Abstract:Freeze-thaw (F-T) damage is one of the common types of damage in concrete durability problems. The use of sensors to monitor the health of concrete during freeze-thaw conditions can offer real-time information about the status of concrete. In this study, fiber Bragg grating (FBG) sensors were used to record the strain and temperature histories of concrete specimens under F-T cycles. The results of the experiments demonstrated that during the F-T process, the concrete specimen exhibited different extremes on the temperature at the center and the top position. By calculating the cumulative residual strain, it is found that the cumulative residual strain at top position of the top-exposed specimen stops growing after 50 freeze-thaw cycles, while that of the top-sealed specimen keeps growing slowly within 200 freeze-thaw cycles. After 100 freeze-thaw cycles, the cumulative residual strain at the center position of both coating regimes began to increase, although the rate of increase was larger for the top exposed specimens than for the top sealed specimens. High water saturation of pores caused by internal water migration is the main factor leading to residual strain in concrete during freeze-thaw. The X-ray computed tomography (CT) analysis revealed that both the number of pores and the average pore size progressively decreased from the surface to the center.
Deterioration characteristics of the bond between reinforcement and concrete subjected to freezing-thawing cycles and steel corrosion

Abstract:The de-icing salt induced surface scaling of concrete and the salt solution could cause serious corrosion of reinforcement in reinforced concrete structures.As a result,the cracking along the reinforcement appears on the surface of concrete and the bond properties between concrete and reinforcement deteriorate.The bond experiments of reinforced concrete beams specimens which are subjected to freezing-thawing cycles and accelerating corrosion of reinforcing steel bar are carried out.The effects of freezing-thawing cycles and the characteristics of corrosion on the bond are studied.The results show that the bond properties of concrete and steel bar deteriorate under the corrosion of steel bar and freezing-thawing cycles of concrete.Based on the experimental results,the bond strength and deterioration model subjected to freezing-thawing cycles and reinforcement corrosion are put forward.The results may provide the reference for the durability design of concrete structures in the deicing-frosting environment.

Abstract:The present study concerns the quantification of the environmental factors influencing the durability of concrete structures under on-site frost environments, including the number of freeze-thaw cycles, average freezing rate and time proportional coefficient of water saturation in concrete. A statistical method is put forward to get the on-site freeze-thaw cycles by using the average annual number of negative-temperature days as an index. In addition, a practical formula is obtained to predict the natural freeze-thaw cycles accordingly. Then, a conceptual approach considering the time proportion of concrete in saturated condition is proposed for general atmospheric environment. According to the average freezing rate in the freezing and thawing, the proportional coefficient of concrete damage in different freeze-thaw environments is obtained. Based on the aforementioned factors, relationship between different freeze-thaw environmental conditions is established. As an example, procedure of predicting the equivalent number of laboratory freeze-thaw cycles from on-site freeze-thaw cycles is given. Thus, the relationship between on-site environment and indoor experiment is established.

Abstract:Once ice forms in highly saturated concrete material, internal tensile stress will be generated and causes damage to the material, which is a serious problem for concrete structures in cold and wet regions. On one hand, each component (porous body, ice and liquid) should satisfy the compatibility of stress and strain, which has been discussed by the poromechanical theories. On the other hand, if some empty voids exist, the hydraulic pressure will release when liquid water escapes from the expanded area according to Darcy's law. Recent closed freeze-thaw tests on the saturated mortar showed a consistent tendency: as the number of freeze-thaw cycles (FTC) increases, the deformation changes from the expansion to the contraction. In order to make clear the physical and mechanical changes during this process, a more comprehensive hydraulic model is developed, which combines both the mechanisms mentioned above. The estimated strain behavior by this model is in a good agreement with experimental measurements, and also, it has good potential and is more flexible to be applied to different cases such as different saturation degrees and cooling rates. The permeability change can be also considered in this model as a reflection of frost damage level.

Abstract:Evolution of internal relative humidity (RH) and deterioration of concrete under cyclic freeze–thaw (F–T) load were studied. RH values of concrete specimens were monitored upon freezing and thawing. Compressive strength, mass loss, visual ratings and porosimetry were used to evaluate changes in concrete. Decreasing water to cement ratio (w/c) decreased the steady-state internal RH. RH–temperature curves showed that freezing temperature was independent of F–T cycles, while thawing temperature varied with F–T cycle and w/c. More severe deterioration, but less alteration of pore structure, occurred in higher w/c concrete – increasing w/c increased ice formation in pores, and thus effective crystallization pressure and liquid pressure.

Abstract:In seasonally frozen regions, concrete pavement is exposed to cycles of freeze-thaw and erosion from de-icing salt, which can lead to unfavorable service conditions and vulnerability to damage. This paper examines the compressive strength, flexural-tensile strength, abrasion resistance, permeability, and spacing factor of concrete, taking into account the impact of various curing conditions, de-icing salt solutions, and mass fractions on the concrete's freeze-thaw resistance. Two test methods, the single-face method and the fast-freezing method, were used to comparatively analyze the freeze-thaw resistance of concrete. The analysis was based on the surface scaling, water absorption rate, mass loss rate, relative dynamic elastic modulus, and relative durability index. The results indicate that the presence of salt solution significantly worsened the degree of concrete damage caused by freeze-thaw cycles. The use of freeze-thaw media, specifically sodium chloride (), calcium chloride (), and potassium acetate () at mass fractions of 5%, 4.74%, and 5%, respectively, had the greatest impact on the surface scaling of concrete. However, their effect on the water absorption rate was inconsistent. When the freeze-thaw medium was water, the concrete's relative dynamic elastic modulus and relative durability index were 9.6% and 75.3% higher, respectively, for concrete cured in 20 °C—95% RH conditions compared to those cured in 0 °C—50% RH conditions. We propose a comprehensive relative durability index () by combining the results of two methods of freeze-thaw tests. The of concrete cured in 0 °C—50% RH conditions was 83.8% lower than that of concrete cured in 20 °C—95% RH conditions when exposed to a freeze-thaw medium of 5% mass fraction solution. To evaluate the salt freeze-thaw resistance of concrete pavement, it is recommended to use surface scaling and together.

Abstract:In cold regions, concrete structures are often subject to the coupled effect of mechanical loading with freeze–thaw (F–T) cycles, which results in a reduced service life. In this paper, the state of the art and challenges regarding the durability of concrete subjected to mechanical loading coupled with F–T cycles are reviewed in depth. The experimental setups used to simulate the coupled effect of mechanical loading with F–T cycles were summarized first, including the shapes of the specimens, operation methods, advantages, and limitations. Subsequently, relevant research methods such as numerical simulation methods and damage characterization methods were presented. Afterward, special attention was dedicated to the mechanism elaboration and performance improvement of the concrete subject to the coupled effect. Finally, some thoughts on potential directions for future work were discussed.

Concrete Durability after Load Damage and Salt Freeze-Thaw Cycles

Abstract:To determine how the performance of concrete changes after initial load damage and salt freezing, concrete samples were first subjected to loading and unloading, and were then put into salt solutions to carry out rapid freeze-thaw cycle (FTC) experiments. Salt solutions were created based on the saline soil of western Jilin, China, for use in salt freeze-thaw testing. This determined the change law of the compressive strength and the dynamic elastic modulus (DEM). Additionally, low-field nuclear magnetic resonance technology and a scanning electron microscope were applied to investigate the pore characteristics and microstructure of concrete samples after FTCs. This study found that when the concrete specimens were subjected to an initial load of 0.3f under 50 FTCs, the loss in the compressive strength increased by 24% when the concrete was subjected to freeze-thaw cycles in freshwater and increased by 24% when concrete was subjected to freeze-thaw cycles in a 6.8% composite salt solution compared with the specimens without the initial load. When the concrete was subjected to FTCs in a 6.8% composite salt solution 50 times, the loss in the compressive strength increased by 110% for concrete without an initial load and increased by 109% when the concrete was subjected to an initial load of 0.3f compared with the specimens under FTCs in freshwater. The persistent effect of the FTCs also aggravated chloride ion erosion in the concrete, which gradually reduced the concrete's permeability resistance. Internal pores in the concrete, especially the proportion of above-medium-sized pores, gradually increased along with the increase in the number of FTCs. There is a good linear correlation between the change rule of compressive mechanical properties and the change rules of mass, DEM, and pore characteristics inside the concrete under rapid FTCs in different salt solutions.

Abstract:The durability of concrete materials in harsh environmental conditions, particularly in cold regions, has garnered significant attention in civil engineering research in recent years. Concrete structures in these areas are often damaged by the combined effects of alkali–silica reaction (ASR) and freeze–thaw cycles, leading to structural cracks and significant safety hazards. Numerous studies have demonstrated that polypropylene fiber concrete exhibits excellent crack resistance and durability, making it promising for applications in cold regions. This study elucidates the impact of alkali content on concrete durability by comparing the mechanical properties and durability of different alkali–aggregate concretes. The principal experimental methodologies employed include freeze–thaw cycle experiments, which examine patterns of mass loss; fluctuations in the dynamic modulus of elasticity; and changes in mechanical properties before and after freeze cycles. The findings indicate that increased alkali content in concrete reduces its strength and durability. At 100% alkali–aggregate content, compressive strength decreases by 35.5%, flexural strength by 32.9%, mass loss increases by 35.85%, relative dynamic elastic modulus by 39.4%, and residual strength by 97.28%, indicating higher alkali content leads to diminished durability. Additionally, this paper introduces a constitutive damage model, validated by a strong correlation with experimental stress–strain curves, to effectively depict the stress–strain relationship of concrete under varying alkali contents. This research contributes to a broader understanding of concrete durability in cold climates and guides the selection of materials for sustainable construction in such environments.

Abstract:Abstract In this article, the deterioration law of concrete under the coupling action of freeze–thaw cycles and salt solution erosion is studied through the comprehensive thermal analysis, the field emission electron microscope, and the nuclear magnetic resonance, and the influence of salt solution type and salt solution concentration is considered. The results show that the freeze–thaw damage of concrete in the salt solution is the combined effect of the expansion pressure of the freeze–thaw erosion product, the crystallization pressure of the salt solution, and the frost heave pressure of the fresh water; the damage degree increases with the increase of freezing and thawing cycles; the damage degree of concrete in the chloride solution is greater than that in the sulfate solution and fresh water before 150 freezing and thawing cycles; the damage degree of concrete in the sulfate solution is greater than that in the chloride solution after 150 freezing and thawing cycles; the pores size of concrete in the salt solution is larger than that in fresh water, the main peak of the difference of pore size proportion shifts to the harmful pore area, and the secondary peak and third peak appear in the seriously harmful pore area; the pore diameters of the main peak, the secondary peak and the third peak of concrete in different salt solution, and the limiting pore diameters are 0.0662, 1.145, and 10.116 μm, respectively; the safe service life of concrete in salt solution environment after freezing and thawing cycles is predicted by the Weibull distributed life evaluation model. The maximum life after the freeze–thaw cycle is 33 years, which is at least 42% lower than that in the fresh water environment after freezing and thawing cycles.

Abstract:In order to improve the accuracy of the analysis of the impact of freeze–thaw cycle on concrete durability in a salt freezing environment, the numerical simulation of the impact of the freeze–thaw cycle on concrete durability in a salt freezing erosion environment is studied in this paper. Firstly, considering the influence of axial force and bending moment on the relationship between bending moment and curvature, a concrete fiber beam column model is established. Then, according to the joint influence of temperature field, stress field and seepage field on concrete in the process of freezing and thawing, the control differential equation of the freezing and thawing cycle is established. The freeze–thaw damage section is divided, the non-uniform distribution of freeze–thaw damage is determined, and the division of the freeze–thaw damage section is completed. According to the linear relationship between freeze–thaw damage degree, relative dynamic elastic modulus, freeze–thaw cycle times and position variables, the durability of concrete is numerically simulated, and the attenuation law of bond strength at different section depths after freeze–thaw is determined. The results show that the temperature curve simulated by the design method is consistent with the actually measured temperature curve, which can better reduce the temperature change of the inner core of the test block during freezing and thawing, and the relative dynamic elastic modulus is in good agreement with the actual value, which can prove that the method in this paper has certain practical application value. It is expected to provide some reference for solving the durability problem of concrete in a salt frost erosion environment and the optimal design of concrete structures.

Effects of curing conditions with different temperature and humidity on damage evolution of concrete during freeze–thaw cycling

Abstract:To clarify the relationship between the curing conditions (temperature and humidity) of concrete and its frost resistance, several concretes with different water-binder (w/b) ratios and curing conditions were investigated by observing their microstructural damage in a freeze–thaw (F-T) environment using nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR). The results reveal that the curing temperature and humidity significantly influence the pore distribution and porous quality of concrete. With the decrease of the curing temperature and humidity and the increase of the w/b ratio, the proportion of macropores (0.05 μm < r < 1 μm) and microcracks (r ≥ 1 μm) significantly increases. Compared with standard curing, the proportion of macropores and microcracks in concrete under the curing conditions of 10 °C-RH70% and 3 °C-RH50% increased by 16.21% and 26.71% respectively, while the frost resistance of concrete decreased. With the increase of the F-T cycles, the proportion of macropores and microcracks in concrete increased, the proportion of micropores (r < 0.01 μm) and mesopores (0.01 μm < r < 0.05 μm) decreased, and the T2 spectrum curve gradually moved to the right. Notably, the above-mentioned microstructure changes are reflected in the relative dynamic elastic modulus (RDEM). The total ratio of mesopores to macropores significantly influences the damage degree of concrete. Compared with the increase of the w/b ratio, the lack of curing temperature and humidity have greater influence on the frost resistance of concrete. The RDEM of concrete decreases with the increase of the F-T cycles, which is consistent with the change of the microcrack proportion.

Experimental Evaluation of the Concrete Damage and Pore Characteristics under Salt-Freezing Cycles

Abstract:Herein, ordinary silicate concrete specimens are prepared to study the damage law of a cement-concrete material under the effects of salt erosion and a freeze–thaw environment. NaCl, NaHCO3, and Na2SO4 solutions are separately produced, according to the characteristics of saline soil, to conduct an experimental study on the concrete characteristics during quick salt freezing cycles, and to analyse the changes in its compressive strength, mass loss, and dynamic elastic modulus (DEM) under freeze–thaw cycles. Low-field nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and scanning electronic microscopy are used to investigate the change in the microstructure of concrete specimens under salt freeze–thaw cycles (FTCs). The results show the loss in compressive strength, mass, DEM, and NMR spectrum signal increased by 1.5–3 times, 3–5 times, 1.5–2.5 times, and 2–4 times, respectively, for concrete specimens under 50–100 FTCs in 6.8% composite salt solution, in comparison to fresh water. Apparent spalling, decreases in the DEM, and reductions in the compressive strength occur in concrete when increasing the number of salt FTCs. The number of internal cracks in the concrete structure increase under the combined action of salt crystallization, moisture absorption, and freeze–thaw. The changes in the internal microscopic pore volume in concrete structures exhibit the same trend with changes in the macro mechanical properties of concrete. The correlation coefficients between the changes in each peak in the NUR spectrum and the changes in the compressive strength of concrete specimens under FTCs in freshwater or low-concentration salt solutions are both larger than 0.7, calculated using the grey correlation degree method. Therefore, these changes could be used as a potential evaluation index for salt frozen damage to concrete structures.

Abstract:Experimental research on durability of high-performance synthetic fibers reinforced concrete (HPSFRC) is conducted based on its excellent mechanical performance. The results indicate that HPSFRC shows superior resistances to sulfate attack and freezing-thawing over the ordinary concrete due to its excellent anti-crack performance. HPSFRC has an optimum dosage of high-performance synthetic fiber (HPSF) for achieving good mechanical performance and durability. Additionally, the influences of freezing-thawing cycles, concentration of sodium sulfate solution, and fiber content on the freezing-thawing resistance of HPSFRC are analyzed using response surface methodology. The analysis results show that the freezing-thawing cycles have the most significant influence on freezing-thawing resistance, followed by concentration of sodium sulfate solution and fiber content.

Abstract:The aim of this study was to reveal the macroscopic and mesoscopic deterioration behaviors of concrete under the coupling effect of chlorine salt erosion and the freezing–thawing cycle. The rapid freezing–thawing test was carried out in a 5% chlorine salt environment. The macroscopic characteristics of concrete were analyzed by testing the mass, the relative dynamic modulus of elasticity, and the compressive strength of concrete under different freezing–thawing cycles. Using CT scanning technology and three-dimensional reconstruction technology, the pore structure, CT value, and surface deviation of concrete before and after freezing–thawing were analyzed. Based on the changes of solid volume, pore volume, and solid CT value of concrete, the calculation method of relative CT value was proposed, and the damage model was established with relative CT value as the damage variable. The results demonstrate that the mass loss rate decreases in the beginning and then increases in the process of chlorine salt erosion and freezing–thawing, and the smaller the concrete size, the greater the mass loss rate. The relative dynamic modulus of elasticity decreases gradually, slowly at the initial stage and then at a faster rate, and the compressive strength loss rate increases gradually. The pore quantity, porosity, and volume loss rate of concrete increase in a fluctuating manner, whereas the relative CT value decreases. The comprehensive analysis shows that the chlorine salt frost resistance of concrete is negatively related to the water-cement ratio when the freezing–thawing cycle is fixed. The damage model could better reflect the freezing–thawing damage degree of concrete with different water cement ratios, and the damage evolution process is well described by the Weibull function.

Experimental Study on Mechanical Properties and Pore Structure Deterioration of Concrete under Freeze–Thaw Cycles

Abstract:Understanding the evolution of mechanical properties and microscopic pore structure of concrete after freeze–thaw cycles is essential to assess the durability and safety of concrete structures. In this work, the degradation law of mechanical properties and damage characteristic of micro-structure of concrete with two water-cement ratios (w/c = 0.45 and 0.55) is investigated under the condition of freezing–thawing cycles. The influence of loading strain rate on dynamic compressive strength is studied. The microscopic pore structure after frost damage is measured by low-field nuclear magnetic resonance (LF-NMR) technique. Then, a damage model based on the porosity variation is established to quantitatively describe the degradation law of macroscopic mechanical properties. The test results show that the relative dynamic modulus of elasticity (RDME), dynamic compressive strength, flexural strength, and splitting tensile strength of concrete decrease with the increase of freeze–thaw cycles. Empirical relations of concrete dynamic increase factor (DIF) under the action of freeze–thaw cycles are proposed. Moreover, the experimental results of NMR indicate that the porosity as well as the proportion of meso-pores and macro-pores of concrete gradually increased with the increasing of freeze–thaw cycles. The research results can provide reference and experimental support for the anti-frost design theory and durability life prediction of hydraulic concrete structures in cold regions.

Abstract:This paper evaluates the influence of mineral admixtures partially replacing cement, sea sand replacing quartz, sea water replacing fresh water on ultra-high performance concrete (UHPC). The fluidity and mechanical properties were studied. Besides, the impermeability, chloride resistance and freeze-thaw resistance were investigated. Failure modes, scanning electron microscope (SEM) analysis, mass loss, relative dynamic modulus of elasticity and mechanical properties of UHPCs after freeze-thaw cycles were conducted. The results showed the fluidity of UHPC paste gradually increases with the improvement of water-binder ratio. It is recommended that the water-binder ratio of UHPC be set at 0.19. The fluidity also increases with the improvement of the content of slag, fly ash and water reducer, but decreases with the improvement of silica fume content. The flexural and compressive strengths of UHPC enhance with the improvement of the content of silica fume, but reduce with the improvement of the content of fly ash and slag. The UHPCs made of quartz sand, river sand and sea sand, all, achieve a high strength. UHPCs prepared at standard curing conditions, with or without steel fibers, mixed by artificial seawater and made of sea sand, exhibited excellent impermeability and chloride resistance. The frost resistant grade of all UHPC specimens prepared by standard curing are greater than F500 exhibiting excellent freeze-thaw resistance and sustainability.

Abstract:To investigate the effects of nano-SiO2 (NS) and polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) fibers on the durability and mechanical properties of cementitious composites subjected to saline freeze–thaw cycling, a series of PVA fiber-reinforced cementitious composite (PFRCC) specimens were prepared using various fiber contents, and a series of NS and PVA fiber-reinforced cementitious composite (NPFRCC) specimens were prepared using various combinations of NS and fiber contents. Durability and fracture toughness tests were subsequently conducted on the specimens after different numbers of saline freeze–thaw cycles. The results indicate that the degradation of material properties can be divided into slow and accelerated damage stages before/after 50 freeze–thaw cycles. The durability and fracture toughness of the specimen series tended to increase, then decrease with increasing NS and PVA contents, suggesting optimum levels. When the PVA fiber content was 0.5%, PFRCC specimens had the best durability after saline freeze–thaw cycles; when the NS and PVA fiber contents were 1.0% and 0.5%, respectively, NPFRCC specimens had the best durability and fracture properties, and the initiation toughness, destabilization toughness, and fracture energy after 100 saline freeze–thaw cycles were 120.69%, 160.02%, and 451.31%, respectively. The results of this study may guide future exploration of the durability and mechanical properties of concrete subjected to freeze–thaw action.

Research on Performance Deterioration of Internally Cured Pavement Concrete under the Coupling Effect of Salt Freeze-Thaw

Abstract:This paper aims at solving the material durability problem caused by spraying deicing salt on pavement concrete in the northern winter. Super absorbent polymer (SAP) was adopted as an internal curing agent to enhance the durability of pavement concrete. Curing parameters including particle size and dosage of SAP and curing condition were optimized based on mortar tests by means of the grey target decision method. The deterioration rule of durability and mechanical properties of pavement concrete internally cured by different SAP dosages after salt freeze-thaw cycles were explored through rapid freeze-thaw test. Combined with the characteristics of pore structure, hydration and microstructure, the influence mechanism of SAP on the salt freeze-thaw resistance of pavement concrete was revealed. The experimental results showed that: (i) The reduction in mass loss rate and relative dynamic modulus was significantly improved by SAP internal curing with moderate dosage; (ii) The more freeze-thaw cycles the specimen underwent, the greater the increase in strength; (iii) After 75 cycles, the chloride ion erosion depth could be decreased by approximately 23.18%. Moreover, the addition of SAP could refine the pore size, inhibit the generation of shrinkage microcracks, and promote the degree of cement hydration in the late stage, which improved the internal density of the cement concrete structure. Therefore, the deterioration of pavement under the coupling effect of salt freeze-thaw was reduced.
Hydration and durability of low-heat cementitious composites for dam concrete: Thermodynamic modeling and experiments

Abstract:To demonstrate the superiority of dam concrete, a systematic study was conducted to examine the durability of low-heat cementitious composite (LHCC) that is composed of Portland cement (PC), fly ash (FA), and MgO expansive additive (MEA) with PC as the reference group. Through GEMS software, XRD, SEM, and EDS, the difference mechanism in durability between the two cementitious materials was revealed from the perspectives of phase evolution and microstructural characteristics. Water at 40 °C was adopted for curing in the study to match the long-term temperature field inside the concrete dam. According to the results of the RCM, accelerated carbonation, and rapid freeze–thaw cycle experiments, LHCC outperforms PC in durability. The hydration process of LHCC is simulated by inputting the reaction degree of each phase calculated using the MPK model into the GEMS software. The thermodynamic model output shows that portlandite first increases and then decreases as LHCC hydration proceeds, and C-S-H and stratlingite are supplemented in the later stage, which reflects the high performance of FA involved in hydration. In addition, hydrotalcite that is capable of chloride ion adsorption is increasingly generated with the consumption of brucite. As is clearly shown in the SEM images, there are denser space grids formed by overlapping C-S-H in LHCC with almost no capillary pores. Meanwhile, when combined with the results of EDS, it is strongly demonstrated that the FA in LHCC can be hydrated to produce dense fibrous C-S-H in large amounts, providing a basis for the positive development of durability.
