Abstract:The recently discovered microbial reductive defluorination of two C6 branched and unsaturated fluorinated carboxylic acids (FCAs) provided valuable insights into the environmental fate of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) and potential bioremediation strategies. However, a systematic investigation is needed to further demonstrate the role of C═C double bonds in the biodegradability of unsaturated PFASs. Here, we examined the structure-biodegradability relationships of 13 FCAs, including nine commercially available unsaturated FCAs and four structurally similar saturated ones, in an anaerobic defluorinating enrichment and an activated sludge community. The anaerobic and aerobic transformation/defluorination pathways were elucidated. The results showed that under anaerobic conditions, the α,β-unsaturation is crucial for FCA biotransformation via reductive defluorination and/or hydrogenation pathways. With sp2 C–F bonds being substituted by C–H bonds, the reductive defluorination became less favorable than hydrogenation. Moreover, for the first time, we reported enhanced degradability and defluorination capability of specific unsaturated FCA structures with trifluoromethyl (−CF3) branches at the α/β-carbon. Such FCA structures can undergo anaerobic abiotic defluorination in the presence of reducing agents and significant aerobic microbial defluorination. Abstract:The fate of per and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) in aqueous filmforming foams (AFFFs) under anaerobic conditions has not been well characterized, leaving major gaps in our understanding of PFAS fate and transformation at contaminated sites. In this study, the biotransformation of 6:2 fluorotelomer thioether amido sulfonate (6:2 FtTAoS), a component of several AFFF formulations, was investigated under sulfate-reducing conditions in microcosms inoculated with either pristine or AFFF-impacted solids. To identify the transformation products, we used high-resolution mass spectrometry and employed suspect-screening and nontargeted compound identification methods. These analyses demonstrated that 6:2 FtTAoS was transformed primarily to a stable polyfluoroalkyl compound, 6:2 fluorotelomer thioether propionate (6:2 FtTP). It did not undergo further reactions to produce the perfluoroalkyl carboxylates and fluorotelomer sulfonates and carboxylates that were observed during aerobic transformations. Here, the 6:2 FtTP was recalcitrant to biotransformation, indicating the stability of the thioether group under sulfate reducing conditions. The total oxidizable precursor (TOP) assay was used to assess the presence of other PFASs. Although nearly all of the PFAS mass initially present was recovered from the pristine microcosms, only 67% of the initial PFAS mass was recovered from the contaminated microcosms, suggesting the formation of volatile biotransformation products or those that could not be detected by the TOP assay.

Abstract:6:2 FTOH and 8:2 FTOH [FTOHs, F(CF2)(n)CH2CH2OH, n = 6, 8] are the principal polyfluorinated raw materials used to manufacture FTOH-based products, which may be released to WWTPs during their product life cycle. For the first time, anaerobic biotransformation of FTOHs and key biotransformation intermediates in WWTP digester sludge under methanogenic conditions was investigated. 6:2 FTOH was transformed to 6:2 FTCA, [F(CF2)(6)CH2COOH, 32-43 mol %], 6:2 FTUCA [F(CF2)(5)CF=CHCOOH, 1.8-8.0 mol %], and 5:3 acid [F(CF2)(5)CH(2)CH(2)COQH, 18-23 mol 96] by day 90 and day 176 in two separate studies. 8:2 FTOH was transformed by day 181 to 8:2 FTCA (18 mol %), 8:2 FTUCA (5.1 mol %), and 7:3 acid (27 mol %). 6:2 and 8:2 FTOH anaerobic biotransformation led to low levels of perfluorohexanoic acid (PFHxA, <= 0.4 mol %) and perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA, 0.3 mol %), respectively. 6:2 FTUCA anaerobic biotransformation led to a newly identified novel transient intermediate 3-fluoro 5:3 acid [F(CF2)(5)CFHCH2COOH] and 5:3 acid, but not 5:2 sFTOH [F(CF2)(5)CH(OH)CH3] and alpha-OH 5:3 acid [F(CF2)(5)CH2CH(OH)COOH], two precursors leading to PFPeA (perfluoropentanoic acid) and PFHxA. Thus, FTOH anaerobic biotransformation pathways operated by microbes in the environment was likely inefficient at shortening carbon chains of FTOHs to form PFCAs (perfluorinated carboxylic acids). These results imply that anaerobic biotransformation of FTOH-based products may produce polyfluorinated acids, but is not likely a major source of PFCAs detected in anaerobic environmental matrices such as anaerobic digester sludge, landfill leachate, and anaerobic sediment under methanogenic conditions.

Abstract:Production of 8:2 fluorotelomer alcohol (8:2 FTOH) for industrial and consumer products, including aqueous film-forming foams (AFFFs) used for firefighting, has resulted in its widespread occurrence in the environment. However, the fate of 8:2 FTOH at AFFF-impacted sites remains largely unknown. Using AFFF-impacted soils from two United States Air Force Bases, microcosm experiments evaluated the aerobic biotransformation of 8:2 FTOH (extent and byproduct formation) and the dose-response on microbial communities due to 8:2 FTOH exposure. Despite different microbial communities, rapid transformation of 8:2 FTOH was observed during a 90-day incubation in the two soils, and 7:2 secondary fluorotelomer alcohol (7:2 sFTOH) and perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) were detected as major transformation products. Novel transformation products, including perfluoroalkane-like compounds (1H-perfluoroheptane, 1H-perfluorohexane, and perfluoroheptanal) were identified by liquid chromatography-high resolution mass spectrometry (LC-HRMS) and used to develop aerobic 8:2 FTOH biotransformation pathways. Microbial community analysis suggests that species from genus Sphingomonas are potential 8:2 FTOH degraders based on increased abundance in both soils after exposure, and the genus Afipia may be more tolerant to and/or involved in the transformation of 8:2 FTOH at elevated concentrations. These findings demonstrate the potential role of biological processes on PFAS fate at AFFF-impacted sites through fluorotelomer biotransformation.

Abstract:Fluorinated liquid crystal monomers (FLCMs) have been suggested as emerging contaminants, raising global concern due to their frequent occurrence, potential toxic effects, and endurance capacity in the environment. However, the environmental fate of the FLCMs remains unknown. To fill this knowledge gap, we investigated the aerobic microbial transformation mechanisms of an important FLCM, 4-[difluoro(3,4,5-trifluorophenoxy)methyl]-3, 5-difluoro-4'-propylbiphenyl (DTMDPB), using an enrichment culture termed as BG1. Our findings revealed that 67.5 ± 2.1% of the initially added DTMDPB was transformed in 10 days under optimal conditions. A total of 14 microbial transformation products obtained due to a series of reactions (e.g., reductive defluorination, ether bond cleavage, demethylation, oxidative hydroxylation and aromatic ring opening, sulfonation, glucuronidation, O-methylation, and thiolation) were identified. Consortium BG1 harbored essential genes that could transform DTMDPB, such as dehalogenation-related genes [e.g., glutathione S-transferase gene (GST), 2-haloacid dehalogenase gene (2-HAD), nrdB, nuoC, and nuoD]; hydroxylating-related genes hcaC, ubiH, and COQ7; aromatic ring opening-related genes ligB and catE; and methyltransferase genes ubiE and ubiG. Two DTMDPB-degrading strains were isolated, which are affiliated with the genus Sphingopyxis and Agromyces. This study provides a novel insight into the microbial transformation of FLCMs. The findings of this study have important implications for the development of bioremediation strategies aimed at addressing sites contaminated with FLCMs.

Abstract:Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are recalcitrant synthetic organohalides known to negatively impact human health. Short-chain fluorotelomer alcohols are considered the precursor of various perfluorocarboxylic acids (PFCAs) in the environment. Their ongoing production and widespread detection motivate investigations of their biological transformation. Dietzia aurantiaca strain J3 was isolated from PFAS-contaminated landfill leachate using 6:2 fluorotelomer sulphonate (6:2 FTS) as a sulphur source. Resting cell experiments were used to test if strain J3 could transform fluorotelomer alcohols (6:2 and 4:2 FTOH). Strain J3 transformed fluorotelomer alcohols into PFCAs, polyfluorocarboxylic acids and transient intermediates. Over 6 days, 80 % and 58 % of 6:2 FTOH (0.1 mM) and 4:2 FTOH (0.12 mM) were degraded with 6.4 % and 14 % fluoride recovery respectively. Fluorotelomer unsaturated carboxylic acid (6:2 FTUCA) was the most abundant metabolite, accounting for 21 to 30 mol% of 6:2 FTOH (0.015 mM) applied on day zero. Glutathione (GSH) conjugates of 6:2/4:2 FTOH and 5:3 FTCA adducts were also structurally identified. Proteomics studies conducted to identify enzymes in the biotransformation pathway have revealed the role of various enzymes involved in β oxidation. This is the first report of 6:2/4:2 FTOH glutathione conjugates and 5:3 FTCA adducts in prokaryotes, and the first study to explore the biotransformation of 4:2 FTOH by pure bacterial strain.

Abstract:Aqueous film-forming foam (AFFF) products are used in industrial and military firefighting around the globe. These products contain fiuoroalkylthioamido sulfonates, fluoroalkylthiobetaine, and other related substances as the major ingredients, which can be biotransformed in the environment to form 6:2 fluorotelomer sulfonate (6:2 FTSA, F(CF2)(6)CH2CH2SO3-) as one of the major initial biotransformation products. Limited information is available on 6:2 FTSA aerobic biotransformation in activated sludge and pure microbial culture. This is the first study to report 6:2 FTSA biotransformation in aerobic and anaerobic sediment. 6:2 FTSA was rapidly biotransformed in aerobic river sediment with a half-life less than 5 d. Major stable transformation products observed after 90 d included 5:3 Acid [F(CF2)(5)CH2CH2COOH), 16 mol%), PFPeA [F(CF2)(4)COOH, 21 mol%1 and PFHxA (F(CF2)(5)COOH, 20 mol%). 6:2 fluorotelomer alcohol [6:2 FTOH, F(CF2)(6)CH2CH2OH] was readily biotransfomed whereas 6:2 FTSA biotransformation did not occur in anaerobic sediment over 100 d, indicating that the enzymatic desulfonation step limited 6:2 FTSA biotransformation in anaerobic sediment. These results suggest that 6:2 FTSA related products, after release to the aerobic environment, is likely to biodegrade forming 5:3 Acid, PFPeA and PFHxA. This study also indicates that 6:2 FTSA formed from its aforementioned precursors may be persistent in the anaerobic environment after their potential release. Abstract:A survey of the authors' recent contributions are given to a new multi-constrained and multi-criteria optimization approach to the design of optimal compensators for general MIMO nonlinear feedback control systems in several practical considerations including such as robust stabilization with the presence of uncertainty, tracking and model matching, and disturbance rejection problems. First, the general framework for nonlinear closed-loop feedback systems is described in a Banach space setting in the time domain. Then, several typical optimal feedback design problems are formulated. Moreover, existence, uniqueness and characteristics theorems are established. Finally, a convergent recursive algorithm for solving the general constrained optimization is included.
Impact of 6:2 fluorotelomer alcohol aerobic biotransformation on a sediment microbial community.

Abstract:Sediment microbial communities are responsible for many chemical biotransformation processes in the aquatic environment and play a critical role in various ecosystems and biogeochemical cycling. However, the impact of polyfluoroalkyl substances on sediment microbial communities remains unclear. These substances are increasingly being used in consumer and industrial products to replace environmentally persistent perfluoroalkyl substances. In this study, we investigated the effects of low (5 mg/L) and high (15 mg/L) doses of 6:2 fluorotelomer alcohol [6:2 FTOH, F(CF2)(6)CH2CH2OH] on the structure of a sediment microbial community. 6:2 FTOH biotrans-formation was rapid in the sediment mixture with a half-life <3 days, regardless of the initial doses. After 28 days, major products produced in the high dose condition included 28mol% 5:2 sFTOH [F(CF2)(5)CH(OH)CH3], 9.6 mol% 5:3 Acid [F(CF2)(5)CH2CH2COOH] and 11 mol% PFHxA [F(CF2)(5)COOH], while 73 mol% 5:2 sFTOH, 23 mol% 5:3 Acid and 26 mol% PFHxA were observed in the low dose condition. In the original (control) sediment without 6:2 FTOH dosing, Proteobacteria was the predominant microorganism (18%), followed by Chloroflexi (14%), Verrucomicrobia (13%), Firmicutes (3.4%), Bacterioidetes (2.4%), Actinobacteria (1.7%) and Planctomycetes (1.3%). The presence of 6:2 FTOH and the accumulation of transient transformation products in the sediment exerted selection pressure on themicrobial taxonomic distribution and diversity. Our observations indicate that potential 6: 2 FTOH degraders and tolerant strains, such as Dokdonella spp., Thauera spp., Albidovulum spp. and Caldanaerovirga spp., existed in the sediment mixture and began to dominate over time. This suggests that these genera might have higher tolerance towards elevated 6: 2 FTOH and its transformation products. These findings on the characterization of sediment microbial community stability and dynamics will help predict changes in response to perfluoroalkyl and polyfluoroalkyl substances and also help identify robust microbial strains to degrade polyfluoroalkyl substances in the environment. Abstract:Although 6:2 fluorotelomer sulfonate (6:2 FTS) is a common ingredient in aqueous film-forming foam (AFFF) formulations, its environmental fate at AFFF-impacted sites remains poorly understood. This study investigated the biotransformation of 6:2 FTS in microcosms prepared with soils collected from two AFFF-impacted sites; the former Loring Air Force Base (AFB) and Robins AFB. The half-life of 6:2 FTS in Loring soil was 43.3 days; while >60 mol% of initially spiked 6:2 FTS remained in Robins soil microcosms after a 224-day incubation. Differences in initial sulfate concentrations and the depletion of sulfate over the incubation likely contributed to the different 6:2 FTS biotransformation rates between the two soils. At day 224, stable transformation products, i.e., C4C7 perfluoroalkyl carboxylates, were formed with combined molar yields of 13.8 mol% and 1.2 mol% in Loring and Robins soils, respectively. Based on all detected transformation products, the biotransformation pathways of 6:2 FTS in the two soils were proposed. Microbial community analysis suggests that Desulfobacterota microorganisms may promote 6:2 FTS biotransformation via more efficient desulfonation. In addition, species from the genus Sphingomonas, which exhibited higher tolerance to elevated concentrations of 6:2 FTS and its biotransformation products, are likely to have contributed to 6:2 FTS biotransformation. This study demonstrates the potential role of biotransformation processes on the fate of 6:2 FTS at AFFF-impacted sites and highlights the need to characterize site biogeochemical properties for improved assessment of 6:2 FTS biotransformation behavior.
Aerobic biodegradation of 2 fluorotelomer sulfonamide-based aqueous film-forming foam components produces perfluoroalkyl carboxylates

Abstract:The biodegradation of 2 common fluorotelomer surfactants used in aqueous film forming foams (AFFFs), 6:2 fluorotelomer sulfonamide alkylamine (FTAA) and 6:2 fluorotelomer sulfonamide alkylbetaine (FTAB), was investigated over 109 d with aerobic wastewater-treatment plant (WWTP) sludge. Results show that biodegradation of 6:2 FTAA and 6:2 FTAB produces 6:2 fluorotelomer alcohol (FTOH), 6:2 fluorotelomer carboxylic acid (FTCA), 6:2 fluorotelomer unsaturated carboxylic acid (FTUCA), 5:3 FTCA, and short-chain perfluoroalkyl carboxylates (PFCAs). Additional degradation products included 6:2 fluorotelomer sulfonamide (FTSAm), which was a major degradation product in the presence of either active or sterilized sludge, whereas 6:2 fluorotelomer sulfonate (FTSA) production was measured with sterilized sludge only. Six additional degradation products were tentatively identified by quadrupole time-of-flight mass spectrometry (qTOF-MS) and attributed to N-dealkylation and oxidation of 6:2 FTAA. Detection, Occurrence, and Fate of Fluorotelomer Alcohols in Municipal Wastewater Treatment Plants

Abstract:Fluorotelomer alcohols (FTOHs) are the most well-known precursors of perfluoroalkyl carboxylic acids (PFCAs), but limited information is available on their occurrence and fate in municipal wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs). The occurrence of FTOHs was investigated in influent, secondary effluent, and sludge of 12 municipal WWTPs in nine cities of China. FTOHs were detected in all WWTPs, and 8:2 FTOH was the predominant congener, with concentrations of 2.10-11.0 ng/L, 3.05-12.4 ng/L, and 0.36-1.91 ng/g dry weight in the influent, secondary effluent, and sludge, respectively. Relatively high proportions of long-chain FTOHs (C10-16) were mainly detected in sludge samples. The mass balance of FTOHs and PFCAs in one of the WWTPs with an anaerobic-anoxic-oxic process was further explored. The decrease of mass loads was observed for 4:2 FTOH (mass change percentage: 21 +/- 3.3%), 8:2 FTOH (22 +/- 1.5%), and 10:2 FTOH (29 +/- 7.3%) through aerobic treatment, while the increase of mass loads was observed for 12 PFCAs from 18 +/- 16% (perfluorononanoic acid) to 165 +/- 15% (perfluorobutyric acid)), suggesting the potential biotransformation of FTOHs to PFCAs in the aerobic unit. This work provides the first report on the occurrence of FTOHs in sludge samples of municipal WWTPs and their mass balance and highlights a new emission route to environment via WWTPs.
Degradation Pathways and Complete Defluorination of Chlorinated Polyfluoroalkyl Substances (Clx−PFAS)

Abstract:Chlorinated polyfluoroalkyl substances (Clx−PFAS) have been developed and applied for decades, but they have just been recognized as an emerging class of pollutants. This study systematically investigated the degradation of three types of Clx−PFAS structures, including omega-chloroperfluorocarboxylates (ω-ClPFCAs, n=1,2,4,8 Cl−CnF2nCOO−), 9-chlorohexadecafluoro-3-oxanonane-1-sulfonate (F-53B, Cl−(CF2)6−O−(CF2)2SO3−) and polychlorotrifluoroethylene oligomer acids (CTFEOAs, n=1,2,3 Cl−(CF2CFCl)nCF2COO−) under UV/sulfite treatment. The results lead to a series of transformative insights. After initial reductive dechlorination by hydrated electron (eaq–), multiple pathways occur, including hydrogenation, sulfonation, and dimerization. In particular, this study identified the unexpected hydroxylation pathway that convert the terminal ClCF2− into −OOC−, which is critical for the rapid and deep defluorination of F-53B. The hydroxylation of the middle carbons in CTFEOAs also triggers the cleavage of C−C bonds, yielding multiple −COO− groups to promote defluorination. Hence, the Cl atoms in Clx−PFAS enhance defluorination in comparison with the perfluorinated analogs. After UV/sulfite treatment, the HO• oxidation of the residue leads to ~100% defluorination of all ω-ClPFCAs and CTFEOAs, without generating toxic ClO3− from Cl−. This study renovates and further advances the mechanistic understanding of PFAS degradation in “advanced reduction” systems. It also suggests the synergy between “more degradable” molecular design and cost-effective degradation technology to achieve the balanced sustainability of fluorochemicals.
Fluorochemicals Biodegradation As a Potential Source of Trifluoroacetic Acid (TFA) to the Environment.

Abstract:The anthropogenic release of trifluoroacetic acid (TFA) into the environmental media is not limited to photochemical oxidation of CFC alternatives and industrial emissions. Biological degradation of some fluorochemicals is expected to be a potential TFA source. For the first time, we assess if the potential precursors [6:2 fluorotelomer alcohol (6:2 FTOH), 4:2 fluorotelomer alcohol (4:2 FTOH), acrinathrin, trifluralin, and 2-(trifluoromethyl)acrylic acid (TFMAA)] can be biologically degraded to TFA. Results show that 6:2 FTOH was terminally transformed to 5:3 polyfluorinated acid (5:3 FICA; 12.5 mol%), perfluorohexanoic acid (PFHxA; 2.0 mol%), perfluoropentanoic acid (PFPeA; 1.6 mol%), perfluorobutyric acid (PFBA; 1.7 mol%), and TFA (2.3 mol%) by day 32 in the landfill soil microbial culture system. 4:2 FTOH could remove multiple -CF2 groups by microorganisms and produce PFPeA (2.6 mol%), PFBA (17.4 mol%), TFA (7.8 mol%). We also quantified the degradation products of TFMAA as PFBA (1.3 mol%) and TFA (6.3 mol%). Furthermore, we basically analyzed the biodegradation contribution of short-chain FTOH as raw material residuals in commercial products to the TFA burden in the environmental media. We estimate global emission of 3.9-47.3 tonnes of TFA in the period from 1961 to 2019, and project 3.8-46.4 tonnes to be emitted from 2020 to 2040 via the pathway of 4:2 and 6:2 FTOH biodegradation (0.6-7.1 and 0.6-7.0 tonnes in China, respectively). Direct evidence of the experiments indicates that biodegradation of fluorochemicals is an overlooked source of TFA and there are still some unspecified mechanisms of TFA production pathways. Biotransformation of 6:2 fluorotelomer sulfonate and microbial community dynamics in water-saturated one-dimensional flow-through columns

Abstract:Nearly all per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) biotransformation studies reported to date have been limited to laboratory-scale batch reactors. The fate and transport of PFAS in systems that more closely represent field conditions, i.e., in saturated porous media under flowing conditions, remain largely unexplored. This study investigated the biotransformation of 6:2 fluorotelomer sulfonate (6:2 FTS), a representative PFAS of widespread environmental occurrence, in one-dimensional water-saturated flow-through columns packed with soil obtained from a PFAS-contaminated site. The 305-day column experiments demonstrated that 6:2 FTS biotransformation was rate-limited, where a decrease in pore-water velocity from 3.7 to 2.4 cm/day, resulted in a 21.7–26.1 % decrease in effluent concentrations of 6:2 FTS and higher yields (1.0–1.4 mol% vs. 0.3 mol%) of late-stage biotransformation products (C 4 C 7 perfluoroalkyl carboxylates). Flow interruptions (2 and 7 days) were found to enhance 6:2 FTS biotransformation during the 6–7 pore volumes following flow resumption. Model-fitted 6:2 FTS column biotransformation rates (0.039–0.041 cmw3/gs/d ) were ∼3.5 times smaller than those observed in microcosms (0.137 cmw3/gs/d ). Additionally, during column experiments, planktonic microbial communities remained relatively stable, whereas the composition of the attached microbial communities shifted along the flow path, which may have been attributed to oxygen availability and the toxicity of 6:2 FTS and associated biotransformation products. Genus Pseudomonas dominated in planktonic microbial communities, while in the attached microbial communities, Rhodococcus decreased and Pelotomaculum increased along the flow path, suggesting their potential involvement in early- and late-stage 6:2 FTS biotransformation, respectively. Overall, this study highlights the importance of incorporating realistic environmental conditions into experimental systems to obtain a more representative assessment of in-situ PFAS biotransformation.

Abstract:8:2 fluorotelomer carboxylic acid (8:2 FTCA), an important precursor of perfluorocarboxylic acids (PFCAs), is widely detected in environment and biotas. Hydroponic exposures were conducted to investigate the accumulation and metabolism of 8:2 FTCA in wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) and pumpkin (Cucurbita maxima L.). Endophytic and rhizospheric microorganisms co-existing with the plants were isolated to investigate their contributions to degrade 8:2 FTCA. Wheat and pumpkin roots could take up 8:2 FTCA efficiently with the root concentration factor (RCF) as 5.78 and 8.93, respectively. 8:2 FTCA could be biotransformed to 8:2 fluorotelomer unsaturated carboxylic acid (8:2 FTUCA), 7:3 fluorotelomer carboxylic acid (7:3 FTCA), and seven PFCAs with 2-8 carbon chain length in plant roots and shoots. Cytochromes P450 (CYP450) and glutathione-S-transferase (GST) activities in plants were significantly increased, while flavin-dependent monooxygenases (FMOs) activities were not changed, suggesting that CYP 450 and GST were involved in the transformation of 8:2 FTCA in plant tissues. Twelve 8:2 FTCA-degrading endophytic (8 strains) and rhizospheric (4 strains) bacterial strains were isolated from root interior, shoot interior and rhizosphere of plants, respectively. These bacteria were identified as Klebsiella sp. based on the morphology and 16S rDNA sequence, and they could biodegrade 8:2 FTCA to intermediates and stable PFCAs.

Abstract:Chlorinated polyfluorocarboxylic acids (Cl-PFCAs) derived from the widely used chlorotrifluoroethylene oligomers and polymers may enter and influence the aquatic environment. Here we report the substantial defluorination of Cl-PFCAs by an anaerobic microbial community via novel pathways triggered by anaerobic microbial dechlorination. Cl-PFCAs first underwent microbial reductive, hydrolytic and eliminative dechlorination, with the hydrolytic dechlorination leading to the highest spontaneous defluorination. Hydrolytic dechlorination was favoured with increased Cl substitutions. An isolated, highly enriched, anaerobic defluorinating culture was dominated by two genomes that were most similar to those of Desulfovibrio aminophilus and Sporomusa sphaeroides , both of which exhibited defluorination activity towards chlorotrifluoroethylene tetramer acid. The results imply that anaerobic non-respiratory hydrolytic dechlorination plays a critical role in the fate of chlorinated polyfluoro chemicals in natural and engineered water environments. The greatly enhanced biodegradability by Cl substitution also sheds light on the design of cost-effective treatment biotechnologies, as well as alternative polyfluoroalkyl substances that are readily biodegradable and less toxic.
