, the uncontrolled configuration of the polymer chains and the poor contact on the perovskite film restrain the charge extraction and transport in the devices. Here, we demonstrate a simple and versatile strategy for the fabrication of stable and efficient P3HT-based PSCs, using 1-hexyl-2,5-dimethyl-1H-pyrrole-3-carboxylic acid (HPCA) as interlayer between perovskite and P3HT layers. The carboxyl group in HPCA can effectively suppress anion-vacancy defects at the grain boundaries and surface of the perovskite film, reducing the trap state density and improving the carrier lifetimes. Moreover, the peripheral hexyl-pyrrole in HPCA can improve the interface contact between the perovskite and P3HT, and regulate P3HT orientation and improve charge extraction and transport in the device. As a result, the PSC using the dopant-free P3HT HTM yields a power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 20.8%, along with superior stability at a relative humidity of 60%, heat at 80 °C, or under continuous light illumination.

Abstract:The Serious interfacial recombination and low-efficient hole extraction at the interface of the carbon electrode and perovskite film have strikingly limited the performance improvement of carbon-based inorganic perovskite solar cells (PSCs). Here, hydrophobic poly(3-hexylthiophene) (P3HT) and polystyrene (PS) are employed as the interlayer to modify the interface of the CsPbIBr2 perovskite and the carbon electrode for enhancing the hole extraction and reducing the interfacial recombination. The effect of the PS and P3HT interlayer on the stability of the CsPbIBr2 perovskite film and the performance of carbon-based devices are systemically investigated. Both PS and the P3HT interlayer remarkably enhance the stability of the CsPbIBr2 perovskite film by inhibiting the intrusion of ambient moisture. However, the incorporation of the PS interlayer deteriorates the efficiency of the device, mainly owing to the low tunneling rate of the holes within the insulated PS layer. By contrast, introduction of the P3HT interlayer greatly improves the performance of the carbon-based CsPbIBr2 cells. The cell with the P3HT interlayer delivers a high power conversion efficiency of 7.47%, largely increased by 36% compared with the efficiency for the control device. Additionally, the P3HT interlayer greatly promotes the long-term stability of carbon-based CsPbIBr2 PSCs in ambient conditions.

Abstract:In this work, it is found that incorporating a dipole interlayer between perovskite layer and hole‐transport layer results in a significant improvement of hot charge‐carriers injection in perovskite solar cells (PSCs). As a result, the PSC efficiency is promoted from 20.54% (control device) to 23.06%. This study provides new insights to deeply understand the effect of interfacial electrical dipole molecules on the charge‐carrier transfer dynamics in PSCs. Surface passivation engineering of perovskite films via organic functional small molecules has emerged as an effective strategy for improving the efficiency and stability of perovskite solar cells (PSCs). However, a systematic understanding of underlying mechanisms behind these improvements is still missing. In this work, two new naphthalimide‐based organic small molecules (PX, X = F, I) are designed and employed to efficiently passivate the surface defects of perovskite films in PSCs. Consequently, superior photovoltaic properties for PI‐treated PSCs are achieved with a power conversion efficiency of 23.06%, which is significantly higher than that of the reference device without passivators (20.45%). Theoretical calculations reveal that PX can give rise to interfacial electrical dipole. It is found that incorporating a dipole interlayer between perovskite layer and hole transport layer can enhance ultrafast charge‐carrier injection and suppress the charge‐carrier recombination in device, which is illustrated by transient absorption spectroscopy. These present results can provide valuable information on the understanding interfacial charge‐carrier dynamics in PSCs to further improve the device performance.

Abstract:In p-i-n type lead halide perovskite solar cells (PSCs), the poor wettability of the perovskite solution on the typically used hole transport layer, Poly[bis(4-phenyl)(2,4,6-trimethylphenyl)amine] (PTAA), is harmful to get high film quality of the perovskite film. Moreover, the formation of excess lead iodide (PbI2) deteriorates the device stability. Herein, by introducing diamine hydrobromide with different lengths on the PTAA layer, its wettability is greatly increased, leading to a more uniform perovskite film and reduced trap density. Moreover, diamine hydrobromide can reduce excess PbI2. Density functional theory (DFT) calculation further proves the strong interaction between diamine hydrobromide and PbI2; the diamine hydrobromides with different lengths present different binding energies with PbI2. Among them, hexanediamine hydrobromate (HDADBr) has the lowest binding energy with PbI2 and enables the least traps formed in the device. Moreover, HDADBr also has the weakest interaction with I--rich perovskite surface, and the distribution of I density of states is expanded, which is more conducive to the diffusion of charge carriers. The best-performed PSC is achieved in the condition of using HDADBr, which exhibits an improved power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 20.22% from 18.41% of the control device. The device stability is also notably improved; the PCE of unencapsulated PSC remains 90% of the initial value after 400 h degradation.

Abstract:Two-dimensional (2D) and quasi-2D modifications of three-dimensional (3D) perovskite active layers have contributed to advances in the performance of perovskite solar cells (PSCs). However, the ionic diffusion between the surface 2D and bulk 3D perovskites leads to the degradation of the 3D/2D perovskite heterostructures and limits the long-term stability of PSCs. Here we incorporate a cross-linked polymer (CLP) on the top of a 3D perovskite layer and then deposit a 2D perovskite layer via a vapour-assisted two-step process to form a 3D/CLP/2D perovskite heterostructure. Photoluminescence spectra and thickness-profiled elemental analysis indicate that the CLP stabilizes the heterostructure by inhibiting the diffusion of cations (formamidinium, FA + and 4-fluorophenylethylammonium, 4F-PEA + ) between the 2D and 3D perovskites. For devices based on carbon electrodes, we report small-area devices with an efficiency of 21.2% and mini-modules with an efficiency of 19.6%. Devices retain 90% of initial performance after 4,390 hours operation under maximum power point tracking and one-sun illumination at elevated temperatures.

Abstract:Migration of ions can lead to photoinduced phase separation, degradation, and current-voltage hysteresis in perovskite solar cells (PSCs), and has become a serious drawback for the organic-inorganic hybrid perovskite materials (OIPs). Here, the inhibition of ion migration is realized by the supramolecular cation-pi interaction between aromatic rubrene and organic cations in OIPs. The energy of the cation-pi interaction between rubrene and perovskite is found to be as strong as 1.5 eV, which is enough to immobilize the organic cations in OIPs; this will thus will lead to the obvious reduction of defects in perovskite films and outstanding stability in devices. By employing the cation-immobilized OIPs to fabricate perovskite solar cells (PSCs), a champion efficiency of 20.86% and certified efficiency of 20.80% with negligible hysteresis are acquired. In addition, the long-term stability of cation-immobilized PSCs is improved definitely (98% of the initial efficiency after 720 h operation), which is assigned to the inhibition of ionic diffusions in cation-immobilized OIPs. This cation-pi interaction between cations and the supramolecular pi system enhances the stability and the performance of PSCs efficiently and would be a potential universal approach to get the more stable perovskite devices.

Abstract:Two- and three-dimensional (2D/3D) heterojunctions have been widely used to improve the performance of n-type/intrinsic/p-type (NIP) structure perovskite solar cells (PSCs). However, the electron blocking nature of the 2D ligands, such as phenethylammonium (PEA + ), on the perovskite surface is not conducive in PSCs with p-type/intrinsic/n-type (PIN) structure. In this work, we improve the device performance by eliminating the 2D phase on the perovskite surface through the subsequent annealing process. After eliminating the 2D phase, a dipole layer forms by the remaining PEA + , resulting in an excellent energy level alignment between the perovskite and electron transport layer. As a result, the solar cells in the PIN structure with a 1.67 eV wide-bandgap triple-cation perovskite show an enhanced power conversion efficiency of 20.61% with a short circuit current density of 20.05 mA/cm2 and fill factor of 81.57%. Furthermore, the open-circuit voltage (V OC ) is improved from 1.20 V to 1.26 V, yielding a V OC deficit of 410 mV, which represents one of the lowest values among the PIN structured wide-bandgap PSCs.

Abstract:Combined with the superb moisture and thermal stability of two-dimensional (2D) perovskites and the excellent photoelectronic features of three-dimensional (3D) perovskites, building 3D/2D structure has been proved to be an auspicious way to improve both power conversion efficiency (PCE) and durability of perovskite solar cells (PSCs). In this work, cyclohexylammonium bromide (CMABr) as p-dopant is introduced into hole transport layer (HTL) to form 3D/2D heterostructure perovskite bilayer. It is confirmed that the formation of 2D perovskite interlayer comes from the reaction between the excess PbI2 on the surface of 3D perovskite and CMABr on the bottom of HTL, which served as moisture barrier layer to enhance the device stability. The exotic CMA+ and Br− ions could insert the ABX3 perovskite lattice to compensate A-site cation and X-site vacancies, which reduced the undesirable non-radiative recombination centers. Owing to the p-type doping, the more uniform morphology, down-shifted energy levels and improved electrical properties were obtained. Consequently, the CMABr-doped PSCs based on triple-cation (Cs+, MA+ and FA+) perovskite and double-cation (MA+ and FA+) perovskite produce maximum PCEs of 21.78 % and 23.56 %, respectively, as well as remarkable long-term device stability. The results demonstrate a novel pathway to construct 3D/2D stacking structure for highly efficient PSCs with decent stability.

Abstract:High efficiency and long‐term stability are the prerequisites for the commercialization of perovskite solar cells (PSCs). However, inadequate and non‐uniform doping of hole transport layers (HTLs) still limits the efficiency improvements, while the intrinsic instability of HTLs caused by ion migration and accumulation is difficult to be addressed by external encapsulation. Here we show the addition of a conjugated phosphonic acid (CPA) to the Spiro‐OMeTAD benchmark HTL can greatly enhance its optoelectronic properties and reliability, thus subsequently boosting the device efficiency and intrinsic stability. Featuring an optimal diprotic‐acid structure, indolo[3,2‐b]carbazole‐5,11‐diylbis(butane‐4,1‐diyl) bis(phosphonic acid) (BCZ) is developed to promote morphological uniformity and mitigate ion migration across both perovskite/HTL and HTL/Ag interfaces, leading to superior charge conductivity, reinforced ion immobilization and remarkable film stability. The dramatically improved interfacial charge collection endows BCZ‐based n‐i‐p PSCs with a champion power conversion efficiency of 24.51%. More encouragingly, the BCZ‐based devices demonstrate remarkable stability under harsh environmental conditions by retaining 90% of initial efficiency after 3000 hours in air storage. Such CPA‐modified HTLs exhibit high general applicability in flexible and large‐area devices. This work provides a facile and effective molecular strategy to reinforce charge transport layers, and paves the way for further developing robust organic HTLs for high‐efficiency and intrinsically stable optoelectronic devices. Abstract:Flexible perovskite solar cells (f-PSCs) have been attracting tremendous attention due to their potentially commercial prospects in flexible energy system and mobile energy system. Reducing the energy barriers and charge extraction losses at the interfaces between perovskite and charge transport layers is essential to improve both efficiency and stability of f-PSCs. Herein, 4-trifluoromethylphenylethylamine iodide (CF3PEAI) is introduced to form a 2D perovskite at the interface between perovskite and hole transport layer (HTL). It is found that the 2D perovskite plays a dual-functional role in aligning energy band between perovskite and HTL and passivating the traps in the 3D perovskite, thus reducing energy loss and charge carrier recombination at the interface, facilitating the hole transfer from perovskite to the Spiro-OMeTAD. Consequently, the photovoltaic performance of f-PSCs is significantly improved, leading to a power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 21.1% and a certified PCE of 20.5%. Furthermore, the long-term stability of f-PSCs is greatly improved through the protection of 2D perovskite layer to the underlying 3D perovskite. This work provides an excellent strategy to produce efficient and stable f-PSCs, which will accelerate their potential applications.

Abstract:Although perovskite solar cells have achieved great development in the device performance, the device stability is still a crucial issue hinder the further development. The ion migration is a main reason for the poor stability of the perovskite solar cells. Here, we use a cross-linking material, polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) to dope the perovskite layer to improve the operational stability. We systematically studied the effect of curing agent content in PDMS on the device performance and stability. The characterization of perovskite film indicates that PDMS primarily doped in the perovskite layer and as well as enriched at the surface of perovskite film. Doping of PDMS promoted the crystallization of perovskite phase, leading to increase of short circuit density (JSC) and fill factor (FF) of the solar cells. In addition, PDMS doping improved the operational stability of device due to the suppressing the migration of iodide ions during aging. Moreover, the higher content of curing agents used in PDMS, the better stability of the devices. This work indicates PDMS doping the perovskite layer with a suitable content of curing agent can produce a better operational stability of the perovskite solar cells.

Abstract:Adding the interface passivation layer on the perovskite is one of the most effective methods to achieve high-efficiency and high-stability perovskite solar cells (PSCs). Herein, an available novel dye molecule, namely ethyl-2-((6-hydroxyquinolin-5-yl)diazenyl)-4,5,6,7-tetrahydrobenzo[b]thiophene-3-carboxylate (HQTh-EC) was synthesized, and served as the interlayer between the perovskite absorber layer and the spiro-OMeTAD layer. It was found that the HQTh-EC passivation layer played a variety of functions, such as effectively reducing the defect states, constructing an appropriate energy level alignment, restraining the charge carrier recombination and accelerating the hole extraction. Consequently, the HQTh-EC-optimized PSCs delivered an outstanding power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 20.08%, much improved compared with the pristine PSCs (16.73%). Moreover, the HQTh-EC interlayer greatly enhanced the stability of PSCs, retaining 86% of its initial PCE after 400 h aging under ambient air with a relative humidity (RH) of 70-80%. This work provides a useful strategy to simultaneously enhance the performance and stability of PSCs by introduction of the dye, and will provide the potential application for fabricating high-performance planar devices under air environment.

Bridging the Interfacial Contact for Improved Stability and Efficiency of Inverted Perovskite Solar Cells

Abstract:[2‐(9H‐carbazol‐9‐yl) ethyl] phosphonic acid (2P) is introduced to modify the surface of the hole‐transport layer (HTL). 2P benefits the perovskite growth and interfacial contact. Moreover, 2P‐modified HTL shows better energy‐level alignment with perovskite. The 2P‐incorporated inverted perovskite solar cell delivers a high efficiency of 22.17% and keeps stable under ambient atmosphere (RH: ≈30–40%) without encapsulation for 7200 h. Inverted perovskite solar cells (PSCs) have received widespread attention due to their facile fabrication and wide applications. However, their power conversion efficiency (PCE) is reported lower than that of regular PSCs because of the undesirable interfacial contact between perovskite and the hydrophobic hole transport layer (HTL). Here, an interface regulation strategy is proposed to overcome this limitation. A small molecule ([2‐(9H‐carbazol‐9‐yl) ethyl] phosphonic acid, abbreviated as 2P), composed of carbazole and phosphonic acid groups, is inserted between perovskite and HTL. Morphological characterization and theoretical calculation reveal that perovskite bonds stronger on 2P‐modified HTL than on pristine HTL. The improved interfacial contact facilitates hole extraction and retards degradation. Upon the incorporation of 2P, inverted PSCs deliver a high PCE of over 22% with superior stability, keeping 84.6% of initial efficiency after 7200 h storage under an ambient atmosphere with a relative humidity of ≈30–40%. This strategy provides a simple and efficient way to boost the performance of inverted PSCs.

Abstract:Although the best research-cell efficiency of perovskite solar cells (PSCs) has exceeded 25%, the industrial application of PSCs is limited by further improvement of performance and stability. Interface engineering is a prospective method to overcome these issues. Here, phenylethylamine tetrafluoroborate (PEABF4) is introduced into the interlayer between the TiO2 electron transport layer (ETL) and the perovskite layer. The introduction of PEABF4 effectively passivates the oxygen vacancy via coordination of BF4 – with Ti and mitigates inherent trap-state density and nonradiative recombination in the devices. Moreover, the modification of PEABF4 optimizes the energy match between the perovskite layer and the TiO2 ETL and improves the crystal quality of the perovskite. Consequently, the PEABF4-modified PSCs achieve a power conversion efficiency of 21.21%, accompanied with excellent environmental stability, while the pristine device exhibits an efficiency of 19.25%.

Abstract:Enhancing the efficiency and stability is very critical for perovskite solar cells (PSCs) commercialization. Herein, we report an effective approach to enable highly efficient and stable PSCs by incorporating a polymer material, poly[N, N′-bis(2-octyldodecyl)-naphthalene-1,4,5,8-bis(dicarboximide)-2,6-diyl]-alt-5,5′-(2,2′-bithiophene) (named P(NDI2OD-T2)), into hole transport layer (HTL). Our research results exhibit that the addition of P(NDI2OD-T2) not only effectively improves the hole mobility and conductivity of HTL, but also makes its energy level more alignment with perovskite. More importantly, ultrafast carrier results demonstrate that the introduction of P(NDI2OD-T2) into Spiro-OMeTAD HTL can effectively improve the extraction and transfer of hot carriers from perovskite layer to HTL, and consequently reduce the recombination of charge carriers in the device. As a result, PSCs based on Spiro + P(NDI2OD-T2) as a HTL shows an enhanced power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 24.20 %, which is much higher than that of control device without P(NDI2OD-T2) (21.94 %). Furthermore, the un-encapsulated P(NDI2OD-T2)-treated PSCs exhibit excellent humidity, thermal and light stabilities, with the devices maintaining 94 % of its initial efficiency after 3000 h at ≈40 % humidity, 95 % of its initial efficiency after storage at 65 °C and 85 °C for 600 h, and 90 % of its initial efficiency after 600 h under one sun light irradiation, respectively. This work provides an effective strategy for improving the device efficiency and long-term stability of PSCs.

Abstract:By introducing diethyl (hydroxymethyl) phosphonate (DHP) to a perovskite precursor solution, the stability of the precursor solution and the device is improved successfully. DHP inhibits the reactivity of the iodide‐ions and formamidinium ions thus ensuring the desired stoichiometry and enhanced efficiency of 22.91%. The corresponding devices show excellent performance reproducibility and stability in air and nitrogen. Solution processing of perovskite solar cells (PSCs) is highly promising for the high‐throughput production of cost‐effective devices. Although PSCs have achieved great advances in power conversion efficiency, challenges still remain in the reproducibility of high‐quality perovskite thin film with simultaneously improved precursor solution stability. Here, a reactive inhibition strategy by introducing diethyl (hydroxymethyl) phosphonate (DHP) in perovskite precursor solution is successfully employed to improve the stability of precursor solution and the performance of corresponding device. DHP inhibits the reactivity of the iodide and formamidinium ions through multiple chemical bonds, ensuring the stability of the precursor solution. In addition, due to chelation interaction of Pb2+ with the oxygen of PO in DHP, the DHP in the perovskite film improves the film quality with desired stoichiometry by reducing the defects and the content of lead iodide. The DHP‐doped precursor solution and corresponding devices show excellent performance reproducibility and super stability under ambient conditions for more than 50 days, which illustrates the commercial feasibility for scalable fabrication.

Simultaneous Suppression of Multilayer Ion Migration via Molecular Complexation Strategy toward High‐Performance Regular Perovskite Solar Cells

Abstract:The migration and diffusion of Li+, I- and Ag impedes the realization of long-term operationally stable perovskite solar cells (PSCs). Herein, we report a multifunctional and universal molecular complexation strategy to simultaneously stabilize hole transport layer (HTL), perovskite layer and Ag electrode by the suppression of Li+, I- and Ag migration via directly incorporating bis(2,4,6-trichlorophenyl) oxalate (TCPO) into HTL. Meanwhile, TCPO co-doping results in enhanced hole mobility of HTL, advantageous energy band alignment and mitigated interfacial defects, thereby leading to facilitated hole extraction and minimized nonradiative recombination losses. TCPO-doped regular device achieves a peak power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 25.68% (certified 25.59%). The unencapsulated TCPO doped devices maintain over 90% of their initial efficiencies after 730 h of continuous operation under one sun illumination, 2800 h of storage at 30% relative humidity, and 1200 h of exposure to 65 °C, which represents one of the best stabilities reported for regular PSCs. This work provides a new approach to enhance the PCE and long-term stability of PSCs by host-guest complexation strategy via rational design of multifunctional ligand molecules.
