Abstract:The use of a tripodal Schiff base, tris[N-(2-(4-(dimethylamino)pyridylmethyl)-2-iminoethyl]amine (PyNMe23Tren), as a highly active claw-type ligand for photo-induced atom transfer radical polymerization (Photo-ATRP) is reported. CuBr2 / PyNMe23Tren is employed as the catalyst for Photo-ATRP of styrene (St) under the irradiation of visible or ultraviolet light. Well-defined polystyrene (PSt) could be synthesized with high chain-end functionality confirmed by in situ chain extension and PSt-Br macroinitiator for the secondary polymerization of St. Through switching the light "on" and "off", temporal control of Photo-ATRP was successfully demonstrated. After the polymerization, the reaction system appeared stratification and the upper layer PSt could be facilely separated from the system.

Abstract:Tripodal heptadentate amine ligands, tris[N-(2-pyridylmethyl)-2-aminoethyl]amine (Py3H3Tren) and tris[N-(2-pyridylmethyl)-N-methyl-2-aminoethyl]amine (Py3Me3Tren), are used as the active ligands for atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP). Both of them evolve from a Schiff base ligand, tris[N-(2-pyridylmethyl)-2-iminoethyl]amine (Py3Tren), through simple reduction and methylation reactions. Electrospray ionization mass spectrometry is used to investigate the coordination between the ligands and CuBr2 at an equimolar amount in the solution. It reveals that CuBr2 / Py3H3Tren and CuBr2 / Py3Me3Tren are tripod claw-shaped complexes. Electrochemical studies show that CuBr2 / Py3H3Tren has a more negative redox potential and higher reactivity than the other two counterparts. The order of KATRP of CuBr2 / ligand is Py3H3Tren > Py3Me3Tren > Py3Tren. Subsequently, CuBr2 / Py3H3Tren and CuBr2 / Py3Me3Tren are employed as the catalysts for the supplemental activators and reducing agents (SARA) ATRP of methyl acrylate (MA). Well-defined poly(MA) with controlled molecular weight and low Mw / Mn could be synthesized with the almost quantitative monomer conversion at room temperature, and CuBr2 / Py3Me3Tren has the fastest reaction rate. Photo-induced atom transfer radical polymerization (Photo-ATRP) of MA using Py3H3Tren and Py3Me3Tren as the ligand are also performed. Photo-ATRP using Py3H3Tren has the fastest reaction rate, while the polymerizations using Py3Me3Tren has shown lower polydispersity.

Abstract:Atom-transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) is a powerful and versatile technique for the synthesis of welldefined polymers with precise control over the molecular weight and architecture. Photoinduced ATRP (photoATRP) is a variant of ATRP based on the transfer of radical polymers through a photochemical process, offering numerous benefits over traditional ATRP, including reduced environmental impact and improved polymer yields. Monte Carlo (MC) simulation is an attractive tool for simulating photoATRP, enabling one to predict microscopic properties of the polymers. In this work, a dynamic Monte Carlo (DMC) model is developed for the photoATRP processes at microscopic resolution. The dependency information of individual chains' length on the radical, dormant, and dead polymers is captured. Furthermore, the polymerization process simulation of photoATRP systems based on the developed DMC method for temporal control over polymer growth is established. Several facets on the enhancement of temporal control are investigated under the condition of light intermittency.
Mechanism of Photoinduced Metal-Free Atom Transfer Radical Polymerization: Experimental and Computational Studies.

Abstract:Photoinduced metal-free atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) of methyl methacrylate was investigated using several phenothiazine derivatives and other related compounds as photoredox catalysts. The experiments show that all selected catalysts can be involved in the activation step, but not all of them participated efficiently in the deactivation step. The redox properties and the stability of radical cations derived from the catalysts were evaluated by cyclic voltammetry. Laser flash photolysis (LFP) was used to determine the lifetime and activity of photoexcited catalysts. Kinetic analysis of the activation reaction according to dissociative electron-transfer (DET) theory suggests that the activation occurs only with an excited state of catalyst. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations revealed the structures and stabilities of the radical cation intermediates as well as the reaction energy profiles of deactivation pathways with different photoredox catalysts. Both experiments and calculations suggest that the activation process undergoes a DET mechanism, while an associative electron transfer involving a termolecular encounter (the exact reverse of DET pathway) is favored in the deactivation process. This detailed study provides a deeper understanding of the chemical processes of metal-free ATRP that can aid the design of better catalytic systems. Additionally, this work elucidates several important common pathways involved in synthetically useful organic reactions catalyzed by photoredox catalysts.
A new tetradentate ligand for atom transfer radical polymerization

Abstract:The properties of a ligand, including molecular structure and substituents, strongly affect the catalyst activity and control of the polymerization in atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP). A new tetradentate ligand, N,N'-bis(pyridin-2-yl-methyl-3-hexoxo-3-oxopropyl)ethane-1,2-diamine (BPED) was synthesized and examined as the ligand of copper halide for ATRP of styrene (St), methyl acrylate (MA), and methyl methacrylate (MMA), and compared with other analogous linear tetrdendate ligands. The BPED ligand was found to significantly promote the activation reaction: the CuBr/BPED complex reacted with the initiators so fast that a large amount of Cu(II)Br-2/BPED was produced and thus the polymerizations were slow for all the monomers. The reaction of CuCl/BPED with the initiator was also fast, but by reducing the catalyst concentration or adding CuCl2, the activation reaction could be slowed to establish the equilibrium of ATRP for a well-controlled living polymerization of MA. CuCl/BPED was found very active for the polymerization of MA. For example, 10 mol% of the catalyst relatively to the initiator was sufficient to mediate a living polymerization of MA. The CuCl/BPED, however, could not catalyze a living polymerization of MMA because the resulting CuCl2/BPED could not deactivate the growing radicals. Abstract:J. S. Wang and K. Matyjaszewaki (1995) reported that in addition to a typical atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) initiating system using alkyl halide (R-X) as initiator and transition metal species complexed with suitable ligand (Mt/Lx) as catalyst, R X/Mt/Lx, a 'Living' controlled process is observed using a conventional radical initiator, AIBN, and a transition metal compound at higher oxidation state (e.g. CuCl 2) complexed with a suitable ligand (e.g., 2,2′-bipyridine [BPY]) as catalyst. This initiating system is suitable to the polymerization of styrene, but it requires the high molar ratio of CuCl 2/AIBN (1:10). By means of a new polymerization procedure, the system first reacts at about 65° to 70°C for 10 h, then polymerizes at 130°C. Using the initiating system AIBN/CuCl 2/BPY (1:2:6), the ATRP of styrene was implemented.

Abstract:Atom transfer radical polymerizations (ATRP) of phenoxyallene (POA) and p-tert-butyl phenoxyallene (t-BuPOA) were studied using different initiators and ligands. It was found that the polymerization of POA followed the mechanism of ATRP both in the systems of methyl 2-bromopropanoate/CuBr/4,4'-diheptyl-2,2'-bipyridine (2-MBP/CuBr/dHbpy) and p-toluene sulfonyl chloride/ CuBr/tris-[2-(dimethylamino)ethyl]amine (p-TsCl/CuBr/Me6TREN).

Abstract:Controlled radical polymerization (CRP) is a versatile way to control polymer microscopic structures through establishing a dynamic equilibrium between radical and dormant polymers. Atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP), a typical case of CRP, has the ability to be conducted in mild conditions and produce uniformly distributed polymers. Moreover, the amount of metal addition can be greatly reduced in ATRP processes with the development of photochemical techniques. Photo induced ATRP (photoATRP) has a significant impact on sustainable production in industry. Modeling the microscopic quantities of polymers for photoATRP systems provides insights into the kinetic characteristics. In this work, a Monte Carlo (MC) approach, based on Gillespie’s stochastic simulation algorithm, is developed for the photoATRP processes at microscopic resolution. The length dependency of the individual chains on the radical, dormant, and dead polymer information is captured. The polymerization rate of PhotoATRP is sensitive to light irradiation. The polymerization process model of photoATRP systems based on the MC method for temporal control over polymer growth is established. Kinetic characteristics are studied from the developed model under the condition of light source intermittency. The developed MC model is validated against the deterministic method of moments (MoM) and experimental results.

Abstract:A photoinduced atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) of methacrylate with a Fe-based catalytic system was studied in the absence of additional ligands, reducing agents, and radical initiators. Linear semilogarithmic polymerization kinetics and narrow molecular weight distributions were obtained in the presence but also absence of conventional ATRP initiators. The proposed mechanism involves monomer-mediated photoreduction of Fe(III) to Fe(II) but also photoactivation of Fe(II) species. The polymerization was studied with different radiation sources for several methacrylates. The technique was successfully used to synthesize block copolymers, confirming the living nature of ATRP.

Abstract:A highly active and versatile CuBr2/N,N,N',N-tetra[(2-pyridal)methyl]ethylenediamine (CuBr2/TPEN)-tertiary amine catalyst system has been developed for atom transfer radical polymerization via activator generated by electron-transfer (AGET ATRP). The catalyst mediates good control of the AGET ATRPs of methyl acrylate, methylmethacrylate, and styrene at 1 mol-% catalyst relative to initiator. A mechanism study shows that tertiary amines such as triethylamine reduces the CuBr2/TPEN complex to CuBr/TPEN.

Abstract:Copper-catalyzed atom transfer radical polymerization (Cu-ATRP) is one of the most widely used controlled radical polymerization techniques. Notwithstanding the extensive mechanistic studies in the literature, the transition states of the activation/deactivation of the growing polymer chain, a key equilibrium in Cu-ATRP, have not been investigated computationally. Therefore, the understanding of the origin of ligand and initiator effects on the rates of activation/deactivation is still limited. Here, we present the first computational analysis of Cu-ATRP activation transition states to reveal factors that affect the rates of activation and deactivation. The Br atom transfer between the polymer chain and the Cu catalyst occurs through an unusual bent geometry that involves pronounced interactions between the polymer chain end and the ancillary ligand on the Cu catalyst. Therefore, the rates of activation/deactivation are determined by both the electronic properties of the Cu catalyst and the ligand-initiator steric repulsions. In addition, our calculations revealed the important role of ligand backbone flexibility on the activation. These theoretical analyses led to the identification of three chemically meaningful descriptors, namely HOMO energy of the catalyst (E-HOMO), percent buried volume (V-bur%), and distortion energy of the catalyst (Delta E-dist), to describe the electronic, steric, and flexibility effects on reactivity, respectively. A robust and simple predictive model for ligand effect on reactivity is thereby established by correlating these three descriptors with experimental activation rate constants using multivariate linear regression. Validation using a structurally diverse set of ligands revealed the average error is less than +/- 2 kcal/mol compared to the experimentally derived activation energies. The same approach was also applied to develop a predictive model for reactivity of different alkyl halide initiators using R-X bond dissociation energy (BDE) and Cu-X halogenophilicity as descriptors.

Abstract:Atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) is one of the most widely used methods for modifying surfaces with functional polymer films and has received considerable attention in recent years. Here, we report an electrochemically mediated surface-initiated ATRP to graft polymer brushes onto solid substrates catalyzed by ppm amounts of CuII/TPMA in water/MeOH solution. We systematically investigated the type and concentrations of copper/ligand and applied potentials correlated to the polymerization kinetics and polymer brush thickness. Gradient polymer brushes and various types of polymer brushes are prepared. Block copolymerization of 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate (HEMA) and 3-sulfopropyl methacrylate potassium salt (PSPMA) (poly(HEMA-b-SPMA)) with ultralow ppm eATRP indicates the remarkable preservation of chain end functionality and a pronounced "living" characteristic feature of ppm-level eATRP in aqueous solution for surface polymerization.
9,9-Dimethyl Dihydroacridine-Based Organic Photocatalyst for Atom Transfer Radical Polymerization from Modifying "Unstable" Electron Donor

Abstract:Organic photocatalytic atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) has recently become a research highlight. Organic photocatalysts based on phenothiazine, phenoxazine, and phenazine have been reported and exhibited remarkable performance. All of those structures contain two heteroatoms, which makes the oxidative state (i.e., the radical cation) of the photocatalysts stable enough to complete the catalytic cycle. However, despite the similar structure, 9,9-dimethyl dihydroacridine (DHA) was rarely used for constructing photocatalyst due to its unstable oxidative state. DHA is a weak electron donor that was widely applied in blue-emitting thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) molecules. Its weaker electron-donating ability will contribute to a higher energy level of the excited state. Also, the higher oxidation potential of its radical cation will contribute to better controllability due to fast reversible dormancy. In this study, we found that substitution on the active sites of DHA could make it stable enough to be the donor part of a donor-acceptor (D-A)-type photocatalyst for ATRP. Moreover, chemical modification is necessary for both stabilizing the radical cation and improving the controllability in the polymerization process. Further modification was made to construct a rapid equilibrium between initiation and reversible dormancy, and polymerization with quantitative initiator efficiencies was achieved with a polydispersity of 1.14. It is notable that such modification can probably apply to different kinds of electron donors, and various organic chromophores could thus be applied to construct organic photocatalyst with superior performance.

Abstract:Atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) generally requires a catalyst/initiator molar ratio of 0.1 to 1 and catalyst/monomer molar ratio of 0.001 to 0.01 (i.e., catalyst concentration: 1000-10,000 ppm versus monomer). Herein, we report a new copper-based complex CuBr/N,N,N',N'-tetrakis(2-pyridylmethyl)ethylenediamine (TPEN) as a versatile and highly active catalyst for acrylic, methacrylic, and styrenic monomers. The catalyst mediated ATRP at a catalyst/initiator molar ratio of 0.005 and produced polymers with well-controlled molecular weights and low polydispersities. ATRP occurred even at a catalyst/initiator molar ratio as low as 0.001 with copper concentration in the produced polymers as low as 6-8 ppm (catalyst/monomer molar ratio = 10(-5)). The catalyst structures were studied by X-ray diffraction and NMR spectroscopy. The activator CuIBr/TPEN existed in solution as binuclear and mononuclear complexes in equilibrium but as a binuclear complex in its single crystals. The deactivator CuIIBr2/TPEN complex was mononuclear. High stability and appropriate KATRP (ATRP equilibrium constant) were found crucial for the catalyst working under high dilution or in coordinating solvents/monomers. This provides guidance for further design of highly active ATRP catalysts.

Abstract:PhotoATRP of methyl acrylate with riboflavin (RF) and CuBr2/Me6TREN as a dual catalytic system is successfully carried out under a green LED light. The process demonstrated high chain‐end fidelity, efficient oxygen tolerance, and controlled polymerization kinetics, driven primarily by reductive quenching of RF. It offers a sustainable approach to well‐defined polymers. The photoATRP of methyl acrylate (MA) is investigated using riboflavin (RF) and CuBr2/Me6TREN as a dual catalyst system under green LED irradiation (λ ≈ 525 nm). Both RF and CuBr2/Me6TREN enhanced oxygen tolerance, enabling effective ATRP in the presence of residual oxygen. High molar mass polymers (up to Mn ≈ 129 000 g·mol−1) with low dispersity (Đ ≤ 1.16) are prepared, and chain‐end fidelity is confirmed through successful chain extension. The molecular masses of the obtained polymer increased linearly with conversion and showed high initiation efficiency. Mechanistic studies by laser flash photolysis reveal that the predominant activator generation mechanism is reductive quenching of RF by Me6TREN (83%, under [CuBr2]/[Me6TREN] = 1/3 condition), supported by polymerization kinetics and thermodynamic calculations.

Abstract:Photoinduced atom transfer radical polymerization (photo-ATRP) has emerged as a prominent technique in contemporary polymer chemistry, offering a potent means to create precisely structured materials. Well-defined catalysts are essential for controlling the growth of polymers with reproducible results; however, most photo-ATRP catalytic systems involve mixing the metal salt with the ligand. Herein we present a well-defined iron(III) based photo-ATRP catalyst bearing bidentate NHC ligand, 3-Methyl-1-phenyl-1H-3,1-benzimidazol-3-ium iodide (Pmb). The [FeBr(Pmb) 2 ] was successfully synthesized and fully characterized by FTIR, UV–Vis, and EPR spectroscopic studies, elemental analysis, MALDI-TOF mass spectrometry, and computational studies. [FeBr(Pmb) 2 ] was employed as the catalyst for photo-ATRP of methyl methacrylate (MMA) under ultraviolet light irradiation (365 nm). The catalytic activity of [FeBr(Pmb) 2 ] in the photo-ATRP of MMA was evaluated under different conditions using EBPA as the initiator. The polymerizations showed robust activity, yelding in polymers with controlled molecular weights and a narrow molecular weight distribution (MWD). Remarkably, this was achieved with low catalysts loading (102.6 ppm), mainly at the molar ratio [MMA]/[EBPA]/[Fe] = 200/1/0.04. Well-defined polyMMA was synthesized and temporal control over photo-ATRP was successfully demonstrated through "on/off" experiments. For example, photo-ATRP of MMA with a molar ratio of [200/1/0.04] after 12 h at T = 25 °C in bulk resulted in PMMA with a polydispersity (Ð) of 1.15 at 50 % monomer conversion.

Abstract:Photoinduced atom transfer radical polymerization (photo-ATRP) has risen to the forefront of modern polymer chemistry as a powerful tool giving access to well-defined materials with complex architecture. However, most photo-ATRP systems can only generate radicals under biocidal UV light and are oxygen-sensitive, hindering their practical use in the synthesis of polymer biohybrids. Herein, inspired by the photoinduced electron transfer-reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer (PET-RAFT) polymerization, we demonstrate a dual photoredox/copper catalysis that allows open-air ATRP under green light irradiation. Eosin Y was used as an organic photoredox catalyst (PC) in combination with a copper complex (X–Cu II /L). The role of PC was to trigger and drive the polymerization, while X–Cu II /L acted as a deactivator, providing a well-controlled polymerization. Excited PC was oxidatively quenched by X-Cu II /L, generating Cu I /L activator and PC •+ . The ATRP ligand used in excess then reduced the PC •+ , closing the photocatalytic cycle. The continuous reduction of Cu II /L back to CuI/L by excited PC provided high oxygen tolerance. As a result, a well-controlled and rapid ATRP could proceed even in an open vessel despite continuous oxygen diffusion. This method allowed the synthesis of polymers with narrow molecular weight distributions and controlled molecular weights using Cu catalyst and PC at ppm levels in both aqueous and organic media. A detailed comparison of photo-ATRP with PET-RAFT polymerization revealed the superiority of dual photoredox/copper catalysis under biologically relevant conditions. The kinetic studies and fluorescence measurements indicated that in the absence of the CuII/L complex, green light irradiation caused faster photobleaching of eosin Y, leading to inhibition of PET-RAFT polymerization. Importantly, PET-RAFT polymerizations showed significantly higher dispersity values (1.14 ≤ Đ ≤ 4.01) in contrast to photo-ATRP (1.15 ≤ Đ ≤ 1.22) under identical conditions.

Abstract:We report an ab initio emulsion atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) based on micellar nucleation. A surfactantligand (SL) was designed and synthesized for this purpose. The SL design was an amphiphilic macromolecule, and it acted as the surfactant for micelle formation and as the ligand for ATRP catalyst. The micelles were converted into to polymer particles with both water-soluble and oil-soluble initiators. The micellar nucleation mechanism was confirmed by the growth of polymer particles during polymerization, in comparison to a control experiment without SL addition. It was also found that diffusion-controlled deactivation inside particles occurred, which broadened the polymer molecular weight distribution. Adding a small amount of free catalyst significantly improved the molecular weight control. The polymers resulting from the ab initio emulsion ATRP were proven living by chain extension experiments.
