Abstract:Using a 1-year longitudinal design, we examined the role of personal demands and personal resources in long-term health impairment and motivational processes among master students. Based on the job demands-resources theory and transactional model of stress, we hypothesized that students' personal demands (i.e., irrational performance demands, awfulizing and irrational need for control) predict perceived study demands one year later, and indirectly relate to burnout. Furthermore, we predicted that personal resources indirectly associate with study engagement via students' perceived study resources one year later. These hypotheses were tested in a sample of Dutch master students (N = 220 at T1 and T2) using structural equation modelling. As hypothesized, personal demands and personal resources at T1 predicted study demands and study resources one year later (T2, β = .25–.42, p <. 05), respectively. Study-home interference [study demand] mediated the association between personal demands and burnout (β = .08, p = .029), whereas opportunities for development [study resource] mediated the association between personal resources and study engagement (β = .08, p = .014). Hence, personal demands and personal resources relate indirectly to students' burnout and engagement one year later via a heightened level of specific study demands and study resources. Accordingly, the present research expands the propositions of the JD-R Theory by proposing personal demands as a relevant factor for students' long-term well-being.

Abstract:Research shows that students experience substantial levels of burnout during their studies. This study explores the role of personal demands on students’ well-being. After providing a conceptualization of personal demands, we examined the role of personal demands in the Job Demands-Resources (JD-R) model. Based on the Transactional Model of Stress, we hypothesized that students with high personal demands experience more burnout symptoms because they perceive more elements in their study as demanding (i.e., mediation hypothesis). At the same time, we hypothesized that the associations between study demands and burnout might be stronger for students with high versus low personal demands (i.e., moderation hypothesis). In order to test both hypotheses, we collected data from 578 master students. The data were analyzed with latent moderation and mediation analyses in Mplus. The results showed that students’ personal demands predicted burnout symptoms via the perception of study demands. Personal demands did not moderate the relationship between study demands and burnout. The findings of the present study expand the JD-R model by indicating that personal demands relate to burnout symptoms via the perception of study demands. Theoretical and practical implications are discussed.

Explaining the relationships between job characteristics, burnout, and engagement: The role of basic psychological need satisfaction

Abstract:Within the Job Demands-Resources model, the presence of job demands (e.g., work pressure) and the absence of job resources (e.g., social support) relate to burnout through a psychological energetic process, whereas the presence of job resources associates with work engagement through a motivational process. Although various mechanisms have been suggested to understand these processes, empirical evidence for these mechanisms is scarce within the JD-R framework. This study examines the role of basic need satisfaction, as defined within Self-Determination Theory, in the relationships between job demands, job resources, and employees’ exhaustion and vigour, the main components of burnout and engagement, respectively. Structural equation modelling in a heterogeneous sample of 745 employees of the Dutch-speaking part of Belgium confirmed that satisfaction of basic psychological needs partially explained the relationships from job demands to exhaustion and from job resources to vigour. It fully accounted for the relationship between job resources and exhaustion. We conclude that the current study adds to the research pointing at need satisfaction as a promising underlying mechanism for employees’ thriving at work.

Abstract:Abstract Introduction Workplace mental health issues, and particularly burnout (Jackson & Maslach, 1982) are increasing, with detrimental consequences for all. The Job Demands-Resources Model (JD-R; Demerouti, et al., 2001) is one of the dominant burnout models, but there have been inconsistent findings, with demands sometimes leading to positive outcomes. Drawing on JD-R research, the challenge-hindrance framework (Lepine et al., 2005) and self-determination theory (Deci et al, 2001), this study investigates how appraisals and psychological needs satisfaction affect relationships between demands, and burnout and engagement. Methods A time-lagged online survey with 2 measurement occasions was conducted with 160 employees across diverse locations and occupations (51.9% women, mean age 30). Data were analyzed using multiple regression and PROCESS. Results Hindrance appraisals strengthened the positive relationship between demands and burnout, and demands were negatively related to engagement when hindrance appraisal was high, but positively contributed to it when hindrance appraisal was low. Challenge appraisals weakened a positive relationship between demands and engagement, as engagement remained high regardless of the level of demands. Similarly, positive relationships between demands and engagement were weaker when relatedness and autonomy needs satisfaction were high. Discussion Findings suggest hindrance appraisals enhance the negative impact of demands on burnout and reverse potential benefits for engagement. Interestingly, challenge appraisals and satisfied needs weakened relationships between demands and engagement, possibly because when employees perceive their work to be challenging and psychological needs to be satisfied, greater demands is less impactful. Conclusion This study highlights the relevance and complex functioning of appraisals and need satisfaction in the burnout/engagement process.

Abstract:Two of the most significant challenges that higher education institutions are currently addressing are students' failure and drop-out prevention, as well as the promotion of students’ retention and success. The present study aimed at analysing the role that different variables play in the prediction of Academic Engagement and Burnout in first-year university students, under a multivariate perspective. The contribution of relevant psychological strengths in academic environments (Resilience, Personal initiative, and Academic Motivation), Procrastination and different coping strategies facing studies (Persistence, Avoidance and Anxiety) was explored. Also, the perception of academic demands and stress, students' affect (positive and negative) and the academic satisfaction was considered. Finally, an analysis of different engaged and burnt-out profiles of students was carried out. The contribution of the Efficacy subscale of Academic Burnout as an independent personal resource, and the consideration of the so-called Core Burnout, were subject of analysis. A sample of 172 first-year students of face-to-face universities, 68.8% women with a mean age of 22.99 years (SD = 7.62) volunteered to participate online in this study. The results showed, on the one hand, that Academic Engagement consisted mainly on a positive and intrinsic motivational construct, also characterised by academic efficacy, persistence as an active coping strategy, positive affect and satisfaction. On the other hand Core Burnout was mainly characterised by the perception of higher demands (e.g. academic overload), maladaptive learning behaviours and coping strategies such as procrastination and avoidance of difficulties, negative affect and dissatisfaction. Different profiles of engaged and burnt-out students were also analysed showing strong differences regarding personal strengths, coping with learning strategies, well-being and satisfaction with studies.These results could help us to set bases for the development of early support and prevention programs for students’ Burnout, as well as actions aiming at promoting students’ Engagement and well-being during their first academic year.

Abstract:The main objective of this study was to investigate reciprocal effects between personal resources, job/study resources, engagement, and mental health. Building on the Conservation of Resources Theory and the Job–Demands Resources (JD-R) model, we explored whether positive cycles evolve between all study variables over time. In two studies we surveyed 326 psychotherapists and 550 students in two and three waves respectively over a 5-month time lag. Structural equation modelling analyses revealed that all variables, job/study resources, personal resources, engagement, and mental health, show direct reciprocal relationships over time. Mediation analyses provided evidence for gain cycles, revealing that personal resources simultaneously serve as predictors, mediators, and outcomes on the motivational axis of JD-R. Finally, mental health emerges as a long-term outcome on the motivational axis. The findings suggest that a one-directional view of relationships falls short in explaining the underlying dynamics. They also provide evidence for gain cycles between personal resources, engagement, and mental health.

Abstract:Introduction: Higher education students experience significant levels of exhaustion in their studies, yet there are limited evidence-based support programs available. Therefore, this study evaluated a novel intervention approach by testing the effectiveness of two online interventions based on the study demands-resources framework. These interventions aimed to balance demands and resources. Derived from the theoretical assumptions of the framework, we hypothesized that the interventions would increase study and personal resources, engagement, and study crafting, and decrease study demands, exhaustion, and self-undermining. Additionally, we hypothesized that demands and resources would mediate the effects of the intervention on engagement, exhaustion, study crafting, and self-undermining. Methods: Conducted as a randomized controlled trial with a waitlist control group ( n = 71), the study involved participants in two intervention groups who engaged with the interventions for 2 weeks. Intervention group 1 ( n = 64) focused on adapting demands, while intervention group 2 ( n = 70) focused on increasing resources. The design allowed for a comparison of the effectiveness of these different approaches. Participants completed questionnaires before and after the intervention, and at a 5-week follow-up. Results: Results of the analyses of variance with repeated measures revealed that the interventions had significant positive effects on the personal resource mindfulness, two study crafting strategies, self-undermining, and exhaustion. Notably, intervention group 2 exhibited more positive outcomes. The hypothesized mediation effects through mindfulness were partially supported. Discussion: The study demonstrates the considerable potential of interventions based on the study demands-resources framework for higher education institutions in supporting student well-being.

Abstract:Introduction: Student burnout has become a health concern in higher education systems. Its prevalence rates are high due to specific demands in this life situation. It leads not only to increased academic dropout rates but is also associated with negative health outcomes both physically and mentally. Its counterpart is study engagement, which is a positive, fulfilling, study-related attitude characterized by energy, dedication, and absorption. There has not been a systematical approach covering the demands directly posed by the academic environment itself. Additionally, academic subject fields apart from medicine and nursing sciences have been mostly neglected in regards to this research field. The aim of the study is therefore to identify contributing factors for both burnout and engagement within the academic environment in a sample of different subject fields at a German university. Methods: In a cross-sectional study, a sample of 3,451 students of all academic subjects at a technical university in Germany has been analyzed using an online survey. Sociodemographic data, study engagement, student burnout, study satisfaction, academic workload, number of semesters and occupational liabilities have been analyzed. Binary logistic regression was used to determine the associations of burnout symptoms and study engagement. Results: Almost a third of the students showed frequent burnout symptoms, while 42.5% showed a high degree of study engagement with no differences in gender. Age was identified as a risk factor for frequent signs of cynicism (OR = 1.073). Study satisfaction (OR between 0.459 and 0.702), semester progression (OR = 0.959) and working moderately (OR between 0.605 and 0.637) was associated with fewer symptoms in different burnout-dimensions. Study satisfaction is positively associated with study engagement (OR = 2.676). Academic workload is positively related to both burnout (OR between 1.014 and 1.021) and study engagement (OR = 1.014). Discussion: A substantial number of students show frequent symptoms of burnout and the majority is not highly engaged. The included factors contribute to the model to various degrees and show that university-bound factors play a major role. Fostering a supportive environment is key for study engagement, health and well-being. The inclusion of further, individual factors should be a future concern in order to find and promote strategies for a healthy education system.

Cutaneous electrical stimulation to improve balance performance in patients with sub-acute stroke: a randomised controlled trial.

Abstract:Falls and fall-related injuries after stroke are common and include fractures, fear of falling, and the consequent restriction of activity. Physical rehabilitation can restore balance control, promote functional recovery, and prevent secondary complications, disability, and handicap. In chronic stroke patients, electric somatosensory stimulation can augment the effects of task-related training in improving lower limb strength and walking capacity.1,2 The anatomic connections between the somatosensory cortex and motor cortex have been shown to provide the anatomic substrate through which electrical stimulation-induced somatosensory inputs can enhance motor cortical reorganisation following stroke.3 The greatest improvement in motor function occurs between 3 and 6 weeks post-stroke, and plateaus at 90 days.4 The first 8 weeks after stroke are the best time to enhance motor recovery. The null hypothesis was that transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS) plus taskoriented balance training (TOBT) did not differ significantly to placebo-stimulation (P-STIM) plus TOBT in recovery of balance and motor function after the first sub-acute stroke.

Abstract:This study investigated influences of core self-evaluation traits, career decision-making difficulties and social support on student burnout and engagement. A cross-sectional design was used with a non-probability quota sample. In the multiple regression analyses, self-efficacy, inconsistent information due to internal conflict and (lack of) parental support were significant predictors of exhaustion, cynicism, vigour and dedication. Self-esteem was also a significant predictor for the two engagement dimensions. In addition, lack of information about the self, lack of information about the occupations and inconsistent information due to external conflict predicted cynicism.

Abstract:Academic burnout is a prevalent issue that has debilitating effects on students and refers to the phenomena of long-term fatigue and loss of interest in schoolwork, and is characterized by a student’s lack of engagement, dulled emotions, and feelings of helplessness. This survey-based study examined the predictive ability of two popular constructs in organizational psychology research, core self-evaluations, and perceived organizational support, to explain students’ academic burnout. Extending the Job Demands-Resources model and Conservation of Resources theory to the university context, the study investigated whether core self-evaluations and perceived organizational support would similarly predict burnout for 199 undergraduate students in a university setting as they do employees in work settings. Confirmatory factor analysis was employed to assess the factor structure of the variables, and moderated multiple regression was employed to test the hypotheses. Results indicated that that core self-evaluations and perceived organizational support were individually strong predictors of burnout, and that perceived organizational support had a small moderating effect on the core self-evaluations-burnout relationship. Implications and potential applications of these results are discussed as a means to mitigate the negative effects of academic burnout experienced by so many college students.

Abstract:Background: High job demands and low job resources may cause job strain and eventually result in burnout. However, previous research has generally ignored the roles of time and self-regulation. Objectives: This theoretical article synthesizes the literature to propose a multilevel model that delineates how acute job strain translates into enduring and severe job burnout. Methods: We integrate self-regulation perspectives in job demands-resources (JD-R) theory to propose that short-term job strain and eventually enduring burnout is the result of consistently high job demands and low job resources – combined with failed self-regulation. Results: The model shows that when employees are confronted with increased job strain, they are more likely to use maladaptive self-regulation strategies, such as coping inflexibility and self-undermining. In addition, when job strain increases, employees are less likely to use adaptive self-regulation strategies, such as job stress recovery and job crafting. It follows that when the job becomes more stressful, stable resources become more important. Organizational resources such as human resource practices and healthy leadership may help employees to regulate their short-term fatigue and avoid enduring burnout. Furthermore, key personal resources like emotional intelligence and proactive personality may help employees to recognize and regulate their fatigue in an effective way. Conclusion: The proposed model of burnout expands JD-R theory and offers important practical implications for the prevention and reduction of burnout.
Burnout and Engagement in University Students

Abstract:This study examines burnout and engagement—the hypothesized opposite of burnout—in university students from Spain ( n = 623), Portugal ( n = 727), and the Netherlands ( n = 311). Confirmatory factor analyses showed that the expected three-factor structures of the adapted versions of the Maslach Burnout Inventory (MBI) for students (including Exhaustion, Cynicism, and Reduced Efficacy) and the Utrecht Work Engagement Scale (UWES) for students (including Vigor, Dedication, and Absorption) fitted to the data of each sample. However, a rigorous test revealed that most factor loadings of the MBI were not invariant across all samples. Results with the UWES were slightly better, indicating invariance of factor loadings of Absorption in all samples and of Vigor in two of the three samples. Furthermore, as hypothesized, the burnout and engagement subscales were negatively correlated. Finally, irrespective of country, Efficacy and Vigor were positively related to academic performance, that is, the number of passed exams relative to the total number of exams in the previous term.

What makes nurses flourish at work? How the perceived clinical work environment relates to nurse motivation and well-being: A cross-sectional study

Abstract:Background: Literature shows that the work environment is a main determinant of nurses' well-being and psychological strain; yet, the (psychological) mechanisms underlying this relationship remain understudied. Objective: This study explored the underlying (psychological) mechanisms (why) and boundary conditions (when) by which characteristics present in the clinical work environment influence nurses' well-being. We investigated the mediating role of intrinsic motivation in the relationship of job demands and job resources with burnout vs. work engagement. In addition, we examined if job resources strengthen the relationship of job demands with intrinsic motivation and burnout. Design: A cross-sectional survey study. Setting(s): General acute care hospitals in Belgium (n = 14). Participants: Direct care nurses (n = 1729). Methods: Data were collected by means of online questionnaires between October 2020 and July 2021. Study variables included burnout, work engagement, intrinsic motivation and a set of different job demands (workload, role conflicts, emotional demands, red tape) and job resources (performance feedback, autonomy, skill use, opportunity for growth, and value congruence). All variables were obtained using self-report measures. The central hypotheses were tested using structural equation modeling. Results: Job resources appeared to be a crucial factor for nurses' health showing positive associations with work motivation (β = 0.513) and work engagement (β = 0.462) and negative associations with burnout (β = -0.216). Job demands remained an essential factor that harms psychological health and is associated with increased burnout (β = 0.489). Our results confirmed that intrinsic motivation mediated the relationship of job resources with work engagement (β = 0.170) and burnout (β = -0.135). In addition, job resources moderated the relationship of job demands with burnout (β = -0.039). Against our expectations, we found no associations between job demands and intrinsic motivation or a moderation effect of job resources on the respective relationship. Conclusions: A highly demanding work environment can be a source of significant stress which may put nurses' health at severe risk. Nurses who perceive sufficient job resources such as feedback, autonomy and opportunities for growth and development, are likely to feel intrinsically motivated at work. In addition, it will foster their work engagement and prevent them from burning out, particularly when job demands are high. Abstract:Objectives: The primary objective of this study was to explore the interplay of psychological conditions that influenced personal engagement among university students. As a theoretical lens through which to investigate this, the study used the job demands-resources model, the study demands-resources model, and the leader–member exchange theory. This study further aimed to explore outcomes that supported students in becoming lifelong learners (i.e., deep-learning approach). Method: Participants were undergraduate students registered at a South African university. We used a purposive, non-probability sampling strategy and employed a cross-sectional survey research design. This study used Mplus version 8.6 for the statistical analyses. Results: Results showed that the psychological conditions of meaningfulness (study resources), availability (burnout risk), and safety (student–leader–member exchange) influenced student engagement. In addition, the results showed that study demands were positively associated with student engagement, although this association can be regarded as small. Furthermore, study resources and student engagement were associated with a deep approach to learning. Conclusions: Findings from the present study demonstrated that Kahn’s theory carried implications beyond the workplace and held true in a student learning environment. Further, an exploration of the psychological conditions that led to engagement showed that the job demands-resources model and the study demands-resources model could be used to operationalise study resources as psychological meaningfulness and burnout risk as availability. Similarly, in the context of exploring the student-lecturer relationship, student leader–member exchange could be operationalised as psychological safety. Implication for Practice: Leaders in higher education are encouraged to focus not only on ensuring that students receive adequate support in terms of structures and physical resources during periods of uncertainty, such as the global COVID-19 pandemic, but to adopt a holistic approach that includes considering all the psychological conditions that encourage and promote students’ engagement.

Cross-sectional data were collected using psychometric instruments (Maslach Burnout Inventory – Student Survey, Social Support Satisfaction Scale for College Students, Brief COPE Scale for College Students, University Student Engagement Inventory, and Depression, Anxiety and Stress Scale), sociodemographic and academic variables, and analyzed using structural equation modeling. Results 532 students (76% response rate) enrolled in the study. Latent variables structural model presented a satisfactory fit to the data and confirmed the expected negative path between burnout and dropout intention (β DI<-SB =0.430; p <.001) and the latent moderation burnout x engagement (β DI<-SB*SE =-0.218; p <.001). Conclusion Academic engagement attenuates the impact of burnout on dropout intention, working as a protective factor. Social support satisfaction and adaptive coping are associated with increased levels of academic engagement, and general distress and maladaptive coping are associated with burnout. Medical Schools should develop interventions to prevent dropout intention, tackle students' stress and academic challenges, and develop their academic engagement levels.

Abstract:The purpose of the study was to evaluate the relationship between personal and organizational demands and resources supported by the Job and Demands Resources (JD-R) model. 252 workers participated, 71% women, mean age 34 years (SD = 12) and mean length of service of 28 months (SD = 16). Data collection was online. Validity scales and a sociodemographic questionnaire evaluated the variables. One question evaluated perception of general health. Descriptive statistics and structural equations were performed for data analysis. The results confirm model adequacy to explain the relationships between organizational phenomena. However, these results are not generalizable. Organizations can take action to improve employee engagement, and by reducing self-reports of health. Interventions on resilience and relationship conflicts would influence levels of engagement, and health reports, bringing return to the institution and well-being and health to workers. We point out limitations and applicability of the results.
Personality and burnout complaints: The mediating role of proactive burnout prevention behaviors at work

Abstract:The aim of this study is to gain insight into how and why certain personality traits are related to experiencing burnout complaints. Drawing on insights from a stimulus‐organism‐response (SOR) model of personality and affect and conservation of resources (COR) theory, we specifically focus on the role of five proactive behaviors to prevent burnout (PBPBs) at work. Two research questions are addressed: (1) How are the HEXACO personality traits related to burnout complaints, and (2) to what extent do the PBPBs aimed at increasing resources act as mediators between the engagement dimensions of personality and burnout complaints. We set up a two‐wave survey examining HEXACO personality, PBPBs at work, and burnout complaints in a sample of 172 employees. For our analyses we relied on multiple regression analyses and structural equation modeling. Our analyses revealed that employees high on Extraversion and Conscientiousness and low on Emotionality are less inclined to experience burnout complaints. For the trait of Conscientiousness, this could be partly explained because conscientious employees demonstrate more proactive behavior aimed at maintaining or increasing job control. Our research contributes to the burnout and personality literature as we offer insight into why specific personality dimensions are related to burnout complaints. Specific proactive behaviors aimed at increasing job resources appeared to play a small, yet relevant role in this respect, specifically for Conscientiousness. By studying the relationship between personality and behavior in association with burnout complaints, this study adds to our understanding of personalized preventive actions in the work context that can reduce burnout complaints.

Abstract:Prior research has shown that students face various stressors which can affect their psychological health. The present study examines the role of students' psychological need states in explaining their burnout and dropout intentions. More precisely, relying on recent findings from Self‐Determination Theory research, we examined whether students' psychological need unfulfilment could contribute to explain their ill‐being over and above need satisfaction and frustration. To this end, we also tested the validity of a tripartite instrument allowing to assess these need states in academic settings (Psychological Need States in Education‐Scale [PNSE‐S]). A study was conducted among two samples of high school (N = 473; Sample 1) and college (N = 1143; Sample 2) students. Results supported the construct validity of the 35‐item PNSE‐S in both samples by showing that students' relatedness, autonomy, and competence unfulfilment can be modelled as distinct need states alongside the frustration and satisfaction of those three needs. Moreover, these different need states displayed a well‐differentiated pattern of associations with various facets of student burnout and with dropout intentions. Results also showed the critical role of psychological need unfulfilment in explaining students' ill‐being.
