Abstract:We report an ab initio emulsion atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) based on micellar nucleation. A surfactantligand (SL) was designed and synthesized for this purpose. The SL design was an amphiphilic macromolecule, and it acted as the surfactant for micelle formation and as the ligand for ATRP catalyst. The micelles were converted into to polymer particles with both water-soluble and oil-soluble initiators. The micellar nucleation mechanism was confirmed by the growth of polymer particles during polymerization, in comparison to a control experiment without SL addition. It was also found that diffusion-controlled deactivation inside particles occurred, which broadened the polymer molecular weight distribution. Adding a small amount of free catalyst significantly improved the molecular weight control. The polymers resulting from the ab initio emulsion ATRP were proven living by chain extension experiments.

Abstract:This work reports a kinetic model for the activator-regenerated-by-electron-transfer atom-transfer radical polymerization (ARGET ATRP) and its verification by the experimental data of solution ARGET ATRP of styrene, methyl methacrylate, and butyl arylate from literatures. The effects of ATRP equilibrium constant K and apparent reducing rate coefficient k(r) on the ARGET ATRP kinetics are investigated. A highly active initiation/catalyst system with a large K results in a poor control of the polymerization while an increased k(r) promotes the polymerization rate but the formation of dead polymer chains. Reducing agent with a moderate k(r) gives good control over ARGET ATRP. It is not feasible to use a moderate catalyst system for the ARGET ATRP of highly active monomers.

Abstract:Copper-catalyzed atom transfer radical polymerization (Cu-ATRP) is one of the most widely used controlled radical polymerization techniques. Notwithstanding the extensive mechanistic studies in the literature, the transition states of the activation/deactivation of the growing polymer chain, a key equilibrium in Cu-ATRP, have not been investigated computationally. Therefore, the understanding of the origin of ligand and initiator effects on the rates of activation/deactivation is still limited. Here, we present the first computational analysis of Cu-ATRP activation transition states to reveal factors that affect the rates of activation and deactivation. The Br atom transfer between the polymer chain and the Cu catalyst occurs through an unusual bent geometry that involves pronounced interactions between the polymer chain end and the ancillary ligand on the Cu catalyst. Therefore, the rates of activation/deactivation are determined by both the electronic properties of the Cu catalyst and the ligand-initiator steric repulsions. In addition, our calculations revealed the important role of ligand backbone flexibility on the activation. These theoretical analyses led to the identification of three chemically meaningful descriptors, namely HOMO energy of the catalyst (E-HOMO), percent buried volume (V-bur%), and distortion energy of the catalyst (Delta E-dist), to describe the electronic, steric, and flexibility effects on reactivity, respectively. A robust and simple predictive model for ligand effect on reactivity is thereby established by correlating these three descriptors with experimental activation rate constants using multivariate linear regression. Validation using a structurally diverse set of ligands revealed the average error is less than +/- 2 kcal/mol compared to the experimentally derived activation energies. The same approach was also applied to develop a predictive model for reactivity of different alkyl halide initiators using R-X bond dissociation energy (BDE) and Cu-X halogenophilicity as descriptors.

Abstract:Atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) is one of the most robust tools to prepare well-defined polymers with precise topologies and architectures. Although series of improved ATRP methods have been developed to decrease the metal catalyst loading to parts per million, metal residue is the key limiting factor for variety of applications, especially in microelectronic and biomedical area. The feasible solution to this challenge would be the establishment of metal-free ATRP. Since 2014, organocatalyzed ATRP (O-ATRP) or metal free ATRP has achieved significant progress by developing kinds of organic photoredox catalysts. This review highlights the advances in organocatalyzed atom transfer radical polymerization as well as the potential future directions.

Abstract:Since atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) was developed, various strategies have been adopted to design well-controlled ATRP procedures. However, there is no single criterion that could be used for various ATRP reaction conditions (e.g., different monomers, different targeted degrees of polymerization, conversions, etc.). In this work, we introduce a new factor Active Kinetic Chain Length (AKCL) as a parameter that can guide the design of well-controlled ATRPs. Under a certain reaction system with a specific monomer type (kp), monomer concentration ([M]0), and targeted degrees of polymerization, the smaller value of AKCL, i.e., a smaller initial number of monomer units added to a growing chain during a chain active period, can decrease polymer dispersity and also diminish the radical termination. The effects of AKCL were compared with other parameters affecting dispersity and livingness in ATRPs, which clearly demonstrates the design principle of AKCL. The model examples of deactivation-enhanced ATRP (DE-ATRP) have further shown the effectiveness of this criterion.

Abstract:Atom-transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) is a powerful and versatile technique for the synthesis of welldefined polymers with precise control over the molecular weight and architecture. Photoinduced ATRP (photoATRP) is a variant of ATRP based on the transfer of radical polymers through a photochemical process, offering numerous benefits over traditional ATRP, including reduced environmental impact and improved polymer yields. Monte Carlo (MC) simulation is an attractive tool for simulating photoATRP, enabling one to predict microscopic properties of the polymers. In this work, a dynamic Monte Carlo (DMC) model is developed for the photoATRP processes at microscopic resolution. The dependency information of individual chains' length on the radical, dormant, and dead polymers is captured. Furthermore, the polymerization process simulation of photoATRP systems based on the developed DMC method for temporal control over polymer growth is established. Several facets on the enhancement of temporal control are investigated under the condition of light intermittency.

Abstract:A kinetic model has been developed using the method of moment for surface-initiated atom transfer radical polymerization (s-ATRP) from flat solid surfaces based on a moving boundary physical model. The model is verified with the experimental data of 2-methacryloyloxyethyl phosphorylcholine from silicon wafer, which were carried out by either adding free initiator (Method I) or excess deactivator (Method II) to the solution. It is shown through the modeling that Method II gives better control over polymer molecular weight and thicker graft layer under similar conditions than Method I. A new mechanism is proposed for the radical termination based on the fact that the rapid activation/deactivation cycle reactions facilitate "migration" of radical centers on the surface. The rate constant of "migration termination" is thus catalyst concentration dependent with higher catalyst concentration resulting in higher termination. Lowering catalyst concentration suppressed migration termination that could improve the control and livingness of s-ATRP. However, there exists a catalyst concentration for the optimal control performance.

Abstract:J. S. Wang and K. Matyjaszewaki (1995) reported that in addition to a typical atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) initiating system using alkyl halide (R-X) as initiator and transition metal species complexed with suitable ligand (Mt/Lx) as catalyst, R X/Mt/Lx, a 'Living' controlled process is observed using a conventional radical initiator, AIBN, and a transition metal compound at higher oxidation state (e.g. CuCl 2) complexed with a suitable ligand (e.g., 2,2′-bipyridine [BPY]) as catalyst. This initiating system is suitable to the polymerization of styrene, but it requires the high molar ratio of CuCl 2/AIBN (1:10). By means of a new polymerization procedure, the system first reacts at about 65° to 70°C for 10 h, then polymerizes at 130°C. Using the initiating system AIBN/CuCl 2/BPY (1:2:6), the ATRP of styrene was implemented.

Abstract:Photoinduced metal-free atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) of methyl methacrylate was investigated using several phenothiazine derivatives and other related compounds as photoredox catalysts. The experiments show that all selected catalysts can be involved in the activation step, but not all of them participated efficiently in the deactivation step. The redox properties and the stability of radical cations derived from the catalysts were evaluated by cyclic voltammetry. Laser flash photolysis (LFP) was used to determine the lifetime and activity of photoexcited catalysts. Kinetic analysis of the activation reaction according to dissociative electron-transfer (DET) theory suggests that the activation occurs only with an excited state of catalyst. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations revealed the structures and stabilities of the radical cation intermediates as well as the reaction energy profiles of deactivation pathways with different photoredox catalysts. Both experiments and calculations suggest that the activation process undergoes a DET mechanism, while an associative electron transfer involving a termolecular encounter (the exact reverse of DET pathway) is favored in the deactivation process. This detailed study provides a deeper understanding of the chemical processes of metal-free ATRP that can aid the design of better catalytic systems. Additionally, this work elucidates several important common pathways involved in synthetically useful organic reactions catalyzed by photoredox catalysts.
New Initiation Systems For Atom Transfer Radical Polymerization

Abstract:This review summarizes our achievements in designing new initiation systems for atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP). First-order kinetics and extension experiments revealed the living nature of these reactions. Tailor-made vinyl polymers with functional end groups were characterized by H-1-NMR and UV-vis spectroscopic analyses. Replacing traditional radical initiators AIBN and BPO, carbon-carbon bond compounds, 1,1,2,2-tetraphenyl-1,2-ethanediol, diethyl 2,3-dicyano-2,3-diphenylsuccinate and diethyl 2,3-dicyano-2,3-di(p-tolyl)succinate, were utilized in reverse ATRP to produce the initiating radical. Sulfur-sulfur bond iniferter, tetraethylthiuram disulfide (TD), in conjunction with CuBr/bpy or NiCl2/PPh3 Complex could control the styrene polymerization via redox reaction. Pseudo-halogen transfer reaction was demonstrated to maintain the dormant-active species equilibrium in normal and reverse ATRP with Cu(S2CNEt2), Cu(S2CNEt2)Cl and Fe(S2CNEt2)(3) as catalysts. The organic halide initiator and reduced transition metal compound that started the living polymerization were produced in situ from the components of TD/FeCl3/PPh3, TD/CuBr2/bpy and Fe(S2CNEt2)(3)/FeCl3/PPh3 systems. Accurate control of UV irradiation time favored the radical generation process in photo ATRP with the 2,2-dimethoxy-2-phenylacetophenone/Fe(S2CNEt2)(3) initiation system.

Abstract:Controlled radical polymerization (CRP) is a versatile way to control polymer microscopic structures through establishing a dynamic equilibrium between radical and dormant polymers. Atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP), a typical case of CRP, has the ability to be conducted in mild conditions and produce uniformly distributed polymers. Moreover, the amount of metal addition can be greatly reduced in ATRP processes with the development of photochemical techniques. Photo induced ATRP (photoATRP) has a significant impact on sustainable production in industry. Modeling the microscopic quantities of polymers for photoATRP systems provides insights into the kinetic characteristics. In this work, a Monte Carlo (MC) approach, based on Gillespie’s stochastic simulation algorithm, is developed for the photoATRP processes at microscopic resolution. The length dependency of the individual chains on the radical, dormant, and dead polymer information is captured. The polymerization rate of PhotoATRP is sensitive to light irradiation. The polymerization process model of photoATRP systems based on the MC method for temporal control over polymer growth is established. Kinetic characteristics are studied from the developed model under the condition of light source intermittency. The developed MC model is validated against the deterministic method of moments (MoM) and experimental results.

Abstract:Polymerizations in aqueous dispersed media benefit from good heat transfer, low viscosity, low content of volatile compounds, and established industrial use. Over the past two decades, the implementation of ATRP in dispersed media highlighted the possibility of achieving improved livingness and producing a variety of macromolecular architectures. With the introduction of several methods for activator regeneration in ATRP, catalyst loading has been greatly diminished, and the reaction setup has been simplified. The availability of ATRP techniques employing low-ppm (part per million) catalyst loadings enabled to access an even larger variety of polymer architectures and functional polymer particles, which have been applied for molecular recognition, drug delivery, bio-quantification, and advanced coatings. This minireview presents innovative synthetic approaches, polymer architectures, and relevant applications, as well as the challenges that remain to be overcome to promote the industrialization of ATRP in dispersed media.

Abstract:Full Paper: A new multidentate amine ligand, 1,3,5-tris[(3-dimethylamino)propyl]-hexahydro-1,3,5-triazine (T-triazine) was developed for the atom transfer radical polymerization of methacrylates (dimethylaminoethyl methacrylate (DMAEMA) and methyl methacrylate (MMA)). It was found that with T-triazine as ligand, CuBr mediated a living polymerization of DMAEMA and MMA, producing polymers with controlled molecular weight and narrow polydispersity. The DMAEMA bulk polymerization and MMA solution polymerization in THF and gamma-butyrolactone (gamma BL) followed first order kinetics with respect to the monomer. At lower temperature, both polymerizations had an induction period and the induction time decreased with increasing temperature. The measured apparent active energy was 67.8 kJ/mol for DMAEMA polymerization. The NMR spectra confirmed that the polymerizations proceeded via an atom transfer radical process.

Abstract:A synergetic copper/photoredox catalyzed ATRA of styrenes and thiosulfonates is developed. Besides aryl ethylenes, the challenging α-substituted styrenes were employed to construct the benzylic quaternary carbon centers. Owing to the mild conditions as well as the high level of substrate compability, this ATRA could be applied to derivatize bioactive natural products in late stage, and to install fluorophores across alkenes. The mechanistic studies reveal sulfonyl radicals as the key intermediate in the transformation.

Abstract:Approaching 25 years since its invention, atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) is established as a powerful technique to prepare precisely defined polymeric materials. This perspective focuses on the relation between structure and activity of ATRP catalysts, and the consequent choice of the initiating system, which are paramount aspects to well-controlled polymerizations. The ATRP mechanism is discussed, including the effect of kinetic and thermodynamic parameters and side reactions affecting the catalyst. The coordination chemistry and activity of copper complexes used in ATRP are reviewed in chronological order, while emphasizing the structure-activity correlation. ATRP-initiating systems are described, from normal ATRP to low ppm Cu systems. Most recent advancements regarding dispersed media and oxygen-tolerant techniques are presented, as well as future opportunities that arise from progressively more active catalysts and deeper mechanistic understanding.

Abstract:Mechanically mediated atom transfer radical polymerization (mechanoATRP) utilizing ultrasound to generate activators and improve the diffusivity of macromolecular chains is introduced as an innovative externally controlled ATRP. Herein, a comprehensive kinetic model with free volume theory based "series" encounter pair model accounting for diffusional limitations on termination, activation, and deactivation is developed for the mechanoATRP of methyl acrylate. Comparative study by using different diffusion models, for example, wp model and reduced composite kt model, as well as constant apparent kjapp model confirms the goodness of the as‐developed model. Critically, mechanochemically induced reduction rate coefficient kr,s as a key kinetic parameter is associated with experimental conditions excluding the sonication effect by a fitting equation for the first time. In silico tracking of polymer dispersity with the help of kinetic model shows a better result compared with that by the classical dispersity equation. By defining an ultrasonic factor γj, a qualitative analysis for the effect of ultrasound conditions on the diffusional limitation in mechanoATRP is presented.This article is protected by copyright. Abstract:Iron-based catalysts for atom-transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) are attractive in the sustainability aspects of green polymer chemistry but usually exhibit lower efficiency and controllability over the polymerization, as well as poorer tolerance to polar groups, compared to copper catalysts. Herein, β-ketamine/iron complexes, combining a strategy employing in situ generated iodine as a regulator, have been developed for improving the efficiency and robustness of iron-catalyzed ATRP. The catalyst system realizes low catalyst loading, ultrahigh molecular weight, robustness over polar groups, efficient polymerization of acrylate, and forthrightly synthesizing block copolymers, which are challengeable for common iron catalysts. Abstract:Atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) with dual photoredox/copper catalysis combines the advantages of photo-ATRP and photoredox-mediated ATRP, utilizing visible light and ensuring broad monomer scope and solvent compatibility while minimizing side reactions. Despite its popularity, challenges include high photocatalyst (PC) loadings (10 to 1000 ppm), requiring additional purification and increasing costs. In this study, we discover a PC that functions at the sub-ppm level for ATRP through mechanism-driven PC design. Through studying polymerization mechanisms, we find that the efficient polymerizations are driven by PCs whose ground state oxidation potential—responsible for PC regeneration—play a more important role than their excited state reducing power, responsible for initiation. This is verified by screening PCs with varying redox potentials and triplet excited state generation capabilities. Based on these findings, we identify a highly efficient PC, 4DCDP-IPN, featuring moderate excited state reducing power and a maximized ground state oxidation potential. Employing this PC at 50 ppb, we synthesize poly(methyl methacrylate) with high conversion, narrow molecular weight distribution, and high chain-end fidelity. This system exhibits oxygen tolerance and supports large-scale reactions under ambient conditions. Our findings, driven by the systematic PC design, offer meaningful insights for controlled radical polymerizations and metallaphotoredox-mediated syntheses beyond ATRP.

Herein, a multi-scale modeling strategy combining quantum chemical calculation and kinetic modeling was developed for sonochemically induced electron transfer controlled atom transfer radical polymerization (SET-ATRP) to study the complicated SET process and its effects on polymerization. At the molecular scale, density functional theory (DFT) calculations were used to acquire the electron characteristic and structure–reactivity of the reactants, intermediates and products during SET process, which provides guideline to figure out the underlying mechanism. Results showed that DMSO •• generated under ultrasonication could react with free Me 6 TREN to induce electron transfer for the reduction of Cu II Br/L + to produce Cu I /L + , which is the key step for a successful polymerization. The corresponding elementary reaction rate coefficients were calculated by thermodynamic formulae combining transition state theory and Marcus theory. At the micro-scale, kinetic modeling based on method of moment was established to account for the role of SET process in regulating polymerization. Good agreements between the simulation results and experimental data confirmed the reliability of the as-developed multi-scale modeling strategy. More Me 6 TREN and Cu II Br/L + resulted in more electron transfer and faster polymerization rate. This work provides an in-depth mechanism insights and kinetic understanding for SET-ATRP, which has a promising potential to promote its progress of application.
