Abstract:In this article, we studied the magnetic and transport properties by magnetization, resistivity, and specific heat measurements for EuCu4As2 crystals with a rhombohedral structure. Strongly anisotropic magnetism and rich magnetic phases were observed under magnetic field in this compound. Interestingly, we observed two types of magnetoresistance: a large negative magnetoresistance (-55%, at 35 K, 9 T) near the magnetic transition temperature, due to reduction of magnetic scattering under magnetic field; a large positive magnetoresistance (60% at 2 K, 9 T) at lower temperatures when Eu2+ moments ordering ferromagnetically, similar to that observed in the non-magnetic isostructural analogue SrAg4As2 with possible nontrivial topological bands, which may be related to its special band structure.(c) 2022 Elsevier B.V. Abstract:The hexagonal EuMX (M=Cu, Ag, Au; X=P, As, Sb, Bi) compounds host interesting electronic and magnetic properties, with seemingly intertwined topology and transport properties. One key feature of such behavior is the nature of the ordered magnetic structure. In EuCuAs, a topological Hall effect is caused by a conical spin structure that emerges when a field is applied within the easy-plane (H ⊥ c) of the helical ground state that exists below the Neel temperature of TN=14K . On the other hand, EuCuP is an easy-axis ferromagnet with a Curie temperature TC near 31 K. Here, we investigate the evolution of the magnetic properties in EuCuAs1−xPx single crystals with 0.16 ≤x≤ 0.75 . Crystals grown by cooling slowly in a Sn flux possessed macroscale inhomogeneity of As/P, particularly for arsenic-rich crystals. However, growth in a Sn flux via an isothermal dwell at 600∘C produced crystals that were homogeneous within the resolution of the probes utilized to investigate these crystals. The unit cell volumes, Curie-Weiss temperatures, and magnetic transitions trend linearly with composition and the magnetic anisotropy is reduced in the alloys. The magnetization data of crystals with x=0.16 and 0.24 indicate an easy-plane antiferromagnetic ground state while behavior similar to ferromagnetism is observed for crystals with x≥ 0.41 . The temperature-dependent magnetization data possess multiple transitions for compositions near EuCuAs0.75P0.25 , revealing a competition of ground states in this arsenic-rich region of the phase diagram. Abstract:The semiconductor-type EuMnSb 2 single crystal with an orthorhombic structure (space group Pnma , No.62) was synthesized using the Sn-flux method, and its physical properties were systematically investigated by magnetization, specific heat, and resistivity measurements. The magnetic and specific heat features reveal two successive antiferromagnetic (AFM) transitions exist separately at T N 1 ∼ 21 K and T N 2 ∼ 9 K, which have different responses to external magnetic field, and magnetic anisotropy is enhanced as the temperature is below T N 1 . When the magnetic field is about 1.7 T and parallels the a -axis of the EuMnSb 2 crystal, a spin-flop transition of the AFM order appears. Electronic transport measurements show that the single crystal of EuMnSb 2 manifests semiconductor characteristic and magnetic field-induced semiconductor-to-metal transitions. In addition, we observe a colossal negative magnetoresistance for both in-plane and out-of-plane resistivity and two-fold period anisotropic magnetoresistance. Combining magnetic susceptibility, specific heat capacity and resistivity properties, we present a phase diagram which can be divided into AFM semiconductor, paramagnetic semiconductor and paramagnetic metal. These unique properties indicate that EuMnSb 2 can provide a platform for investigating the interplay between magnetic order, and charge transport.

Percolative Superconductivity in Electron-Doped Sr_1-xEu_xCuO_2+y Films

Abstract:Electron-doped infinite-layer Sr1-xEuxCuO2+y films over a wide doping range have been prepared epitaxially on SrTiO3(001) using reactive molecular beam epitaxy. In-plane transport measurements of the single-crystalline samples reveal a dome-shaped nodeless superconducting phase centered at x -0.15, a Fermi-liquid behavior and pronounced upturn in low-temperature resistivity. We show that the resistivity upturn follows square-root temperature dependence, suggesting the emergence of superconductivity via a three-dimensional percolation process. The percolative superconductivity is corroborated spectroscopically by imaging the electronic phase separation between superconducting and metallic phases with low-temperature scanning tunneling microscopy. Furthermore, we visualize interstitial and apical oxygen anions that rapidly increase in number as x > 0.12 and elucidate their impacts on the superconductivity and normal-state resistivity.
Large Magnetoresistance and Large Magnetothermopower Effect in the Dirac Material EuMn0.8Sb2.

Abstract:In this article, the structure, transport and magnetic properties were studied in details for EuMn0.8Sb2 crystals with the orthorhombic structure and Mn deficiencies. It was found that the temperature dependence of the resistivity exhibits a metallic behavior in the whole measuring temperature range, different from that in the crystals without Mn deficiencies. A large positive magnetoresistance (MR) (similar to 127% at 2 K and similar to 25% at 300 K, in 9 T field) was observed, which can be ascribed to the combination of semiclassical MR and quantum limit MR of Dirac electrons. We also observed the high mobility of the carriers and large magnetothermopower effect at low temperatures, and two magnetic transitions emerging at similar to 24 K and similar to 10 K, respectively, corresponding to the antiferromagnetic ordering and canted arrangement of the Eu moments. Our findings shed new light on the intrinsic properties of EuMn0.8Sb2 and demonstrate the existence of Dirac fermions.

Abstract:In this study, the magnetism, transport properties, and electronic structure of ferromagnetic EuCuP single crystals were investigated using magnetic and transport measurements and first-principles calculations. The magneto-transport behavior of EuCuP exhibits a large anisotropy for H // c and H // ab. There is an anomalous Hall effect (AHE) and a nonlinear AHE for H // c . However, there is only a normal Hall effect for H // ab , in which the system shows strong ferromagnetism, which is contradictory to the understanding of AHE in conventional ferromagnetic materials. Theoretical calculations showed that there is a small anomalous Hall conductivity (AHC) platform near the Fermi level for M // c state. However, the AHC is almost zero near the Fermi level for M // ab state, which is consistent with experimental measurements. These results indicate that the transverse transport behavior in EuCuP is dominated by an intrinsic mechanism related to electron band structures.

Enhancement of superconductivity in electron-hole coexisting Sr$_{1-x}$Eu$_{x}$CuO$_{2+y}$ films

Abstract:We report transport measurements of infinite-layer cuprate Sr$_{1-x}$Eu$_{x}$CuO$_{2+y}$ films with controlled electron (by trivalent europium) and hole (by interstitial apical oxygen) carriers grown on SrTiO$_3$(001) with molecular beam epitaxy. An unusual enhancement of superconductivity upon moderate electron-hole coexistence in the films is found, which spans over the whole superconducting phase diagram and becomes more prominent in the underdoped regime. The superconductivity exhibits a two-dimensional nature with a thickness of approximately 5.2 nm, irrespective of the varying carriers, confirmed by angle-resolved magnetoresistance measurements and the Berzzinsky-Kosterlitz-Thouless transition. Nevertheless, the electron-hole coexistence enlarges the thermal activation energy of vortex motion that deviates obviously from the usual logarithmic evolution with the magnetic field. Our results offer a promising perspective to understand and enhance the high-temperature superconductivity in cuprates.

Abstract:Double perovskite compounds (Sr2−xEux)FeMoO6 (0≤x≤0.3) were prepared by solid-state reaction at high temperature. Crystal structure, magnetic and transport properties of the compounds were investigated. The crystal structure of the compounds changes from an I4/m lattice to an Fm3¯m lattice around x=0.1. The unit-cell volume decreases with the doping level in both the I4/m lattice and the Fm3¯m lattice. The resistivity of the compounds shows a metal–semiconductor transition, and the transition temperature TM–S increases with the doping level. However, Curie temperature (TC) of the compounds exhibits a weak dependence on the doping level. The saturation magnetization (MS) at 100K varies almost linearly with the anti-site defect concentration and agrees well with the simple FIM model. In contrast to the Ce-, Pr-, Nd- and Sm-doped Sr2FeMoO6, the difference of MS of (Sr2−xEux)FeMoO6 between 5 and 100K indicates that the moment of Eu3+ is antiparellel to that of Fe3+ at low temperature.
Engineering superconducting properties of multiferroic copper oxide heterostructures

Abstract:Oxide heterostructures have repeatedly been shown to display apical properties at the interfaces, some of which favorable to the formation of two-dimensional electron systems, as well as high transition temperature superconductivity. In this study, we propose a novel heterostructure to potentially achieve near room-temperature superconductivity, via the carrier injection in cuprate interfaces with ferro-electrics. Using a digital design approach guided by density-functional theory, the systems of XTiO3/XCuO3/XTiO3 are thoroughly examined, confirming the formation of a two-dimensional electron gas at the cuprous oxide interface. Via the manipulation of lattice parameters, the key ingredients for two-dimensional electron gas formation is explored. We apply cluster dynamical mean-field theory on the cuprous oxide plane and probe the superconducting properties of the system XTiO3/XCuO3/XTiO3 . As a result, we see a marked increase of superconducting ordering parameter near the fully occupied regime, a known marker for the superconducting transition temperature.

Abstract:The electronic structure and the physical properties of quantum materials can be significantly altered by charge carrier doping and magnetic state transition. Here we report a discovery of a giant and reversible electronic structure evolution with doping in a magnetic topological material. By performing high-resolution angle-resolved photoemission measurements on EuCd2As2,we found that a huge amount of hole doping can be introduced into the sample surface due to surface absorption. The electronic structure exhibits a dramatic change with the hole doping which can not be described by a rigid band shift. Prominent band splitting is observed at high doping which corresponds to a doping-induced magnetic transition at low temperature (below -15 K) from an antiferromagnetic state to a ferromagnetic state. These results have established a detailed electronic phase diagram of EuCd2As2 where the electronic structure and the magnetic structure change systematically and dramatically with the doping level. They further suggest that the transport, magnetic and topological properties of EuCd2As2 can be greatly modified by doping. These work will stimulate further investigations to explore for new phenomena and properties in doping this magnetic topological material.
Anisotropic Transport and Optical Spectroscopy Study on Antiferromagnetic Triangular Lattice Eucd2as2: an Interplay Between Magnetism and Charge Transport Properties

Abstract:We present anisotropic transport and optical spectroscopy studies on EuCd_2As_2. The measurements reveal that EuCd_2As_2 is a low carrier density semimetal with moderate anisotropic resistivity ratio. The charge carriers experience very strong scattering from Eu magnetic moments, resulting in a Kondo-like increase of resistivity at low temperature. Below the antiferromagnetic transition temperature at T_N= 9.5 K, the resistivity drops sharply due to the reduced scattering from the ordered Eu moments. Nevertheless, the anisotropic ratio of ρ_c/ρ_ab keeps increasing, suggesting that the antiferromagnetic coupling is along the c-axis. The optical spectroscopy measurement further reveals, besides an overdamped reflectance plasma edge at low energy, a strong coupling between phonon and electronic continuum. Our study suggests that EuCd_2As_2 is a promising candidate displaying intriguing interplay among charge, magnetism and the underlying crystal lattice.
Magnetization dependent anisotropic topological properties in EuCuP

Abstract:The correlation between magnetism and nontrivial topological band structure serves as a unique venue for discovering exotic topological properties. Combining magnetotransport measurements and first-principles calculations, we unveil herein that the hexagonal EuCuP holds topologically trivial state in the paramagnetic structure, while strong magnetization dependent anisotropic topological states in the spin-polarization structures. Specifically, it hosts a trivial topological state in the in-plane spin-polarization structure, while a Weyl semimetal state in the out-of-plane spin-polarization structure. Our scaling analysis suggests that the intrinsic Berry curvature in the spin-polarization structures can account for the observed large anisotropic anomalous Hall effect. First-principles calculations show that the magnetization and the spin-orbit coupling simultaneously play essential roles for the appearance of the four pairs of Weyl points in the out-of-plane spin-polarization structure. Our work therefore establishes in EuCuP the intimate relation between magnetism and the nontrivial topological states, which would be instructive for future study on this key issue of topological physics.

Abstract:Based on first-principles calculations with the DFT + U method, the couplings of lattice, charge, spin, and electronic behaviors underlying the Eu-Mn charge transfer in a strongly correlated system of EuMnO3 were investigated. The potential valence transition from Eu3+/Mn3+ to Eu2+/Mn4+ was observed in a compressed lattice with little distortions, which is achieved under hydrostatic pressure and external strain. The intraplane anti-ferromagnetism (AFM) of Mn is proved to be instrumental in the emergence of Eu2+. Furthermore, we calculated the magnetic exchange interactions within two equilibrium structures of Eu3+Mn3+O3 and (Eu2+Mn4+O3). Mn-Mn ferromagnetic exchange in the ab-plane is enhanced strongly in the Eu2+ Mn4+O3 structure, contributing to the existence of mixed states. The versatile electronic structures were obtained within the Eu2+Mn4+O3 phase by imposing different magnetic configurations on the Eu and Mn sublattice, attributed to the coupling of charge transfer and magnetic orderings. It is found that the intraplane ferromagnetic ordering of Mn leads to a metallic electronic structure with the coexistence of Eu2+ and Eu3+, while the intraplane AFM Mn spin ordering leads to insulating states only with Eu2+. Notably, a half-metallic characteristic emerges at the magnetic ground state of CF ordering (C-type AFM for the Eu sublattice and ferromagnetic for the Mn sublattice), which makes such a supposed phase more intriguing than the conventional experimental phase. Additionally, the mixture of delocalized 4f with 5d states of Eu in the background of Mn 3d and O 2p orbitals implies a pathway of Eu 4f 5d <-> O 2p <-> Mn 3d for charge transfer between Eu and Mn. Our calculation shows that the Eu-Mn charge transfer could be expected in compressed EuMnO3 and the introduction of Eu2+ 4f states near the Fermi level plays an important role in manipulating the interlinks of charge and spin together with electronic behaviors.

Abstract:Thermoelectric properties of Cu2Sn1−2xZnxFexS3 (x = 0–0.1) doped with Zn and Fe as acceptor at Sn-site were investigated. With increased doping, the primary phase was observed to change from cation-ordered monoclinic phase to cation-disordered cubic and tetragonal phases. Favored by the growth of carrier concentration, and as well the enhanced DOS effective mass caused by Fe-doping, an optimal power factor ~ 12 μWcm−1 K−2 was obtained with x = 0.1 at 773 K. Meanwhile, the lattice thermal conductivity in the dual-doped samples was found to be further lower than that in the singly doped counterparts due to cations disordering and bond softening. These led to a maximal dimensionless figure of merit, ZT ~ 0.7 (x = 0.05), synergistically. Moreover, the magnetoelectronic coupling induced by Fe was observed to influence the carrier concentration sensitively, while little affecting the carrier’s mobility and effective mass.
Manipulating Magnetism and Transport Properties of EuCd_2P_2 with a Low Carrier Concentration

Abstract:Materials that exhibit strongly coupled magnetic order and electronicproperties are crucial for both fundamental research and technologicalapplications. However, finding a material that not only shows remarkablemagnetoresistive responses but also has an easily tunable ground state remainsa challenge. Here, we report successful manipulation of the magnetic andtransport properties of EuCd_2P_2, which is transformed from an A-typeantiferromagnet (T_N = 11 K) exhibiting colossal magnetoresistanceinto a ferromagnet (T_C = 47 K) with metallic behavior. The dramaticalteration results from a low hole concentration of 10^19 cm^-3 inducedby changing the growth conditions. Electronic structure and total energycalculations confirm the tunability of magnetism with a small carrierconcentration for EuCd_2P_2. It is feasible to switch between the magneticstates by using field-effect to control the carrier density, thereby changingthe magneto-electronic response. The controllable magnetism and electricaltransport of EuCd_2P_2 make it a potential candidate for spintronics.

Abstract:The production of Reactive Oxygen Species (ROS) is one of the key events occurring during the response of plants to environmental changes, and contributing to establish adaptive signaling pathways. A plasma membrane bound NADPH oxidase enzyme has been evidenced as the ROS producing system in various plant-microorganisms interactions. We very recently reported, that a protein of the 14-3-3 family was able to interact directly with the C-terminus part of this NADPH oxidase, and that modification of its expression in tobacco cells led to reduced amount of ROS production upon elicitation. In this addendum, we summarize this work, present additional results, and propose an hypothetic model of regulation of this oxidase in a plant defense context.
Spin-orbital polarons in electron doped copper oxides

Abstract:Present work demonstrates the formation of spin-orbital polarons in electron doped copper oxides, that arise due to doping-induced polarisation of the oxygen orbitals in the CuO$_2$ planes. The concept of such polarons is fundamentally different from previous interpretations. The novel aspect of spin-orbit polarons is best described by electrons becoming self-trapped in one-dimensional channels created by polarisation of the oxygen orbitals. The one-dimensional channels form elongated filaments with two possible orientations, along the diagonals of the elementary CuO$_2$ square plaquette. As the density of doped electrons increases multiple filaments are formed. These may condense into a single percollating filamentary phase. Alternatively, the filaments may cross perpendicularly to create an interconnected conducting quasi-one-dimensional web. At low electron doping the antiferromagnetic (AFM) state and the polaron web coexist. As the doping is increased the web of filaments modifies and transforms the AFM correlations leading to a series of quantum phase transitions - which affect the normal and superconducting state properties.

Abstract:A single material achieving multiple topological phases can provide potential application for topological spintronics, whereas the candidate materials are very limited. Here, we report the structure, physical properties, and possible emergence of multiple topological phases in the newly discovered, air-stable EuCuBi single crystal. EuCuBi crystallizes in a hexagonal space group P63/mmc (No. 194) in ZrBeSi-type structure with an antiferromagnetic (AFM) ground state below TN = 11.2 K. There is a competition between AFM and ferromagnetic (FM) interactions below TN revealed by electrical resistivity and magnetic susceptibility measurements. With the increasing magnetic field, EuCuBi evolves from the AFM ground state with a small amount of FM component, going through two possible metamagnetic phases, finally reaches the field-induced FM phase. Based on the first-principles calculations, we demonstrate that the Dirac, Weyl, and possible mirror Chern insulator can be achieved in EuCuBi by tuning the temperature and applying magnetic field, making EuCuBi a promising candidate for exploring multiple topological phases.

Abstract:Emergency of superconductivity at the instabilities of antiferromagnetism (AFM), spin/charge density waves has been widely recognized in unconventional superconductors. In copper-oxide superconductors, spin fluctuations play a predominant role in electron pairing with electron dopants yet composite orders veil the nature of superconductivity for hole-doped family. However, in electron-doped ones the ending point of AFM is still in controversy for different probes or its sensitivity to oxygen content. Here, by carefully tuning the oxygen content, a systematic study of Hall signal and magnetoresistivity up to 58 Tesla on optimally doped La2-xCexCuO4+-{\delta} (x = 0.10) thin films identifies two characteristic temperatures at 62.5+-7.5 K and 25+-5 K. The former is quite robust whereas the latter becomes flexible with increasing magnetic field, thereby linked to two- and three-dimensional AFM, evident from the multidimensional phase diagram as a function of oxygen as well as Ce dopants. Consequently, the observation of extended AFM phase in contrast to {\mu}SR probe corroborates an elevated critical doping in field, providing an unambiguous picture to understand the interactions between AFM and superconductivity.
