Abstract:Developing polymers with switchable glass transition temperature (Tg) can solve scientific challenges such as fracture healing of polymers with high Tg and processing of hard polymers without plasticizer at room temperature. The azobenzene-containing polymers, or the so-called azopolymers, are smart materials that show photoswitchable Tg and photoinduced motions, which can be used in fabrication of photoactuators. Here, healable and reprocessable models were constructed by using linear azopolymers. Molecular dynamics (MD) simulation was used to study the behaviors of photo-induced bending, self-healing, and directional photofluidization of the azopolymers. A temporary modification of the C–N=N–C dihedral potential was applied to achieve the isomerization of azopolymer by using polymer consistent force-field (PCFF). The simulation results show that isomerization of azobenzene groups can lead to photoswitchable Tg of the azopolymers, which resulting in shape changes and different mechanical responses. Furthermore, the photoswitchable Tg makes the azopolymers much easier to heal under UV irradiation, and restore the mechanical properties under visible light irradiation. Finally, the mechanism of photoliquefaction was investigated, our results imply that the photoinduced trans–cis-trans cycles can reduce the mechanical properties and Tg values of azopolymers.

Abstract:This study aims to test and validate the modern orientation approach of Saphiannikova & co. within the context of viscoplastic photoalignment (VPA) modeling. We focus on the formation of topographical structures under interference patterns featuring spatially varying elliptical polarization. By comparing our VPA modeling results with the asymmetric height profiles reported by Pagliusi & co. we observe a pronounced coupling effect between elliptically polarized light and the anisotropic orientation of azo-chromophores induced by this light. Our findings suggest that the photoinduced birefringent layer deviates the azimuth of elliptically polarized light, which in turn rotates the main axis of anisotropic orientation in a chirally propagating structure. This self-induced rotation of light polarization influences the spatial dependence of interference profiles as a function of depth within the film. This research not only reinforces the importance of polymer backbone reorientation in azopolymer films but also enhances the predictive capabilities of VPA modeling in designing complex, light-driven topographical structures.

Abstract:The photoinduced 3D orientational structures in the films of liquid crystalline polyester, containing azobenzene side groups, are studied both experimentally and theoretically. By using the null ellipsometry and the UV absorption methods, preferential in-plane alignment of the azobenzene fragments and in-plane reorientation under irradiation with polarized UV light are established. The uniaxial and biaxial orientational configurations of the azobenzene chromophores are detected. The biaxiality is observed in the intermediate stages of irradiation, whereas the uniaxial structure is maintained in the photosaturated state. The components of the order parameter tensor of the azobenzene fragments are estimated for the initial state and after different doses of irradiation. The proposed theory takes into account biaxiality of the induced structures. Numerical analysis of the master equations for the order parameter tensor is found to yield the results that are in good agreement with the experimental dependencies of the order parameter components on the illumination time.

Abstract:Molecular orientations of the crystalline and the amorphous phases are studied in relation to morphology using all instrument constructed for simultaneous kinetic measurement of microscopic infrared (MicIR) dichroism from a predetermined sampling area and macroscopic stress of isotactic polypropylene (W) thin film uniaxially stretched at a constant strain rate at room temperature. The morphology imposes important influences oil profiles of MicIR dichroism as a function of stretching, time and also on a relationship between the orientation functions, f(c) and f(am), of the crystalline and the amorphous phases. Linear relationships between f(c) and f(am) are found for the local areas without giant spherulite inclusions when f(am) <0.3 similar to 0.4, suggesting the harmonious developments of amorphous chain deformation and lamellar ant orientation during the necking propagation. The proportionality constant between and f(c) and f(am) is not universal but is strongly dependent on the morphology of the surrounding area where the local area under examination is located. The linear relationship between f(c) and f(am) is completely invalidated for describing the relationship between the amorphous chain deformation and the lamellar orientation inside the spherulites, which reveals that the deformation mechanism in the spherulite is different from that in the microcrystalline region.
Photoinduced Birefringence and Liquid Crystal Orientation on Polymers with Different Azobenzene Content in the Main Chain

Abstract:In this paper, we give an overview of novel main-chain azobenzene-based fluorinated poly(arylene ether)s with different content of azo groups, aiming at providing a better understanding of the link between a number of N═N bonds and the macroscopic response of the material. We discuss chemical synthesis and molecular structure and report on a comprehensive analysis of the polymer properties, thermal behavior, and mechanical strength. We show that a higher content of azobenzene moieties reduces the mechanical strength of the polymer materials. On the other hand, polymers with a higher content of azobenzene demonstrate higher values of induced birefringence due to a larger number of azobenzene in the trans form. The photoisomerization constants of all polymers fall within a very close range. The minor variations are attributed to the number of azobenzene groups in the polymer composition and the conformational arrangements of the polymer chain packing. The developed light-sensitive polymers were employed for dynamic control and manipulation of the liquid crystal orientation by polarization of the incident light. After the double irradiation of the substrates using appropriate photomasks, we made patterned cells that consist of domains with different high-resolution liquid crystal director orientations.

Abstract:Photo-induced isomerization of azobenzene molecules drives mass migrations in azopolymer samples. The resulting macroscopic directional photo-deformation of the material morphology has found many applications in literature, although the fundamental mechanisms behind this mass transfer are still under debate. Hence, it is of paramount importance to find quantitative observables that could drive the community toward a better understanding of this phenomenon. In this regard, azopolymer mechanical properties have been intensively studied, but the lack of a nanoscale technique capable of quantitative viscoelastic measurements has delayed the progress in the field. Here, we use bimodal atomic force microscopy (AFM) as a powerful technique for nanomechanical characterizations of azopolymers. With this multifrequency AFM approach, we map the azopolymer local elasticity and viscosity, with high resolution, after irradiation. We find that, while in the (previously) illuminated region, a general photo-softening is measured; locally, the Young modulus and the viscosity depend upon the inner structuring of the illuminating light spot. We then propose a possible interpretation based on a light-induced expansion plus a local alignment of the polymer chains (directional hole-burning effect), which explains the experimental observations. The possibility to access, in a reliable and quantitative way, both Young modulus and viscosity could trigger new theoretical–numerical investigations on the azopolymer mass migration dynamics since, as we show, both parameters can be considered measurable. Furthermore, our results provide a route for engineering the nanomechanical properties of azopolymers, which could find interesting applications in cell mechanobiology research.

Morphology Control of Perpendicularly Oriented Lamellar Films from Azobenzene-Containing Block Copolymers with Different Spacer Lengths

Abstract:Block copolymer (BCP) films with vertically aligned lamellar structures hold great application potential in multiple fields. Nevertheless, systematic control of the lamellar morphology in BCP films has rarely been reported so far, including connectivity, etch selectivity, and orientation. Here, we report an effective approach to construct perpendicularly oriented lamellar domains by incorporating the azobenzene groups into the side chains of polystyrene-block-polymethacrylate (PS-b-PMMA) with different flexible spacers (x), namely, PS-b-PMA(xC)Az (x = 0, 6, or 11). Two-and three-dimensional vertical lamellae, such as thick high-connectivity lamellae, thin defect-free lamellae, and mixture lamellae, can be fabricated by manipulating x. Simultaneously, the perpendicular lamellae with different morphologies can be obtained on various substrates, such as hard silicon wafers, flexible aluminum sheets, and transparent polyethylene terephthalate (PET) films. Herein, a plausible mechanism is demonstrated. The present strategy might open an avenue to engineer the morphology of perpendicularly aligned lamellar films for applications that either require high-connectivity percolating transport or defect-free lithography templates.
Photoinduced anisotropy in thin films of azobenzene‐containing liquid crystalline supramolecular complexes of various polymer architecture

Abstract:Light patternable colorless liquid crystalline (LC) polymers are promising materials for functional photonic devices with broad applications in optical communication, diffractive optics, and displays. This work reports photoinduced optical anisotropy in thin films of azobenzene‐containing (Azo) LC block copolymer supramolecular complexes, which can be decolorized after light patterning providing colorless patterned birefringent polymer films. The supramolecular complexes are prepared via intermolecular pyridine–phenol hydrogen bonding between a low‐molecular‐weight Azo phenol and host LC AB diblock and ABA triblock copolymers consisted of LC phenylbenzoate (PhM) blocks and poly(vinylpyridine) units. The molecular architecture of the host polymers and the morphological pattern formed by the complexes can affect orientational behavior of Azo groups under irradiation with linearly polarized light. Photoorientation of hydrogen‐bonded Azo groups is accompanied by the cooperative orientation of non‐photochromic PhM units, which form individual microphases and stabilize the orientation of Azo groups. This effect is specific for block copolymer complexes and it is absent for random copolymer complex, which is used as a reference sample. Optical anisotropy induced in films of the block copolymer complexes can be amplified by heating above the glass transition temperature and subsequent rinsing with diethyl ether allows colorless birefringent polymer films to be prepared.

Abstract:Ubiquitous surface wrinkling has been well studied theoretically and experimentally. How to modulate the stress state of a liquid-supported system for the unexploited wrinkling capabilities remains a challenge. Here we report a simple linearly-polarized-light illumination to spatiotemporally trigger ultrasensitive in-situ dynamic wrinkling on a floating azo-film. The smart combination of the liquid substrate with photoresponsive azo-moieties leads to the light-induced ultrafast wrinkling evolution, accompanied by unprecedented sequential wrinkling orientation conversion (from polarization-parallel to polarization-perpendicular). The involved different polarization-dependent sequential photo-orientation for azo side chains and azo-grafted main chains of azopolymers is disclosed experimentally for the first time. Meanwhile, programmable dynamic wrinkling with all-optical switchable surface topographies is available, which has wide application potentials in photoresponsive soft photonics.

Abstract:Azobenzene-containing polymers (azopolymers) can serve as building blocks for an emerging class of soft photonics. Using their photoresponses for the micro/nanofabrication of smart surface is a key but still a challenging step. Here, we report a simple visible-light-illumination strategy to trigger diverse configurations of surface wrinkling on azopolymer-based film/substrate systems, which can be switched between flat and wrinkled states by controlling the intensity of the incident light. Different photoresponsive characteristics of azobenzene are involved in driving the wrinkling/dewrinkling switch. For the first time, we achieve the controlled wrinkling with an unexpected high aspect ratio and surprisingly polarization-independent ordered orientation by exploiting the unique photosoftening effect of azobenzene. Theoretical analysis reveals that an in situ photoinduced reversible soft/hard-contrast boundary determines the wrinkling orientation, which is used to fabricate diverse on-demand hierarchical wrinkles. These photoresponsive systems find broad photonic applications that are not easily accessible to other systems, e.g., optically reversible smart display, information security, and well-regulated optical devices.

Abstract:Polymer films have broad applications in different industries with specific requirements for their optical and mechanical properties. In mass production, processing conditions during film formation that apply forces and motions in various directions to the film tend to manifest preferred molecular chain orientation in the film microstructure, which unavoidably produces optical and mechanical anisotropies. In this paper, we investigate the effect of such macromolecular orientations on the optical and mechanical anisotropies of several polymer films, including polystyrene, poly(methyl methacrylate), poly(ethylene terephthalate), poly(ethylene naphthalate), poly(ether ether ketone), poly(ether sulfones), poly(ethylene chlorotrifluoroethylene), poly(phenylsulfone), and polycarbonate, at temperatures well below their respective glass transitions (Tg). The film mechanical responses, including elasticity, yielding, and post-yield behaviors, were obtained for the in- and out-of-plane directions utilizing tensile and nanoindentation testing methods, respectively. In addition, the net chain orientation within the films was evaluated by birefringence through analyzing the film optical refractive indices, which were verified and complemented by wide-angle X-ray scattering (WAXS) measurements. The results reveal a considerable quantitative correlation between the birefringence and the degree of elastic anisotropy and a qualitative correlation between the chain orientation and the film post-yield tensile instability (necking). These observations corroborate the interrelationship between the microstructure of polymer films and their optical and mechanical properties. In addition, they emphasize that process conditions can be selected to tune the optical and mechanical anisotropies to best serve the material performance in specific devices. We also propose an empirical equation to approximate the out-of-plane film stiffness based upon the optical and in-plane mechanical properties.

Abstract:Surface morphing of organic materials is necessary for advances in semiconductor processing, optical gratings, anticounterfeiting etc., but it is still challenging, especially for its fundamental explanation and further applications like advanced anticounterfeiting. Here, we report one strategy to acquire surface deformation of the liquid-crystalline azopolymer film using a two-step method: selective photoisomerization of azopolymers and then solvent development. In the first step, surface tension of the polymer film can be patterned by the selective photoisomerization of azopolymers, and then in the second step, the flowing solvent drags the underlying polymer to transport, leading to the formation of surface deformation. Interestingly, the direction of mass transport is opposite to the traditional Marangoni flow, and the principle of solvents' choice is the matching of surface tensions between the azopolymer and the solvent. The two-step method shows characteristics of efficient surface morphing, which could be applied in advanced anticounterfeiting by the way of photomask-assistant information writing or microscale direct writing, and then reading in a specific liquid environment. This paves a new way for understanding the mechanism of mass transport toward numerous unprecedented applications using various photoresponsive materials.
Photoinduced Orientation and Cooperative Motion of Three Epoxy-Based Azo Polymers

Abstract:In this work, photoinduced orientation of three epoxy-based polymers bearing different type azo chromophores was studied. The epoxy-based azo polymers were synthesized through post-polymerization azo-coupling reactions based on an epoxy-based precursor polymer (BP-AN), which was synthesized by the step polymerization between bisphenol-A diglycidyl ether and aniline. The chromophore orientation and cooperative motion of the main-chain groups were studied by birefringence characterization, polarized infrared spectroscopy, and two-dimensional (2D)-IR correlation spectroscopy (COS). The results show that the orientation behavior of the epoxy-based azo polymers is closely related with the electron-withdrawing groups on the azo chromophores. The azo polymer BP-AZ-CN, which contains azo chromophores with cyano as the electron-withdrawing group, shows the fastest birefringence growth rate. The azo polymer BP-AZ-CA, containing carboxyl as the electron-withdrawing group, possesses high birefringence residual value and the highest saturated orientation degree in the series. Cooperative motion between azobenzene moieties and non-photochromic polymer backbone was revealed by polarized FTIR and 2D-IR COS. The photoinduced anisotropy is a result of the orientation of both azo chromophore and polymer main-chain. The understanding of the structure–property relationships can be used to develop materials with better performance for data storage and other applications.
Synthesis, characterization, and study of photoinduced optical anisotropy in polyimides containing side azobenzene units

Abstract:In this paper, novel processable aromatic polymers with imide rings and attached as side-chain azobenzene units are presented. Polymers differ in the chemical structures of chromophores and polymer backbones. Azopolymers were obtained by a two-step synthetic approach. This includes the preparation of a precursor poly(esterimide) and poly(etherimide) with pendant phenolic hydroxyl groups, followed by the covalent bonding of NLO chromophores onto the polyimide backbone by the Mitsunobu reaction. The degree of functionalization of polymers was estimated by UV-vis spectroscopy. Polymers were characterized and evaluated by FT-IR, (1)H NMR, X-ray, UV-vis, DSC, and TGA methods. The synthesized polymers exhibited glass transition temperatures in the range of 167-228 degrees C, thermal stability with decomposition temperatures in the range of 275-446 degrees C, and excellent solubilities in common organic solvents. The light-induced optical anisotropy was studied in obtained azopolymers with the help of a holographic grating recording technique. Two polarization geometries were applied for the grating inscription s-s and p-p. The influence of the polarization geometry on the diffraction efficiency dynamics and on the depth of the surface modulation was not observed, which is different from results reported in the literature. Surface relief gratings, which appeared after the light exposure, were observed by atomic force microscopy. Additionally, the optical anisotropy in poly(esterimide)s was investigated by photoinduced birefringence measurements. For the first time, in polyimide with covalently bonded azobenzene derivatives, the high photoinduced birefringence (Delta n = 0.01) was measured.

Abstract:The development of physically cross-linked photodeformable main-chain azobenzene poly(ester-amide)s with enhanced performances via chemical structure engineering and obtention of their detailed structure–property relationship are first described. The synthesis of a series of photodeformable main-chain azobenzene (azo) poly(ester-amide)s (PEAs) with different flexible spacer lengths, molecular weights, and amide unit location via Michael addition polymerization and study of the correlation between their chemical structures and performances are first described. These PEAs showed low crystallinity degrees and glass transition temperatures, high thermal stability, reversible photoresponsivity, and amide unit-induced hydrogen bonding interactions. Their chemical structures exhibited a large influence on their film-forming capability as well as mechanical and photomechanical properties. Physically cross-linked uniaxially oriented fibers and films with high mechanical strength and reversible room-temperature photoinduced bending/unbending behaviors were fabricated from high-molecular-weight PEAs with a flexible spacer (–(CH 2 ) n –) between the amide unit and azo mesogen (PEA- n ), whereas their low-molecular-weight counterpart and PEA with the amide unit directly connected to the azo mesogen (PEA-2b) only formed brittle fibers/films. The mechanical strength of PEA- n fibers/films increased with the increase in the molecular weights and flexible spacer length, whereas optimal photomechanical effects were observed for PEA- n samples with a moderate molecular weight and a shorter flexible spacer ( n = 2). The photomobile rates and amplitudes of PEA fibers/films can be well correlated with their elastic moduli and photoinduced stress. In addition, the decisive role of the aggregation states of PEA samples in their mechanical strength as well as those of both the amide unit-induced physical cross-linking and alignment structure in their photomobility was also demonstrated. This work not only presents photodeformable main-chain azo PEAs with enhanced performances via chemical structure engineering, but also lays the foundation for rationally designing more advanced physically cross-linked photomobile main-chain azo polymers.

Abstract:Several kinds of photodeformable polymer systems containing azobenzenes, capable of generating photomechanical effects, are reviewed. In polymer amorphous systems including monolayers, gels and solid films, trans-cis photoisomerization of the azobenzene moieties accompanied by geometrical and dipolar changes caused contraction and expansion of the systems. Recently, polymer liquid-crystalline elastomers containing azobenzenes, a novel system able to produce the photomechanical effects, have been developed to achieve fast and large photoinduced deformations. It is interesting that not only photoinduced contraction but also photoinduced bending have been achieved. These deformations are ascribed to the subtle variation in microscopic ordering during the photochemical phase transition of the polymer liquid-crystalline elastomers. This new photomechanical system is potential for application in driving micromachines and nanomachines without the aid of batteries, motors and gears.

Abstract:The photomechanical behavior of cross-linked azobenzene-containing liquid-crystalline polymer films was investigated by means of simultaneous measurement of their optical and mechanical properties. The connection between photoisomerization of the azobenzene moieties, photoinduced change in molecular alignment, photoinduced stress generation, and macroscopic bending was analyzed. Upon UV irradiation, the films exhibited bending due to gradient in cis-azobenzene content, and subsequent unbending when cis-azobenzene content became uniform throughout the film. The maximum photoinduced stress was generated in the same time scale as the time required to reach photostationary state in the cis-azobenzene concentration. The maximum values of photogenerated stress strongly depended on the crosslinker concentration, even if the azobenzene concentration and the cis-azobenzene content in the photostationary state were similar for all the polymer films. The stress is connected to the initial Young's modulus and also to the photoinduced change in birefringence of the polymer films. In addition, a significant photoinduced decrease in Young's modulus was for the first time observed in cross-linked azobenzene-containing liquid-crystalline polymers, which is likely to be an important factor in dictating their photomechanical behavior.
Azobenzene Sulphonic Dye Photoalignment as a Means to Fabricate Liquid Crystalline Conjugated Polymer Chain‐Orientation‐Based Optical Structures

Abstract:The use of a noncontact photoalignment method to fabricate in‐plane optical structures, defined by the local uniaxial ordering of liquid crystalline conjugated polymer chains, is reported. Molecular orientation is demonstrated for both green‐light‐emitting fluorene‐benzothiadiazole alternating copolymer F8BT and F8BT/red light emitting complex copolymer Red‐F binary blend films deposited on a well‐known azobenzene sulphonic dye photoalignment material SD1. Absorption anisotropy ratios of up to 9.7 are readily achieved for 150 nm thickness F8BT films. Spatial pattern definition, afforded by masking the UV polarized light exposure of the photoalignment layer, allows the fabrication of optical structures with a resolution down to the micron scale. The alignment process is further extended to enable the serial, independent orientation of films deposited on top of each other and to permit the molecular orientation to follow curvilinear patterns. In the former case, this allows F8BT bilayer structures to be fabricated that show even higher absorption anisotropy ratios, up to ≈12, close to the theoretical limit for the previously deduced ≈22° optical transition dipole moment angle relative to the chain axis.

Abstract:This chapter is devoted to the photoinduced orientation and anisotropy of azo polymers, which are intensively investigated as a way for holographic recording and data storage based on the polarization gratings. The orientation induced by linearly polarized light endows the polymer films with dichroism and birefringence. Moreover, out-of-plane orientation and chirality can also be induced by irradiation with unpolarized light and circularly polarized light. The main types of the photoanisotropic materials include liquid crystalline azo polymers, amorphous azo polymers, amphiphilic azo polymers, azo polyelectrolytes, and azo block copolymers. The preparation, structure-property relationship, mechanism and models, and possible application in holography are presented in this chapter.
Light‐Induced in Situ Dynamic Ordered Wrinkling with Arbitrarily Tailorable Wrinkling Orientation for Photoresponsive Soft Photonics

Abstract:Spontaneous surface wrinkling provides a simple universal approach to pattern surfaces for a new generation of smart systems. Dynamic programmable manipulation of surface wrinkling especially with on-demand wrinkling orientation is highly required yet remains a great challenge. Here, an intriguing azopolymer-based system with a novel polarization-responsive dynamic oriented wrinkling behavior is reported. During a linearly polarized light illumination, in situ dynamic aligned wrinkling is induced with the wrinkling orientation perpendicular to the polarization direction, irrespective of as-imposed boundaries. This polarization-dependent dynamic wrinkling is attributed to the polarized light-induced photo-orientation of azopolymer. This fascinating polarization-dependent dynamic wrinkling characteristic offers a desirable platform to fabricate unprecedented all-optically reconfigurable hierarchical wrinkling morphologies with arbitrarily tailorable wrinkling orientation and location. As demonstrated, the polarization-responsive dynamic wrinkling system has wide applications for photoresponsive soft photonics, in particular as an adoptable nonmechanical beam steering device to differentiate/manipulate light propagation in the case of different incident light polarizations/wavelengths/intensities.
