Abstract:Modulation of chiroptics, chiral phenomena of tonic switches. One of the most effective methods for applications, including chirality-specific biosensing and pho- the optical properties, is, pivotal in a variety of advanced :achieving this control is assembly of the optical moieties into chiral nanostructures. Lipopeptide self-assemblies have been extensively employed as soft templates to organize composites into low-dimensional superstructures due to their rigidity and ease of functionalization. Therefore, an appealing approach is to provide chiroptical control by using lipopeptide self assemblies as templates to assemble chromophores. Herein, two lipopeptidic molecules, namely, C-14-FFK and C-14-FK, composed of phenylalanine and lysine residues conjugated to a myristic acid chain, were custom-designed. Spectroscopic and microscopic characterizations indicated that C-14-FFK self-assembled to wide, slightly left-handed nanoribbons, while C-14-FK formed narrow, intensely right-handed nanofibers. The different chirality was derived from the distinct self-assembly driving forces, especially the molecular bending dimensions. These superstructures' presented an ideal capability to serve as soft templates to assemble porphyrin (ZnTPyP) through noncovalent electrostatic attractive interactions, or assemble the phenolic groups through covalent conjugation to peptide backbones. The distinct exciton coupling of the chromophores allowed their achiral optics to become chiral, showing negative Cotton effect when templated by nanoribbons and positive Cotton effect with nanofibers as templates. Following replacement of the lipopeptides with their D-type enantiomers, the handedness of the superstructures and the associated chiroptics were reversed and presented "mirror" symmetric CD signals to their L-type counterparts. These findings may pave the way to the formation of morphologically and chioptically controllable nanomaterials.

Abstract:Changing the chirality of the terminal charged residues of an amphiphilic hexapeptide AcI4K2‐NH2 gives rise to distinct nanostructures and supramolecular handedness. The chiral alterations of the two C‐terminal lysine residues cause the formation of diverse single β‐strand conformations, and the final self‐assembled nanostructures and handedness are determined by the twisting direction and degree of single β‐strands. Peptide assemblies are promising nanomaterials, with their properties and technological applications being highly hinged on their supramolecular architectures. Here, how changing the chirality of the terminal charged residues of an amphiphilic hexapeptide sequence Ac‐I4K2‐NH2 gives rise to distinct nanostructures and supramolecular handedness is reported. Microscopic imaging and neutron scattering measurements show thin nanofibrils, thick nanofibrils, and wide nanotubes self‐assembled from four stereoisomers. Spectroscopic and solid‐state nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) analyses reveal that these isomeric peptides adopt similar anti‐parallel β‐sheet secondary structures. Further theoretical calculations demonstrate that the chiral alterations of the two C‐terminal lysine residues cause the formation of diverse single β‐strand conformations, and the final self‐assembled nanostructures and handedness are determined by the twisting direction and degree of single β‐strands. This work not only lays a useful foundation for the fabrication of diverse peptide nanostructures by manipulating the chirality of specific residues but also provides a framework for predicting the supramolecular structures and handedness of peptide assemblies from single molecule conformations.

Abstract:Self‐assembly of peptides into highly ordered chiral nanostructures has great potential applications in optics, sensing, biomedicine, and templated synthesis. However, the detailed mechanism for the chiral amplification and spontaneous ordering during the self‐assembly of peptides remains largely unexplored. Here, it is shown that by topology control of the co‐assembly of a simple dipeptide and a chiral diamine within a confined film, the supramolecular structures can be controlled precisely from hierarchically organized helical bundles to microcrystals and then parallel aligned nanohelices. The peptide and diamines can co‐assemble into aligned microcrystals when the molar ratio (χ = Cdiamine/Cpeptide) of the two components is 0.5. However, by changing the χ value, excess peptides or diamines create topological defects during the self‐assembly process. This leads to chiral amplification and the formation of long‐range‐ordered nanohelical arrays with controlled phase behaviors. Moreover, the formation of right‐ or left‐handed nanohelices can be further inversed by the topological control, without the need to change the chirality of the peptides. These findings provide new insights into the chiral self‐assembly of amyloid‐related peptides and offer a facile strategy to fabricate highly ordered functional materials.
Designing Coiled Coils for Heterochiral Complexation to Enhance Binding and Enzymatic Stability

Abstract:Coiled coils, commonly found in native proteins, are helical motifs important for mediating intermolecular interactions. While coiled coils are attractive for use in new therapies and biomaterials, the lack of enzymatic stability of naturally occurring l-peptides may limit their implementation in biological environments. d-peptides are of interest for biomedical applications as they are resistant to enzymatic degradation and recent reports indicate that stereochemistry-driven interactions, achieved by blending d- and l-peptides, yield access to a greater range of binding affinities and a resistance to enzymatic degradation compared to l-peptides alone. To our knowledge, this effect has not been studied in coiled coils. Here, we investigate the effects of blending heterochiral E/K coiled coils, which are a set of coiled coils widely used in biomaterials. We found that we needed to redesign the coiled coils from a repeating pattern of seven amino acids (heptad) to a repeating pattern of 11 amino acids (hendecad) to make them more amenable to heterochiral complex formation. The redesigned hendecad coiled coils form both homochiral and heterochiral complexes, where the heterochiral complexes have stronger heats of binding between the constituent peptides and are more enzymatically stable than the analogous homochiral complexes. Our results highlight the ability to design peptides to make them amenable to heterochiral complexation, so as to achieve desirable properties like increased enzymatic stability and stronger binding. Looking forward, understanding how to engineer peptides to utilize stereochemistry as a materials design tool will be important to the development of next-generation therapeutics and biomaterials.

Abstract:Chirality is one of the most important structural features in biological systems. Peptides, as a class of small biomolecules, can self-assemble into various chiral supramolecular polymers with unprecedented levels of diversity and complexity, which have practical ramifications in various fields from catalysis to sensing, optics, and biomedicine. In this review, we will focus on the chiral transfer during peptide self-assembly from the molecular scale to the nano-, micro- and mesoscale, and highlight the vital roles of chirality in determining the structures and functions of the self-assembled supramolecular polymeric materials. By rational control of the chiral self-assembly of peptide monomers, supramolecular polymers with sophisticated hierarchical structures and enhanced chemical and biological functions can readily be achieved. These can provide inspiration for researchers to design highly efficient asymmetric catalysts, templates fabricating materials with tunable chiroptics, or to synthesize biomaterials with chirality-encoded properties for biomedical applications.

Abstract:The self-assembly of peptides into ordered nanostructures is important for understanding both peptide molecular interactions and nanotechnological applications. However, because of the complexity and various self-assembling pathways of peptide molecules, design of self-assembling helical peptides with high controllability and tunability is challenging. We report a new self-assembling mode that uses in-tether chiral center-induced helical peptides as a platform for tunable peptide self-assembly with good controllability. It was found that self-assembling behavior was governed by in-tether substitutional groups, where chirality determined the formation of helical structures and aromaticity provided the driving force for self-assembly. Both factors were essential for peptide self-assembly to occur. Experiments and theoretical calculations indicate long-range crystal-like packing in the self-assembly, which was stabilized by a synergy of interpeptide π-π and π-sulfur interactions and hydrogen bond networks. In addition, the self-assembled peptide nanomaterials were demonstrated to be promising candidate materials for applications in biocompatible electrochemical supercapacitors.
Electrostatic and Aromatic Interaction-Directed Supramolecular Self-Assembly of a Designed Fmoc-Tripeptide into Helical Nanoribbons

Abstract:Supramolecular self-assembly offers an efficient pathway for creating macroscopically chiral structures in biology and materials science. Here, a new peptide consisting of an N-(9-fluorenylmethoxycarbonyl) headgroup connected to an aromatic phenylalanine-tryptophan dipeptide and terminated with zwitterionic lysine (Fmoc-FWK) and its cationic form (Fmoc-FWK-NH2) were designed for self-assembly into chiral structures. It was found that the Fmoc-FWK peptide self-assembled into left-handed helical nanoribbons at pH 11.2-11.8, whereas it formed nanofibers at pH 5 and 12 and large flat ribbons composed of many nanofibers in the pH range of 6-11. However, only nanofibers were observed in the cases of Fmoc-FWK-NH2 at different values. A series of structural characterizations based on CD, FTIR, UV-vis and fluorescence spectroscopy reveal that the electrostatic and aromatic interactions and the associated hydrogen bonding direct the self-assembly into various structures. The enhanced π-π stacking and hydrogen bonding were found in the helical nanoribbons. This difference in intermolecular interactions should be derived from the ionization of carboxyl and amino groups from lysine residues at different pH values. Furthermore, we performed molecular dynamics simulations to gain insight into the assembly mechanisms. The results imply that a relatively rigid molecular conformation and the strong intramolecular aromatic interaction between Trp and Fmoc groups favor chiral self-assembly. This study is the first attempt to design a Fmoc-tripeptide for the fabrication of helical structures with macroscopic chirality, which provides a successful example and allows us to create new peptide-based chiral assembly systems.

Bile acids extend longevity beyond calorie restriction

Abstract:The discovery of potential anti-aging treatment capable of extending both our healthy aging and perhaps our longevity resuscitated an old human dream. It also brought about inordinate interest in these studies. While calorie restriction (CR) is still the best known intervention to increase life span, anti-aging molecules could mimic this effect without reducing nutrient intake. Such compounds, like rapamycin and spermidine, believed to be CR mimetic, have been discovered using the yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae. The interest in such molecules stems from their universal action on others species including mammals [1]. In this issue of Aging, a study by Goldberg and colleagues presents an original screen designed to isolate molecules that further lengthen the life span of yeast under calorie restriction rather than imitating this effect [2]. In yeast, CR can be obtained by decreasing glucose concentration in the media. This intervention extends significantly chronological life span, i.e the time a yeast population remains viable in stationary phase [3]. By knocking-out peroxisomal proteins import (using a pex5Δ strain), the authors impaired beta-oxidation. As a consequence, the effects of CR on longevity are entirely abrogated. This genetic background was used to screen for chemical compounds that restore long life span under CR condition by targeting lipid metabolism. Among the chemical compounds identified, the authors focus on one group representing 6 bile acids compounds, the most efficient of them being lithocholic acid (LCA). Bile acids are mildly toxic oxidized derivatives of cholesterol that play important roles in lipid uptake by the intestine. Interestingly, none of the previously known small molecules that increase chronological life span in yeast (rapamycin, spermidine and methionine sulfoximine) were among the compounds that rescue the short longevity of pex5Δ under CR. While the effect of bile acids on life span was identified in a pex5Δ strain, LCA also extends the life span of wild type yeast by over two fold in glucose restricted medium as compared to regular medium. This observation suggests that LCA acts on a substrate active during calorie restriction. Although the mechanism by which bile acids increase life span is still unclear, Goldberg and colleagues provide several clues that shed light on this phenomenon. Among them, LCA treatment improves triacylglycerol-dependent lipid storage, increases stress resistance, and improves mitochondrial fitness. Using genetics, the authors found that the target of LCA is most likely inhibited by Tor1 signaling and partially regulated by cAMP/PKA/Rim15, two pathways known to regulate aging rate in yeast [4,5]. However, as yeasts do not synthesize bile acids, the mechanism of action of LCA has yet to be elucidated. Indeed, this study raises several interesting questions. Does LCA act as a pharmacological agent by binding a specific receptor in yeast or does it increase longevity by stimulating stress response due to its mild toxic effect (by hormesis)? Another question is whether bile acids or other related molecules can play an anti-aging role in metazoans. Current evidence from long-lived Little mice (Ghrhrlit/lit) and C. elegans proposes a role for bile acids in promoting longevity through a nuclear receptor mediated signaling [6,7]. If these xenobiotic molecules act through a universally conserved pathway from yeast to metazoans, it would make S. cerevisiae an unexpected model of choice to unravel this mechanism. Goldberg and colleagues open interesting and promising research to look for related compounds whose effectiveness would potentiate the longevity extension by calorie restricted diet. Studies in mammals will represent the real litmus test.
Modulating Peptide Self-Assembly via Triblock Chiral Patterning

Abstract:The suprastructural integrity of peptide self- assemblies is driven by an intricate array of cohesive interactions that guide and maintain hierarchical order. Seemingly minor alterations to atomic arrangement, such as substitution with D- amino acids, can dramatically affect assembly potential and resultant architecture. When a primary sequence is comprised of consecutive identical motifs, “block heterochiral” peptides can be generated by partitioning chiral inversions according to these underlying elementary units. In this work, we present a combinatorial exploration of all triblock chiral patterns for the model β-sheet-forming peptide KFE12 (Ac-(FKFE)3-NH2). Analysis of the four resulting enantiomer pairs reveals that each produces a unique morphology, ranging from minimal 4-nm-wide fibrils to micron-scale semi-structured aggregates. Our investigation of these variants illustrates a combination of conserved and divergent hierarchical features, reflecting complex interplay between persistent fundamental forces and the unique spatial implications of blockwise intramolecular chiral interfaces.

Fine Tuning the Properties of Stapled Peptides by Stereogenic Α-Amino Acid Bridges.

Abstract:Peptide stapling represents a versatile strategy to generate peptide derivatives with stable helical structures. While a wide range of skeletons have been investigated for cyclizing the side chains of peptides, the stereochemical outcomes from the linkers remain to be better understood. In this study, we incorporated α-amino acids (α-AAs) as bridges to construct side chain-stapled analogs of an interleukin-17A-binding peptide (HAP) and evaluated the impacts of the staples on the peptide's properties. While all AA-derived peptidyl staples drastically increase the enzymatic stability of HAP, our results indicate that compared to the D-amino acid bridges, the L-AA-based staples may generate more significant impacts in increasing the helicity and enhancing the interleukin-17A(IL-17A)-binding affinity of the modified peptide. Using Rosetta modelling and molecular dynamics (MD) simulations, we demonstrate that the chirality (L/D) possessed within the AAs substantially influences the conformation of stapled HAP peptides, providing either stabilizing or destabilizing effects. Based on the computational model, a modification of the stapled HAP leads to the discovery of a peptide with further enhanced helicity, enzymatic stability and IL-17A-inhibiting ability. This systematic study reveals that chiral AAs can serve as modulatory linkers for optimizing the structures and properties of stapled peptides.

Abstract:Abstract In neurodegenerative diseases, polymorphism and supramolecular assembly of β-sheet amyloids are implicated in many different etiologies and may adopt either a left- or right-handed supramolecular chirality. Yet, the underlying principles of how sequence regulates supramolecular chirality remains unknown. Here, we characterize the sequence specificity of the central core of amyloid-β 42 and design derivatives which enable chirality inversion at biologically relevant temperatures. We further find that C-terminal modifications can tune the energy barrier of a left-to-right chiral inversion. Leveraging this design principle, we demonstrate how temperature-triggered chiral inversion of peptides hosting therapeutic payloads modulates the dosed release of an anticancer drug. These results suggest a generalizable approach for fine-tuning supramolecular chirality that can be applied in developing treatments to regulate amyloid morphology in neurodegeneration as well as in other disease states.

Dephosphorylation of D-peptide Derivatives to Form Biofunctional, Supramolecular Nanofibers/hydrogels and Their Potential Applications for Intracellular Imaging and Intratumoral Chemotherapy.

Abstract:D-Peptides, as the enantiomers of the naturally occurring L-peptides, usually resist endogenous proteases and are presumably insensitive to most enzymes. But, it is unclear whether or how a phosphatase catalyzes the dephosphorylation from D-peptides. In this work, we examine the formation of the nanofibers of D-peptides via enzymatic dephosphorylation. By comparing the enzymatic hydrogelation of L-peptide and D-peptide based hydrogelators, we find that the chirality of the precursors of the hydrogelators affects little on the enzymatic hydrogelation resulted from the removal of the phosphate group from a tyrosine phosphate residue. The attachment of a therapeutic agent (e.g., taxol) or a fluorophore (e.g., 4-nitro-2,1,3-benzoxadiazole) to the D-peptide based hydrogelators affords a new type of biostable or biocompatible hydrogelators, which may find applications in intratumoral chemotherapy or intracellular imaging, respectively. This work, as the first comprehensive and systematic study of the unexpected enzymatic dephosphorylation of D-peptides, illustrates a useful approach to generate supramolecular hydrogels that have both biostability and other desired functions.
Heterochiral tetrapeptide self‐assembly into hydrogel biomaterials for hydrolase mimicry

Abstract:Self‐assembling short peptides have attracted great interest as enzyme mimics, especially if the catalytic activity resides solely in the supramolecular structure so that it can be switched on/off as needed by controlling assembly/disassembly. Among the various enzyme classes, hydrolases find wide application in biomaterials, and their mimetics often contain His residues, in addition to either divalent cations or other amino acids to mimic the catalytic site. This work reports two self‐assembling tetrapeptides based on the Ser‐His motif for catalysis and the Phe‐Phe motif to drive amyloid structure formation. Both peptides form thermoreversible hydrogels in phosphate buffer at neutral pH that display a mild esterase‐like activity, as demonstrated on the hydrolysis of 4‐nitrophenyl acetate as a model substrate, although presence of Ser did not enhance catalytic activity. The systems are characterised by circular dichroism, transmission electron microscopy, oscillatory rheology and Thioflavin T fluorescence as an amyloid stain, to provide further insights that may assist the future design of improved supramolecular catalysts.

Abstract:Controlling and guiding cell behavior requires scaffolding materials capable of programming the three-dimensional (3-D) extracellular environment. In this study, we devised a new self-assembling peptide template for synthesizing nanofibrous hydrogels containing cell-responsive ligands. In particular, the insertion of a matrix metalloproteinase-2 (MMP-2) labile hexapeptide into the self-assembling building blocks of arginine-alanine-aspartate-alanine (RADA) was investigated. A series of peptides, varied by the position of the MMP-2 hexapeptide substrate and the length of RADA blocks, were prepared by parallel synthesis. Their self-assembling capabilities were characterized and compared by circular dichroism spectroscopy and dynamical mechanical analysis. Among all the different insertion patterns, the sequence comprising a centrically positioned MMP-2 substrate was flanked with three RADA units on each side self-assembled into a hydrogel matrix, with mechanical properties and nanofiber morphology comparable to the native material built with (RADA)4 alone. Exposure of the new gel to MMP-2 resulted in peptide cleavage, as confirmed by mass spectroscopy, and a decrease in surface hardness, as detected by nanoindentor, indicating that the enzyme mediated degradation was localized to the gel surface. The new design can be used for introducing biological functions into self-assembling peptides to create scaffolding materials with potential applications in areas such as tissue engineering and regenerative medicine.
Self-assembly of peptide nanofibers with chirality-encoded antimicrobial activity

Abstract:The nanostructured antimicrobial agents, self-assembled by the antimicrobial peptides (AMPs), represent an intriguing platform for the treatment of pathogens. Although the structural characteristics significantly influence antimicrobial functionality, the role of chirality is usually ignored and still unclear. Herein, two homochiral AMPs (all L- or all D-amino acids), including C16-LV4LR4 (LL) and C16-DV4DR4 (DD), and a heterochiral AMP with alternating D-/L-amino acids, C16-DV4LR4 (DL), were self-assembled into left-handed, right-handed, and right-handed helical nanofibers, respectively. The valine configuration determined the supramolecular chirality of the nanofibers. However, the DL molecules exhibited a highly aggregated propensity to form more stable helical nanofibers with a lower degree of twist and a larger helical pitch. This characteristic resulted in the optimal antimicrobial activity of the DL nanofibers against both Gram-negative and Gram-positive bacteria. Furthermore, the membrane permeability assay confirmed the higher activity for damaging the cell membrane by the DL nanofibers. These results demonstrated the significance of molecular chirality in directing the self-assembly of the amphiphilic peptides, eventually affecting their antimicrobial activity. This study opens up the possibility to fabricate promising nanostructured antimicrobial materials by controlling the chirality and structure of the materials.

Abstract:Collagenase is an important enzyme which plays an important role in degradation of collagen in wound healing, cancer metastasis and even in embryonic development. However, the mechanism of this degradation has not yet been completely understood. In the field of biomedical and protein engineering, the design and development of new peptide based materials is of main concern. In the present work an attempt has been made to study the effect of DAla in collagen like peptide (imino-poor region of type I collagen) on the structure and stability of peptide against enzyme hydrolysis. Effect of replacement of DAla in the collagen like peptide has been studied using circular dichroic spectroscopy (CD). Our findings suggest that, DAla substitution leads to conformational changes in the secondary structure and favours the formation of polyproline II conformation than its L-counterpart in the imino-poor region of collagen like peptides. Change in the chirality of alanine at the cleavage site of collagenase in the imino-poor region inhibits collagenolytic activity. This may find application in design of peptides and peptidomimics for enzyme-substrate interaction, specifically with reference to collagen and other extra cellular matrix proteins.

Abstract:Supramolecular helical structures formed by the assembly of biological and bio-inspired building blocks (typically amino acids, peptides and proteins) are an intriguing class of materials with prospective applications in sustainable biomedical technologies and electronics. Specifically, short peptide or single amino acid building blocks can give rise to ideal materials candidates in terms of low cost, adjustability, and compatibility. Yet, to date, reliable helical topologies with specific handedness have been highly challenging to obtain. Herein, we present simple N-terminal protected aromatic pyridyl amino acids that display helicity at the molecular level confirmed by single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis. The helical structure is stabilized by strong intermolecular hydrogen bonding between the pyridyl nitrogen and carboxylic acid groups. By comparing the specific l and d isomers with the dl racemic mixture, we explicitly demonstrate the influence of amino acid chirality on supramolecular crystal packing, self-assembly, and electromechanical properties. Atomic force microscopy (AFM) nanoindentation analysis confirms the strong rigidity of the dl assembly with very high Young's modulus (31.8 +/- 11.9 GPa) attributed to the stacked face-to-face dimers with macrocyclic architectures. The present study provides an effective strategy for precisely formulating supramolecular helical structures, which could pave the way for the development of new bio-electronic applications of smart chiroptical materials from functionalised amino acids.

Abstract:We applied solid- and solution-state nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy to examine the structure of multidomain peptides composed of self-assembling β-sheet domains linked to bioactive domains. Bioactive domains can be selected to stimulate specific biological responses (e.g., via receptor binding), while the β-sheets provide the desirable nanoscale properties. Although previous work has established the efficacy of multidomain peptides, molecular-level characterization is lacking. The bioactive domains are intended to remain solvent-accessible without being incorporated into the β-sheet structure. We tested for three possible anticipated molecular-level consequences of introducing bioactive domains to β-sheet-forming peptides: (1) the bioactive domain has no effect on the self-assembling peptide structure; (2) the bioactive domain is incorporated into the β-sheet nanofiber; and (3) the bioactive domain interferes with self-assembly such that nanofibers are not formed. The peptides involved in this study incorporated self-assembling domains based on the (SL)6 motif and bioactive domains including a VEGF-A mimic (QK), an IGF-mimic (IGF-1c), and a de novo SARS-CoV-2 binding peptide (SBP3). We observed all three of the anticipated outcomes from our examination of peptides, illustrating the unintended structural effects that could adversely affect the desired biofunctionality and biomaterial properties of the resulting peptide hydrogel. This work is the first attempt to evaluate the structural effects of incorporating bioactive domains into a set of peptides unified by a similar self-assembling peptide domain. These structural insights reveal unmet challenges in the design of highly tunable bioactive self-assembling peptide hydrogels.

Abstract:Collagen, the most abundant component of natural ECM, has attracted interest of scientific communities to replicate its multihierarchical self-assembling structure. Recent developments in collagen mimetic peptides were inclined toward the production of self-assembling short peptides capable of mimicking complex higher order structures with tunable mechanical properties. Here, we report for the first time, the crucial molecular design of oppositely charged collagen mimetic shortest bioactive pentapeptide sequences, as a minimalistic building block for development of next-generation biomaterials. Our rational design involves synthesis of two pentapeptides, where the fundamental molecular motif of collagen, that is, Gly-X-Y has been mutated at the central position with positively charged, lysine, and negatively charged, aspartate, residues. Depending on their overall surface charge, these peptides showed high propensity to form self-supporting hydrogel either at acidic or basic pH, which limits their biomedical applications. Interestingly, simple mixing of the two peptides was found to induce the coassembly of these designed peptides, which drives the formation of self-supporting hydrogel at physiological pH and thus enhanced the potential of exploring these peptides for biomedical purposes. This coassembly of ionic peptides was accompanied by the enhancement in the mechanical stiffness of the gels and reduction in overall zeta potential of the combined hydrogel, which provides the evidence for additional electrostatic interactions. Furthermore, the thixotropic nature of these gels offers an additional advantage of exploration of designer biomaterials as injectable gels. The nanofibers of coassembled hydrogel were found to be highly biocompatible to the fibroblast cells compared to the individual peptides, which was evident from their cytotoxicity studies. We anticipate that our rational design of ECM protein mimics in the form of short bioactive peptides will contribute significantly to the development of novel biomaterials and play a crucial role in the field of tissue engineering and regenerative medicines.
