Abstract:Anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury is a common and severe knee injury in sports. Knee flexion, abduction and internal rotation angles are considered crucial biomechanical indicators of the ACL injury risk but currently are computed in a laboratory with an optical motion capture. This paper introduces an inertial measurement unit (IMU) based algorithm for knee flexion, abduction and internal rotation estimation during ACL injury risk assessment tests, including drop landing and cutting tasks. This algorithm includes a special two-step complementary-based orientation filter and a special single-pose sensor-to-segment calibration procedure. Fourteen healthy subjects performed double-leg, single-leg drop landing and cutting tasks. Each subject wore four IMUs and reflective marker clusters on their thighs and shanks. For the presented knee angles algorithm with an empirical initial segment orientation, the root mean square errors (RMSEs) of the estimated continuous knee flexion, abduction and internal rotation cross all the movement tasks were 1.07 degrees 2.87 degrees and 2.64 degrees, and RMSEs of the peak knee flexion and peak knee abduction errors were 1.22 degrees and 3.82 degrees. The knee angles algorithm was capable of estimating knee abduction and internal rotation angles during drop landing and cutting tasks, and knee flexion estimation was substantially more accurate than previously reported approaches. Additionally, we found that for the presented algorithm, the accuracy of initial segment orientation was a critical factor for knee abduction and internal rotation estimations. The presented IMU-based knee angles algorithm could serve as a foundation to enable in-field biomechanical ACL injury risk assessment.

Abstract:Background The mechanism for noncontact anterior cruciate ligament injury is still a matter of controversy. Video analysis of injury tapes is the only method available to extract biomechanical information from actual anterior cruciate ligament injury cases. Purpose This article describes 3-dimensional knee joint kinematics in anterior cruciate ligament injury situations using a model-based image-matching technique. Study Design Case series; Level of evidence, 4. Methods Ten anterior cruciate ligament injury video sequences from women's handball and basketball were analyzed using the model-based image-matching method. Results The mean knee flexion angle among the 10 cases was 23° (range, 11°-30°) at initial contact (IC) and had increased by 24° (95% confidence interval [CI], 19°-29°) within the following 40 milliseconds. The mean valgus angle was neutral (range, -2° to 3°) at IC, but had increased by 12° (95% CI, 10°-13°) 40 milliseconds later. The knee was externally rotated 5° (range, -5° to 12°) at IC, but rotated internally by 8° (95% CI, 2°-14°) during the first 40 milliseconds, followed by external rotation of 17° (95% CI, 13°-22°). The mean peak vertical ground-reaction force was 3.2 times body weight (95% CI, 2.7-3.7), and occurred at 40 milliseconds after IC (range, 0-83). Conclusion Based on when the sudden changes in joint angular motion and the peak vertical ground-reaction force occurred, it is likely that the anterior cruciate ligament injury occurred approximately 40 milliseconds after IC. The kinematic patterns were surprisingly consistent among the 10 cases. All players had immediate valgus motion within 40 milliseconds after IC. Moreover, the tibia rotated internally during the first 40 milliseconds and then external rotation was observed, possibly after the anterior cruciate ligament had torn. These results suggest that valgus loading is a contributing factor in the anterior cruciate ligament injury mechanism and that internal tibial rotation is coupled with valgus motion. Prevention programs should focus on acquiring a good cutting and landing technique with knee flexion and without valgus loading of the knee.
Exploring pre-impact landing kinematics associated with increase and decrease in the anterior cruciate ligament injury risk

Abstract:This study aimed to explore the single-legged landing kinematics that could lead to increase or decrease in the risk of anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury. Immediate pre-impact kinematics at the single-legged landing from 33 healthy young female handball players were evaluated. Thereafter, two-year follow-up for ACL injury incidence was conducted, in which six new ACL injuries in non-dominant leg were registered. The evaluation of pre-impact kinematics across participants was performed first by the principal component analysis to decompose them into the kinematic components (KCs), and then by the linear discrimination analysis (LDA) for a set of KC-scores to obtain important KCs for discriminating injured and non-injured legs. The result of LDA showed that the combination of second major KC (knee flexion/extension angle and angular velocity) and some minor KCs such as torso medial/lateral leaning accurately discriminated the injured and non-injured legs with the error rate of 12.5%. To examine the mechanisms of this discriminative ability, we generated hypothetical pre-impact kinematics in the subspaces spanned by eigenvectors of multiple KCs, and examined relationships between pre-impact kinematics and the corresponding knee valgus torque predicted by the motion-equation-based model. The result showed that the second major KC and the minor KCs representing torso medial/lateral leaning and/or hip adduction/abduction angle, which contributed in LDA to discriminating injured legs, also significantly affected the frontal-plane knee loading patterns. These findings suggested that KC-based postural characterization of the pre-impact landing kinematics and the motion-equation-based knee stress quantification possibly explain the future ACL injury risks of female athletes.

Abstract:Background: Anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injures incur over USD 2 billion in annual medical costs and prevention has become a topic of interest in biomechanics. However, literature conflicts persist over how knee rotations contribute to ACL strain and ligament injury. To maximize the efficacy of ACL injury prevention, the effects of underlying mechanics need to be better understood. Questions/purposes: We applied robotically controlled, in vivo-derived kinematic stimuli to the knee to assess ligament biomechanics in a cadaver model. We asked: (1) Does the application of abduction rotation increase ACL and medial collateral ligament (MCL) strain relative to the normal condition? (2) Does the application of internal tibial rotation impact ACL strain relative to the neutral condition? (3) Does combined abduction and internal tibial rotation increase ligament strain more than either individual contribution? Methods: A six-degree-of-freedom robotic manipulator was used to position 17 cadaveric specimens free from knee pathology outside of low-grade osteoarthritis (age, 47 ± 8 years; 13 males, four females) into orientations that mimic initial contact recorded from in vivo male and female drop vertical jump and sidestep cutting activities. Four-degree rotational perturbations were applied in both directions from the neutral alignment position (creating an 8° range) for each frontal, transverse, and combined planes while ACL and MCL strains were continuously recorded with DVRT strain gauges implanted directly on each ligament. Analysis of variance models with least significant difference post hoc analysis were used to assess differences in ligament strain and joint loading between sex, ligament condition, or motion task and rotation type. Results: For the female drop vertical jump simulation in the intact knee, isolated abduction and combined abduction/internal rotational stimuli produced the greatest change in strain from the neutral position as compared with all other stimuli within the ACL (1.5% ± 1.0%, p ≤ 0.035; 1.8% ± 1.3%, p ≤ 0.005) and MCL (1.8% ± 1.0%, p < 0.001; 1.6% ± 1.3%, p < 0.001) compared with all other applied stimuli. There were no differences in mean peak ACL strain between any rotational stimuli (largest mean difference = 2.0%; 95% confidence interval [CI], -0.9% to 5.0%; p = 0.070). These trends were consistent for all four simulated tasks. Peak ACL strain in the intact knee was larger than peak MCL strain for all applied rotational stimuli in the drop vertical jump simulations (smallest mean difference = 2.1%; 95% CI, -0.4% to 4.5%; p = 0.047). Conclusions: Kinematically constrained cadaveric knee models using peak strain as an outcome variable require greater than 4° rotational perturbations to elicit changes in intraarticular ligaments. Clinical relevance: Because combined rotations and isolated abduction produced greater change in strain relative to the neutral position for the ACL and MCL than any other rotational stimuli in this cadaver study, hypotheses for in vivo investigations aimed toward injury prevention that focuses on the reduction of frontal plane knee motion should be considered. Furthermore, reduced strain in the MCL versus the ACL may help explain why only 30% of ACL ruptures exhibit concomitant MCL injuries.

Abstract:Swept-frequency radiation patterns for several helical antennas indicate that both the lower and upper edges of the passband are marked by the occurrence of a series of anomalies responses which are characterized by very narrow band fluctuations in the swept-frequency gain and axial ratio plots. The upper bandedge gain anomalies coincide with the reflection coefficient and axial ratio variations reported in the literature. The occurrence of both the upper and lower bandedge anomalies is shown to be related to two mode stop regions in the helix dispersion diagram. Several suggested tapering schemes have been tested and it is shown that the lower bandedge anomalies, unlike those which occur at the upper bandedge, cannot be controlled by front-edge tapering. A modification of the feedpoint and backplane cavity which suppresses normal-mode generation is required to affect the lower bandedge anomalies.

Abstract:Background Analyzing sports injuries is essential to mitigate risk for injury, but inherently challenging using in vivo approaches. Computational modeling is a powerful engineering tool used to access biomechanical information on tissue failure that cannot be obtained otherwise using traditional motion capture techniques. Methods We extrapolated high-risk kinematics associated with ACL strain and cartilage load and stress from a previous motion analysis of 14 uninjured participants. Computational simulations were used to induce ACL failure strain and cartilage failure load, stress, and contact pressure in two age- and BMI-matched participants, one of each biological sex, during single-leg cross drop and single-leg drop tasks. The high-risk kinematics were exaggerated in 20% intervals, within their physiological range of motion, to determine if injury occurred in the models. Where injury occurred, we reported the kinematic profiles that led to tissue failure. Findings Our findings revealed ACL strains up to 9.99%, consistent with reported failure values in existing literature. Cartilage failure was observed in all eight analyzed conditions when increasing each high-risk kinematic parameter by 2.61 ± 0.67 times the participants' natural landing values. The kinematics associated with tissue failure included peak hip internal rotation of 22.48 ± 19.04°, peak hip abduction of 22.51 ± 9.09°, and peak lumbar rotation away from the stance limb of 11.56 ± 9.78°. Interpretation Our results support the ability of previously reported high-risk kinematics in the literature to induce injury and add to the literature by reporting extreme motion limits leading to injurious cases. Therefore, training programs able to modify these motions during single-leg landings may reduce the risk of ACL injury and cartilage trauma.

Abstract:Biomechanical risk factors associated with the alignment and position of the knee for anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury are still not conclusive. As bone bruises identified on magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) following acute ACL injury could represent the impact footprint at the time of injury. To improve understanding of the ACL injury mechanism, we aimed to determine the knee kinematics during ACL injury based on the bone bruises. Knee MRI scans of patients who underwent acute noncontact ACL injuries were acquired. Numerical optimization was used to match the bone bruises of the femur and tibia and predict the knee positions during injury. Knee angles were compared between MRI measured position and predicted position. The knee flexion, abduction, and external tibial rotation angles were significantly greater in the predicted position than that in MRI measured position. Relative to MRI measured position, patients had a mean of 34.3 mm of anterior tibial translation, 4.0 mm of lateral tibial translation, and 16.0 mm superior tibial translation in the predicted position. The results suggest that knee valgus and external tibial rotation accompanied by knee flexion are high-risk movement pattern for ACL injury in patients with lateral compartment bone bruising in conjunction with ACL injury.

Abstract:Background The effects of anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) reconstruction on postoperative gait biomechanics remain controversial, and the influence of meniscus pathology on pre- and post-ACL reconstruction biomechanical changes has not yet been studied. Here, we aimed to clarify the difference in knee joint moment between pre- and post-ACL reconstruction conditions in subjects with and without meniscal pathology. Methods Twenty-four subjects with unilateral ACL reconstruction injuries participated in this study. A total of 13 of the subjects had concomitant meniscus injuries. Gait analysis was performed preoperatively and at 11 months postoperatively. Three-dimensional knee joint angles and moments were calculated based on motion-capture data. The total joint moment and contribution of individual moments during the stance phase were assessed. For statistical analysis, we compared pre- and postoperative alterations, and differences were assessed in subjects with and without meniscal pathology. Results Tibial rotation excursion was lower in subjects with meniscal pathology than in those with intact menisci postoperatively. An significant increase in the contribution of the knee flexion moment and a significant decrease in the contribution of the knee adduction moment postoperatively were observed in subjects with intact menisci. Conclusions Patients with ACL injury showed different postoperative alterations in joint moments depending on the concomitant meniscal injury.

Background:Anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury can lead to changes in tibiofemoral kinematics during gait, but the detailed short-term kinematic changes after ACL injury are still unknown.Purpose:To measure tibiofemoral kinematics during gait in ACL-deficient (ACLD) knees over time after ACL injury.Study Design:Controlled laboratory study.Methods:The authors categorized 76 patients with unilateral ACLD knees into 4 groups based on the time from injury: 6 to 12 months (group 3), and >12 months (group 4). The controls were 20 participants with ACL-intact knees. Changes in the knee kinematics and range of motion during gait were compared among ACLD groups and those with ACL-intact knees.Results:Compared with controls, the range of motion of flexion in group 1 was significantly lower (6°; P = .033), and the mean knee flexion was significantly increased (0.7°-3.4°) in groups 1 to 4 (all P ≤ .004). There was more internal tibial rotation (2.9°-4.3°) in group 1 and 2, and more anterior tibial translation (4.3 mm) in group 1 during the stance or swing phases than in controls (P ≤ .049 for all). The mean internal tibial rotation and anterior tibial translation significantly decreased from group 1 to group 4 (P < .001 for both). Compared with controls, the mean medial tibial translation was significantly greater (1.2-2.5 mm) in all groups, and more medial tibial translations (2.4-3.7 mm) were observed during the stance phase in groups 1, 3, and 4 (P ≤ .047 for all).Conclusion:ACLD knees displayed a motion impairment walking strategy within 3 months, and a higher-flexion walking strategy increased with time after injury. Excessive anterior translation and internal rotation of the tibia tended to return to normal, while excessive medial translation of the tibia increased in ACLD knees after 6 months postinjury. These results may provide new insight into the compensatory mechanisms and risk factors for premature osteoarthritis in ACLD knees.

Abstract:A 3-D finite element model, including cartilages, menisci and four main ligaments, was developed to investigate the effect of anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury on the biomechanics of knee joint. The menisci were assumed to be transversely isotropic and ligaments to be hyperelastic. The biomechanics of tibiofemoral joint were analyzed under 134 N posterior femoral force in three cases, corresponding to intact, 1/3 injured and 2/3 injured ACL. It was found that the highest Mises stress in menisci moved from lateral meniscus to medial meniscus with ACL damage aggravating, which corresponded to the clinical symptom that medial meniscus injury often occurs with chronic ACL injury and lateral meniscus injury often with acute ACL injury. It was also found that force of reaction in ACL did not change significantly with ACL damaging, meaning that the more load MCL supporting did not reduce the load damaged ACL enduring, i.e., the load applied on joint with ACL injury could induce the ACL damage aggravating more quickly.
Knee joint function and walking biomechanics in patients in acute phase anterior cruciate ligament tear

Abstract:PurposeThe purpose of the study was to investigate the biomechanics of walking and of the knee joint in the acute phase of ACL injury.MethodsWe examined 18 patients with acute ACL injuries and 20 healthy adults as controls. The biomechanics of the knee joint and of walking was assessed by 5 inertial sensors fixed with special cuffs to the lower back, the lower third of the thigh, and the lower third of the shank of the right and left legs. The movements and temporal characteristics were recorded while the subject was walking 10 m at a comfortable pace. Based on the results of examination, the patients were divided into two groups: with severe function impairment (6 patients) and with moderate function impairment (12 patients).ResultsIt was found that in the first days post-trauma, not only the knee function was reduced, but the function of the entire lower limb as well. This led to a functional asymmetry. The kinematics of movements in the joints changed in accordance with slower walking. The walking became not only slower, but it was also associated with a decreased impact load in the weight acceptance phase. At later dates, the functional impairments were less pronounced. The total range of flexion motion did not exceed 20 degrees in the first group and 55 degrees in the second one. The injured joint developed functional immobilization within the first days post-injury. This was a guarding response by additional muscle strain to prevent unusual and limit physiological movements in the knee joint. The movements in the knee joint while walking were of small amplitude, rocking, and occurred only under load. The amplitude of the main flexion in the swing phase was reduced.ConclusionThe stage of an ACL injury should be assessed not only based on the time post-trauma, but also taking account of the functional parameter—the knee range of flexion while walking. According to our findings, the only factor that had influenced the functional condition of the KJ was the duration of joint immobilization after trauma.

Temporal changes in tibiofemoral relationship following anterior cruciate ligament injury: Implications for rotational dynamics and clinical outcomes

Abstract:Purpose: This study aims to elucidate changes in the tibiofemoral relationship over time following anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury, and investigate the correlation between the tibiofemoral relationship and patient-related outcome measures (PROMs). Methods: Overall, 203 primary ACL reconstructions were performed using autologous hamstring grafts. Medial and lateral anterior tibial translation (ATT) in the sagittal plane and tibial tubercle-trochlear groove (TT-TG) distance in the axial plane were measured using pre-operative magnetic resonance imaging and post-operative computed tomography. The difference between pre-operative and post-operative values for each parameter was calculated: ΔMesdial ATT, ΔLateral ATT and ΔTT-TG distance. The correlation between each calculated value and the time elapsed since ACL injury, and the correlation between each calculated value and PROMs-evaluated using the Knee Injury and Osteoarthritis Outcome Score (KOOS)-were assessed. Results: Sixty-four patients were enroled. Medial ATT, lateral ATT and TT-TG distance were significantly different pre-operatively compared to post-operative values, with the tibia translating anteriorly and rotating internally relative to the femur. ΔMedial ATT, ΔLateral ATT and ΔTT-TG distance were 1.6, 8.8 and -4.8 mm, respectively. A negative correlation was observed between the ΔTT-TG distance and the time elapsed since the injury (r = -0.44, p < 0.01). No correlation was found between ΔMedial ATT and the time elapsed since the injury, nor between ΔLateral ATT and the time elapsed since the injury. Neither the ΔMedial ATT, ΔLateral ATT, nor ΔTT-TG distance correlated with the pre-operative or post-operative KOOS subscale scores. Conclusions: The tibia underwent internal rotation relative to the femur over time following ACL injury, highlighting the importance of assessing rotational changes in ACL-injured knees. Background:The understanding of noncontact anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury causation in soccer has improved over the past decades. Bidimensional video analyses have significantly augmented our awareness, representing to date the only practical method to describe injury biomechanics. However, the extent of the problem continues to raise serious concerns.Purpose:To advance our understanding of the causal pathways leading to ACL injury with a large-scale reconstruction of 3-dimensional (3D) whole-body joint kinematics of injuries that occurred to male elite soccer players, as well as to compare the joint angle time course among situational patterns.Study Design:Descriptive laboratory study.Methods:A total of 33 consecutive noncontact and indirect contact ACL injuries that occurred in 6 national and 2 international professional leagues (seasons 2020-2021 to 2022-2023 until December 2022) were analyzed: (1) multiview noncoaxial television images were inspected; (2) multiple camera views were taken from 400 ms before the initial ground contact to 200 ms after the injury frame; (3) a size-matched pitch was modeled and used to calibrate cameras; (4) a 3D skeletal model was adjusted to fit the player's pose in each frame/view; and (5) poses were interpolated, and Euler joint angles were extracted.Results:The authors reconstructed the 3D lower limb joint kinematic curves preceding and during ACL injuries in 33 cases; notably, a sudden external (up to 5°) and then internal knee rotation was observed after the initial contact and before the injury frame. The overall kinematics at injury were knee moderately flexed (45.9°± 21.7°), abducted (4.3°± 5.1°), and externally rotated (3.0°± 6.4°); trunk shallowly flexed (17.4°± 12.5°) and rotated and tilted toward the injured side; and hip flexed (32.0°± 18.7°), abducted (31.1°± 12.0°), and slightly internally rotated (6.6°± 12.2°). Variable behaviors were observed at the ankle level.Conclusion:Via reconstruction of the sequence of whole-body joint motion leading to injury, we confirmed the accepted gross biomechanics (dynamic valgus trend). This study significantly enriches the current knowledge on multiplanar kinematic features (transverse and coronal plane rotations). Furthermore, it was shown that ACL injuries in male professional soccer players manifest through distinct biomechanical footprints related to the concurrent game situation.Clinical Relevance:Interventions aimed at reducing ACL injuries in soccer should consider that environmental features (ie, situational patterns) affect injury mechanics.

Two Different Knee Rotational Instabilities Occur With Anterior Cruciate Ligament and Anterolateral Ligament Injuries: A Robotic Study on Anterior Cruciate Ligament and Extra-articular Reconstructions in Restoring Rotational Stability

Abstract:Purpose: To determine the effect of 2 extra-articular reconstructions on pivot-shift rotational stability and tibial internal rotation as a basis for clinical recommendations. Methods: A robotic simulator tested 15 cadaver knees. Group 1 (anterior cruciate ligament [ACL] cut) underwent ACL bone-patellar tendon-bone reconstruction followed by sectioning the anterolateral structures and an extra-articular, manual-tension iliotibial band (ITB) tenodesis. Group 2 (ACL intact) tested the rotational stabilizing effect of a low-tension ITB tenodesis before and after sectioning the anterolateral ligament/ITB structures. Lateral and medial tibiofemoral compartment translations and internal-external tibial rotations were measured under Lachman, 5N·m tibial rotation, and 2 pivot-shift simulations using 4-degree-of-freedom loading. Statistical equivalence was defined within 2 mm tibiofemoral compartment translation and 2° tibial rotation at P < .05. Results: The bone-patellar tendon-bone ACL reconstruction (group 1) restored pivot-shift lateral compartment translation within 0.7 mm (95% confidence interval [CI], -0.6 to 1.9; P = .70) of normal. The internal rotation limit was not affected by ACL sectioning or reconstruction. After anterolateral ligament/ITB sectioning there was no change in pivot-shift lateral compartment translation, however internal rotation increased 2.9° (95% CI, 0.6-5.2; P = .99) at 90° flexion. The manual-tension ITB tenodesis (fixated 13-22 N tension) decreased pivot-shift lateral compartment translation 4.8 mm (95% CI, 1.4-8.1; P = .99) and internal rotation by 21.9° (95% CI, 13.2-30.6; P = .99) at 90° flexion. The ACL forces decreased 45.8% in the pivot-shift test. In group 2 knees, with the ACL intact, the anterolateral ligament/ITB sectioning had no effect on pivot-shift translations; however, the internal rotation limit increased by 4.3° (95% CI, 1.9-6.8; P = .99) at 60° flexion. The low-tension ITB tenodesis (fixated 8.9 N tension) had no effect on pivot-shift translations and corrected internal tibial rotation with a mild overconstraint of 4.2° (95% CI, 1.9-6.8; P = .99) at 60° flexion. Conclusions: A low-tension ITB tenodesis, fixated at neutral tibial rotation to avoid constraining internal tibial rotation, has no effect in limiting abnormal pivot-shift subluxations. Clinical relevance: A low-tension ITB tenodesis has limited clinical utilization as the pivot-shift subluxations are not affected, assuming appropriate tensioning to not overconstrain internal tibial rotation.
Bioleaching of Zn , Ni and Fe from contaminated sediments of water reservoir Ružín I with using heterotrophic bacterial strains

Abstract:This study investigates the bioleaching of the zinc polluted sediment from water reservoir Ružín I using heterotrophic bacterial strains ubiquitous in sediment environment. The effect of bacterial activity, pH, iron solubilization and precipitation and bioleaching medium were evaluated. The pH value controls the bacterial activity during the leaching process. Addition of glucose to the bioleaching medium accelerated the bioleaching rate. The results indicates, that the leachibility of zinc depend on the geochemical forms and surface interaction between metal and sediment fraction. Sequential chemical extraction confirm, that Zn was predominantly bound to the iron-manganese oxides.
Novel mechanical impact simulator designed to generate clinically relevant anterior cruciate ligament ruptures

Abstract:Background: Over 250,000 anterior cruciate ligament ruptures occur each year; therefore, it is important to understand the underlying mechanisms of these injuries. The objective of the current investigation was to develop and analyze an impact test device that consistently produces anterior cruciate ligament failure in a clinically relevant manner. Method: A mechanical impact simulator was developed to simulate the ground reaction force impulse generated from landing in a physiologic and clinically relevant manner. External knee abduction moment, anterior shear, and internal tibial rotation loads were applied to the specimen via pneumatic actuators. The magnitudes of applied loads were determined in vivo from a cohort of healthy athletes. Loads were systematically increased until specimen failure was induced. Three cadaveric lower extremity specimens were tested and clinically assessed for failure. Knee specimens were physically and arthroscopically examined at baseline and at post-injury by a board certified orthopedic surgeon. Findings: All three specimens experienced failure at either the midsubstance or the femoral insertion site. The mean peak strain prior to failure was 18.8 (6.2)%, while the mean peak medial collateral ligament strain was 7.9 (5.9)%. Interpretation: A board certified orthopedic surgeon confirmed observed rupture patterns were representative of clinical cases. Peak strains were consistent with literature. The novel mechanical impact simulator will allow researchers to assess clinically relevant patterns of rupture and the data generated will inform clinician decisions. This novel machine presents the ability to assess healthy specimens as well as differences in the function of deficient and reconstructed knees.

Abstract:Based on the magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) data, a 3-dimentional finite element model of knee joint was developed using the reverse modeling technology. The model includes bone, all the four main ligaments, menisci and cartilages with consideration of the transversely isotropic constitutive behavior of menisci and hyperelasticity of ligaments. The biomechanics of tibiofemoral joint under an anterior tibial force and a compression load with anterior force was analyzed at three cases: intact anterior cruciate ligament (ACL), partially injured ACL and totally ruptured ACL. Our main goal was to quantitative analyze the effect of ACL injury on the biomechanics of other knee tissues.
